ambridge Literary Festival, formerly Cambridge Wordfest, returns from 1 – 6 April and is set to deliver its longest and most ambitious festival to date. Cathy Moore, Festival Director, says: “Exciting times are ahead for the biggest literary party in the south east. In addition to high-profile speakers from the worlds of literature, media, science, comedy, history, politics and philosophy the festival will be commemorating The Great War; marking the 2014 World Cup with a strand of Brazilian themed events; celebrating the Dylan Thomas centenary; and partying with Kipper the dog as he turns 25! Confirmed participants include novelists Pat Barker, Melvyn Bragg, Jim Crace, Joanna Trollope, Rachel Joyce and Hanif Kureishi; politicians Douglas Alexander, Liam Byrne and Alan Johnson; journalists Kirsty Wark and Richard Benson; poets Carol Ann Duffy, Gillian Clarke and Owen Sheers; academics Martin Rees, David Runciman and John Carey; and mathematicians Simon Singh and Alex Bellos. he Curwen Print Study Centre is the proud new owner of a Columbian Press - a piece of fabulous print history which adds to the studio’s collection of historic relief presses. George Clymer invented this design of Press in 1813. It was the first iron standing press - a replacement for wooden presses but twice as costly - and the Eagle was a patriotic design element, but it was not hugely successful in the USA. Clymer then came to the UK, where in the 1820s he set up business with William Dixon, forming the Clymer & Dixon Company. By the 1840s presses were being manufactured all over Europe and were made for nearly a century.

ainsborough’s House is delighted to announce its exhibition of works from the Ford Collection. The works in this exhibition represent over a quarter of a century of discerning collecting. The works of Wilson and Lewis are very much in evidence. The drawings of these two English artists divided by a century show in turn how English artists chose to depict the wider world through the inspiration of the grand tour and pilgrimages to the Near East. Also, Richard Wilson, one of the most influential figures in British landscape painting, will be celebrated in this exhibition in the tercentenary year of his birth. E

njoy a Spicy Bowl of Drama at the Theatre Royal By Anna Scrafield. The Spring Season at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is characterised by its strong focus on drama, and is packed full of juicy treats for lovers of Shakespeare, modern writing, comedy or even the slightly surreal! But also on the menu is something rather spicy – a comic drama called Egusi Soup that explores the intricate and often hilarious politics of family life, through the tale of a BritishNigerian family, packing to return to Nigeria for a memorial service for their father. As suitcases bulge, tensions rise and the Egusi soup bubbles on the hob this family discover more about one another and about their identity... Written by Janice Okoh, a British-Nigerian playwright, this is her first play and was penned during her MA at the University of East Anglia. The production will be brought to the Theatre Royal by Menagerie Theatre Company who are also responsible for the fantastic Cambridge-based Hotbed Festival, which celebrates and nurtures new writing. And whilst Okoh’s basis for writing the play was to contemplate her own roots it was also to explore the similarity in all of us, as she says – “I think there is something in the play that will resonate with a lot of people”. Indeed, although this tale gives us a fascinating insight into the world of the British-Nigerian family, Lorna Gayle, who plays the role of Mrs Anyia the grieving wife and mother, agrees with Okoh and describes the play as being “a universal story”, going on to explain that its unifying factor is in its subject matter – family. It is a well-known fact, agreed the world over in every country and culture, that when a family comes together there are usually a few fireworks! Old sores and new frustrations come to the surface, grown-up children become teenagers again, and whilst everyone works to hold the family together, they do so by airing their irritation! This is a play that will surely raise a smile of recognition in anyone, as the Anyia family pack, unpack, and repack their suitcases - exploring their emotional baggage along the way. Egusi Soup is at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds from Feb 20 – 22, performances at 7.30pm plus a 2.30pm matinee on Sat 22. Box Office 01284769505 www.theatreroyal.org

Weddings

Plan your

Perfect Wedding Step One: The Right Venue You’ve done it! You’re engaged! And now it’s time to get planning in earnest. Sometimes the sheer volume of what goes into a wedding is daunting, but the key to success is to take the process one manageable step at a time. Eastlife is here to help. Step One: Venues!

T

he first step is to establish the tone of your day. What do you think your wedding will be like? Traditional or quirky? A huge showcase of an event or small family affair? These questions are important, as they will ultimately define what kind of venue, ceremony, décor and food you need to opt for. It’s worth looking on the internet and in magazines for inspiration – save any images that particularly resonate with you. Looking at a mood board of wedding ideas will make it easier to pinpoint the wedding trends and ‘look’ that you want to go for. Picking a venue is an important starting point. Is impressive period architecture something you dream of? Or perhaps you just want to be close to nature and the beautiful countryside? The good news is that East Anglia is home to all of these things and more. Saturdays are the most popular day to get married for obvious reasons. As such, you’d better book at least three-six months in advance to avoid disappointment. Some venues will offer deals or discounts on weeknight weddings, but seriously consider the

implications of this before you book – will you be seriously inconveniencing those you want to invite? If you do opt for a weeknight wedding, make sure you give plenty of notice. Consider choosing a hotel wedding, as the staff there will be experts on pulling off a smooth wedding celebration and take some of the pressure off you. There’s also the advantage that there will be plenty of rooms for the guests to stay in. Hotel Felix in Cambridge is a perfect example of this type of venue. Well suited to many types of weddings, they are having a wedding showcase on 23 February. You can’t imitate the kind of elegance that this beautiful boutique hotel has to offer, and with an elegant Victorian villa at its heart, the vintage quota is filled as well. Despite being just five minutes from the city centre, the setting is tranquil and charming at any time of year. The wedding showcase will highlight the private rooms and romantic Gazebo on offer, both licensed for civil ceremonies and partnerships. At events like this, you get to

see the venue bedecked in all of its wedding finery and can really visualise what it could look like on your day. The opportunity to meet the staff is always a plus, too, as it gives you the chance to ascertain how experienced they are. Good wedding showcases, like Hotel Felix’s, may also feature fashion shows so that you can get an idea of what local boutiques have to offer by way of gowns and suits. For more information, contact 01223 814358 or email wedding@hotelfelix.co.uk. Another great local wedding show well worth checking out is the Through the Ages Wedding Show at Ponsbourne Park Hotel, on 16 February. Brides seeking a fashionably vintage inspired wedding will be thrilled with themed rooms devoted to vintage, rustic, 50s and 60s, Hollywood glamour and modern times. The showcase, complete with fashion show, will be perfect inspiration not just for venues, but for all aspects of your wedding. So there you have it – planning a perfect wedding may just be easier than you think. Just start with careful consideration of your ideal East Anglian venue, and the rest will unfold from there. eastlife.co.uk|29

Blushing Bride

Bridal beauty needn’t be boring - here’s our edit of the spring’s biggest beauty trends to get you wedding ready in the most up-tothe-minute way

