Youth Voice Iowa Caucus Learn the importance of youth participation in politics and read a summary of the six candidates who visited Des Moines high schoolers on Sept 22.
photos/R. Hayworth page editor/R. Hayworth story/R. Hayworth
Above, candidate Andrew Yang gives his opening remarks at the event. “The opposite of Donald Trump is an Asian man who loves math,” Yang said.
Six Democratic presidential candidates came to Des Moines to answer the questions that matter to high schoolers. Des Moines Public Schools and the Des Moines Register hosted a youth forum on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Roosevelt High School. In attendance were nearly 300 students and citizens in the Des Moines metro area and six democratic presidential candidates: Tulsi Gabbard, Michael Bennet, Bernie Sanders, Andrew Yang, Joe Sestak, and Tom Steyer. High school and college students (plus a few teachers) got the chance to ask questions of these candidates to find out their stances on the issues that matter to them, such as education, gun reform, climate change, mental health, and others. All candidates were asked how they would encourage young voter participation in politics. Historically, the youth electorate (meaning the young people who are able to vote) have been important. From automatic voter registration, to a voting of 16, these candidates shared their thoughts and ideas about youth participation in politics.
50 words about each candidate (not a comprehensive summary, based on what they said at the event)
Tulsi Gabbard
Andrew Yang
Tulsi Gabbard, Army National Guard Major, wants to focus on working together with conservative lawmakers to make a difference. In office, she would rejoin the Paris Climate Accords and increase dependence on renewable energy. She thinks it is important to have a President is not afraid to meet with other foreign leaders.
Andrew Yang, a self proclaimed “asian guy who loves math”, has progressive solutions to the problems of this generation. He wants to increase support for those dealing with mental health, create a constitutional amendment for climate change, and most intriguing, giving every person $1000 a month.
Michael Bennett
Joe Sestak
Michael Bennet, former school superintendent, places importance on opportunities for young people. This includes making sure that school funding is not based on property tax, as that correlates with underfunded schools in poor areas. He also advocates stricter gun laws, and shared an example of success in his state of Colorado.
Joe Sestak, a something veteran, finds the lack of accountability for doing the right thing in politics to be rare and wants to change that. He talked about how people who serve in the military often do not get to vote because of unregistered ballots. He also has a strong focus on equality and unity
Bernie Sanders
Tom Steyer
Bernie Sanders, one of the more well-known candidates, talks about dramatic transformation of the energy system towards renewable sources and the jobs that will be created in the process. He also mentioned the importance of citizen representation, the dangers of voter supression, and the need for a culture of respect for women.
Tom Steyer, a business owner and supporter, wants to support small businesses by reducing unfair banking practices. He recognizes that older generations did not worry about school shootings and wants that for this generation. He also wants to lower the cost of childcare to ease financial stress in working families.
Above, candidate Bernie Sanders answers a student’s question. “Does voter supression sound like democracy to you?” Sanders said.
Above, candidate Michael Bennet gives his opening remarks at the event. “ZIP code should not determine the education you get,” Bennet said.

The impact of an Eastside legend story/E.Guerra, J.Hildebrand, and K.Lilly On Sept. 28 2019, Mandy Reidburn lost her son. Butch and Marsha Reidburn lost a grandson. Brayden Smith, Kyla Ousley-lee and Jovanny Reidburn lost a brother. Many lost a cousin, an uncle and a nephew. Aaron O’Tool lost an infielder. Bill Eggers lost a student. Greg Schoon lost a wide receiver. Sean Head lost a best friend. Many close friends lost one of theirs. The Eastside lost one of their own; junior Dominic Reidburn in a fatal car accident. “He was dependable. He was driven, his leadership skills were above all. He was strong, dedicated, he worked, he was a perfectionist, he always wanted to get better,” O’Tool said. Reidburn played baseball and football for the Scarlets. He did more than contribute to the team as an athlete, he was a leader. Reidburn’s dedication to athletics was unreal. No matter how much he already had going on, he never turned down the opportunity to get better. “I kind of envied the athlete he was and his drive... He was the first one there, last one to leave and always gave 100 percent. If you weren’t competing to his level, he called you out and that’s what we don’t have enough of today,” O’Tool said.

