Plan the Perfect Wedding Our guide aims to help you plan every aspect of your special day
F
rom budget planning to traditions and wedding symbols to the rings, choosing the perfect veune, finding your dream dress and where you may like to consider for your honeymoon, let East Weddings become your guide to planning a stress free wedding. You’ll find tonnes of inspiration and suppliers to browse within your area plus top tips for making sure your day runs smoothly.
Little details
There are endless points that need attention right at the beginning, and you should start with that all important decision of booking the church or 6
registry office. Saturdays are always popular so, if it’s your intention to get married on the weekend, you will need to fix it at least a year in advance. Again, for similar reasons book caterers and the reception venue at the same time, even if you’re not sure of guest numbers. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry!
Guests
Deciding how many people to invite is the next step and should be taken jointly by both families. Tact and diplomacy are needed where one ‘side’ wants to import a coach-load of thirsty, distant relatives but is
unspecific about who is going to pay. Likewise when a divorced parent declares “If she’s coming, then I’m not,” compromise is the key.
Hire a pro
With so much to plan it’s not surprising that some couples opt for a professional. Don’t be worried that you’ll miss out on the planning, you’ll still have plenty of involvment but with much less stress. Your wedding planner will be on-hand to help with any dilemmas and offer her expert advice and styling techniques.
CHECKLIST
WEDDING PLANNER CHECKLIST 1. Set a date and then make arrangements to see either the vicar or the registrar. 2. Book the caterers and the reception venue. 3. Draw up a guest list with the help of both families. 4. Book your honeymoon. 5. Choose your bridesmaids, best man and ushers. 6. Shop until you drop for your wedding dress, bridesmaids’dresses, accessories and the wedding rings. 7. Book all the transport required, the photographer/ video, hairdresser, beautician and order the cake. 8. Send out your wedding invitations. 9. Prepare your wedding present list. 10. Organise floral arrangements, bouquets etc. 11. Keep track of who accepts/declines invitations. 12. Finalise numbers for the reception, notify caterers, hold a wedding dress rehearsal and finally re-check all details from the cars to the cake and from the flowers to the photography.
Organisation
When it comes to planning a wedding there are a lot of things to consider. Being organised is the best skill you can have. Keep a spreadsheet of everything you need to do and list the dates of when you need to book by and the date of payments both deposit and total amount. A spreadsheet will become your best friend during the wedding planning process, it’s great for staying on top of every detail and expenditure.
Family & friends
With the book-ahead-basics done, it’s then time to choose your bridesmaids, best man, ushers and page boys - and to spend time on one of the nicest tasks; shopping for the wedding dress and your bridesmaids dresses. You can rely on your bridesmaids to take a lot of the pressure off, they will be happy to get involved with planning and you can assign them special tasks on the big day so you don’t have to worry about the minor details.
Paper & presents
Arrange wedding stationery, including save the dates, invitations and Order of Service sheets.
Save the dates should be sent a year to eight months in advance followed by the invitation three to four months before the wedding. Drawing up a wedding present list is one of the most enjoyable chores, so make sure you make the most of it. It’s no longer taboo to ask for money as a gift, you’ll be able to find lots of kind poems to inlcude on your invite online.
Final stages
The final stages include letting the caterers know the confirmed reception numbers, having a full dress rehearsal of the wedding, checking all of the details again, and arranging for your honeymoon suitcases to be taken to the reception venue.
The big day
Make sure you set your alarm clocks - it’s traditional for the bride to be a little late, but sharing a service with the next group in line isn’t exactly the ideal scenario. Make sure the best man has the rings and that the groom has his speech. Don’t forget to take a cheque book along to pay the church fees, and remember to take along the presents for attendants and parents.
7
TRIM THE COST OF YOUR FLOWERS
I
t’s not until you start planning a wedding yourself that you realise how quickly things can start to add up and before long you’ve blown through your budget. You don’t want to cut corners on the important stuff so take a read of our top 10 tips for trimming the cost of your flower bill.
1.
Potted plants make lovely table centres and can be as simple or as extravagant as you like – orchids, campanula or hyacinths will all look great. They can also be handed out to special helpers at the end of the day as a thank you.