T

he venue’s booked, the invitations have been sent out and a certain white dress hangs in your wardrobe…you’ve planned everything down to the last detail, so don’t fall down at the last hurdle – your makeup. On the surface, wedding makeup may seem like the simplest thing in the world – every bride just wants to look beautiful and photo-ready on her big day. But there are so many different ways to enhance your own unique beauty, and so many developments in the beauty industry to help you do it. Plus, there’s no point in pairing a dress that’s classic or fashion-forward or minimalistic with a makeup look that doesn’t match. The biggest beauty story of the Spring/Summer catwalks was barely there, natural makeup. Skin glistens with artfully placed highlighter and illuminating primers, and eyes are not smoked or contoured, only brightened. A great insiders’ trick is ‘invisible

eyeliner’; liquid eyeliner placed as close to the lashline as possible to create an eye-widening look that is not noticeable to the untrained eye. The no makeup look is romantic and youthful as well as minimalistic – it allows you to look thoroughly like yourself. It pairs well with most dresses, matching perfectly with simple ones and providing a pareddown contrast with more embellished looks. It’s also a great option for makeup-phobic brides, or those who don’t wear makeup often in their day-to-day lives. As a bonus, glowy, illuminated skin looks fabulous in pictures. Vintage dresses look great with vintage-inspired looks to match. Some of the most polished weddings are held together by a theme, from the dress to the décor to the music, and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t extend to the bride’s makeup look. This season sees an embrace of the perennially chic cat eye and girly, pale

pink makeup of the 50s and 60s. Pair your dramatic cat eye with feminine pale-rose lips and cheeks for a gorgeous retro look. Carry the vintage feel through to your hair with teased Brigitte Bardot inspired locks – beehives, bouffants and big hair are perfect for such a special occasion, and there’s no risk that in years to come the pictures will look dated. Speaking of beauty looks from days gone by, 70s glam is also having a moment this season - think bronzed and glossy. Sun-kissed and illuminated cheeks paired with sheer reddish-coral lips, gold-embellished eyes, and long, sleek hair speak of updated and lustrous retro glamour – the perfect counterpoint to fussy wedding dress styles. Lots of brides choose to compliment their vintage wedding look with an old Hollywood makeup style, complete with a bold red lip, and who can blame them? eastlife.co.uk|45

Weddings It is a beauty look that always works. Glamorous, just a little vampy, and always in style. For the more daring or fashion forward bride, there are some striking new trends that will make a real impact on the big day. Bright statement lips were seen all over the catwalks – primarily in shades of orange. The rest of the face and hair must be left simple for a modern effect that’s not overdone. A less ostentatious interpretation of the trend is to go for shades that lean more coral or red. Opting for a matte finish is both fashionable and dampens some of the loudness. Lips aren’t the only facial feature brides like to play up though – eyes, as they say, are the windows to the soul and eye makeup can make or break a look. This season, beauty trends are offering up a new way to incorporate your ‘something blue’: with a streak of azure on your eyelid. Although it’s not for the fainthearted, this trend isn’t a rehashing of the dreaded frosty 80s hue of your nightmares. The contemporary look is bold, bright, and largely devoid of sparkle. It’s understandable if these bright graphic lines are too much for you, but you can still include a nod to the trend in your wedding look. Eyeliner (or shadow) in subtle shades of rich, shimmering navy really bring out the colour in the eyes and have the added bonus of making the whites of your eyes look whiter. Whether you’re doing your own makeup, or enlisting the aid of a beauty professional, it’s important to have a clear idea of what you want to avoid tears and last-minute repair jobs. You will likely treasure the photo memories of this day for years to come, and the last thing you want is to find fault with your face. Make sure you road test all the looks you’re considering too, so that you can be entirely sure you’re making the right decision. Lastly, don’t stress! Whatever your make up look, your natural radiance and happiness will shine through. All brides are beautiful.

Spruce Up

We’ve covered the top beauty trends for brides, but that doesn’t mean that the grooms out there should slack off and leave all of the preening to their better half. Weddings are not just about the bride, they’re about the couple, and let’s face it, how many grooms really want to be totally outshined on their wedding day? DITCH THE SCRUFF Sure, beards had a bit of a fashion ‘moment’ in 2013. We saw Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and even Jeremy Paxman sporting furry faces. But as Paxman himself said, ‘beards are so 2013’. Get with the times and make sure you’re smart and clean-shaven. If you must keep some stubble, then at the very least get it smartly shaped and trimmed. A close shave from a barber is a nice ritual that will make you feel a bit pampered too.

MENACE Multi award-winning Essex salon, Menace Male Grooming provides anything from simple haircuts and cut throat shaves to hair removal and relaxing spa style treatments. They promise first class service without the first class price tag. SKIN MATTERS Even if you haven’t been sporting a beard anytime recently, you’re still not immune to typical skincare issues. The trick is to get into a regular skincare routine, and to tailor it to your needs. Spotty skin? Then target it with medicated cleansers. Dry and flaky? You’ll need an emollient moisturiser. Even if your skin is in reasonable nick, you still need to cleanse and moisturise twice daily at the very least, and exfoliate twice weekly if you can.

SALONS If that’s all of the primping that your masculine sensibilities can take, then fair enough. New Hall School

Oxford House School

New Hall School is a leading independent boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3 - 18 years. Founded in 1642, New Hall School is the oldest Catholic school in the UK that has always taken girls, and the largest Catholic boarding and day school in England. At New Hall staff operate the highly successful ‘diamond model’ structure. In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds: the benefits of a co-educational environment together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 and 4. The provision of single-sex education during formative years enables students to grow in confidence, whilst enjoying an education that is specifically tailored and that recognises the different ways in which boys and girls learn. Founded in 1959, this intimate and exclusive school offers every child a complete education that puts a high emphasis on traditional values and the child centred learning of the Montessori Method. The school aims to understand and to develop the potential which all children possess and to send them on to senior schools as literate, numerate, well-mannered and happy individuals. The broad curriculum is enriched by encouraging a love for literature, languages, music, dance and drama. The school’s high success rate for pupils gaining places in selective state and independent schools is excellent To request a prospectus, arrange a personal visit to the school or for details of our next open day please contact Mrs Harding, Admissions Registrar on 01206 576686. 2 – 4 Lexden Road, Colchester, CO3 3NE, www.oxfordhouseschool.net.

The Curriculum at Maldon Court Preparatory School has been devised so that all children can achieve to the very best of their ability and gain entry into the Senior Schools of their choice. All teachers have a curriculum responsibility and they keep abreast of developments in their area and introduce changes, which will benefit pupils when necessary. Whether in sport, music, drama or academics, pupils are encouraged to ‘have a go’. Everyone finds that taking part in one of the excellent range of sports or performing arts is great fun. There are plenty of opportunities to excel at local, regional or national level and the school’s aim is to develop skills which pupils can go on to enjoy in adult life. andmade Oriental rugs and carpets are individual works of art, handmade by artists and craftspeople whose designs are unique to their own tribes and areas. They represent long-term investments which, if given the care they deserve, will reward their owners with decades of good service. Very often rugs will become damaged whilst in the home by general wear and tear, holes caused by animals and rodents, infestations of moth, and also household disasters from fire and flood. The maintenance and repair of handmade rugs and carpets is a specialised field, of which many are not aware exists. Restoration and conservation are essential as each handmade rug and carpet is unique, and therefore irreplaceable. Furthermore, as their value tends to be high, it is often more economically viable to carry out repairs rather than offering any form of replacement.

