Eastre Eastrea a Village News

EASTREA CENTRE USERS S SETT ETTLE ETTLE IN BRILLIANT COLOURS and a range of tactile textures (above) mark out the work of the Eastrea quilter Mrs Sylvia Malins. Starting with scraps of discarded cloth, and sometimes with fabric samples she finds in sales or even in specialist shops, Mrs Malins creates stunning new artwork for daily use, or for display.

Mrs Mags Brown has the perfect surname to lead 1st Coates Brownies. As Barn Owl, she and her team are now meeting with their young members at the Eastrea Centre every Thursday from 6.00 pm.

After studying the art and techniques of quilting for years living in Los Angeles, Mrs Malins (seated) is now teaching the subject to enthusiasts in the Eastrea Centre boardroom on Thursdays starting at 10 am.

SLED DOG TO BE ‘MUZZLED AND RESTRAINED’ AT ALL TIMES MEETING NOTICE EASTREA NEWS has been given the full magistrate’s court decision over the conviction of Herbert Hatton, whose sled dog Koko badly mauled an Eastrea resident. Watchful villagers may note 1: Koko must be muzzled at all times in public except when travelling in a private vehicle when the dog must be restrained in a harness. 2: Koko must be kept on a non-extendable lead suitable for a dog of Koko’s size, not more than 2 metres in length. 3: Koko must not be coupled with any other dog on the same lead. 4: Koko must always be handled by or in the control of Mr or Mrs Hatton or a nominated person age 16 or over aware of this order. 5: Koko must not be exercised in any children's play area designated by the Local Authority. The dog need not be destroyed. Reason: The court has considered reports from a canine behaviour counsellor on Koko and his owner, Whittlesey Dog Training Society, Vets 4 Pets, Peterborough and Saints Sled Dog Rescue (SSDR). We are now satisfied that appropriate measures have been put in place and that an order for disqualification is not necessary. In light of the reports, we are satisfied that with appropriate measures in place, Koko would not constitute a danger to public safety. Community order made. The defendant must comply with the following requirements by 15/09/2013. Unpaid Work Requirement: Carry out unpaid work for 100 hours within the next twelve months. This work will be supervised by the responsible officer. Mr Hatton is to pay compensation of £1,000 to Mrs Janet Circit.

It is now time to elect some new committee members of Eastrea Village Hall Trust. Residents of Eastrea who are interested in the future management of the village hall are invited to a general meeting to take place at the Eastrea Centre, our new village hall, from 7.00 pm on Friday 4 October. The Trust’s current chairman will present a summary of progress and the trustees will be on hand to answer questions about the Eastrea Centre and the Trust. Residents with experience and ideas are encouraged to stand for election to the new executive committee of trustees. EASTREA NEWS will be closing down with the issue for December 2013. The production team, already overdue for retirement, will send out the final issue in time for Christmas. This newsletter began in August 2000. The first edition confirmed the site for a new village hall: the same site on which the hall now stands. A list of possible activities ran right down the page, and it is now interesting to see that some of these have already become reality at the Eastrea Centre: Brownies, Guides, Rainbows, Beavers. Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Women’s Institute events. Polling station. Dances, discos, lectures and talks. Evening classes e.g. pottery, languages. Youth club, mothers, toddlers and after-school club.

SANDIE BATKIN held a fundraising event recently at her home in Mayfield Road for Breast Cancer Awareness. Sandie is a recent member of Coates WI and says she was keen to organise such an event because she had herself suffered from the condition. The afternoon took the form of a strawberry tea and friends joined village residents for competitions and home-made snacks. Sandie says: “We raised £360 for the cause and I am so grateful to everyone who came.”

Council meetings, coffee mornings. Badminton, indoor tennis, basketball, table tennis, pool. Bingo, quizzes. Christmas, Easter, New-Year dinners. Recitals, concerts, films, videos, etc. Chess, draughts, backgammon, cards & dominoes. Bands, school plays, shows. Charity or fundraising events. Auctions, antiques, fairs of any type (arts and crafts etc). Young farmers, Venture Scouts. Institute meetings, choir, orchestra, choral practice. Sponsored activities, religious group meetings. Boot sales, etc. Stag and hen nights, karaoke, cabaret. Pre-school group. Doctor, vet, chiropody and maternity. Library centre, museum, historical document collection and advice centre.
