NEW Low running costs and high specifications are just two good reasons to opt for a new build home. Here’s some great developments across the region
Storey Homes is redeveloping the 1960s listed former town hall building in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. The new development will include the transformation of the Georgian style town hall building into 10,000sqft of office space. In addition, the adjoining 1990s building will be restored to provide 26 apartments. Available properties will include a collection of one, two and three bedroom apartments with penthouses on the top floor offering exceptional views of the surrounding countryside. (01908 363411) www.storey-homes.co.uk Hunters Park is a stylish new development from Bovis Homes, in Cambourne, to the west of Cambridge. Hunters Park offers an appealing blend of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes. Smart coach houses to 5 bedroom family houses with flexible rooms, modern facilities and acres of beautifully landscaped open spaces and woodland makes this an attractive new community. The Ingleton Group have developed a substantial bespoke property in the historic walled gardens of Woolvestone Hall, in a beautiful part of Suffolk. Alongside this, there is a small development of nine cottages on land adjacent to the Walled Garden, offering properties ranging from 2 to 4 bedrooms, starting at £265,000 (off plan). (01206 321987) www.ingleton-group.co.uk
Stowmarket-based property developers, Laurence Homes, provides new homes of exceptional style set in the outstanding countryside of mid-Suffolk. Chilton Fields, on the outskirts of Stowmarket, is an imaginative concept of new houses and apartments with breathtaking country views. The Meadows is an exclusive development of luxuriously appointed properties in Debenham, comprising three, four and five bedroomed semi and detached houses. Tudor Park, in the village of Elmswell, has 24 homes, in a well balanced mix of 2, 3, and 4 bedroom houses, bungalows and chalet bungalows. (01449 771177) www.laurencehomes.co.uk
Hopkins Homes is a privately owned company at the very forefront of residential development in East Anglia, creating beautifully designed homes of character, style and substance. Two new developments have recently been launched; Bell’s Grange a select development of just 18 high specification properties in the historic market town of Bocking in Essex and Scholars’ Quarter; a highly contemporary development at the very heart of Norwich. Elsewhere, the company are currently developing in Aylsham, Costessey and Mulbarton in Norfolk, Halesworth, Harleston, Ipswich, Southwold and Walsham le Willows in Suffolk, Lawford in Essex and Soham in Cambridgeshire. Plans for 2011 see the launch of a further seven new sites, each carefully considered to cater for all market segments whilst ensuring that each individual property built is finished to an exceptionally high standard. Not one to rest on its laurels, the company remains very ambitious for the future and has embarked on a programme of significant land acquisition, carefully selecting locations that will allow it to further enhance its outstanding reputation for providing well planned homes and creating desirable communities whilst at the same time continuing to expand its horizons, moving further into Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The best investment you will possibly ever make is a phone call away Whether it’s paying for food, university, car repairs, or the latest phone bill, it’s a fact that the majority of us have concerns about money. But what if there was a way to substantially reduce one of your major household bills and actually earn money at the same time? Sounds too good to be true perhaps, just another of those recorded message phone calls that end up in some sort of scam? I would have said the same until I went along to get the truth out of local business man Paul Shiels who is co-founder of a Biggleswade based company known as G.R.E.E.N Ltd ‘The Government is very worried about carbon emissions and has stated it will attempt to reduce the country’s output by 80% over the next forty years.’ explains Paul ‘One way of doing this is by providing energy from alternative sources – wind, hydro and solar power.’ ‘G.R.E.E.N Ltd, via the MCS (Micro-generation scheme), are Government approved designers and installers for PV solar energy panels – simple, roof fitted, sets of photovoltaic cells that harness the power of the sun and put that renewable energy to work in your home. ‘The sun is an amazing source of energy. Enough sunlight falls on the earth every minute to meet the world’s energy demands for an entire year. At the moment every individual has the right to collect and use that energy for our homes and as of April 2010, thanks to a new Government scheme from the DECC called the Feed-in tariff, everybody who invests in the environment and the future in this way can make a healthy profit from it too. ‘It’s still a little known fact, but the FIT is a twenty-five year, index linked, tax free scheme which pays 41.3p per unit as well as offering free electricity for the household each year. This equates to earnings of more than £1,400 per year (for a 4KW system) or £52,000 for the full 25 years, as well as significant savings on your personal electricity bill – a massive 12% annual return on investment – truly enormous compared with the average interest rates on savings or investments.’ G.R.E.E.N Ltd is a small, local, friendly company who really know what they are talking about. ‘The average system that we install saves up to 40 tons of CO2 emissions over
