introduction
Enjoy! Welcome to the latest edition of Enjoy! Hertfordshire magazine. Well what an amazing summer of sport and festivals we have had in our beautiful county this year. As host county to the Canoe Slalom events we were priveliged to see Olympic history in the making at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Broxbourne, where Team GB won not only a gold but a silver medal. Just weeks after those medals being won the White Water Centre is open again to the public. Tickets for the white rafting experience are up for grabs alongside Afternoon Tea at the Mercure Letchworth Hall Hotel in our competitions, so do enter, you may just be one of our lucky winners. Inside you can read about our farmers’ markets, Letchworth Garden City - the first Garden City, the places where you can be pampered during the winter months and much, much more.
If you are looking for a special gift for someone, do try to shop local and support the many independent shops in our market towns as they really do have a lot to offer. You may want to treat family and friends with tickets to a show, so don’t forget to check out what is on offer in Herts as you can often see a show before it hits the West End. Wherever you go and whatever you decide to do, you will receive a warm welcome in Hertfordshire and I am sure you will want to return again. Enjoy! Tim Hutchings

Lots of fun for all the family you can learn canoeing, sailing, climbing and caving all at one superb location. If you want to make a weekend of it check in at the nearby Youth Hostel and make yourself at home in one of the six Scandinavian style lodges, complete with ensuite twin, double and family rooms. Alternatively pitch your tent, park your caravan or get cosy in a family cabin at one of the three family-friendly campsites. Instead of using golf clubs to putt balls into holes, in Disc Golf you throw specially designed discs into baskets. Whoever completes the course with the least number of throws is the winner. The ‘nine’ hole course is near Pindar car park and discs can be bought nearby at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.

The Garden City Greenway is a 13.6 miles countryside circular trail around the edge of Letchworth Garden City; you are never far from the town. Ideal for a family walk, there are picnic areas and barbecue facilities along the route. Norton Pond is a good place to rest. With patience, a whole host of wildlife can be seen here including dragonflies, damselflies, water beetles, three-spined sticklebacks, common frog, common toad, water boatman, pond snails, pond skaters and crustaceans. Norton Pond is situated next to the entrance to Croft Lane near Norton village. Look on www.greenway.com The Garden City Museum is holding an exhibition on the Spirella Company, Corsets & Corsetieres. The company motto was ‘Healthy, happy workers are the world’s best’. The exhibition is packed full of objects and ephemera and explores the history of the iconic Spirella Building, the company, the corsets it made and, of course, the lives of some of those ‘happy workers.’ It is open Mon to Sat, 10am to 5pm and runs until 23 February 2013. Look on www. gardencitymuseum.org for more information.
The Good life
W
ide tree-lined streets and distinctive early 20th century buildings mark Letchworth Garden City as somewhere special. It was here that Ebenezer Howard set up the world’s first Garden City in 1903. It attracted idealists and pioneers who wanted to combine the best of town and country and plough all the financial benefits into the community. The idea struck a chord and Letchworth flourished. Among the early investors was Spirella, the American corset company which built a ballroom for its staff, had a man to maintain their bikes and provided hot baths and dry clothes if it rained. The Spirella Ballroom is still used today as an extra special venue for weddings, conferences and parties. The Broadway Cinema is housed in the original unique art deco building which today showcases the latest blockbusters. The town has a formal central garden with a

fountain dominating the main approach to the town. Shoppers will find a range of individual shops, an Arts Centre, the museum and a fine selection of restaurants and cafes. The town was teetotal for many years but there are now plenty of licensed premises. www.letchworthgc.com If vintage and collectables are your favourites, come and explore the Wynd. It is a cornucopia of delights. Here you will find the fabulous GoGoSix which offers cool vintage clothing from the 40’s to the 60’s, alongside vintage jewellery, household goods and accessories. Stock often changes so look on www.gogosixvintage.co.uk Nearby Mackay’s Junk and Disorderly is home to an eclectic mix of antiques and collectables and is well worth a rummage, you may just discover a unique piece of furniture that you can give a good home to. They buy and sell so if you are looking for something specific give them a call on 01462 685050.