Throughout his years of playing sports, his teammates became close friends. Those close friends became lifelong friends. “He had high standards for himself when he played and that’s what made him such a great athlete. He was an even better friend than athlete though. No matter what, he always wanted what was best for his brothers. He pushed all of us to be better,” junior Skyler VanRiper said. Reidburn’s ability in both athletics and friendships were top of the line. Reidburn’s close friends explained how he was great to be around. “We just admired his personality,” junior Alejandro Camacho Sanchez said. Friends loved Reidburn for his amazing and outgoing personality. He was a trustworthy person. “He was there for you. I would always tell him I would never tell him anything again and I would always tell him things anyways,” Head said. Reidburn’s personality was everyone’s favorite part about him. His smile radiated happiness outwards to others around him. Close friends had a lot to say about Reidburn. “He was always like, hard on us, making

Reidburn was an older brother figure to all his close friends. He only wanted what was best for everyone. He was always there for his friends and made sure they were okay. “Dom was a body builder, he motivated me to keep on going with everything I was doing. He was a great person,” sophomore Anthony Roman Barboza said. Reidburn attended May Goodrell Middle School. Many teachers loved Reidburn in their classroom because of the personality he had. He was never the troublemaker in the classroom. Although, he loved to joke around with peers and staff. He was only there to get his work done. “He was someone who didn’t quit. He would make you smile, even laugh when you didn’t want to. Something I learned from him is how to take something you didn’t like and make the best out of it,” Goodrell teacher Shannon Buckroyd said. He made the best out of every situation. If only we knew our
history. Opinion: African American history should be taught in schools
Story/A. Makier
LBGTQ History is being taught in our neighboring state, Illinois, over African American history. LGBTQ History is an important part of American History, but so is African American history. African Americans are being put second. Both histories are essential, but Black History should be taught in all schools. African American history is significant and should be taught to all students, not just African American students. Students are taught mathematics, science, and American history because it is important. We’re taught about all American wars and accomplishments, African Americans are viewed as weak people because of slavery. Black History focuses on the contributions that African Americans made in the past and continue to make, it’s valuable and should be taught in schools. Racism is still alive and well in America It is not possible to live in America without seeing incidents of racism every day. One can see incidents on the news when unarmed African American men are shot and killed by officials versus when heavily armed White Americans are causing mass shooting and being taken alive. It can be seen in high schools where Caucasian people think it’s cute and funny to say the ‘N’ word and posing for pictures as Blackface and posting on social media. It’s very offensive. Mr. Nellum is an African American student teacher who is becoming a history teacher, he’s studying at Grand View University. “African American history isn’t be taught in schools because of politics,” Nellum said. He believes Black History should taught in schools since LGBTQ History is also being taught. “I don’t know why we put African American studies to the side when it needs to be taught because of today’s kids and its more relevant,” Nellum said There Is more to African Americans than negative stereotypes There are still places in the world where students can go an entire educational career without ever interacting with African Ameri-

cans. In many places of the United States, neighborhoods, schools, and towns are still heavily segregated. Often this is caused by economic status, which means wealthier students have no personal experience with African Americans. Only what they see on television, in movies, news, and mostly on social media. Most are all negative views on African Americans and how people treat them. Andrew Reid is a 20th Century History Teacher. He’s been teaching at East High for two years. His mindset is very diverse when it comes to school. “America is more than the white guys developing the country, its multiracial and multiple everything,” Reid said.
“If there is no vision, there is no hope.” -George Washington Carver The Salad Bowl The United States is often nicknamed the Salad Bowl, a term coined back in the 1960s. The salad bowl means that instead of ‘melting together’ we coexist like ingredients in salad. Due to different races mixed up in one place, like vegetables all in a salad. Most people use ranch. Ranch is the color white and is drenched onto the salad. America is being whitewashed, which is the dressing for our Salad. Americans whitewash everything they get their hands on, just like their whole entire history. When students are being taught Black History in school, they get an understanding of many different types of people. Not just White Europeans and their history Scoot Roose is an East High US History and AP US History teacher. He’s been teaching at East for five years. He loves the diversity. “African American population con-

tinues to grow and it’s important for their history to be taught as much as White European History,” Roose said. Black history should be taught in schools. African Americans are a part of the United States history. Where do we go from here? Learning about Black History is good for all students, not just people of color. It helps with steps on opening with diversity, it helps students relate more to their history. It gives a full honest review on African Americans. These things benefit all students and make schools a place where all students can be valued, appreciated, and safe. Keonte White is a coach for multiple sports and is also a hall monitor. He’s an amazing person, he also had very amazing things to say. “We need to incorporate Black History in today’s society, being a black kid in America is hard enough due to social media,” White said. “There should be a class for African American studies where an African American teacher is teaching, it’ll allow our kids to know where they came from, and learning from someone who just looks like them, it’d be more personal and relatable,” Teaching such an intense history is hard enough for the teachers. It’ll be hard to get out of your comfort zone. That shouldn’t be an excuse. Teaching Black History benefits everyone, it should be taught all year long instead of only Black History Month.

