It’s official, October is my favourite month of the year. This issue has been so exciting to write. From exploring colourful autumnal walks to rounding up the region’s biggest bonfire night events, there is so much to look forward too. As a kid and still today Halloween is one of my favourite times of year. The colours, delicious treats and an eerie story or two, I love it and I am looking forward to the many spooky events and ghost tours taking place. Turn to page 21 for Halloween events for the whole family to enjoy. October also holds the excitement that Christmas is just around the corner. If you’ve not yet thought about your office Christmas party read our venue special on page 41 or brush up on your cookery skills in time for the big day with our review of the best cookery schools around on page 35. There are also lessons on how to choose a school for your child, the latest interior trends, wedding venues and St Albans Fashion Week. Wow, what a busy month ahead! Diaries at the ready...

Ely Ghost Tours
O
n the surface Ely looks a very peaceful and tranquil place so it would seem the last place to send chills down your spine. However behind doorways and passages throughout the city there are stories of murder, intrigue and mystery. It is no wonder Ely is reported to be the most haunted small city in Europe. To experience more of Ely’s haunted past join in for one of the city’s immensely popular Ely Ghost Tours. The tours begin at Oliver Cromwell’s House, which is a renowned haunted building dating back to before the 13th Century. As the tour takes you through the dimly lit streets of Ely you may also encounter characters such as the body snatcher in the grave yard, the pale nurse from the old militia hospital, ghosts from famous murders past and of course Black Shuck – a large one eyed black dog dating from Saxon times. On 31 October there is Ghostly Tales Tour at Oliver Cromwell House at 4pm; an opportunity to tour this atmospheric house at dusk and hear the stories of the ghostly encounters as recalled by previous residents, visitors and staff. New for Halloween is Ely’s Riverside Ghost Tour on 31 October at 7.30pm. Encounter the ghostly sightings of Ely’s riverside from the superstitions of the fens to the witches’ trials by water. Then take a boat trip on the Liberty Belle to experience the eerie river at night whilst hearing about further ghostly tales of the river Great Ouse. For more information or to book a group tour contact Tours Advisor on 01353 662062 or visit www.visitely.org.uk.

New development at Waterside Maltings, Suffolk
T
he PJ Livesey Group is not a standard house builder and the new houses and apartments they are developing at Waterside Maltings are not standard either. A Grade II Listed silk mill forms the cornerstone of the scheme on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and Livesey’s skill is in restoring this landmark building and reflecting its history and character across the rest of the development. At Waterside Maltings PJ Livesey is building a mix of spacious apartments, exclusive three storey clapperboard town houses with first floor terraces and luxurious three and four bedroom family homes with bi-fold doors opening onto large gardens.
Director Georgina Livesey said: “Each site we do calls for a special and sympathetic solution. We restore and convert the existing buildings using traditional techniques and then design new build homes to reflect and complement this heritage.” If you would like to own a luxury new home in a historic setting, PJ Livesey invite you to visit Waterside Maltings at Ditchingham to see for yourself why all new developments are not the same. The sales office and show homes are open 10am -5pm Thursday to Monday. For more information on prices and floor plans call 01986 892205

AROUND THE REGION Murder Mystery evening at Castle Acre, Norfolk
Norwich sees 2014 footfall continue to rise
T
N
Who has been ‘dispatched’ at dinner? Who put murder on the menu? Can the super-sleuth diners help track the felon down to get his (or her) just deserts in time for dessert? Expect an evening of great entertainment complemented by a luxury buffet supper.
This is excellent news for Norwich, which is breaking the trend on a regional decline in customers, as well as an even worse picture at national level. These great figures for Norwich are in stark contrast to footfall results across the UK which have seen the third successive month of decline and are down to -0.6% compared to 2013.
368 Theatre Company are assembling all the suspects for an evening of murder, mystery and intrigue with the diners in the pub formed into crime-busting teams to help unravel the riddle and bring the culprit to book.
The Eastern region has faired better, though buoyed by the success of Norwich, the area which includes Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambs have seen a slight decrease with an average drop of -0.1%.
The performance is suitable for ages 15+. Tickets priced £25.
The increase in footfall shows that the number of people visiting and using the city is growing, which is great news for the local economy. Footfall results are continuing to drive sales for local businesses and reflect a similar decline in the vacant shop figures for the city centre, which show the number of empty shop units decreasing to 4.2% in Norwich. This figure is significantly lower than the UK average of 12.2% and is comparable to the figures of the peak of 2008 prior to the recession.
he game is afoot in Castle Acre this October, as an evening of Murder and Mystery is set to ruffle a few feathers at The Ostrich Inn on Saturday 11 October at 7.30pm, with support from the arts and community development charity Creative Arts East.

olchester High School, Essex, has opened the doors of its new Sixth Form Centre to the first cohort of students. Located in a beautiful Victorian building in Oxford Road, the Sixth Form Centre boasts a state-of-theart Science laboratory, a bespoke contemporary common room and a library and study area complete with extensive resources to support students in their studies. The Principal, David Young said: “We are looking forward to working with our new Sixth Form students, to educate them to the very highest standard and help them to gain entry into their first choice universities or equip them for their chosen career field.”
orwich is bucking the national trend and continues to see a year on year increase in footfall and to date the results is up 1.8% in comparison to 2013 (according to Springboard).
Stefan Gurney, chief executive at Norwich Business Improvement District explained “It’s extremely positive to hear that Norwich is continuing to attract an increasing number of visitors and users to the city centre, especially when the national figures are showing an annual decline.” These are exciting times for Norwich; with the Lanes in the running to win the Great British High Street of the Year Award and free Wi-Fi anticipated to go live in the city by the end of the year. The footfall results indicate a positive future for a city, which continues to move from strength to strength.

