You can take the riverside walk from Ware into the county town of Hertford or if you are feeling lazy take the train. Hertford has Quaker links and you can see the Quaker Meeting House which is near to the bus station and outside Hertford Theatre you will find the statue of Samuel Stone who was born in Hertford in 1602. Having graduated from Cambridge he sailed across the Atlantic in 1663 on a ship called Griffin and arrived in Boston. He led his congregation from Massachusetts in 1636 and established a new Quaker colony at House of Hope, where he made peace with the local Indians and renamed their town Hartford after his own birthplace.

The biggest bed

he Great Bed of Ware has come back to Ware for 2012. It is on loan from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to Ware Museum and is probably the single best known object at the V & A and this is the first time it has ever been on loan to another venue. Dating from around 1590, The Great Bed of Ware is believed to have been one of the first tourist attractions ~ built by local craftsmen as a marketing gimmick to encourage travellers to stay at one of the five inns in the town. The Great Bed is over three metres wide and over two and a half metres high and is made entirely of oak. The huge bed posts are made by gluing several pieces of wood together and then

T

discover turning and carving them. A reproduction bed post can be seen and handled at Ware Museum as part of the supporting display. The bed coverings have been painstakingly recreated using materials and dyes that would have been around in the 1590s. It took six V & A staff almost a week to dismantle the bed into 40 pieces and pack it carefully for its journey home to Ware. Part of the roof of the museum had to be taken off to enable the Great Bed to fit into the museum.

It was promoted as being able to accommodate 12 travellers at once and many did break their journey to Cambridge or London just to spend a night in the bed. It became so famous that Shakespeare has Sir Toby Belch describe a sheet of paper as ‘big enough for the Bed of Ware!’ in Twelfth Night. The London Chronicle of the 4th July 1765 tells a story of how 26 butchers and their wives had slept in the bed for one night in 1689 as a wager, now that would have been cramped! The Bed attracted many visitors to Ware for over 250 years and it was moved around the five inns in Ware: The White Hart; The George; The Crown; The Bull and lastly at The Saracen’s Head from 1824 until 1869. It was then displayed at Rye House until 1931 when it was purchased by the V & A. Generations of visitors have left their mark on the Great Bed, carving their dates and initials into the wood. You can still read some of the dates – 1696

A few miles from Ware you will find Perry Green which is home to the Henry Moore Foundation. The former home of artist Henry Moore, you can see his magnificent sculptures in the countryside and in the gardens of his restored house, Hoglands. You can also visit his studios, see the Henry Moore Plasters’ Exhibition in the gallery and purchase Moore related items in the shop. There is a small café, but the local pub the Hoops is also owned by the Foundation and serves delicious locally sourced food in Moore inspired surroundings. Look on www.henry-moore.org/pg for opening times and admission prices. Scott’s Grotto is a short walk away from the museum through the town. It is an 18th century grotto with six interconnected chambers decorated with thousands of shells, flints and pieces of coloured glass. Flat shoes and a torch are essential to explore the grotto. It is open Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays through to the end of September. Look on www.eastherts.gov.uk for more information.

How to keep the kids entertained is always an issue but in Watford we’ve got that covered too because Watford is home to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour. There are few children, or adults for that matter, who have not been transfixed by the Harry Potter tales so an opportunity to visit full size sets, including the Great Hall, costumes, props, creature workshop and the Night bus is sure to delight. The walking

tours last about three hours but tickets sell fast so be sure to book in advance. If shopping is your thing then Watford is the place to be as The Harlequin Shopping Centre is home to more than 140 stores including John Lewis, fashionable high street brands such as River Island and Next as well as independent boutiques like Repertoire and Per Lui. With plenty of places to grab a tasty bite to eat and fabulous free events from arts and crafts with The Harlequin Secret Agents Kids Club in the summer, to fashion shows and styling events in the autumn, The Harlequin Shopping Centre makes for a fantastic day out. But perhaps you’re in need of a more tranquil pursuit? If this is the case then make a date to visit Cossiobury Park, a 190-acre haven of outstanding natural beauty. Stroll along the towpath beside the Grand Union Canal and River Gade,

Step Up are just one of the many acts confirmed for Imagine 2012

stopping only for a picnic, spot of fishing or a trip on the miniature railway. Unleash the offspring at the adventure play area or under 14s paddling pool and round your leisurely day off with a cup of tea and slice of homemade cake at the Cha Cha Cha tea Pavillion.

