Dear Reader, April is one of my favourite times of year. The warmer weather means we can finally say goodbye to scarves and gloves and start exploring the region without the cold spoiling the fun. This issue we have lots of fantastic things to do. From Easter events, theatre breaks and the region’s top golf courses, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Personally I’m still deciding whether to make the most of the long weekend on the Norfolk Broads or Suffolk Coast. For more inspiration this Easter visit www.eastlife.co.uk Elsewhere we shine the spotlight on Suffolk, choose our favourite Cambridge restaurants and have an exclusive peek into this year’s Fling Festival. We also took to the road to test drive the Mercedes-Benz SLK, check out the review on page 62. To be the first to hear the latest news, events and interviews from around the region, download the Eastlife App for free from Apple and Android stores. Happy Easter Everyone!

et up close and personal with some of Britain’s most iconic aircraft in an historic setting, see them being restored, sit in the passenger cabins and even in a fighter cockpit at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum, Hertfordshire.

These include gems such as the Tiger Moth biplane trainer, Chipmunk trainer, “wooden wonder” Mosquito fighter bomber of the Second World War, the world’s first jet airliner, the Comet, a wartime Horsa glider, the aircraft carrier-based Sea Vixen, and many more. Visitors will be able to talk to the expert restoration teams as they work on different parts of the various aircraft and engines. Examples of jet engines designed by de Havilland are on display in the Halford Collection, featuring the Goblin, Ghost, Gyron and Gyron Junior. On 27 June visitors will be able to meet Capt Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, retired Royal navy pilot and test pilot, who has flown more types of aircraft and made more landings on aircraft carriers than any other pilot in the world. He will be among a number of veteran pilots at the museum for a special Signing Day. The museum’s location at Salisbury Hall, London Colney, is just off the M25 J22, putting it in easy reach of south-east England. AROUND THE REGION BRITAIN CAN BE HOME TO WORLD CLASS CYCLING CITIES, SAYS BOARDMAN

Aldeburgh listed in UK’s top 50 best towns to live

T

he investment and ambition that Cambridge is putting into cycling will create a world leading cycling city in Britain for the first time, British Cycling’s policy adviser Chris Boardman said at a conference in the city last month. Speaking at the national 20’s Plenty conference, British Cycling’s policy adviser, Chris Boardman will said: “Cambridge already has record cycling participation levels with 20% of trips made by bike – 10 times higher than the national average. Not content with this, the council has plans to increase this to a massive 40% by 2023. This is a level that would be ahead of world cycling cities such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen. If Cambridge reaches this level there will only be a handful of world cities with a greater share of cycle journeys.” Cambridge is investing over £10 million over the next two years with £6 million coming from the government’s cycle city ambition grant fund and over £4 million from local contributions. With a population of around 124,000, this equates to almost £40 a head every year being spent on cycling. On his visit to Cambridge, Boardman took the time to meet local MP Julian Huppert – a Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group – to hear about the work the city is doing to further improve cycling. Currently 29% of Cambridge residents cycle to work and also almost 50% cycle at least once a week. Nationally only 2% of people regularly travel by bike. During his visit to Cambridge, Chris Boardman will also see new measures that the council has taken to grow cycling even further, including new segregated cycle lanes along Huntingdon Road, new reduced 20 mph speed limits, safer cycle junctions and cycle filtered roads.

A

ldeburgh on Suffolk’s Heritage Coast has been listed in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live in Britain top 50 towns. Highlighting why they selected it, The Sunday Times said, “The pastel-hued town attracts some of the biggest names on the classical scene. There are also several good restaurants and an acclaimed fish-and-chip shop. It’s so not the end-of-the-pier show.” Aldeburgh has been a favourite holiday venue with discerning visitors since Victorian times. With its big skies, wide beaches and charming cottages, the town has also been a magnet for musicians, artists and writers. Add to this a good choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants plus a cinema, independent shops and a relatively dry climate, and Aldeburgh is the ideal place to live. Peter Osborne, General Manger of both the Brudenell and White Lion Hotels in Aldeburgh agrees that it’s a beautiful place to both live and work. He said: “Much of my time is spent walking up and down the seafront between the two hotels. I’m really lucky because it’s a delightful place to walk; I can see the fishing boats on the beach and discover what the morning’s fresh catch has brought. In the early morning I can watch see the sun over the glistening sea and the wide skyline constantly changing. “There’s also a thriving arts and cultural scene in the town and a great community spirit helping me to indulge in my passion for music and the summer concerts by the sea I organise, which are about music through the decades”.

Chris Boardman added: “Cambridge is leading the way in lowering the speed limit to 20mph on the majority of resident and shopping streets. This will save lives and make communities more pleasant places to live for us all.” www.britishcycling.org.uk/getinvolved eastlife.co.uk | 15

THEATRE BREAKS ADD A LITTLE CULTURE TO YOUR WEEKEND AWAY

A

theatre break doesn’t necessarily mean trekking into London, here in the East of England we’re lucky to have some of the best theatres around. Whether you’re into jaw-dropping drama, belly laughs or family fun, this spring brings a host of top shows to enjoy.

Accommodation within walking distance of the Theatre Royal includes The Dog and Partridge (www.gkflamegrill.co.uk), The Chantry Hotel (www.chantryhotel.com), and The Angel Hotel (www.theangel.co.uk). For more things to do and ideas in Bury St Edmunds, turn to page 141.

A one-night break is great for pre-dinner and a show, while a two-night stay allows more time to shop and explore the area. Whichever you choose, we’ve rounded up some great ideas for a weekend getaway.

In April the Theatre Royal welcomes Tara Arts with its version of Macbeth, bringing Indian movement and live music to Shakespeare’s classic text on 14-18 April.

BURY ST EDMUNDS, SUFFOLK

CAMBRIDGE

The Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds is the country’s last working Regency Theatre. Built in 1819 its intimate auditorium is perfect for all kinds of shows from magical children’s theatre to who dunnits and, of course, the annual pantomime. The Theatre Royal enjoys welcoming visitors, locals and those from further afield and runs guided tours and self explore options during the year. Guides will bring the building’s history to life and those wanting to soak up the atmosphere on their own are welcome to do so. It’s always best to check if guides are available before booking your hotel as they are subject to change to the theatre’s performance programme. This year the theatre is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the building being re-opened as a working theatre after being used for decades as a barrel store by local brewers, Greene King. Celebrations will include an exhibition and a new play, thanks to funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The theatre will also create a living archive of people’s memories during the time of the re-opening so future generations can re-live the story.

