buildings. Above all, much needed affordable housing will be provided allowing local people to be able to have a home of their own. This in turn will help reduce our housing waiting list and assist in meeting the shortfall in housing across the Borough.”

This first phase of the Stoneham development will consist of 560 homes that are made up of a mix of one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes. Around 342 of the homes will be for social rent and shared ownership and 218 will be for sale on the open market. Avenue Park, a large central area of public open space will also be provided and a new internal link road through the estate between Stoneham Lane and Chestnut Avenue providing access from both roads.

much earlier than would have happened without our intervention.

The new homes are a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes and will be available for private rent, providing the Council with an ongoing rental income.

Overall the whole development will provide 1,100 new homes, together with a new local centre, including a new primary school, children’s pre-school nursery, community building, residential care home, retail and office buildings and car parking.

The Council has played a key role and, by working closely with the developer, has speeded up the delivery of the scheme that will provide much needed new homes for market and social rent. The homes and the new school and road improvements will now be provided

Chair of Eastleigh Local Area Committee, Cllr Steve Sollitt, said: “This exciting development of a new community will see enhanced facilities for all Eastleigh residents with great improvements to parts of the historic park and restoration of heritage

There will also be two children’s play areas, green pathway links through the development, together with a number of smaller areas of open space. There will also be pedestrian and cycle links across the site, some of which will follow the routes of historic carriage drives.

Key to the first phase of the development are 146 new homes that are being purchased by the Council and will be managed by VIVID (formerly First Wessex) social housing provider.

Staying Steady & Strong in Eastleigh Older adults are being helped to keep active in exercise classes designed to prevent falls. The Council’s HealthWorks team run regular Steady & Strong sessions, which are aimed at people who are unsteady on their feet or who may have had a fall. HealthWorks staff are qualified Level 4 Postural Stability Instructors and take participants through a variety of exercises

to help improve and maintain balance, flexibility and muscle strength. The classes also provide the opportunity for people to meet and have fun. Four Steady & Strong classes take place throughout the week in community centres across the borough.

Classes cost £3.50 and last for an hour, followed by tea and coffee, and an all-important biscuit to refuel for the day ahead. For more information, or to join a class, contact HealthWorks on 023 8068 4813 or email healthworks@eastleigh.gov.uk

The Arts & Youth Trust for Eastleigh Young people with an interest in arts and crafts, music or drama could get a helping hand from the Arts & Youth Trust for Eastleigh. Each year the Trust makes small grants to help young people with the cost of tuition fees for dance classes, learning to play an instrument or travelling to events such as theatre workshops or

scout and guide jamborees. Grants are also available to help with the cost of essential equipment, such as dance shoes or instruments. If you are interested, aged between 10 and 26 and

resident in the Borough, send a stamped addressed envelope (sae) to Martin Kyrle, Secretary to the Trustees, 16 Park Road, Chandler’s Ford, Eastleigh SO53 2EU (no sae, no reply). The closing date for receipt of completed applications is midday on Monday 31 July.

Youth & Community Trust wins Lottery support Eastleigh Youth & Community Trust, based at Pavilion on the Park, has received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project about the charity’s history. It will focus on the stories of the people who have dedicated their lives to the trust and the

community it serves, from 1962 to the present day.

Eastleigh Youth & Community Trust is an organisation that works with people from all parts of the community to provide inclusive, educational and recreational activities for residents. The award will provide an opportunity for volunteers at the charity to carry out archival research and hold oral history workshops, working with local residents, ex-trustees and their descendants. The project will culminate in a month-long event where local people can visit an exhibition at Pavilion on the Park.

Waste and recycling

Recycling plastics - it’s got to be a bottle Do you know which plastic items you can place in your green recycling bin? Simply remember that if it’s plastic and bottle-shaped it can go in, but currently we are not able to accept any other sort of plastic. So, everyday plastic bottles including soft drinks, milk, detergent, shampoo and cleaning product bottles can all go in the green recycling bin but please remember to remove the bottle tops if you can!

