ongratulations, you’re engaged! And there’s no more time to delay. It’s time to get planning. Sometimes the sheer volume of what goes into a wedding is daunting, but the key to success is to take the process one manageable step at a time. The first step is to establish the tone of your day. What do you think your wedding will be like? Traditional or quirky? A huge showcase of an event or a small family affair? These questions are important, as they will ultimately define what kind of venue, ceremony, décor and food you need to opt for. Browse pages of magazines and search the web for inspiration. Pinterest is a fabulous tool for wedding planning. Take a look at our pin-spiration at uk.pinterest.com/eastlifemag/ Picking a venue is an important starting point. you dream of or perhaps something more low key and rustic? Maybe a big house in the country or waterside hotel is for you. The good news is that East Anglia is home to all of these things and more. Saturdays are the most popular day to get married for obvious reasons, and as a result it is recommended you book at least 18 months in advance to avoid disappointment. Planning a wedding needn’t be as stressful as you might think. Most venues will have an in-house planner to assist you and help plan your big day to budget. When it comes to choosing your venue the first thing to decide is location, location, location. Once set on an area, the fun can really begin. To help with your plans East Weddings put together its top picks for wedding venues around the region:

TOP TIPS FOR PICKING A VENUE

A

fter the initial yes, a brides mind can often begin to run wild with wedding planning but before you start picking your dress and colour scheme, finding the perfect venue is a must. With so much choice it can sometimes be a daunting task but stick to careful planning and sensible decision making and you’ll soon be saying your ‘I dos’ in the location of your dreams. Location, location, location When deciding which venues to view it’s important to think about the overall theme of your wedding. Do you want an elegant and formal affair or a relaxed garden party? Some venues can help reflect your style perfectly without the need of over the top décor. Location is vital. Make a decision on the area you would like to get married and then search for venues within that region. Viewing your venue Go as a couple to your first viewing. Not only will it build excitement but it’s a good opportunity for you to both choose a venue that suits your relationship and personalities. Ask lots of questions. No matter how small or silly of a matter it might seem, if it’s important to you then ask – the wedding co-ordinator will be happy to help, we promise! Guests Make a rough estimate of the number of guests attending your wedding, both day and night. Ensure the venue will be able to accommodate. Take into thought accessibility for guests to get to and from your wedding venue – the last thing you want is stranded guests at the end of the day. Speak to the wedding planner about overnight accommodation available.

Food The wedding breakfast is a big part of your day. Choose a venue that is able to cater for your tastes and preferences. Many venues now offer a range of cuisine from sit down three course meals to buffet. There are even BBQ options with hog roast, which is perfect for a summer wedding. Money matters Perhaps one of the most important aspects of choosing a venue is money. Agree a budget beforehand and stick to it. It’s easy to get swept away in the moment but you don’t want to blow your entire budget on the venue and not have enough for the dress of your dreams. If you find a venue you love but can’t quite afford it, speak with the wedding co-ordinator to see if you can arrange a special package. Buffet and BBQ options are sometimes cheaper than a full sit down meal.

THE WEDDING WISHLIST

E

ast Anglian based, wedding planning extraordinaire, Katrina Otter, gives us the low down on this year’s hottest wedding trends... Over the past couple of years we have been fortunate to see some very dominate wedding trends emerge – mismatched bridesmaid dresses, floral crowns, naked cakes and the wedding hashtag to name a few. However, this year has been an exception, which makes the task of predicting wedding trends for 2015/16 rather more difficult. In addition to looking at emerging trends from international wedding blogs, I’ve also decided to look further afield at dominant and emerging trends in fashion, design, architecture and interiors. After all, these trends are often clear indicators of what is likely to come in the world of weddings. Today, I’m sharing my top trend predictions for 2015/16 in the hope that they provide you with plenty of inspiration for your big day. ORGANIC & WILD GARDEN FLOWERS Throughout 2014 the ‘just-picked-from-thegarden’ look for floral arrangements and bridal bouquets was an increasingly popular trend. The great news is that it’s here to stay. Using freshly picked, organic and

20| DOWNLOAD OUR FREE APP TODAY!

unstructured flowers will remain a huge trend, as will incorporating seasonal elements such as herbs, foliage and even fruits. FAUX FLOWERS Floral garlands are one way to add the real wow factor to your wedding. They can be used to create everything from statement tablescapes and ceremony backdrops to detailed defined cake tables and bars. If you’ve fallen in love with floral garlands but don’t necessarily have the budget or are marrying out of season then let me introduce you to Friend of Faux. www.friendoffaux.com With blooms such as lilacs, roses, peonies and wild hedgerow touches for half the price of the real deal it’s easy to understand the industry buzz surrounding faux. BRIGHT AND BOLD Moving on to colour and one hot trend predication is bright and bold. If you’re not afraid to take a risk and make a style statement then an edgy colour palette of hot neon pinks and warm oranges, underlined with crisp whites will certainly make your big day stand out for all the right reasons.

