iners at one of the UK’s most famous British buildings will get the first opportunity to fall in love with Great British cuisine again as Browns re-opens in Cambridge. The facelift will provide an update to the interior of the historic building whilst still maintaining its famous heritage. Browns Cambridge sees the launch of a new British inspired menu including Coastal Crab and fresh Mussel Linguine with Sea Purslane and Samphire, Scottish Venison with fondant and poached pear and Lancashire Hot Pot with Sweetbreads and Kidneys served on the side, which gives visitors to Cambridge a new reason to rediscover everything they love about Great British cuisine. The drinks and cocktails are also made from British ingredients from English sparkling wine to vodka made from British cows milk. The provenance of everything down to the crockery and furnishings have been carefully considered and huge efforts have been made to ensure that even these finishing touches are made and designed in Britain. itzwilliam Museum has been re-stored back to its original 1848 beauty. The restoration of the 1848 founders building of the Fitzwilliam Museum has been completed in time for the Tour de France going past on the 7th of July. The conservation project funded by the University of Cambridge restored the plasterwork ceiling of the historic façade which was damaged from leaking water and returned the railings to their original colours. The fine detail of lotuses, grapes, corn, melons and exotic fruit under the roof was tarnishing black. These have been restored to their original pristine white and are now available to see for free as the Museum has no admission charge. Further details of the re-launch will be announced at www.eastlife.co.uk eastlife.co.uk | 15

AROUND THE REGION Chaplin’s Circus comes to Cambridge

C

haplin’s Circus been surrounded by a whirl of press when it was discovered owner Gary Stocker gave up his six figure salary as a lawyer to become a human cannon ball, and now the spectacular show is coming to Cambridge for just over a week on the 22nd July, at the Cambridge Rugby Club. Chaplin’s Circus is the brainchild of three entertainers with decades of experience in the world of performance. Their aim is simple – to provide their audience with a brand new and special circus show as well as a host of other, community based offers to create a rounded, family friendly experience. In addition to their spellbinding circus show, Chaplin’s Circus also offers not-for-profit circus skills workshops for local children as well as partnerships with animal welfare charities thanks to their strict ‘No Circus Animals’ policy. The show goes far beyond the usual collection of magic, juggling and acrobatics, weaving their astounding acts into an involving, pantomime-like narrative set in the 1920s. Taking the audience back to 1924, the show tells the story of a Chaplin’s Circus who have asked aviator Orville Wright to save their ailing fortunes by creating the world’s first ‘Human Cannonball’. With the big top rammed full and an audience ready to see the premiere of the new attraction, the excitement backstage in tangible. Everything rides on the success of this first performance. But, lurking in the shadows is a man who will do anything to ensure the circus fails. In an era where professional rivalry runs rife, sabotage looms around every corner. Will Chaplin’s Circus survive the dark intentions of those who want to see them fall? You can find out in this edge of your seat show. With their show travelling the length and breadth of the UK, Chaplin’s Circus don’t just want to entertain

their audience, they want to teach them too. In each area they visit, the circus company will be offering not-for-profit workshops to teach local children some of their circus skills, from juggling clubs to basic acrobatics – and maybe even a magic trick or two. The family friendly ethos continues into the show content. In addition to the decision not to use animals in their show, Chaplin’s Circus has also seen recent research suggesting that a high proportion of people find clowns inherently frightening. As a result, there will be no clowns included in the show either. It’s been many years since the UK has seen The Human Cannonball in the flesh, and Chaplin’s Circus are bringing it back as the spectacular finale to their innovative show. In order to allow for the high flying close to the show, the Chaplin’s big top is particularly big – one of the largest circus tents in the UK in fact! This is an event not to be missed! www.chaplinscircus.com

The Ship at Dunwich Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship at Dunwich isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village, surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port, claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves, while we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things they are always happy to provide. Real ales, home-cooked food and a crackling fire. Comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. An enormous garden, dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use The Ship as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn extends the warmest of welcomes. Wine and Dine Let us help you overcome your fear of the wine list

W

hether you love it or loathe it, its evitable that at some point you will have to make the daunting decision of choosing a wine either for yourself or someone else. You don’t want it to taste like vinegar but then again will your taste buds really tell the difference if you spend an extra £10 on a bottle? Many of us are quite uneducated when it comes to wine, but learning about it can be a straightforward adventure that will deepen your appreciation for both wine and winemakers. If you fancy learning how to smell and slurp your way to a good bottle there is no place quite like East Anglia. The region is full of established vineyards and wine schools.