NORWICH, NORFOLK The early spring at Norwich Theatre Royal brings a host of great shows. Back for April, 14 to 18, is Northern Ballet’s stunning version of the Scott Fitzgerald book The Great Gatsby. The stunning story of decadent party goers in 1920s Long Island is bursting with style, passion and drama and features incredible performances and some beautiful costumes inspired by Chanel. The month ends with two members of the Fox acting dynasty – James and Jack –playing the real-life father-and-son Roger and Charlie Mortimer in Dear Lupin. Running from 27 April to 2 May and based on the book of the same name, it follows the close family relationship over 25 years between the cheeky Charlie who finds himself in various scrapes and his long-suffering dad. There are all sorts of great places to stay for a theatre break. Just a short walk away is The Georgian Townhouse (www.thegeorgiantownhousenorwich. com) with its stylish and comfortable rooms mixing mid-century furniture, a contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities, as well as its funky Georgian restaurant with its seasonal menus. If you prefer a more rural Norfolk base for your stay, then why not try the Norfolk Mead Hotel in Coltishall (www.norfolkmead.co.uk) which is around 20 minutes drive from the city. The country-house hotel enjoys an enviable reputation with customers from

all over the UK and beyond who savour its individually appointed rooms, beautiful grounds including a stunning lake, and top quality customer service. If a few nights away is not possible, there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat in or close to the theatre. Norwich Theatre Royal has its own in-house restaurant Kemps, which offers a wide range of options all prepared and cooked at the theatre by its team of chefs. Next door is the historic Assembly House where the team’s reputation for fine food and warm, friendly and professional service means their pre-theatre menu proves popular. The newlyrefurbished Coach and Horses on Little Bethel Street (which is one of the city’s oldest pubs) is also just a four minute walk away and boasts a simple menu crafted with the best local produce. COLCHESTER, ESSEX As Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester offers plenty to see and do. From heritage and history at the Castle to family fun at the zoo, it’s easy to spend a whole weekend here. This season the town’s most popular theatre the Mercury Theatre is hosting a jam-packed schedule of performances. Following five years in the West End, Avenue Q will be at the theatre from 22 to 25 April. The hugely entertaining show is an irresistibly charming musical which tells the story of the loveable characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues. Hilarious, cheeky and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, Avenue Q is a musical like no other. May’s highlight include Noises Off from 1 to 16 May. Written by Michael Frayn, Noises Off lifts the curtain on the ups and downs on-stage and behind-the-scenes as bungled romances collide with wayward sardines, forgotten lines and just a few precious egos. It’s access all areas on 9 May at 11am as you can join a friendly tour of the backstage areas of the Mercury Theatre. You can step on the stage and get up close to the set of Noises Off, as the guide tells you about the history and operation of the theatre. You will hear about theatre superstitions, the design process and more. Tours cost £6 and must be booked in advance. Head into town for pre-dinner and drinks or dine at the theatre’s restaurant. The 500-year-old George Hotel located on the High Street is ideal for an overnight stay. Tel: 01206 573948 www.mercurytheatre.co.uk

Fun at the Fling

THE FLING FESTIVAL RETURNS SATURDAY 4 JULY

T

here’s something about Chelmsford that makes it the perfect place to host a festival. Since the 1980s Hylands Park has been the epicentre of some of the biggest festivals around but unlike most big bashes promoting huge headline names, there’s a festival that prefers to keep a low profile - of course, it’s none other than The Fling Festival. Now in its 7th year, The Fling Festival has been kept relatively off the radar and is one of the only festivals around that prides its self on exclusivity. Here you’ll find no reality TV camera crews, z-list hangers on or pretence, just honest members of the public embracing their creativity and having fun. Though you might still spot the odd famous face keeping a low profile and mingling with us mere mortals. Starting in its first year with just 600 attendees and presenting itself as a “glorified garden party”, the festival has grown somewhat and now has a capacity for 5,000 visitors, a mix of amazing live acts and this year has introduced camping facilities. Liam Rich, the Fling Festival event manager said: “It’s very exciting to be able to introduce two tiers of camping. Demand has out striped supply and there is definitely a view for expansion in the future.” As well as bringing your own tent, there’s also the opportunity to stay in luxury bell tents provided by local company Bella Rose. Camping will be intimate and exclusive with selected numbers and post-festival shenanigans including an after-hours VIP bar and The Fling’s famous silent disco, which will go on well into the early hours of the morning.

If you don’t feel like raving you can join in outside games like table tennis and giant Connect 4 and in the morning enjoy the Breakfast Club and a Sunday morning stretch with a little yoga – completely optional of course! It’s The Fling’s enchanting spirit that keeps guests returning year after year. Liam explains: “There’s still a hunger for live action, which we have seen with the growth of festivals. People come to expect the unexpected. It’s a sense of curiosity that draws them in.” The origin of The Fling stems from the preceding 3Foot Festival, which was ultimately designed for children. “The concept of The Fling is based around playfulness, the annual theme is to discover your inner child,” adds Liam. “We looked at all the pre-school children with envy at the 3Foot Festival having innocent, joyful fun. We decided to channel the envy of not being four years old, into a positive experience for adults. We wanted to give back that childlike quality.” The Fling Festival takes the same elements of the 3Foot Festival such as storytelling and the sandpit, and gives it a grown-up twist. You’ll find the same tents, activities and even some of the same artists. “We approached similar acts and gave them the challenge of creating a performance for adults. We like to confront expectations,” says Liam.

LIFESTYLE It’s the imagination, creativity and unknown that's adds to the curiosity surrounding The Fling Festival, something that you certainly wouldn’t expect from a council organised event. Acts are sourced from around the region and further a field and this year include Dub Pistols, a London based hip-hop and big beat band and Shaun Keavney, BBC Radio 6 Music Breakfast Show host who will perform a DJ set. Local artists include Animal Noise from Colchester, Chelmsford Gypsy band the Band of Fools and Fox and The Trots from Sudbury. It’s the support of local and under the radar acts that make The Fling a popular choice for a day out. “It’s not about headline acts,” says Liam. “It’s important the festival is a port of different things; poets, street theatre, comedy and music. “We have built a reputation on bringing artists together and presenting the audience with acts they can trust and of good quality.” However, it’s not just the variety that is attracting an audience from far and wide, the reasonable ticket price means the festival is accessible to members of the public who don’t necessarily want to spend a small fortune on a one day event. Food and drink prices within the festival are also kept at an affordable price. Liam concludes: “We’re protective and committed to keeping The Fling special. I’m looking forward to being surprised myself. The beauty of The Fling is that with 100 different activities on site, people come to the same festival but go home with different stories!” With more names still to be announced, the return of the Battle of the Bands and 11 hours of fun and frolics to be discovered, we can’t wait! Education news Children take part in themed art day

C

hildren at Maldon Court Preparatory School have taken part in a ‘Daffodil’ themed Art Day in recognition of one of their charities ‘Marie Curie’ and in preparation for the arrival of Spring. Each of the classes, from Nursery and Pre-Prep to Form 6, participated in a variety of art and craft activities which were carefully planned by the class teachers.

fashion creations at st mary’s school for girls

T

extiles students at St Mary’s School for Girls, Colchester, amazed audiences with their spectacular creations at our Fashion Show. Girls in Years 8 to 11 showed poise and confidence as they modelled garments they had made themselves, in response to a variety of design briefs. Year 8 girls made pyjama bottoms using a commercial pattern, while those in Year 9 chose their own fabrics and trims to make either a kimono or a fur gilet. GCSE students selected from three briefs – design for the theatre, the age of punk or a special occasion garment inspired by another culture. One Year 13 student, Amber Russell, from Colchester Royal Grammar School but studying A level Textiles in her own time at St Mary’s, modelled a special occasion garment inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival. The Fashion Show was a real showcase of technical ability and design flair and demonstrated the girls’ ability to rise to the challenges of researching garments for inspiration, interpreting their ideas and creating their own garments using a choice of fabrics, techniques and details.