Why can’t I recycle certain plastics such as pots, tubs or trays?

Kerbside recycling collected in Hampshire is taken to one of two material recovery facilities (MRFs) where it is sorted into different streams of recyclables. These MRFs sort plastic bottles from other materials.

Plastic pots, tubs and trays (PTT) are made up of a different type of plastic that cannot be sorted in the MRFs.

Bottles with PET or HDPE on the bottom make up around 97 percent of plastic bottles.

Visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk/ plastics to see our short video about plastic bottle recycling.

Join 17,000 households and subscribe to our garden waste collection scheme Thousands of local people are saving time and money by joining our popular garden waste scheme - and so could you! Around 17,000 households have already signed up to one of the fastest growing wheeled bin services in the county; benefitting from the convenience of having their garden waste collected every fortnight from their kerbside. Whether you have a small amount of garden waste, or lots of grass cuttings, shrub prunings and weeds filling your bin, we can collect your garden waste to save you time and make it easier for you to recycle. The cost of a bin is only £36 for the year, frozen until 2019. That’s £3 a month or just under 70 pence per week - cheaper and much more convenient than taking garden waste to

the tip yourself. And there is the added bonus of avoiding any mess or creepy crawlies in your vehicle! Cabinet Lead for Environment, Cllr Rupert Kyrle, said: “It’s a really popular scheme with residents as it saves you time, avoids queuing at the local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and mess in your vehicle.” So why not sign up and have your garden waste collected from your home? To find out how you can join Eastleigh’s ‘green revolution’ and be a part of our garden waste service visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk/ gardenwaste or call 023 8068 8440

New Local Response Team

7

Your Council will soon be even more visible in your local area as we launch a new team to deal with issues that matter to you. The new Local Response Team ensures that we have Council staff out in the community with new technology meaning that work can be routed to handheld devices in real time so that issues can be dealt with quickly and efficiently. The team will deal with a number of issues, including targeting areas that are affected by fly-tipping or fly-posting, noise nuisances,

animal welfare concerns, neighbour disputes or parking enforcement issues. If you have something to report, this can be done by using our ‘Report It’ function on My Eastleigh via our website, by calling Customer Services on 023 8068 8000, or visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk Using a new mobile device to monitor progress on a current housing development

New system will save time for Council visitors Residents who need Housing Benefits, Council Tax Support, Council Tax or Business Rate advice will no longer have to wait for a specialist officer to become available as we launch a new appointment based system. From July, customers who need specific help or advice will no longer need to ‘drop-in’ and use the current ticket queuing system. The new appointment system will help us manage visitor numbers more efficiently and effectively, save customers’

time and help improve the service. The Revenue & Benefits team see around 1,500 people per month and this can sometimes mean waiting in reception before an officer is available. By introducing this appointment system,

we can ensure that the wait time for customers is reduced and allocate service experts to customers for a private meeting. The launch of the appointment system coincides with the move to Universal Credit and will help ensure that customers get the help they need in the quickest amount of time. Appointments can be booked by calling 023 8068 8046

Universal Credit is a new type of benefit designed to support people who are on a low income or out of work. The new system is based on a single monthly payment to the claimant and will replace six existing benefits: Job Seekers Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit from all working age claimants. The Borough-wide roll-out from 12 July will include anyone who is currently on one of the six existing benefits mentioned and who has a change of circumstance that would automatically trigger a new claim to Universal Credit, meaning the entire household would move to the full service. One of the biggest changes for residents is that the Council will no longer be allowed to take new claims for Housing Benefit from people of working age (a few exceptions apply). Where help with rent is required it will be included as part of Universal Credit and processed by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP).

The Council has signed a pledge to improve attitudes towards mental health and tackle discrimination. Chief Executive, Nick Tustian, was joined by Elizabeth White Ripley and Dan Angus of Solent Mind, together with Helen Coleman, the Council’s Healthy Communities Section Manager, to sign the Time to Change Employer’s Pledge during Mental Health Awareness week.