Vineyards

Chilford Hall Vineyard is set in the rolling hills of the Cambridgeshire countryside and is one of the oldest commercial vineyards in the UK. Established in 1972 by the late Sam Alper, the first vintage was produced in 1974. The vineyard expanded over the last 40 years and is now an 18 acre vineyard producing an award-winning variety of still and sparkling wines. Chilford offers visitors the exciting opportunity to visit the vineyard and learn how English wine is made from grape to glass. The tour is suitable for those with little or no knowledge of the winemaking process as well as connoisseurs. The guided wine tour commences with a walk to the vineyard and an introduction to winemaking with an examination of the vines. Next stop is the winery, where fermentation and bottling takes place, and the tour finishes with wine tasting in the bistro. Tours must be pre-booked and take place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays. Prices start from £12.50 per person. In the heart of Stour Valley in Suffolk is Giffords Hall Vineyard. It was established as long as 25 years ago on a very old site on a glacial riverbed. The vineyard has been family owned since it was brought in 2004 by husband and wife team Guy and Linda Howard. eastlife.co.uk | 39

LIFESTYLE

The Giffords Hall label was established in 2009 and the business has seen production grow from 2000 – 20,000 bottles distributed locally through Thos Peatling, high end restaurants and farm shops and also through top London wine merchants Laytons, and Bibendum as well as some of the range in Waitrose and John Lewis Branches. Giffords Hall offer both unaccompanied and private tours of the vineyard, where groups and individuals have the opportunity to see the vines and learn about the growing process. The tours can also include wine tasting and the option of buffet lunch.

Choosing your wine

If you would rather take the classroom approach to learning wine then visit The Inspired Wine School. Launched this year the school is a partnership between The Woburn Wine Company and Inspired Gourmet Cookery School and is based at their premises in a converted granary in Broughton, just at the east side of Milton Keynes. The schools aim is to make learning about wine an enjoyable experience and increase confidence in choosing the right bottle. There are three different courses to choose from including scratching the surface, overcoming the fear of wine and new world vs old world. Courses start from £40 per person. When the sun shines wine really does come into its own. There’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of wine with friends and family at a BBQ or dining al fresco with a bottle on chill. To make it easy to pick a wine for your social gatherings this summer Andrew Baker, a wine buyer for Virgin Wines gave his advice for selecting the

perfect tipple: “As the weather heats up, there are certain styles of wine we would recommend choosing. As food is often lighter in the summer months, meals will go well with younger wines, particularly fresh whites that can be chilled,” he begun. “A delicious example is Les Hauts de L’Olivier Sauvignon Blanc 2013, a vibrant wine which is packed full of juicy fruit and begs to be enjoyed al fresco. Alternatively, look for a dry Riesling, such as Hans Lang Rheingau Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2012, which will be great with a Chinese stir fry or Thai currries. It has a good acidity and will perfectly cut through Asian ingredients such as soy sauce, which are popular in summer. “However, don’t discount a young red, as these will go beautifully with the red meat enjoyed at a barbecue – consider Cirque de Navacelles Reserve d’Heric 2012, a super drinkable mix of raspberry and kirsch on the nose, black cherries and damson on the palate. “Furthermore, bubbles are the perfect summer treat, whether that’s a bottle of Prosecco, Champagne, or sparkling Shiraz for something a bit different!” For dining out this summer Andrew gave his expert advice: “When in a restaurant, don’t become confused by a huge wine list. If you’re picking a meaty option such as a steak, or a stew, a Shiraz or Grenache will work well, while a lighter meal, perhaps chicken or white fish, calls for something like a Chardonnay or Gavi, such as Elisa Gavi 2013. “Most restaurants will have someone on their team who knows the wine list back to front – don’t be afraid to ask them for advice, it’s what they’re paid for!”

