Solar Power will fuel the Hall

Storers’ lunch

We all heard about the recent Government pronouncement that calls for buildings to be powered by natural means. One of the most consistent views of villagers was that the Hall should economise on running costs as much as possible, with fuel bills top of the list. The final design (a copy of the plans are up at the Nag’s Head) allows us to raise electricity for heating from a solar-powered roof, with a small wind turbine to top up when necessary. This will make the Hall environmentally friendly and very cheap to

The invitation given to some of the retired villagers who came to the Storers Easter lunch said: ‘Pam Potts correctly pointed out that The Storers is meant to supply funds,

run. It will be a building of the future.

Choosing the look of the Hall

but the Chairman is not supposed to actually arrange events . . . this may be the last year for the meal to be provided in its present form. Next year, my guess is that that the Committee will want to help support the meal, but not provide one free for everybody.’ Pam is anxious that everyone realises that her proposal was agreed by the other Trustees (Dee Laws, Ralph Butcher, and Russell Wright).

We have - at last! - just been given the ‘green light’ to apply for planning permission, so we finally want to know what people feel about the appearance of the Hall. Some classy bricks and a tiled roof would be good - but if we aren’t careful we’ll raise the cost too high, and that could mean we won’t get a grant. To comment on the alternatives, make sure you call to see the exhibition at the Nag’s Head next week from Wednesday-Friday, 25-27 September.

Waiting for the land . . . The Village Hall Foundation still doesn’t own the land, and the Trustees are anxious to finalise arrangements (which have been hanging in limbo for a year). Fenland are now advising on how to the negotiations could be brought to a conclusion, and we hope for prompt progress.

Small grants for families Now that school term has started, all the extra costs come along: soccer kit, school uniforms, books, etc. The Storers (the Herds and Bulls Grass Trust) may be able to offer grants to residents of Eastrea who face unexpected bills they can’t afford. The Committee feel that families with schoolchildren might like to apply, although anyone in the village with a specific need is able to apply. All applications are strictly confidential within the Committee. We don’t have much spare money, but the Trust would like to help if at all possible. Contact any of the Trustees - their names are above - or phone Peterborough 350 888 for a confidential chat if you’d like to know more.