A qualified restorer will offer advice on the origin, date and value of each individual rug, and provide a written estimate for the various repair and cleaning options. They will also advise on which repairs demand urgent attention. The cleaning of handmade rugs is also a specialised area. If cleaning is not carried out by a specialist who understands the intricacies of dealing with fine one off rugs, a great deal of irreversible damage can be caused. The RESTORATION Workshops in Long Melford are one of the few places in the UK with the specialist skills to offer a full range of services. New Lease of

Life

Interiors

R

educe, Reuse, and Recycle – we’re all familiar with these tenets of eco-friendly living by now. Recycling our waste and reducing our energy usage (and the associated bills) are now de rigueur for most households. But how much do we actually reuse? No, not the jam jars you clean out and use for your summer glut of tomato chutney or take away boxes that have a new lease of life by housing last night’s dinner. We’re all too quick to throw away things deemed ‘broken’, ‘tired’ or ‘dated’. Unloved chairs with ghastly 80s upholstery, squat cabinets with sad doors hanging off hinges, and difficult-to-manage period details are disposed of without much thought. Newer must equal better, right? Not necessarily. Stylish interior design does not depend on the hottest new thing available in the shops. In fact, more and more designers are looking to the past and its relics to inspire new, more creative ideas. This explains why ‘upcycling’ is such a huge trend right now, and looks set to be for a long while to come. Take an old piece of furniture, and look at its positive points rather than the negatives. So you don’t like the colour, or the pattern. Maybe it’s bashed up after many years of heavy use. Sanding down the wood and re-varnishing it in a finish of your choice will give it a new lease of life. It’s neither difficult nor too expensive to commission someone to reupholster a chair, stool or sofa. Choose the fabric that suits your taste and the aesthetic of your home – subtly chic neutrals, modernist geometric patterns, or whimsical vintage-style prints. For minimalist, on-trend style, opt for a bright pop of accent colour. Another hugely stylish option is to actually paint the wood itself a colour of your choice. This works particularly well with cabinets, chests of drawers and wardrobes to create an attractive colour blocking effect in your home. There are plenty of different shades of wood paint available now, so feel free to experiment. Tones of beige, grey and brown may be elegant, subdued

choices, but colour is huge right now in all areas of design, from fashion to interiors. Pick what goes with the vibe of your whole home – bright accent colours such as tropical azure and yellow (hugely trendy colours right now), or pretty pastels like the palest blues, pinks and mint greens (a trend that’s not going anywhere anytime soon). Why not go all out and opt for a decadent metallic? The opulent effect is equal parts glamorous and neutral, and can really lift a room. Furniture isn’t the only thing that can be restored to a new level of its former glory. The same logic can be applied to pretty much anything in your home – photo frames, mirrors, even doors. In a society where we’re all looking for the next big thing, we often lose appreciation for the beauties of the past. Worse, we often make the mistake of thinking we need to cut these so-called ‘archaic’ details out in order to make way for the new. This is not the case. If you live in a period property, even supposedly tricky-to-maintain period details need not be intrusive or anomalous. Ensure cohesiveness throughout your home – interior design firms specialising in restoration can help with this by carefully restoring historic details all over to your specification. Changing the colours (for example, by painting all embellishment uniform white or an accent metallic or colour) can either play up vintage detailing to a modern effect or dampen it into an interesting facet of the background. The strong lines of beams and inglenook fireplaces play well with strong, broad lines found in modernism. There’s nearly always a way to reinvigorate the old without just mindlessly bringing in the new. So, before you carelessly toss something on the scrapheap in your quest for a fresh new home, think out of the box. What are the item’s positive points? How could you freshen it up? There’s always a way, and the best part is that you’re not constrained by anyone else’s creative vision – you can achieve exactly the look you want, tailored perfectly to your home.■ eastlife.co.uk|71

Gardening

B

Decline In Numbers

eekeepers and gardeners have noticed that bees are less healthy and abundant in recent years than they have been in the past. If this trend continues, it could have serious implications, since most plants rely on bees and other insects to transfer pollen from one flower to another in order to set fruits and seeds.

BEES CAN BE CATEGORISED INTO THREE GROUPS •

The honeybee is a social bee that forms large colonies that overwinter. It can be kept in hives and is the source of honey and beeswax. A strong honeybee colony may contain about 60,000 bees. Bumblebees are also social bees but their nests die out in late summer or early autumn. There are about 24 bumblebee species in Britain but only about 12 are commonly seen in gardens. At peak strength in midsummer, a bumblebee nest may contain up to 200 bees. There are about 260 species of solitary bee in Britain, some of which are rare species confined to restricted habitats. Common types of garden solitary bees include some of the Andrena, Osmia, Megachile, Lasioglossum and Nomada species. Solitary bee nests are even smaller and with these non-social bees, each female constructs and provisions her nest on her own.

WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS? •

The strength and health of honeybee colonies has declined, making it more difficult for beekeepers to maintain their hives in good condition. Some bumblebee and solitary bee species are doing well and have increased their distribution in Britain. Others have

shown marked declines over the last 30 years. Bumblebees and solitary bees that are able to collect nectar and pollen from a wide range of plants, including garden flowers, are generally maintaining their numbers and distribution. It is species that are more selective in their flower-visiting habits, or have special requirements for nest sites, that have declined in numbers and now have a more restricted distribution. Many garden plants and agricultural/horticultural crops need bees to bring about pollination by transferring pollen from the flowers’ anthers to the stigmas. These include most tree and soft fruits, and many vegetables including runner beans, broad beans, tomatoes, marrows and courgettes Plants that are not pollinated will not set fruits or produce seeds.

WHAT CAN BE DONE? •

Provide nest sites for bumblebees. Bumblebee nest boxes can be purchased but they are often ignored by queen bumblebees. They prefer to find their own nest sites down tunnels dug by mice or in grass tussocks. The tree bumblebee, Bombus hypnorum, has recently colonised Britain and will often use bird nest boxes. Grow flowers that bees like. Honeybees are active from late winter to autumn, so try and have bee-friendly plants in flower for as much of that time as possible. Use pesticides sparingly. Those based on fatty acids or plant oils and extracts pose little danger to bees but will not control all pests. Avoid spraying open flowers and if possible do spraying in the evening when bees are less active. n

Foster Care

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD’S LIFE?