2.
Ask your florist if they offer a hire service of glasswear and candelabras – it will be much cheaper than buying it yourself to only use once.
3.
Eyes will always be drawn to large arrangements, therefore if you have one flower focal point it will save you decorating every corner of your venue.
8
FLOWERS
4.
Use a large arrangement as both a table plan and wishing tree at the reception – two birds, one stone!
5.
Before you book your wedding take into consideration the time of year. Avoid Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter as flower prices can soar or even double during these times of year.
6.
If you have your ceremony and reception in the same venue make sure all the decorations can be reused. It will be easy to move decorations without your guests even noticing.
7
.Be inspired by a country walk. There are so many wild flowers and stunning foliage that can be picked for free and look absolutely beautiful in a glass vase.
8.
Having lots of bridesmaids sometimes means you have to think creatively especially if you don’t have a huge budget. Think of ways to reuse all of your bridesmaid’s bouquets. If you have eight or more bridesmaids placing their flowers within a simple vase tied with pretty ribbon could look great as a top table decoration.
9.
Table centres do not all need to be high. If you feel as though your reception needs height but can’t afford to do every table mix in low, less expensive alternatives as an option such as hydrangeas.
10.
While saving costs can be made in most aspects of your flower scheme, do not cut back on a beautifully made bouquet – after all, this flower is likely to be the most photographed, is an accessory to your stunning dress and the one flower you will want to remember. Many brides have their flowers pressed after the big day as a keepsake.

LET THEM EAT CAKE
G
uests will gather and stare and photographs will be taken…yes your cake is almost as important as the dress. Whether you opt for a classic tiered cake, cupcake, cookies or cheese, make the choice a little easier by following these simple steps…
Research
Once you’ve set the date it’s important to start thinking about the overall concept of your big day. Once you’ve decided a theme it’s likely you’ll also have an idea of your cake design, however research is key. Cakes can be pricey so make sure you have a budget in mind and then spend some time researching bakers, further ideas and details. The more creative and elaborate the cake the more expensive the cost due to the time 12
it takes to make. If your cake is coming in over budget look at ways of reducing your costs by looking at smaller or simpler options.
Have a clear plan
Once you’ve made a decision on the type of cake you would like, start to think about the extra details; tiers, shape, decoration and flavour. These ideas should be clearly written down so the baker has an understanding of what you want. Photos are often a great way of explaining your point and thanks to Pinterest it has never been easier to share visual ideas. For inspiration take a look at www.pinterest.com/eastlifemag/ List how many tiers you want and the details for each. Include a detailed description of
WEDDING CAKES
decorations and specify where each piece of décor should be placed. Remember to tell your baker how many guests you have and the location of your wedding.
Choosing your baker
If you have a set budget make sure you do your research and get quotations from a number of different bakers before proceeding.
Location is key
If you’re getting married far away from home select a baker nearby to your venue. Though you may love your local baker or mums friend who makes those amazing cupcakes, you need to remember that
cakes are difficult to transport long distance, especially if you’re planning a summer wedding. Your venue should be able to recommend local suppliers and many wedding cake companies will offer tasting sessions.
Early bird
The cake should be ordered at least four months prior to the wedding, if not more. This gives the baker enough time to devote to making your wedding cake, as there are chances of your wedding cake going wrong if it’s rushed. Specify the exact cost of the entire wedding cake, including any charges for pillars, cake tops, delivery, set-up etc. If any deposit has been given, list down the proper amount of the deposit as well as the remaining balance. 13

WEDDING DRESSES
You’ve found the one, now it’s time to find the dress How much of your budget should you allocate to your wedding dress? I’d set a budget in mind of what you can afford but have a little extra tucked away as your dream dress may come in over budget so always good to have an “emergency” fund. Then research designers within this budget.
