T RUSTEES
The Eastrea Village Hall Foundation reports important developments. This week we confirmed with a local development group that they can provide a sizeable grant towards construction. We have also managed to get through to the final short-list of Village Hall campaigns applying for financial support from the Big Lottery Fund. A public meeting for residents will be held at the Nag’s Head on Monday 19 May, commencing at 7.30 pm. Eastrea will need new Trustees. People who can help with surveys, administration, management, financial and legal matters are important to us. We also want to recruit anyone with enthusiasm who can add to our meetings and offer help with the future programme. Ring 350888 or 202852 this weekend (3 or 4 May) for more information!
STORERS LUNCH
E ASTREA S TUDENTS
The Storers lunch for the senior citizens of Eastrea was held during Easter week at the Nag’s Head. Two lunches were held, on Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 March. They were enjoyed by everyone. The Eastrea Dumplings lunch club meets on alternate Tuesdays and numbers attending have increased. For further information or to book a place ring the pub on 203333 or call in to speak to Dot. The first-ever Eastrea Beer Festival will be held at the pub in June, with a full programme of music and events.
Students from Eastrea who will need financial assistance for the next academic year are invited to submit an application for the 2008 Storers Student Bursary scheme. The Storers are a historic Eastrea Trust dating back to the 17th century. The Trust was originally set up to help the villagers get through the winter time, when Eastrea was cut off by water. It was important to have enough money for the people, and fodder for livestock, which is why the Trust is also known as the Herds and Bulls Grass.
NATURE RESERVE PROGRESS
Applicants can be of any age — we are keen to give an award to seniors as much as teenagers! Applicants should submit:
There are high hopes for the establishment of a nature reserve for Eastrea. We are surrounded by open countryside and there is much local wildlife so there is a need to preserve our environment and to ensure that this unique and ancient landscape is formally recognized. The Wildlife Trust has sent over assessors to carry out a preliminary inspection and Fenland District Council have now agreed to fund a survey to see if a County Wildlife Site could be established.
The Storers own land and the income is currently used to offer grants to Eastrea residents. One successful scheme takes the form of grants to students. We offer one or more bursaries and can also give student support grants. The closing date is 31 July.
1. A full c.v. with grades obtained and/or anticipated and giving details of spare-time activities or voluntary work. 2. Copies of examination certificates, etc., so far obtained. 3. Letter of application setting out the student’s position. 4. A supporting document from the year tutor or head teacher, plus telephone number for the academic referees to make contact. 5. Letter of acceptance from the college, etc., where the student will be studying.
All applications are dealt with in strict confidence. They must be delivered to The Clerk to the Storers at 6 Mayfield Rd, Eastrea.
