ebauchery and drama will hit the Theatre Royal’s stage this month, as a trio of top class productions about the ups and downs of life balanced with joie de vivre fill March to the
brim. Premiering their show at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds will be Out of Joint Theatre Company with their probing look into the NHS, as they follow the journey of one elderly lady through the digestive system of this much-maligned institution and ask, what IS the diagnosis for this huge and occasionally ungainly system? Directed by the renowned Max Stafford-Clark, this production is written by his wife, Stella Feehily and draws upon the series of major strokes suffered by the director in 2006, leaving him hospital-bound for 6 months. Filled with horror and hilarity and starring the great Stephanie Cole and Jane Wymark, the production takes dips into the surreal, as a parrot channels the voice of Margaret Thatcher, and nurses break into song! Meanwhile pathos and satire also play their part as the plaster is ripped off this divisive institution. So steel yourself, because this may hurt (a bit!) Also with a medical slant, Visitors (starring Linda Bassett of Larkrise to Candleford fame and Robin Soans) will be dropping in for one night only... In a farmhouse at the edge of Salisbury Plain, a family is falling apart as they address the best way of caring for an ageing relative. They can’t afford to stay at home and look after her; they can’t afford to put her into care... As Edie’s mind unravels, her family are forced to ask “are we living the way we want?” Visitors takes a haunting, beautiful look at the way our lives slip past us. By contrast, a rip-roaring journey through the wild and carnivalesque festival of Twelfth Night, is brought to the theatre by Filter, in association with The Royal Shakespeare Company. This contemporary production of Twelfth Night embraces the wildness of Shakespeare’s party-play, and revels in the music, folly and tomfoolery, all the while staying true to the ever-impressive words of the nation’s brilliant bard. by Anna Scrafield This May Hurt a Bit 6 – 15 March Twelfth Night – 18 – 22 March Visitors – 31 March Box office: 01284769505, www.theatreroyal.org. he Glassworks Spa is delighted to announce the re-launch of their newly developed gymnasium and spa concept for 2014. The Glassworks Spa, located next to Cambridge’s premiere boutique hotel, The Varsity Hotel, is a destination wellness centre. Housed in a beautiful eighteenth century glass warehouse, visitors can feel inspired whether working-out or winding-down. The gymnasium has been carefully designed to recreate a buzzing New York style space, with the latest equipment for an optimum work-out, with personalisation and social features. In addition to a team of dedicated Personal Trainers, there are Sports Massage Therapists and Nutritionists who work in tandem to give a 360 wellness approach. And it’s not just high-octane work-outs that are encouraged: The Glassworks offers three different types of yoga, as well as pilates. 2014 also sees the relaunch of the Spa area, with its signature Jacuzzi area that overlooks the river Cam: surely one of the most peaceful spots in all of Cambridge. Heated relaxation benches allow guests to wind down in a luxury mosaic tiled space, before heading into the sauna and steam area, lit to feel that visitors are relaxing under twinkling stars. n Sunday 30 March, The Varsity Hotel will host an evening devoted to Britain’s most quintessential spirit, with a gastronomic gin supper at its restaurant in association with the Cambridge Distillery. Held on Mother’s Day, this ‘Mother’s Ruin’ gin pairing evening has been designed as the perfect treat for gin loving mums. The event will be hosted by the hotel’s acclaimed Head Chef, Angus Martin, and Will Lowe, Master Distiller at the Cambridge Distillery and a world-renowned mixologist, who has created drinks for the Queen at her Coronation Anniversary at The Ritz. Attending Mums and their guests will enjoy an engaging talk from Will, a true expert in the spirits industry, revealing the history and construction of this complex spirit along with demonstrations on creating finely balanced botanical infusions. Angus will be on hand to introduce guests to the inspiration behind each of his specially created dishes. The evening will start in style with the freshly distilled blend of Cambridge Gin, produced exclusively at the Cambridge Distillery, paired with its definitive counterpart, Indian tonic. Guests will then enjoy a sumptuous three course tasting menu of Angus’ expertly prepared gin-infused dishes, each with a bespoke pairing of individually matched gin cocktails created by Will. There are few places more idyllic for gin lovers to spend the perfect evening treating mum, discovering unique botanicals and flavour combinations, than the waterside setting of the Varsity Hotel. Places are priced at £49, guests will be treated to three courses, with a gin pairing alongside each course; tickets can be bought from www.thevarsityhotel.co.uk.

lifford Blakey, whose work features in the Spring Show at the Market Place Gallery, Olney, is a landscape artist who shows only at a very few selected galleries each year. His journey to become a successful painter began when he graduated from Newcastle University with an MA in Fine Art. Since then he has had a varied career within art and design, and has collected a range of prizes for his work including the Brian Mosely Memorial Award (1999) and he has also been made a Fellow of the British Watercolour Society. Often buyers describe the way in which they feel engulfed in the paintings Clifford produces, as if they have been placed into the actual landscape. Cliff wants those who buy his work to own “the genuine article” and for this reason he will not make prints of his paintings, although there are some paintings he could have sold many times over. “It is a big thing for most people to invest in buying a painting” he says “I am very privileged to be in this position… People have to know that each painting is the very best that I could have done with my skills at that time.” With grateful thanks to Mike Caddis for content.
Clifford Blakey’s work can be seen at The Market Place Gallery, Market Place, Olney, MK46 4AJ, from 28 Feb 2014. For opening hours and more images, see www.marketplacegallery.co.uk.