If you grew up in Essex it’s likely you would’ve of heard horror stories about murders and countless bodies buried among the trees in Epping Forest, what you might not know is that these stories have actually been linked to the regular occurrence of poltergeist activity within the forest. Ghostly sightings of Boudica (Queen of the British Iceni tribe – AD60) haunt the forest, while the headless apparition of a biker, troubled spirit who runs in front of drivers before vanishing and a headless horseman have all been seen near the Wake Arms roundabout. The most famous myth of Epping Forest is Hangman’s Hill. There have been reports of a man being seen in the wooded area and terrifying screams heard here. It is said, that if you leave your car in neutral on the hill, your car will appear to roll upwards towards the tree where people have been hanged – dare to give it a go?
2. The Swan Hotel, Lavenham When staying at the beautiful Swan Hotel thrill seekers may be lucky enough to come face to face with the haunted spirit of a housekeeper who once lived there back when the hotel was a thriving Coaching Inn in the19th Century.
W
e’ve all heard a tale or two about creepy goings-on, but among the historic towns and stately homes in the East of England things really do go bump in the night. If you’re looking for a fright this Halloween we dare you to visit one of these haunted locations…

There’s two rumours surrounding the lady, one being she fell pregnant out of wed-lock and was jilted at the alter, the second she was hoping for a promotion which was not received. Whichever story you choose to believe, they both have the same fatal ending; the woman was found hanging in room 15, then the housekeeping quarters, by one of the Inn’s workers. There have been several reports of sightings from those staying in the room.

3. Borely Rectory, Essex Regarded as perhaps the most haunted house in England, its no surprise that the home has almost a century of haunting tales to be heard. From ghostly appearances to poltergeist activity that ranges from door bells ringing and mysterious footsteps heard to more aggressive behaviour such as glass smashing and a former resident being hurled from her bed, the home has a fascinating history and story to tell. The hauntings were studied by paranormal investigator Harry Price in 1939 and the account was published in his book titled ‘The Most Haunted House in England’.
4. Houghton House & Ampthill Park, Bedfordshire Reports of shadowy figures that watch over you, that once spotted dart off into thin air, sounds of a horse drawn coach regularly pulling up outside the home and the sighting of a young girl standing in the doorway waving have all been reported at Houghton House and the surrounding area. For those intrigued to find out more, the house itself is open to the general public to investigate.

5. Blickling Hall, Norfolk Anne Boleyn is undoubtedly Blickling Hall’s most famous ghost. Some have told the spine tingling tale of her tortured soul dressed all in white, carrying her severed and dripping head as she arrives by coach, also driven by a headless horseman and four headless horses, to the hall. She glides around the hall, rooms and the countless corridors until daybreak. However Anne is not alone. Another ghost of the residence is her father Thomas Boleyn, who engineered her marriage to the monarch. It is said that because of his doings, he lost his daughter and his son and as penance he is required to cross a dozen bridges before cockrow for a thousand years. His route is from Blickling to Aylsham to Burg to Buxton and Coltishall to Meyton to Oxnead and finally to Wroxham. Just like his daughter, he was also beheaded and he carries his head under his arm. If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the activity, most happenings unfortunately do not take place on Halloween, but instead around 19 May, the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution. eastlife.co.uk | 27

Tempt your taste buds
With Christmas just around the corner, why not take the opportunity to brush up on your cookery skills?
W
hether you love it or loathe it, cooking is part of life and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be great at it. As we head towards Christmas, it’s likely many of us will be spending some time in the kitchen.
Whether it’s cooking a traditional feast for the family or perfecting the art of dinner parties and canapés we all want to impress and there’s no easier way to do so than by a day, evening or weekend cookery course.