During the afternoon the whole school studied a still life, ‘Daffodils’, by the Romanian artist Ana Maria Edulescu. Each class focussed on a different medium, which included chalk, oil pastel, paint and mosaic to recreate their own interpretation of the daffodil artwork.

EDUCATION

MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT YOU’VE GOT A bit rusty on English and maths? Then it’s probably time to brush up

T

he economy may be in recovery, but it doesn’t always feel like it. In the run-up to the General Election, apprenticeships are constantly in the news – and they’re a great way of helping young people into the workplace. But what about the over 25s, those already in work? Perhaps they’ve been in their jobs for a while, they want to progress up the career ladder, but they lack confidence. Why? It’s because their English and maths have got a bit rusty. ‘Where does that apostrophe go?’ ‘Remind me how to do percentages.’ We’ve all been there, but what can you do about it? Cambridge Regional College and the College of West Anglia have stepped up to provide a solution. They’re part of the consortium behind ‘For Business, For Life’, a new campaign alerting businesses to the fact that there is £50 million of funding available to them to pay for English and maths training for its employees.

The in-work training is entirely free to employers – and small and medium sized enterprises actually get a financial incentive to improve their employees’ skills. The body behind the campaign, the National Consortium of Colleges and Providers (NCCP), says that employees all over the country are stuck in low-paid, low-skill jobs because they lack the literacy and numeracy skills they need. They may have failed at school, or more typically they may simply have forgotten what they learnt 15 or 20 years ago. NCCP Chairman Harvey Young says: “It’s fantastic there’s so much government and media focus

on apprenticeships, which are about getting young people into work. But we want to see more attention given to those already in employment who may not be work ready, and whose lack of confidence in the key areas of English and maths is holding them – and their employers – back. “As providers, we have seen first hand the transformative effect of improved Basic Skills on employees of all ages. Some may have slipped through the net at school, but so many have simply forgotten what they have learnt. Our experience is that the vast majority of those in the workplace benefit from Basic Skills training – not just those who are aware that their English and maths are not up to scratch.” And, says Mr Young, the beauty of Basic Skills is that the training can be “wrapped around” the needs of the individual business. “It might be report-writing or something numeracy or technology related, so employees are acquiring the specific skills each particular business needs in addition to improving their writing and maths skills.”

How the funding works Basic Skills training is fully funded via the EU’s European Social Fund. And small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) receive £800 per learner for the first three learners that complete Basic Skills English or maths training, £400 at the start of the training and £400 when completed. Flower

POWER

W

edding flower trends are constantly evolving. To make the decision a little easier Eastlife forecasts the top of the crops for this summer’s weddings… Rainbow The colours of the rainbow are going to be popping up in weddings across the region this summer. Bold and bright bouquets make for a great colour pop against your dress and stand out in photos, especially if teamed with some bright shoes to match! Or perhaps you’d prefer to choose colourful centre pieces to liven up table décor. Vibrant colours such blue, red, yellow and purple are great to use.

Romantic Luxury Think big, think grand, think beautiful! Following in the footsteps of Kim Kardashian’s extravagant wedding to Kayne last year, blooms are adding some height this season. Use tall glass vases or droop elegant arrangements over the alter. Stems should be kept hidden and soft flowers such as hydrangea, hyacinths and orchids in creamy pastel colours need to be used. This is only a style for brides with a big flower budget! 58| eastlife.co.uk

WEDDINGS Simplicity Delicate soft white flowers such as roses, hydrangeas and gypsophila are great for simplistic weddings. They make a beautiful contrast against rustic wood décor and are ideal for a variety of wedding themes including country, fairytale and beach.

Wild garden The just picked from the garden look was a popular choice in 2014 and it doesn’t look like it will be going anywhere for this year. Mix together floras that look like they have come from the garden; soft blossoms and greenery. This is a great option for small budgets and it smells great too.

crowns Floral crowns are the must-have wedding accessory this year. In 2014 they were mainly reserved for bridesmaids and only the bravest of brides but this year expect to see them as gorgeously romantic alternative to the veil. Generally featuring white flowers and greenery, they are perfect if you’re having a country or festival inspired wedding.

Pretty pastels Pastels come into fashion every spring and generally follow through to summer. However, this year pastels are taking an even softer approach. Petals will be of soft and creamy tones, honoring an English garden. Pastels are a great way to combine floral and bridesmaid colours.

Hanging vases Fill small glass vases with the flowers of your choice (bright colours work best) and dot them around your wedding. They look great hanging from trees and will work as a colourful backdrop to photographs. It also works as a nice touch to table plans and guest books.

CONSUMER

Martin Lewis shopping secrets

A

company’s job is to make money, nowt wrong with that, but our job is to keep it. Some firms use a host of tricks to keep us in the dark, yet if you can uncover their secrets you can win. Their techniques are wide and varied. One example is ‘price differentiation’, where they aim to charge each customer as much as they’ll pay - often done using ‘white labels’, where the same thing is sold under different names. So here’s seven tricks to turn the tables… British Gas customer? It also operates under the name Sainsbury’s Energy but there it’s £200/year cheaper. British Gas runs Sainsbury’s Energy for the supermarket, yet there you pay far less. Sainsbury’s Energy does have separate call centres, but it’s still operated by British Gas and while like many energy firms it gets its fair share of complaints, in my most recent poll 43% rated its service ‘great’, British Gas 37%. So if for some reason you’re brand loyal and want to stick with British Gas, huge savings are still possible. However, as always price varies by region and usage, so do a comparison to see how it stacks up for you via my www.CheapEnergyClub.com Zara sells its clothes at a fraction of the price. If you’re one of millions planning a trip to Spain this summer, you may want to stop shopping at Zara here right now. Spain is Zara’s home country and it sells its clothes at vastly lower prices there. Better still, the www.zara.com Spain website has an English language option, you can compare prices before you go. This trick works for others in the same group, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Uterque. If a loan’s advertised at 3.9% rep APR, they’re allowed to charge 20%. Every loan these days is listed as a ‘representative’ or ‘rep’ APR - that means by

law only 51% of accepted applicants need to get the advertised rate. The rest can be and usually are charged more, and there’s no cap on how much more. Worse, the only way to know is to apply, and that leaves a footprint on your credit file. So be very careful. Amazon shopper? You’re entitled to music going back 16 years. If you’ve bought CDs or vinyl, you’re entitled to the downloads for nowt going as far back as 1999. To be fair Amazon doesn’t hide that you can do this, but it’s a good trick. Just login to your www.amazon.co.uk music library to see if you’ve any past tracks available. Only get good mobile signal with one network? Switch to a piggyback. There’s a way to switch provider but keep the same signal. Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. Eg. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three. So check which other providers piggyback on your existing network and see if they’re cheaper. Energy firms can’t charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn’t wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you’re allowed to switch without penalty. Play the codeshare trick - where two airlines sell the same flight. Airlines don’t shout that their partners often sell their flights too, sometimes for less. If you’re going on popular long-haul routes this can be a way to save. Eg. a return Delta flight from Heathrow to New York over Easter costs £631 - but the same booked as ‘Virgin Atlantic’ is £549. eastlife.co.uk | 61

MOTORING

A TOUCH OF CLASS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE

MERCEDESBENZ SLK

PERFORMANCE Once settled in, mirrors easily adjusted and belt on, I left the forecourt with great excitement. The sporty SLK I drove had a diesel engine. The 204 hp four-cylinder power unit puts the two-seater at the top of its class in numerous respects.

