Holding back the years Not ready for retirement just yet? Larry Lamb offers his top tips on holding back the years

V

eteran actor Larry Lamb, 67, has had a roller-coaster life and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down just yet. He shares his top tips for keeping joints in shape and living life to the full – whatever your age.

you age is harder than when you were in your 20s, but I make an effort to do some physical activity every morning as it keeps me feeling my best. Nothing too strenuous: half an hour of core muscle exercises followed by half an hour on the exercise bike. Sets me up for the day! Tip 2. Supplement your diet

Tip 1. Keep in shape There’s no way I could sit around doing nothing – and luckily I’m in a job where I don’t have to retire so long as I can keep myself in shape. It’s a given that staying fit and healthy as

“I gave up alcohol about four years ago, but I wish I’d done it 40 years ago.” report from Arlene Phillips - and I can honestly say I have never felt better. Not only has GOPO eradicated the pain I had in my joints, it also helps me stay active. And I’ve not had a cold since.

working on a London fruit and veg stall as a boy. Tip 4. Say no to booze

Tip 3. Eat well I eat healthily, and always have done – I think it’s hugely important, whatever your age. Eat everything in moderation and enjoy your meals. My weakness is a rib of beef grilled over embers of an open fire – I just make sure I do an extra 20 minutes of exercise if I treat myself. I also eat a lot of fruit, harking back to my days

I gave it up alcohol about four years ago but I wish I’d done it 40 years ago. Too much alcohol is just a disaster for your body. There’s nothing wrong with a glass of wine, but it’s just too easy to get carried away. I have a young family and suddenly realised I wasn’t immortal. Why waste precious times battling with a hangover?

T

he Broads are probably what Norfolk is best known for, over 125 miles of navigable lock-free waterways set in beautiful countryside and with many charming and picturesque towns and villages. The big skies and sparkling landscape of marshland fields, feathery reeds and tangled woodlands are a perfect canvas for adventure and relaxation. The Norfolk Broads may look natural, but

they are actually a man-made phenomenon, the result of inundated peat diggings. For those wishing to discover more about its fascinating history visit the Museum of the Broads where you can find out more history and see the tools used in traditional trades, including thatching. Without doubt, the best way to discover the Broads is by boat. Afloat is a real adventure, with hidden places, perfect fishing spots and close encounters with wildlife at every turn. Fertile Peat which formed from decaying ancient woodlands has made the Fens fecund

Hidden heritage of the Ouse Washes Landscape By Sara Marshall

T

he Ouse Washes Landscape in the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk Fens is known for its linear countryside, perfect tranquillity and wetland habitats. The story starts at the end of the last ice age when Britain was joined to continental Europe and the River Nene and the River Great Ouse were tributaries of the Rhine. The landscape contained forests, freshwater ponds and lakes and was home to wolves, lynx and elk. But sea level changes during the Mesolithic period drowned forests and caused peat to form. These rich soils meant that plants and wildlife thrived. Humans settled in the Fens during the Neolithic and Bronze Age and settlements

and ceremonial monuments later became preserved in silt and peat. Our sophisticated ancestors used timber trackways or log boats to move around the growing marshland. Small salt works in the area expanded to industrial scale and enabled the building of the Fen Causeway, a gravel Roman road and canal system stretching from Peterborough to Denver. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the conversion of Paganism to Christianity and the relocation of communities onto the island crests, which form the centres of most Fenland villages today. During the Medieval period, the Fenland resources were controlled by the dominant monasteries and abbeys of Ely, Ramsey, Thorney and Crowland. The Fenland inhabitants lived from fishing,

Holidays

Park life! There was a time when holiday parks had an image problem – but these days that has changed dramatically, as many parks go five-star but without the sky-high prices