the 25 years – that’s the same weight as 25 Ford Mondeo cars. Choosing this sort of renewable energy really makes a difference.’ enthuses Paul. The company have invested heavily in this sector and will within the next month be opening the first Solar PV specific showroom in Biggleswade. Customers can view panels, inverters, get a greater understanding of how the systems work and view a small roof display highlighting how the panels are fitted to the roof. Additionally, experienced sales people will be on hand offering advice on a whole range of issues relating to Solar PV. Without professional advice choosing the right system for your home and lifestyle can be complicated and in
order to benefit from the FIT scheme the installers must be Government approved. Anyone interested in making money and lessening their carbon footprint can come along and view the systems for themselves and receive all the specialist advice and support that they need.’ So for down-to-earth, helpful advice as well as the all-round benefits of a lower cost of living, earning more through your home and a clear conscience that comes from taking substantial steps towards a healthier environment,
contact G.R.E.E.N Ltd. Paul ended by adding: ‘The Government’s recent cost cutting exercises had originally identified the FIT as a possible source of budget reduction. It’s a huge bonus to all involved in the solar industry and ultimately all future potential customers that, upon review, the consensus was to leave the FIT alone and free from reduction. The Government’s support of this 25 year scheme is paramount and once again by leaving it alone they have reaffirmed their support of it.’

L VE | Valentine’s Day
Celebrate Valentines in style! Tarnia Robertson, Marketing Director at Best Western Ufford Park Hotel, near Woodbridge in Suffolk, says: “We have been trading for the last 17 years and every year we sell more tables - on the back of last year. This year we will have a Dinner Dance with a Michael Buble Tribute act in our largest function suite, and a romantic meal in our restaurant both on the Saturday and on Monday 14th February! Why not relive a scene from one of the most romantic films ever made. The award-winning Brief Encounter restaurant at Wymondham Station in Norfolk pays homage to the classic 1946 film directed by David Lean and starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. There are wonderful displays of railwayana, potted palms and a piano. FEAST
SARAH EDDISON TALKS CANAPES, CAKES AND CROWNS WITH DEBORAH AND KEVIN STEWARD
W
hen not catering for Her Majesty the Queen and her guests at various events at Sandringham House, and overseeing the Café, tearoom and coffee shop for visitors to Sandringham, Deborah Steward Catering make simply delicious food for dinner parties, birthday parties, christenings, weddings and shooting lunches. Based at Houghton St.Giles near Walsingham, in North Norfolk, they can provide the complete dining service with a chef and waiting staff for a dinner party, organise a marquee for several hundred, and even set up a ‘field kitchen’ on site. Deborah heads up the food; planning menus, prepping, and overseeing her ‘great team’ of loyal staff, and Kevin is, as he says, “Front of House, and very much head of ‘logistics’,” a somewhat daunting task when you are catering for up to 700 guests at one time, like they did last summer for the Mermaid Ball, at Burnham Overy Staithe in North Norfolk, which raised

huge funds for Wells Community Hospital. Deborah and Kevin love the variety of their work, “It keeps it interesting,” says Deborah, with summer being busy with weddings, parties and charity events, and winter more likely to be drinks parties and smaller dinners. “If it was back to back weddings we would soon be on our knees, the diversity keeps us fresh, we`re like butterflies; we flit all over the place!”. Having worked for the Royal Family at Sandringham for over 7 years, they were thrilled in December 2009 to be granted a Royal Warrant for Event Catering and Management,
a great honour. (They are also thrilled about the impending Royal wedding!) “Our Royal Warrant a bit like a Michelin Star for us”, says Kevin, “as unlike restaurants and hotels, outside caterers don’t have a star grading so to speak, and it was lovely that so many people said that we deserved it.” Deborah admits that although she and Kevin are the ‘figureheads’ of the business, it is all those who work for them that deserve praise as well. “We are very aware that they give up their weekends and evenings to work for us and we couldn’t do our job without them, we are very much a team, so it’s good to have been recognised.
