Winston Churchill’s wife Clementine Hozier and the poet William Cowper both lived in Rectory Lane, Berkhamsted when they were children and Graham Greene was born in Chesham Road. In 1389 Geoffrey Chaucer was appointed Clerk of the Works at Berkhamsted Castle, in charge of the renovation works. He knew John of Gaddesden, who lived in nearby Little Gaddesden, who it is said was the model for his Doctor of Phisick in ‘The Canterbury Tales’. The Ashridge Estate offer many events throughout the year, ranging from themed walks to Bat talks. Up to 20 December you can take part in the Family Christmas Trail around the estate. On 27 December there is a Christmas walk to help you burn off those extra Christmas pounds. On your way around the estate you are bound to see some wildlife. Berkhamsted is home to one of Britain’s few totem poles. In the 1960s, Roger Alsford went to work at a lumber mill in Canada. After he was rescued from starvation during a strike, his brother visited Canada and in gratitude, commissioned a totem pole from the Canadian artist Henry Hunt. The 30 ft high pole remains in place today at Alsford’s Wharf. A few miles away from Berkhamsted lies the market town of Tring. Tring Farmers’ Market takes place alternate Saturday mornings and offers a full range of local produce and crafts such as: meat, eggs, preserves, jewellery and more. Check out the market for a really friendly shopping experience. www.tringfarmersmarket. co.uk Tring Market Auctions hold regular general sales on Saturdays of approximately 2000 lots of general antiques, collectables and household effects. They also hold bi-monthly Fine Art sales. Remember one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Look on www.tringmarketauctions. co.uk for dates and times of future sales.