L

ast summer a motoring survey revealed that convertibles account for 1.3 million of cars on Britain’s roads. While men have always shown an eye for flashy motors, the number of women buying soft-tops has quadrupled in the last 15 years. Topping the convertible list for both sexes is the Mercedes-Benz SLK. Intrigued, I headed to Mercedes-Benz of Cambridge on a sunny spring day to find out what all the fuss was about. I must admit I was a little apprehensive about carrying out this review. Let me throw this straight out there, I’m a 27 year old woman that that generally judges a car firstly by its colour, secondly by how many shopping bags I can fit in the boot. After managing to get lost finding the garage because I’m probably one of the only people to still not own a Satnav and cause havoc by needing to change lanes in traffic to find my way, I was slightly worried that perhaps the lovely marketing team had been far too trusting to let me loose with this nippy sports car. APPEARANCE On arrival I was introduced to the stunning SLK 250. With its red exterior shining brightly in the sunshine, I was instantly in love. The dramatic styling of its gaping grill, swept back headlights and classic long bonnet make a great first impression. LED lights on the bumper come standard on all models, as do alloy wheels and the folding metal roof, which stows neatly into the boot, and was, much to my surprise, rather spacious. The interior is as pleasantly pleasing with high-quality materials displaying meticulous workmanship and sophisticated ergonomics. 62 | eastlife.co.uk

With a fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg on the combined cycle, it is the most economical roadster in its segment. Thanks to its enormous torque of 500 newton metres it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. The result is superior driving enjoyment both on winding country roads and on long motorway stretches. I had almost forgotten how fun driving could be as I left the city and headed down the A roads towards Newmarket. Initially I had thought that the sports model might make for a slightly bumpier ride but how wrong was I. Steering was light and easy and the ride smooth. The SLK grips well and in my opinion is far better to drive than its competitor models. Whether it was a straight road or winding country lane, the car was easy to control and handled the surface well. Alongside the good response, impressive acceleration and ability to perform, the car is characterised by a high level of efficiency. Its four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2143 cc generates an output of 204 hp and 500 newton metres of torque – as much as a petrol engine with twice the displacement would normally generate. This makes the SLK 250 the most powerful diesel model in its class, and gives the roadster the potential for extremely sporty performance. I’ve always been under the impression that automatic diesel cars cost much more in fuel consumption but the SLK 250 is the most economical and environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It returns 56.5 mpg and emits CO2 emissions of just 132 g/km. In other words, the diesel SLK combines thoroughbred sports car performance with the fuel economy of a sub-compact. This guarantees great driving pleasure with great fuel efficiency.

MOTORING

EXTRA TOUCHES I’ll be honest I’ve never been a fan of convertibles. The reason being I get cold and experience has revealed that sports cars are not designed for small people. With a height of 5ft 2” attempting to drive this type of model can be tricky, my legs are generally stretched to the max and I practically have to hug the steering wheel. However, the SLK posed no such problem. Though you could probably have squeezed another seat in the back after I had moved it forward, it was very comfortable to drive. It’s no wonder this model has been so popular among women. The AIRGUIDE, a heating system to warm your neck and shoulders when you have the roof down is the perfect finishing touch and means you can truly enjoy all the elements of this car. Though with summer on the horizon, here’s hoping such a feature won’t need to be used. As someone prone to reversing into the occasional wall, safety and resilience is one of the key points I look for in a car. The SLK is one of the safest cars in its class thanks to a variety of active systems. It follows an extensive safety concept, with a reinforced body befitting a roadster, plus large headbags and crash-responsive head restraints. The reasonable pricing of this motor makes it probably one of the most affordable convertibles on the market. Priced between £33,000 - £45,000 and monthly payment plans available, it’s clear to see why it’s topping motoring lists. So did I enjoy my test drive? The answer would be yes! So much so in fact that I was ready to trade my car in there and then. Two weeks later and I’m still trying to convince my husband that I need this car! choosing your first home L

ooking to buy your first home? Then choose carefully because where you first put down roots can often be where you end up settling for the rest of your life. According to data people tend to move within ten miles of their existing home and move less frequently as they get older. So a strong community, good schools, local amenities and great location should all be on your wish list even if you are looking for your first place together. Don Dunkin is sales negotiator at The Maltings, a character development close to the thriving village of Bungay on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. He said: “When you are starting out your main priority is often affordability and independence but if you can you should also look to the longer term and choose an area that you can grow into. “The Maltings is in a great location and because of the nature of the site we have a real mix of properties from large four bedroom family homes to luxury apartments to two bedroom mews homes that are perfect for couples and young families. “They have en-suite to the master bedroom as well as a downstairs loo and com with lovely gardens and two parking spaces.”

Prices start at £159,950 and are available under the Government’s help to Buy Scheme so you only need to find a 5% deposit. If you need a bit more space the end properties offer three bedrooms and they start at £184,950. Properties at The Maltings, which are built around a Grade II listed silk mill have been selling well attracting a real mix of buyers which adds to the community feel. They are attracted not only by the high specification of the luxury homes and the attention to detail but the range of amenities on the doorstep. Don said: “There are lots of facilities close by and we are opposite Bungay town Football Club which has a host of sporting activities. It is really lovely to see a development take on a life and character as more people settle in and I don’t think many of them will be planning a move for quite a while.” Pay a visit to The Maltings and settle yourself in to the luxurious show homes which are open Thursday to Monday 10am to 5pm Tel: 01986 892205

Housing market in Hertfordshire remains “steady”

T

he UK housing market is looking strong and positive going into 2015, according to the latest Residential Commentary Book published by property consultants Bidwells. In Hertfordshire the market continues to remain stable with steady increases in the house prices with a 7.9% increase across all homes and stronger 10.2% increase for new homes compared to a 5.6% increase in country homes. Across the Bidwells region during 2014, it has seen a rapid price escalation in key markets and increasing signs of development interest in a more healthy economy environment and more conducive planning context. Overall, whilst rates of growth differed across the country and local market conditions created varying levels of supply and demand, development activity, investments and prices all increased just about everywhere in 2014. Despite the forth-coming May Election and the temporary diversion this will inevitably provide, the UK economy appears robust and positive from a housing market perspective. The report considers recent trends, how the cycle is evolving and what will be the key factors, which shape the sector in 2015. Help to Buy, Stamp Duty reforms, planning policy revisions and revised mortgage procedures have all had a marked impact on the market. The data reveals that price escalation, mortgage lending, planning approvals and housing did dip in the last quarter of 2014, following a frenetic early to mid-year period.