Finding Your Dream Dress
I
t’s the most important dress you will ever wear and one that you’ll remember forever but just how will you decide? With so much choice available shopping for your wedding dress can sometimes be a little trickier than you might expect. To help relieve the stress, we caught up with UK bridal designer Charlotte Balbier to find out the dos and don’ts of finding your special dress. A third generation bridal designer, Charlotte has been designing gowns for over 11 years. Available in over 40 stockiest in the UK, Charlotte offers fresh and fashion forward designs, which will make brides-to-be go weak at the knees. What are the most important factors to consider? Keep an open mind, take guidance from the stylists in the boutiques and try on gowns they suggest. Remember to have fun too.
When should you purchase your dress? A year is a good amount of time so there is not a last minute rush to finish off the dress. It means you can fit in two to three fittings before the big day to make sure everything is perfect. Many brides leave finding the perfect shoes and accessories to the last minute but I advise doing this early on too. The dress length needs to be cut according to the shoe heel height so no alterations can be done without your shoes. Are there any additional costs you should take into consideration after you’ve purchased your dress? Each of our bridal stockists operates differently so you need to check with them what their policy is on various things including alterations. You do need to budget for alterations. There’s such a huge choice available to brides, how do you whittle it down? Keep an open mind, it’s good to use magazines and look online for inspiration but when you go for bridal appointments at the 15

WEDDING DRESSES boutiques listen to what the sales advisors suggest as they are experts, nine times out of ten they will suggest a dress that turns out to be ‘the one’. How many dresses should you try before making a decision? It completely depends on the bride. Figuring out your body shape and the best styles that will suit it is a great way to eliminate dresses to try on. If you try on a dress and absolutely fall in love with it at first site then it’s the one. What do you predict for next year’s trends? Brides are loving both the fitted gowns and the full ball gowns, both very different but equally as gorgeous. Gold is very popular and is set to be even more popular in 2015. Bring gold shades into both the brides style and also the wedding day style. Sequin linens for the tables and gold shaded glass wear all styled to create a stunning backdrop for any wedding day. What are your tips for accessorizing a wedding dress? I am a big accessories fan so I love everything from jewellery, handbags and shoes. I love shoes and there are so many great choices out there from Aruna Seth, Freya Rose and Jimmy Choo. You can really have fun with adding accessories to your theme of the wedding. You can be daring and go for a bright coloured handbag and shoes, perhaps a blue shade to satisfy the ‘something blue’ part of a wedding. What are your top tips for an Eastlife bride? The vows really should be the most important part of a wedding day but my three golden rules are - a good photographer, amazing dress and fantastic food and drink. What can we expect from your latest collection? ‘The Iscoyd Park’ collection is made up of over twenty gorgeous gowns in an array of styles to suit the modern day bride. It’s based on my own wedding. The collection includes two dresses I actually wore on the big day The ‘Iscoyd Park’ collection was designed with love and our wedding in mind. Check stockists at www.charlottebalbier.com 17

BLOOM INTO ACTION
W
hether it’s summer or winter there’s no excuse for your wedding bouquet or flower arrangements to be boring. Using seasonal blooms is the perfect way to create beautifully natural and gorgeously smelling flower displays for your big day and there’s certainly no shortage of possibilities that reflect the seasons throughout the year. Natural accents For a bouquet you just can’t stop smelling or a centre piece that adds natural aroma to the air ask your florist to add an extra dimension to your flowers by mixing touches of sage, rosemary and silvery Dusty Miller leaves. You’ll get a frosty effect, which is great for winter weddings, while breaking up an all-white or block colour palette plus it will smell delicious. Alternatively you can think outside the flowerbed and bring in a few non-floral elements, such as white snowberries or viburnum, hypericum or pepper berries to a bouquet or arrangement, which will add serious seasonal appeal. Some brides are even adding dramatic feathers to their flowers and most are asking for the boutonnieres to echo their multi-textured bouquets. On budget If you want to be eco-friendly on your wedding day and make the most of your wedding budget, then you should choose 20
seasonal flowers for your decorations. For autumn, hydrangeas are a firm favourite. Hydrangeas come in spectrum of colours, not just blues and pinks. Many weddings have incorporated white hydrangeas wrapped in hessian for an extra edge. If you’re going for an antique look then try hydrangeas in a dusky lilac shade, a classic option for that vintage feel. Festive fun A winter wedding is a great time of year to make the most of seasonal elements such as pinecones, holly or ever greens. These flowers are a simple and effective way of adding a festive touch to your celebration. Using white, green or red flowers will instantly add a Christmassy look and feel. Berried ivy is fantastic for a Great Gatsby themed wedding. Team with vintage birdcages and pearls for a truly glamorous look. Consider using Christmas roses for your bouquet. Despite the name, the Christmas rose actually has no relation to the real thing but can be used to add a subtle, yet elegant look to a winter bouquet. Whatever blossom you choose just remember that your bouquet is an important part of your outfit and will be the most photographed flower on the day so research and choosing an arrangement that fits with not only your décor but the style of your dress is key.