Serving up a fantastic variety of cookery classes for all levels is The Cookery School at Braxted Park, Essex. No cuisine is left off the menu and you can even practice your dinner party skills – great for the season ahead. Eastlife recently took part in the Moroccan Feast class with experienced chef, writer and food consultant Hulya Erdal, owner of Made by the Chef. As a self-confessed ‘can’t cook, won’t cook’ type I must admit I was a little apprehensive about going along to a class. After only ever having created several little fires and one successful attempt at paella never to be mastered again in the kitchen, I was worried I was out of my depth. The small class began at 9am and after introductions we headed to the kitchen where we spent the day cooking up a feast of laughter and seven Moroccan inspired dishes. The class was of mixed abilities but no matter how advanced or in my case unskilled, no one was left behind. The whole day was a hands-on experience narrated and taught by Hulya, who added her tips and knowledge throughout the day as we peeled, chopped and baked. We began with lamb tagine, accompanied by a spring cous cous, stuffed tomatoes and baba ghanoush, which we tucked into for lunch. After surviving the morning with no fire hazards or injury I was ready to embrace my new-found inner chef. In the afternoon we rustled up a delicious pastilla, fish cakes and almond macaroons. Much to my delight the whole day was a fantastic experience. Everyone, no matter how advanced, embraced fresh recipes and flavours and found a new skill to take away with them. Since the day course I’ve been in the kitchen practicing. I’ve said goodbye to bland food and have started a collection of spices (tip from Hulya, a good spice and herb collection is a must), and my food no longer resembles the remains of a bonfire – watch out Delia there’s a new chef in the making! Courses start from £145 with plenty of options throughout October and November. There’s also a host of Christmas options including corporate entertainment and a Christmas office party. Better still, courses make for the perfect Christmas gift.
EVERYDAY INSPIRATION A cookery course is ideal for sprucing up the same recipes that we sometimes find ourselves growing tired of. Across the region you’ll find plenty of cookery schools that will be able to help you add some flavour to family mealtime. The Cambridge Cookery School offers a range of courses at different lengths. You can try a day class, weekend or develop your skills with an eight-week course. Topics range for steak, sauces, fish, bread, butchery and more. There are also courses available for teens and children. Meanwhile the Delightful Tea Bake School in Great Wakering, Essex has recently launched its supper clubs run by Indian food expert Padmaja Kochera. This will be the first time that residents have been given the chance to book onto a local supper club experience, which is already hugely popular in cities across the UK. Guests are invited to enjoy a delicious Indian feast in lovely surroundings, with free-flowing wine and hopefully, free-flowing conversation. The concept of ‘social dining’ is a popular within America and is now developing in the UK. If you’re looking to make a weekend of your cooking experience indulge in a stay at The Grange Farmhouse, two miles from Fakenham, Norfolk. Ideal for food loving families and large groups of friends, holidaymakers can book a cookery course with owner Na Hansell, which takes place in the property’s well-equipped kitchen. Up to six people can take part in a hands-on cookery workshop, or 18 can watch a demonstration and enjoy the resulting creations. Courses include ‘Everyday Inspiration’, ‘Asian Flavours’ and ‘Cocktails and Canapés’. The courses are half or full-day and aim to provide a bit of culinary inspiration. With the emphasis on simple ingredients, fresh flavours and plenty of herbs and spices, the dishes are easy to recreate as there are no complicated techniques, just some clever tips and easy, clearly written recipes. Prices from £50 per person.

TEACH THEM EARLY Cooking is an experience that can be shared by the whole family and one of the greatest challenges and joys is perhaps teaching our children how to cook. Not only does it make for fun quality time but teaches them the importance of healthy eating. At the Inspired Gourmet Cookery School, Milton Keynes, it’s not just adults that are having all the fun. The school has developed a number of children’s cookery classes. On 28 October kids aged between 8 to 10 and 11 to 13 can take part in a ‘Children’s Cookery Class’. The class is designed to encourage responsibility for their own nutrition and food choices. They will try their hand at a range of dishes including homemade pizza, Mexican fajitas and chocolate chip cookies. A teen cookery course is also available on 28 October, which helps young adults learn and practice new cooking skills, while a ‘Parent and Child Cookery Course’ takes place 20 December. When it comes to finding a cookery course the possibilities are endless. There is something to suit everyone and at a reasonable price too. Whatever you may be looking to achieve from your day behind the stove, a fun and informative experience is guaranteed. Though with your new skills and culinary tricks just be prepared to be cooking Christmas dinner for the foreseeable future!

EDUCATION
DANCE AND DRAMA Its not uncommon for a child to love dance and drama but if your child is showing signs of being a star in the making there are plenty of specialist dance and theatre schools across the region to help them progress. The Anglia Region Theatre School (also known as ARTS), located in Norfolk, offers everything from ballet and tap to disco and street dancing classes. Children begin ballet when they’re just over two years of age with many pupils continuing their dance stage. Tel:01508 471792 Bedfordshire School of Dance and Drama offers both syllabus and non-syllabus classes. Children younger than five enjoy imaginative classes that teach dance in a play-based way. Older children choose from ballet, modern theatre dance, tap, and street jazz. Tel: 01525 403454 For those with a passion for dance, DanceEast, located on the Ipswich waterfront in Suffolk runs a diverse schedule of dance classes as well as being a performance space. Starting from as young as one years, children can take Tots & Co before moving on to classes such as ballet, jazz, and musical theatre dance. DanceEast has also developed a programme for children with additional needs. Tel: 01473 295230
SPORTS Physical education is vital in every child’s life to help them grow and develop their health but if your child is a keen sportsman it’s important to choose a school that will offer the facilities to help them achieve more. The Leys School in Cambridge is an Independent Co-Educational boarding and day School for 11-18 year old pupils. Though the curriculum focuses on core subjects students are encouraged to expand their horizons with Humanities, Drama, Art, Design, Music and Sport. The school is home to fantastic sporting facilities for those with a passion for sport. The Physical Education Department at the school is based in the Sports Complex, which includes a large sports hall with sprung wooden floor, a weights and cardiovascular gym, a projectile range with indoor cricket nets, three glass-back squash courts and an aerobics area. The classroom, which is fitted with a data projector and interactive whiteboard is also situated in the Sports Complex Outside. Facilities include a full size floodlit astro turf pitch which provides the base for invasion games which converts to twelve tennis courts in the summer. A 25-metre heated indoor swimming pool is available throughout the year and is fully equipped for competitive swimming, water polo and canoe polo. Tel: 01223 508900 eastlife.co.uk | 51

