1.

Mix the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

2.

Place the mascarpone in a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until soft and smooth. Gradually beat in half the lemon sugar mixture, beating well after each addition.

3.

In a separate bowl, whip the cream until softly peaking. Gently fold the cream into the lemon mascarpone mixture. If it is a little too firm, fold in 2-3 tbsp of milk or single cream.

4.

Dip four of the sponge fingers in some of the remaining lemon and sugar mixture then arrange in the base of four glass serving dishes, breaking to fit if necessary. Spoon half the mascarpone cream mixture on top.

5.

Repeat the layers once more using the rest of the sponge fingers, lemon sugar mixture and lemon mascarpone cream. Scatter the white chocolate curls over the top. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.

Beauty And The Beach by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

From a £3.25 multi-tasker to a £70 serum, we have plenty of beauty goodies to tempt you with this month. Still hiding your legs away under loose trousers and maxi dresses? Try Neals Yard Remedies’ Seaweed Salt Scrub. It’s superb at getting rid of dry skin and leaves legs feeling much softer and smoother. The salt and kaolin also help to draw out toxins. And, as an added bonus, the essential oils, including ginger, grapefruit and frankincense, smell amazing, so the scrub is a real pleasure to use. It’s £18 from www.nealsyardremedies.com.

Spend time considering whether a few quick, inexpensive changes or an entire redesign will make your garden practical and beautiful.

Think about lighting early – an outdoor lighting circuit (installed by a qualified electrician) allows for flexible, effective garden lighting. Consider what features would benefit from illumination and add general lighting for the evening. Wall lights are ideal for paths and passageways, while strings of lights can be wound around trees, posts and trellises.

First, sketch a scale plan of the space on graph paper and decide what will go where. If revamping the landscaping ensure that the materials you use – for paving, fencing, pots, furnishings and so on – all co-ordinate. Set the dining area nearest If not starting from scratch, there are

Fit a simple metal archway over a path as a focal point, or install a small wooden pergola. Refresh walls or fencing with a coat of paint – matt black and very dark blue are very on-trend.

For the competitive the Crabbing, Putting and Sandcastle Competitions Animal Magic Bake-off , Archery and the Junior Golf Skills should be fun and challenging. from the 60s to contemporary. Flares are not compulsory but very much encouraged! It is not often that a true Scottish national treasure comes to Crail but this year the incomparable Liz Lochhead will be making two appearances on 20 July. In the afternoon she will be participating in an episode of May Island Discs; and in the evening her audience will be enthralled listening to Liz's monologues, poems, other writings and musings. The Five Star Comedy Evening on 23 July will feature Paul Sneddon aka Vladimir McTavish, a hugely versatile, irrepressible, irreverent, observant comedian who will be making a very welcome return to Crail with four very talented 'friends'- Robin Grainger, JoJo Sutherland, Susan Morrison and Mark Nelson- to present the very best of contemporary Scottish comedy. A night for sheer escapism! The hardy 'annuals', Art Exhibition, Putting Green, Street Market (biggest ever) and the Festival Quiz, will also feature. Last year, in inclement weather, 3933 putting rounds were completed. Given the dry, sunny weather, we have enjoyed in May and June the record of 4200 rounds in 2015 could well be under threat. Gardening

Essential Scent By Pippa Greenwood

No matter how good your garden may look, without scent it is missing a vital ingredient – and you don’t have to sacrifice colour and texture when using perfumed plants, as many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking.

Weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches us, and in a windswept spot the perfume can literally be blown away. Unusually low temperatures can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants.

Smaller or more subtly-scented plants, such as some of the polyanthus or the miniature Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and is iris, should be planted in raised areas or in often used to attract attention to the flower pots – otherwise their perfume can easily and thus entice a suitable pollinator. Place smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume in your house as it wafts in through windows left ajar. For sitting out after sundown, plant flowers that are at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamywhite flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or try the night-perfumed nicotianas or tobacco plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris. Combine the vibrant colours of bedding plants with some scented stunners in patio pots and other containers. How about some hyacinths or the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple which will produce perfume throughout the summer? It’s amazing how much can be crammed into a small space: for example the Clippa Lady Mini Multi-Tool Hair Clip (£8) combines a bottle opener, scraper, ruler, small screwdriver and a nail file in a simple pink hair clip. If you fancy something that’s more practical than pretty, the evergreen Leatherman multitool and its many imitators crams an astonishing number of tools into something barely larger than a pair of pliers, and while you can’t generally fly with them in your carry-on luggage – many multi-tools have various cutting bits that make them potential weapons – they’re very useful things to pack, or to have on a hike or in a caravan. It pays to shop around, though: the top Leatherman models can be ruinously expensive but they’re often heavily discounted, so for example the £149.95 Wave is currently available from several retailers for nearer £100. Much cheaper options are available too. Wearable technology is becoming a big deal in the great outdoors too. Apple’s Series 3 Apple Watch has built-in GPS and is available with its own 4G data connection, albeit only on EE, which enables you to track your route and get directions without having to take your phone out or even bring it with you. And there are now tons of focused GPS watches for sports and for hiking, such as TomTom’s Adventurer GPS watch (£199) or if you’re feeling really flush, Garmin’s Fenix 5 Multisports (£439). Where Apple’s device is a smartwatch

