Henry Moore lived for many years at Perry Green and there are two major exhibitions of his work in Herts over the summer months. Moore at Hatfield, where you can see his works set in the magnificent grounds of Hatfield House and Henry Moore: Plasters, which are on display in the Sheep Field Barn at the Henry Moore Foundation in Perry Green. In July we are only one year away from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Britain. The Lee Valley White Water Centre in Broxbourne is the host venue

for the London 2012 Olympic Canoe Slalom events and is already open in advance of the Games. You can enjoy adrenalin pumping white water rafting and canoeing at the newest and best venue of its type in the world. Enter our competition to win a rafting experience and you could be tackling the same wild rapids and obstacles international athletes will face in the London 2012 Games when they battle for gold. You may of course prefer to do something a bit more relaxing, a spa day at Sopwell House or afternoon tea at Hanbury Manor perhaps? Whatever you decide to do, wherever you decide to go, you will receive a warm welcome. Enjoy your stay and come and see us again very soon,

In 1803 the world’s first commercial papermaking machine was installed and operated at Frogmore Mill, Hemel Hempstead. The beginning of paper's industrial revolution, paving the way for the world we know today - mass communication, universal education and worldwide knowledge. Over 200 years later and still making paper, Frogmore Mill is now operated by the Apsley Paper Trail charity ensuring that its unique history and industry is preserved for the nation. Frogmore Mill offers a unique 'hands-on' visitor experience where you can make your own piece of paper, print a page, create paper arts, crafts and objects as well as seeing commercial paper being made by hand and on a 100 year old paper machine. Enjoy guided tours, exhibitions about the history of paper and papermaking, a café and, of course, the paper mill shop. Look on: www.thepapertrail.org.uk for more information.

Happy in Hemel emel Hempstead will always be associated with the words ‘magic roundabout’ but the town offers a wizard experience in many ways. Bargain hunters should find all they crave in the town, with two dedicated shopping centres providing the benefits of chain stores while more individual goods are on offer in the Old Town. The historic High Street is so picturesque that it has been filmed on several occasions including for the quirky detective series Pie in the Sky. It features architecture stretching back centuries.Wallpaper in the Old Bell pub dates from 1821 and has been conserved by experts at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

SailAway here is something very romantic about a windmill. Once they were a feature of every village but now they are a rarity. The very sight of their distinctive struts and high sails still sends a shiver of excitement down many a spine. The windmill at Cromer is an imposing example, cutting the skyline in the heart of the countryside, between Walkern and Cottered. It has stood on an artificial mound for more than 300 years and survived all the elements could throw at it, including a gale that blew it over in 1860. It was lovingly rebuilt and went on working for the next 60 years.

Get off your horse... T

here is a romance to being a cowboy that is hard to beat. When you couple that with a deep love of horses, then you have a hobby with real style. Western Ways, based a few miles from Hertford, focuses on the welfare of the horses it uses first and foremost. It trains people who want to learn the centuries-old skill of Western riding, teaching them a philosophy that means they really empathise with the animals they ride.

experience The principles of Western Riding can be traced back to nearly 400 years BC where Xenophon, the ancient Greek soldier and historian who is widely accepted as being the founder of modern horsemanship, wrote that balance, weight control and transfer, gentleness and patience are the keys to a well trained and supple horse. His philosophies remain in place today.

When the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in the Americas in the early 1500's they brought with them cattle-working and warfare practices that form the basis of Western Riding today. John Wayne made it look easy to lasso a steer as you ride at full pelt, but it takes dedication to train a horse to respond to a light pressure on the reins and a shift in your weight. When you master the skill, it is immensely satisfying. Western Ways offer tailor made courses to suit all levels, so if you fancy learning to be a cowboy or want to brush up on your skills before that ranching holiday in America call 07939 890938 or look on www.westernways.co.uk for more information.

he Cathedral at St Albans lies on the edge of the town centre, looking across stunning parkland. Here a visitor can make a choice - should they go down towards Roman Verulamium with its fascinating ruins, museum and lake or should they move back to the city and its myriad of attractions? First they should look in the cathedral itself, built to mark the site of the execution of the first English Christian martyr, St Alban. He died because he defied the Roman rulers by following the teachings of Jesus. Legend has it that as the executioner brought down his axe on Alban’s neck his eyes fell from his head. You will be pleased to hear that no such fate awaits the modern visitor. His remarkable story is celebrated on 18 June in the Alban Pilgrimage.

explore The Cathedral is stunning wherever you look, among its many highlights is the shrine to St Alban himself, an imposing gothic tomb with a scarlet canopy. Before you leave you can call in at the delightful café in the Chapter House where you can not only sample delicious food but also look at the art displays. Look on www.stalbanscathedral.org.uk for more information.

St Albans is home to CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale and has many real ale pubs and inns that will welcome you through their doors with a warm smile. Ye Olde Fighting Cocks dates back to the 8th Century. With its long history the Fighting Cocks could tell a few stories. There are tunnels stretching from the beer cellar to the Cathedral, which apparently were used by the Monks. www.yeoldefightingcocks.co.uk

If you carry on down the hill, past the historic Fighting Cocks pub (rumoured to be the oldest hostelry in the country) you will reach the lake and Verulamium Museum, where you can pass a good few hours travelling back in time to the early days of Christ. The Romans loved St Albans and made it their third largest city in England. It was destroyed during Boudicca’s revolt but this only spurred the citizens to a greater renewal. You can still see clear signs of the Romans’ skill including the famous mosaic that once graced a suite of rooms in a large town house. At Verulamium’s award-winning museum there is a real sense of life all those long centuries ago.

Whilst in St Albans pick up the Samuel Ryder Trail leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Town Hall which is located in St Peter’s Street. It gives you a short ‘9 hole’ introduction to this famous St Albans citizen who has achieved world-wide fame by giving his name to that most prestigious golfing event and trophy-the Ryder Cup. www.stalbans.gov.uk The Hertfordshire Show takes place on 28-29 May at the Showground in Redbourn. You can see the various horse & livestock shows, the Devil's Horsemen, the Sheep Shearing Show and much more. There is something for the whole family. The Enjoy! Hertfordshire marquee offers you lots of free activities, meet the Romans, enjoy our animal olympics and our art activities. Look on www.hertsshow.com

St Albans Signal Box is another jewel in St Albans crown. It is a rare grade 2 listed signal box built in 1892. It is constructed entirely of wood and has a rare 1906 Midland Railway 'tumbler' interlocking lever frame. It has regular open days and is reliant on donations to maintain the building. For a small donation you can vote for your favourite. There will be teas and cakes in the Village Hall, crafts and bric-a-brac for sale and a barbecue. Look on www.flamstead-herts.co.uk

Everywhere you go in St Albans you are bombarded with history. Boudicca swept through leaving ruins in her wake. The Wars of the Roses began here. The very tower of the cathedral is built with Roman bricks. The clock tower marks the rebellion of the townspeople against the power of the church, asserting their independence. No wonder that St Albans runs an extensive programme of guided walks covering every aspect of the town’s amazing past including the Samuel Ryder Trail Many visitors to this lovely town, with its timberframed buildings and quirky streets, will love the shops. Here St Albans scores highly again, with a large number of high street chains and scores of one-off boutiques and outlets selling everything from antiques to modern jewellery, formal suits and the latest fashions. Twice a week the town throngs with bargain hunters visiting the market held in St Peter Street at the heart of the town. There is also a monthly farmers’ market. If you have never been to St Albans, book yourself a treat. There will be few people who can call into this enchanting city and fail to be pleased or surprised.