I

f you think the holiday home of your dreams is out of reach think again. Though a Cotswold cottage or lavish London pad may still be on the pricey side, a park home or luxury lodge can make a luxurious and affordable alternative. Whether you are looking for a short break or somewhere to holiday year round, holiday park accommodation can now match many boutique hotels in the style stakes. Nestled in remote countryside locations and set within well-maintained grounds luxury lodges are fast becoming one of the UK’s most sought after holiday homes. With large open-plan living areas and full cooking facilities, which can save families a fortune, a lodge is nothing short of a minimansion. Lodges are generally double-glazed with central heating, which means they can be enjoyed year round. Many come with luxury features such real log burners, hot tubs and indoor saunas. Though it may seem like a relatively new concept to most, there are lots of reputable holiday parks, which offer this type luxury accommodation. Cliff House Holiday Park in Dunwich, Suffolk, specialises in the sale of luxury log cabin style holiday homes and luxurious static caravans, while Fritton Lake, located within the Somerleyton Estate in Norfolk, offers beautiful modern lodges

surrounded by woodland as holiday homes and rentals. The beauty of the Cambridgeshire countryside yet excellent road links makes it a popular choice for a holiday home. Looking good There are secrets to looking stylish at any age, say Alicia Kite and Kay Davidson of Alicia Kay Style. The fashion duo provide us with their top tips for being sexy at any age…

The best place to start with style is with underwear,” says Alicia. “A moulded bra is a must, as it can help keep your silhouette looking youthful.” Your breast should sit to the mid top of your arm, and not any lower. If you haven’t had a bra fitting for years, now is the time to book one. Less is more Less is more as you get older, forget about clothes that have too much embellishment. Too many frills can age you. Instead choose simple styles in quality fabrics.

Accessorise If you want to add extra sparkle, choose your accessories wisely. They can turn back the years, and also make you look slimmer. A long necklace that sits just below your tummy button will make your body look longer. Stay positive Write down your three favourite parts of your body, whether it’s your arms, ankles or even your ears and dress for the positives. Choose

Cash in on your home By Aaron Pooley

F

or the over 55’s there is a way to access some of the money that is tied up in your home. Known as equity release, this is a way to access your money as either a lump sum or in smaller amounts. There are two main equity release options; firstly, a ‘lifetime mortgage’ which allows you to take out a mortgage secured on your property. Interest is added to the loan, and unlike an ordinary mortgage, the interest added to the loan and remaining amount are paid back when you pass, or when you move house. Lifetime mortgages are very common but there are a number of things you should consider. You need to check the minimum age at which you can take out a lifetime mortgage as many mortgage providers insist that you are at least 60 before you apply. In addition to this, different mortgage providers may have slightly different thresholds. The second option for equity release is ‘home reversion’ which involves selling part or all of your home to a home reversion provider in return for a lump sum or regular payments. You do have the right to continue living in the property for the rest of your life, however you have to agree to maintain and insure it. With home reversion, you will normally get between 20% and 60% of the market value of

your home, or the part you sell but you should establish what percentage you will receive. Before going ahead with an equity release there are a number of important factors you should consider. Equity release is expensive as you’ll be charged at a high rate of interest than you would with an ordinary mortgage meaning you will be charged more than you would with an standard mortgage, which in turn will mean your debt will grow quickly. In addition to this if you borrow too much, you may not have the money you need later in your retirement. Whilst equity release is good if you need some extra money and don’t want to move house, it can make it hard for you to move house in the future and the money you receive from equity release may affect your entitlement to state benefits. There is a lot to think about when considering equity release and it’s important to consider your family in the process as there will be less for you to pass on to them, and the value of your home could disappear. Bathroom design tips By Gina Hutchings

A

s you get older, the mandatory daily bathroom routine can become a much more difficult task than it was before. As the aches, pains and limited mobility of mature bones seeps in, the usual morning

