Henry Moore lived for many years at Perry Green and there are two major exhibitions of his work in Herts over the summer months. Moore at Hatfield, where you can see his works set in the magnificent grounds of Hatfield House and Henry Moore: Plasters,which are on display in the Sheep Field Barn at the Henry Moore Foundation in Perry Green. In July we are only one year away from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Britain. The Lee Valley White Water Centre in Broxbourne is the host venue
for the London 2012 Olympic Canoe Slalom events and is already open in advance of the Games. You can enjoy adrenalin pumping white water rafting and canoeing at the newest and best venue of its type in the world. Enter our competition to win a rafting experience and you could be tackling the same wild rapids and obstacles international athletes will face in the London 2012 Games when they battle for gold. You may of course prefer to do something a bit more relaxing, a spa day at Sopwell House or afternoon tea at Hanbury Manor perhaps? In 1803 the world’s first commercial papermaking machine was installed and operated at Frogmore Mill, Hemel Hempstead. The beginning of paper's industrial revolution, paving the way for the world we know today - mass communication, universal education and worldwide knowledge. Happy in Hemel emel Hempstead will always be associated with the words ‘magic roundabout’ but the town offers a wizard experience in many ways. Close by you will find the lovely market town of Tring where the Natural History Museum is based. It is home to the Walter Rothschild collection of over 5000 specimens of animals and bugs in a unique Victorian setting. Walkers can enjoy themselves too, strolling through the Bulbourne Valley meadows and beside the Grand Union Canal at Boxmoor. SailAway here is something very romantic about a windmill. Once they were a feature of every village but now they are a rarity.The very sight of their distinctive struts and high sails still sends a shiver of excitement down many a spine. The windmill at Cromer is an imposing example, cutting the skyline in the heart of the countryside, between Walkern and Cottered. It has stood on an artificial mound for more than 300 years and survived all the elements could throw at it, including a gale that blew it over in 1860. It was lovingly rebuilt and went on working for the next 60 years.

explore But the days were numbered for grinding corn as it became unprofitable.The mill suffered a serious blow when it lost a sail in 1929 and the rest were removed for safety. Over the years its position became dire. By 1967 it was in such a desperate state that a group of enthusiasts banded together to save it from total dereliction.
Hitchin Museum is housed in a late Georgian House and highlights include the costume gallery showing 200 years of women's fashion and the Herts Yeomanry & Artillery gallery, with uniforms and medals, dating back to 1805. The gem of the collection is a reconstruction of a Victorian Chemist's Shop. One Year and Counting As a host county for the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, events are in place to celebrate that in July it is one year to go before the Games come to London. The White Water Canoe Slalom for the 2012 Games is taking place at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Broxbourne. On Saturday 23 July there will be 5 hours of live performance on stage in Waltham Cross, near the Eleanor Cross to celebrate that it is one year before the Games come to town. Show casing local talent, events start at 11am and it is free to attend, so head on down to Rock at the Cross! On Sunday 24 July, Ofest is once again being hosted by Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, come and have a go at 'beating the pro' and enjoy more entertainment throughout the afternoon, including the Animal Olympic Show. Special events Moore Than Meets the Eye
But admirers can also see Moore’s works in the grounds and woodlands of Hatfield House this summer, from April 23 until September 30. The special show will feature the largest collection of his sculptures ever shown in the grounds of an historic house. Moore himself loved to display his innovative work outside, where it seemed to change according to the seasons and setting. experience Sculpture at the Grove The Grove at Chandler’s Cross is hosting Sculpture at the Grove. It has one of the most beautiful 'galleries' in Britain. The estate is made up of 300 acres of trees, lawns and canals that change with the seasons. In the 18th century, when it was home to the Earls of Clarendon, George Stubbs would cycle from his house in Edgware to paint there. Butterfly World Project is aiming to be the biggest butterfly experience in the world. The focus for this season is to teach visitors about the lifecycle of the butterfly and its extraordinary fragility and how to grow butterfly attracting plants to encourage the return of native butterflies into our gardens. Come and see a truly unique event as giant carnival puppets retrace the last steps of St Alban and celebrate his remarkable story. Roman chariots, centurions, lions, roses and executioners all take their place in this spectacular procession of pageantry, as St Alban is led to his execution outside the Cathedral. The Alban Pilgrimage takes place on 18 June at 10.30am and starts in Roman Verulamium and finishes outside the Cathedral. www.stabanscathedral.org.uk The Roman Quest takes place after the Pilgrimage procession on 18 June and is an exciting array of hands on fun and games for all the family. he Cathedral at St Albans lies on the edge of the town centre, looking across stunning parkland. Here a visitor can make a choice - should they go down towards Roman Verulamium with its fascinating ruins, museum and lake or should they move back to the city and its myriad of attractions? First they should look in the cathedral itself, built to mark the site of the execution of the first English Christian martyr, St Alban. He died because he defied the Roman rulers by following the teachings of Jesus. Legend has it that as the executioner brought down his axe on Alban’s neck his eyes fell from his head. You will be pleased to hear that no such fate awaits the modern visitor. His remarkable story is celebrated on 18 June in the Alban Pilgrimage.

If you carry on down the hill, past the historic Fighting Cocks pub (rumoured to be the oldest hostelry in the country) you will reach the lake and Verulamium Museum, where you can pass a good few hours travelling back in time to the early days of Christ. The Romans loved St Albans and made it their third largest city in England. It was destroyed during Boudicca’s revolt but this only spurred the citizens to a greater renewal. You can still see clear signs of the Romans’ skill including the famous mosaic that once graced a suite of rooms in a large town house. At Verulamium’s award-winning museum there is a real sense of life all those long centuries ago.
Whilst in St Albans pick up the Samuel Ryder Trail leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Town Hall which is located in St Peter’s Street. St Albans Signal Box is another jewel in St Albans crown. It is a rare grade 2 listed signal box built in 1892. Used for many years as a nesting box by the local pigeons it has been completely renovated by a group of volunteers. It is constructed entirely of wood and has a rare 1906 Midland Railway 'tumbler' interlocking lever frame. It has regular open days and is reliant on donations to maintain the building.