TUITION AND EXTRA SUPPORT
READING AND THE LIBRARY
When a little extra help is needed, it’s important to know that the school you have chosen will guide and support your son or daughter.
English and mathematics is still widely regarded as the most important subjects in every curriculum, which is why many schools across the region are expanding and improving their facilities.
Most schools across the region offer learning support and extra tuition to help your children in areas, which they find more challenging. The Oxford House School in Colchester is a great example of learning development and support. The use of subject specialist teaching at Upper School enables all pupils to benefit from expert tuition in all subjects. Specialist teaching rooms for art, technology, science and craft as well as ICT, dance and music are set aside to give the pupils the facilities needed to take these subjects to an advanced level. To complement the focused learning programme pupils are offered "after-school" support to prepare for external examinations at aged eleven. Small classes enable all pupils to benefit from individual support from the class teacher and all pupils are constantly monitored and assessed. However, any pupil having difficulty within the class is assessed by the Special Needs Co-ordinator and if necessary, given extra support. Tel: 01206 576686.
Last month Culford School in Bury St Edmunds, a HMC co-educational school for boys and girls aged 2¾ to 18 with boarding available from age 7, ceremoniously broke ground on the new, landmark library with a generous support of donors, Governors, parents and staff as part of The Campaign for Culford. This marked the latest stage of a £2.2 million project that is set to transform the lives of Culford pupils for years to come. The landmark library will provide Culford with a suite of exceptional new study facilities, including flexible study areas across the mezzanine and ground floors facilitating both group and individual study, a 80seat lecture theatre for talks from teachers, authors and visiting speakers, over 10,000 books and stateof-the art internet access to allow for online research and discovery. The Library will be an inviting space where pupils can study, share ideas, research and investigate; a place where they can fulfil their potential as independent learners. It will also be available at selected times for the local Culford community to use so its benefit will be felt well beyond Culford's gates. Tel: 01284 385306

A FASHION FRENZY HITS ST ALBANS
M
ove over New York, Milan, Paris and London, St Albans is sealing its stylish city status with the return of the hugely popular St Albans Fashion Week.
Taking place 27 October to 2 November, St Albans Fashion Week (SAFW) will see St Albans Cathedral become home to the longest indoor catwalk in the UK, transporting guests to the exhilarating and glamorous world of fashion and beauty with a stunning show profiling local retailers. Last year’s debut SAFW boosted shop sales and attracted more than 2,500 visitors. This year the spectacular Cathedral Catwalk Show returns with two further shows, a 1930s-themed Luxe Show, which will take place at Porsche Centre Hatfield and Hatfield House will be the setting for a Luxury Wedding Event.
Numerous fashion and beauty events will take place in the city. Visitors of all ages can be in vogue with a styling seminar and high tea run by John Lewis, a charity swap shop, pop up beauty and hair stations and a pop up barbers and bar. The event is held during half term week and childcare facilities will be available throughout the week so mums can enjoy being styled and pampered too. This year’s SAFW will have a special focus on design students and graduates, with fashion business masterclasses, a presence at the Cathedral Catwalk Show and Young Designer of the Year awards. The award will be one of ten presented in December in a celebration of excellence at the Fashion and Beauty awards. Turn the page for a lowdown on the hottest events of the week...

YOUR GUIDE TO BEING FROW THIS MONTH Luxe Fashion Show, Porsche Centre Hatfield, Monday 27 October A live swing band and Martini bar will transform the showroom at sponsor’s Porsche Centre Hatfield into a scene from the 1930s. Elegance and sophistication will be the theme of the evening as cocktail dresses, tailored tuxes and beautiful lingerie are modelled in the Luxe Fashion Show. Luxury Wedding Event, Hatfield House, Wednesday 29 October The success of last year’s wedding sequence at the Cathedral Catwalk Show has led to the launch of a Luxury Wedding Event. In contrast to a traditional wedding fair, guests will be part of the entire wedding experience. A catwalk show will profile every aspect of a wedding from beautiful gowns by designers including Jenny Packham, bridesmaid dresses, grooms’ tailoring and bridal accessories, through to outfits for guests, honeymoon attire and swimwear. Guests can meet stylists and the people behind all the other elements of a wedding at a champagne reception, while listening to music from wedding bands and performers. Portions of the room will be styled with a variety of themes so guests can
experience the different types of wedding they could have. The event is sponsored by destination specialist Kuoni with the opportunity for guests to win a luxury trip. Winter Blossoms Add a festive flower to your wintery celebration
S
ummer may be over but that doesn’t mean your wedding bouquet or flower arrangements need to be boring. This time of year is perfect for creating beautifully natural and gorgeously smelling flower displays for your big day and there’s certainly no shortage of possibilities that reflect the winter season.
Natural accents
For a bouquet you just can’t stop smelling or a centre piece that adds natural aroma to the air ask your florist to add an extra dimension to your flowers by mixing touches of sage, rosemary and silvery Dusty Miller leaves. You’ll get a frosty effect that reflects the season while breaking up an all-white or red palette, plus it will smell delicious. Alternatively you can think outside the flowerbed and bring in a few non-floral elements, such as white snowberries or viburnum, hypericum or pepper berries to a bouquet or arrangement, which will add serious seasonal appeal. Some brides are even adding dramatic feathers to their flowers and most are asking for the boutonnieres to echo their multi-textured bouquets.
On budget
If you want to be eco-friendly on your wedding day and make the most of your wedding budget, then you should choose seasonal flowers for your decorations. But what flowers are on offer in the autumn and winter season? For autumn, hydrangeas are
a firm favourite. Hydrangeas come in spectrum of colours not just blues and pinks. Many winter weddings have incorporated white and green hydrangeas wrapped in hessian for an extra edge. If you’re going for an antique look then try hydrangeas in a dusky lilac shade, a classic option for that vintage feel.
Festive fun
A winter wedding is a great time of year to make the most of seasonal elements such as pinecones, holly or evergreens. These flowers are a simple and effective way of adding a festive touch to your wintery celebration. Using white, green or red flowers will instantly add a Christmassy look and feel. For winter, berried ivy is fantastic for a Great Gatsby themed wedding. Team with vintage birdcages and pearls for a truly glamorous look. Consider using Christmas roses for your bouquet. Despite the name, the Christmas rose actually has no relation to the real thing but can be used to add a subtle, yet elegant look to your winter bouquet. Whatever blossom you choose just remember that your bouquet is an important part of your outfit and will be the most photographed flower on the day, so research and choosing an arrangement that fits with not only your décor but the style of your dress is key.