Pricing elasticity and a more exacting mortgage market, albeit with a record low borrowing rate, started to emerge and the market steadied. This suggests a more measured market growth for 2015 which is likely to bring single digit price increases in most markets. Bidwells predicts a 5% average house price growth in the Eastern Region this year. The context for new development will remain encouraging and the report examines the current housing pipeline and its anticipated direction and impact.

Key findings in the report: •The forthcoming General Election will probably slow activity in the middle of the year, but the positive dynamics underpinning the sector are unlikely to alter significantly •The 2015 forecast for UK GDP is 2.4% •House price growth for the Eastern region over the five years to the end of 2014 was 23% •In the region new homes prices have risen by 10.6% over 2014 compared to increases in the country house sector, where prices are up by 6% •In Cambridgeshire, in the final months of the year, market values in the large country house and townhouse market were down 1.5% - reflecting the recent Stamp Duty changes •The regional house price average for homes in Norfolk was up by 4.9%, in Cambridgeshire it was 9.8%

We've never really considered our fastidious attention to detail as anything other than normal practice – it's only our customers who've convinced us otherwise over the years. Our insistence on using only the finest hardwoods from managed forests to our 'over and above' specification on all levels have become hallmarks of our work. For example, every hardwood component is individually hand made, our door frame sections are much heavier and more substantial and our windows and doors use multi-locking systems for increased security as standard.

Make an impressive addition to your home

A

conservatory allows us to make the most of the garden whether it’s raining or sunshine, and with summer just around the corner there’s never been a better time to consider adding one to your home. In most cases a conservatory becomes a second living room. An extra place to eat dinner, for the kids to do their homework or somewhere to relax. After all it’s usually a more cost-effective solution than moving home. Before you start choosing your design it’s vital you do some homework. Browse interior design magazines, refining your choice to two or three different styles. Call up conservatory companies you’ve seen advertised in magazines or who have been recommended by friends and family. Outlining your initial budget before you get a quote will help you stay on track. Caroline Topping, owner of Quayside Conservatories in Beccles says: “Planning your project can be extremely confusing and stressful. The conservatory must suit the property to which it is to become part of, whilst also meeting the requirements which you have for it. Do you require an extended living area, extension to the kitchen, or a traditional garden in which to relax and enjoy your garden? You should be aware if Planning Permission/Building Regulations is required from your local council, or whether you need Listed Building or Conservation Area consent. All these things can be clarified with the assistance of a reputable conservatory company.”

Conservatories don’t necessarily come cheap so it’s best to get the most out of your budget. Caroline adds: “You should look at your conservatory as an investment, which you will only wish to carry out once. Therefore ensure it is doing the job you require of it and the most common mistake that it is large enough. Does it have the right glass? Adding blinds at a later date can be as much or even more that the cost of the original building. “To cut corners and buy a cheaper building can cost you more in the long run as you will either end up knocking it down and replacing, extending or not using it. It is worth making that little extra investment to make sure your new addition is a pleasure to have and enjoy and not an expensive mistake!” Though styles have evolved over the years, Caroline suggests that, “the orangery is now ‘back’.” The flat roof area and brick pillars or decorative pilasters being more sought after giving the appearance of the room being more a structural part of the house with a large ceiling area for recessed lights and smaller lantern glazed area allowing light in whilst also giving shade internally. Bi-folding doors are also very popular allowing whole lengths of opening sections to allow you to look unobstructed into your garden. Whichever style you opt for be sure it’s the right one for your home that you can enjoy for years to come. eastlife.co.uk | 73

Sow and Grow T

hough it may be sunshine and showers April is an exciting month to start paying the garden some attention. Sylvia Newman is a Cambridge based garden designer with over 15 years of experience working on all types of projects, she reveals her top tips sowing seeds this month… Cut down on food miles There are few more satisfying things in life than growing your own veg. From pouring over seed catalogues to prepping beds, protecting young seedlings and ultimately picking fresh herbs and veg, the process of nurturing a patch of land to yield fresh, homegrown produce is an incredibly rewarding experience for any gardener. Site selection Most vegetable crops are annuals, which mean that they develop to maturity in relatively short timescales. To get the most out of any veg patch it’s important to pick a site that will provide ideal growing conditions so that these plants can hit the ground running (so to speak); this means abundant sun and shelter from the elements. In other words, avoid picking a spot under a tree or next to a shade-casting shed. Ground prep Now it’s time to start digging. When creating new beds it pays to be meticulous. Eradicating roots and weeds during prep will help ensure that weed control is manageable throughout the summer and that delicate seedlings won’t be choked out or overtaken by garden thugs such as bindweed, marestail,

Japanese knotweed or the ultimate nemesis of gardeners everywhere - ground elder. If digging over a completely new bed, consider adding in some well-rotted manure or compost to enhance the soil quality prior to planting. Seed selection Seed catalogues are seductive. It’s all too easy to be enchanted by the thought of growing everything from artichokes to aubergines but the key in an intensive garden patch is to maximise productivity. Look for seeds that produce ‘cut and come again’ plants as these will yield bountiful harvests that replenish rapidly during the growing season. For beginning gardeners or those working with limited space, look for cut and come again salad leaves, annual herbs like basil, oregano and parsley, leafy greens like spinach, kale and chard and a few courgettes which take up quite a bit of room but produce abundant crops and edible flowers. If there’s additional space, consider planting some legumes such as sugar snap peas or french beans. These will need trellising but add height and interest to the patch. Growing veg at home is the type of hobby that can easily become addictive. Nurturing plants and harvesting delicious crops that boast zero food miles make for satisfying days in the garden and delicious, healthy and inexpensive meals all summer. ith the promise of warmer weather, gardens, parks, fields and woodland all appear to be stirring and waking from their winter rest. Tiny shoots are peeping from silently disturbed earth and the most courageous buds are venturing forth beyond their parent branches. With a definite feel of spring in the air, this month we explore the ‘Wild Works’ exhibition at the wonderful Over Gallery in Cambridge. From the 7 March until 18 April you can catch a collection of beautiful paintings, pastels and original prints from three of Britain’s leading wildlife artists: Bruce Pearson, Dafila Scott and Matt Underwood. Sculptor Anine Cockwell and potter Lorraine Izon will also have themed work on display including enigmatic animals of stone and magical earthenware birds. In fact, amongst the many inspiring works, according to gallery owner Helen Taylor: “Fenland birds, flowers, insects and mammals can all be found.” Whether capturing the delicate movement of a bird or the fluid twist of an otter, artist of 30 years Bruce Pearson portrays the rhythm and restlessness of the natural world. Watching and observing for hour upon hour, Bruce sketches and studies his subject matter with serious commitment. Often completing his paintings “en plein air”, he is just as likely to take his gathered information back to the studio to produce one of his dynamic yet sensitive original linocuts. This latest collection includes fenland inspired pieces as well as work from his book ‘Troubled Waters’ which focuses attention on the urgent conservation needs in the Southern Ocean.