A VINTAGE VISION
T
here is something ineffably fascinating about using something old to celebrate something new. Until fairly recently, the tradition of incorporating ‘something old’ into your wedding might have included borrowing a piece of jewellery from a close friend or family member. Nowadays, couples have realised that they can personalise their entire wedding day by styling it according to the fashions and aesthetics of an era that they admire. Fashions and styles of the past are timeless, beautiful pieces of history that should be accessible to all who admire them today – including brides. ‘Vintage wedding’ is simply a descriptive term applied to evoke the style and aesthetic chosen by a modern bride or couple, which reflects a major element of their wedding day. Regardless, whether you opt for a full on authentic vintage affair or a more vintage-inspired wedding with just a few light references to a bygone era, what really matters is that your day reflects your personal tastes and preferences.
24
Craft your wedding by cherry-picking the details you love the most. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to vintage wedding style. Explore and discover different eras – mix and match various looks if you so wish. It’s entirely up to you. Why wear vintage? Grab yourself a telephone directory or check any online search engine and you’ll soon be able to locate the details of a seamstress, designer or tailor who should be able to produce a replica vintage wedding dress at your request. This bespoke option is a popular choice amongst brides who are inspired by vintage wedding fashions but may be cautious about investing in an original vintage design. Original vintage is not something to be afraid of. Whilst it is a known fact that most vintage wedding gowns tend to be small in fit (particularly around the waist), can carry imperfections and be damaged, this shouldn’t put you off exploring the past to find something beautiful and unique to wear on your wedding day.
THEMES & DECOR
Why choose vintage? One of a kind Every vintage wedding dress available today is a one-off – a completely unique piece of history that you can guarantee will not be seen on any other bride, no matter how many wedding magazines or wedding blogs you browse through. Current fashions and trends aren’t important Researching what vintage looks you love the most will help you to discover more about your own personal style and what works best with your body shape. Fine craftsmanship Most vintage wedding dresses were produced prior to mass commercial manufacture and so boast beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Value for money Almost all original vintage wedding dresses are less expensive than modern-day replicas or designer wedding dresses (although some designer vintage bridal gowns, whose provenance can be traced, will be much more expensive and available only via auction or specialists with a niche in designer vintage). A style to suit every body shape Certain era looks tend to favour particular body types and each chapter ahead will touch on this in more detail, e.g. the more loose, droppedwaist looks of the 1920s tend to better suit a more slender frame and smaller bust; the fluid bias-cut styles of the 1930s suit tall slender figures, but also look amazing on curves; and the fuller-skirted, layered petticoat look that became popular in the 1950s will flatter the fuller figure. Ethical On the whole choosing to wear vintage presents a better choice ethically; with the exception of bespoke dressmaking, most (though by no means all) contemporary wedding dress manufacture takes place overseas, utilising low-cost commercial production services. This raises an ethical question mark when a wedding dress is then sold on for many times more the amount that it cost to manufacture because it holds a designer name tag or, more often than not, simply because it is a wedding dress.

FINDING THE ONE
Aoften begin to run wild with wedding fter the initial yes, a brides mind can
planning but before you start picking your dress and colour scheme, finding the perfect venue is a must.
With so much choice it can sometimes be a daunting task but stick to careful planning and sensible decision making and you’ll soon be saying your ‘I dos’ in the location of your dreams.