Walk In Shower As the years fly by, showering can become one of the most daunting bathroom tasks. Getting in and out of an awkward shower is tiring and many seniors admit to slacking with their physical hygiene because of this. Walkin showers allow easy and quick access to the shower. Moreover, installing a shower seat and hand held shower nozzle can allow for a longer shower without standing for a long time. Image source: handicapbathtubtoday.com

shower can become an exhausting task in a badly designed bathroom. Great bathroom design is vital for those who are looking to make their daily bathroom routine easier and simpler. Here are some simple design tips in creating a more accessible bathroom:

Uncluttered Space Having a bathroom space that is cluttered can be a huge hindrance for those with limited mobility. Keeping the design of your bathroom simple and spacious can often be the cheapest and easiest way to make this room more accessible. Adding additional storage kits into your cupboards can allow for extra storage space without having to add extra cupboard units. Thus keeping the bathroom spacious without all of the clutter. Making the most out of your conservatory By Gina Hutchings

T

he conservatory is often the one room in the house that all of us long to use, but sit in it for too long in the summer heat and you risk melting while the winter

chill will leave you frozen in place. Due to this the conservatory can end up being a storage room or a place to hang up your washing. So we decided to take a look at some tips on how to keep your conservatory useful.

Temperature Control One of the easiest and perhaps most cost efficient ways of making your conservatory a place to relax all year around is by installing an air conditioning unit that doubles as a heater in the long winter months.

Storage Solutions As many conservatories double as the storage room, one great way of increasing capacity is by making the most out of the cupboard space already available. Adding extra incupboard shelving kits is one way to make extra storage space without the clutter.

DÊcor Do’s Adding some natural woods is also a great way to create a relaxing and natural atmosphere with a rustic charm. For those with green fingers, your conservatory may also be a great place to grow some herbs, creating a functional feature that will impress any guest.

Love your bedroom Nothing beats falling asleep in fresh bedding but why stop there? The bedroom can be given a whole new look with some simple touches‌

I

f you’re bedroom is in need of a little update read our tips from interior and furnishings expert Danielle Harris at Oak Furniture Superstore for some simple tips on updating the bedroom. Add personality to the walls A feature wall is a fantastic way to give your bedroom some personality, and can be created using wallpaper in a pattern that you love, or painted in one of your favourite shades. However, you should avoid choosing to decorate the wall facing your bedroom door, as this can make the space appear smaller. Adding family photos, wall stickers or arty prints to your walls is a less permanent way to update your bedroom. Try displaying your photos in block frames and scattering them across a wall. Lights and mirrors It is important that your bedroom is a calm and relaxing place, where you can rest and unwind. Choosing pretty

chandeliers, soft coloured lampshades and bedside lamps with dimmer switches, will all help to create a tranquil atmosphere. Mirrors are a great way to create an illusion of space in a smaller bedroom, and can also help to make the most of natural light. Placing mirrors in positions where they can catch natural light and reflect this around your bedroom, will create a soft, fresh look. Have fun accessorising Adding new accessories to your bedroom is a fantastic way to give it an update. Jewellery racks and trinket boxes are perfect for adding some decoration to dressing tables and chests of drawers, and are great for keeping small items organised. Swapping standard drawer knobs with different designs is a simple way to update your furniture. Additionally, you can give your bedroom a luxurious feel by changing your light switch and plug socket covers to a chrome finish. By following these tips, you can give your bedroom a great new look, and create a fresh and relaxing space that you love. www.oakfurniture superstore.co.uk

Trim all the spade work! Can a garden truly be a garden and still be low maintenance? Well, perhaps that depends upon your notion of what gardening is

I

have a garden at my office, which is both planted in the ground and in large stand-alone containers. There are trees and shrubs, topiary and bamboo. I have a very simple off-the-tap irrigation system to reduce day to day care. The garden is lush and green, but I have to confess, I do very little to it, save for a burst of cutting, feeding and mulching in the spring and autumn, which takes only a few hours. In order for the garden to look nice it has to be tidy, so I sweep the garden on average twice a week from spring to autumn. The key to low maintenance is choosing your plants wisely. Hard landscaping will always need to be swept and cleaned to look good, but you can help yourself by choosing the right plants. Evergreens are ideal because they have a limited leaf drop (with the exception of bamboo). Topiary in the form of Buxus or

“The key to low maintenance is choosing your plants wisely.”