TRENDS & DECOR COPPER & CONCRETE Copper and concrete are currently two of the most talked about interior trends. When it comes to this trend crossing over to the wedding industry this is where creativity and your imagination steps in. If you are fortunate enough to have the perfect industrially chic wedding venue with vast amounts of exposed concrete surfaces and copper pipes then you’ve pretty much incorporated this trend already. If you’re looking for a subtler way to add these earthy elements to your wedding then how about using copper and concrete as a base colour palette or on a design front think DIY candles, copper cutlery and copper foil invitations.

Image: The Sweet Hostess

WATERCOLOUR Watercolour has grabbed the attention of the wedding industry and inspired a whole host of creative DIY blog posts on how to emulate this trend. From watercolour invitations to softwashed cakes and dipped napkins, there’s no denying that there are plenty of creative ways to incorporate this trend into your wedding day. LIGHTING Of all the décor options, a well thought out and imaginative lighting design is the ultimate way to set the tone for your wedding. With couples allocating more of their budget to this design element expect to see increasingly creative and special lighting designs this year including festoon lighting, Edison bulbs, gobos, video mapping, chandeliers, neon, light boxes and an abundance of candles.

Image: Dottie Photography

LINENS Since the beginning of last year the number of companies in the UK that now offer fashion forward, embellished and textural linens has continued to grow. With an increasingly wider selection of linens now available (including pretty petals, black and white stripes, rosettes and sequins) expect to see couples becoming more creative with their tablescape designs. If you’re looking for inspiration in East Anglia then Gilded Linens (www.gildedlinens.com) have a fine event linen portfolio and will also shortly be re-locating to Suffolk. www.katrinaotterweddings.co.uk

WEDDING DRESSES

PICK THE PERFECT GOWN

Save yourself from dress stress with our guide to choosing the right style for you

I

n all the excitement of planning your wedding over the next few months, one of the most important things will be finding the perfect dress. This season the bridal runways have been full of swoon-worthy gowns. Tulle overskirts and off-the-shoulder necklines have all made a comeback. Though an on-trend dress may seem like the perfect choice for you it’s important to choose a style that suits your shape and figure. Before the ultimate shopping trip begins have an idea about which style you prefer. Though this may change when you start trying on dresses it will help to eliminate options. Becoming familiar with styles and design terminology will be a huge help. Here are some guidelines to help you get started… Empire Empire gowns have a raised waistline that starts right under the bust, flowing to a skirt that skims over the hips then flairs slightly to the floor. The style is suitable to most figures. Silhouette The A-line or princess dress has no marked waist and the vertical seams flow from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating an A shape. It is a popular choice among brides. If you carry your weight in the middle, this silhouette is a good choice. Full gown If you’re dreaming of a fairytale wedding then a full gown will make your day complete. Romantic and elegant, full gowns generally have a fitted bodice and very full skirt. You’ll find full sleeves, sweetheart cuts, high necks and more options available. A full gown is ideal if you want to hide hips and thighs.

WEDDING DRESSES

Mermaid A sexy style that shows off your curves, the mermaid is great if you are body confident. The dress is tight down the body and begins to flow out at the knees. The body restriction can make it a little tricky to walk in so make sure you get plenty of practice before the big day. Sheath For a figure-flattering fit get a sheath dress. The dress is designed to fit close to the body and typically falls around the knees or lower thighs. The tight body fit doesn’t allow for body flaws but it can elongate the body, making a great choice for petite brides. The Duchess of Cambridge is a big fan of this style too! Top Trends New colour alert Dazzle your way down the aisle this wedding season in a dress that breaks the white tradition. The bridal catwalks have been alive with colour. From gentle ocean tones great for beach weddings to striking metallics by Jenny Packman, it’s time to rock a coloured frock! Tulle and texture Designers have added a dramatic edge to wedding gowns with layers of romantic tulle and ruffled textures added to skirts. The tulle design has been added to a number of necklines and can look fabulous on most shapes and sizes. Capes No, not quite superman but just as spectacular. Whether a bride wants to cover up or create some added drama as she walks down the aisle, a cape, long or short, can be a great accessory to your dress. It can also work as an alternative to a veil. Off-the-shoulder Strapless wedding dresses have been given an overhaul with a brand new off-the-shoulder twist. Dropped and slouchy shoulders that sit mid-upper arm are the must-have look.