Latest News from Barton Peveril Sixth Form College Japanese students experience Club Taishikan Modern language students immersed themselves in Japanese culture when they spent the afternoon at the Embassy in London to take part in ‘Club Taishikan’.

Club Taishikan takes its name from the Japanese word for embassy and run a series of weekly workshops on everything from origami and calligraphy to traditional dress and dancing. Starting the afternoon with lunch at a local Japanese restaurant, students continued on to the embassy where they enjoyed presentations about Japan and their culture. They then got the chance to really experience it first hand by improving their character writing skills in a Japanese Calligraphy session. They were also able to find out about Japan’s love of “Yosakoi” by learning a dance using wooden clappers (naruko)

Engineering education scheme with Ericsson and Leonardo Three student teams from Barton Peveril took part in the national Engineering Education Scheme which enabled them to work with defence giant Leonardo and technology company Ericsson. The scheme sees engineering companies team up with sixth form students to complete a real life six month engineering project working on scientific, engineering and technological problems. The project provides students with an in-depth experience in science, engineering and technology that will enable

them to make an informed decision about their future studies and career. Throughout the half year programme, students were able to gain hands-on work experience, take part in problem solving and teamwork activities, learn professional skills and develop technical ability - all key elements which will support them in the working world. This year, the college were privileged to have one team work with Ericsson Television and two teams with Leonardo. Alongside the programme elements, the participants also had the opportunity to

bookshop, and encountered a demonstration outside the Japanese Embassy protesting about the killing of dolphins in certain Japanese cultures.

Ms Dipika Soni, the organiser of the day and workshops, and a member of JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) spoke to students about the opportunities available to them after graduating from university. Many students came away inspired to apply to the graduate programme, which is an official Japanese Government scheme aiming to improve foreign language teaching in schools and to promote international understanding.

Asuko Sekine, subject leader for Japanese at the college said:

The students rounded off the day with a visit to a Japanese supermarket and

“It’s important that the students learn as much about the different aspects of the culture in Japan alongside learning the language. Encountering the protest has highlighted the different sides to Japan, for them to be aware and think about - not only the popular, fashionable and ‘cute’ aspect of the culture, but the very real and hard hitting side as well. The students had a great day, and have learnt so much that can inform their studies.”

compete for a British Association CREST Award - and the Barton Peveril projects allowed the teams to qualify for Gold CREST Awards and become Gold Industrial Cadets. They were also able to network with professional and graduate engineers, scientists and technologists and take part in a wide range of workshops. The final event was held in April where all of the Hampshire teams came together to give technical presentations to leading engineers and exhibit their projects. The Ericsson team won a “Contribution to Business” award and will represent the region at the national finals in London later this year. Their winning project was about Smart Home Security and involved writing facial recognition software and web interfaces to interact with home doors and windows.

New leisure centre takes a green approach

9

Switch and Save with Eastleigh?

Eastleigh’s new leisure centre will promote the health and wellbeing of local residents when it opens towards the end of the year – and it will also play its part in protecting the environment.

The replacement for Fleming Park Leisure Centre will feature a range of environmentallyfriendly elements, aimed at minimising its carbon footprint. The new centre will be powered by a combination of solar power and energy from a newly constructed combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The Council is working towards achieving a BREEAM “excellent” rating for a sustainable buildings that minimises environmental impact and has high levels of energy efficiency. The orientation of the new building minimises unwanted heat from the sun, whilst maximising natural daylight, and features natural ventilation where practical. The building’s

footprint is similar to the current centre and there will be no loss of green space from the surrounding parkland when it opens. CHP is a highly efficient, lowcarbon process that captures and recycles heat that is a byproduct of electricity generation. It will provide energy for the new leisure centre – as well as providing heat to the site of the former civic offices that is due to be redeveloped from this summer (see page 16). The 288 photovoltaic solar panels that were installed on the current building in 2011 have been transferred to the roof of the new leisure centre last month. They generate around 62,000 kWh per year – sufficient to power around 18 homes for a year.