And getting to Watford couldn’t be easier with excellent transport links for both road and rail: the A41, M1 and M25 give easy access to the town centre as do the two mainline railway stations, Watford High Street and Watford Junction.

Watford’s town centre is bursting with pubs and restaurants offering a smorgasbord of culinary delights to suit all the family from the best of high street chains like La Tasca and Pizza Express to cosy bars such as Bar Bodega.

Hold the dates of Friday 17 & Saturday 18 August for the ‘Film on the Farm’ event at the Lavender Farm which will be raising money for Barnado’s. In its second year this fantastic open air film weekend is a brilliant way to enjoy the summer backdrop of lavender, while enjoying classic films in the open air. The programme is yet to be announced, but do hold the date in your diary. There will be a beer and wine tent, tea, coffee and ice cream on sale too. Tickets will be available from the farm later in the summer. www.hitchinlavender.com As part of the Hitchin Festival various guided tours around the lavender fields are on offer. You can learn about the history of lavender in Hitchin, how it started, how to plant, harvest and care for it and about the wildlife that it attracts. Tours are available on Monday 9 July; Friday 13 July, both at 10am and on Monday 23 July; Wednesday 25 July, both at 6.30pm. To book a tour place email: tim@hitchinlavender.com Rhythms of the World takes place on 14 & 15 July at Hitchin Priory. This world music festival is recognised as one of the best value festivals around. It aims to unite diverse communities through music, dance and the arts. Who needs Provence?

n the 16th Century the market town of Hitchin was one of only two major lavender growing areas in the country. At its height in the19th Century a hundred acres were grown around the town and it soon became renowned nationally. The work was very labour intensive and each field could continually produce abundant lavender crops for five years before they needed to be uprooted and burned, providing a fragrant aroma that blew across the town. The Hunter family have farmed at Cadwell for five generations and currently have over 12 acres of lavender. Visitors to the farm can walk through the

discover rows of lavender that make up two fields and are encouraged to pick the lavender to take home with you. Children love the freedom to run through the fields and adults enjoy the space to be able to relax outdoors. The fields are a photographers dream and are blessed with sweeping views from the footpaths that surround it and from the top of the hill you can see it in its full beauty. From 1940's day dresses to 1960's rockabilly, from vintage costume jewellery to 1930's costumes, from something you get married in to something you can sleep in, Hertfordshire Vintage Fairs will have it all, from £3 to £300. Vintage is really quite the thing these days. Not only are you doing your bit for the planet by buying a 'pre worn and pre loved' garment, you're also buying into our history, our past and everything that has made the world of fashion what it has become today. Hold the date of the next Vintage Fashion & Accessories Fair at North Herts College in Hitchin on Sunday 4 November, 10am - 4pm, admission is £3. Look on www.hertfordshire-vintage-fairs.com

Dozens of varieties are being planted around the new seated display area and sunflowers will be flowering in the larger field in August. Refreshments and light snacks including delicious homemade cakes are available in the 17th Century barn where you can also purchase lavender products and plants to remind you of your day out at Hitchin Lavender Farm ~ who needs Provence? For opening times look on www.hitchinlavender.com or telephone: 01462 434343. Admission is £4 for an adult and just £1 per child, tickets can also be purchased on line.

Halseys in Hitchin offers delicious homemade snacks and cakes, perfect for a recharge after shopping in Hitchin market and the large range of independent shops. The huge homemade baked beans on toast are particularly good. They often hold Tapas nights & look out for One Pot Thursday, all promoting local produce. Look on www.halseysdeli.co.uk for more details. The large general market is on Saturdays & Tuesdays and antiques & collectables on Friday mornings. Email: htci@hitchin.net for more information.