Deborah’s hot picks for Canapes this year Tiny choux puffs filled with Norfolk crab mousse Warm quails egg and mushroom tartlets Mini chipolatas glazed with Walsingham honey and whole grain mustard Seared beef skewers with warm Binham Blue cheese dip Baby smoked haddock fishcakes with caper and parsley crème fraiche Sweet red onion and thyme tatins Pea, pear and Wighton cheese crostini Filo baskets filled with pink duck breast, watercress and apple jelly. Gravadlax with horseradish cream on granary croutes. Chicken liver parfait on tiny walnut scones with pickled walnuts. www.eastmag.com
The warrant is an accreditation of quality.” Deborah and Kevin are keen to champion local food, taking advantage of all the lovely fish, meat, fruit and vegetables that Norfolk has to offer. Their meat comes from Graves Butchers, fish from Coles in Kings Lynn, vegetables from McArthys, and soft fruit from Sharrington. Deborah’s father also has his own allotment in Fakenham, and so they get the pick of the crop from there, as well as trout from his fishing trips down by the river. They make all their own bread, as well as yummy pickles, chutneys and jellies. They are

allowed to use the apples etc. from Sandringham estate, and you can buy their medlar jelly, rosehip jelly, elderflower cordial and a rather special hot red onion relish at the café at Sandringham Estate. The day I visited Deborah’s kitchens, she was surrounded by crates of quince and walnuts - all ready to be turned into jelly - the nuts to be roasted for cakes. “In the autumn and winter we make good use of our time, and deal with gluts of fruit, like quinces, and each year we usually make 400 jars of marmalade.” Obviously many of my questions about their catering at Sandringham went unanswered
- or at least I am not allowed to divulge them here! Protocol and discretion being the key. But Deborah and Kevin are keen to point out that they cater for many different kinds of people, and many different occasions. All as are important as each other. They love cooking for a small intimate dinner party in someone’s home, as well as large weddings or birthday celebrations: “Ten or a hundred guests, we don’t differentiate.” They have also had great fun as well working to a ‘theme’; and to date have notched up an ‘Italian’ wedding, where 50% of the guests were Italian, an Indian banquet, a Moroccan buffet complete with meze and
Deborah’s (fantasy) Royal Wedding Breakfast for Prince William & Kate Middleton Potted home smoked trout and brown shrimps, with crisp green leaves and warm granary rolls. Roast rack of Sandringham Lamb glazed with home-made Medlar and rosemary jelly. Steamed new potatoes with mint butter Lemon glazed baby carrots Gooseberry and elderfower fool with vanilla shortbread biscuits
flatbreads, and a ‘Big Fat Greek’ wedding . I have to say that their food looks divine as well as tasting absolutely delicious, they organise everything with military precision, which is after all why you pay someone to do all the hard work. Deborah certainly knows her stuff, combining the best use of trends and creativity, whilst never losing sight on what produce is available locally and how is all tastes, which after all is the most important bit. So all I need now is a good reason to give a party! And the best bit about their work? What Deborah and Kevin both acknowledge, is that they are privileged to be celebrating peoples ‘high’ days. LIVE | Weddings Hair, make-up, nails.... being happy with the way you look will relax you and give you confidence on your big day. Lucy Corry talks to some beauty experts to help you achieve the look you want...