I
t’s 10:38 in the morning. I’m walking to class minding my business as usual. I hear someone say, “Aye n*gga!” I turn around and look behind me to see who may have said it. I see a group of kids. None of them were black. I pondered on that situation for the rest of the day. The N- word is a common word used amongst and against minorities in the U.S. today. The N-word came amongst Caucasian vocabulary when slavery existed in the 1600s. It was used as a derogatory term towards African slaves to degrade them. They weren’t called black, African, or African American. Instead our ancestors were considered Negro, N*ggers, Jiggaboos, porch monkeys, baboons, etc. I take offense when I hear people of other races say the N- word because they can’t relate to what blacks have been through in America and how we are treated like we are worth nothing or not as smart as the other race. People think ‘oh well, all they do is gangbang, act ghetto or act ig-
norant’, but if anything, I find ignorance from those who stereotype black people, and those whom still use the word even though they know it offends black people. Is there ever an appropriate time to use it? I find it inappropriate for every single race

I find it inappropriate for every single race including blacks to use it in a professional setting. However, it’s fine for blacks to use it around friends. I only use the word when I’m with my black friends in a quiet personal setting, I may whisper it to my friend in a sentence while together in public or I will
only use it at home. I rarely hear blacks say it. Especially yelling it out loud to friends. I find it used more by other races. It baffles me. I was kind of hesitant to write this piece because of all the controversy. Some people think it’s just a word or its okay to say as a representation of saying ‘friend’. A lot of people just like me take offense to this word because other races don’t understand the meaning behind it when they say it. I’m hoping there will be awareness to the ignorance you’re showing when using this word with an ‘A’ and an ‘ER’ Blacks have taken this word and used it as a representation of showing love or empowerment to our brothers and sisters. White actors would use black makeup to mock and mimic blacks because blacks were not allowed to act. Others still mock this costume and use it for halloween parties or events.

Story/F.Centeno On Sept.3rd, East High students voted from 13 candidates to represent them for the 2020 school year. The winners were announced during the last few minutes left during third hour. Many students were anxious to hear if who they voted for won. Ahnet Boggess and Kade Dolphin were announced for class President and Vice President, then for Treasurer, which was won by Leslie Hoang and for Secretary, Priscilla Macias.

-Prisicilla MaciasEven though Macias announced that she was running last minute, she wanted to run because she wanted to take a chance to step out of her comfort zone and got to be a part of East. She described her process through this election as something really important to her and that she was excited to be more involved at East. “She’s someone that motivates you and always has your back,” senior Mayela Chaidez- López said. The secretary’s job is to take notes during the student government meetings. They know what is happening throughout the school and work more with the president and vice president. Macias saw this opportunity to not just be involved but to make others feel like they can all have voices at East. “Over the years since I was a freshman, I’ve seen the same people run and try everything and I was tired of seeing the popular kids,” Macias said One of Macias goals for the future of East is to have more opportunities for students to be more involved. She wants people to feel welcome and that the activities at East aren’t just made for the ‘popular’ kids. Not only is Macias secretary, but she is also involved in Educational Talent Search, Science Bound, National Honors Society and Cross Country. “If you’re shy just go for it, you’ll learn what you’re comfortable with and not,” Macias said

Buckle up, Latinos are taking action New group forms at East High School Story / J. Martinez-Aviles

elping their community, rising up, and breaking down barriers. This is Latinos In Action. East High School is the very first school in all of DMPS and in all of Iowa to participate in the program Latinos in Action, or LIA for short. LIA was founded in 2001 by José Enriquez in Utah. Throughout the years, LIA has begun to expand. As of this year, LIA has 11 states with Latino students in action. While taking this year-round class, students are taught the principles of leadership. LIA was made specifically for Latinos to get involved in their community, set an example for the children, and be prepared for college, then life. “Finally, a class I could be a part of and relate to...I was waiting for it to start. I expect to see more opportunities for Latinos,” student Michelle Hernandez said. The youth organization was made to help Latinos be their best in four different categories.“The end goal of everything we do is to empower Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. We accomplish this by focusing on four pillars: leveraging personal and cultural assets, excelling in education, serving the community, and developing leadership skills,” according to the LIA website. The year-round class helps educate students in the standards needed to be a Latino in action. LIA has many goals and ambitions for their students, but the top one is for the Latin community to stand out and make a difference. As many as 150 students applied to be in the LIA class during the 2018-2019 school year, but only 35 were chosen to be in the LIA class for the 2019-2020 school year. Teacher Ruby Herrera is the first teacher in all of Iowa to teach a LIA class, but believes that her and her students have the