BRIDAL BEAUTY

Beautiful Bridal Skin

Y

ou may have everything planned to the last detail but what about your skin? Have you prepared it for its big moment in the spotlight? In the lead up to your wedding day it is a given that at some point you’re going to be stressed but all that stress can play havoc on your complexion. The last thing any bride wants on her big day is a break out of spots or tired dull skin. To help ensure you look picture perfect when you say “I Do”, Helen Ambrosen, co-founder and product inventor at Lush gave her expect advice and beauty tips for the big day. “I think the best thing to do is to look at yourself totally, mind and body, because occasions like this can be very stressful,” said Helen. “It’s really good to be aware of how your mind is working because stress shows in your face. I would suggest lots of relaxation, exercise and even meditation, you really can’t start this regime soon enough. It’s good to get into good habits, sleep well, drink plenty of water and maintain a healthy diet.” Helen advises to start thinking about your skin between four to six months before your wed-

ding so your skin can get used to any new treatment or products you may start using. It can also take time to put a new beauty regime in place so a skin consultation is highly recommended. “Cleansing is key, if you cleanse, tone, moisturise and get it right, this will help keep your skin looking and feeling healthy,” added Helen. “If you have difficult skin you must not neglect it, if you do problems will occur. It’s really important to establish a good skin care routine and maintain it. “Hugely important is not to overdo it. Don’t hate your skin, as sometimes this can make things worse as you will use stronger products. It’s better to avoid exfoliating over pimples. Make sure you tend to and look after every area of your face. When cleaning your face everyday, we can sometimes forget certain areas such as under the jaw line, in-between your eyebrows and the bridge of your nose.” Put a simple skin routine in place and you’ll soon have beautiful plump skin with even tones for your moment in the spotlight. eastlife.co.uk | 29

them around your wedding. They look great hanging from trees and will work as a colourful backdrop to photographs. It also works as a nice touch to table plans and guest books.

Romantic Luxury Think big, think grand, think beautiful! Following in the footsteps of Kim Kardashian’s extravagant wedding to Kayne last year, blooms are adding some height this season. Use tall glass vases or droop elegant arrangements over the alter. Stems should be kept hidden and soft flowers such as hydrangea, hyacinths and orchids in creamy pastel colours need to be used. This is only a style for brides with a big flower budget!

Crowns Floral crowns are the must-have wedding accessory this year. In 2014 they were mainly reserved for bridesmaids and only the bravest of brides but this year expect to see them as a gorgeously romantic alternative to the veil. Generally featuring white flowers and greenery, they are perfect if you’re having a country or festival inspired wedding.

Wild garden The just picked from the garden look was a popular choice in 2014 and it doesn’t look like it will be going anywhere for the next year or so. Mix together floras that look like they have come from the garden; soft blossoms and greenery. This is a great option for small budgets and it smells great too. Simplicity Delicate soft white flowers such as roses, hydrangeas and gypsophila are great for simplistic weddings. They make a beautiful contrast against rustic wood décor and are ideal for a variety of wedding themes including country, fairytale and beach. with some bright shoes to match! Or perhaps you’d prefer to choose colourful centre pieces to liven up table décor. Vibrant colours such as blue, red, yellow and purple are great choices. Pretty pastels Pastels come into fashion every spring and generally follow through to summer. However, this year pastels are taking an even softer approach. Petals will be of soft and creamy tones, honoring an English garden. Pastels are a great way to combine floral and bridesmaid colours. Quirky alternatives For all the bohemian brides out there looking for something a little different, it is the year to be experimental. We’ve put together some ideas for a bouquet that’s one of a kind… Wheat The perfect alternative to flowers for a bohemian summer wedding, wheat offers a natural look and won’t wilt in the heat. Paper Paper is an ideal solution for a DIY wedding. You’ll find lots of inspiration and tips on wedding blogs and Pinterest. It’s relatively easy to create and you can go all out with the addition of paper chains as décor. Fabric Using a variety of fabrics can give a bouquet a softer and natural feel. You can use cuttings of items that are important to you, easily theme it to your day and even use for your grooms pocket square. A VINTAGE VISION