Kate Gould is an awardwinning garden designer and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Taxus is easy to care for with little work. Containers with glazed surfaces seem to look smarter when left for longer than those with matt finishes. Alternatively opt for planters with a ‘shabby chic’ appeal. If you like a lot of colour in the garden this takes care, but pots with bulbs for a spring show add impact at not a lot of expense and apart of watering late in the spring as the weather warms up, they need little human intervention. As with most gardening a ‘less is more’ approach can be applied to a low maintenance scheme. Do something big and bold well and care for that rather than trying to spread yourself too thin. Lawns take time to keep manicured so don’t be too hard on yourself if there are a few daisies that outwit you. Gravel is an absolute monster to keep clean so keep the planting in and around it relaxed. In essence gardening should be a pleasure not a chore so strike when the mood takes you and you will find the experience far more enjoyable. www.kategouldgardens.com

Know your pension This year saw the most radical changes to private pensions for a generation. We asked consumer champion Martin Lewis for his advice…

T

his is about how you use your pension savings. As always you can take a quarter of it as a tax-free lump sum. Yet for decades most people have effectively needed to use the remainder of the money to buy an annuity – a product that pays you an income each year until you die. Now anyone aged 55 and over can take the whole amount as a lump sum, paying no tax on the first 25% and the rest taxed as if it were a salary at their income tax rate. Does it apply to all types of pension? No, we’re only really talking private pensions where you and/or your employer saved up a pot of cash for retirement. These are known as ‘defined contribution’ or ‘money purchase’ pensions. It doesn’t apply to the state pension, nor in the main part does it apply to pensions where what you’re paid is a proportion of your final salary – known as ‘defined benefit’ pensions. There are ways to convert these final salary pensions into cash, but don’t do it without genuine independent financial advice. Is it worth taking out my pot as soon as I can? Usually not. If you’re in your 50s or early 60s you’re probably still working towards retirement and should be focusing on putting yourself in a position to have enough income

when you do retire. Yet if I want to I can just take out all the cash? If you choose to yes, but remember only 25% of it is tax-free. The rest is taxed at your current income tax rate like salary, and if you take a huge whack, just like if you earn more, some of it will push you into the higher tax bracket. If I don’t want to take it all out what can I do? Option 1: Leave it in your pension for when you need it. Then each time you withdraw, 25% of that is tax free. Option 2: Take 25% tax free, then buy a flexible income drawdown product. This is a product you buy to keep the rest invested so it can still grow, but you can use it to take income when needed. Option 3: Take 25% tax free, then buy an annuity. This gives you a guaranteed income each year for the rest of your life. I thought annuities were as dead as a dodo’s granny? Annuities are a decent concept, you get the security of knowing how much you can spend each year, and that it’ll last for the rest of your life. The problem is the rates have been poor, and 60% of people got them from their pension provider rather than checking for better deals. Yet done right it can be a useful option for security of income for life. Martin Lewis OBE is a television presenter. iving in the age of technology can be confusing, even for those of us born into it. It’s not surprising, then, to understand why some people of a certain age prefer to talk rather than type, or choose to lick a stamp rather than click a mouse when keeping in touch with their loved ones. What if, however, the deal was sweetened? Would it change your mind to know that a recent study showed that older people who used social media were less likely to develop dementia, have a higher sense of self-competence, and better mental and physical health than their peers who don’t? One lady was even quoted as saying: “Its

brought fun into my life again. Its changed my life. Everyone will tell you, I’m a different person. I’ve lost weight. I’ve started taking care of my appearance again. My life feels bigger now. I was slipping away into a slower pace of life. I feel invigorated.” Now if that isn’t a recommendation, I don’t know what is! The Workers’ Educational Association is at the forefront of delivering adult education both nationally and regionally and is perfectly placed to meet the needs of those wishing to develop or enhance their digital skills. Whether you want to come on a course with one of the many providers like the WEA or are after support, there are many opportunities within local communities through libraries, UK Online centres, banks and learning providers. Having that first taste of digital technology can lead to an appetite for learning, exploring, increased health and wellbeing and using the internet as part of our everyday lives.