ing’s Lynn Arts Centre is certainly the cultural hub of the city! The historic building in which the Arts Centre is based contains all kinds of treasures and the exhibitions are always really different, with something for everyone. From March to June visitors will enjoy ceramics, photography, paintings, illustration, watercolour and more. With four different galleries, art lovers will not be disappointed, and thanks to the fantastic exhibition Private Collection, local people can even actively contribute to the success of the Centre by lending artworks that normally adorn their homes! Theatre, Comedy, Films and musical shows are regularly presented in the Guildhall Theatre which is the most complete and largest surviving Guildhall in the country. Recent research has even indicated that it is likely that Shakespeare himself performed there! Paul Chowdhry will make audiences laugh with PC’s World, whilst Black Out examines prison life. Families will be entranced by A Real Fairy Story. For 2 months King’s Lynn will be Following the Herring, with an Arts Council project on an East Coast tour from South Shields, a heritage event which highlights the stories of the herring lassies and their difficult plight. The Arts Centre has also been involved in European projects with France since 2012. Interculturality is part of the development of the organisation and the team itself is multicultural! English, Swiss, French - this diversity brings a new dynamism to the Arts Centre which constantly offers new events every year! In 2014, the Café des Langues opens its door and Barter Parties are organised for bargain hunters! A project for young people will be organised with the French Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean for next summer and young performers can improve their musical skills with Phonic project and gain an Arts Award! Mother’s Day
MANDALA HEALTH AND BEAUTY by Lucy Dellow
As a working mother of two energetic young boys, ’unwind’ is not a word in my vocabulary. So the therapists at Mandala Health and Beauty were unaware a challenge was heading their way. I found Mandala Health and Beauty situated in a quiet picturesque courtyard, hidden away from the busy High Street of the market town, Olney. My facial was an ESPA treatment, an aromatherapy facial using natural products. The treatment started with a consultation with my therapist to provide a totally caring, personalised experience offering the ultimate in luxury. The atmosphere created by the staff and therapists at the salon is friendly and incredibly calming. After my hour treatment, which also included an amazing shoulder and head massage along with the facial, I left the salon feeling completely revived, relaxed and definitely unwound. Not surprising really as Mandala is the Sanskrit word that means ‘whole world’ or ‘healing circle’. This Mother’s Day treat all your hardworking mums to a truly serene experience with the outstanding team at Mandala Health and Beauty. HELEN JANE FLORISTRY Winner of Wedding Industry Regional Award for floristry
L
ocal florist Helen, owner of Helen Jane Floristry, was delighted to hear that she was voted regional winner for the East of England in the 2014 Wedding Industry Awards. The Wedding Industry Awards recognise and reward excellence. They are the only client-voted regional and national awards in the industry, which means that Helen was voted by clients who used her wedding floristry service over the past year. In fact over 85 per cent of Helen’s clients who were eligible to vote took the trouble to do so – one even voted while still on her honeymoon! “I am so delighted to have won this award as it shows just how pleased the couples have been with the beautiful wedding flowers I have created for them – and at the end of the day, that’s what I’m here for!” Helen was nominated for the award by one of her brides only weeks before the closing date and then agonised about whether to enter the awards. “The aim of my business is to provide a great floristry service to my clients, so I decided it would be a good idea
to put myself to the test. I’m so glad others think I am getting things right.” Helen is a City & Guild’s qualified florist who won a national award for her studies, and established her business only three years ago. Over the summer she has provided beautiful flowers and arrangements to weddings and special occasions at some of the best venues around Stamford, Rutland and Peterborough. She consistently receives glowing testimonials from clients who value her high level of commitment and attention to detail, as well as being delighted with the fabulous floral designs she creates. Helen Jane Floristry creates unique and beautiful flower designs for special occasions. Helen will be happy to arrange a consultation with you to discuss your own floral requirements and can be contacted by phone on 07852100982 or by email at helen@ helenjanefloristry.co.uk. T
here are many components that add up to the perfect wedding day – and there’s no doubt that the choice of dress is a big one. Let’s face it, when you were a seven-year-old girl fantasising about marrying Prince Charming, it wasn’t centrepieces you were dreaming of. It has always been about The Dress. But as the years go by, tastes change, and so do trends. The meringue you wanted once may be the stuff of nightmares now. Or maybe you’re determined to make your princess dreams a reality. The most likely answer is that you’re kind of torn. And who can blame you? There are literally hundreds of stunning wedding dress designs out there, and every single one has its own appeal. So how’s a girl to choose? As always, the beginning is the best place to start…
Perfect
Weddings
Dress
INSPIRATION Step back from mental images of you posing on your wedding day in some fantastical gown from your imagination - it’s time to get back to basics. A good starting point is to begin collating a wedding folder or mood board – either online (there’s a reason so many brides-to-be flock to Pinterest) or with good old-fashioned pen and paper. This will help you define the tone of your wedding (which will help massively with planning the rest of it) and give you the chance to see all sorts of different dresses to give you an idea of what’s available. Consider everything, from avantgarde haute couture on a Paris runway, to a simple dress from a real person’s wedding – at this point, you’re just deciding what elements you like. Save an image even if there’s only one part of the dress that appeals to you – a bow here, a line of beading there, it all adds up to your perfect dress. BUDGET Once you’ve got your inspiration, bring yourself back down to earth and figure out how you can make it work with your budget. This is totally personal – some brides will have no problem axing details like particular flowers or expensive entertainment in favour of an extravagant dress, whilst others will be keen to keep the
The
cost down so as to focus on the overall experience of the day. A good proportion will be prepared to go over-budget if it means achieving exactly the wedding they want. Be realistic about what you can afford, and be strict with yourself once you’ve decided. Don’t try on any dresses that are out of your price range unless you know you can easily afford to go over it – you’ll only end up heartbroken and in love with a dress you can’t have. Chances are, you’ll have looked at plenty of high-end dresses at the inspiration stage, and plenty of less pricey designers incorporate these trends into their designs, so there’s no need to try on expensive dresses!
STYLE The most important thing of all, of course, is the actual style of your dress. There are as many guides to making a choice as there are wedding dress designs, so stay focused on the most important thing: your comfort. Go with something that makes you feel beautiful and confident, and you can’t go wrong. Trends are fleeting, but elegance eastlife.co.uk|39

Weddings is timeless. It’s sometimes tempting to get swept up in all of the latest fashions, but unless fashion is central to your life and quirkiness defines your character, it’s far better to stick to classic styles. You’ll never suffer from ‘dated wedding pictures’ syndrome – look to photos of puffed-sleeved dresses from the 80s for examples – and your gown will stand the test of time. Trends can easily be incorporated into classic styles – for example, with bow or a piece of embellishment on an otherwise traditional dress, or an unexpected pop of colour. It’s all a matter of your personal taste. As well as your taste, the time of year and formality of your wedding are also hugely important. Whether or not your wedding is inside, you’ll still need to look appropriately seasonal – for example with an elegant stole, wrap, or cape for a winter wedding, and breathable fabrics in the summer. This ties in to you being comfortable – you don’t want to spend your special day shivering, or worse, worrying about sweat patches! It’s no good if your wedding dress clashes with your theme, so consider the formality and tone of your wedding. Ultra formal weddings call for a dress with impact – like a ball gown, or something with serious sparkle. But if you’re having a more casual affair – an outdoor summer wedding, for example, or something with vintage flair, then such an ostentatious choice might look out of place. Floaty Grecian styles, or beautiful draping maxi dresses are still elegant and appropriately bridal, but a little more relaxed. There’s also no reason to subscribe to the ‘full length’ rule. Vintage tea-length dresses with 50s appeal are quirky and striking. If you have the confidence, then even a shorter length can work – and it will give you the chance to show off a fabulous pair of shoes. Strapless dresses have become somewhat ubiquitous over the years, and whilst there’s nothing wrong with opting for this type of look, picking a dress with sleeves is an easy way to achieve a more unique effect. As Sarah Burton’s McQueen dress for the royal wedding in 2011 showed, sleeves can look up-to-date as well as classic. Long sleeves are softened with sheer or lacy fabrics, and work brilliantly for winter or early spring weddings. ¾ sleeves offer
elegance and are extremely flattering. Spaghetti straps are a beautiful and feminine compromise on the strapless look, showing the same amount of skin. Cap sleeves are dainty in lace, and off-theshoulder sleeves show off one of the sexiest feminine features – the shoulders and décolletage. Coloured dresses have been big news for a while now with bridal designers, with trends turning to shades of light nude or tones of blush and peach. Many dresses even incorporate the ‘something blue’ somewhere unexpected – peeking out from beneath a lace overlay or even at the foot of an ombre style gown. These fresh takes on tradition can be extremely striking, and provide more of a chance to get creative and pick a colour that really suits you.