T

he Foster Care Co-operative (FCC) is actively recruiting foster carers across the East of England. This year more than 8,000 new foster carers will be needed across England and the agency is seeking carers in this area to provide stable and loving homes for children of all ages and backgrounds, to give them the chance of family life and realise their full potential. The Foster Care Co-operative - a not for profit organisation and the only co-operative operating in foster care in the UK - has been operating for almost 15 years and has strong local groups of carers in the Eastern counties. FCC is above all child orientated taking great care to match children with foster carers and has a special culture which is based on valuing foster carers and

staff and is dedicated to providing mutual support that will change a child’s life. Anyone can foster and carers come from all walks of life. What all foster carers have in common is a commitment to the children. Carers need to be able to offer a child or children a room of their own as well as offering patience, time and commitment to young people of different ages. Carers also need to be reasonably fit and healthy and are subject to criminal disclosure checks. A sense of humour is valuable too! In return, the agency offers professional support from fully qualified social workers, full and comprehensive training and a fee which recognises a professional caring role. Go to www.fostercarecooperative.co.uk for more details about FCC. n

SKIING INJURY?

Health

NUFFIELD HEALTH CAMBRIDGE CAN HELP

S

kiing and snowboarding is one of the most popular, although potentially dangerous, winter sports. More and more people are taking to the slopes for this winter holiday, but those that do go must be prepared for not only the physical nature of the sport, but also what they should do if they are unlucky enough to injure themselves. Avoidance of injury is obviously preferable and every effort should be made to be physically fit before departing on a ski trip. A number of injuries are caused by weakness and muscle fatigue and these can be avoided with appropriate pre-skiing conditioning. Many health centres, sports therapists and physiotherapists are able to provide a pre-skiing programme before departure. Whilst at the resort it is imperative to obtain the right equipment. In particular, be cautious with ski boots and binding settings. Modern ski technology and the variety of designs available mean it is possible to obtain comfortably fitting, secure, boots that help protect the lower leg and ankle joints. Correct setting of the ski bindings is imperative to allow quick release of the ski should you fall. Failure to release can impart a significant torsional force on your knee, resulting in a potential injury. Those that have skied previously will be well aware of the number of people that do fall and injure themselves. The severity of the injury can range from simple bruises, knocks, minor sprains and strains of ligaments to more major joint disruptions. The knee is unfortunately the most common joint injured and although a number of these are relatively minor, a few can be significant. Significant injuries will nearly always be associated with swelling. When a person is unable to ski on, they are often evacuated to the local medical centre and these can provide an accurate diagnosis of the disorder and instigate appropriate therapy when required. A considerable number of knee injuries result in damage to either the meniscus or a ligament. Minor meniscal injuries may be exceedingly painful initially, but will settle reasonably quickly with simple non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. A few will settle sufficiently to allow a return to skiing, but some patients may have major mechanical problems within the joint, which will keep them from further

ski activities. Major ligamentous injuries are more problematical. These will often be braced or treated in a plaster. Where possible, it is imperative to elevate the leg, use a compression bandage and ice packs to reduce the swelling. Non-steroidal antiinflammatories can help with the pain and control the swelling. On return to this country it is wise to seek an expert opinion quickly to ascertain what type of therapy is required. Often, with minor injuries, patients will be referred to physiotherapy and sports therapists to allow an active rehabilitation programme to start as soon as possible before the joint stiffens and excessive muscle mass is lost. More significant injuries may require detailed investigation and possible further treatment. People unfortunate enough to sustain a knee injury whilst skiing, would be well advised to seek the care of the local medical practitioner to ensure that the joint is stabilised sufficiently. As mentioned, where possible (RICE) rest, ice, compression and elevation should be used to help the pain and swelling and then seek expert advice on returning to this country. Such expert advice can be found in the form of Nuffield Cambridge’s Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dennis Edwards. For more information or to book an appointment call 08456034346. DIABETES EVERYDAY EATING “I want to be told what I can eat – not what I can’t.”

I

DDT is frequently contacted by people who want advice about their diet. Very often, particularly just after diagnosis, people feel confused about the advice they are given on healthy eating. They feel insecure about what they are eating and how this may affect their diabetes or they simply do not have enough information about diet. These feelings may hold equally true for family members who will also have a role in the changes to diet that the household may have to make. Very often, people are told that they need to eat healthily, lose weight and to stay away from sugary and fatty foods. This particularly applies to people with Type 2 diabetes and while this advice is not bad advice, it can leave people without the information they need during a stressful time. As one gentleman said “I want to be told what I can eat – not what I can’t”. And what about people with Type 1 diabetes? If you are lucky enough to go on a DAFNE education course or to have an insulin pump, you are taught to count carbohydrates. If you were diagnosed before 1986 you were automatically taught to count carbs. However, the introduction of ‘Healthy eating’ for the general population resulted in carb counting almost disappearing for people with diabetes. Most of those who had carb counted continued to do so, but there is a whole generation of people using insulin who have never been taught. Perhaps just as importantly, there is a whole generation of health professionals who have not been fully trained in carb counting in order to teach their patients to do it safely and achieve the best blood glucose control possible. In the real world, we cannot suddenly expect this situation to be rectified - simply because of sheer numbers and time. There is evidence that carb counting is beneficial for people taking insulin and equally, that it is important that people with Type 2 diabetes taking tablets are aware of the effects carbohydrates have on blood glucose levels. There are real health benefits from carb counting and IDDT believes that we cannot sit back and do nothing. It is for these reasons IDDT has produced a 4-week Menu Plan prepared by Consultant Dietitian, Dr Mabel Blades and endosed by the NHS. The Menu Plan is not intended to be a substitute for an individual diet plan prepared by a dietitian or other health professional. It is intended to give people ideas about what they can eat – everyday, affordable meals in an easy to look at way. It will be especially useful to anyone who has been newly diagnosed or who has had a member of the family diagnosed. It is based on the principles of healthy eating and could help with weight loss (whether you have diabetes or not!). It provides an introduction to counting carbohydrates and is a stepping stone to learning more about diet and diabetes.n

People feel confused about what they can eat

‘Diabetes Everyday Eating’ is available free of charge from IDDT to people who live with diabetes and to health professionals to give to their patients. Copies can be obtained by contacting IDDT: 01604622837, enquiries@iddtinternational.org, PO Box 294, Northampton NN1 4XS. www.iddtinternational.org.

SLEEP FAIRIES PEACEFUL NIGHTS

S

leep Fairies Maternity was founded by Jacqueline Stubbings - who is a Maternity Nurse Practitioner and Sleep Trainer herself - to provide a much needed service to new and sleep deprived parents throughout Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties with the help of maternity nurses, sleep trainers, night nannies, parents and babysitters. Sleep Fairies understand that sleep deprivation leaves babies over-tired and fractious. Parents are exhausted too, and this leaves them wishing they had that ideal person to guide, support and help them to establish a sleep and feeding routine that works. All their candidates are qualified and experienced maternity nurse practitioners and have been through a strict selection process and hold a current CRB and Paediatric First aid Certificate. They can help, advise and support you with breastfeeding, settling your baby to sleep, troubleshooting and all other aspects of new-born care. They can be booked

for just a few hours, days or weeks, or through one of their following packages. The Initial £70 Sleep Training Package comes with a FREE individually tailored sleep programme; which, if followed consistently, along with the techniques that they teach you, will get your baby sleeping better within 3 days. Your sleep trainer will call you before the home visit to establish the problem you’re having with your baby’s sleep routine and continue to support you after the visit for a further week, as part of the Initial two hour package. Smaller problems are usually solved within the initial consultation time, through tweaking a few things that make all the difference, or you can discuss with your sleep trainer, which is the best package to suit you. The Welcome Home Mother and Baby Gift Packages from just £199 makes a wonderful gift to welcome home mum and baby after the birth or C-section. Why not gift someone you love, or make a gift to yourself at this very special time!