The Council also took advantage of the Government’s 25-year feed-in tariff scheme, allowing the authority to sell any surplus energy generated back to the grid. The £185,000 installation cost has been almost fully recouped in six years, and an income of around £25,000 a year should be generated over the next 17 years. Borough Council Leader, Councillor Keith House, said: “Creating an environmentally sustainable building was a key aim when we were planning the new leisure centre, reflecting our ambition to be a green borough. The new centre will deliver enormous benefits for people across the Eastleigh region, but we were determined to do this with as minimal an environmental impact as possible.”

Are you one of the millions of households in the UK that have not switched their energy supplier in the last ten years? Or your current deal has expired and you are sitting on the supplier’s standard tariff. Many of you could be paying around £150 more than the cheapest deals available. There are hundreds of different energy tariffs making it hard to ensure you are always on the right one. Eastleigh Borough Council is encouraging residents to switch and take advantage of lower energy bills, we have joined forces with independent energy switching service EnergyLinx to provide a simple way to switch. We have set up a dedicated website and telephone line that is updated with all the new products as they come to market. After entering a few details it searches through all the current tariffs available, listing them for you in an easy to understand way.

Switching supplier does not mean any changes to the electricity or gas currently delivered to your home, it just means you will be paying less for what you use. Before you switch, check if you will incur a charge for cancelling your current contract and have your latest bills at hand so the switching service can quote you realistic prices. The fee we receive from every switch via this service will be reinvested by the Council into energy efficiency and fuel poverty initiatives for our community. Visit switch.eastleigh.gov.uk to get started or phone 023 8068 8815.

As befits a famous railway town, and to mark 50 years since the last steam train stopped running on the Southern Network, passing through Eastleigh, a celebration of the age of steam is being planned around the town centre. We are looking for specialist memorabilia or vintage themed stalls to fill the Market Place alongside the Wadebridge steam locomotive that will be making a one-off, nostalgic visit to the town centre. The Ageas Bowl

RESIDENTS’ NEWSLETTER Welcome to the Ageas Bowl’s special edition newsletter, which outlines the exciting year ahead at the International venue on your doorstep.

Hilton at the Ageas Bowl recently celebrated its second anniversary with its Sir Ian Botham inspired restaurant, BEEFY’S, reopening as a British tapas bar and brasserie restaurant in March after an extensive refurbishment to complement the country’s first eforea spa which already calls the luxury hotel its home.

The coming months promise mouth-watering entertainment and unprecedented variety at the Ageas Bowl with two concerts accompanying England’s three Internationals, not forgetting a vast array of domestic action. Two exciting clashes with South Africa – a Royal London ODI meeting last month and a NatWest IT20 on Wednesday 21st June – are followed by a potentially series-deciding ODI against the West Indies in September.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the Ageas Bowl and as a gesture we have included several offers for you, our neighbours.

July sees the official opening of the Ageas Bowl’s new 18-hole golf course, Boundary Lakes, and live performances from Bryan Adams and Little Mix.

Please read on to find out more!

Boundary Lakes Golf Course – Coming Soon!

BEEFY’S – Same Name, Different Game

The Ageas Bowl’s new 18-hole golf course, Boundary Lakes, is opening this July!

Newly redesigned and refurbished, the Ageas Bowl’s restaurant, BEEFY’S, reopened as a British tapas bar and brasserie restaurant in March.

Complete with USGA standard greens, the par-69 parkland course will provide a stern test for both high and low handicappers alike, and is sure to offer a few surprises upon a player’s first round. Off-course facilities including Boundary Lakes’ brand new clubhouse will all be housed within Hilton at the Ageas Bowl. Boundary Lakes’ Membership is fully subscribed ahead of its July opening, although you can still secure your place on a waiting list, whilst taking advantage of a range of corporate days and society packages as well as a broad pay and play offering. If you’d like to find out more about Boundary Lakes ahead of its opening next month, please visit www.boundary-lakes.com.