Learn the art of wine tasting By Emma Morgan

I

admit that as I stand in front of the rows upon rows of wine at my local supermarket or study the wine list in a restaurant I quite often have absolutely no idea what I’m looking at. Cheap to me screams vile, yet I just can’t justify spending a huge amount of money on something that will generally be drunk by a group of gossiping girls. So I hit the middle mark - something not cheap, not expensive but looks like it could be quite tasty from the picture on the label! With that said when I was offered the opportunity to visit the East Anglian Wine School I jumped at the chance. The East Anglian Wine School was founded by Neil Bull in 2013. He launched the school following a high-flying career in the city and decided to swap his love of the business world for his passion for fine wines. Since its launch the East Anglian Wine School has been spreading its knowledge of wine across the region. There are a number of informative and enjoyable courses available suitable for beginners, wine-lovers keen to learn more about this fascinating and complex subject, together with those in the wines and spirits trade and the hospitality and catering industry. During my visit I tasted five different wines; two

white, two red and one Champagne, accompanied with a selection of bread and cheese. Neil explained each wine carefully and made the art of wine tasting a real joy and fun experience. I left feeling extremely knowledgeable – I’ve since been sharing my new found wisdom every time I drink a glass of wine much to the annoyance of my friends and family. Neil shared his advice and thoughts, “wine is like a novel,” he said, “It can only be appreciated once it has been explained.” “One important thing to remember is a good wine is a balanced wine.” Neil went on to explain how a wine should look in the glass, how to smell and taste the different flavours and recommended which was best for various dishes. The East Anglian Wine School also offers private wine tastings in your own home – a sure way to impress if you’re hosting a dinner party, as well as hen dos and home visits. Each tasting will be personally tailored to your needs and requirements, and Neil will be happy to assist with any specific requests for the tasting. Overall a very informative and enjoyable afternoon – a must try! Tel: 01371 267260 www.eastanglianwineschool.co.uk

Walking Trails

There are some fantastic walking routes that cut right through the heart of the Broads, such as the Wherryman’s Way. Meandering along the River Yare between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, this scenic trail was named after the iconic wherry vessels, which were once commonplace on the Broads. There are a number of both short and long walks along this Trail, with way-markers to guide you to sculptures and information panels, which tell the tales of days gone by and the wherries and wherrymen that once plied the waterways. Alternatively, you could explore the Weavers Way, which will take you from Cromer on the North Norfolk coast, through the northern part of the Broads, to Great Yarmouth on the east coast. Weavers’ Way offers a rich contrast of scenery, from the woodlands and mixed farmland of north Norfolk to the grazing marshes beside the rivers Thurne, Bure and Yare.

With a large outdoor deck you can enjoy a refreshing drink and tasty homemade food as you watch the world go by. The Norfolk Broads is one of the most beautiful areas of East Anglia and without a doubt worth a trip this summer.

Where to stay

If you’d prefer to stay overnight on dry land but still want to experience the very best of the broads then why not opt for a weekend break at the Waveney River Centre. The park is on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with the Broads and a nature reserve on its doorstep. So much more than your average holiday park, guests can relax in a luxury lodge or ‘glamp’ in an Escape Pod handcrafted by Broads boat builders. Measuring 14ft x 10ft including a decked porch, the ‘Escape’ pods are ideal for short breaks and holidays all year round, with their double glazed doors and window and electric heater. The pods are wrapped in foil-backed multi-layer insulation, to help keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. Inside, the pods feature a full size double bed above two single beds, a Freeview TV, LED lights, a double socket and loads of storage space. The pods are an extremely short walk from the five-star shower and wash up facilities. You’ll also find a number of luxury lodges with hot

Another PPI Scandal PPI can always be somewhat of a minefield; luckily consumer expert Dean Dunham gave us his top tips for understanding how to make a claim

I

f you have received a PPI payout from the Lloyds Banking Group (which includes Halifax and Black Horse), Barclays or RBS/ Natwest you may have been short-changed and therefore may be in line for a further payout. Here’s what you need to know: Why is there a further claim? These banks have taken advantage of a loophole that allows for something called “alternative redress”, the result obviously being that the bank pays out less and as a consequence your pay-out is reduced. The loophole has to do with those customers who had purchased single-premium PPI policies, where the entire cost of the insurance was paid upfront and added to the loan. Instead of returning all of the customers’ money back, the bank was deducting the cost of a cheaper, regular premium policy from the pay-out, citing the ‘alternative redress’ rules outlined by the UK financial regulator. This means that they were treating these claims as if they’d just been sold the wrong type of PPI rather than completely mis-sold PPI. If it’s a loophole how can I claim? Whilst providers are within their rights to offer comparative redress under the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) rules, they must only do so “fairly” and consistently. In these cases where the banks have made an assumption about whether the customer would have purchased the cheaper option it is likely that they fall outside of being ‘fair’.