T

he vintage trend is going nowhere for 2016, we spoke to Halyey Thurston, owner of Dolly’s Vintage Tea Party, who specialise in creating vintage weddings throughout East Anglia, as to why brides can’t get enough of this trend… Over the past few years, the word ‘vintage’ has been widely popularised in the worlds of fashion, music and interiors. It is now too, a continuously growing trend for weddings, where couples are balancing a beautiful vision with a more modest budget. Whether it is vintage accessories and styling, a vintage-inspired wedding dress, or the colours, theme, materials or flowers, thought-provoking venue styling and ‘pause points’ will serve to frame and enhance a wedding venue. This kind of styling will also create a sense of nostalgia and a truly beautiful backdrop for photographs which create timeless images of you and your guests. If you are planning a vintage wedding, using mismatched items is the key to creating vintage décor. Go with a relaxed and romantic feel using ‘just-picked summer field’ floral arrangements, with coordinated, pretty bunting, colourful pompoms and sympa-

thetic drapes. Enchanting vintage crockery and antique lace linens work well, balanced with hessian fabric, wood and more natural, rustic materials. Instead of having traditional and uniform centre pieces, create arrangements that differ from table to table, to bring texture and beauty. For example birdcages, antique books, lanterns and ideally candle light, will all add to a whimsical effect. Really think about the overall look and feel of the décor, it should compliment your theme or era so research is essential. All types of venues can work with the vintage theme. Be it a country manor, where timeless, opulent elegance may compliment the look of your day or a traditional barn, which is crying out for an enchanting, earthy and rustic feel. My personal favourite though, will always be a marquee in your own garden - what a great excuse for a quintessentially English country fete backdrop. What ever venue you choose, and whether it be a quintessential vintage tea party catering or traditional ‘meat and veg’ meal, the more mismatched and eclectic your accessories and china, the more memorable the overall effect will be. I always encourage both bride and groom to get involved in the planning and styling,

VINTAGE WEDDINGS

so all elements of their vintage wedding day will be unique to them. With this in mind, try to use the places you go, hobbies you have or the things you love as opportunities for ideas. Inspiration can also come from social media; Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook provide ideas from other people, countries and suppliers. If you are looking to buy items for the big day, local antique markets and auctions can be amazing treasure troves of vintage wonders. Be open-minded and look to see if items can be adapted or renovated into a wedding accessory. Charity shops and car boot sales are great too, but, check your granny’s attic first - you never know what you may be able to use! Couples are also making more use of their guest books and cake tables. They have now become a more visual part of the vintage décor and are often complimented by a beautiful array of flowers. Another extremely popular trend at the moment is photo booths. Dolly’s vintage photo booth (www.dollysvintageteaparty.co.uk) can be hired with or without our 1966 Sprite caravan. With it we supply vintage hats, frames and props galore such as vintage cameras, phones and typewriters, and an ‘outside’ scene created with screens, crates, cases, bunting, parlour chairs and more. If you are doing your own, stay

away from the tackiness of sombreros and plastic glasses. Some of the images in this article were created in collaboration with the inspirational photographer Liz Greenhalgh (www. lizgreenhalgh.co.uk) and the enchanting floral arrangements were by Louise Sanderson at Wild Frost (www.wildfrost.co.uk). Whist working with them I wanted to get their take on the trend of vintage weddings. Liz explains: “When photographing a vintage-style wedding I can get creative and have fun with the bride and groom in a relaxed and unobtrusive way. My style is a departure from the usual formal wedding portraits, with everyone standing in a line looking at the camera. It’s more relaxed and intimate and captures the moment more artistically. I love the nostalgia of those personal touches that can only be created by a vintage themed wedding.” Louise says: “For me, vintage, it is the photos of my great aunt and granny’s wedding bouquets, be it replicating the style of the bouquet or picking a favourite flower from it. I have bound a bride’s posy with a piece of lace found in their grandma’s sewing box and some clients have expressed the wish to use flowers that their grandad grew in his garden. What a lovely, truly meaningful way to bring a vintage style to your wedding flowers.” eastlife.co.uk | 33