Making up is hard to do In general terms, the style of your dress and the overall theme of your wedding should influence your make-up. There’s no need to go overboard with dramatic changes - you don’t want the assembled guests or your groom to be staring at you for all the wrong reasons! “Steer clear of frosted make-up, which creases and looks shiny ...wearing the most garish shade of in pictures,” Bobbi advises. “Don’t wear lipsticks that blue eyeshadow seen this side of are too pale - they look 1986. Every bride wants to look her washed out in photobest on her wedding day, but some graphs. Dark lip liner is too harsh, so opt for get so excited by the prospect that natural tones.” they slap on more powder and paint Waterproof and than a panto dame. long-wearing formuMake-up guru Bobbi Brown says it’s las will help your eye make-up last, while important that you don’t get carried face powder will away. “On your wedding day you ensure your foundashould look like yourself at your most tion and concealer beautiful,” she says. “My biggest tip stay put. If you are inexperifor wedding day beauty is to stay enced when it comes to away from anything trendy because make-up or suspect you trends come and go. Fresh, pretty, will be too fraught to DIY on the day, consider getting and simple makeup is classic and a trusted friend or a profestimeless and you’ll enjoy looking

With that sparkling new ring on your finger it’s extra important that your hands and nails look their best. There’s no need to go all out with gem-encrusted extensions (unless you really want to) - but well-cared for hands will make a real difference to your total look. For an intensive hand treatment, slather a thick layer of hand cream all over your hands, and wear thin plastic gloves over them. After 10 minutes, remove and massage your hands. The gloves help to raise your skin temperature, opening up the pores and helping the cream to be more fully absorbed. Give your fingers a quick massage with a rich hand cream every day. Not only will this protect your hands, it will also be de-stressing. To refine the fingers, massage from the tip towards the palm, or to stimulate circulation, massage the nail and cuticle. Apply hand cream to clean dry hands, working from the tips of the fingers to the wrists, concentrating on the cuticles. Treat yourself to a professional manicure a month before the wedding, then take the chance for some more pampering the day before. By then you’ll relish the chance to sit still for an hour and not do anything!
It’s important to think about your hair as soon as you’ve set a date. Again, it’s a mistake to adopt a radically different do for the big day - think about your dress and the general ‘feel’ of your wedding before ploughing ahead with any dramatic decisions. Celebrity hairdresser Charles Worthington has some sound advice: “Don’t be tempted to go for a radical re-style - it’s you he has asked to marry and it’s you he wants to see at the altar,” he says. Whatever kind of wedding you are planning, Charles says it’s essential that your dress and hairstyle work together. “A low scooping neckline can look wonderfully romantic with loose tendrils of hair, whereas a chic bob with a sleek slash neck is exceptionally elegant,” he says. “If you have a low back on your dress, you can draw attention to this feature by wearing your hair swept up and away from your neck.” Talk to your usual hairdresser or visit a few salons until you find someone you feel comfortable with. Talk through your ideas and be honest - it’s your wedding and your hair. “Don’t get an attack of ‘wedding ringlets’,” Charles says. “If your style is simple. don’t let others bully you into a look you don’t feel comfortable with just because they perceive it as being more glamorous.” If you’re worried, book a rehearsal session before the wedding to make sure you’re both happy with the outcome. Your hairdresser should also be able to advise you on making sure your hair is in tip-top condition before the big day.
From Hair to Eternity

Nailing it While good skincare, a healthy diet and plenty of rest will help ensure your have a headstart to looking good on your wedding day, Bobbi says there’s no need to panic if you wake up with a pimple. “To cover a blemish, start by applying foundation stick to the area using a concealer brush,” she says. “Gently blend the foundation with the pad of your finger - be sure not to rub, as you’ll just rub everything off. Then, set the foundation with sheer loose powder and a velour puff.” Lastly, don’t forget to ask your mum or a bridesmaid to carry a touch-up kit with concealer, pressed powder, lipstick or gloss and lip liner, plus tissues, mints, and a mini sewing kit (for emergency clothing fixes like a dropped hem or popped button).