Soft Furnishings Spring 2014
S
pring is the season of new beginnings. If you want to update the look of your living room, or give new energy to your bedroom, what better period is there to do so than in the upcoming spring months? Soft furnishings can be a cheap and quick solution to give any room a new look, from the choice of the cover for your cushions, sofa and armchair, to the fabrics that spice up the curtains, and floor pillows, hide rugs and poufs. You should let your creativity run wild for a more personal room, but it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on the latest trends. Pantone’s top spring colours According to the latest Pantone colour report, the top hues for spring 2014 are a vibrant mix of brights and pastels including Dazzling Blue, Radiant Orchid, Cayenne, Violet Tulip and Hemlock. Walls and big pieces of furniture should be kept in soft, neutral shades - such as sand or Pantone’s Placid Blue and Paloma (grey), so that they don’t clash with the smaller details in the room. Soft furnishings are all about vibrant colours this season. Do you want to revive the style of your bedroom? Try Radiant Orchid for bed linen and curtains. For an immediately relaxing atmosphere, opt for a deep blue or Violet Tulip to cover sofas and cushions. Cayenne (vibrant coral) or Hemlock (soft green) are the perfect tones to lighten up your kitchen, living room, and even the bathroom. Just adding one of
these shades will make any room look fresh and ready for the new season. Catwalk inspirations Top spring fashion trends find their way into interior design too, with bold Asian influences and the revival of classic tartan – just to mention two. If you fancy an exotic theme for your living room or bedroom, you can find inspiration from stylish oriental patterns and colours. From an armchair upholstered in a Thai-style fabric, to a custom-made ottoman covered in jewel-toned Indian textile; exotic colours and textures will give a sumptuous feel and can be just as relaxing as a monochromatic interior. If you are a fan of tartan, you’ll be happy to find tartan patterns back in both fashion and interiors with a contemporary twist. Keep the basics of your bedroom simple, and then inject energy with coordinated bed linen and cushions in tartan designs. Why not opt for 2014’s latest combination of teal blue and lime green, for a new take on traditional Scottish style. Appealing fabrics When it comes to fabrics, you have plenty of choices to lift the look of your room. Does your sofa look boring and worn out? You can either choose a cotton cover in this year’s favourite blue, or replace it with a new padded sofa. Fancy brightening the monotone style of your sitting room or bedroom? Try adding a velvet-upholstered chair with a trendy animal print. The
result will be surprisingly sophisticated. Remember that this is the year of a backto-basics approach, with the supremacy of natural materials. For a raw yet stylish look, choose simple woven rugs made from raffia or wool for warmth and keep your sheets simple – plain white cotton or linen. Detail focused With soft furnishings, attention to detail is important. The secret is to add a touch of class without overdoing it – no one wants a room that feels congested, especially if it is small already. You can avoid this problem by using floor cushions and poufs, a convenient and stylish way to decorate your sitting room if you lack free space. Coordination is at the core of interior design, so echo key colours in your room with throws, rugs, and cushions for a cohesive scheme. Also, play it smart with some effective contrasts and ton sur ton (matching tones). Soft pink, lilac and cool turquoise shades make romantic accents and can enhance a plain white room. Elegant black and luxurious gold evoke Art Deco glamour of days gone by. Less is more Focus on fewer shades and essential pieces of furniture - avoid mixed styles at all costs. The right choice of soft furnishings will result in the successful makeover of your room, whether you are looking for a fresh, elegant or vibrant look. n

National Bed Month
NATIONAL BED MONTH Did you know that March is National Bed Month? So, what better month to find out more about the secrets of a good night’s sleep?
N
ational Bed Month is the longest standing awareness campaign by The Sleep Council. This non-profit organisation – funded by UK bed manufacturers and suppliers but working in total independence – aims to promote the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. The month of March is completely dedicated to this “sleep good feel good” campaign, providing guidance to make everyone aware of the right ingredients for a restful night. Here are some tips on the perfect bed, plus some crucial advice on how to get quality sleep and how to deal with any problems throughout the night. Your Lifestyle We live in fast-paced and stimulating times. From the moment we wake up, we are bombarded by a myriad of information thanks to the digital age and our ever-changing media culture. That’s why it can be difficult to switch off and wind down, and our sleep can become quite problematic and unsatisfying. The solution, however, is simple, and the following steps can help a lot to improve your sleep time: • Reduce the intensity of lights in the evening by using dimmer switches or lamps with low wattage bulbs. • Try reducing the use of technology (phones, TVs and computers) before bedtime. • Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and cigarettes in the evening. Possibly have an early and light dinner, focusing on proteins for their sleep-friendly chemicals. • Avoid sedatives such as sleeping pills and alcohol
to help you sleep. The effects are usually shortterm, they can have counter effects, and sustained use can of course lead to addiction. • Exercise in the evenings is not discouraged, just don’t overdo it as wearing yourself out physically is not particularly likely to induce sleepiness. • Stress and worry lead to poor sleep and, in turn, insomnia. There’s no single solution, it’s all a matter of finding the deep causes of your concern and the best way for you to overcome them (e.g. yoga, music therapy or relaxation/breathing exercises are known to de-stress the mind). Your Bedroom To improve the quality of your sleep, you don’t have to look further than your bedroom of course. The right environment is the key for a good night’s sleep. Here are some tips to make it welcoming and pleasant. • Keep your room dark during night time with curtains or blinds, but even an eye mask can be useful. • Make sure it’s not too cold or too warm. The ideal temperature is around 16-18C. If you are cold, it's better to have a hot water bottle than to leave heating on all night. • Don’t treat your bedroom as an extension of your living room – which means it is better to leave the TV out. Also try keeping the room tidy, and get rid of unnecessary clutter, which can lead to stress. • Some colours are stimulating such as red and yellow. Opt for pastel colours, like soft blues or purples, which are more calming. • Adorn it with some personal and cute finishing touches, like artwork or pictures of your dear ones.
It will help you to feel more connected with the room and look forward to going to bed. Last but definitely not least, the choice of your bed is vital. At the end of a long day there’s no better feeling than slipping into a comfortable bed. The right mattress can make the difference between a restorative night’s sleep and poor quality sleep. Lack of support from a mattress reinforces a bad sleeping posture that can lead to annoying aches. When shopping for a new mattress or bed: • Always put value and quality over price. It’s a long-term investment that affects your health, so don’t be stingy. • The right support is critical – a mattress that’s too hard or too soft will be uncomfortable or become so as time goes by. It needs to be firm enough to support your spine in correct alignment – but must also conform to your body contours. • Try before you buy. You should lie down on each one you’re seriously considering for at least 10 minutes and try different positions (you move 4060 times a night) to decide if it’s a good fit. • You should be thinking about replacing your mattress after about seven years. • Add some special touches to your bed – from bed linen to cushions and a seasonal duvet. And of course, don’t forget comfy pyjamas for yourself! Research has shown that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could rob you of up to an hour’s sleep a night. That’s why you should take care of your sleep environment and habits. In the end it’s all a matter of common sense and with some extra attention you can have the bed – and the sleep – you deserve. n