Award-winning printmaker Matt Underwood is no less committed to nature. A keen beekeeper and naturalist, Matt also has an eye for detail. His accurate observation is conveyed freely and expressively through warm joyous colours and textures, using watercolour and woodblock. With this less seen combination of method and medium, he creates uplifting images of birds, insects and plants, which exude light, air and movement. Dafila Scott is also inspired by wildlife and landscape. Producing both abstract and figurative work, she too is often influenced by her fenland surroundings. As a trained zoologist her knowledge of her subject matter is comprehensive and accurate. This enables her to work from memory as well as direct observation. Her painterly oils, pastels and watercolours weave a sense of understanding, admiration and empathy for the animals and environment that she so obviously loves. Open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, this beautiful gallery hosts a superb selection of artists of the highest quality. You can enhance your visit further by enjoying a leisurely walk along the River Great Ouse and perhaps a break for lunch at one of the local pubs. 7 March - 18 April The Over gallery “Wild Works” 25 High Street, Over, Cambridge, CB24 5NB Tel: 01954 230997 helen@overgallery.co.uk eastlife.co.uk | 79

ourtyard Arts is Hertford’s leading visual arts centre and has been flying the flag for art in the community for almost 20 years. 10 years ago Courtyard Arts launched its first Open Exhibition; an exhibition open to all artists to exhibit in our contemporary gallery. Entry fees are modest; artists pay £5 entry fee and £3 per piece of work (£2 for members) and last year it attracted over 200 entries. Every year it appoints a different judging panel and award a Best in Show Prize of £200. This year’s panel will comprise three major figures from the local art world: Roger Jeffs, Painter, Sara Saunders Printmaker and John Little, Painter. There are currently plans of an ambitious development of the Centre in order to cater for the increased demand for art classes and to provide more facilities for visitors to the gallery. The revamped building will be a much more exciting venue for art lovers and the public to enjoy and a real improvement to Hertford’s art life. With the new Open Exhibition, now is a particularly good time to visit. There will be an impressive display of work in different styles from figurative to abstract. Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage

C

rouch, Touch, Pause, Engage – a new play directed by Max Stafford-Clark and written by Robin Soan, will be performed at Great Hall, The Leys School, Cambridge, on Thursday, 30 April during its tour of England and Wales. It tells the story of Welsh International Gareth Thomas and how he came out in the macho world of rugby. Produced by the Out of Joint theatre company and the National Theatre of Wales, the play – recommended for viewers of 14-plus - has been receiving five-star reviews from the critics. Thomas, known as “Alfie”, won 100 caps for Wales and captained the national side. The son of a postman from Bridgend married his childhood sweetheart and kept a lid on his sexuality. But on the eve of one of the most important games of his career, he received a warning: The Sun newspaper was going to “out” him as gay. His personal drama is played out against the backdrop of his home town of Bridgend, which was at the time a victim of tabloid intrusion following the deaths of several young residents. The play, which takes its title from the instructions given by a rugby referee as two scrums prepare to clash, has been compiled from interviews with real people and in conjunction with Thomas himself – he worked with the director and playwright during a week-long workshop in Bridgend. ALL the actors in the cast play Thomas. It’s a great story about sport, politics, secrets, life and learning to be yourself – The Times gave it five stars and described it as “staggeringly moving”. Tickets £9 (£5.50 concessions) The Leys School, Trumpington Road, Cambridge. www.theleys.net/boxoffice Photo by Robert Workman

New exhibition at Bircham Gallery

Exclusive animal artwork at Redwings

T

his month the Bircham Gallery, Holt will launch its latest exhibitions of paintings, prints and ceramics from 25 April to 20 May.

E

xclusive equine and animal artwork will be available to view and buy at Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s first ever art sale fro 3 to 6 and 10 to 13 April, 10am to 4pm. This month Redwings’ Aylsham visitor centre in North Norfolk opens its doors to art collectors, Sanctuary supporters and those who love all things horsey. Here, you’ll be able to peruse and purchase pieces from Redwings’ collection of donated artwork; from reproduction prints of well-known paintings and classically framed works depicting traditional countryside scenes, to modern colourful pieces by both amateurs and professionals.

Rosemary Vanns will show her range of prints. She feels she is instinctively a printmaker, mark making being fundamental to her work and colour and composition the predominating element over the illustrative. Clare Conrad is a ceramicist whose work captures the poignant beauty and drama of weathering and corrosion - the point of balance between existence and decay. Clare finds the vessel form the most satisfying to use and enjoys the traditional method of wheel-throwing, which adds to the sense of capturing time. Bircham Gallery, 14 Market Place, Holt, NR25 6BW Tel: 01263 713312 www.birchamgallery.co.uk THE COLOURS OF NORFOLK

There will also be a wonderful collection of sketches, watercolours and acrylics created for Redwings by its supporters, including portraits of the charity’s Adoption Star residents Wiggins the donkey, pretty Victoria and the Aylsham visitor centre’s very own “Black Beauty” lookalike Maya. Prices of artwork will range from £5 to £425, so there will be something to suit every taste and budget, plus every penny raised from the art sale will go directly towards the care of Redwings’ 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Redwings Aylsham is the Sanctuary’s newest visitor centre. The charity is also hoping to raise as much as possible from the art sale to continue vital development work – that is, the building of more paddocks thereby increasing the charity’s capacity to rescue more horses. Redwings Horse Sanctuary was established in 1984. It has grown to be the largest horse sanctuary in the UK, working to save horses, ponies, donkeys and mules whose future would otherwise be bleak. Trevor Woods is a popular contemporary artist, whose strong, graphic paintings of Norfolk, London, and Italy, branch the link between a distinctive modern style and instantly recognisable scenes. IT’S AIRBOURNE the survivors guide to hayfever

I

t won’t be long before some of us are struck down by red itchy eyes and running noses. To help prepare us for hay fever season Bedfordshire based, top airborne allergies expert, Max Wiseberg, tells us how to get a step ahead… Hay fever has nothing to do with hay or with fever, but is a result of the body’s reaction to harmless pollen. The body thinks the pollen is not harmless and so it goes through a complicated process which results in the production of an excess of histamines. Histamines are good for us in the right quantities – in the brain they keep us alert, attentive and awake. But when we have too many histamines we end up with the symptoms of hay fever. For most people these include one or more of runny nose, sneezing, sore eyes, itchy roof of mouth, ears and throat, headaches, tiredness and lethargy. Many people who are prone to hay fever find that the severity of their symptoms varies from year to year. Some years it is so mild that it’s just an irritation that is not annoying enough to bother treating. So it’s only the people with the severest of reactions who tend to be bothered with preparation. But when hay fever becomes so debilitating for the rest, they find themselves diving into the nearest pharmacy or health food shop in search of some instant relief.

