Hello Bungalows, Goodbye Path
BUILDING work on the new Wype Road bungalows has been proceeding (slowly) and the first, No 92, has already been sold. These new homes lie on land which has for centuries been a footpath regularly used by local residents. In our last edition (right) we showed the site as published by Google Earth. A copy was sent to Fenland District Council. Construction that results in the stopping-up of a public path is officially frowned upon and we all hope that due attention was paid before our path was forever blocked.
EASTREA RULES IN WHITTLESEY Mr Phil Gamble of Mayfield Road opened his shop in Whittlesey four years ago. In an era when so many shops are closing down, Eastrea can be proud to know that one member of our community is helping to make local shopping a success.
EASTREA CENTRE PLANS FAMILY FUN DAY A reminder of summer—as the Hound Dogs headlined the 2018 Family Fun Day. This year’s commemoration of our opening on 17 July 2013 by Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, will feature more live music, games and competitions, and lots of fun for children. It is scheduled for Saturday 6 July from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm.

KING’S DYKE BOTTLENECK TO END AT LAST
ROAD BRIDGE: LATE BUT TAKING SHAPE Caught in a panoramic photo when clearing began in February 2019, we witnessed the start of work on our new road bridge at King’s Dyke, Whittlesey. Traffic on the A605 has been held up for many decades at the level crossing. The building of a road bridge has long been agreed in principle but has been subject both to cost increases and delays. This is a complex project and the official plan (left) shows the two major roundabouts and connecting roads. This new bridge was going to be in use last year; it is now scheduled to be opened by the end of 2020.
NAG’S HEAD GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Dudley’s Unique Disco Service features this dynamic picture on the Nag’s Head Facebook page. We can be proud of our village pub. Currently, one public house goes out of business in Britain every two days, but the Nag’s Head continues to expand its range of events with music and quiz nights.
EASTREA ON FACEBOOK Wedding tables at the village hall designed by Ms Nicola Brooks feature on the ‘Eastrea Centre’ page on Facebook. These beautiful pictures also feature on her page ‘Events at The Eastrea Centre’. Nicola runs a third Facebook page called ‘Eastrea Hall’. Ms Beverley Brightley has set up a page called ‘Eastrea Village Community Group’ to which all residents are invited to subscribe.
EASTREA CENTRE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The trustees of Eastrea Village Hall Trust (above) invite all villagers to their AGM at 7:00 pm on Tuesday 23 April 2019. They are (L-R) Mr Ritchie Walton, who chairs the committee, Mr Mac and Mrs Marsha Erysthee, and Mr Albert Brooks. New trustees and committee members are actively sought. The main requirement is to have time to volunteer; the Trust’s volunteers cannot be paid for their work. Please attend: refreshments will be provided!