This Year’s Hot Picks For Your
Kitchen Versatility and self-expression are the watchwords to give a fresh and functional look to your kitchen, the living core of the family home. Here is a small guide to the big trends of 2014. OPEN SPACE, OPEN MIND Kitchens are no longer cut off from the rest of the house. Following the latest trend, they open up into the living space, becoming open concept kitchens. Much more than just a cooking space, modern kitchens are also equipped with a highly functional worktop. Dining and working zones can be visually separated by contrasting lighting and materials. Another interesting trend is open shelving, showcasing kitchenwares and food instead of relegating them to the usual closed cabinets. Static room plans are discarded in favour of a multigenerational and universal design, taking the ages and needs of users into consideration, making for a flexible and comfortable space for everyone. IT’S ALL A MATTER OF COLOUR! 2014 sees a preference for neutral, soft tones rather than bright colours: from antique white or honey wood, to sandy and grey tones, giving a homely, elegant look. Bold colours are still used to emphasise small details, like kitchen utensils and accessories. Having said that, it’s all about choosing your own style. For a more classic look with a touch of urban minimalism, you can opt for a standard white or cream, or be daring with on-trend dark denim blue, one of this year’s most fashionable shades. If you fancy spicing up your kitchen, why not try adding some exotic patterns just behind the sink. Choosing different cupboard colours contrasts nicely with stylish neutrals.
in terms of energy use and bills. For instance, the touchless faucet is growing in popularity, due to the fact that it is both practical and eco-friendly. STYLISH MATERIALS Practical doesn’t mean ugly. Experiment with ways to make your kitchen classy and stylish, without losing its functionality. Quartz is the new granite - it is more durable, easy to clean, and crack and stain resistant. Incorporate 2014’s metallic trend simply by introducing some accessories such as a copper kettle and saucepans – expensive-looking but with small price tags. Pair metal with wood (worktops and cabinets) for a rustic feel and overall effect. Try matching your floor and wall tiles (like the stone-effect finish) to create the illusion of a bigger room. The new woodeffect ceramic floor tiles immediately create a warm environment, and it’s also waterproof. Feel free to follow your creativity according to your budget and needs, and enjoy your personalised kitchen.
COMPACT AND GREEN One of the challenges of modern interior design is how to make effective use of small spaces.Try introducing a corner space for the sink and cooking hob. Many new models are available in 2014, from a pentagonal ceramic to an L-shaped stainless steel sink. Plus, investing in green energy appliances can ensure significant savings

Light And Colour For A Spring
Bedroom The place where you sleep and get your much-needed rest is arguably the most important room of the house. Don’t leave it out when it comes to the annual interior revamp... THINK SPRING Thick, plush duvets, electric blankets, and more layers of bed linen than your average mille-feuille are the order of the day (or night) in winter, when all we want to do is hibernate and be warm. But spring is beckoning and it’s time for a fresher, lighter look. The Pantone colour for 2014 is Radiant Orchid, a pretty mix of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones that bridges the gap between brights and pastels. This sets the tone for the way that colours will interact this year – accent brights pop against neutrals and subtler pastel tones. Incorporating this into your bedroom makes for a fresh spring look.
UP-TO-DATE AND ARTY Play up edgy modernity with geometric, minimalist furniture and simple, broad lines. People are also beginning to realise the significance of art in bedroom design. Not only does it lift a room and give it an utterly contemporary feel, but also provides a chance for you to express your taste and give your room a really personal touch. East Anglia is the region of great artists and artistic inspiration, so pop over to our main magazine to have a look at our Arts pages and get started! Never underestimate the power of light and colour - a bright, airy, and slightly funky bedroom will lift your spirits on those nippy spring mornings that are just around the corner.
INJECT SOME COLOUR Colour all over the walls can look overwhelming, and often makes a room seem smaller. But accent walls are a stylish way to add a fun pop of colour. Continuing the theme through other accent pieces such as lampshades, soft furnishings, and varied accessories really pulls the room together and has a polished, neat look. Bedroom accessories are a low-effort, low-cost way to inject some style and on-trend colour into your room, and don’t necessarily need an accent wall to hold them together. Contrast is important, though, so make sure that there are sufficient neutrals and subtler shades to balance out the colour impact. This will keep the room light and airy, as well as contributing to a chic wellstyled finish. LET THE ‘LIGHT’ ONE IN Light is so important in interior design – so make sure you make the most of yours. Plenty of light fittings within the room are definitely important, but if you can have them fitted, big feature windows are an emerging design trend and a great way to let as much natural light in as possible. A focus on windows and natural light gives a fantastic contemporary look.