ich colours, roaring log fires and hopefully a sprinkling of snow, a winter wedding is both magical and romantic. It’s the perfect opportunity to embrace the season and all the delights it brings from icy glistening whites to Christmas berry reds, a winter wedding lends itself to show stopping décor. But before you go ahead and choose your theme, finding the right venue that will be able to bring your winter wonderland vision to life is a must.

Historic beauty

Martin Lewis Holiday Hangover I
f you took a break over the summer, some simple checks could help you save money now and for future holidays. So here’s my holiday hangover checklist. Flight delayed by over 3hrs this summer (or any time since 2008)? EU reg 261/2004 means you’re entitled to £100-£480 per person compensation, regardless of the cost of the trip, even for flights going back to 2008, if it: - Was an EU flight - ie, any where from an EU airport or to one if an EU airline. - Arrived over 3 hours late or was cancelled. - Was the airline’s fault, which covers pretty much anything barring extraordinary circumstances such as air-traffic strikes, bad weather and volcanoes. Print 405 holiday snaps for ‘free’. Come back with a camera full of unforgettable pictures? Many online developing firms offer 40-100 prints free for newbies, though you pay between 99p and £3 for delivery. Total up all the free print deals and you can actually get 405 free ones. For example www.boots.com offers 40 6”x4” for 99p delivery or www.jessops.com gives 100 6”x4” for £2.25 delivery using the code MSEJP100. Check the PAO number on your suncream before throwing it away. The period after opening (PAO) number will be on the bottle - many are safe to use up to 18 months later, provided they’re stored right so don’t chuck it unnecessarily. Got Euros, dollars or even colón left over from the summer? Changing currency back is very expensive, especially for small amounts. So if it’s a country you’ll revisit even in a couple of years, it’s likely best to hold onto it (worth putting it in your overseas wal-
let (yes, I’m that nerdy). If not, there are two tricks to changing it back for the best deal: - Use the buyback comparison at www.travelmoneymax.com to find best rates - Find a friend/colleague who’s going where you went and offer to exchange with them. Use the spot FX rate at www.xe.com and you both win. Stung by hefty insurance when picking your car hire up? Let me guess, you booked cheap car hire, turned up and they fear-sold you into paying 10 euros a day extra for car hire excess insurance? It happens all the time. The way round it is to get a standalone policy before you go (you can even get an annual policy to cover the whole year’s hire). To find the cheapest, use www.moneymaxim.co.uk. Check your passport and EHIC sell-by dates now. Thousands were hit by passport office delays this year, causing some to miss their breaks. If your passport is nearly at renewal, do it now while you’ve plenty of time before you next go (you’ll get the extra months added on). It’s one less thing to sort, and once it’s done, you’re good for the next ten years. While you’re at it, check the ‘valid by’ date on your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - if it goes before your next holiday renew it now. The big rule for renewing though is DON’T GOOGLE - for both these, imposter sites unnecessarily charge you more than you should pay. Instead the official sites to use are www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport and www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/ EHIC. omebuyers are being given an exciting opportunity to own a new property in Bedfordshire following the launch of a brand new phase of homes at David Wilson Homes’ popular Bedford Meadows development in Kempston. The phase offers a stunning selection of one and two bedroom apartments, perfect for first time buyers, as well as traditional three and four bedroom homes ideal for the growing family. This new selection will ultimately provide a total of 71 homes to the area, underpinning nearly 150 jobs for local people. Chris Hatfield, managing director at David Wilson Homes South Midlands said: “We are really excited about launching our new phase of homes at Bedford Meadows. The current development has already proved extremely popular and we look forward to providing more of the high-quality homes with which David Wilson Homes has become synonymous.” Bedford Meadows was recently chosen by the NHBC as the ideal location for filming part of its recruitment drive video which has now been published on the NHBC website.
Chris continued: “Bedford Meadows was the ideal location for the NHBC recruitment video because it demonstrates a broad selection of David Wilson home-styles, all of which have been specifically designed to fit in with the local area’s style and charm.” Bedford Meadows is located on Woburn Road in Kempston, on the western edge of Bedford. With local schools within walking distance and a new bypass connecting the development to several major road links including the M1 and A1 it is the ideal choice for families and commuters alike. The development is part of Westford Village, a destination which brings together a number of new home developments from sister companies Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes. Located in idyllic rural Bedfordshire, between Bedford and Milton Keynes, Westford Village will ultimately provide more than 2,700 homes and employment and community facilities. Create a decor-licious home
A
s the leaves fall and the new season arrives so does a brand new interior look and feel. To keep you on trend in the home this season, Abbi Pitt, owner of vintage inspired home wares company Shabby Abbi’s Boutique in Sutton, Cambridgeshire gave us the lowdown... Summer has now passed into the background to make way for our new season - autumn. The season when sunsets come sooner and sunrises later, temperatures fall, floral blooms fade, a reappearance of logs crackling on a fire and leaves transform into a beautiful array of golden colours that provide the ideal colour palette for the perfect autumn interior scheme.
Woodland wonder
It is a continually growing trend to bring a taste of the outside into our homes. More and more pieces are coming into the shops that have been influenced by nature, whether it be its shape or colour. A trend that we’re continuing to see is the ‘Rustic Woodland’ theme and I’ve noticed that there is a much stronger influence of the trend this season. This scheme is ideal for adding character even to really modern spaces. The use of natural materials is also very ‘in’ this season and this is the perfect theme to 78 | eastlife.co.uk
combine these two trends to create a warm and homely atmosphere. When planning a woodland scheme it is key that you keep to a colour palette of warm earthy tones and use natural materials throughout. Using textures is also key to achieving that cosy rustic feel. Using a mix of moss greens, burnt oranges, reds, ochres, and warm neutrals will provide you with the perfect colour scheme. To add interest to the room introduce patterns that feature trees, leaves, countryside scenes, tweeds and woodland creatures. Add texture using natural woods, knitted throws and cushions. Use logs as a feature in the room either stacked on shelves, in an alcove or a basket. There’s plenty of cute woodland decorative accessories in the shops this season to choose from such as this Owl Table Light and Tweed Applique Deer Cushion, both from Dunelm Mill (pictured above). Adding accessories to the room will help pull the whole scheme together to give a unified look.
Lavender and yellow
The next trend that is popular this autumn is focusing on two colours – lavender and yellow. Both these colours have made a big return in the shops this season and are perfect together. Used as their bright shades they are ideal for a bold, vibrant modern scheme. If used in pastel shades they are prefect for a pretty vintage scheme. I have seen lots of new fabrics and wallpapers using faded florals in vary-
HOME & GARDEN
ing shades of mauves, lilacs and lavenders. These naturally lend themselves to a gorgeous romantic vintage scheme. When planning a vintage scheme use pretty period colours such as mauves, primrose yellows, smokey lavenders and taupes. Choose a pretty wallpaper with a faded vintage patina and a floral pattern, such as one by Albany Wallpapers (pictured above). Use this as a feature on a wall with the most prominence in the room such as where the head of the bed is or where there’s a fireplace. Paint the walls with a toning colour from the wallpaper.
These are the two main trends that I consider to be the key looks for interiors this season. However, it is not always essential to follow the trends. We all have our own tastes and our own creativity so when it comes to decorating our home, it is an opportunity to embrace our own style and decorate in a way that represents our personality. That way you really can make your house a home! Shabby Abbi Boutique specialises in beautiful handpainted furniture, vintage china and handmade home accessories. Further details at www.facebook.com/shabbyabbiboutique
Choose key pieces of furniture that go well with a vintage style such a wrought iron bed or a painted dresser. Mis-matching patterns is perfect for the vintage style. When teaming patterns together, keep it to three key colours, otherwise it will become too cluttered and distract the eye. You can do this by adding a combination of cushions in pretty fabrics in a variety of textures and patterns.
Rustic Woodland Shopping List (left): Paints are Farrow and Ball – Cooking Apple Green, Calke Green and Picture Gallery Red, Tweed Throw and Cushions – Dunelm Mill, Tweed Curtains – Dunelm Mill, Bird Ornament – Dunelm Mill, Squirrel Cushion – John Lewis, Logs Wallpaper – Wallpapers Direct, Stags Head – Marks and Spencers, Owl Table Lamp – Dunelm Mill, Stag Head Applique Cushion – Dunelm Mill, Acorn Doorstop – Dunelm Mill, Albany Richmond Wallpaper – Wallpapers Direct.
Add some pretty vintage accessories such as flowers, vases and vintage china. Adding accessories and textiles to the room, gives you a chance to add a splash of colour so as to make them really stand out in the room. Choose soft lighting to create a romantic feel. Also add a large statement mirror that can not only work as a feature but it helps to create an illusion of space.