Over the counter Most pharmacies will suggest some anti-histamines and steroid nasal sprays at this point, however it is always recommended that you start taking these treatments a few weeks before you start to suffer with the symptoms. This is clearly only practical for those people who know when their hay fever will start or who suffer every year at the same sort of time - and most people don’t know when that is. We know that over 90 per cent of people prone to hay fever are allergic to grass pollen, and we know that grass pollen is released between May and July. So it is sensible, if you want to use these treatments, to buy them early and start taking them at the end of March or beginning of April. Many people find that these treatments are not enough. An Australian study of GP’s patients found that 60 per cent said the treatments worked but worked poorly, and since histamines are important to keep us awake and alert, the anti-histamines can make you drowsy. Natural remedies Fortunately, there are an increasing number of natural remedies available which have more and more evidence behind them to give you confidence that they can make a difference.

HEALTH

Organic, drug-free allergen barrier balms have been shown to trap all sorts of airborne allergens. In a study during the summer of 2014, 78 per cent of participants found it helped with some or all of their hay fever symptoms. Trials have also shown that acupressure bands worn on the elbow, which act on the Qu-Chi point are effective in relieving the symptoms of hay fever. In addition, there are drug free nasal washes, which literally wash the pollen out the nose, thereby providing fast relief. The best thing about all these is that they can be used alongside the pharmaceutical remedies and in conjunction with each other. Where doctors used to prescribe more and more powerful drugs, the attitude seems to be changing and doctors are now suggesting that people use several complementary solutions together to get the best possible results. For more information on preparing for the allergy season, see the guides at www.haymax.biz

Top Tips

Of course the best way to stop hay fever is to avoid the pollen in the first place. Here are a few tips to help you: Pollen counts are highest in the mornings and evenings so try to avoid being outside during these times. Drying washing outside will catch pollen, which you then bring inside and spread around the house. Dry inside or dry when pollen counts are low, during the middle of the day. When you do have to go out, apply an allergen barrier balm on your nose to trap some of the pollen and other allergens before they get in. Change clothes and wash your hair when coming in from outside as your clothes will bring the pollen into your house. Be aware that animals will also carry the pollen into the house on their fur. Wear wraparound sunglasses. As well as helping to prevent pollen from touching the eyes, sunglasses help to de-stress sore eyes. Applying allergen barrier balm around the eyes can also help. Keep windows shut in the house and the car. More modern cars have pollen filters so make sure they are replaced regularly when your car is serviced. Using air purifiers in the house can help remove pollen. Boosting the immune system and eating foods containing quercetin, a natural anti histamine might also help. Capers, red onions, watercress and kale all contain it and if you eat pineapples at the same time, they contain Bromelain which helps the body absorb the quercetin. Of course you can buy supplements with Quercetin and Bromelain (Quercetin Complex). You can buy supplements to help boost your immune system too!

Harleston Antiques & Vintage Street Market Sunday 21 June ast June Harleston, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, revived an ancient local tradition of holding a large market in the centre of town on the Feast of St John. It was such a huge success that it will take place again on Sunday 21June, with over 80 stalls selling antiques and vintage furniture, curios, collectibles and clothes. In addition there will be entertaining street performers, buskers and lots of specialist street food outlets. Many local shops, cafes and pubs will be open too, and after the Street Market ends there will be a street party (6.30 - 9.30pm) filling the square with live bands and further entertainment. iscover character and charm a stone’s throw away from the North Norfolk Coast

With its glorious beaches, coastal walks and wide-open spaces, the North Norfolk Coast is a great place to explore when the sun shines. If you’re looking to make the most of it, the traditional town of Burnham Market is a great base to explore.

Creative types will love Mable’s Paint Pot where both children and adults can try their hand at pot painting or transform an item with decopatching. It’s also home to a quaint sweet shop with sweets traditionally displayed in large glass jars and served in paper bags.

Things to do The town boasts an old world charm with traditional retailers and over 30 independent stores. Besides shopping there’s also plenty to see and do. A trip to the Burnham Grapvine Gallery is must for art lovers. The work shown perpetuates the ethos of the Grapvine in Norwich with a vibrant mix of contemporary painting and ceramics. This month offers the opportunity to see works by Elizabeth Peer until 12 April.

Dalegate Market provides a much loved shopping experience, supplying locals and visitors alike with all they need, from groceries to hot chocolate and warm clothes to lunch. An oasis in a wild and natural landscape the market is open year round.

For a relaxing afternoon head to Creake Abbey. It’s home to a stunning café and food hall, fantastic shops and studios plus an award-winning farmers’ market together with the ruins of an Augustinian abbey founded in 1206.

One of the town’s most popular establishments is The Hoste. A 62-room hotel with a fine dining restaurant, a buzzing local bar, and an intimate spa, the property has undergone major refurbishment over the last three years. It consists of six individual

AREA FOCUS

SPOTLIGHT ON

CAMBRIDGE S

pend sunny spring days in the beautiful city of Cambridge

Cambridge may be a small city but it still packs a punch. As well as the world-famous University, there are medieval streets and a thriving nightlife to explore. The city’s compactness means you can easily explore its historic churches, bridges and museums on foot. Attractions Those with green fingers should head to the Botanic Garden to experience the impressive variety of plant species on display. Since its opening in 1846, Cambridge University Botanic Garden has been an inspiration for gardeners, an exciting introduction to the natural world for families and a refreshing oasis for all our visitors. This heritage-listed Garden has been designed for both year-round interest and seasonal inspiration so, whenever you visit, you will find plants to intrigue and enchant. Cambridge is home to many fascinating museums, includ-

ing the Fitzwilliam. Its collection includes antiquities, applied arts, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings by Constable, Hogarth, and Gainsborough. One of its current exhibition is ‘Treasured Possessions from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment’, which shows a dazzling journey through the decorative arts: from the hand-crafted luxuries of the Renaissance to the first stirrings of mass commerce in the Enlightenment. The exhibition is available until 6 September. If you like your art contemporary, then check out the exhibitions at Kettle’s Yard. You can also see Charles Darwin’s specimens at the Zoology Museum, or don an icy beard and take an expedition to the Scott Polar Institute. The fan-vaulted ceiling of the iconic King’s College Chapel is also well worth the admission price and the resulting neck strain. If you feel like sitting back and

relaxing, make sure you take a leisurely punt along the River Cam. You’ll find a number of reputable tour companies to take you along, or you can be brave and go alone – just try not to fall in - it’s surprisingly harder than it looks! Culture & Shopping If theatre is your passion, then simply choose from just one of the four big venues offering everything you could want; drama, comedy, music and more. When it comes to live music, Cambridge has it all from classical recitals in historic 13th century colleges to local bands trying to make it big in one of the city’s great pubs. Cambridge has the high street shops we all know and love, but for a more exclusive shopping experience head to the market where people have been selling their wares since Saxon times. The busy market is available from Monday to Saturday and offers everything from fruit and flowers to hats and books and eastlife.co.uk | 101

OUT & ABOUT IN

STEVENAGE S

tevenage is a town with plenty to see and do

A visit to Stevenage and its surrounding villages offers variety in every sense of the word. You can shop in major High Street chains or individual shops, see inns that Dick Turpin knew, look at modern architecture or admire ancient churches and Tudor cottages. Walk down the Avenue that writer Forster described in Howards End or watch the latest films at a 16-screen Cineworld on the Leisure Park.