Add Value To Your Home With The Right
Carpet Carpeting is the third largest investment the average homeowner makes. In years past, a carpet was considered a decorative addition, now it’s one of the basic building materials that helps determine home value. When you’re shopping for carpet, the fiber from which it’s made will be your most important consideration. The kind of fiber determines many of the carpet’s qualities and accounts for 80 per cent of its cost. Remember that no fiber is right for all situations. Before you make your choice, you should look at a number of factors: LjY^Ç[& Ak l`] [Yjh]l ^gj Y Z]\jgge$ where there will be minimal wear and tear? Or a family room, where there will be more? Or a hallway or stairway, which receives the most? :m\_]l& Hja[]k nYjq imal] oa\]dq& Qgm should look for the best value that you can afford. Egaklmj]& ;Yjh]l ^gj Y ZYl`jgge$ kitchen, basement or pool area may be exposed to dampness. Some fibers tolerate it, some don’t. Da^]lae]& <g qgm oYfl l`] [Yjh]l lg last for decades? Think about fiber in relation to other aspects of the carpet you’re considering. For example, some fibers are best with low-pile or low-loop carpets. Some require greater density or more yarn twist. The actual dyeing method is another consideration. Some fibers can be solution dyed - the colour is mixed in when the fiber is being made. With stock dyeing, the fiber is dyed later and the colour does not penetrate. Solution dyeing usually results in a smaller range of colours available, but greater resistance to fading. Remember that not all fibers of a particular type are identical. There are different grades and qualities of every type of fiber. A lowgrade, poorly made carpet may not be of value, no matter what the fiber.
for its durability. Because it’s the hardest of all the synthetic carpet fibers, it resists wear and abrasion. A nylon carpet will usually last longer than one made from another type of fiber. The fiber also has good resilience - it bounces back after being bent or crushed. It has excellent yarn “memory,” meaning that it holds its twist well. Nylon carpets are less likely than many others to show indentations after furniture has rested on it. It looks new longer than most fibers. Polyester is another popular synthetic fiber used in carpets. Less expensive than nylon, it once had a reputation for being of poor quality. In recent years, polyester fiber has been improved considerably. It has its advantages and can represent an excellent value for certain applications. Polyester carpets present a beautiful appearance when new. The fiber has a very luxurious “hand” (the feel of the fibers). Polyester also comes in some of the richest colours of any fiber. Because
it is process-dyed, it has excellent fade resistance. Wool is the most expensive and luxurious fiber in everyday use for carpets. It has advantages over synthetics but costs considerably more. Wool is high-maintenance. It usually requires a professional cleaner to do a careful job. The fiber has some stain-resistance, but wool can absorb protein-based stains like meat juice and blood. It’s also sensitive to dye stains like tea, coffee and wine. Fortunately, because of the way the wool fibers bend light, it tends to hide dirt. Wool’s resistance to fire is another plus. While synthetic carpets can melt and burn, wool chars but does not burn. It can be a good choice if cigarette burns are a concern. Because it’s a natural fiber, wool is a sustainable resource. It has good insulating properties. It absorbs and releases moisture, serving as natural humidifier. It resists dust mites - a huge bonus if you suffer from allergies.
CARPET MATERIALS Nylon is the most common carpet fiber on the market today. Nylon is largely noted

Foster Care
COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD’S LIFE?
T
he Foster Care Co-operative (FCC) is actively recruiting foster carers across the East of England. This year more than 8,000 new foster carers will be needed across England and the agency is seeking carers in this area to provide stable and loving homes for children of all ages and backgrounds, to give them the chance of family life and realise their full potential. The Foster Care Co-operative - a not for profit organisation and the only co-operative operating in foster care in the UK - has been operating for almost 15 years and has strong local groups of carers in the Eastern counties. FCC is above all child orientated taking great care to match children with foster carers and has a special culture which is based on valuing foster carers and
staff and is dedicated to providing mutual support that will change a child’s life. Anyone can foster and carers come from all walks of life. What all foster carers have in common is a commitment to the children. Carers need to be able to offer a child or children a room of their own as well as offering patience, time and commitment to young people of different ages. Carers also need to be reasonably fit and healthy and are subject to criminal disclosure checks. A sense of humour is valuable too! In return, the agency offers professional support from fully qualified social workers, full and comprehensive training and a fee which recognises a professional caring role. Go to www.fostercarecooperative.co.uk for more details about FCC. n

THE RISE OF MALE COSMETIC SURGERY More and more men are turning to cosmetic surgery to improve the way they look and feel about themselves, from eye lid surgery to tummy tucks, and the trend is set to continue
W
e might scorn at the sight of a surgically enhanced Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Gordon Ramsay, but looking good and achieving it with cosmetic surgery is fast becoming acceptable for men. According to a recent poll by YouGov, a quarter of all men in the UK would at least consider it, while audit figures for 2011 from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS, www.baaps.org.uk) reveal that 10 per cent of cosmetic surgery procedures were for men. It seems men are keen to go under the scalpel for tummy tucks, nose jobs, eye lid surgery and ‘man boob’ removal, with no signs of numbers slowing despite the recession. Figures from BAAPS back this up with a rise of 7 per cent of men having ‘man boob’ operations (Gynaecomastia treatment) last year, and a 15 per cent rise in demand for tummy tucks (abdominoplasty). And it’s not just older men who are undergoing procedures as Tariq Ahmad Consultant Cosmetic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital explains: “Eyelid surgery tends to be in the 50+ age group, while Rhinoplasty and Gynaecomastia treatment is more often in younger men. Pinnaplasty/Otoplasty (ear surgery) is usually performed in childhood, aged around 5 or 6, but may be carried out at any age after that, including in adults.” It’s a given that undergoing any cosmetic procedure will not guarantee perfect results and eye lid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a tricky procedure for even the most talented of surgeons. “Male blepharoplasty is even more demanding than for women as the skin is generally rather thicker and tougher in quality. Surgery, especially for lower eyelids, demands great care, but it is still possible to achieve a natural look. Very often the main difficulty is in persuading men to be sufficiently patient to
let the lids settle down and for the true result to display itself. This can take several months and particularly applies to the male lower lid,” says Mr Ahmad. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) recovery time will vary considerably depending on the extent of surgery carried out and whether or not the tummy muscles have been tightened or not. “For a mini-abdominoplasty, the recovery time will be around two weeks, after which strenuous exercise can be introduced over the next two to three weeks. For an extended abdominoplasty with muscle tightening, strenuous exercise (situps, etc) should be avoided for eight to ten weeks,” says Tariq Ahmad. The nuts and bolts of any decision must always come down to the burning question: where can you find a good surgeon? Discuss it with your GP and do a lot of research. BAAPS is based at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and will give you information and advice. “Put your trust in someone in whom you feel confident not only to carry out a good operation for you, but also to deal with any complications that might occur. As any honest surgeon will tell you, problems can happen and that is when the committed and experienced surgeon will really come into his or her own,” explains Mr Ahmad. DIABETES EVERYDAY EATING “I want to be told what I can eat – not what I can’t.”
I
DDT (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust) is frequently contacted by people who want advice about their diet. Very often, particularly just after diagnosis, people feel confused about the advice they are given on healthy eating. They feel insecure about what they are eating and how this may affect their diabetes or they simply do not have enough information about diet. These feelings may hold equally true for family members who will also have a role in the changes to diet that the household may have to make. Very often, people are told that they need to eat healthily, lose weight and to stay away from sugary and fatty foods. This particularly applies to people with Type 2 diabetes and while this advice is not bad advice, it can leave people without the information they need during a stressful time. As one gentleman said “I want to be told what I can eat – not what I can’t”. And what about people with Type 1 diabetes? If you are lucky enough to go on a DAFNE education course or to have an insulin pump, you are taught to count =carbohydrates. If you were diagnosed before 1986 you were automatically taught to count carbs. However, the introduction of ‘Healthy eating’ for the general population resulted in carb counting almost disappearing for people with diabetes. Most of those who had carb counted continued to do so, but there is a whole generation of people using insulin who have never been taught. Perhaps just as importantly, there is a whole generation of health professionals who have not been fully trained in carb counting in order to teach their patients to do it safely and achieve the best blood glucose control possible. In the real world, we cannot suddenly expect this situation to be rectified - simply because of sheer numbers and time. There is evidence that carb counting is beneficial for people taking insulin and equally, that it is important that people with Type 2 diabetes taking tablets are aware of the effects carbohydrates have on blood glucose levels. There are real health benefits from carb counting and IDDT believes that we cannot sit back and do nothing. It is for these reasons IDDT has produced a 4-week Menu Plan prepared by Consultant Dietitian, Dr Mabel Blades and endosed by the NHS. The Menu Plan is not intended to be a substitute for an individual diet plan prepared by a dietitian or other health professional. It is intended to give people ideas about what they can eat – everyday, affordable meals in an easy to look at way. It will be especially useful to anyone who has been newly diagnosed or who has had a member of the family diagnosed. It is based on the principles of healthy eating and could help with weight loss (whether you have diabetes or not!). It provides an introduction to counting carbohydrates and is a stepping stone to learning more about diet and diabetes. n