Top tips for preparing your garden for winter I
t’s almost that time of year again when we have to say goodbye to lazy summer days in the garden and face the fact that winter is on its way. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s all over until next spring. Though the colour may have faded from your flowerbeds, autumn is a busy time in the garden when major prep work must be taken to ensure a blossoming garden the following year. Here are our five top tips of the big clean up:
Clean the greenhouse
To reduce pest and diseases throughout the winter, it’s important to give the greenhouse a good spring clean, yes in autumn! Remove plants and sweep out any debris, disinfect surfaces and clean the glass. It’s a great opportunity to clean any other pots you have lying around too so that you can prepare to plant vegetables that grow in winter such as broad beans and asparagus.
Maintain the lawn
September is the ideal month to give your lawn a little TLC. If hosting BBQs and the kids paddling pools have taken its toll, autumn is the time to lay the ground work for next summer.
Remove any weeds and moss and add a feed to prepare the lawn for the winter. It’s also the perfect time to lay new turf, as it will have plenty of time to establish before the following summer.
Planting
The autumn is an ideal time to plant evergreens. The soil will be soft and not yet frozen from cold winters, while there’s no risk of the summer sun drying out the plant.
Tidy equipment
Over the last few years it has been known that even the end of September can be a scorcher so you may be hesitant to put away the furniture just yet. However it’s vital that you start thinking about how to store your garden furniture and equipment. Give all items a good thorough clean, cover and store in a waterproof location. You’ll be thankful next summer when everything is still looking shiny and new.
Cover the pond
Falling leaves can make pond water dark and murky. To ensure water remains clear throughout the winter fit a net across the area and secure safely with pins or bricks.

