Welcome to Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds is a lovely and tranquil market town in the middle of Suffolk situated just off of the A14 trunk road. It is served by trains from Ipswich and Cambridge and has a comprehensive local bus service. The town is steeped in history and has a wonderful national and international reputation for its oral designs having won many awards over the past 25 years. The town offers a great variety of shops and food and drink establishments and as the town is such a lovely place to live there are ample estate agents and solicitors in town to provide all the services required for those who wish to move here to live Ourburystedmunds is the destination brand for the town launched by BID4Bury towards the end of 2011 to promote the town and to encourage visitors to come and see us. We have created the ourburystedmunds.com website that promotes all of our businesses in the town and details any offers or promotions our businesses are running. At Christmas last year we launched the ourburystedmunds iphone and smart phone app to further assist visitors and residents alike when they visit the town. This app is downloadable and at no cost to the user. During the current recession businesses in Bury St Edmunds have had a tricky time but the town centre remains vibrant and we want to welcome as many people as possible and to encourage them to come and see us.

Due to our location the most favoured means of transport used to get people to the town is the car and to encourage people to stay for an extended visit the long stay parking charges offer very good value with it only costing £2.20 to stay all day and these car parks are only a 5 minute walk from the town centre so why not save yourself a bit of cash and take a leisurely stroll into town to see all that is on offer for you to see and enjoy. Throughout the year there are many events taking place in the town such as the Whitsun Fayre incorporating the ower market and the fabulously successful Christmas Fayre that attracts thousands of people into town and this year will take place between 23rd and 25th November this year. The next top quality event in town is the Food and Drink Festival that we are hosting over the August Bank Holiday where attractions include a celebrity chef on both the 26th and 27th August, a chilli festival, a farmers market and world and medieval markets plus loads of entertainment for the children including a selection of farm animals and other creatures. A day out in Bury can involve such variety and fun for young and old alike and the Food and Drink Festival will be demonstrate all that the town has to offer and I hope you are able to come along and experience our lovely town. Mark Cordell Chief Executive at Bid4Bury 3

Historical

Bury The town of Bury St Edmunds is steeped in history and its existence can be traced back over a thousand years. The town has a connection with the Magna Carta and the motto of the town “Shrine of a King, Cradle of the Law encapsulates how the town has played a part in the history of the Nation, the rights of its citizens and the structure of the law that many countries across the world have sought to emulate.

6

7

Historical Bury

The more historical landmarks of the town are situated in the vicinity of the picturesque Angel Hill which sits at the entrance of Abbeygate Street which leads visitors into the town centre. The town is named after St Edmund, who was King of England until his death in 869AD at the hands of the Vikings. Legend has it that he was offered his life in exchange for renouncing Christianity which he refused to do. The Abbey Gate, which was rebuilt in 1347, after the original structure had been destroyed as a consequence of a local uprising in 1327. It is part of the original perimeter wall of the ancient Abbey and within the Abbey Gardens are the ruins from the original Abbey.

8

Situated alongside the award-winning Abbey Gardens, St Edmundsbury Cathedral offers the perfect mix of heritage, retail and relaxation for the discerning visitor. Once part of the great Abbey of St Edmund, a major centre of pilgrimage in medieval England, the present day Cathedral has developed from the parish church of St James into the inspiring building it is today, with the iconic Millennium Tower dominating the skyline of the town. Today visitors can enjoy the enlarged church with its new tower and vaulted ceiling, Treasury, Shop and a wonderful café/restaurant, known as the Refectory. Throughout the year there are art exhibitions, organ recitals and special events. Guided tours of the Cathedral are available daily at 11.30 a.m. (except Sundays). All visitors to the Cathedral can be assured of a very warm welcome. Next to the Cathedral is the imposing Norman Tower which is believed to have been built in the 12th Century which was a gateway to the abbey complex. It houses the bells to the neighbouring Cathedral and is the best preserved of all of the abbey buildings.

Behind the Norman Tower are the arches of the west front of the former abbey which have built around to create houses. Within this area, the Great Churchyard is the iconic statue of Saint Edmund by Dame Elizabeth Frink. St Marys Church completes this run of historical places of worship and was built between 1290 and 1490, as part of the abbey complex. It is the third largest parish church in the UK, with the second longest aisle and the largest west window. It has a unique hammer beam “angel” roof and Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII is buried in the grounds. These are just a few of the historical buildings that make Bury St Edmunds such a wonderful place to visit.

9

Arts, Culture and Tourism

The Abbey Gardens are one of the most popular visitor attractions with manicured lawns and wonderful floral displays throughout the year. The gardens were created within the walls of the former medieval monastery and recently the children’s play area has been completely revamped. The park was first laid out as botanical gardens in 1831 and has been open to the public since 1912. The floral displays include over 40,000 spring bulbs and wonderful summer blooms and the gardens have always played an integral part in the many national and international awards the town has won for its floral displays over the past 25 years.

Bury prides itself on providing a plethora of activities for both residents and visitors and here are details of just some of what is on offer in the town.