A JOURNEY TO LOVE

J

enna Cook, 28, and Aaron Brown, 27, a couple from Canvey Island, Essex, tied the knot at Hylands House, Chelmsford, in April 2015, following a two and half year courtship that has not been all plain sailing. The couple has a remarkably strong bond, are extensive travellers and met on the daily commute to work. “That was in June 2012, although we didn’t start dating until the October,” said Jenna. “After some weeks of getting the train together he finally said hello to me as the train pulled up in London. Since then, we have spoken every day.” “From our first date onwards, we knew we had something very special.” For very strong reasons, Jenna had cancelled four dates before going ahead. “We had built up a very good friendship before having a relationship and still to this day, we think this is why it works incredibly well. “When Aaron entered my life, he was taking on a big challenge,” continues Jenna. “My Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, which had become terminal. I am an

only child and so life was extremely sad and difficult. To let someone into your life at that stage meant they had to be an exceptional person.” In their first year together, Aaron planned lots of holidays including travelling to Mexico to help Jenna deal with the constant worry of cancer, hospitals and of taking care of someone you love greatly. A further challenge was ahead though, as Jenna found a lump in her breast and had to undergo surgery to remove lymph nodes. “I am not sure where I would be now if Aaron hadn’t come into my life,” she adds. A World Adventure at Hylands Hylands is already a special place for Jenna and Aaron. Jenna does a lot of charity work and did the ‘Race for Life’ on behalf of Cancer UK in the estates park. Hylands was also used as the romantic setting for when Aaron asked Jenna’s parents for their blessing in regard to the marriage. “The staff at Hylands House are very helpful and have answered all my questions along the way,” said Jenna. “The booking process

REAL LIFE WEDDING VENUES was easy. On the day, the wedding was perfect from start to finish. Hylands was unreal, the venue, the staff – everything was just exceptional.” With 120 day guests and an additional 150 people in the evening, the couple used the magnificent red and gold Banqueting Room in Hylands House for the wedding reception drinks and the new Grand Pavilion for the wedding breakfast. Jenna took advantage of the serene Bridal Suite for her and her bridal party to get ready in on the day. She chose a beautiful off the shoulder gown complimented by gorgeous accessories from Confetti & Lace, in Thurrock, Essex. The Banqueting Room is lavishly decorated with 24 carat gold leaf swag and scroll decorations, silk lined walls and hand painted wall motifs and completing the luxurious look is a French marble fireplace. There are floor-to-ceiling windows to let the light stream in and give a stunning view of the back lawn, parkland and Serpentine Lake beyond. The Grand Pavilion has sparkling chandeliers and ivory drapes, a stunning bar, PA sound system and atmospheric mood lighting. The couple’s guests enjoyed private views of the courtyard garden with steps leading to romantic walks in the Pleasure Gardens and landscaped parkland beyond. “Our wedding was a very typical traditional family orientated one,” said Jenna. “But with our own little stamp on it.” Every table was named after the places in the world, which Aaron and Jenna have travelled to.

planned and personalised by Jenna herself, who has a very sweet tooth!

Jenna and Aaron’s wedding day is even more poignant than most. Aaron proposed Charlotte, Aaron’s sister was the bridesmaid in Venice in October 2014. “My engagement dressed in pastel pink. Aaron’s brother David ring is engraved with ‘Always and Forever’ the best man and there was a pageboy and with a pink diamond on the inside of the four ushers. They wore navy suits and pastel band for my Mum, as she won’t always be pink socks. “We chose pastel pink to reflect with me in person but my ring will be,” said back to Breast Cancer Care,” said Jenna. Jenna. Aaron designed the ring himself. The bridesmaid dresses were purchased from The wedding ceremony took place at All Debenhams while the men visited Antony’s Saints Church, Springfield. “Both sets of Formal Wear in Billericay, Essex for their attire. parents got married in Church, so it felt right,” adds Jenna. The food consisted of the families’ favourites to include prawn cocktail, soup, sausage The couple will continue their travels, with the and mash, fish and chips, profiteroles and next stop being Lanzarote, a familiar place cheesecake. There was a sweet cart too, to Jenna. eastlife.co.uk | 35

5 ways to save cash on your big day From homemade invitations and a high street wedding dress to having your best friend do your hair and make-up, there are lots of ways you can save a few pounds without scrimping on the look and feel of the day