HEALTH
Your Support T
hough breast cancer is an illness supported year round October is the official awareness month and across the region the community is getting together to help raise awareness and money for the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Breast Cancer Care has made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help so it’s time to wear pink and join the fight against cancer. Coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness month Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), the dedicated charity for Addenbrookes and the Rosie hospitals, is re-launching its appeal to raise additional funds for breast cancer treatment, care and research at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal (formerly the Pink Rose Appeal) has been named as such to highlight the direct benefit the appeal provides for patients at their local hospital. This year ACT hopes to raise £70,000 for a new ultrasound scanner and vital research into breast medicine at the Cambridge Breast Unit based at Addenbrookes. People in the local community and beyond are invited to get together with family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students and hold an afternoon tea party on Friday 24 October 2014 to help raise money to benefit local breast cancer patients. It’s easy to get involved with some sweet options available. You could hold a themed tea party with a vintage style, go all out pink or opt for a Mad Hatter theme, decorate cookies and cakes, arrange a bake-off competition with friends or raffle cakes.
Alternatively, if people are unable to hold their own event, ACT is holding a hands-on cookery demonstration with a twist in partnership with the Cambridge Cookery School on Friday 24 October from 6.30pm-9pm. Participants will learn how to make and decorate scrumptious cupcakes just like the professionals. The ticket is £25 per person and includes a glass of Prosecco, professional cookery tuition and tasty treats to take-away. Places can be booked by calling 01223 217757 or emailing act@addenbrookes.nhs.uk. Former Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Patient, Alison Saunders, 46, from Saffron Walden, said: “I felt so proud for getting through my breast cancer treatment. The staff at Addenbrooke’s are amazing, but the additional support from fundraising can really make all the difference.” It’s survivors like Alison that makes every little event worthwhile and it’s now easier than ever before to raise money with Breast Cancer Care’s latest campaign ‘Pink Friday’. Dress down at work for a donation or take it after hours and have a pink night in at home, donating what you’d spend on a night out to Breast Cancer Care. Your ‘Pink Friday’ can be as fancy or as fuss free as you like. There’s top tips, ideas and useful bits and bobs available to download at www.breastcancercare.org.uk. If you don’t have time to host a tea party or ‘Pink Friday’ there’s still plenty of ways to donate. Get involved by sponsoring someone taking part in a 5 or 10km run, make a donation on the website or shop for one of the many pink accessories that are available online or in high street stores.

W
ith the Perkins Great Eastern Run only weeks away we take a look at the latest news from one of the UK’s fastest growing marathons.
Time to shine
This year’s marathon will take place 12 October at 10.30am. Show your support by spectating or sign up for a last minute place by midnight 6 October.
Fay Dovey and Aaron Ratcliffe, from Tonge Moor and Smithills respectively, are taking their two-yearold daughter Maya on the fun run, together with their son, Max, who is aged just one.
Joining over 7,000 runners at The Embankment at the start of the race will be inspirational runner Steve Way, who has chosen to take part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run as a warm-up race ahead of the IAU 100km World Championships in Qatar this November. Steve finished 10th in July’s Commonwealth Games marathon and set a new record for a British runner over 40 years of age when he clocked a time of two hours 15 minutes and 16 seconds. His impressive feat led to selection to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the first time at the IAU 100km World Championships and Steve sees Peterborough’s half marathon as the perfect race to help prepare him for his November challenge. Steve said: “The Perkins Great Eastern Run is the ideal half marathon for me to enter as it’s a month before I go out to Qatar and more importantly the route is flat and fast. I did some research on what I thought would be the best overall race for me to compete in and the Great Eastern has it all. “I love residential routes and I’m especially looking forward to running through the historic city centre, which I’m told is the icing on the cake on what is an excellent day for runners and everyone that comes out to support them.”
Joining Steve in this year’s marathon is a local family in order to raise funds for the charity Shine.
Described by her parents as the most happy, smiley and clever little girl they know, Maya has defied doctors ever since her birth. Maya was born five weeks premature at the Royal Bolton Hospital with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and rushed to Manchester Children’s Hospital. In the first three months following her birth she had five operations and contracted meningitis, which left her fighting for her life. Despite this and many more trips to the hospital to help her with her epilepsy, Maya has overcome every hurdle. Her family hope that she will have her first self-propelling wheelchair for the fun run, enabling her to do some of the hard work for herself. Maya might even be able to wheel herself – or even walk – over the finish line this year. Now living in Whittlesey in Peterborough, Maya and her parents took part in last year’s fun run and raised £690 for Shine. This year they want to raise even more. Fay said: “Without Shine, we would not have our family. We want to say a great big “thank you” to everyone at Shine for all they do. We hope the money we raise helps Shine to help other families and individuals just like us who need their help.” Eastlife would like to wish every one taking part the best of luck and success.