March sees the beginning of a new exhibition from Norfolk’s, Bircham Bircham Gallery Gallery. This 14 Market Place, Holt pioneering Norfolk, NR25 6BW establishment 01263713312 brings together an outstanding www.birchamgallery.co.uk collection of highly esteemed and established British contemporary artists, as well as promoting and showcasing new emerging talent. Celebrating twenty-five years of success, they are launching a superb new collection of their finest newcomers, who they have selected and represented over the last 12 months. With their experienced and expert eye they individually identify and source new artists, from all over the country. This latest exhibition will include paintings from Stephanie Lambourne, Anne Davies and Stephen Robson. Amongst the ceramics you will find works from Katherina Klugg, Lowrie Davies and Sarah Jenkins. Mathew Harris and Helen Terry are included in those represented by their beautiful textile pieces. Personal favourite, sculptor Celia Smith, adds a flavour of the surreal with her beautiful wire birds. Somehow both haunting and alive, her work is full of breath, movement and sole. Giacometti’s strangely unnerving sculptures come to mind, pieces that represent both the subject matter and the time and context in which they exist. This is a display of incredible talent, insight and skill. So much conveyed with such economy. NEWCOMERS EXHIBITION: 8 MARCH - 2 APRIL
Still in depths of a winter throwing its most destructive forces at us, it is even more important this month, to stride out and defy the elements. As usual there is plenty on offer to lift the spirits and the heart, within the regions bountiful selection of superb and beautiful fine and contemporary art galleries. Heading down south, to Essex, we return again to another favourite, The Aubrey Art Gallery The Aubrey Art Post Office Yard, High Street Gallery. Until the Great Dunmow, Essex, CM6 1AW 29th of March you 01371873133. can catch their “City Buzz” www.aubreyartgallery.com exhibition that includes works from many of their regular artists such as Tony Lockwood, Sue Eaton, John Dobbs and Graham Webber. As always, this diverse and dedicated gallery displays a wealth of serious and poignant observation. Each artist really appears to tell their story as they see it, with no compromise to fashion and popularity. From Lockward’s wistful, transient oils to the raw urgency of Dobb’s frantically harnessed sketches and studies, this exhibition captures and portrays a true sense of personal experience and knowledge. GAINSBOROUGH HOUSE 11 JANUARY – 31 MAY
300 YEARS OF HISTORY 1714 saw the coronation of George I and the birth of the Georgian age and we celebrate this three hundred year anniversary in 2014. The beginning of this important epoch in Sudbury is wonderfully brought to life in an extraordinary contemporary picture of the town: Brewer’s map of Sudbury in 1714. The map, which is owned by Sudbury Town Council, has resided for many years in Suffolk Record Office in Bury St Edmunds. Gainsborough’s House has been delighted to organise the conservation of the map so that it can be publicly displayed for the first time. It can be seen by residents of Sudbury and visitors to the town. It gives us a remarkable glimpse of Sudbury three hundred years ago. WHO MADE IT? It was probably Cornelius Brewer, whose signature can be seen with the inscription on the left hand side. Brewer, of neighbouring Borley, managed the estate of Francis Dashwood in Sudbury. Dashwood and his brother Samuel were silk merchants who had political and commercial links with Sudbury. WHAT WAS IT MADE OF? Brewer’s map was hand drawn on vellum, probably sheep skin or calf skin, using iron gall ink and various shades of watercolour. Iron gall ink is made using iron salts and tannic acid extracted from oak galls (growths on oak trees). The map is in a fair condition for its age, but the high acidity of the ink, fading and marks on its surface and other damage meant that it required some conservation work
before being mounted and framed for display. WHY WAS IT MADE? According to the inscription the map was created to show the extent of Sudbury’s common pastures. At that time the town’s aldermen controlled the town corporation and the commons. Their houses are prominently shown on the map, and together with the elaborately decorated town crest, suggests that they ordered for the map to be made. DOES GAINSBOROUGH’S HOUSE APPEAR ON THE MAP? The early decades of the eighteenth century witnessed the slow transformation of English towns. Medieval wattle and daub constructions became concealed behind brick-built facades. On Brewer’s Map, Gainsborough’s House appears, although it is not clear which House. The Gainsborough family bought the house in 1722 some eight years after the map was made. A fascinating display of the map will be shown at Gainsborough’s House from 11 January – 31 May 2014 and celebrates three hundred years since its creation. sWith grateful thanks to Andrew Phillips who supported the conservation of the map.