potential to start off the year successfully. “I was tired of the negativity. This is exactly what these kids needed. I never really stopped and thought, ‘Oh, I’m the first one to do this’. Latinos In Action came out of the need of students. The wrong stereotypes have come out, but this is an opportunity for students to believe in themselves again,” Herrera said. LIA has many things to offer and can work as an advantage to make students better people, and eventually, leaders. Herrera points out what LIA has to offer to East High School students. “It has the opportunity to bring out the leader in everyone. It brings them closer to their community,” Hererra said. Just like every great teacher, with the help of the LIA organization, Herrera has a way to form these Latino students into the leaders of tomorrow. “More than strategy, is building familia. We are going to have like three different committees...We have a vice presidents and president. So the idea behind it is that slowly, we gradually release, and the student is taking ownership to take on the class. Basically I am going to be there to guide and support,” Herrera said. When asked about how they feel in being the first 35 in all of Iowa and DMPS to be in LIA, all the students said that they felt honored and privileged to be part of such an organization. Junior Leslie Martinez is one of the students who applied and was accepted. “I feel very honored. First 35 in the state...that’s crazy. I think like there is a lot to learn. We are an example, other people are going to see,” Martinez said. Most people might think that LIA has no point or doesn’t help anyone other than the people in the group. However, LIA helps East High students and their community as well. Senior Caroly Coronado-Vargas gives us an insight on how LIA benefits people’s lives. “It showcases us being more involved in our community. There is an opportunity for us to help the younger kids and be their role models, so they don’t get stuck in the cycle, they have someone to look up to,” Vargas said.
LIA might have started in 2001, but the seed of that generation are fluorishing in this generation. Amounting to that, the new seed of this generation will be seen in future generations. LIA will continue to impact todays, and tomorrows youth. Junior Andy Montalvo expresses how future society will be impacted by LIA. “I hope that as it continues, it grows. The more Latinos become motivated and become more involved in the community, so we can get the representation that is needed. Future generations will be impacted because what we do now, will be what the kids of tomorrow will deal with, which is a good thing because that is what LIA is for,” Montalvo said. Being part of LIA is a hard decision, considering today’s politics. This not only affects adults, but East High students as well. Many might choose to let that bring them down, but others will choose to let that motivate them to be even better. Junior Iris Amaya-Leiva shares her feelings on why she joined LIA, knowing how certain people feel about Latinos. “We need more representation in the world. Especially now with the United States being full of racism and injustice, and hatred... Focus, because no one can take your education away. We are going to be different,” Amaya said. The East High staff and administration encourages and supports the Latino community and expect to see them thrive throughout the school year. Administrator Anthony Gianaras explains his feelings about LIA. “I am excited for it. I am happy for them to take on a mentoring role. East is not the same without them. Some of them are the most hard-working student at East,” Gianaras said. On the top left is Teacher Ruby Hererra, with her LIA students Caroly CoronadoVargas, Christian Cano Sotelo, Jose Garcia-Reyes, Alicia Mendoza, Alicia CamarilloVelazquez, Jesus Martinez- Aviles, Diana Aguayo, Korina VallesDelgado, and Leslie Martinez.

LIA founder José Enriquez knows what it’s like to be a Latino in America. There are many stereotypes that put Latinos down, but Latinos can still make a difference in America for being good people. “Not only will it be the largest minority population in the US but it is the fastestgrowing. It is almost 60 million people in the U.S. Taking their culture, talent, bilingualism and mentoring the younger students coming up behind them will create a pipeline of Latino Leaders,” Enriquez said. Enriquez stresses the importance of leadership in this community. “Remember that ‘True Leadership comes Not from those who seek that position but from those who can Position themselves to serve those who see’ There are many people in our communities that seek many things and it is to our advantage as Latinos to Position ourselves to serve those who need us the most and who are seeking help,” Enriquez said. Nowadays, there is a lot of opposition towards Latinos. Many people think wrongly of them, and even think that they don’t belong here. Our own president, here in the U.S has belittled Mexicans specifically, calling them criminals, rapists, threatening to separate families, and build a wall to keep America and Mexico separate. Building upon this, in the summer of 2019, many Hispanic/ Mexican families were separated, leaving children abandoned, and their parents unable to do anything about it. Latinos In Action was made to stand up to things like this. Humanity as a whole did not go through so much just to end up like this. There needs to be a change in this cycle of racism, violence, and hatred. Latinos In Action is the answer. Opinion: The deep reasons to climate change
Day, night, hour, minute, second... We damage what protects and holds us. Climate change is something that could end our world. Climate change is when the Earth has new weather patterns that can be devastating. We can experience superstorms, wildfires, droughts, and acid rain or heavy snow. To put it in perspective, our whole weather pattern will be broken, things will be out of order and be taken to extreme levels. All these things are caused from our own acts, things like factories, burning fossil fuel, destroying trees, etc. All these releases what we call Co2 into the air into the atmosphere. Having Co2 in the atmosphere helps keep our planet warm, and perfect for life, but too much Co2 isn't good for our planet. It will create a greenhouse effect, where more thermal energy is trapped inside the atmosphere, causing our planet to warm up too much. Also, causing the bad weather patterns, that is why we can get things like heaving rain (too much rain), acid rain or snow because the heat causes big amounts of water to evaporate. There are tons of ways Co2 is getting released into the air. A lot of the vehicles used in everyday life release Co2 into the atmosphere,
imagine all the vehicles that use fossil fuel, the numbers are tremendous. Trees take in Co2, holding it for us basically, but then here we go cutting down massive quantities of trees. Once a tree is cut down or destroyed, the Co2 is released into the atmosphere. If we don’t do anything, the surface of the earth will heat up and cause droughts, the intensities of storms will increase and cause major damage, kill civilians, The ice in the North and South Pole will kepp on melting, causing water level rises and destroying the homes of many animal species. We will have big fires like the Amazon Forest fire. This will cause both ashes and Co2 to come out, making our oxygen/air dangerous because of the ashes. There is another gas that is called Methane; this gas is also a big reason for climate change. It also has a greenhouse effect, where it traps heat in the atmosphere. This gas can come from wetland locations, animal digestions, oil and gas industries. If places that use methane have unstable pipes, methane can leak out. Although methane lasts less longer than Co2 in the atmosphere, it is way more effective when it comes to absorbing heat
energy coming from the sun. There are two other gases that also contribute to climate change, Nitrous Oxide and Fluorinated gases. Nitrous gases can come from things like agriculture and industrial activities. Fluorinated gases can from the production process of making aluminum and semiconductors. These gases also can have a greenhouse effect, although both gases produce a smaller amount of greenhouse effects, that doesn’t mean their percentage can't rise. Now taking it to the political side, there are political leaders who deny that climate change exists. All just for money, companies that cause a lot of Co2 exposure pay political leaders to deny that there is no climate change, the political leaders have strong ties with the company, and they want to keep it that way. Although there are straight facts on climate change, a lot of political leaders will still deny it, and it is an ongoing thing, that is hurting the big idea to save and heal the earth. We need to take steps and make changes now, or else we will be the ones taking the severe damage in the future.