How do I know if I have a claim? Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group and RBS/Natwest have all confirmed that they took advantage of the ‘comparative redress’loophole during the following periods: •Lloyds Banking Group - since February 2013 •Barclays - between October 2012 and October 2013 •RBS/Natwest - since early 2013 So if you received a pay-out from one of the above banks during the applicable period and your offer letter contained the words “alternative redress” or “comparative redress”you may have a claim. If in addition to this you can categorically state that you would not have purchased a cheaper policy your chances of having a claim dramatically increase. I think I have a claim, what next? Dig out the letter that you received from the bank when they confirmed that they were going to compensate you for the PPI being mis-sold and see what it says, as described above. If you cannot find it contact your bank and ask them if you

were given alternative redress when they paid out your PPI compensation. If they confirm that this was the case say that you wanted a full refund and demand that they deal with this. Alternatively, if they say that they did not give you alternative redress write to them and ask the question and say that you want the answer in writing. If they refuse or fail to confirm if you were given alternative redress or if they confirm that they did but refuse to compensate you the next step is to make a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (which is free and easy to do). Before making a complaint to the financial ombudsman it is important that you firstly give the bank at least eight weeks to respond and deal with your complaint. After this period of time you can proceed with your complaint by logging on to www.financialombudsman.org.uk/consumer/ complaints.htm or call 0800 023 4567. How to slice the cost of your wedding cake... Baking your own wedding cake can be a rewarding experience and a great way of cutting your confectionary costs

W

hether you want classic or an over the top statement, professionals bakers Racheal and Rebecca, part of the Dr.Oetker Even Better Baking Team give their expert advice that could be just the icing on the cake for your wedding baking dilemma! “As part of the Even Better Baking Team for Dr. Oetker we get to see lots of inspirational baking ideas especially when it comes to homemade wedding cakes and have some fantastic ideas of how to help you reduce costs when planning to bake your own wedding cake! “A key trend that is becoming more popular are “naked” cakes which have no icing on the outside and just buttercream between the layers so less really is more! “Using minimal icing on your cakes looks really effective especially when decorated with fresh fruit and flowers. However layering a cake can be a skill in itself therefore our top tip before you cut your sponge for layering is to make a mark on the side of your cake using a knife. Then when you layer the sponges together after adding the buttercream or frosting you just need to line the marks up to achieve a perfectly level cake! “Furthermore why not decorate your cake with rose petals and crystallise them by brushing the petals with egg white and dusting them with sugar to add a sweet but delicate flavour to your cakes. “Another great tool to use if icing your own wedding cake and keep costs down is to use Dr. Oetker Regal-Ice Ready Rolled Icing. Regal-ice is conveniently pre- rolled so it is ready to cover your cake, which makes icing your cake much quicker and easier. “If you want to add a beautiful shimmer lustre to your iced cakes then why not try using Dr. Oetker Gold and Silver Shimmer spray. Just spray directly on to your iced cakes to create an eye catching, beautiful finish.

“For a truly show stopping wedding cake we love the Hundreds & Thousands cake. Simply cover your sponge with a thin layer of buttercream and roll the sides in a tray of Hundreds & Thousands. Not only is it a great talking point when the wedding guests arrive but also only a few jars of Hundreds & Thousands are needed to decorate a 20cm sponge cake. “Baking a cake for such a special occasion does not need to be daunting, carefully following the recipe and weighing the ingredients accurately will ensure you produce the best results possible. Ideally if you have space in your freezer make your cake sponges a few weeks in advance and freeze them until a few days before you ice or decorate them as this will help save you time and will create less panic before the big day! “ Mixers at the ready…good luck! Finding the one Choosing your dream venue is just the beginning…

A

fter the initial yes, a brides mind can often begin to run wild with wedding planning but before you start picking your dress and colour scheme, finding the perfect venue is a must. With so much choice it can sometimes be a daunting task, but stick to careful planning and sensible decision making and you’ll soon be saying your ‘I dos’ in the location of your dreams. Location, location, location When deciding which venues to view its important to think about the overall theme of your wedding. Do you want an elegant and formal affair or a relaxed, garden party? Some venues can help reflect your style perfectly without the need for over the top décor. Location is vital; make a decision on the area you would like to get married and then search for venues within that region.

