A Saintly Affair

A

lban Weekend is on the 21 & 22 June and gives you the opportunity to find out more about St Alban the man himself and to get to know the beautiful city of St Albans through the exciting events taking place over the two days. On Saturday 21 June St Albans Cathedral is delighted to bring you the spectacular Alban Pilgrimage, a celebration of the life of Saint Alban who gave the City its name. This event sees giant carnival puppets retrace Alban’s last steps and tell his remarkable and moving story. Roman chariots, centurions, lions, roses and executioners all take their place in the procession from St Peter’s Church at 11am and proceed through the City Centre to St Albans Cathedral. Alban’s story takes us back to the beginning of the Christian faith in Britain, but it remains fresh and inspiring for us today. Over 1700 years ago, Alban was executed for giving shelter to a Christian priest fleeing persecution by the

Romans. Moved by the priest’s faith, Alban became a Christian and the two men swapped cloaks, enabling the priest to escape. Alban was arrested instead, brought to trial and beheaded on the hill where St Albans Cathedral now stands. For further information on the Pilgrimage visit www.stalbanscathedral.org Also on the Saturday 21 June St Albans Folk Festival will feature free events during the day in the Old Court Room and sing-a-rounds in the cells, along with music in the White Swan, Upper Dagnall Street. The Day of Dance will also feature in the City Centre during the day. The Festival Concert takes place in the evening in the Old Town Hall, featuring Jim Moray, Haddo and Emma Scarr, winner of Watford Folk Club songwriting competition. To celebrate St Alban’s Day, the City will come alive on Sunday 22 June with the Alban Street Festival offering fabulous street entertainment,

he Elstree Project is now in its fourth year and has recorded over 50 interviews with film workers ranging from director Steven Spielberg to actors and crew members - everyone’s role and story important. The project team of local volunteers and students from the University of Hertfordshire have discovered tales about what it was really like to work with Roger Moore on The Saint, how the backcloths were matted for Ivanhoe and what Elizabeth Taylor said when one of the crew on The VIPs suggested her engagement ring was from Woolworths! To hear and see these authentic voices from the studios visit www. TheElstreeProject.org or drop in to the display in the Museum.

I

f you head to the old MGM site you will find a plaque that lists about 35 people who have been honoured by having a local road named after them. These road names acknowledge people who helped create our unique film and TV heritage while others celebrate some of the UK’s famous film studios. If you cannot visit the site you can still pick up a flyer telling you about these people and the roads named after them from the Museum at 96 Shenley Road.

One Hundred but Not Out!

W

hen the early film pioneers arrived in a small rural village called Boreham Wood in the parish of Elstree one hundred years ago, who could have imagined that films and TV would still be being created in the town here today? Borehamwood and Elstree are celebrating a century of film-making and television production throughout 2014. Various events and activities are planned over the next few months, including a concert on 21 June from the BBC Elstree Concert Band featuring music from films and TV productions. Look out for the new centenary banners flying from the lighting columns which lead you from the railway station down past the BBC Elstree Centre and on to

experience to Elstree Studios. Check out the Centenary Exhibition in the museum at 96 Shenley Road, or pick up your free Film and TV Heritage Trail leaflet and follow in the footsteps of the stars. There are over 20 panels located in the High Street to tell you about the stars and directors who all helped contribute to the fantastic legacy of film and TV production in the town. New gateway signs into the town will reflect its unique heritage, and look out for Made at Elstree film and TV screenings later in the year. Today Elstree is still a leading London studio; film stars like Brad Pitt and Simon Pegg and pop stars such as One Direction come through the studio gates. Elstree also produces high-rating TV shows: Pointless, Strictly Come Dancing, Big Brother and Dancing on Ice. The studio remains busier than ever and is looking forward to the next 100 years of film and TV production in Hertfordshire. GM British stood in 115 acres off Elstree Way from 1936 until 1970, and for over three decades produced world-famous films, attracting Hollywood’s most legendary stars. The 1950s saw Clark Gable, Grace Kelly, Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor filming at MGM. When it needed a castle for Ivanhoe and later a Chinese village for The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, being part of “Britain’s Hollywood” MGM built them! The Sixties were just as busy; when filming the Dirty Dozen, night time backlot explosions kept local residents awake. MGM also played host to Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey and Where Eagles Dare with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

E

lstree Confidential written by Paul Welsh MBE, recounts 50 years of star encounters and film set visits at the various studios of Borehamwood. It contains nearly 200 pages of anecdotes and is lavishly illustrated with almost 300 previously unpublished photos and letters from such stars as Liz Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Ronald Reagan. P

anshanger Aerodrome in Welwyn Garden City is one of the remaining historic aerodromes in the UK. During WW2 it acted as a decoy aerodrome. Created by film experts it was complete with dummy aircraft, cars, smoking chimneys and deliberate blackout leaks. These measures were taken to divert German pilots away from the real Hatfield airbase. It was so successful our own fighter pilots sometimes landed here by mistake! Today it is home to the North London Flying Club who offer flying lessons and pilot training. They have a great Out of the Box cafe which is for members only, but you can join for a one off small subscription, which gives you 10% off all food & drinks in the cafe and invitations to the regular events at the aerodrome including the annual Vintage Flying Day in August & aerobatic displays.