GLOBAL WARMING: Story/ G. Gwyin
Opinion What is global warming? According to the EPA it’s a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. Simplified, global warming is the warming of the earth due to increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Over the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. There is about 18 months until there is permanent damage on the planet, we call home. But how do scientists know global warming is even real? According to climate.nasa.gov, scientists have used “Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale,” NASA also explains that heat-trapping of carbon dioxide was noticed in the mid-19th century. It was noticed once the ice cores of Greenland and Antarctica started to respond to the changes in greenhouse levels. Now, the evidence of rapid climate change is even more compelling. Problems: Let’s start with the global temperature rise. According to the same NASA article, the planets average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century. This change is purely due to increases in carbon dioxide and other human related activities. Most of the warming has occurred in the past 35 years. Five of the warmest years on record have taken place since 2010. Not only was 2016 recorded as the hottest year to take place but, January through September were the warmest months during 2016. The Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets have now decreased. Greenland has lost about 286 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 127 billion tons of ice per year during the same time period and both the extent and thickness has decreased over the last several decades. Now the melting of ice has attributed to sea level rises. Globally, sea lev-
PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS els have risen about eight inches in the last two decades. But in the last century it has doubled and is slightly increasing. Due to sea levels rising there is an increasing chance that inland habitats will be destroyed due to flooding. According to National Geographic, higher sea levels are associated with dangerous typhoons and hurricanes. This contributes with stronger storm strains and these can strip away anything that is in its path. According to another National Geographic article that includes ideas that there are multiple different solutions, starting with changing our human behavior within the environment and how we consume our energy. Our vehicle fuel, more increasing amounts of solar and wind power and biofuels from organic waste. But mainly protecting our forests. Even scientists are coming up with ways to lower the permanent effects including building better batteries to store more renewable energy, capturing carbon dioxide from power plants and other sources with the goal of storing it underground or turning it into valuable things such as gasoline. Lastly, adapting to change is the biggest solution. There are flood free regions that are suffering from out of control flooding, hurricans and storms and costal states are getting destroyed from out of control wildfires. A new way of ideas has come into light according to this same article. Those “Include managing or preventing land erosion, building microgrids and other energy systems built to withstand disruptions, and designing buildings with rising sea levels in minds.” There have been recent books that have included solutions as well, Drawdown and Designing Climate Solutions. The ideas vary but put out the same message: We already have many of the tools needed to address climate change. Some of the concepts are broad ones that governments and businesses must implement. We need a plan now, one that works. We need the funding, we need more voices to speak out about this situation, we need people to pay attention to the consequences and we need them to take it seriously. The real question is: If asked to help save our only home, the home on the verge of the beginning of a mass extinction… would you?
Q&A with Ms.Barry: 1. What are your thoughts on global warming? Right now, my thoughts on global warming are more pessimistic than I would like. I am afraid for the people who are making our policies and what they think of Global warming since many are not receptive to the scientists who work in the field. 2. Do you think we are doing enough to prevent climate change and global warming? do you think there is more that we can do? We are not doing enough to protect ourselves from the events that will be caused from climate change. There is of course more we can do, my personal beliefs are that it starts with policy change, and in order to get policy changes you must first change the minds of the society. A simple example of that is the huge push for plastic straws being removed. In the grand scheme of things eliminating plastic straws isn’t going to have a super drastic effect on the overall global temperature. However, people cared about the animals in the ocean, so they pushed to this and restaurants/people followed. similarly, to years ago when they tried to get society to just simply switch light bulbs. Individual human action is great but not enough at this point. we need governments to step in, and they have in the past. For example, the clean air act was because of the lack of regulation on factories polluting the air and it has worked, the air quality improved. 3. Do you believe we, as humans, have impacted global warming? Why do you believe that? We are the cause of global warming. Previous historical warming events were connected to shifts in plates releasing magma from the core. That is not causing this warming.