When Libby Mitcheson-Smith’s weight put her life at risk she turned to Alizonne for help. Today she’s thankful to tell her story...
“T
hough I am usually quite a private person I believe it is important to share my Alizonne journey as it was fundamental to my recovery and quite literally saved my life,” explains Libby. “Over the last few years I have been battling numerous medical conditions. I had a full hip replacement aged 46 and post-operation I was unable to get fully mobilised. At this time I suffered multiple complications, which at one stage left me quadriplegic. “In 2012 as I was learning to walk again, I suffered a stroke which left me paralysed down my left hand side. In the aftermath of the stroke, I had high blood pressure, was constantly tachycardic and my liver function was severely compromised. This left me prone to infection and I was hospitalised with pneumonia on several occasions. During one of these episodes I was given steroids to help fight the infection and this gave me sudden onset type 2 diabetes. “With my medical issues, being unable to work after having run my own successful business, and the loss of my sister to breast cancer I became extremely depressed and developed an unhealthy relationship with food. Being confined to a wheelchair, needing carers to live at home and frequently hospitalised I piled on the weight, compounding my existing medical problems. “Then in February 2013 I had a routine operation to repair a double hernia. The surgery went well but during the operation I developed breathing difficul-
ties and ended up in Critical Care. During this time, I saw many doctors and consultants and constantly felt judged for my weight and that they thought some of my problems were self-inflicted. “When I was discharged from Critical Care I decided that I was going to ‘take fat off the table’. “I found Alizonne, through my sister-in-law, at this stage I was 15 stone 5 pounds and a petite 5’2” knowing I needed to lose weight but unable to exercise. There was also the slight issue of the nearest Alizonne clinic being a two and a half hour car journey away, which meant a five hour round trip every week. “From day one I knew this was the programme for me and over the next 40 weeks, following the prescribed nutritional plan and having the fantastic body contouring treatments, I lost 7 stone and 4 pounds. I also had the constant reassurance that I was being monitored throughout my programme by the clinic’s doctors. “I still have some medical conditions but my life and health have been transformed. Today I am out of the wheelchair and able to walk with a stick, my liver function has returned to normal my blood pressure and heart rate are also both normal and I am cured of diabetes. “I believe that without Alizonne and the wonderful support of the team at Cambridge I would not be how I am today. Alizonne I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Tel: 01954 488 008 www.alizonnecambridge.co.uk eastlife.co.uk | 97

n the autumn many of us are tempted to move inland and leave the delights of the coast until the warmer weather returns. However, I would like to urge you to venture towards the rolling seas and breaking waves once more. During October the Naze Tower Galleries will be hosting a selection of superb solo and group shows. So head to Essex this month and embrace the sea breeze and the gallery with a difference. Standing bold on the attractive coastline of Waltonon the-Naze, the Naze Tower is an eighty-six foot historical landmark and visitor attraction. Over its eight floors in addition to the gallery, you will also find a museum dedicated to the Tower and Naze, a warm and welcoming tearoom and a roof-viewing platform with spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. Four powerful collections of carefully selected photographs, paintings and linocuts are exhibited on walls flanking several floors of gallery space. Alan Bedding, Angenita Hardy-Teekens, Penny Berry and Robert Mowle individually provide a visual feast of subject matter and media that is sure to delight, inspire and sustain us during the shorter days ahead. Alan and Robert’s beautiful crystal clear photographs both capture familiar subjects and yet por-
tray them with subtle uniqueness. Precious, transient moments are stilled within their lenses and magically recreated with intense tones and colours. Robert’s atmospheric views of sea, sky and all between are a perfect compliment to Alan’s calm, colourful and uplifting observations of nature and man. Further enriching this harvest of colour, Penny’s paintings and Angenita’s original printmaking bring together texture, line and mark that continue to radiate the same warmth and energy. Golden fields, luscious grass and beautifully depicted darting and chirping birds all contribute to a wonderful sense of harmony. More paintings, original prints and photographs can be found in this month’s group exhibition. In addition you will also be able to enjoy a collection of glass, ceramics and jewellery. Look out for the wonderful silver creations from Sandpiper Designs. Finish your day with a warming cup of tea or coffee and treat yourself to beautiful panoramic coast views. Nick Wells, from The Apex, said: “It is always a delight to put the series of classical concerts together. I am particularly pleased with this programme which includes some hugely popular and attractive pieces of music alongside some real surprises; for example, the London Mozart Players and Tasmin Little will perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons while the ever-exciting and completely brilliant Aurora Orchestra will be joined by Bjork’s percussionist, Manu Delago, for a programme that includes his duet for toothbrushes and a jazz ballet for spoons, dishcloths, sieves and saucepans!” This year marks the second year in a row that Sodexo Prestige has chosen to sponsor the Classical Programme. The company is catering partner at The Apex and is going to be offering pre and postconcert dining. The Classical Programme starts on 7 October and runs through until April 2014.

The grounds are open to the public all year round whilst the Castle building (Gatehouse) is open to the public during Open Days in the summer months. The Castle is a popular location for weddings. Hertford Museum is a great place to learn more about this beautiful town. Located on Bull Street, the museum cares for in excess of 80,000 objects. This month contemporary images captured by local photographer Dennis Preston will be on display until 11 October. For an overnight or weekend visit check out the latest entertainment at Hertford Theatre. You’ll find a jam-packed programme of theatre, music, arts and film screenings throughout the year. Food & Drink During the day the cafes, pubs and restaurants such as Baroosh and Lussmanns are packed with mums and shoppers enjoying a leisurely lunch or coffee. In the evening Hertford has an impressive nightlife. If you’re thinking of heading out into the town one evening try cocktails at The Snug or The Dog and Whistle for a quieter drink before heading off to
Cinnabar for a night of dancing. For something a little more relaxed visit The Old Barge on the river, which hosts a pub quiz every Sunday. Sleeping For a relatively small town Hertford has a number of hotels. The Hertford House Hotel on Fore Street is ideal for guests looking to be in the heart of the town. Offering stylish bedrooms guests can dine at the hotel’s restaurant and then head to the bar for drinks. The Salisbury Arms also on Fore Street is a popular choice. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere and traditional features, the hotel is a great place to stay. The Dog and Whistle and Cinnabar also offer accommodation. What’s on?