22

that can do GPS, rival devices were designed with GPS as their main priority and are often better bets for serious sports people. TomTom and Garmin are the big names in this market but there are plenty of cheaper options from less established firms too. If you’ll be travelling for a while and think your phone battery won’t last, there are several options for topping up its charge. Some phones enable you to swap the batteries (although the most expensive phones, such as iPhones and the latest Android flagships, don’t), but most big name devices can accept power pack cases that combine a protective case and extra battery in one item. That means much more life between charges, but it does add quite a lot of bulk and weight. Expect to pay around £60 for an established brand such as Mophie’s Juice Pack for the iPhone, and steer clear of no-name products on eBay – dodgy batteries can go on fire with horrific consequences, so it’s wise to stick to recognised brands from reputable sellers. Another option is a portable charger. Solar ones aren’t much cop in the UK except on the sunniest days, but pre-charged devices such as Aukey’s excellent Power Bank can be used to charge tablets, phones, handheld games consoles and other small items such as Kindles. Again, they’re often discounted and £20 is the sweet spot for a decent one. You can expect to get more than four full charges for a smartphone or one and a half for a big tablet.

Cusco - The Inca Capital In Peru By Solange Hondo

The Incas got it right. Up in the Andes, this was a great location for their capital, a remote plateau ringed by mountains and blessed by fertile valleys. Even today Cusco appears almost unreal, a hidden city basking in subtropical highlands at 3,400 metres. Eucalyptus rise in the thin mountain air, redroofed houses clamber up the lower slopes and the sound of Andean flutes echoes along the streets. Little is known about the early Killke settlers but the first Incas arrived in the 1200s, led by Manco Capac whose origins remain shrouded in legend. The city reached its apogee from 1438 onwards when, after defeating the Chacas, Pachacuti came to power. Ninth ruler and ‘world shaker’, he transformed the Inca kingdom into one of the world’s greatest empires and rebuilt the capital with highways, irrigation channels, terraced gardens, ceremonial plaza with a

26

gold-covered altar, magnificent Temple of the Sun and other major buildings near the Saphi stream, the mythical origins of Cusco. That’s where the Spanish conquistadors entered the heart of the city in 1533, described by their leader Francisco Pizarro as ‘very noble and great’ with palaces, regular streets and a temple studded with gold, ‘fabulous beyond belief’. The Incas attempted to regain control in 1536 but failed after a ten months siege. Now the time had come to build churches, convent, cathedral and more, using the old Inca walls as foundations. Earthquakes have often damaged the Spanish buildings but Inca walls survived and in 1983 Cusco became a Unesco site for its combined Inca and colonial heritage. The Santo Domingo Convent and Church is a striking example, built originally on the

sacred site of Coricancha and the most important Temple of the Sun. Today one can still sense the haunting presence of the Incas drifting along the pre-Hispanic walls. Other popular churches include La Merced and the Jesuits’, both famous for their Cusco Baroque style, while in the cathedral the Quechua builders, descendants of the Incas, made sure they left their mark. Guides will point out the suggestive phallic symbols, dear to the Incas, carved on the choir stalls but most surprising of all is the 18th century painting of the Last Supper. Forget bread and wine, here Jesus and the apostles are sharing Andean cheese, local fruit and a guinea pig, the traditional Peruvian dish. The cathedral opens on the Plaza de Armas, the colourful central square, which hosts two stunning festivals in June, the religious Feast of Corpus Christi and on the 24th - the winter solstice in the southern

hemisphere - the Inca Festival of the Sun. A gentle stroll from the plaza, the artisans’ district of San Blas is a different world, winding through a maze of steps and alleyways where a mysterious twelve-angled stone holds pride of place in one of the bestpreserved Inca walls. But on the hilltop above town, the largest stones of any Inca archaeological site are found in the Saksayhuman fortress, built by the Killke then massively extended by Pachacuti. Meanwhile, just along the path, a giant statue of Christ looks down on the old capital still shaped like a puma, the sacred animal of the Incas. With its rich heritage and vibrant colours, Cusco is indeed a lovely place to explore before heading to Machu Picchu on the scenic rail journey or one of the high altitude treks for the truly adventurous.