Crisis at the border
What’s happening at the camps? Story/ F.Centeno
Cramped cells. No access to clean water, toiletries or even food. Sleeping on concrete floors. Wondering when if you will ever get out of here. Overcrowding of over 50,000 people. Over 11,000 children, some without their parents. Over 24 deaths, including, over seven children have died. This is where thousands of immigrants are being held in detention centers run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies in states close to the Mexican border. Most are in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. “There hasn’t been a lot of news coverage because it’s not what the government wants to show, but it is happening, and it shouldn’t happen,” junior Andy Montalvo-Martinez said. Undocumented individuals have been taken away from their families and loved ones left with no traces of where they could be held. Many children are left home alone without seeing a parent or even both. Some children even have fears that one day when they come home their mom or dad won’t be there. So where are these individuals being taken? ICE agents take them away to ICE detention centers, with about 15 across the United States. According to CNN, state that conditions in these centers are dangerously overcrowded and many immigrants are dying due to the lack of any medical care from diseases. There’s been outbreaks of the spread of the flu, lice, chicken pox, and scabies. There have been nearly 30 reports of abuse, sexual assault and mistreatment of detained children in the detention center in Arizona. U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (AOC) has visited these facilities and stated that, “There’s been abuse in these facilities, this was than on their best behavior and they put them in a room with no running water and these women were being told by CPB officers to drink out of the toilet.” U.S. Congress has held six hearings about the reports of children in cages and family separations. Customs and Border protection has reduced the number of children in custody for more than 2,500 in mid-June and as reported in July, the number of children has dropped to 350. In an interview with reporters, AOC gave the following quote after visiting the facilities, “What we saw today was unconscionable, no child should ever be separated from their parents. No child should ever be taken from their family. No woman should ever be locked up in a pen when they have done no harm to another human being.”

Ever since information about these conditions has been brought to people’s attention, many have been fighting that the Flores agreement should be applied. The 1997 Flores settlement agreement requires the government to release children from detention centers without any unnecessary delay to their parents or other adult relatives. The agreement also states, officials must hold detained minors in safe and sanitary conditions such as with food, clean water, medical assistance etc. The agreement was named after Jenny Lisette Flores, a 15-year-old girl who fled from her country, El Salvador. She tried to enter the U.S to be with her aunt but was arrested at the border and placed in a juvenile detention center. The aunt was refused custody since they can’t release minors to third party adults. American Civil Liberties Union filed a class-action suit and the Flores agreement was made. In 2015, U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee ruled that Flores requirements apply to both unaccompanied minors and children with their parents. “Law isn’t always moral, law doesn’t always justify things,” Montalvo- Martinez said. On July 2, protesters were outside of various U.S. senators and representatives’ offices in Chicago, New York and Indianapolis. Their three main demands were to close the camps, for not one dollar for family detention and deportation and to bear witness and reunite families. Many groups were there such as United We Dream, a youth led immigrant group, American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, Families Belong together, a group fighting family separation. Presidential candidates, reporters and a team of doctors and lawyers visited facilities and returned with allegations of unsanitary conditions. The department of health and human services, which manages shelters for migrant children, received three billion dollars. The number of children in facilities has decreased to 200 in June from 2,700 in May. Today, one known nonprofit organization called Raíces which according to their website, is a nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees. They are currently working to help free children and offer legal advice to migrants who are seeking asylum in the U.]allow for this.” AOC commented during a hearing on migrant detention centers.

