A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Even at this close range of reflection, it is easy to say that the 2019-2020 school year is one that will never be forgotten. For EAST, it was a year where we could show the power of collaborative partnership, help pay tribute to a mentor in the best way possible, and continue to innovate. At all levels, EAST led with the heart of service. This drives our efforts to show how authentic learning can transform into concrete action, leading to positive change. This positive feedback loop is one that strengthens our organization, our model, our facilitators, our students, and our communities. It’s also more fun to be a part of! Perhaps the largest accomplishment EAST has seen is the culmination of our dreams of helping connect our students to the next level of their educational journey. Before this year, EAST students have received countless scholarships to colleges and universities across the country. Some were specifically set aside for EAST students, and some are proof of how highly sought-after EAST students are. But all of these were the work of the various scholarship giving organizations choosing to award them. This year, we announced two scholarship programs that we are much more directly connected to, The EAST Student Scholarship and the Dr. Mary Lowe Good Legacy Scholarship. The EAST Student
Scholarship is one that we are proud to announce, and the EAST staff and Board (and other generous donors) raised funds necessary to endow in a single year. The Dr. Mary Lowe Good Legacy Scholarship is one that honors a long-time partnership and a mentor of our work. Thanks to the commitment and generosity of the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas, EAST is now able to offer a scholarship to a female student to further her education in STEAM fields. Of extra-special note, Dr. Good, one of the most accomplished scientists and innovators to ever call Arkansas home, was a mentor to EAST and the Women’s Foundation before either organization was more than just a twinkle in someone’s eye. Honoring her legacy by continuing to support the next generation of thinkers and innovators is a gift that can’t be measured. Beyond this—as you will see, EAST has continued our dedication to providing opportunities to learn and serve no matter the circumstances. We know that by empowering our students to solve the problems they see in their world, we all benefit from their reflected light.

“EAST has given me an abundance of opportunities that I otherwise would have never had, and has provided me with a way to explore my passion for aerospace engineering in a way that improves my community. Through EAST, I have experienced mentors that can help me through a variety of situations, and have made meaningful connections within my community. EAST has empowered me in more ways than I could have imagined, and has given me the tools to go on and shape the future.”

EDUCATION Education is a process. An EAST education is an adventure. A journey filled with individuals who facilitate the process of learning, seemingly failing, challenging, and—most importantly—growing. They understand that each of these steps provides quality education, and in EAST, one that is enhanced by technology and made holistic through service.

“Phase training was the most eye-opening experience when I was a first-year
facilitator, and it was so rewarding to participate as a trainer this Summer. I was able to encourage and witness new facilitators change their mindset and see education in a whole new way. I now get to be part of a huge EAST
support system for these educators. Amazing things happen when you get to show people how to do the thing you love the most!”

ACCELERATED Celebrating the brilliance and innovation of EAST students was not stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic! In the true spirit of EAST, the students, staff, and sponsors came together to #PlayOn; a mentality established by EAST when the 19th annual EAST Conference was canceled in March. EAST Conference 2020 virtual celebration allowed students to receive recognition for participating and winning nearly 30 industrysponsored competitions. Established to bring EAST programs from across the country together to inspire one another and celebrate growth, the annual EAST Conference remained a celebration of innovation, resiliency, personal development, and commitment to partnerships on a local and national level.
EAST Conference is an annual event that brings together over 3,000 people from across the country to celebrate advancement in education through technology and service. 6
The Founder’s Award, named in honor of EAST founder, Tim Stephenson, is the most notable of all EAST conference awards given. This year four schools have been inducted into the Founder’s Circle for extraordinary accomplishments in each of the core principle areas of EAST.

EAST established a national partnership with TeachAids, a company that uses virtual reality to educate youth about signs, symptoms, and long term effects of concussions. In December of 2018, Governor Asa Hutchinson, in partnership with TeachAids, announced that Arkansas will be the first state in the country to implement the concussion education program, CrashCourse, in every high school across the state. EAST was chosen as a partner to help successfully implement the program.

“EAST was definitely my favorite part of high school. I loved being able to take ideas and problems within my community and create solutions to them. EAST gave me so many opportunities to make a positive change, and I use many of those skills when I make art. I have learned to be patient, resilient