Your maternity nurse can accompany you home from the hospital if you wish and will stay in your home with you to carry out all aspects of new born care for you, so that you can relax and bond with your new baby. She will help you to establish a sleep/feeding routine and make sure that you drink, eat and sleep enough to recover before she leaves, offering you follow up support for a further couple of weeks. Whatever your situation is, Sleep Fairies are here to help make your baby experience a whole lot easier. Whether you need help getting your baby to sleep better through the night, a good night’s sleep yourself, a nanny for other children or general household help, Sleep Fairies will offer you an exceptional service. For more information visit their website on www.sleepfairies.co.uk or alternatively email Jacqueline your queries on the following: jacqui@ sleepfairies.co.uk . 01733248101 / 07517987182. ■

Firstly let’s take a leisurely visit to the delightful, medieval town of The Lion House Gallery Lavenham. Here 12 High Street, Lavenham we find the magical Suffolk , CO10 9PR Lion House Gallery. 01787 249616 Bursting with contemporary www.lionhousegallery.co.uk treasures, it is hard to contain ones pleasure at the visual and tactile splendour displayed. This month “The Garden in Spring” exhibition will be providing the green shoots of warmth and joy, with its celebration of the brighter and kinder days to come. Amongst the artists on show, Suffolk painter, Lucy Grossmith will be cheering and inspiring us with a delicate and intricate collection of limited edition prints, from her latest series of garden paintings. Full of subtle colour and laced with visual melody, Lucy’s works capture your imagination and heart. Weaving together the more beautiful products of man and nature, these harmonious paintings are full of air, texture and joy. Delving further within this bountiful chest of discoveries, we can find a personal favourite, ceramicist Pru Green. Her vibrant hand thrown earthenware jugs, bowls and mugs are irresistible, as I found to my own, enjoyable, cost! Pru combines colour and pattern with powerfully light, lively, slips and richer darker tones, to create pieces of must-have character and quality. THE GARDEN IN SPRING: 1 FEBRUARY - 1 MARCH

oth cruel and beautiful, February can be one of the most challenging months. With the weather bitter and the days still only promising to stay with us that little bit longer, it can be hard to keep the blues at bay! Fortunately colour and light can always be found amongst our superb and wonderful, regional fine and contemporary art galleries.

Popping down south, be sure to fit in time to catch the latest recommendations from Harpenden’s most established and renowned art dealer, Andrew Wilson, of the A &

K Wilson Gallery. Andrew’s eye for a good work is legendary in Hertfordshire and I have been enjoying his choices for a couple of decades now. This month he is focusing on two of Hertfordshire’s local artists, Vanessa Stone and Justine Lois Thorpe. These two artists demonstrate beautifully Andrew’s wide-ranging, honest and expert appreciation of genuine work. From the potency and dynamic stillness of Stone’s valentine inspired paper cuts, raging lines and plains of colour, from Thorpe’s wildly charged contemporary oils, Andrew brings together an exciting contrast of genre and style. ■

GAINSBOROUGH HOUSE 11 JANUARY – 31 MAY

300 YEARS OF HISTORY 1714 saw the coronation of George I and the birth of the Georgian age and we celebrate this three hundred year anniversary in 2014. The beginning of this important epoch in Sudbury is wonderfully brought to life in an extraordinary contemporary picture of the town: Brewer’s map of Sudbury in 1714. The map, which is owned by Sudbury Town Council, has resided for many years in Suffolk Record Office in Bury St Edmunds. Gainsborough’s House has been delighted to organise the conservation of the map so that it can be publicly displayed for the first time. It can be seen by residents of Sudbury and visitors to the town. It gives us a remarkable glimpse of Sudbury three hundred years ago. WHO MADE IT? It was probably Cornelius Brewer, whose signature can be seen with the inscription on the left hand side. Brewer, of neighbouring Borley, managed the estate of Francis Dashwood in Sudbury. Dashwood and his brother Samuel were silk merchants who had political and commercial links with Sudbury. WHAT WAS IT MADE OF? Brewer’s map was hand drawn on vellum, probably sheep skin or calf skin, using iron gall ink and various shades of watercolour. Iron gall ink is made using iron salts and tannic acid extracted from oak galls (growths on oak trees). The map is in a fair condition for its age, but the high acidity of the ink, fading and marks on its surface and other damage meant that it required some conservation work

before being mounted and framed for display. WHY WAS IT MADE? According to the inscription the map was created to show the extent of Sudbury’s common pastures. At that time the town’s aldermen controlled the town corporation and the commons. Their houses are prominently shown on the map, and together with the elaborately decorated town crest, suggests that they ordered for the map to be made. DOES GAINSBOROUGH’S HOUSE APPEAR ON THE MAP? The early decades of the eighteenth century witnessed the slow transformation of English towns. Medieval wattle and daub constructions became concealed behind brick-built facades. On Brewer’s Map, Gainsborough’s House appears, although it is not clear which House. The Gainsborough family bought the house in 1722 some eight years after the map was made. A fascinating display of the map will be shown at Gainsborough’s House from 11 January – 31 May 2014 and celebrates three hundred years since its creation. With grateful thanks to Andrew Phillips who supported the conservation of the map. market town with a rich history, Holt is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a busy, thriving settlement and has flourished ever since. Although the weekly market for which the town grew famous was stopped in the 1960s, Holt remains a picturesque jewel in the heart of North Norfolk. After being savaged by fire in 1708 the town was almost entirely rebuilt in the Georgian style, and to this day it remains one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Britain. The Holt North Norfolk Railway Station lies just a short bus ride from the town centre, and from here the famous ‘Poppy Line’ runs steam train services to the popular seaside town of Sheringham. Not only is this a chance to revisit history in motion, but experiencing the stunning Norfolk coastal countryside from the traditional interior of a steam train is a truly unforgettable experience. Letheringsett Watermill is the last remaining watermill in Norfolk to still produce flour. It has a long history dating back at least to the 11th century, and its magnificent redbrick building was rebuilt in 1802 of the devastation of a fire. These days, the mill is an award-winning tourist attraction after being taken over and restored by Mike and Marion Thurlow in the late 1980s. Speciality Spelt flour is milled