Greene King has been brewing beer in the town since 1799 and now provides a visitors centre and guided tours to give a greater understanding to the whole brewing process. The museum provides storyboards, artefacts and audio presentations which provide a fascinating insight into the history and art of brewing. The tour includes the best view of Bury St Edmunds from the Brew house roof and a tutored tasting of the great beers available in the lovely Brewery Tap. 10

www.ourburystedmunds.com Once you have completed this visit why not just walk across the road to the Theatre Royal. The Theatre is the most unique and eye-catching auditorium in the country. Built in 1819 and designed by acclaimed neo-classical architect William Wilkins (also responsible for the National Gallery and University College London) it’s the last remaining Regency-era playhouse in the UK. Since the restoration in 2007, the theatre is the only one in the country able to give audiences a taste of an authentic nineteenth century theatre-going experience. The Theatre prides itself on the wonderful variety and eclectic mix its programme provides. Drama is at the forefront of the offering both by visiting companies and the professionally created in-house productions which are amongst the most popular events in their calendar, with the undoubted highlight being the wonderful annual family pantomime. Around these new shows, is a packed programme featuring some of the biggest names and theatre companies in the country. The Theatre Royal truly has something for everyone, from Shakespeare to stand-up and classic drama to captivating poetry.

11

Complementing the Theatre Royal is the thoroughly modern apex venue housed within the heart of the Arc shopping complex. The apex is the music, entertainment, business and community venue in town and it offers a wide variety of events in the centre of town. From classical music to pop, rock, jazz, blues, world, country and folk, the apex delivers a diverse programme of music, and also hosts the monthly Fat Cat Comedy Club, a range of dance events and offers many free events throughout the year. The contemporary art gallery and coffee bar are open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, for visitors to enjoy a drink and relax in the comfortable sofas and beautiful surroundings. Exhibitions change on a regular basis, with all work based on the theme of music. Alongside the extensive entertainment programme, The apex is also available for hire with flexible facilities, including a unique moveable floor in the main auditorium which can be configured for various layouts, and 2 studio rooms, the venue is perfect for all occasions, including meetings, banquets, conferences, exhibitions, product launches or parties.

12

Arts, Culture and Tourism The town boasts two impressive cinemas, one owned by Cineworld is situated on Parkway and has a number of national brand restaurants nearby. It offers all the modern facilities expected of a multiplex cinema. In the heart of the town, in Hatter Street, is the quaint and comfortable Abbeygate Picturehouse where you can enjoy watching a film in either of the comfortable screens with glass of wine or a hot beverage in one of their comfy armchairs or in a two seater settee! Smiths Row is a contemporary art gallery housed in an historic building overlooking the market place in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Regency House Hotel offers quality hotel accommodation including a selection of double rooms, twin rooms and single rooms. The hotel has a recently refurbished bar serving a comprehensive selection of light meals and bar snacks as well as a varied range of fine wines and beers to suit everyone. The restaurant currently serves a superb A La Carte menu. The restaurant is open to the public as well as guests with seating for 60 and the hotel also caters for wedding receptions, parties and other functions to suit all tastes in a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Nestling within the historic grid and conservation area, The Fox Inn and Restaurant is situated beside the Abbey Gardens and within five minutes walk of the town centre and Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. Fresh ‘gastro’ food and high quality drinks, particularly cask ale, awaits, all thoughtfully prepared within a relaxed informal environment for both food and drink at lunch and in the evening. 32

The stunning 15th-century building located opposite the Abbey Gardens is just a stroll from the famous cathedral. Refurbished with style and panache by passionate owners, it draws foodies for seasonal dishes that champion local produce: free-range farm meats, Bury-baked bread, organic milk and local free range eggs. Escape the shops and bag a table by the fire in the Green Room, replete with fine Jacobean paneling, painted Lloyd Loom chairs and fresh flowers. The food is top quality and there is also the opportunity to stay the night. Beautiful, hugely comfortable bedrooms, crafted from a period barn in 2008, individually styled using locally sourced and reclaimed materials are the cherry on the cake. Expect oak floors, old brick walls, Cole & Sons wallpapers, handmade brass beds, super-swish bathrooms, and, in the spacious and raftered Hayloft Suite, a super-size contemporary oak four-poster with a bath for two.

Professional Services

The town centre of Bury St Edmunds prides itself as being home to more than just shops and restaurants. There has always been a wide variety of top quality professional businesses and this remains the case today.

The majority of Professional Services are within the Medieval Grid area of the town but these businesses are also spread throughout the town and account for around 20% of all of businesses in the Business Improvement District. Bury has a long tradition of top quality solicitors and Greene and Greene in Guildhall Street typifies this as a company and one that is well established in the town. In the same street there are a number of other firms of solicitors. Additionally Rudlings and Wakelam, Willett and Co and Burnett Barker also provide a wide variety of legal services across the town.

Pick Everard in Looms Lane and the Whitworth Partnership in Hatter Street provide a comprehensive selection of architectural services and the Co-operative in Lower Baxter Street, Ling Cook on Angel Hill and NFU Mutual in Risbygate Street all provide a wide range of insurance products. The town has a number of Chartered Accountants including Gascoynes and Jacobs Allen who, after a recent merger, are recognised technically by Sage as one of only a few practices nationally to be an Accredited Accounting Partner in Sage accounts, payroll and CRM software solution. Financial Advisors include St Edmundsbury Financial Services and Churchgate Accountants and 34

the town has a great selection of estate agents providing solutions for the housing demand, both rental and freehold, within the town. Other businesses within this sector that have a presence in town include miuk who offer a comprehensive web design and development service, training opportunities are also available through Seetec and TNG and there are also job opportunities provided by Adecco and Cooper Lomaz. The town also offers the services of two auction houses, one being Bonhams in Churchgate Street who specialise in fine art and antiques. The other is Lacy Scott, off of Risbygate Street, who have had a presence in the town for nearly 150 years and who hold regular auctions each month focusing upon fine art and antiques, 20th century design, collectables, toys and household furniture. They also offer a full house clearance service. Both businesses also provide a valuation service.