Opinion: Why you shouldn’t support the camps Story/ E.Guerra
As one of the first-born generations here in the United States for my family, Immigration is a big deal to us, especially for children. The whole issue with children in these camps that are held in 15 different locations is a big crisis now. These kids could be as young as newborns to almost 18 years old. I believe that the whole issue with the children in the camps are inhumane. These kids do not have the proper food or water. Theses detention centers do not have enough to feed these children and families. Also, the ICE agents do not even care for these children.. These kids need to get the proper food and water to be able to be healthily and adapt to the new environment they are in. These children and people are living in a space built for 125 when there are about over 900 people in these detention centers. Forcing these people in these little spaces without their parents or even with their parents is still a horrible thing to do. Due to so many people in there, many kids and people are dying from not getting the proper health care that they need, and many don’t adapt to the sickness in a new environment also not knowing what others have. Not having the proper health care can make people weaker. These people sleep on the concrete floor without a support for their backs and without covers to be able to cover their babies or kids to be able to be warm at night. Many expecting mothers do cross the border to give their children a better future. Many of them get to the border and get detained in the detention centers. They would give birth to their children while in the detention center and would not be able to see their child. After giving birth, these mothers didn’t get the
proper health care, they need to take care of themselves. This isn’t fair to these mothers. Getting their kids taken away from them is very tough on a parent. Many people also come to the United States for the bad things that are going on in their own country. There are times that violence in the country is horrible not only to the adults but to the children in these countries. Also, the gangs in the country would make it hard and cause people to live in fear. The threats they would get from these people due to the gangs would scare them off, which forced them to make a rough decision to come to the United States. It’s not easy for these families and children to come here the “right way” due to the expenses of getting a visa, green cards, and even citizenship. It also takes a while for these people to get the approval for getting the permit or citizenship. It’s a long process and these people can’t wait any longer to get here for a better future. These people come to bring their children here for a better future. In Latin America the conditions aren’t the greatest for these people, due to being poor and not having the greatest opportunity for education. As a first-generation child being born here in the United States, getting the greatest education and being able to go to college is a blessing and an opportunity. Being able to go further than my family is the greatest thing ever to have the opportunity to build the greatest future for my future self and for my future family. Parents and grandparents want what is better for their children’s future. Every immigrant that wants to come to the United States to build a better future should have the opportunity. People are human beings, not animals. They deserve proper care, it’s not fair for these people to be detained for wanting a better future for their families and themselves. Is it really a crime for wanting what’s best for your family? We need to help these people with these conditions and try to figure out ways to help solve these problems. Families and children need to be protected even if they aren’t here legally. We need to step up and speak up for a change.