WHAT’S THE HISTORY? King’s Lynn was one of England’s most important ports from as early as the 12th century and this maritime past is still very much in evidence today. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the elegant Custom House overlooks the original medieval harbour. ATTRACTIONS At the heart of the medieval old town, magnificent King’s Lynn Minster dominates the Saturday Market Place around which is some fine architecture including the distinctive Trinity Guildhall and historic Town Hall complex. Take a short walk past the grand buildings and merchants’ houses of King Street and Queen Street, towards the magnificent Tuesday Market Place, probably one of England’s grandest squares and home to the Corn Exchange, now a thriving concert hall. A great way to explore the town is to follow the King’s Lynn Maritime Trail. Discover the town’s history as a premier English sea port, the stories of its merchants, ship builders, sailors, fishermen, press gangs, porters and pubs which have played key roles in this history. eastlife.co.uk|85 King's Lynn.indd 119

N
ear the river Great Ouse and on the North Norfolk coast, King’s Lynn is a seaport and market town. Grown rich on trade thanks to its prosperous market places, during the 14th century the town was ranked as England’s most important port for its sea trade with Europe. Its maritime past is still very much in evidence today: fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the elegant Custom House overlooks the harbour. The town’s heritage is reflected in an amazing array of historic buildings and at two magnificent market places: Saturday Market Place, at St Margaret’s Church – designated as a Minster Church in 2011 by the Bishop of Norwich; and Tuesday Market Place, quite possibly one of England’s grandest squares. Combine this with the vibrant town centre and its bustling shopping centre; King’s Lynn really is the ideal destination to enjoy a superb mix of history, shopping and entertainment. Markets It is believed that there was a market taking place in King’s Lynn long before proper records were kept. The oldest recorded instance of a market is to a Sand Market held on the Saturday Market Place in 1104. The first Charter Market is mentioned in a Charter from King John dated 6 September 1205, thus the town has a very strong history of being a market town with a great variety of quality goods available throughout the ages. The King’s Lynn markets are held on Tuesdays and Fridays (with respectively 82 and 37 stalls), and Saturdays (26 stalls). Most of the traders come from Norfolk towns and villages, however some are from Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and places further afar such as Bedfordshire and Essex. Items for sale on each market include ladies’ and men’s fashion, fruits and veggies, fresh meat and seafood, plus books, jewellery, plants, homeware and much more. In recent years, the old Corn Exchange at the Tuesday Market Place has been transformed to become a top entertainment venue, with concerts and
sell-out performances by the country’s top performers. Town centre & Vancouver Quarter Right in the heart of historical King’s Lynn, there’s the ultra-modern Vancouver Quarter shopping centre. he Cambridgeshire Fens lie east of Peterborough and north of Cambridge, sharing boundaries with Lincolnshire and Norfolk, making it an ideal stopping off point. The Georgian Town of Wisbech is the perfect place for a day out or a break. Wisbech is renowned for its elegant Georgian architecture, a legacy from an era when the town was a booming trade centre. You can stroll along the Brinks or round the Crescent to see some fine Georgian houses. You can visit Peckover House on North Brink, once the home of the Peckovers, a Quaker banking family, now in the care of the National Trust and open to visitors from spring to autumn, 5 afternoons a week. A little further along North Brink is a completely different example of Georgian architecture, Elgoods Brewery and gardens which was one of the first Georgian breweries to be built outside London and has stood almost unchanged for more than 200 years. You can sample some of Elgoods’ award-winning real ales, either on a brewery tour or in one of the many Elgoods pubs in town. Wisbech has two museums; the Wisbech & Fenland Museum in the Crescent and the Octavia Hill Birthplace House on South Brink. It also has one of the oldest surviving Georgian theatres in the country. The Angles Theatre has just 112 seats and offers a variety of drama, dance and music in a cosy performance space. Opposite the theatre is the Luxe Cinema, a stylish independent cinema offering film lovers a new experience, with its comfy leather seats and bar. Each of these market towns have strong historic characteristics. Chatteris is a small market town that has grown around the Abbey of St Mary since around 1010. A market place formed in front of the abbey and streets were developed to connect the abbey to other settlements in the Fens. Although there is little sign of the abbey today, Chatteris is still well connected and is an ideal base for touring the Fens and south Cambridgeshire. March like other Fenland towns was once surrounded by marshes. As the land was drained the town grew and prospered. The town centre has an unusual broad street lined with shops and headed by ‘The Fountain’ which was erected in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King
George V and restored in 2002 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of H M Queen Elizabeth II. Whittlesey is situated on the western edge of the Fens, close to the Cathedral city of Peterborough. The town centre is an interesting maze of streets with a variety of well preserved architectural structures spanning several centuries. Whittlesey is a thriving market town and a base for nationally important manufacturing industries such as McCain’s and Hanson Brick. Whether you want a relaxing day exploring the fascinating Cambridgeshire Fens history, discovering its hidden gems or want to explore the great outdoors, there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained in the Cambridgeshire Fens. There are a number of vibrant and ever-growing range of festivals and events on offer, from Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival to the Wisbech Rose Fair. Colchester
T
he city of Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town and is home to some unique heritage and history. It was here, in this city of Essex, that the Emperor Claudius received the surrender of the Celtic Kings to claim the Roman Province of Britannia, including every era since from the Saxon, the Norman, the Medieval, the Tudor, the Stuart, the Georgian, the Victorian to the Modern it has left its mark on the town and added to the richness of its heritage. Roman Colchester probably had a population of 10-12,000 which seems surprisingly small considering its population now of 104,390. However, in those days England had a tiny population and settlements were much smaller than they are today. By Roman standards, Colchester was a large and important town. It was also an important port because of its position near the sea. But it’s not just Colchester’s vast heritage and history that attracts more than 4.5m visitors every year. Colchester today is a thriving, modern town with many great visitor attractions, including the family favourites Colchester Zoo and Colchester Castle. Colchester tourist attractions are just the right place for a day trip - and with so much to see and do - why not stay a while and book a short break or family holiday? Experience everything from the tiniest of creatures such as the Japanese Fish to the biggest of the wild cats at Colchester Zoo. With the Walking Giants that opened in 2012, the zoo is famous for housing 3 out of 4 of the world’s biggest tortoise species! Experience the natural habitat of these magnificent species, inside and outside their enclosure. The new and exciting addition to the zoo is the Koi carp and Japanese Bitterling into a Japanese-influenced exhibit called Koi Niwa. The exhibit is set in the style of a typical Japanese garden with statues, ornaments and waterfalls so visitors are able to engage in a true Japanese experience while gazing at the beautiful fish. The Colne Valley Railway allows you to enjoy a trip on the mile length of line on the original Colne Valley and Halstead Railway. Some of the buildings have been relocated as well as the signal boxes by loving volunteers who have helped to turn this railway ino the stunning attraction it is today. Take a ride with Thomas The Tank Engine, riding on his express coaches and get the chance to meet and ride along with all of his friends. Find out more by going to www.colnevalleyrailway.co.uk for times and prices. Colne Valley Railway, Hedingham Station, Yeldham Road, Castle Hedingham, Essex, CO9 3DZ.