Home, sweet care home If a relative or loved one is having difficulty caring for themselves independently, a care home can make a significant difference to their everyday life. With so many care homes available choosing one can be tough. Here are a few tips to help… Research Visit as many care homes as possible within the location that is most suitable for you, your family and friends. Ask to speak to relatives of the residents in the care homes that you’ve shortlisted as they will provide an insight into the daily life and care quality practiced. Ask about activities Find out about the activities programme as exercise and outings are important to everyday routine. Most care homes will offer days out and travel options. No matter your age or abilities there’s nothing better than exploring the great outdoors. Whether you’re living in a retirement residence or care home, there’s no reason not to make the most of the glorious region. Test the facilities Dine at the care homes to make sure the quality and menu is to your relative’s taste. Try and speak with carers and nurses as well as the manager as they will be the staff who will be caring for your relative on a daily basis. Ask questions such as “Do all the rooms have ensuite facilities?” This is important for elderly people to maintain comfort and dignity. Consider respite care to assess whether the home you’ve selected is the right home for your relative. Check the CQC report as this

will provide vital and impartial view of the home. Is everyone happy? Reaching the decision to find a care home for a person living with a dementia is not only a difficult choice to make, but it can also be an overwhelming experience. You can often find yourself asking: “how do we identify a care home with the right expertise in caring for people who live with dementia?” These are natural questions that B&M Care are helping to answer in its latest publication ‘A Guide to Selecting a Dementia Care Home.’ Co-written by B&M Care’s Dementia Care Practitioner, Caroline Inch (BSc Dementia Studies), and Business Development Manager, Angela Hunt, the booklet offers a guide to help you understand what to look for in dementia care. It highlights how B&M Care homes have been consistently delivering high standards of quality dementia care for 40 years and details what you should look for when selecting a care home.

Keeping a spark in your relationship The early stages of a relationship are often exciting and thrilling. Sometimes when we’ve been in a relationship for a little longer, we may feel the need to recapture the romance and spark.

A

s we age, we can experience sexual challenges that impact our relationships, including a loss or lack of sexual desire and issues such as intimate dryness or difficulty sustaining an erection. For women, pregnancy, childbirth and the menopause can all have an impact, along with factors such as stress, busy lifestyles, body image and self-confidence.

Dr Pam Spurr, a psychologist with 20 years experience as a self-help expert, life coach and agony aunt, gives some advice on how to keep a spark in your relationship

Take some ‘me time’ Recent statistics from Lady Prelox, a dietary supplement designed to boost libido, show that eight out of ten women have experienced a lack or loss of sex drive at some point. As stress and tiredness are often the reasons for a dwindling libido, it’s important to take some time out for you. Try a new hobby such as yoga or pilates to relax and unwind. Exercise also releases mood-enhancing hormones so you may feel happier and sexier too!

Consider what you eat If you suffer from energy slumps throughout the day, you should avoid sugary foods and include more whole grains in your diet. Try eating nuts, cereals and brown rice as they deliver slow-release energy, keeping you fuller for longer too. They are also packed with B vitamins, which are important for energy production. Food such as oats, leafy green vegetables, oily fish, adding spices like ginger and chilli to dishes and dark chocolate have also been shown to have libido enhancing qualities.

Enjoy little surprises Concentrate on surprising your loved one with little things that remind them that you care. Do they have a favourite film? Surprise them with a night in together to watch it. Make breakfast in bed with their favourite treat. Leave surprise notes around the house to remind them how much you love them.

