Eastrea Village News For all Eastrea residents.

No 3.

June 2001.

From: Rothay House, Mayfield Rd, Eastrea.

Village Hall Discussions about Eastrea Village Hall are reaching an exciting stage. In London, we have had the advice of our barrister (an expert on charities) and discussions in the House of Commons. At Fenland Hall we have spoken to the council officers concerned with planning and with village development. Among the visitors to Eastrea have been representatives from Whittlesey Town Council and Cambridgeshire ACRE. The owner of the land destined for our Hall, Mr Garner, has been very helpful and has offered us further assistance. We now have a shortlist of architects. We have even heard from Mr Bedford, of Coates Village Hall, who reassures us that even their current level of bookings allows them to balance the books. It is all very encouraging!

Survey During July we will be carrying out our survey. Look out for your questionnaire form, then please fill it in and return it promptly when it comes. There will be a prize draw - first prize, a Sunday lunch for two at the Nag’s Head; second prize, a bottle of Scotch whisky; third prize, a box of chocolates. The survey will provide a detailed picture of Eastrea. More important, for the first time ever, it will allow villagers to have their say about the future planning in our village. There is a new idea, the ‘Village Design Statement’, which allows a community to

publish an account of their own views on the future. Eastrea will probably be the first place in Fenland to undertake one of these surveys. Watch out for the form.

Traffic Control People have been campaigning for years about traffic hazards in Eastrea. The Councils said nothing could be done. After the tragic death of little Megan French, further meetings have been organised (mostly by Megan’s brave mother, Adele). This time, we are all determined that the village gets results.

Calling all Students All university students from Eastrea are eligible to apply for a 2001 Storers’ Grant. Applications need to be in by 10 July. Please send (a) a letter of application, setting out social, academic and spare-time activities and a financial summary, (b) details of the student contribution due to be paid, (c) copies of GCSE and A-level or AS-level results, or expected results, (d) letter of acceptance from University, and (e) a letter of support from head teacher, class teacher or year tutor. The applications are given confidential academic assessment at Cambridge University. Last year’s presentation was covered in the press. The award students received a cheque, and a framed certificate - and all are flourishing at university.
