Eastrea Village News Student Grants — for All Ages! EASTREA students are encouraged to apply for a Storers grant once more this summer. The scheme covers all students in every age-group. We have given grants for study at college even if the applicant is of pensionable age, so don’t be discouraged. Each year trustees of The Storers plan to award a major bursary to
the most promising Eastrea student and in recent years more than one Bursary has been granted. Students must demonstrate financial need, and should have a good track record both of academic study and activities outside school or college. For further details just ring 350888 or send an email to mail@storers.org.uk for a prompt response.
HALL UPDATE BUILDING work on the new village hall is already two weeks ahead of schedule. The foundations were laid in July when some 200 tons of concrete were poured so work on building the hall has started at last. Construction will now proceed through the summer — the project budget is now £847,280. INSTALLING the ground-works on the new Eastrea Centre is local resident Mr Stewart Badger, who lives in Springfields. Known to the project team by his nick-name Badge, he has worked for Rose Homes for more than twenty years. Mr Robert Gregory, who is co-owner and managing director of Roses, says Badge is playing a crucial role in the project. “It has taken us some twenty months just to agree the position of lamp-posts on the new development,” he says. “The fact that Badge has such high standards means that we have been able to start work straight away — we know that the work will be of a standard that the authority will accept.” The heavy rain in June and July was a problem for the team, Badge reports. But the schedule had 6th August for concrete foundations to be poured, yet this work was complete on 19th July. “So far we are a fortnight ahead of ourselves,” says Badge. “No problems so far!”

GARETH Prentice (on the right in our picture) works for the Village Hall Trust advising on stage, sound and lighting. But this month Gareth has been selected to man a spotlight for both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in London. “I am on a following spot,” he says, “I’ll be tracking the major figures as they play their roles on TV. It’s very exciting!”
OFFICIAL VISIT THE FIRST official visitor to see work on the village hall was the Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Mr Hugh Duberly CBE seen here with Jan Ford of the Eastrea Village Hall trust. Mr Duberly came to tour the site of the new Eastrea Centre the day after 200 tons of concrete had been poured.
THE STORERS RETIRED residents gathered at the Nag’s Head for the 2012 spring luncheon organised by The Storers. This year we had 44 villagers who attended the event which was spread over two days. All villagers should remember that grants can be offered to residents of Eastrea who face financial hardship. The funds of The Storers are meant to provide support. The student grants and the annual lunch are both well publicised, but personal grants are always handled in total confidence.