The finishing touch... Estee Lauder have a gorgeous fragrance designed to capture the romance of weddings. Beautiful Love, (£65 for 100ml) is a romantic perfume with lush magnolia blossom, rich white jasmine, mango, heliotrope and vetiver. EXPLORE | Cambridgeshire Peterborough’s Broadway Theatre this month reopens its doors after being closed for over year following a devastating fire in 2009. It is now part of the StageLive family, the UK’s newest theatrical venue owner and operator who will present the very best in live entertainment at the newly restored venue. The Broadway Theatre originally opened as the Odeon Cinema in 1937, until it showed its last film in 1991. Following an £8million investment it reopened as a theatre in 2001. There’s a range of top shows lined up including the musicals Blood Brothers, Annie, and Joseph, plus stars such as Neil Morrisey, Jack Jones, Des O’Connor, Jim Davidson and Jane McDonald. This month enjoy the West End show An Evening of Burlesque (pictured), singer Steve Harley and Rick Wakeman, along with a great tribute show, Elvis On Tour. For tickets call the box office on 0844 8500 850 or go to www.thebroadwaytheatre.co.uk
For more great places to enjoy an evening of Burlesque, see page 114 The popular BBC2 antiques programme, Flog It!, presented by Paul Martin, will be at Peterborough Cathedral on 25 February. The Cathedral will be hosting the Valuation Day. Rather like a treasure hunt, members of the public are invited to bring along the antiques and collectables they might be interested in selling. Once valued, the owner and team of experts decide whether it should go forward for auction. If the item is chosen to be filmed, it is sold a few weeks later – often with the owner making a tidy sum. The resulting programme will be broadcast later in the year. Admission to the Valuation day is free, and everyone who goes along will receive a valuation – even if their antiques are not chosen to go forward for auction. 9.30am-4pm. The auction will take place at Batemans Auctioneers & Valuers, The Saleroom, Ryhall Road, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 1XF on 2 April. www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk 78

2011 is an historic year for Snetterton circuit, marking both its 60th anniversary as a motorsport venue and the launch of its new ‘300’ circuit layout in the Spring. To celebrate, circuit owner MotorSport Vision (MSV) has revealed a busy calendar of two and four wheel race meetings, including hosting four of the UK’s leading national championships. The racetrack, nr Attleborough, is currently undergoing a multimillion pound redevelopment to create a new 2.99 mile multi-configuration circuit, and a quartet of championships have confirmed that they will race on the longest configuration, the 300, in 2011. The first event is a double headline encounter from the British F3 and GT Championships in May, bringing together an exciting combination of multi million supercars and rising single seater stars. This will be followed by the UK’s most popular car racing series, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, in August. Two wheel fans can receive their motorsport fix when the riders of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, the UK’s premier domestic bike championship, tackle the 300 layout for the first time in July. Another event that will make its 300 circuit debut in 2011 is the Lotus Festival, featuring racing and demonstrations from modern and classic Lotus machinery. “It’s an important year for Snetterton,” says Jamie Hopper, Snetterton Circuit Manager, “and we’re particularly excited about the launch of our new 300 circuit, which will provide new challenges for drivers and increased excitement and viewing opportunities for spectators.” To find out more about Snetterton and to purchase event tickets and season passes call 0843 453 1000 or visit www.snetterton.co.uk
You simply mustn’t visit Norwich without trying some Caley’s chocolate. Caleys have made chocolate since 1883. The company’s founder, Albert Jarman Caley commenced the production of chocolate products at his Fleur de Lys works in the heart of Norwich, and laid the foundations for their reputation as one of the world’s top chocolate makers. Such was the quality and demand for their products that Royal Warrants were granted for many of them, including the famous Marching Chocolate, a familiar product in British troops’ kit bags during the Great War. Caley’s chocolate products can be bought in supermarkets such as Tesco and Waitrose, but for the real deal, you must visit Caley's Cocoa Cafe at the 15th century Norwich Guildhall. Situated beside the historic market, and in the shadow of the city hall, Caley's Cocoa Cafe is located in the old Court of Record, a very fine example of an early Georgian Courtroom with the Judge's seat being set in the centre of a gentle curve of benches and adorned with Corinthian Columns. As you indulge in being served beverages and snacks at your table, you can enjoy the ambience of the Grade 1 listed building and also be able to purchase a selection of chocolate confections and a variety of Caley branded memorabilia and keepsakes. www.caleys.com

The Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn dates back to the 12th century and beyond when it was one of England’s most important ports. The town’s rich past has left a magnificent heritage of buildings and stories to be discovered. King’s Lynn is Britain’s first member of The Hanse League (Die Hanse), an active network of towns and cities across Europe, which historically belonged to the association of merchant towns known as the Hanseatic League. The original mediaeval Hanseatic League, which comprised a group of towns around the Baltic and the North Sea, including several on the east coast of England, was an extremely influential trading association and was very much a part of King’s Lynn’s development and historic past. The Hanse works to encourage and increase contact between its member cities, promoting cross border co-operation and making a contribution to the economic, cultural and social life in Europe. Greyfriars Tower is the last significant remaining part of a friary established in the 1230s by a group of Franciscan Friars. Of the 60 Franciscan friaries that existed in England prior to the suppression in 1538, significant remains of only 16 exist. Greyfriars Tower is one of only 3 remaining in the country, and is the most attractive and complete. The tower is a key landmark in King's Lynn and it owes its survival to this as, for centuries, it proved useful as a seamark for traders and sailors navigating the difficult waters of The Wash.