Location, location, location
When deciding which venues to view it’s important to think about the overall theme of your wedding. Do you want an elegant and formal affair or a relaxed, garden party? Some venues can help reflect your style 30
perfectly without the need of over the top décor. Location is vital. Make a decision on the area you would like to get married and then search for venues within that region.
Viewing your venue
Go as a couple to your first viewing. Not only will it build excitement but it’s a good opportunity for you to both choose a venue that suits your relationship and personalities. Ask lots of questions. No matter how small or silly of a matter it might seem, if it’s important to you then ask – the wedding co-ordinator will be happy to help, we promise!
Guests
Make a rough estimate of the number of guests attending your wedding, both day and night. Ensure the venue will be able to

budget beforehand and stick to it. It’s easy to get swept away in the moment but you don’t want to blow your entire budget on the venue and not have enough for the dress of your dreams. If you find a venue you love but can’t quite afford it, speak with the wedding co-ordinator to see if you can arrange a special package. Buffet and BBQ options are sometimes cheaper than a full sit down meal. Pick the Perfect Ring
ood things come in small packages. Despite this well-known fact, weddings themselves are all too often big in every sense of the word. But don’t lose sight of what’s important during the often hugely overwhelming planning process. To dismiss a wedding or engagement ring as ‘just a piece of jewellery’ is to do the entire tradition a disservice. These material items serve as a symbol for the life you plan on building together and the love you’re pledging to one another forever. Ephemeral they are not. You will be wearing this ring for as long as you are married – hopefully for the rest of your life. We all know that the big bling comes at the beginning of the wedding process – with the engagement ring. There’s no need for any aspiring grooms to feel constrained by tradition, gemstone or even budget when it comes to proposing. The traditional brilliant cut diamond solitaire in a typical gold setting
36
is the obvious, conservative choice – deservedly popular because of its universal appeal. Princess, Emerald and Oval cuts are all small variations on this conventional theme. Not all brides, however, are conventional. The popularity of coloured stones is gaining momentum and shows no sign of abating. Not only do gems such as Emeralds, Sapphires (in various shades, such as peach or pink - or even white) and Garnets make beautiful pieces of jewellery but they are rare choices too. They stand out and can be personalised to each bride. Why not opt for a stone in her favourite colour or her birthstone? Consider different metal settings as well – rose gold is feminine and has a ‘contemporary vintage’ feel, whilst yellow gold pairs beautifully with yellow diamonds. Mixing metals is another way to bring quirkiness to a ring setting. The engagement ring will to some extent define the style of the wedding ring – no one
JEWELLERY
THE FINAL CUT Brilliant – this round cut is the most popular of all gemstone cuts. Princess – this square shaped cut is second only to the round brilliant in its popularity. Emerald – this versatile cut lends itself to both vintage and contemporary aesthetics. With long lines, it tends to be less fiery than a ‘round brilliant’ cut, but boasts broader, more dramatic flashes of light. Cushion – despite not being as brilliant as newer cuts, its romantic and classic look sets it apart from other styles. Pear – with vintage appeal, it tends to lend size to smaller carat weights, as well providing an elegant look and plenty of sparkle. Oval - the beautiful oval cut accentuates long, slender fingers and reflects light dazzlingly. Marquise – the cut tends to maximise carat weight as well as flatter fingers, making them appear more slender. Asscher – a fantastic vintage appeal. Trillion – the cut’s brilliance and fire is also ideally suited to an entirely unique solitaire. Radiant – this hybrid cut is hugely popular as it combines the depth and brilliance of the round, emerald and princess cuts.