Viewing your venue Go as a couple to your first viewing. Not only will it build excitement but also it’s a good opportunity for you to both choose a venue that suits your relationship and personalities. Ask lots of questions. No matter how small or silly of a matter it might seem, if its important to you then ask – the wedding co-ordinator will be happy to help, we promise! Guests Make a rough estimate of the number of guests attending your wedding, both day and night. Ensure the venue will be able to accommodate. Take into thought accessibility for guests to get to and from your wedding venue – the last thing you want is stranded guests at the end of the day! Speak to the wedding planner about overnight accommodation available.

Food The wedding breakfast is a big part of your day. Choose a venue that is able to cater for your tastes and preferences. Many venues now offer a range of cuisine from sit down three course meals to buffet. There are even BBQ options with hog roast, which is perfect for a summer wedding. Money matters Perhaps one of the most important aspects of choosing a venue is money. Agree a budget beforehand and stick to it. It’s easy to get swept away in the moment but you don’t want to blow your entire budget on the venue and not have enough for the dress of your dreams! If you find a venue you love but can’t quite afford it, speak with the wedding co-ordinator to see if you can arrange a special package. Buffet and BBQ options are sometimes cheaper than a full sit down meal! eastlife.co.uk | 55

To the bathroom and beyond We shine the spotlight on this season’s emerging bathroom trends

Image: Catchpole and Rye

T

he bathroom is perhaps one of the most vital rooms within a family home but can somewhat be overlooked when it comes to interior design. From lavish spa like havens to simple low maintenance shower rooms, it can be easier and less expensive than you might think to bring your bathroom up to date. Consumer trends emerge, disappear, and fluctuate in popularity each year. Fortunately, the top names in bathroom products are well positioned with solutions already on the market or in the pipeline, making it simple for installers to react to the evolving needs of the customer. Jo Axtell, Head of Brand at iflo, whom have a number of stockists throughout East Anglia, shared her knowledge for choosing the right look for your bathroom: “Maximising the space and layout of a bathroom continues to be the most pressing concern for the majority of homeowners, with the average bathroom size not much larger than a super king-size bed. Combining these layout challenges with the additional demand of creating a second bathroom, commonly in a cloakroom or as an en-

suite, makes the role of compact sanitary ware all the more apparent. “The market has responded with an increase in choice and variety when it comes to bathroom furniture. Modular ranges are fast becoming the furniture of choice, due to the flexibility and range of storage options they provide. Often wall hung or modular pieces can provide a greater illusion of space. Many high-quality options also feature hardwearing finishes, soft-close hinges, and glass shelving to ensure durability as well as providing a contemporary look.” Jo advised what should be done to make the most of small spaces: “Compact units which are specifically designed for restricted bathrooms or cloakrooms, provide a simple solution for installers faced with a challenging specification. “Space saving options such as shower-baths, have become a staple feature of most bathroom suites. These are now recognised by end-users as a fantastic solution for a smaller room, providing the best of both worlds and a bathing experience that isn’t impacted by the limitations of the space.” eastlife.co.uk | 59

HOME & GARDEN

If you are looking to update your bathroom but don’t want to the expense of a full suite, simple changes such as adding new items or upgrading your taps can make a huge difference. Plants are a simple and effective method of adding vibrancy and tangible life to your bathroom. There are a great selection of both faux and real plants available that can create an instant transformation. Updating your taps can significantly make a difference to the whole space. David Cole, sales director at Perrin & Rowe, whom specialise in quality bathrooms, advised: “Taps should be given due consideration as they really do affect the look of the room as a whole. “Purchasing a new tap is a great way for homeowners to freshen up the look of their bathroom if they don’t have the time or inclination to totally overhaul the space, and opting for superior brassware products shows attention to detail, which makes the entire space feel more luxurious. “Beautifully designed and crafted brassware is a really worthy investment that will change the whole dynamic of a room for the better.” Of late, bathrooms have begun to embrace the traditional aspects of design such as Victorian, deco or Edwardian inspired sanitary ware. You’ll find collections featuring cast iron baths and an array of antique inspired furniture more popular than ever before. Bathroom windows are also getting a make over with many homes saying goodbye to the roller blind and opting for indulgent shutters. Shutters are great for creating clever lighting, privacy and a relaxing ambience. Santa Fe Shutters have recently launched a brand new collection of Wooden Venetian blinds to complement its shutter range, which offers a wide choice of shutters including the popular ‘Tier on Tier’ shutters, ideal for creating a relaxing bathroom you’ll never want to leave! Santa Fe Shutters have stockists available within Sudbury, Suffolk, Hackford, Norfolk and Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Making a splash How to create an oasis in your garden