At the Walkern Gallery you can see the work of Stephen Lowe along with other local and professional artists. Knebworth House, close to Stevenage, is well worth a visit, not only a fabulous stately home, you can spend the whole day there, visiting the Dinosaur Trail and the children’s adventure playground. Knebworth has formal gardens that are particularly beautiful in the spring and a tearoom and a gift shop.

Things to do Stevenage, the first of the country’s post-war new towns, has a wide range of facilities including the Gordon Craig Theatre, which has a great calendar of performances, check out page 123 for this month’s listings.

Described as the green jewel in Stevenage’s crown, Fairlands Valley Parks is 120 acres of parkland in the heart of the town, which offers activities for youngsters such as its adventurous high ropes and water sports on the lake.

The town also has a swimming pool, indoor market and a thriving museum underneath the modern church of St George and St Andrew. The nearby Roaring Meg retail park caters for out-of-town shoppers while Stevenage Old Town retains the character of an original Medieval settlement.

Keen golfers should check out the Stevenage Golf Centre located in Aston, a rural part of the town. It houses a superb Par 72, 18 hole course, designed by John Jacobs and is one of the finest designed courses in Hertfordshire. There is also a 9-hole Pitch & Putt course, which is ideal for beginners to brush up on technique, and also for the

established golfer to fine-tune their short game. Food, Drink & Sleeping As you’d expect Stevenage is not short of a restaurant or two. The town has a restaurant catering for every cuisine from Italian to Greek and Indian to Mediterranean. In the town centre you’ll find many budget hotels such as the Holiday Inn, Premier Inn, Novotel and Ibis. There’s also a number of affordable B&B for those looking for a homely stay. Spring is here, the sun is shining, and there are lots of fantastic places to go and things to do in Suffolk

T

his month, we’ve been thinking about how great Suffolk is a place to retreat to when urban living becomes a bit too much. In today’s busy world, more and more people are seeking out the simpler things in life as an antidote to daily stress. At less than 2 hours’ drive-time from London and the Midlands, or from one hour on the train, Suffolk offers urbanites the ideal spot for a weekend of indulgence or introspection with some very special places to visit. Go off the grid in the heart of Suffolk Much of Suffolk remains subject to variable strength of mobile signal and wifi, which makes it ideal if you need to disconnect from your devices for a time. A number of unusual properties are available to rent, including Purton Green. This thatched cottage dates in part to 1250 and is the sole surviving construction of a long-lost village meaning that it is 300m from the nearest road, ensuring that you enjoy uninterrupted peace and quiet. If your tastes are for something more contemporary, why not book a weekend at the recently-renovated Hex Cottage at Wilderness Reserve, Sibton. Perfectly sized for two, the cottage has no mains electricity and is surrounded by meadows and woodland making it a truly escapist destination.

AREA FOCUS

SPRING in SUFFOLK Blow away the cobwebs in the great outdoors Across the northern part of Suffolk lie the East Anglian Brecks. Far less well-known than the nearby Broads, the Brecks offer an alternative landscape with a special climate, geology and land use history. Almost half of the area has been given protected status for its wildlife or geological interest, and is perfect to explore on foot, on two wheels or on horseback. If you’re seeking to reconnect with your spirituality, try the countywide Angels and Pinnacles project, which offers a series of walking trails, each starting from a Grade 1 listed church and signposting the way to three additional churches in the vicinity. A number of cycling routes have also been produced which similarly involve riding between some of the county’s finest ecclesiastical treasures. For those who find their inner peace near the seaside, take a walk along the country’s eastern coastline and enjoy the shingle beaches, wild landscapes, sweeping vistas and unique additions such as The Scallop and the Martello Tower at Aldeburgh, soon to be joined by one of Antony Gormley’s LAND sculptures celebrating 50 years of the Landmark Trust. The month of May brings the Suffolk Walking Festival and over 90 pre-arranged walks, many guided by local experts, exploring a wide variety of landscapes. Treat yourself at one of Suffolk’s luxury spas The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel offers a range of unusual treatments, including a chocolate hydration wrap (available during April only) and lavender poultice massage. Clarice House, with spas in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, offers Swedish massages including a new baobab oil back and neck massage. Weaver’s House spa, opening at the end of March at The Swan at Lavenham has a range of therapies available, and a special ‘couples room’ where you can lie side-by-side with your other half, or chat with a friend while enjoying one of over 30 facial and body treatments. Set in the beautiful woodland of Elveden Forest, Aqua Sana spa boasts the widest choice of globally inspired spa experiences available in the UK, ranging from a Roman-inspired Laconium to the Indian Blossom Steamroom via a Tyrolean garden and Turkish hammam. Book in for a day of indulgence away from it all, or as part of a longer break at Center Parcs.

Feed your body and your soul When it comes to food, Suffolk has long followed the philosophy that the tastiest ingredients are the ones available on your doorstep. The county is renowned for its plethora of high-quality producers and eateries, from Blythburgh pork and Marriages flour to Aspall cider and the Adnams and Greene King breweries. Suffolk’s many award-winning eateries include three named in the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide 2015: the Shepherd & Dog near Stowmarket, the Packhorse Inn at Moulton and the Ramsholt Arms on the banks of the river Deben not far from Woodbridge. For foodies who would like to expand their own repertoire, cookery courses abound including an extensive range at Kenton Hall Estate whilst budding bakers can head to Pump St Bakery in Orford, namechecked at this year’s Oscars for their amazing doughnuts! Suffolk Food Hall is an awardwinning farm shop on a grand scale with locallyproduced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables spread over 8,000 square feet. Take in the views of the stunning historic building and enjoy the green space. The Cathedral has a busy concert and recital calendar throughout the year. The heritage and cultural doesn’t stop here, there’s plenty more to see including the Norman Tower dating back to 1120, Moyse’s Hall Museum on the market place since 1180, a former gaol and police station; still looking good as the oldest building in town, The Guildhall, a medieval masterpiece and The Malthouse Project which is now the heritage centre. Art lovers and creative types should pay a visit to Smith Row. Located in an elegant designed building, once the town’s Market Cross theatre, the gallery houses local art, jewellery and ceramics and has changing exhibitions and events throughout the year.

The Apex is the town’s hub for entertainment. It hosts fashion events, comedy shows and more. This month kids can look forward to The Amazing Bubble Man on 4 April, while music fans will enjoy likes of a Kate Bush tribute artist on 5 April, pianist John Lill performs on 10 April and legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb on the 14 April. Shopping Bury St Edmunds boasts an impressive array of shopping opportunities. The Arc, a modern shopping centre is home to over 30 well-known retailers, while dotted around the town you’ll also find boutiques and independent stores. The award-winning market, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, showcases a wide range of fresh local produce, including meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits and flower shops.
