HAIL STORM INSURANCE
HAILSTONES larger than marbles battered Eastrea in the recent freak storm. Garden lamps were broken and the roofs of some conservatories were damaged. Our pictures (taken by Katie King, who was visiting the village at the time) remind us of the remarkable size of the hailstones. Such losses should be covered by your house insurance. If you need photographs to support a claim, then
TESCO PLAN
COUNTRY PARK SET TO GO AHEAD HARRIER DEVELOPMENTS of Manea have finally lost their bid to overturn the planning permission granted by Fenland for a new Sainsbury supermarket and country park between Eastrea and Whittlesey. Mr Richard Sears from the Harrier Developments company presented a detailed objection which the judge at the High Court admitted was ‘erudite’ but it failed to impress. The judge concluded it was ‘totally without merit.’ Sainsbury’s and Whitacre have since put up signs announcing their success and, if all goes well, work on the development should start in the autumn.

They are currently moving ahead with preparatory work on their plans for the Station Road site (above). Recently they have been reported as carrying out drainage surveys, so — who knows? — we could end up with two new supermarkets.

Anniversary Fun Day at the Eastrea Centre
IN JULY the Eastrea Centre marked their first year in operation. Resident Lisa Shaw posted on Facebook: ‘Eastrea Centre Anniversary, what a success NOT. Will look forward to reading about it in Eastrea Village News’. So here’s our report. The day was a marvellous occasion, but there were competing events and attendance was only half of last year’s. For instance, the Manor Leisure Centre were holding their summer event on the same day. Even so, there were many visitors from Whittlesey and Peterborough who stayed for the whole afternoon. Families enjoyed the many games, the Bistro was kept buzzing under the expert eye of Sue Parnell, Pete Hale gave us a superb music performance, and the weather was ideal. Next time we may plan to hold our Fun Day on Sunday, since there are so many competing events on Saturdays. And the full range of craft stalls may be invited back, rather than just a few. So what did those attending think? ‘A wonderful day out,’ said one of the parents. ‘The venue, and its whole atmosphere, are just perfect!’

On Thursday 4 September 2014, Mrs Sue Gunn is holding the first meditation evening at the Eastrea Centre. There will be a presentation and then some demonstrations of what is involved. The event runs from 7.00 to 8.00 pm and all are invited. There is no charge for anyone on that evening.

From our heritage displays of antique maps to swings and a bouncy castle, and from craft stalls to face-painting, there was something for everyone at our Fun Day. Says the committee, next year’s will be even better!