T

here is nothing better than the sound of water trickling in the garden. Water features are an easy way to bring relaxation and tranquillity to your home. Sometimes the most subtle of features can be the most effective – take a look at our top picks‌ Bamboo fountain Perfect for smaller gardens or balconies, a bamboo water feature embraces a little of the indoors and out, creating a calming serenity. The fountain can be a real DIY project by reusing a bowl shaped plant pot, purchasing a pump, clear hose and various lengths of bamboo cuts tied with garden twine. Birdbath fountain Bring a little wildlife to the garden with a beautiful babbling birdbath. Most large garden centres will feature a range of birdbath fountains. For an on trend look, using an old millstone is perfect for achieving a courtyard effect and will work for both large and smaller gardens. Most reputable centres stock fountain pumps and liner tubs and will be able to advise the essential items needed if you would like to create the look yourself.

The perfect pond A pond is a great addition to any garden but getting the aesthetics and positioning correct is vital for creating a mini-oasis. Make sure your chosen location is low lying but above the water table. Ensure the pond can be seen from several different vantage points and take into consideration any nearby trees or large shrubs as roots can cause damage. Size is everything when it comes to building your pond. The minimum surface area of any mixed pond should be around 30-35sq ft (2.8-3.25sq m), or preferably 50sq ft (4sq m). A minimum surface area of 150-160 sq ft (14-15sq m) is preferable for Koi ponds. There are plenty of molded ponds are available in a variety of sizes, colours and materials to suit all circumstances. However it is worth investing in a robust pond that will last and provide years of enjoyment! eastlife.co.uk | 65

ow firmly surrounded by summer splendour it becomes harder to tear ourselves away from the abundance of beautiful greens, golden yellows, and cornflower blues, which the season brings. None the less, there are shows and exhibitions, throughout the country that will further enrich these long hot summer days. So seek some shelter, in our wonderful regional galleries, and treat yourself to a further visual feast of colour, texture and thought provoking art. My personal choice this month lies in the town and county of Bedford. The Eagle Gallery are hosting “Encounters – with Famous Artworks”, their first themed exhibition of the year. With works from around forty of its different cooperative members, it promises to be a truly eclectic collection. Initiated by Bedforshire painter, Les Miller, each member artist has produced a piece of his or her own creation, inspired by a famous work of art. “Its terribly exciting. Each artist is working in response to a piece of art that has moved and inspired them greatly. It is not a case of simply copying something but allowing yourself to be creative through the influence of a work that has such power.” – Cooperative member and artist, Mike Townesend. Focusing on “Portrait of Ambroise Vollard”, by Pablo Picasso, Mike has painted a self-portrait based on his interpretation of this masterpiece. This

dark and somehow, quietly volatile work, manages to be both imposing and imploding, simultaneously. Mike’s portrait portrays both shyness and coiled courage, capturing the multifaceted complexions of the human character. Many famous works have inspired this group of committed Bedfordshire artists. Look out for John Constable’s “The Corn Field” and ceramics borne out of the influence of, geometric abstract, painter Piet Mondrian. You are invited to browse and see how many famous artworks you recognise from behind the guise of these new canvases and compositions. Each piece will be accompanied by a statement from the artist giving details about the original famous artwork and the inspiration the artist took from this work. Opening on Saturday the 19th of July, this exhibition and sale of works, runs until Saturday the 16th of August. Join the artists for a browse and warm welcome at this unique and original cooperative gallery. Fine Art student has brush with the Mayor

W

hen University Campus Suffolk (UCS) student Steve Shiells was asked to collaborate with an outside agency as part of his BA (Hons) Fine Art studies, he decided to go straight to the top. As part of the Professional Practice module, students were tasked with producing a piece of artwork for an external partner on a commercial basis, and mature student Steve decided to approach the outgoing Mayor of Ipswich, Cllr Hamil Clarke, with a proposal to paint his portrait to commemorate the end of his term in office. Steve has long had a passion for drawing and painting life, which led him to preferring portraiture for this collaboration, and when he heard of the proposal Cllr Clarke was happy to oblige. The portrait, painted in oil on canvas, has been created in a contemporary style and is different to the traditional images of the Mayor that are often seen. This more relaxed image perfectly captures the end of Cllr Clarke’s term of office. Cllr Clarke, who is now Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year, said: “I was a little apprehensive about seeing myself captured in portrait form but I was delighted to see the result. Steve has captured a relaxed looking me – and that is exactly what I am … most of the time!” The final painting, which was produced in oil and acrylic on canvas from a series of photographs, was unveiled recently at a special session with the Mayor.