BEEFY’S, a concept created by Sir Ian Botham, was extensively renovated and the restaurant’s brand new menus offer tasty British tapas from a refreshed bar area and diverse à la carte dining in a contemporary new restaurant space. Its highly popular Sunday Lunch offering is just one of many indulgent BEEFY’S events, including three ‘occasions’: Monday Night Wine Club, Claret & Cleaver Thursday (Steak Night) and Friday Night Fizz. Hampshire and England bowler Reece Topley said: “It’s great to see the new BEEFY’S looking so good – the refreshed surroundings of the restaurant are fantastic.” For more information on BEEFY’S or to experience it for yourself, please visit www.beefysrestaurants.com.

WOODWORK & NATURAL ART

If your children enjoy the outdoors, then the holiday activity days, at Itchen Valley Country Park, could be for you. Over the past two decades activities have become more adventurebased, allowing children to learn about risk, practice new skills and grow into more confident and resilient individuals. Team members at the Itchen Valley Country Park-based facility say there is a real sense of freedom and excitement watching the children playing carefree in the

woods - and trying out new skills like using tools and fire-lighting. This summer there will be a theme for each day of the week to help parents to choose activities that their children particularly enjoy:

SURVIVAL 1 DAY will include den building, camouflage games and lighting Kelly kettles.

SURVIVAL 2 DAY will include building a hammock, making a bow-and-arrow and cooking lunch (pizza wraps and fruit kebabs) over the campfire.

Eastleigh Building bridges in Eastleigh Two new bridges have opened as part of work to transform the former Fleming Park golf course into attractive and accessible parkland for all. The old municipal golf course site at Fleming Park in Eastleigh is undergoing a £460,000 transformation that is bringing a range of improvements to the popular green space.

A key aim is increasing access for a range of users throughout the year: the new timber bridges are designed to be pedestrian and cycle-friendly and form part of the route of the parkland’s recently opened all-weather trail. The circular route attracts a wide range of users, including Cycles 4 All (a charity that promotes cycling for people with disabilities), joggers, dog-walkers, wheelchair and mobility scooter users and people with buggies and prams.

The parkland landscape is also being enhanced by planting native trees. This will make the area better for wildlife and create a more natural look. The project is overseen by the Eastleigh Local Area Committee (LAC) and funded from developers’ contributions.

Land off Passfield Avenue - protection measures Work is now complete on earthworks to prevent future unauthorised vehicle access to Council-owned land off Passfield Avenue.

The LAC identified money for works to create earth bunds that have proved an effective protection measure elsewhere against unauthorised Traveller encampments. The works – which had to fit with planned highway improvements and a new footpath and cycle path include a number of new trees parallel to Passfield Avenue, along with bollards around existing trees and replacement trees alongside Passfield Avenue.

Grantham Green making great progress The transformation of Grantham Green, a popular open space near the centre of Eastleigh, is making great progress – and a community open event is planned for Sunday 23 July. Local residents were consulted on improvements that include re-landscaping to create a more interesting, undulating landscape with a rock climbing feature. Other new elements include a multi-use games area to replace the existing single

goal and basketball hoop, new pathways and seating and picnic tables. The earthworks are now virtually complete, as is the planting of trees, shrub beds and wildflower turf laying, although the extended period of drought means some of the grass won’t be established for the opening event. The picnic tables, benches and climbing rock are currently at the design stage.

Chandler’s Ford & Hiltingbury Clean and tidy Residents and commuters have noticed reductions in the amount of litter between the Chandler’s Ford railway station and Valley Park, near Monmouth Close. The improvement has been clear since a new bin was installed by a seat which is popular with local workers who use it to eat their lunches. The Local Area Committee (LAC) funded the bin after receiving calls about levels of rubbish. The bin is ‘dual use’ which means it can also be used to dispose of dog waste.