Find your desire in a plant extract Physical challenges such as a lack of desire, difficulty reaching orgasm, intimate dryness or even fatigue or tiredness can often be overcome naturally through nutrition. A good example of this is natural supplement Lady Prelox, which combines plant-extract pycnogenol, a rose hip extract

and naturally occurring amino acids L’Arginine and L’Citrulline. Together, these natural ingredients can improve blood flow and reduce tiredness, increasing sexual desire, pleasure and comfort. Throw away your to-do list I don’t mean abandon your responsibilities completely, but for one day, throw away your to-do list and simply concentrate on spending time together. Clear your diary and just enjoy the time you have to focus on each other. Almost two thirds of women will suffer from some form of sexual challenge during their lifetime, whether this is issues lubricating, difficulty reaching orgasm or a lack of libido. Coping with cancer More than two million people are living with or after cancer in the UK today, and this figure is steadily rising with over 300,000 new diagnoses each year. By 2020, almost half the population in the UK will be living with cancer.

A

diagnosis of cancer impacts every area of someone’s life and the questions and challenges it brings affect not only the person with cancer, but their family too. Here are 10 things that you can do if you’re affected by cancer put together by Lisa Punt and Maggie Fowler, Centre Head and Cancer Support Specialist at Maggie’s Wallace – a centre that provides practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends based within the grounds of Addenbrooke’s Hospital. 1. Getting started with cancer treatment The challenges you, your family and friends may face when first diagnosed with a cancer may feel overwhelming. An opportunity to meet with a member of your healthcare team and/or a cancer support

specialist to talk through potential side effects, gaining more knowledge about cancer, becoming an active partner with your health care team and focusing on well-being during cancer treatment can help you to feel more in control. 2. Eat well Eating well during and after cancer treatment can make a real difference to the way you feel. Attending a nutritional workshop will help to introduce you to the foods that are particularly good for you – and show you tasty ways to introduce them to your diet. 3. Get Creative The concentration involved in making something helps us to slow down and gather our thoughts. The unconscious mind can express feelings through pictures, colours and shapes that we find difficult to put into words. 4. Relaxation Relaxation can be a simple yet effective tool for transforming the emotional state of your

62 | eastlife.co.uk

Health and wellbeing

mind. To help maintain health you can create a positive and relaxed emotional state using relaxation techniques. 5. Exercise There is increasing evidence that regular exercise reduces side-effects and the risk of the cancer returning in certain types of cancer. Gentle exercise can help with the weariness that so often accompanies cancer and its treatments. Why not try yoga, pilates, tai chi or just a short walk? 6. Support Be it emotional, physical or financial we should not be afraid to ask for it. To seek out those who can help is a wise move. Maybe join a support group. A counsellor, psychologist or cancer support specialist could well be of great help. 7. Talking Talking to friends and family is important and can be so reassuring. At times however this can prove challenging. To deal with others’ emotional response on top of our own distress and changing emotions sometimes needs professional help. 8. Seek support beyond treatment In reality the end of treatment can leave people feeling uncertain. Attending a course to help develop skills and techniques that will support you through this transition period and beyond can be a positive step in moving forwards. This programme will focus on exercise, nutrition and wellbeing. Improving these key areas will help you to increase your energy levels, decrease feelings of anxiety and distress and improve your ability to manage your life post-treatment.

9. Talk to a benefits adviser Living with cancer can have a real impact on your finances through lost income and increasing bills, such as heating and travel. If you or someone you care for is living with cancer then a benefits adviser can help you complete forms and access additional support you may be entitled to such as parking permits. 10. Listening Visit us, you talk we will listen. We will try and understand how it really is for you. Your local Maggie’s Wallace centre is located within the grounds of Addenbrooke’s hospital and offers practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends, free of charge and with no referral required. The centre is warm and welcoming with professional staff on hand to help you find the support you need. If you or anyone you know has been affected by cancer and would like to find out more about our programme of support then you can drop in to the centre Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm (no appointment needed), telephone 01223 249220 or email: wallace@maggiescentres.org