he sun’s shining outside, and inside the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds, the sky-painted ceiling is also lovely and blue! The house lights are still firmly on, as the theatre remains busy with productions throughout the summer. This month sees an interesting mix of classic and modern. Kicking off the month is the Globe Theatre on Tour, with their production of Shakespeare’s King Lear (8-12 July). Starring Joseph Marcell (known for his role as Geoffrey in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and for his many knockout Shakespearean performances with The Globe) as King Lear, this tale of divisions and false values promises to be as heartrending and spellbinding as ever. For those interested in the lighter things in life, local comic, prankster and bath-tub sailor Tim FitzHigham will be bounding onstage with his show The Gambler (19 July) which takes a look at some of the greatest gambles, bizarrest bets and weirdest wagers in history – worryingly, quite a few of them happened in this area! This show follows on from his sell-out Flanders & Swann evening at the Theatre Royal. Any show by a man who has sailed across the English Channel in a bath tub has got to be worth seeing! Returning to the classical in two senses, Chamber Opera Chicago bring their new musical adaptation of Austen’s Persuasion to the stage (22 – 23 July). Us-

And then for some more Fringe Theatre, local company Menagerie, bring their show Swimming to the Theatre Royal for an exclusive preview (24 July), before it shoots off to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. Telling the tale of three teenagers from the Isle of Wight, this is a bittersweet comedy about grief, growing up, and the paralysing pressure to “be somebody”.

A

major new exhibition of work depicting the coastline and rivers of Suffolk is now on at the Ipswich Art School Gallery this summer. Tidal Margins 3 runs until 7 September at the Ipswich Art School Gallery in High Street. “Tidal Margins 3 is the culmination of three years’ work by artists, photographers and writers who share a passion for the coast and its tidal estuaries,” said exhibition organiser, artist Jennifer Hall. “The show will take you on a journey from Shingle Street to Southwold, and from Lowestoft to Felixstowe. We have been out in all weathers and at all times of the year. Being so close to the landscape gives the work energy

and vibrancy, and a tangible sense of place. I hope visitors will feel as inspired to explore the Suffolk coast as we have.” The show is complemented by Ipswich Museum’s remarkable bird and geology collections, which connect directly with work in the exhibition. During the exhibition, Tidal Margins writers and artists are offering an inspiring series of art and writing workshops for children and adults. Many of the workshops are offered as free drop-in sessions and are sponsored by Touching the Tide , a Heritage-Lotteryfunded landscape project. Amazing Aldeburgh Discover coastal charm in Aldeburgh

A

ldeburgh is a striking town found on the unspoiled East Suffolk Coast. Blessed with breathtaking scenery and an array of charming historic features, the seaside town is one of the most popular Suffolk towns offering everything you need for an inspiring and relaxing break. The town’s history is inextricably linked to the changes time has wrought to the coastal map. It was once an important Tudor port but the River Alde silted up, taking its toll on the town’s fortunes, and coastal erosion swept away the heart of its old town. Some historic buildings have survived the centuries, such as 400year old Moot Hall (now home to Aldeburgh’s museum), a Norman Church and a martello tower. Aldeburgh had to wait until the 19th Century fashion for beach and craze for sea air brought back visitors in quantity, establish-

ing it as a popular resort, and so it remains to this day. Attractions Famous for being the home of composer Benjamin Britten, Aldeburgh is proud of its musical heritage with its renowned music festival taking place each summer. For weekend seadogs it has a very active yacht club and teaches sailing to juniors and adults. There are also two popular golf courses, all-weather tennis courts, and, of course, excellent bathing. Aldeburgh’s strong local community shares activities and knowledge with the visitor, providing poetry and arts and craft residential courses. The pretty high street has craft, food and antiques shops, reflecting local passions, as well as a myriad of pubs and an independent cinema.