wants there to be a mismatch. Simple, slender bands in a matching precious metal are elegant and discrete, and do not steal focus from the engagement ring if it is the main event. But if the engagement ring itself is subtle, or even non-existent, then the wedding ring is another chance to experiment and choose a really lovely piece of jewellery. There are plenty of different styles of wedding band to choose from for women, with jewellery designers experimenting with a variety of styles and embellishments. Carved embellishments have a subtle elegance and a vintage feel and stunning pave diamonds provide gorgeous sparkle. Really elaborate designs have actual cut out patterns set with gems. But sparkle and embellishment isn’t just for the girls. Men may not be accustomed to wearing jewellery but that could soon change once they catch a glimpse of the different styles on offer to them. The first step is to choose the perfect precious metal – it doesn’t have to be gold. Choose something that looks good against your skin tone or a favourite metal. It doesn’t have to be white, yellow or rose gold. Try black titanium for a super masculine look and a cheaper alternative to platinum. Depending on the groom’s personal sparkle threshold, there are plenty of bejewelled mens rings available varying from a subtle strip of off-centre diamonds to a bold row flanked by other gems such as sapphire. For interest and design flair without diamonds, mixing textures is the way to go – matte metal finishes next to their shiny counterparts are striking. Subtle patterned embellishments in the form of blocks, squares or ridges are elaborate but nevertheless masculine. Enjoy the wedding ring buying process for what it is – a shining oasis of indulgence in the midst of wedding planning mayhem. Choose something that works for you and stay open minded – your perfect ring may be the last thing you’d expect. 37

A wedding planner; something else you might consider saying “I do” too?
I
nviting a wedding planner to become involved in one of the most precious and private times of your life can be hard to imagine. But as any husband or wife will tell you, the complexities of organising your big day can, and often do, overwhelm the most organised of people. From knowing which supplier to choose to selecting specific blooms of flower, planning an entire wedding is no mean feat and while a planner is there to guide your journey and loan their expertise, they would never expect you to surrender complete control of your wedding. East of England’s finest independent wedding planner, Caroline Gould, discusses the benefits of hiring a professional to manage all or some of the organisation of your wedding. With practice comes perfection It might be that you can visualise exactly how your wedding should be, but just need assistance in executing your perfect day. 40
A wedding planner can be as involved as you need them to be, whether it’s advice you’re looking for, or just reassurance to know you are on the right track. Whether you require their involvement from the moment you say ‘yes’, a few months before your wedding to bring all of your planning together, or simply to coordinate on the day. Whatever your purpose, wedding planners can tailor a bespoke level of service entirely to your requirements and budget. Protect your sanity The average bride spends the equivalent of six full time working weeks, equating to around 250 hours, planning her wedding. Although many brides (and grooms) enjoy every element of the planning process, some simply do not have the time, patience, experience (or sanity!) to contemplate each and every detail. Hiring a wedding planner not only makes life easier by alleviating this time, but it means you have one dedicated contact and consultant, for every element of your wedding. This will fundamentally save you from hunting through different suppliers.
WEDDING PLANNING
Money saver A wedding planner can help you and your partner set a realistic, affordable budget. In fact a good wedding planner will actually save you money - often enough money to cover their fee! Your planner will have spent years crafting relationships and negotiating rates with venues and suppliers so will know how much things should (and shouldn’t!) cost. They will help you to manage your budget and advise what percentage of your budget should be allocated where, to ensure your budget goes as far as possible.
The ‘Big Day’ The last thing you want to hear on your wedding day is a supplier who’s running late, or can’t make it (this actually happened recently!). Leave these crises to your wedding planner who is a professional at calmly solving last minute problems – she’ll most certainly have a back-up plan at-the-ready. Your wedding planner will either be with you on the morning of your wedding, preparing you for the most exciting and important day of your life, or will already be at the venue making sure all of your plans become a reality.
Wedding etiquette Wedding etiquette can be extremely important on your wedding day. Your wedding planner is constantly gaining creative inspiration and will know all the latest trends set by the USA and other wedding industry professionals, so can take your ideas to the next level.
A wedding day timeline will have been created to ensure that your guests are seated on the perfectly positioned chairs, the cake has arrived in one piece, the florist has worked their magic with the table decorations and the caterers and venue are fully prepared, leaving you both to relax and enjoy your wedding day.
Your wedding planner will have the experience to advise you and your family on wedding traditions, what to expect on the day, and can discuss the aspects that will be most important to you both on the day. This will help to visualise what will best represent you and your partner’s dreams, refining the style and atmosphere you wish to create.