W

ith the average couple splashing out around £21,000 on their wedding day, it’s no wonder hundreds of brides are looking at ways to slash costs to make their big day more affordable. The money saving team at PromotionalCodes.org.uk has put together its top tips for saving money on your wedding day. Get wed out of season 1. Tying the knot out of the traditional wedding season can save you a fortune, as can getting married on any day other than Saturday. So a Friday wedding in November and you could be quids in. 2. Wedding Fairs Find out which wedding fairs run close to you and check them out. There will be lots of discounts on offer, especially if you make a decision there and then. Do your homework beforehand and head straight for the stands you’re interested in. Homemade invitations 3. Wedding invitations can cost as much or as little as you want ranging from around 25p per invite up to £7.50 for a handmade version. However, make them yourself and not only will your guests receive a beautiful card made by your fair hands, it’ll also cost you a lot less for something truly special. The dress 4. For any bride, finding ‘the’ dress is their number one priority. But remember, the perfect dress doesn’t have to be the most expensive. Take a look at what the high street has to offer – there are some great designs out there. Don’t forget the designer sample sales too where you can save thousands on couture gowns. Catering 5. If you’re opting for a DIY reception, then get family and friends involved in the catering. You don’t need to have a fancy sit down meal. Why not have a BBQ, a vintage afternoon tea or even a cosy family picnic? eastlife.co.uk | 37

HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RING

G

ood things come in small packages. Despite this well-known fact, weddings themselves are all too often big in every sense of the word. But don’t lose sight of what’s important during the often hugely overwhelming planning process. To dismiss a wedding or engagement ring as ‘just a piece of jewellery’ is to do the entire tradition a disservice. These material items serve as a symbol for the life you plan on building together and the love you’re pledging to one another forever. Ephemeral they are not. You will be wearing this ring for as long as you are married – hopefully for the rest of your life. We all know that the big bling comes at the beginning of the wedding process – with the engagement ring. There’s no need for any aspiring grooms to feel constrained by tradition, gemstone or even budget when it comes to proposing. The traditional brilliant cut diamond solitaire in a typical gold setting is the obvious, conservative choice – deservedly popular because of its universal appeal. Princess, Emerald and Oval cuts are all small variations on this conventional theme.

38| DOWNLOAD OUR FREE APP TODAY!

Not all brides, however, are conventional. The popularity of coloured stones is gaining momentum and shows no sign of abating. Not only do gems such as Emeralds, Sapphires (in various shades, such as peach or pink - or even white) and Garnets make beautiful pieces of jewellery but they are rare choices too. They stand out and can be personalised to each bride. Why not opt for a stone in her favourite colour or her birthstone? Consider different metal settings as well – rose gold is feminine and has a ‘contemporary vintage’ feel, whilst yellow gold pairs beautifully with yellow diamonds. Mixing metals is another way to bring quirkiness to a ring setting. The engagement ring will to some extent define the style of the wedding ring – no one wants there to be a mismatch. Simple, slender bands in a matching precious metal are elegant and discrete, and do not steal focus from the engagement ring if it is the main event. But if the engagement ring itself is subtle, or even non-existent, then the wedding ring is another chance to experiment and choose a really lovely piece of jewellery.

JEWELLERY

THE FINAL CUT Brilliant – this round cut is the most popular of all gemstone styles. Princess – this square shaped cut is second only to the round brilliant in its popularity. Emerald – this versatile cut lends itself to both vintage and contemporary aesthetics. With long lines, it tends to be less fiery than a ‘round brilliant’ cut, but boasts broader, more dramatic flashes of light. Cushion – despite not being as brilliant as newer cuts, its romantic and classic look sets it apart from other styles. Pear – with vintage appeal, it tends to lend size to smaller carat weights, as well as providing an elegant look and plenty of sparkle. Oval - the beautiful oval cut accentuates long, slender fingers and reflects light dazzlingly. Marquise – the cut tends to maximise carat weight as well as flatter fingers, making them appear more slender.

There are plenty of different styles of wedding band to choose from for women, with jewellery designers experimenting with a variety of styles and embellishments. Carved embellishments have a subtle elegance and a vintage feel and stunning pave diamonds provide gorgeous sparkle. Really elaborate designs have actual cut out patterns set with gems. But sparkle and embellishment isn’t just for the girls. Men may not be accustomed to wearing jewellery but that could soon change once they catch a glimpse of the different styles on offer to them. The first step is to choose the perfect precious metal – it doesn’t have to be gold. Choose something that looks good against your skin tone or a favourite metal. It doesn’t have to be white, yellow or rose gold. Try black titanium for a super masculine look and a cheaper alternative to platinum.