Local priority projects LAC Councillors approved an update to its list of priority schemes at their recent meeting. The list, which was drawn up in partnership with the Parish Council, includes large and small projects which range from installation of play and fitness

equipment to a proposed long-term, major restoration plan for Hiltingbury Lakes. Funding will need to be found for each scheme.

Residents who have any queries regarding these restrictions should contact the Parish Clerk: d.murray@chandlersford-pc. gov.uk

Tree planting ceremony Members of the Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury Local Area Committee have purchased and planted a tree as their own tribute to the many years of service given to the people of the Borough of Eastleigh by former Mayor, Godfrey Olson OBE, who among his many other roles was a former Chairman of the Committee. The choice of a traditional English Oak tree was seen by Councillors as being very fitting for this well-respected local public figure. The current Committee Chair, Councillor Pamela HoldenBrown welcomed the Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Maureen Sollitt, and invited her to plant the tree at a location close to

Hedge End, West End & Botley Strawberry heritage captured in artwork Following the death of an old oak at Shafford Meadows in

Hedge End, the stump has been carved into a unique design that reflects Hedge End’s history. The Local Area Committee (LAC) provided the funding to commission Richard Austin, a local wood carver and designer. The completed carving has been very favourably received by local residents. In its Victorian heyday, 20,000 tonnes of strawberries a day were sent from Botley and Swanwick stations to the fruit market at Covent Garden and on to London’s swankiest restaurants and hotels. When an old tree dies we encourage leaving stumps and deadwood where they are, if safe to do so, as they can provide superb habitat for wildlife.

Hedge End Station The Borough Council has been working in partnership with South West Trains to improve the waiting shelters at Hedge End station. The project was jointly funded with South West Trains and the LAC and provides far more covered waiting space than previously available for the station’s growing numbers of customers. The committee has also funded improvements to the pathway behind Cheltenham Gardens and the train station.

Boorley Park Several new houses at Boorley Park are now occupied and the Borough Council has been working closely with Botley Parish Council and the developers to ensure that

community facilities meet the needs of local people. Designs for the sports pavilion and community centre are progressing, along with plans for the allotments and early ideas for public art. More details will appear in future editions of Borough News.

Youth grants Around £4,000 has been awarded to local youth groups. The Hedge End Youth Council reviewed grant applications and made recommendations to the LAC. The Mayor presented the cheques to the successful groups at the Hedge End, West End and Botley Youth Partnership’s annual general meeting. There’s more good news with local Councillors agreeing to allocate £4,000 for youth grants in 2018.

Dropped kerbs Residents asked for dropped kerbs in Hilton Road and Prestwood Road, Hedge End to help them get to local facilities. These two projects have now been completed and were paid for by the LAC.

LATEST NEWS FROM EASTLEIGH COLLEGE AIR CONDITIONING STUDENT WINS ACR APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR! Congratulations to Dan Lapworth, apprentice Air Conditioning Engineer at Cooltherm, who has been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at the ACR News Awards 2017. Commenting on the award, Dan said, “It feels good to have won, I really wasn’t expecting it. I had various different jobs after school, so to come back and do well at college, and be recognised for it, is good. It’s going to be an interesting thing to put on my CV and hopefully give me an edge in future employment.”

In addition to winning ACR News Apprentice of the Year, Dan was on the list of nominees for the ACR Trainee of the Year award last year, so his CV is going to look very impressive! His story proves that it’s never too late to start a successful career. To find out more about Dan, and the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration courses offered at Eastleigh College, please visit www.eastleigh.ac.uk or call 023 8091 1299.

Dan, 28, joined Eastleigh College to study Refrigeration and Air Conditioning back in 2014, after spending the last few years in various different trades. He believes that his breadth of previous experience has been beneficial, as he is more confident in working with pipes and electrics. Dan’s advice to other apprentice Air Conditioning Engineers is: “As soon as you’ve got a job you can use for your portfolio, get all the information together and jot it down. If you save it up, you might have five jobs to do at once and it’s not fresh in your mind. Doing it bit by bit makes it more manageable.”

