ertfordshire is home to historic houses such as Hatfield and Knebworth, beautiful gardens, farm and wildlife parks, shopping centres and the popular culture attraction, Warner Bros Studio – The Making of Harry Potter.

Neighbouring Bedfordshire may be one of England’s smallest counties but it’s still a joyful place to live and visit. Throughout its wonderful countryside you’ll find picturesque towns and villages such Woburn and Ampthill great places to eat and drink and renowned attractions such as Woburn Abbey, House and Gardens, and of course the Safari Park. To make your visit easier, we’ve suggested attractions which can all be used by coach, tour and travel operators. garden features and wild bio-diversity areas. The recreation of Repton’s original Pleasure Grounds from two hundred years ago continues today with new developments in the Garden every year.

The house is open on three floors, including the State Rooms, porcelain display in the Crypt and gold and silver vaults. There is a world renowned art collection with more than 250 pictures including works by Rembrandt, Reynolds and Van Dyck. There is also the largest private collection of Venetian views by Canaletto displayed in one room, 28 acres of Gardens and 3,000 acre deer park.

Woburn Abbey was a Cistercian monastery, begun in 1145 but dissolved in 1538 by Henry VIII, when it is said that the last Abbott was hanged from a tree in the park for treason. The Abbey first became a permanent home when the Fourth Earl moved his family here in 1619. The old monastic buildings were destroyed in a major rebuilding programme in the mid-18th century.

When the 6th Duke inherited the Abbey he commissioned Humphry Repton, the famous landscape gardener, to create designs for enhancing the gardens and deer park. Two hundred years later, enjoy the two-mile drive through the deer park and beautiful gardens inspired by the designs of Repton and nurtured by the dedicated Gardens team. Explore elegant horticultural as well as wooded glades,

View the Armada portrait, and learn about the symbolism of the objects surrounding Elizabeth I. Upstairs, explore how preceeding generations of Dukes and Duchesses filled the house with art and antiques and learn about each of their varied passions, including, the birth of afternoon tea, aeronautics and chinoiserie.

WOBURN ABBEY

ADVERTORIAL

WOBURN ABBEY

DUCHESS OF BEDFORD INTRODUCES AFTERNOON TEA Born Anna Maria Stanhope, 3 September 1783, Anna Maria was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Harrington and Jane Fleming. Kind and amiable, she delighted in socialising and occasionally indulged in indiscreet gossip. Her interests also included designing new clothes, fancy dress costumes and jewellery, embroidery (she embroidered a screen on display at Woburn Abbey), amateur dramatics, letter writing and especially gardening; her garden at Woburn was noteworthy and she was responsible for laying out the South Terrace garden. On the 23 June 1837 the new queen, Victoria, who had known Anna Maria for many years, wrote inviting her to become a Lady-in-Waiting. Anna attended as a Lady of the Bedchamber at the coronation on the 28 June. Despite having to vary her time between family and court, she corresponded frequently with her husband, sometimes twice a day.

In 1840 Anna Maria was the chief mourner at the funeral of HRH Princess Augusta, the younger daughter of George III and aunt of Victoria. Whilst Lady-in Waiting to the Queen, Anna Maria reputedly popularised the custom of afternoon tea at around 5pm, at least amongst the aristocracy. She is said to have had what she called ‘that sinking feeling’ at about that time of day, when the custom was to eat a large breakfast, light lunch and a later dinner, which now was being taken at 7pm or sometimes 8pm. Some believe the actual phrase may have been ‘à cinq heures’, a reference to tea at five o’clock. The new custom consisted of tea with perhaps thin toast or light sandwiches and fairy cakes and was generally taken by the ladies. Anna Maria died on 3 July 1857 but the tradition of afternoon tea lives on today at Woburn Abbey and around the world.