EXPLORE | Herts & Beds
One of the jewels of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Pegsdon Hills offers some of the best views in the county. The steep chalk hills and quiet valleys are full of wildlife, from magnificent displays of orchids and butterflies, to nesting lapwings and circling buzzards. Most of the area is managed as a nature reserve by the Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs & Northants, including the neighbouring Hoo Bit. The Pegsdon Hills provide extensive walking on rough grassland with few marked paths and although some parts are very steep and hard going underfoot, you will be rewarded with those excellent views. www.wildlifebcnp.org
Set in 250 acres of rolling Hertfordshire countryside, Knebworth House is one of England's most colourful stately homes. It is remarkable for having been in the same family - the Lyttons - for more than 500 years and for its romantic exterior complete with turrets, domes and gargoyles, which conceals a red brick house dating from Tudor times. Knebworth achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Edward Bulwer Lytton - author of the words “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Knebworth is also famous for its rock concerts. Since their inception in 1974, over 100 major artists have played Knebworth festivals, including The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Oasis, and Robbie Williams. The house and park reopens to visitors in March, when you can also enjoy the Gardens, Dinosaur Trail and Adventure Playground. Knebworth hosts a number of events throughout the summer, including the The East of England Food Festival, The Knebworth Country Show, Salvo Fair and Medieval Jousting. The Sonisphere rock festival is held in July, headlined this year by Metallica and Motorhead. www.knebworthhouse.com (01438 812661)

OUT | Spotlight The Essex singer songwriter is making big waves on the music scene and is a BBC Radio 2 favourite. She’s also an ambassador for Quicksilver Woman clothing range and this month embarks a nationwide tour ahead of her second album release.
LEDDRA CHAPMAN When did you first realise that you wanted music to be a big part of your life? Well, I have always loved singing from a very early age, but the moment I actually realised it was what I wanted to spend most of my life doing was when I picked up the guitar for the first time and started writing my own material. Then after my first public performance at 14 I knew I could never get that much of a high from anything else! It felt amazing!
sitting on a train or on a long car journey! I have to jot down all the lyric ideas I have in my head on my phone until I’m in next the studio!
How has the London College of Music experience been for you? My college course has helped me so much; it has enabled me to grow as a singer and a live performer. I met my band members there and my teachers are very inspiring. I feel like I am now at a comfortable stage in my musical development where I feel very confident performing in front of large audiences, but I am always striving to be a better musician. In my opinion the musical development never stops, I’m always practicing and looking for ways to get even better as a guitarist, singer and writer.
BBC Radio 2 are big fans of your music. What does that mean to you? The Radio 2 support has been incredible, and I still jump when I hear myself in the car or in supermarkets haha! It’s overwhelming! I’m incredibly proud of Telling Tales, every song on the album means a lot to me. I’m very excited about album number two! There are some really fun, feel-good tracks and every song is based on my own experiences.
How would you describe your music? I always find this question tough... but I like to describe it as story-telling, quirky folk pop. My lyrics are very honest and I rarely hold back anything when writing, it’s very important to me to write from the heart. Where does your inspiration come from? My inspiration varies from my own experiences to my friends or families’ experiences, books, films, different cities... my strongest songs always occur when I least expect it; like 96
What are the most listened to songs on your iPod? A Case Of You by Joni Mitchell. It’s my favourite song of all time! She is one of my heroes along with Alanis Morissette and Regina Spektor.