Wymondham
Wymondham
A pretty market town in the Norfolk countryside, Wymondham delights visitors with its old-world charm, imposing Abbey and historic
L
ike many East Anglian towns, Wymondham earned its wealth from wool, but the town has had an eventful past that distinguishes it from its neighbours. In 1549, Robert Kett, Wymondham’s most famous inhabitant, led a peasant rebellion in a protest against the enclosure of common land and managed to hold the city of Norwich for six weeks, until defeated by the King’s forces and hung from Norwich Castle. 65 years later, the Great Fire of Wymondham destroyed about 300 properties including the Market Cross, the vicarage the Town Hall and the schoolhouse. Despite this, ancient buildings such as the Green Dragon pub and many of the houses in Damgate Street have survived. The collapse of the woollen industry in the mid19th century led the town to escape large-scale development. As a result, the town centre remains much as it must have been in the mid-17th century with pretty, narrow streets to wander. Visitors can delve into Wymondham’s fascinating history at the Heritage Museum, but the town’s star attraction is the gigantic twin tower Abbey. Founded in 1107 by William D’Aubigny, who was Chief Butler to King Henry I, stone was shipped across the English Channel from Caen in Normandy for its ambitious construction. Although adapted over the centuries, visitors can still glimpse the magnificent
Abbey’s interiors, catch a recital by the talented choir, and even cheer on rubber ducks in the annual Abbey Duck Race from 2pm on Easter Monday. Wymondham is also the starting point for one of the largest preserved railways in the UK, the Mid-Norfolk Railway. Run entirely by volunteers, the 11.5 mile heritage line to Dereham was opened to tourists in 1995 and operates steam and diesel services. Over Easter weekend children have the opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny, whilst adults’ childhood dreams of driving a locomotive can come true under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Wymondham Railway Station is also home to one of the town’s quirkiest eateries, the railway-themed Station Bistro - a must for any train enthusiasts. Elsewhere in town, the traditional, timber-framed Green Dragon pub with its great beer garden provides tasty fare, The Lemon Tree Café proves the perfect stop for a spot of afternoon tea and cake, and the cosy, award-winning Number Twenty Four Restaurant allows visitors to dine in style. Slightly further afield, historic gastro pub The Boars offers local seasonal food, real ales and a delicious Sunday dinner. Pick up local goods at the weekly Friday market or sample delicious Norfolk foods the third Saturday of every month at Wymondham’s Farmers’ Market. Don’t miss the host of interesting shops in town either, whether it be browsing beautiful gifts and homeware at The Marmalade Tree or visiting the friendly independent Book Fountain for your next great read.

Wymondham Arts Centre Norwich artist Anthea Eames is launching Wymondham Arts Centre’s 2014 season with a solo exhibition of abstract work inspired by the African, Australian and Norfolk landscape. The show runs at Becket’s Chapel from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, April 13 and is open daily, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 12noon to 5pm, free entry. Anthea’s paintings stem from her continuing relationship with the African, Australian and Norfolk landscape. She has lived in Norfolk for 30 years, but before that worked in Zambia and Nigeria as a teacher and illustrator. Her discovery of Australia is more recent and began when her son emigrated in 2007. A new 10ft x 4ft triptych called Australian Goldrush will be completed for the Wymondham show. Anthea’s connection with Africa has been renewed over the last two years by leading women’s art workshops at the Chongoni UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dedza, Malawi, part of the Norwich Dedza project. She returns in May and June this year, training women to design greetings cards drawing inspiration from Chongoni’s Stone Age rock art. Video of her work in Malawi will be included in the Wymondham exhibition. Anthea Eames explained: “I’m really interested in the history of landscape – how human activity has transformed it through time. I do not try to record the subject, but rely on my memory and intuition and imagine that I am looking down on the landscape when I work. I love Norfolk; it’s a wild and beautiful county with gentle colours set under a vast sky, a wonderful contrast to Australia with its intense reds and glowing oranges and deep blue sea.” “I create multi-layered textured surfaces using the earth itself, gathering red and yellow ochres, sand, chalk and shingle from places that have a particular resonance for me, like Winterton beach in Norfolk or the Chongoni area in Malawi. The process involves grinding and mixing these materials with resins to create my own paints.” Wymondham Arts Centre is at Becket’s Chapel, 2 Church Street, Wymondham

Around Burnham Market Holkham Hall is an 18th century country house located adjacent to the village of Holkham, on the north coast of Norfolk, close to Burnham Market. The hall was constructed in the Palladian style for Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester by the architect William Kent, aided by the architect and aristocrat Lord Burlington. Houghton Hall, now the family seat of Sir Robert Walpole’s direct descendant, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, is considered one of the country’s finest Palladian houses. It is situated about 10 miles from Burnham Market. The Hall was designed to house Walpole’s prized collection of Old Master paintings, and the magnificent interiors and furnishings designed by William Kent are also still intact. n

n the beautiful and unspoilt North Norfolk coast, Burnham Deepdale is a village in the civil parish of Brancaster, together with Brancaster Staithe and Brancaster itself. Village life is centred around the harbour and its thriving fishing and sailing community. If you appreciate spending some time surrounded by nature, you may want to explore the endless sandy beaches and tidal salt marshes. Head to Barrow Common to enjoy breathingtaking panoramic views. On the river Burn and near the Norfolk coast, Burnham Thorpe is a small village mostly famous for being the birthplace of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, one of Britain’s greatest heroes. His father, Edmund Nelson, was rector of the village church, and the site of the former rectory is still marked by a roadside plaque. The village’s main public house was built in 1637 and was known as The Plough until 1798, when it was renamed The Lord Nelson in honour of the victory at the Battle of the Nile – Nelson even held a dinner there for the men of the village. The pub survives to this day, just pop in and soak up the historical atmosphere. Walsingham Road, Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, PE31 8HN. 01328738241. www.nelsonslocal.co.uk. ■