Book Review

Holiday Reads

Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. Salvage the Bones – Jesmyn Ward With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-yearold Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you. I Still Dream – James Smythe It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an AI with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read. Wishes Under the Willow Tree – Phaedra Patrick Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him.

28

Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart – Holly Ringland Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away. The Family Next Door – Sally Hepworth Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down. How I Lose You – Kate McNaughton How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.

Call For Public Support for A Wilder Scotland Golden eagles, beavers, ospreys and pine martens will take centre stage in a landmark new conservation book aiming to inspire a sea change in attitudes towards a wilder Scotland. Scotland: A Rewilding Journey will lay out a vision of how rewilding could transform Scotland and benefit its people and wildlife. It is being supported by a crowdfunding appeal launched today by conservation charity Trees for Life. The book, to be published this autumn, is written and edited by some of Scotland’s most prominent conservationists – including John Lister-Kaye and Duncan Halley – with stunning images from many of the country’s top nature photographers, who have spent three years capturing the beauty and drama of Scotland’s wild landscapes and wildlife. Steve Micklewright, Trees for Life’s Chief Executive, said: “Despite its raw beauty, the Scottish landscape is today an ecological shadow of its former self. It wasn’t so long ago that vibrant, wild forest stretched across much of Scotland, with beavers and cranes at home in extensive wetlands, salmon and trout filling rivers, and

30

lynx and wild boar roaming in woodlands. “Yet now our large carnivores are extinct, our woodlands reduced to small fragments, and a degraded landscape supporting little life stretches across millions of acres. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This book will be a major rallying call for rewilding – helping to make Scotland a place where nature works, wildlife flourishes and people prosper.” Trees for Life is the main sponsor of the book, which is also being supported by Reforesting Scotland, Rewilding Britain, The Borders Forest Trust, and Woodland Trust Scotland. The book will be published by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture (www.scotlandbigpicture.com), a non-profit social enterprise that includes many leading nature photographers and film-makers, and which promotes the benefits of a wilder Scotland for people and wildlife through stunning visual media. Trees for Life’s crowdfunding campaign runs from 25 June-23 July 2018, and offers people the opportunity to support publication of the book and its urgent conservation message by

helping to raise £20,000. A range of rewards for supporters include a stay in a wilderness cabin, wildlife photography workshops, fine art posters and signed editions of the publication. Photographer and Director of SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, Peter Cairns – who is editing the book with Susan Wright – said: “Scotland: A Rewilding Journey will lay out a powerful vision for a future Scotland, where eagles soar, red squirrels forage and beavers engineer new wetlands. “It is being published at a tipping point in the history of Scotland’s landscapes, with a growing understanding of the benefits of a wilder environment for people and nature. We want the book to ignite fresh conversations and forge new relationships with the people who shape Scotland’s landscapes – including key landowners, policy makers and rural interest groups.”

He added: “Worldwide, short-term economics are wrecking nature – sometimes irreversibly. Our climate is changing, species are being lost forever, and vital natural resources such as clean air and water are under threat. Everyone who supports Scotland: A Rewilding Journey will be helping to make the case for a new approach, in which Scotland is a world leader in environmental repair and restoration.” Trees for Life works to restore Scotland’s ancient Caledonian Forest and its unique wildlife. For over 25 years, the award-winning charity has been pioneering ecological restoration or rewilding. Its long-term vision is to restore natural forests to a vast area of the Scottish Highlands, including its 10,000-acre Dundreggan Estate in Glenmoriston. See www.treesforlife.org.uk. Carry on Camping By Kate Duggan

Campfires, bike rides, toasted marshmallows, bug hunts, star gazing … there’s a lot of fun to be had on a family camping trip. Camping on a budget While camping is one of the most walletfriendly ways to holiday, the equipment doesn’t always come cheap. Try searching Ebay, Gumtree and Facebook for secondhand tents. You’ll often find people selling a full camping package, including tent, airbeds, gas stove and chairs. Do you have Tesco points to spend? You can pick up a 4-man tent from Tesco Direct for around £50. Rent a tent Love the idea of camping, but don’t have space for all the equipment, or just don’t fancy pitching a tent in the rain? Why not rent a tent? Your tent will be put up for you

34

and you can even hire all the equipment to go with it. All you need to do is turn up, unpack and head to the beach. Search online for companies or ask your chosen campsite for recommendations. If you want a few more mod-cons, you could look into hiring a campervan or caravan. Try www.camperbug.co.uk for retro VW campervans. Where to go We really are spoilt for campsites in the UK. There are literally hundreds to choose between, from tiny farm fields to entertainment-filled holiday parks. The National Trust has lots of smaller, peaceful sites on offer, including in the Lake District, Cornwall and Snowdonia; see www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Community