During a glittering awards ceremony, held at Lainston House Hotel in Winchester, Level 3 Food & Beverage Supervision student Carmen Darmanin was announced as the Institute of Hospitality’s Front of House Student of the Year, beating of stiff competition within her category. When receiving the award, Carmen commented, “I was so shocked, overwhelmed and happy! My lecturer was screaming, and everyone was just hugging me! Housing and development

Artist’s impression of Hendy car dealership from Leigh Road

Work on a new Hendy car dealership is set to start this summer following approval from the Eastleigh Local Area Comittee. The work will be the first phase of the re-development of the old civic offices site on Leigh Road. The amended planning permission is for a revised design for a new Hendy car showroom comprising three showroom buildings that will be for Mazda, Kia and Honda, car display courtyard on the site frontage and separate sales tent. Chair of Eastleigh Local Area Committee, Cllr Steve Sollitt said: “This is a really exciting development that brings more

Progress on the delivery of our Local Plan

business investment into our borough. The new Hendy car showroom will provide additional jobs and opportunities for local people.” He added: “We have retained ownership of the site as part of the Council’s property portfolio that provides a significant rental income.” The Council will expect to receive detailed applications for the remaining elements of the site in the future. Details of the application can be viewed on the Council’s Planning Portal on www.eastleigh.gov.uk/planningbuilding. The application number is F/16/78623.

Woodside Avenue development

We are currently preparing the new Local Plan for the period until 2036, which will set out how many new homes and how much employment, shopping and other development the Borough needs. The Local Plan also identifies the new infrastructure that is needed alongside this such as new roads, schools, and doctors surgeries; important countryside gaps between towns and villages; and specific areas which need added protection, such as conservation areas or areas of ecology. We are currently working with a number of external agencies who are carrying out investigations and studies into key issues including transport, sustainability and nature conservation. We will continue this work to shape the content of the Local Plan. In December 2016, the Council re-affirmed its commitment to

undertake further work on the Council’s preferred options. Significant work has been undertaken since then, and the meeting on 20 July gives the Council the opportunity to consider progress that has been made on the preferred options for its Local Plan. Communities will have their chance to comment on future proposals as part of a full consultation process before the plan is submitted to government. For more details visit www. eastleigh.gov.uk/localplan To receive updates on the progress of the Local Plan email localplan@eastleigh. gov.uk

Work is well under way on a new housing development on Woodside Avenue, Eastleigh that will provide 94 new homes on this approach to the town centre. All of the 94 new homes will be for rent with 36 social rented and the balance to be available for market rent. The new homes will be ready for occupation later this year. This exciting scheme is the result of a partnership between

the Council and social housing provider, VIVID (formerly First Wessex) as part of Aspect Building Communities Ltd a company that enables the Council to actively enter the housing market and facilitate development of sites, thereby

supporting the delivery of housing across the Borough. Eastleigh Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have been working together to free up land for this much needed housing development, including moving the Woodside Household Waste Recycling Centre to Chestnut Avenue.

The Point and The Berry Theatre

The Berry Theatre transforms schoolchildren’s stories into an app Local schoolchildren have seen their stories transformed into a mobile app, thanks to a ground-breaking creative writing project run by The Berry Theatre. The Hedge End-based theatre’s Story Shuffle partnered ten primary and junior schools in Eastleigh and Southampton with their local libraries, and tasked pupils to complete a series of writing challenges that were then used to write an original story.

a special code will be required at each library - allowing the children to read their own individual creations and introducing them to an even wider range of books.

Pupils then worked with TinRaven, a developer based at Eastleigh’s Tec Hub, on a specially-created mobile app into which their stories were fed.