here, and this certified organic flour, higher in Vitamin B and Protein than most wheat, is available in the mill shop together with various other flours and dried fruit and nuts. For a fascinating insight into both the production of flour and the mill’s rich history, join one of the working demonstrations of milling and the full mill tour. A place of worship for nearly a thousand years, the Parish Church of St. Andrew is located a short distance from the war memorial in the heart of the town. Although the site has been home to a church since the 11th century, a great deal of the building that stands today dates back to the 1300s. Renovations to church were carried out following the Great Fire of Holt in the 18th century, and again during the 1860s and as recently as 2005. Whether you’re attracted to the quiet sense of spirituality imbued in this beautiful church or its stunning architecture and abundant history, the parish church of St. Andrew is a must-see when you find yourself in the lovely town of Holt. Holt Country Park is a must for nature-lovers, or for anyone who just wants to get away from it all and relax, taking in the breath-taking countryside. The Green Flag award-winning park is situated on the edge of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is home to a wide array of wildlife, including goldcrests, greater spotted woodpeckers and deer. n

town being open to view, whilst also taking into account certain well know buildings around town such as the church, Town Hall and Sir John Leman House. Give us a quirky or little-known fact about the town... Elliott and Garrood Ltd, the former Beccles engineers employed local women who made 18-pounder shells during the First World War. When the war ended, the girls who worked there had to pay two shillings and sixpence (12.5p) if they wanted to take home an engraved reject shell with their names on it. It would be interesting to know if many of these shells still exist? The Mayor and her very supporting family.: Daniel, Stephen and Chelsea

What must-see attractions in Beccles would you recommend for visitors? Everybody associates Beccles with the clock tower and there is a wonderful view of the town and the Norfolk bank and marshes. For me I think St Michael’s Church is one of Beccles’ most beautiful buildings and one where Admiral Lord Nelson’s parents were married. There is some wonderful stone and wood work within the church and it is the home of the ‘Mayor’s Chairs’, which past Beccles Mayors have sat in at functions held in the church. They were brought out for the first time in many years for the Remembrance Service last November. Another must is Sir John Leman House, the Museum in Ballygate where there is currently a wonderful exhibition on Dorothy Hodgkin Crowfoot. Also along Ballygate is the wonderful Georgian former rectory and just up from the museum a old timber framed house.

We catch up with Mayor Caroline Topping and find out about her favourite places in town ...

What is your favourite thing about Beccles? If you want to see places of historical interest in Beccles then you must take part in Beccles Helping Hands (beccleshelpinghands.co.uk) history walks. These walks take you to parts of Beccles you would not otherwise visit and you are escorted by a knowledgeable group of people, in authentic costume, who can tell you the history of the area and buildings you visit. What do you like to do in Beccles? My personal favourite thing to do is go out on my canoe with my family and see the River Waveney, which I think is a beautiful stretch of water. My place of work is beside the river in Puddingmoor where we regularly see a kingfisher visit and fish, as well as herons and an otter. Seeing these from my office window inspired me to purchase a canoe last year to get closer to the river and enjoy its peace and quiet and the wildlife you would not normally see in the town. In fact my favourite view of St Michaels church is sitting in my canoe on the river by the Beccles Rowing Club. What’s on in 2014 that you’re looking forward to? I am looking forward to the 2014 Beccles Duck Race (becclesduckrace.org) which will be held on a sunday early in September and will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of this very well supported Beccles event. This year it is being run by the Beccles Rugby Club and funds raised will go to the development of the youth section of the club. Last year this event raised nearly £6500 for the Beccles Mayoral Appeal which is an extension to 2nd Beccles Scout HQ. Another 2014 event I am looking forward to is the ‘Open Gardens’ which will involve lots of gardens around the

What is there for young people to do in Beccles? Young people in Beccles have various youth organisations they can join. We have the Army, Airforce and Sea Cadets as well as 2nd Beccles and 5th Beccles Scouts and the various Girl Guiding groups. We have Thirst Youth Café which is open at St Lukes church on a Friday and also have another associated group which meets on a Monday. We have a skateboard park by the common. We also have many ‘Wasps’ football teams, rugby teams, a cricket team, indoor and outdoor bowling and, breaking news, there are currently discussions taking place to establish a new town concert band which will be open to members’ young and older based on playing ability. If you are musically minded watch this space! What is it about the town that inspired you to become mayor? The most rewarding thing about being the town mayor is that I get to represent the town of Beccles in the Waveney Valley, in Suffolk and to the wider world. I have been to London as an invited guest to attend a reception at the House of Lords on behalf of Beccles. I have met some very interesting people who I would never have otherwise come into contact with and discovered many small, unsung organisations in the town which I never knew existed, but carry out vital work to make our community the wonderful and caring place it is. n

Earsham Hall, Bungay

Bungay Earsham Hall is one of the finest country mansion houses in Norfolk. It has a rich and varied history dating back in part to the 15th century. On evidence of old maps, Earsham Hall formerly consisted of three long timber-framed buildings set at right angles to eachother. Two of these remain today, although both were faced in brickwork in the early 17th century. The Hall was known to have an extensive deer park surrounding it from early times. The first owners on record were the Throckmorton family, and then Robert Gooch. It then passed to Leonard Gooch (probably his son) and finally to Leonard’s daughter Ann. Ann married a gentleman called John Buxton, who was an amateur architect, and in 1707 to 1710 he built the Queen Anne block (extension) adjoining the much earlier building. The brick façade was added after this so the Hall looked more in keeping with its different parts. The Earsham Hall Tearoom was established in 2000 and has gone from strength to strength as a destination for many hungry customers. Quality teas and coffees, delicious homemade cakes and scones and a variety of lunches and afternoon teas are all on offer, as well as some evenings when it opens for suppers. It is also used for smaller private events such as birthday parties, funeral gatherings and the like. To find out more go to www.earshamhall.co.uk or call 01986893423. INVESTING IN QUALITY with PJ Livesey The restoration and redevelopment of the former silk mill site at Bungay on the Norfolk/Suffolk border has proved to be spot-on for football coach Graham Purling. After 12 months of searching for the perfect property he has just invested in two apartments at Waterside Maltings, a scheme being built by the conservation developers, the PJ Livesey Group. Graham knows the site well as the stadium and open playing fields of Bungay Town FC where he coaches are just across the road. He said: “I had been looking for a buy-to-let property for more than a year but had not been able to find anything at an affordable price and of decent quality in the area. I live about five miles away so have followed the history of the silk mill site and had seen two other developers make a pigs ear of it, which was sad because the mill is such a lovely old building and an important local landmark. It needed someone like PJ Livesey to come along and do a proper job! I was very pleased when I saw the range of properties they are building here and how they are using their skills to re-use as much of the old buildings and materials as possible to retain character. I went along as soon as the scheme launched for sale and knew I had found the right investment.” Graham has bought two apartments, a one bed and a two bedroom unit, both to rent out. They are next to the distinctive mill building and are being built behind an original listed facade that has been retained. He said: “I am not a professional landlord by any means, we have a holiday home next door to our current house, but I think now is a good time to invest in property, especially in a scheme like Waterside which will be a one-off in a great location. Previously I had been looking at terraces and cottages and not really considered an apartment but these offer not only a lot of space and character but also brand new, top quality fittings and guarentees which means I won’t need to worry. I have spoken to local agents and believe the apartments will give a 7-8% yield which is much better than money in the bank. Bungay is a lovely town in an enviable position for commuters and I know demand is strong so will have little difficulty finding a good tenant and the apartments are safe and secure but full of character and very spacious.” Such is the quality of the development and the varied mix of properties, from one bedroom apartments to three storey town houses and big four bedroom family homes, that Waterside Maltings is attracting strong interest from a range of buyers. PJ Livesey will now be developing the second half of the site allowing the company to retain control over quality and design and consider the development of the scheme as a whole. The development is within walking distance of the picturesque village of Bungay and less than a half hour commute from the centre of Norwich, where PJ Livesey redeveloped the award winning Read Mills scheme on the Riverside. Graham said: “PJ Livesey has a good reputation for quality and detail and are not a standard housebuilder. Compared to other property I looked at I think these offer extremely good value for money and will be both a good investment and a lovely place to live.” For more information or to arrange a viewing call 01986892205. Despite its growing size and population, Stowmarket has retained much of its rural charm, boasting a variety of listed buildings along with the open-air Museum of East Anglian Life.

