This year we celebrate birds and birdsong: In music through masterpieces by Beethoven and Ravel and the fabulous and beguiling sound-world of John Luther Adams; in the writing and ideas of a host of fine authors including Keith Brockie, Sir John ListerKaye, Esther Woolfson & Conor Mark Jameson; and in art through the delightful prints of Lisa Hooper.

Tokyo String Quartet 8pm | Crail Church | £25 / £17 Mozart: Quartet KV499 “Hoffmeister” Webern: Quartet in E (1905) Schubert: Quintet in C (with David Watkin, cello) A grand concert to open with – one touched with sadness as well as elation. The Tokyo String Quartet gives its last European concert in Crail Church – their penultimate concert before retiring. Don’t miss this final encounter with a legend. “…Their ensemble work has never been better, their musical insight more true or their technique polished to a higher gloss. From the start this had the makings of one of those rare evenings when music can turn into something approaching magic or, if you will, the song of angels.” Huffington Post

Poulenc: Sonata for Clarinet and Bassoon Messiaen: Abîme des Oiseaux Mozart: Sonata for Cello and Bassoon K292 Janáček: Mladi London Conchord Ensemble’s clarinetist is none other than SCO principal, Maximiliano Martín. He plays solo Messiaen and features in youthful Mozart and Poulenc, both full of wit and brilliance. Janáček, ebullient and spry in his 70s, looks back to his own schooldays in one of his most uplifting works, Mladi.
Gavin Francis 6pm | Largo Kirk | £10 Adventurers including Alexander Selkirk, immortalised as Robinson Crusoe, are associated with this historic kirk, so it’s a fitting place to hear Fife-bred explorer Gavin Francis. After a year as doctor to the British Antarctic Survey, he speaks eloquently of a world of ice, silence and emperor penguins.

Beethoven: Quartet Op 18 No 2 Beethoven: Piano Sonata Op 26 Mozart: Piano Concerto K414 (chamber version) Mozart’s joyous concerto unites East Neuk Festival 2013’s principal artists in a grand finale to a varied evening. Bohemian Winds 11.30am | Cellardyke Church | £15 / £12 SCO WINDS
Reicha: Horn trios Ligeti: Bagatelles Dvořák: Wind Serenade
Keith Brockie 6pm | Anstruther Church | £10
Dvořák is at his most genial in his Wind Serenade. SCO Winds complement it with a modern masterpiece, Ligeti’s quirky Bagatelles, and a fabulous rarity. Reicha (one time favourite of MarieAntoinette) wrote 24 excellent horn trios: this selection gives the SCO’s fantastic horn section a chance to shine.
The Isle of May shimmers offshore, a place of outstanding scenic beauty. Keith Brockie’s One Man’s Island, filled with his paintings of the birdlife and sealife, was one of the best-selling Scottish nature books ever. Thirty years on, he returns to chronicle the natural life of the Isle. A fascinating illustrated talk.
Andrew Greig with special guest Mike Heron 8pm | Anstruther Town Hall | £10 An entrancing, informal evening of poetry and music. Andrew Greig reads poems of the East Neuk, where he grew up, as well as from his magnificent new work Found At Sea. He is joined by the legendary Mike Heron, founder member of the seminal sixties group The Incredible String Band – a captivating combination.

10.30am – 4pm | Crail Church Hall Lisa Hooper
In their 40th Anniversary year, The Tallis Scholars bring masterpieces of the Renaissance to East Neuk. Taverner’s mass has the sweeping glory of Kings College Chapel: he was the greatest English composer of Henry VIII’s time, and his mass settings are magnificent choral spectaculars – vast and dramatic. Tallis’ Lamentations are profound, timeless – a great contrast.

The “music of the future…” was a phrase Beethoven used repeatedly, accepting that his musical vision would leave his contemporaries far behind. Op 130 awed and confounded them; it is one of the greatest of all masterpieces and is still deeply radical today! Schumann wrote his only three quartets in as many months – Elias perform them superbly.

Saturday at Cambo
EVENTS AT A GLANCE 2pm | Cambo Walled Garden Inuksuit
We were very excited last year to discover the music of John Luther Adams. A major figure in the USA, his fame is growing on this side of the Atlantic, as more and more of the major festivals and venues in Europe begin to commission and programme his work. Once again, East Neuk Festival is just a little ahead of the game…
4.30pm | Cambo Barn Songbirdsongs
Adams could be described as an “environmental” composer in that he is inspired by landscape, nature and birdsong to create utterly gorgeous musical sound-worlds. Even people who believe that they hate new music cannot fail to be engaged, charmed and beguiled. We have two Adams’ works for you to experience on this Saturday, both presented in exceptional settings on the Cambo Estate - Inuksuit (weather permitting) in the ravishing walled garden and Songbirdsongs in Cambo Barn, transformed by lighting into deep, dappled woodland…

RED NOTE ENSEMBLE
A magical sound-world to fill one of Scotland’s most beautiful gardens. We are delighted to present the European première of John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit. The title means “to act in the capacity of the human”. 30 players disperse around the garden leaving the audience free to roam at will, relishing the different perspectives and complex textures that their playing weaves.
Hearing Songbirdsongs is very much like taking a long walk in deep woods, passing through the seasons and times of day as birdsong surrounds you. It is a magical piece with something of the fairytale about it. Presented with atmospheric lighting in the heart of the countryside in Cambo Barn, this will be one to treasure.
Many thanks for the support of the Dunard Fund, without which this project would be impossible.