Working with the theatre’s Drama Development Team, the schools used the story of Southampton’s legendary hero Sir Bevis as the basis for the challenges, devised by the theatre’s associate writer Matt Beames.

These imaginative tales can now be ‘unlocked’ by visiting the school’s partnering library –

As part of the project, pupils also worked towards gaining the Discover Arts Award

qualification by learning more about the drama team’s day-today roles. The project was supported by a £50,000 investment from Southampton-based charity Artswork, along with further funding from Eastleigh Borough Council and Arts Council England. Story Shuffle forms part of The Berry Theatre’s Write Now programme aimed at developing new writers. For more information on Write Now, visit www. theberrytheatre.co.uk/ write-now.

Pavilions development delivers apprenticeships

Ben Leahy on work experience

Barratt Homes are delivering an employment and skills plan for The Pavilions housing development (on the former site of Moorgreen Hospital).

apprenticeship through their 2017 future talent apprentice programme.

Under what is known as a Section 106 agreement with the Borough Council, that delivers community benefits around a development, Barratt have taken on apprentices to develop their skills on this multi-housing project: two are local Eastleigh residents:

Councillor Derek Pretty, Cabinet Member for Business and Skills, said: “These employment and skills agreements between the Council and developers have a real impact on the local community, providing construction skills training for apprentices, work placements for school age students and jobs for local residents.”

Max Honeyman has received support from BDW Southampton and Heidi

Greenman CiTB in passing his apprenticeship. Currently, he is working with A Lees brickwork at The Pavilions. Ben Leahy is on a fulltime course in construction management at Eastleigh College. He has completed three sets of work experience at The Pavilions to date and has been able to successfully apply for a Barratt Homes

Arokah – a real game-changer, developed in Eastleigh Arokah is a one-of-a-kind, multi-teaser puzzle experience based on a new mathematical discovery.

Borough welcomes European Aerial Dance Festival Internationally acclaimed aerial dance company Gravity & Levity, in partnership with The Point, Eastleigh, once again welcomes the annual European Aerial Dance Festival (EADF) to Eastleigh from 8-19 August. EADF offers an extensive range of classes by a host of world class tutors and will bring a number of national and international aerial enthusiasts to the borough.

This new board and digital game was developed in Eastleigh by Chandler’s Ford resident Steven C Brazier, a former maths teacher. Steven has been working with local game developer startup, Finblade, who are based in Eastleigh’s town centre Tec Hub at Wessex House. Described as a unique set of elements formed within the structure of a hexagon, that combine to create the most beautiful and extraordinary

patterns and designs, Arokah contains at its heart a previously unknown, naturally occurring phenomenon. Why the Arokah shapes create these remarkable patterns remains a mystery that is currently being explored by mathematicians at the University of Cambridge. More information on Arokah is available at www.arokah.com or have a go at the Board Game Café held at The Point. (See page 18)

Gravity & Levity specifically chose Eastleigh as their location for the eighth annual EADF due to The Point housing some of the best aerial facilities in the country, both in the main auditorium and in the on-site, double-height Creation Space. Eastleigh’s excellent transport links also makes it the perfect location for the festival with the proximity of Southampton Airport encouraging European travellers. Gravity & Levity & EADF Director, Lyndsey Butcher said: “We’re really excited that the festival will once again be hosted and supported by The Point in Eastleigh. It’s a perfect venue for us; wonderfully friendly and fully accessible throughout, enabling us to hold almost all our activities under one roof.

Last year participants fully embraced being in Eastleigh Town Centre, visiting local hotels and businesses throughout their week. This year we will continue to promote all the local haunts to our participants so they take advantage of what the Borough has to offer during their two week stay.”

Classes throughout the two weeks include trapeze, aerial yoga, counterweight harness, Cyr Wheel, vertical dance, acrobatics, corde lisse, massage and flexibility training. This year’s festival programme will also include performance opportunities, creative classes and coaching. For more information on the festival please visit www. thepointeastleigh.co.uk or call the Box Office on 023 8065 2333.