ocated at the geographical heart of rural Suffolk on the River Gipping, Stowmarket was originally an agricultural market town. Yet, the canalisation of the river in 1793 brought new prosperity and increased industry to the town. Nowadays, the old towpath forms an enjoyable footpath through the Gipping Valley from Stowmarket railway station all the way to the docks at Ipswich. The medieval heart of Stowmarket lies around St. Peter and St. Mary’s Church and in the area leading down to the riverbank. Today the town has 131 buildings listed by the Department of National Heritage as of special interest and one, the parish church, is classified as being of “exceptional interest”. Edward III granted the town a market charter in July 1347 and the market continues to serve local people every Thursday and Saturday. Although Stowmarket has changed a great deal during the second half of this century, it remains a lively and interesting town with a great deal to commend it to visitors. The excellent Museum of East Anglian Life, one of the UK’s leading open-air museums, provides a glimpse of rural life as it was, and shouldn’t be missed. Stowmarket restaurants offer a range of cuisine, from contemporary Italian at the stylish Infuse restaurant overlooking the picturesque River Gipping, to Chinese at the family friendly Chinese Chequers. For something a bit more British, The Old Counting House in neighbouring Haughley offers a menu that comprises both international and traditional dishes, whilst The Buxhall Crown just outside Stowmarket serves up highly rated food in a cosy 17th century building, complete with beamed features and an open fire. The Shepherd & Dog is a wonderful gastro pub/

restaurant serving ‘posh nosh’, set menus and bar food that has recently risen to fame for its Wagyu Beef Burgers. Made from Wagyu cattle from nearby Earl Stonham Farms, they are described as ‘the best beef in Britain’. The historic Verandah House, located in a Grade II listed Georgian building, is a wonderful guesthouse with seven rooms and great breakfasts, whilst the family-run Cedars Hotel on the edge of town serves meals both in its restaurant and its more relaxed bar lounge. n

W&M Smith

W&M Smith Please could you give us an overview of what your company does / offers? W & M Smith is a wholesale cash and carry of florists’ sundries and packaging materials. The florists’ sundries title covers a wide range of items. We stock the Smithers’ Oasis range in almost its entirety. Ribbons, glassware, artificial flowers, fruit and vegetables, dried materials ie. orange slices, cinnamon etc, spray paints, raffia and sisal, wires on a reel and lengths, decorative wires, wire wreath frames, floristry tools ie knives and scissors. For the bridal expert, beads, pearl pins, corsage bracelets, diamante sprays, ring cushions, bridesmaids dolly bags, table confetti, silk and dried rose petals. Tapes, glues etc. Cellophane, fabric wrap, organza, sleeves, bags, water pearls and water dye. Plastic, acrylic and galvanised containers. Church pedestals, church candles etc etc etc. The packaging title is really how I started out. This includes paper and polythene bags, tissue, paper and polythene carriers, refuse sacks, vacuum pouches, cellophane sweet bags, greeting card bags, gripseal bags, bubblewrap, egg boxes and trays, glass jam jars and bottles etc etc. But it does not really end there. The stock has increased during the trading years and also gone off into many different fields. We now stock supplies for the cake decorating trade including not only cake boards and boxes, but also equipment and tools used in sugar craft along with icing, colouring pastes and edible decorations. Another area catered for is disposable table ware, like napkins, table covers, plates, bowls, cutlery, cups and glasses. Also foil containers of various sizes and shapes. How long have you been in the business? W & M Smith started on 1st May 1981 selling paper and packaging materials to the small shops, eg Village post offices. Why did you get into the business? I had left school in July 1980 at only 16 years of age. I did not really know what I wanted to do as a career and attended the Suffolk College in Ipswich for a one year intensive secretarial course, which included the obvious shorthand and typewriting skills as well as accounts and business studies. Unknown to me at the time, all of this knowledge has proved very beneficial over the past 30 + years. In February 1981 my parents were speaking to a friend, who at that time had a floristry business. She had been let down with a delivery of paper bags and just said in passing that she needed to find a new supplier. Dad came home with this brainwave. As I had a strong interest in tennis coaching/officiating, I could start up in business selling paper bags and do the tennis as well. What a crazy idea! Please detail your beginnings from Mary Smith’s garden shed to the business today. For the next two months my father and I found suppliers from researching business directories

at the library. Many were not prepared to supply us as they only dealt in pallet quantities and large minimum orders. But those who did agree to us buying off them served us proud. Although some have now gone out of business most of those companies I still buy off today. So on 1st May 1981 W & M Smith was born. The first delivery was £300.00 worth of paper bags which were stored at my parents house on the landing. In the July I left college, in the September I past my driving test and bought my first van. In time the house became very full and Dad then built a little lean too shed on the back of the garage. That too was soon bursting at the seams and bags etc were slowly creeping into the house once more. The next step was for more expansion and Dad joined the house onto the garage. But W & M Smith still grew and that was soon to be too small. In 1988 a new premises was sought and W & M Smith started to trade from Moat Farm Barn, MiIddlewood Green. After 18 years successful trading, space again became an issue and we were on the move once more. Woodfarm Business Park, Stonham Aspal, was to be the next home, but things did not work out there and in September 2007, The Pightle Barn, Blacksmiths Lane, Middlewood Green, Stowmarket became the new location where we remain to this day. How does your business stay one step ahead of its competitors? W & M Smith has always been prepared to go that extra bit further to help out a customer, whether it be to source a new product or if we could not help another suppliers details would be found. Nothing is ever too small to help out with. We pride ourselves in the personal service we offer and go out of our way to help our customers out even if there is a very short timescale. You obviously work a lot in the wedding event / catering industry is this an area you wish to grow into? No. W & M Smith offer a range of goods for the event planners or caterers to use themselves. We do not wish to expand into the actual planning of events. Finally, what does the future hold for your company? If only we had a crystal ball, then this answer would be so easy. We have recently launched a web shop which is the way forward but a large amount of our stock needs to be actually seen as it is rather than from a picture. W & M Smith continues to grow and new ideas and stock are always on the horizon so although there are no concrete plans for expansion, but you just never know. Perhaps we should just say, “Watch this space”. The motto we started up with was “From tiny Pightle Barn, Middlewood Green, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 5EU. 01449711014. www. wandmsmith.co.uk.