Trillion – the cut’s brilliance and fire is also ideally suited to an entirely unique solitaire.

Depending on the groom’s personal sparkle threshold, there are plenty of bejewelled mens rings available varying from a subtle strip of off-centre diamonds to a bold row flanked by other gems such as sapphire. For interest and design flair without diamonds, mixing textures is the way to go – matte metal finishes next to their shiny counterparts are striking. Subtle patterned embellishments in the form of blocks, squares or ridges are elaborate but nevertheless masculine.

Radiant – this hybrid cut is hugely popular as it combines the depth and brilliance of the round, emerald and princess cuts.

Enjoy the wedding ring buying process for what it is – a shining oasis of indulgence in the midst of wedding planning mayhem. Choose something that works for you and stay open minded – your perfect ring may be the last thing you’d expect.

Asscher – a fantastic vintage appeal.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

A

ll aspects of your wedding are important, but after the confetti settles it’s the photos of your big day that you’ll look at for years to come. The arrival of your wedding photography is an exciting moment. Like most brides after the hype you’ll be on a wedding comedown trying to find things to do to fill the time that was once full of wedding magazines, table plans and invite replies. It’s a great chance to relive the day with friends and family, which is why it’s an area not to be overlooked. While you can hunt around and find mega bargains on wedding stationary and bunting, photography is not an element you should be scrimping on advises Nick Ridley (www.nickridleyphotography.co.uk), an Essex based photographer, who has been snapping weddings since 2009. “Like with everything in life, you get what you pay for,” he says. “If you hire a budget wedding photographer, expect budget photos.” Don’t panic just yet if you’re budget won’t allow for a skilled photographer, Nick 42| DOWNLOAD OUR FREE APP TODAY!

explains how you can still get amazing pictures without the hefty price tag: “If it were me booking on a real shoestring budget, I think I’d look around for up and coming or aspiring young photographers who are trying to get somewhere in the photography world and want to build a portfolio. “If not, I’d look to book my favourite photographer for a small section of my wedding, maybe just the ceremony or the reception drinks to see if they would price it like a portrait session. Another option to consider is digital only packages since albums are quite expensive to make. There’s been a big uptake on digital only, I think it’s a shame as we all know what happens to digital photos, they don’t see the light of day. If you do go digital, make sure you pick a handful of good images and invest in some decent framing!” Most good photographers will advise booking around 12 to 18 months in advance. It’s likely that sought after photographers will be snapped up so avoid leaving it around the six month mark.

PHOTOGRAPHY

To make choosing your photographer a little easier research is key. “The most important thing is to have a good look at photographers in your area and find one with a style you like. Good photographers have a real consistency in their style and you should pick the one that best represents how you see your day being portrayed,” explains Nick. “The best advice I can give is to find a photographer who does pre-wedding or engagement shoots as part of their package. It will not only give you some lovely pictures of you as a couple but also get you used to your photographer and how to be directed without the added pressure of it being on your big day.” Over recent years wedding photography has become much more creative. The obvious shift comes from film to digital but the likes of social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram have inspired creative poses and a trend for vintage looks, muted tones and imaginative lighting. This year has seen photography take flight with the use of a flying drone. Available online from companies such as Camera Jungle (www.camerajungle.co.uk), a drone

is a fantastic way of capturing one-of-a-kind content. However, the law on flying drones is quite strict and commissioned professional photographers will need a drone pilot’s licence. If you don’t want to run the risk that comes with a drone, there’s still plenty of ways of capturing the perfect moment. Nick adds: “Forget about the photos and the photographer and have a perfect day! I spend 80% of the day watching people interact, look, smile, laugh and cry. An experienced photographer knows where these moments are likely to happen and it’s their job to make sure it’s recorded. “If you’ve picked the right photographer they will have researched your venue and will take you to the best places for great images and backdrops. When I shoot a wedding I ask the couple to make sure they have around 45 minutes clear around reception drinks for us to go for a walk and capture some images of them alone. I think this time is vital, it’s a part of the day when the couple have a glass of fizz in their hand and a smile on their face and you can take them away from the bustle and the confetti to enjoy their moment.” eastlife.co.uk | 43