Letchworth Arts Centre in the town arcade has monthly jazz nights, sit back, relax and listen to some great live music. Tickets are just £5. The monthly Comedy Nights are just as popular. Tickets are £10 and can be booked on line www.letchwortharts.org In the village of Hexton a short drive from Letchworth Garden City, you will find Country Matters and the Lavender Tea Room. Based in the old Village Hall you will find an Aladdin’s cave of bric-a-brac and local crafts. An assortment of very fresh eggs are usually for sale, and you can often buy plants and flowers too, all sourced locally. After a mooch enjoy the atmosphere of the tea room with its homemade food. WELCOME TO WATFORD… FOR YOU We are proud to welcome you to our growing, prosperous town. With our diverse population we think everyone will feel at home
W
atford has activities and attractions to suit all tastes: historical sites, parks, museums, leisure centres and sporting events for the whole family. There’s a wide range of shopping and dining opportunities as well as theatres, cinemas, pubs, music venues and nightclubs for afterhours entertainment. Watford enjoys an enviable proximity to the UK’s transport network. Its location just inside the M25 at junctions19 and 20 and just off the M1 at junction 5 ensures it simply couldn’t be easier to get here. Access from the M40 can also be swift via junction 16 of the M25. Alternatively, Watford can be reached by tube on the Metropolitan Line and for destinations to the North or the South, via overground services into Watford Junction. Here is just a taster of what our town has to offer…
Shop til you drop! The Harlequin is Hertfordshire’s largest shopping centre. It opens seven days a week and has over 140 shops and restaurants under its roof including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Apple, Karen Millen, Primark, Disney Store, Lakeland and Zara, to name just a few.
Entertainment for all Fancy a night at the theatre? Watford can offer not one but two top venues sure to have a show to suit you. Watford Colosseum is home to some of the best live music and 36 Watford JL.indd 1

entertainment outside London with recent acts including One Direction, Level 42 and Jimmy Carr. A stone’s throw from the high street, Watford Palace offers a vast array of theatre, dance, films and more, and many of its productions have enjoyed critical acclaim. Christmas is on its way and Panto season at the Palace is a great family day out. The theatre is also now offering the chance to watch 3D screenings of films. If comedy’s your thing why not eat, drink, laugh and dance all under one roof at The Comedy Club at Oceana Watford? Featuring some of the country’s best comedians, it’s a great place to celebrate any occasion. After the comedy finishes you are then invited to continue you night with complimentary entrance to Oceana Watford, West London’s Premier Nightclub.
Eating out In harmony with its vibrant, bustling atmosphere, Watford has an abundance of restaurants to try. Choose from family favourites and popular chains like Nandos, Pizza Express, and Ask to a range of fantastic local independent restaurants. Watford is also close to seeing the completion of the ‘Met Quarter’- located in the town centre, opposite the southern entrance to The Harlequin. The Met Quarter will provide a fabulous choice of seven new restaurants and a coffee shop. The extended pavements allow the restaurants to offer al fresco dining, creating a lively café culture feel to this part of town. The new restaurants opening in the scheme are Zizzi, Wagamama, Carluccios, Chimichanga, Nando’s and Jimmy’s World Grill & Bar along with Costa Coffee taking over the listed Barclays Bank building on the corner. ■

Straddling the ancient River Colne and Grand Union Canal, the Aquadrome is 41 hectares of woodland, lakes and grassland. More than just a place for peaceful walks, the Aquadrome is one of the most wheelchair-accessible nature reserves in Britain. In fact, the whole of the nature reserve is perfect for disabled people - with customised sailing dinghies on the lake, secure ďŹ shing bays and accessible loos - as

experience well as tons of free parking. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the ‘Aqui’, as the local call it, is just as popular with cyclists and parents with pushchairs. Wander past Bury Lake and you’ll come across the popular Café in the Park, which is bustling with mums and toddlers on weekday afternoons all year round. Bury and Stockers Lakes were watering holes themselves - quite literally. Gravel extraction, which helped to build the original Wembley Stadium, was ended in the 1920s and rain and springs filled the remaining hollows naturally. Batchworth is now fed by the River Colne and, in turn, carries water on through to Bury Lake, which is close by. This place of industry has long since been reclaimed by Mother Nature. The 1.3 km trail will help you to get the best views of herons, kingfishers, swans and moorhens. In summer you’ll spot frogs,

The Rickmansworth Festival takes place on the third weekend of May every year at the Aquadrome. Celebrating canals, the community and the environment, the festival has been going for over twenty years and is the highlight of the town’s annual calendar and finale of Rickmansworth Week. The festival is a great family day out and with so much to do it is not to be missed. For more information on the festival look on www.rwt.org.uk Next to Bury Lake is Stockers Lake where there is a wildlife sanctuary managed by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The lake attracts an astonishing number of water birds and is one of the largest gravel pits in the Colne Valley. Wintering duck such as Shoveler and Golden Eye are common visitors. There are over sixty recorded species of breeding birds, including the Common Tern which breeds on specially constructed rafts in the lake. It also boasts the largest heronry in the county. Why not take a stroll and see how many different species of water birds you can spot? For more information on Stockers Lake look on www. hertswildlifetrust.org.uk