Peterborough

oday’s highly productive agricultural landscape bears no resemblance to the Fens of prehistoric and medieval times. The city too has changed enormously, only with the flourishing of the abbey did a town develop at Peterborough and the last two centuries have seen its extraordinary growth. Peterborough began as a Saxon settlement. The Saxons built a village on the site of Peterborough called Medehamstede (meadow homestead) as it was originally known. Railway lines began operating locally during the 1840s, but it was the 1850 opening of the Great Northern Railway’s main line from London to York that transformed Peterborough from a market town to an industrial centre. Lord Exeter had opposed the railway passing through Stamford, so Peterborough, situated between two main terminals at London and Doncaster, increasingly developed as a regional hub. The modern-day city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire hides a wealth of history just waiting to be uncovered. When the daylight fades experience Peterborough’s nightlife. There are two theatres offering drama, ballet and concerts, the Key Theatre and the Cresset Theatre; a diverse selection of restaurants serving cuisine for every palate, cocktail bars and nightclubs open until the early hours. Where else could you experience a dragon boat race, beer festival, conker championships, cheese rolling, a straw bear parade, showcase cinema, or the famous Burghley Horse Trials. A special event can be a great excuse for planning a weekend away - or an added bonus to an existing break. Peterborough has events taking place throughout the year so there’s never a dull moment. From concerts and fireworks at a stately home, to a spectacular event at the East of England Showground. Then there are the ever-changing exhibitions at the numerous art galleries and city museums the place has to offer. Don’t miss the Peterborough

Peterborough

Festival, or local music events such as Peterborough Music Making or drama festivals in the nearby towns, or the famous Flower Parade. Whatever you may be looking for in a city, Peterborough has the perfect mix! From city centre heritage attractions to countryside walks, from watersports to modern art. Discover Peterborough’s history and visit their magnificent Norman Cathedral which provides the most beautiful backdrop to the city. Take a short stroll and be transported back in time at Peterborough Museum. Or just outside the city, visit Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre where you can meet some magnificent Shire Horses. Shopping in Peterborough is quite a pastime, in fact, you are spoilt for choice - 3 shopping centres, the City Market, independent stores, regular Farmers Markets and craft fairs. During the warmer months, dining can become an outside experience so that you can soak up the atmosphere of the city, while relaxing with a drink and a bite to eat. Peterborough Garden Park was conceived to meet the needs of a growing number of people interested in gardening and outdoor activities. This innovative retail and leisure destination combines the attributes of a traditional garden centre and an accessible retail scheme, with a mix of lifestyle retailers. n Ancient Roman and Saxon settlement, Olney is a charming town near the river Great Ouse, and is well connected to bigger towns such as Northampton, Bedford and Milton Keynes Central. Its history is full of notable events. During the English Civil War, it was the site of the Battle of Olney Bridge in 1643. After growing as a market and lace-making centre, during the 18th century it was also an important staging post for travellers, with 27 inns in the town by 1754. After surviving a great fire in 1854 and the Industrial Revolution, Olney is now a lively market town that has plenty to offer to both locals and visitors. Start by visiting its abundant cultural places and historic buildings, among which the 14th century Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is a highlight. Here the slave trader turned abolitionist John Newton served as curate. The 18th century house of poet William Cowper is also well worth checking out. With such a wide range of restaurants, cafés and pubs you’ll be spoiled for choice: take a break and enjoy British and international food, hot beverages

or traditional ales at the Bull Inn, The Two Brewers or the Much Ado Café – to name just a few top rated establishments. Wander off the High Street to find hidden gems such as Fountain Court and Rose Court, very popular courtyards full of places to eat and shop. Olney is home to a variety of independent shops, fashionable clothes boutiques and antiques emporiums, making for a truly unique shopping experience. You can’t miss a trip to one of the characterful markets, from the weekly Olney market to the monthly farmers market with locally grown or made produce. Above all, Olney is renowned for its annual Pancake Race, held on Shrove Tuesday. Legend has it that, back in 1445, a local woman, late for the Shriving service, ran to the church with the frying pan of pancakes that she was cooking still in hand. Nowadays, the women of Olney recreate the race by running from the market place to the parish church, holding a pan and wearing the typical apron and cap. In 1950 a junior race for the children of local schools was also established. The event is followed by the traditional Shriving service, prize giving and of course plenty of pancakes for everyone - part of the ancient ritual in preparation for the fasting of the Lent. n

HER, SPIKE JONZE

Simona Arcaro shares her selection of books and films to keep you entertained this month

OY J EN

From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature - and the risks - of intimacy in the modern world. The protagonist, Theodore, is a lonely writer who develops an unlikely relationship with a female voice produced by an intelligent operating system, designed to meet everyone’s needs. The film, greeted with widespread critical acclaim, stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde and Scarlett Johansson. THE FOREVER GIRL, ALEXANDER MCCALL SMITH The author of bestsellers No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Alexander McCall Smith, gives us a new touching, heart-breaking novel about love and friendship. This is the story of Clover and her relationship with James, from the naivety of childhood to the complications of the adult world. Love at first sight, faded love, unrequited love, in all its shades and phases love can shape a life. WINTER’S TALE, AKIVA GOLDSMAN As stated in the film poster, “this is not a true story, this is true love”. The film, by the

director of A Beautiful Mind, Akiva Goldsman, is an interesting match of drama, fantasy and of course romance, telling the unusual story of a burglar who falls in love with the young mistress of the house he’s attempting to rob. The cast boasts names like Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe and Will Smith. CUT DEAD - A DI CHARLOTTE SAVAGE NOVEL, MARK SENNEN Cut Dead is the fast-paced crime chiller from self-published sensation Mark Sennen. Following Touch and Bad Blood, the story features Detective Inspector Charlotte Savage and her team based in Plymouth, Devon. If you are a fan of thriller and police procedural, get ready to explore in the deep the madness of a serial killer’s mind. Simply breath-taking. DRACULA, COLE HADDON The British-American 2013 TV series about one of the most notorious fictional gothic character in modern literature is finally available on DVD (season 1). Dracula, by creator Cole Haddon and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, introduces the count as he arrives in London posing as an American entrepreneur willing to bring modern science to Victorian society. The timeless classic is back with all its dark charm. ■