Places to eat The town’s fish and chip shop has been owned by the Cooney family since the 1970’s and was described by The Times as ‘possibly the finest on the East Coast’. What better way to end an active day than with a portion of fish and chips? Perhaps one of the most famous fish and chip shops in the country, prepare yourself for a queue on sunny days! The White Lion Hotel on Aldeburgh’s seafront; eat at their informal sea facing bar or enjoy fine dining at Restaurant 1563. The White Lion, Market Cross Place 01728 452720 You could also try the awardwinning 152 Aldeburgh, a sunny restaurant near the centre of town, with an enticing menu. The chef here has worked with Delia Smith, and Ruth and David Watson. 152 High Street. 01728 454594

Stunning Southwold Fall in love with this charming coastal town

S

outhwold lies in the centre of an area of great natural beauty – a haven for the walker, the naturalist, and the birdwatcher but even if your not a naturelover you’ll find it difficult not to fall in love with this charming coastal town. Situated on a hill that gently rises from the Blyth Valley, the town is virtually an island, being surrounded by the River Blyth to the south and Buss Creek to the north. This has enabled Southwold to retain its old world charm. The dramatic coastline and the town’s beautiful architecture make it a popular attraction throughout the year. In the summer, Southwold’s sandy beaches are a huge draw and out of season some its most charming elements can be enjoyed – cosy pub lunches, isolated walks or a quiet browse in its many antiques shops. Attractions In the town centre there’s an exciting selection of interesting and independent shops, selling

antiques, crafts and gifts. There’s also a variety of art galleries, boutiques and jewellers scattered around the town. To discover something of Southwold’s maritime heritage visit the Sailors’ Reading Room, on East Cliff overlooking the sea, where the exhibits include ship models, figureheads and early photographs of past seafaring local heroes. Southwold’s gleaming white lighthouse stands 101 feet above the town. Its warning beacon can be seen for 17 miles out to sea. Visitors who climb the winding lighthouse stairs are rewarded with fantastic views. The Southwold Railway was a narrow gauge railway plying between Halesworth and Southwold from 1879 to 1929. The Southwold Railway Trust can take you on an entertaining and instructive all-day trip on an historic 1950s bus - “Olive” to see what is left of the railway, including surviving trackbed and track, the station sites at Hales-worth, Wenhaston, Blythburgh, Walberswick and

Southwold. Tours of the railway and museum are available throughout the summer. The Southwold Railway Shop, 27 High Street, Southwold IP18 6AS. 07972 013804 Places to eat As you’d expect, first class seafood can be found in the town’s many fine restaurants and pubs, most of which serve ales brewed by the local – and world famous – Adnams Sole Bay Brewery. The Adnams stamp is everywhere and reflected in the cluster of great pubs: Sole Bay Inn, Lord Nelson, Harbour Inn and King’s Head. There are a variety of lovely places to eat in and around Southwold, from little cafes, interesting pubs to gourmet restaurants and hotels. Right on the water’s edge The Harbour Inn is a traditional old Fisherman’s pub steeped in history and old Southwold charm. It hosts two wood panelled, snug and cosy bars which are unusually on two levels, which adds to the character. Tel: 01502 722381 eastlife.co.uk | 141

ADVERTORIAL

SUTHERLAND HOUSE

IN SOUTHWOLD PURCHASED Andy continued: “We continue to cook some of the best seafood in East Anglia and everything we do in the kitchen is about serving the most sustainable, seasonal, local produce, which is fresh from our farmers, fishermen and friends. Many people claim this but we actually deliver. I have specialised throughout my career in improving businesses by concentrating on the product, service and reputation and I am more excited about this than any other before. But I do it in a different way to Gordon Ramsey!” A bright future has been secured for one of the regions premier seafood restaurants. Sutherland House Hotel and Seafood Restaurant, one the oldest and most important buildings in Southwold dating back to 1455, has been bought by Andy Rudd who has been General Manager at Sutherland House for five years. Andy Rudd, the new proprietor of Sutherland House is very upbeat about the future. He said, at the launch of the new era for the Hotel and Restaurant: “We have very ambitious plans for all elements of the business for the long-term. All the staff have been retained and importantly, all the chefs are staying. The feedback from customers has been extremely positive. We have made significant changes to the garden area and there are more structural upgrades planned.”

The bedrooms at Sutherland have recently undergone an imaginative overhaul. Two particular features are a sleigh bed under a 1660 pargetted ceiling and a huge double-ended slipper bath set in front of an historic fireplace. Come and find out more about the new regime by ringing 01502 724544. The restaurant is listed in the Sunday Telegraph 150 Best Restaurants in the UK and in the 2014 Good Food Guide. www.sutherlandhouse.co.uk