You grew up in Essex. What are your memories of the county? I still live in Essex just outside East London...when I’m not crashing at friend’s houses for my university course, haha! I’m very proud of where I grew up, and I always miss home a lot when I’m traveling. What are your favourite Essex venues? My favourite venue in Essex has to be the High Barn; I have played there since I was 15! It was amazing to be back there last year doing my own headline show and selling the place out! I can’t wait to go back, I’m playing there on the 5th February. I also have very fond memories of my first few gigs at the www.eastmag.com
Queens Theatre in Hornchurch and the Hermit Club in Brentwood. Where are your favourite places in Essex? One of my favourite spots in Essex is Wield Park in Brentwood, it’s so beautiful - I’ve been going there since I was little. One of my favourite pubs is the Black Horse, also near Brentwood - it’s a typical quaint English pub with amazing food! Aldo, being an Essex girl I obviously love a bit of shopping at lakeside! Haha! What do you love most about touring? Touring is the best part of my job! I literally adore it so so much! The things I love the most about touring are firstly meeting the fans of my music (the Leddys..hehe!), and also I love being on the road with my band and traveling to different cities and having great fun on stage!! If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be? I would love to collaborate with an artist or band that are very different to my style of music... I’d like to be able to rock out a bit on stage... Matt Bellamy from Muse would be amazing! I adore that band. What would be your dream come true? To be able to keep making and performing music for the rest of my life!! And to tour with Joni Mitchell haha!
Leddra is appearing at High Barn, Great Bardfield with Ben Montague on 5 Feb. Call 01371 811291 for tickets. Her latest single Edie is available on iTunes. www.leddrachapman.com

Antiques Worth its weight in By Judith Miller
GLASS
Despite the wealth and fame that paperweights brought to the French town of Baccarat, they were originally produced there for only around 15 years, between 1845-1860. This short period saw the status of the paperweight raised from functional object to decorative item, without which no desk was complete. Baccarat paperweights typically feature scattered or close-packed millefiori canes - the word comes from the Italian meaning “a thousand flowers”. The town’s glassworkers became highly skilled in forming thelong cylinders of coloured glass from which the canes were cut. Early Baccarat weights can often be identified from signature and date canes that were sometimes included amid the millefiori decoration. Other decorative specialities included the intricate depiction of flowers, such as anemones or other motifs in coloured glass. The ‘Gridel’ silhouette,
unique to Baccarat paperweights, is another distinctive feature. These tiny animal forms were named after a young boy whose paper cut-outs inspired his uncle, a Baccarat executive, to try something similar in glass. The production of Baccarat paperweights was resumed from the mid-1950s, but most collectors find the original 19th century pieces far more desirable. Prices start at around GBP400 but amounts topping GBP5,000 are paid for older examples with especially tightly packed millefiori canes, or particularly desirable Gridel silhouettes such as the swan on an aqua blue ‘water’ cane. Outsize weights are also popular, from the large ‘magnum’ size to miniature models. Glass sales such as those held at Lyon & Turnbull will often include paperweights.

This display of new machines and amusements continues today with the showmen vying to display the latest amusments. In 1897 Randall Williams became the first showman to display moving pictures to the fairgoing public at the Valentine Day fair. By the following year four cinematograph booths were on display. Dragons have been a heraldic symbol closely associated with the city of Norwich since the Middle Ages and today dragons are still visible across the city's architecture and feature in many city celebrations. The Festival will be a great opportunity for local people and visitors alike to learn more about the city's history and its myths and legends in a range of talks and exhibitions; get stuck into some great, fun hands-on activities; develop arts and craft skills in a series of workshops; be dazzled by a programme of puppet shows, story-telling, films and dance performances; and be inspired by a range of artwork and displays created by community groups and local artists. Venues include Norwich Castle, Dragon Hall, Norwich Playhouse, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich Puppet Theatre, both Cathedrals, the Assembly House and the University of East Anglia, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