Pittenweem Community Library & Information Centre Happiness is a well-read dog... Saturday morning ‘Reading to Angus’ sessions are a popular addition to the facilities now on offer from Pittenweem Community Library. Children who may be hesitant with their reading abilities are encouraged to meet and read to the appreciative wee dog, Angus Khan, without fear of criticism for stumbling with their delivery. Angus is an adorable poodle/cavalier spaniel cross with an evident love of children and - who knows ? - a love, too, of early-years literature. Safe and confidential one-to-one 20 minute sessions are held every other Saturday and are completely free of charge. Angus and owner Suzanne are available by appointment, contact details below or call in. Pittenweem Community Library & Information Centre reopened as a volunteer-run resource on 12 July last year. More than 200 readers of all ages have joined the library; membership is free and there is no charge for borrowing books - and no fines if they become overdue! As well as Reading to Angus, activities in the past year have been widened to include many new initiatives - the latest being a ‘Books on Wheels’ service for readers who

may have mobility or access problems, temporarily or long-term, which make it difficult to get to the library in person. Specific books can be ordered from the library’s online catalogue and delivered to your home. New books for all ages are available: there is a good stock of large print books and the range of audio books has been widened to meet a growing demand. Visitors will also find free WiFi and computer access, a wide range of DVDs to borrow and greeting cards and maps to buy. A colour printer, copier, scanner and a shredder are available. The Local History section is full of fascinating titles, including a CD of the Pittenweem Register, and is growing all the time. The library is publishing a third edition of Paula Martin’s What to See in Pittenweem: a guided walk, revised and with a new map. Hot off the press, it is now on sale in the library and the Pittenweem Hub. The library is also producing a Welcome to Pittenweem brochure for visitors with a map of the town and lots of useful information about what to see and where to eat and shop in Pittenweem.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic, there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s addictive! Solution to Suduko and Crossword on page 45.

The Fly Lady

Ready Room By Marla Cilley

Are you ready? Ready to start your day? Ready to start your week? Ready for what’s next in your life? Most of us think we are, but when an opportunity presents itself we slam the door in its face. All because we are not ready! We are not dressed, our houses are in a mess and we don’t have time right now! Our mothers used to yell at us to get ready! Our sweet darlings do this today and we silently ignore those words because we are in rebellion. Why are we rebelling against the one thing that is going to help us take the next step to finding out who we are and what we want to do with our lives? I have been thinking about the term ‘Ready Room’. I looked it up in the dictionary and it says it is a room where pilots are briefed and await orders. Before they enter this room they are dressed and prepared to go! Every day is a new day filled with exciting opportunities, if we neglect ourselves along with our routines we will not be ready to jump in and enjoy a chance at having fun. Not being ready keeps us grounded and not in a good way! When we ignore the basics we will not be ready to be spontaneous. Isn’t this all that any of us want to do! Be carefree and spontaneous. Haven’t we been accused of this our whole lives. Deep down inside we knew that it was just fine to have fun. We never listened to those who said, “Get Ready” first! We thought they were just boring! The truth is that they know something that we did not want to recognize. When you get your homework done; you can go out and play!

42

Our routines are not strait-jackets they are the framework that frees us to have fun and play! They are also the foundation to helping us be creative without the guilt that has stifled our creativity all these years. When we stifle our creativity we kill part of our souls.

Guilt has a way of beating us down and keeping us from accomplishing our dreams. Releasing this guilt by getting ready for your day is a first step to the rest of your life and finding yourself. The guilt has kept you locked away. The guilt has also been instrumental in your daily abuse of your body and mind. We all know our drugs of choice. When our creativity is bottled up inside we feel bad and this is when we turn to that form of self-medication to protect ourselves from the feelings of guilt and worthlessness. This can be anything from food to alcohol or even computers and books. We can lose ourselves any number of ways. We are worthy of love, creativity and being ourselves. We just don’t know where to start to get ready! It is not that hard to put one foot in front of the other and take babysteps. After all what you have been doing has not been effective in harnessing your creativity for good in the world. You have shut it down because of those voices in your head telling you to do something. Quiet those voices by following a little different path: Get up and get ready for your day! Take babysteps to find your voice by doing simple three step routines in the morning and in the evening. These routines will be your ready room to what is next in your life! For help getting rid of your CHAOS, check out her website and join her free mentoring group at www.FlyLady.net or her book, Sink Reflections published by Random House and her New York Times Best Selling book, Body Clutter published by Simon and Schuster.