A C N L C E CULTURE story and page editor/M. Hernandez
The new internet phenomenom
You scroll through your timeline and see selfies and memes floating by until you see a post about a celebrity that made a mistake. Although you have never heard of them it is hard to not cancel them along with everyone else, soon you begin retweeting, sharing, and posting about the situation even though you may not have all the information. This is cancel culture. Throughout the summer, cancel culture was very prevalent online and suddenly ‘canceling’ someone was the new phenomenon. To be canceled means that one is isolated from the rest of the internet and most of the time, results in the loss of friends and followers. When someone is canceled on the internet it spreads from one tweet about them to thousands. This phenomenon has made the internet a somewhat toxic place with a new person getting ‘canceled’ every week. It can be a difficult situation to navigate, because most of the time it can be ‘he-said, she-said' and one side may be the ‘correct’ side, but it may not be factual. At the beginning of summer, a huge beauty youtuber named James Charles got into a big scandal with his ex-best friend, Tati Westbrook. This resulted in him losing millions of subscribers and her gaining millions. Charles became famous a few years ago after he was the first male CoverGirl.
were also big on the internet. People all over the internet started making memes and gossiping about the situation. After Charles made a video ‘debunking’ what was said in Westbrook’s video, he gained almost all the followers that he lost back while Westbrook lost a few million that she gained. This is a prime example of cancel culture in action. A person is isolated from the internet because of a mistake they made, usually in the past but sometimes recent, they lose followers and friends. This impacted him tremen“ To be canceled means dously and it seemed as though he went into that one is isolated from a dark place. Self-care: getting personal We all know that feeling of when summer is starting to come to an end. It seems as if everywhere you turn there’s an ad or a billboard about school. Anxiety takes over your body and maybe even anger and sadness. When it comes to school, teenagers experience a lot of stress and anxiety. Not even just for school but through life in general. Kids are surrounded by today’s society and feel as if they are expected to live up to those expectations. To be honest,…it’s draining. In this article, you’ll learn all about taking care of yourself and your mental health while dealing with stressful situations or to just be kind to yourself! What is self-care? “I believe self-care is a very important thing in life. Doing small things like taking a bubble bath or putting on a face mask can really change my mood,” senior Natalie Alston said. Self-care ranges from different types of things but you must find a routine that works perfectly for you. It’s all about making yourself feel comfortable, at ease. Self-care is about having “me” time and getting your thoughts together. Sometimes life situations have our thoughts completely jumbled up and in a frenzy. It’s a good way to calm yourself down. Take a breather and relax. When is the perfect time for self-care? The perfect time for self-care is whenever you feel it is right. “I do self-care at least twice a week. Toward the beginning of the week and toward the end,” Alston said. It’s all about adjusting to what works best for you. Pick a day where you aren’t busy and won’t
be interrupted or distracted by anything. This ‘me’ time is all about positive vibes and YOU. It’s important to set aside at least one day a week to have it all to yourself. Forget the assignment that’s due two weeks from now for a day. Forget all the drama that’s going on in your life and forget anything that’s making a negative impact on your life. Make time to take care of you and your mental health. What are some self-care ideas? “I know when I do self-care for myself, I drink water every day. It’s what our body needs.” North High School student, Devona Singleton said. Water is a self-care item that should be used daily, fueling your body with the things that it needs. Water is self-care believe it or not. Eating healthy is most definitely a form of self-care. Try meal prepping or changing up how you eat. You do not have to cut out sweets and your favorite chips but putting nothing but junk food into your body may be the reason as to why you feel sluggish, tired and stressed out. “I like to soak in bubble baths at the end of the week,” Singleton said, “It helps me relax from the weeks built up stress.” Singleton said. A bubble bath towards the end of the week is another good idea. Soak your body in your favorite scented bubbles, even add some candles and turn on your favorite song. Want to take your relaxation to a new level? Using a body scrub and a bath bomb can add some affects to your winding down time. Scrub all those bad feelings away along with that dead skin. Use the bath bomb to change the color of your bath water. Feeling like scented roses? Want to swim in the galaxy? Your options are endless.
“Sometimes self-care isn’t always about masks and bubble baths,” SCAVO student, Tatiyanna Hayes said. “Sometimes self-care means a good cry.” Hayes Said. This is entirely true. It’s okay to want to cry. It’s okay to use an off day dressed in your pajamas with a tub of ice cream, curled up in bed all day. And well,…crying. Maybe you need a day to just cry it out, let all those emotions flow out of you till it’s all done. Believe it or not, letting out what you’re holding in always results in you feeling a whole lot better. Self-care items? Invest in body scrubs, lotions, body mists, face masks, hair products, lounge wear, skin care products such as toners, cleansers, scrubs, the list goes on and on. None of these are a need but they would make your self-care process that much more relaxing! “Sweatpants are a must have. Feeling sad? Sweatpants and hoodie it,” Hayes said. What you wear plays an impact. If you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing then you’re probably not going to be very happy. Starting a skin care routine automatically makes you feel good about yourself and honestly, makes you feel productive. That includes body care too. You don’t have to do it daily but find a time of the week that works for you. Lotions and perfumes are good, too. If you smell like your favorite scent, your confidence might boost up and it’s always nice to smell good. To tie it all together, get items that will make you feel good about yourself. Find a day that’s perfectly clear of distractions and make it all about you.

You don’t need to impress everyone just be yourself. The first few years of high school, I wanted to fit in with everyone. I wanted everyone to like me and now that I’m a senior, I realized that I already had everyone that I needed in my life.” What is your biggest regret about high school? “Not going to the football and soccer games and also not joining clubs.” Advice for freshman “To be the real you, don’t try to be someone else. Find real friends. Pay attention in school and go to all your classes. Also, have fun because high school flies by fast. Be intentional about making memories and having fun. Be the person who cheers for their team, or be the person who asks someone to the dance.”
FROM SENIORS
Mayela Ashely Luvan Chaidez How was the first day of freshmen year? “I was pretty lost, I didn’t know what to expect or where to go, but I got the hang of it after the second or third day of school.” What have you learned throughout your years in high school? “I learned to value time, and to not slack off.” What is your biggest regret about high school? “I regret my freshman year because I didn’t go to any of the football games, I wasn’t involved. I went to school and back home.” Do you have any advice for incoming freshman? “Just be involved and throw yourself out there even if it feels like you shouldn’t. Try new things. I didn’t know how I felt at first about joining a new sport, But now I am happy I did, because I love tennis.”

Do activities. And always have fun because I literally waited till my senior year to have fun.” What is your biggest regret about high school? “Not doing enough. More activities and clubs. I didn’t join any sports till my senior year, I didn’t join soccer till my senior year, and I regret.” Do you have any advice for incoming freshman? “Just have fun and live up your high school career because it goes really fast.”
How was your first day of freshman year? “My first day of freshman year was scary. Because I didn’t really anyone and the school was a lot bigger than my middle school.” What have you learned throughout your years in high school? “The things I learned in my four years of high school is that not everyone will want to be your friend and to just focus on passing your classes.” What is your biggest regret about high school? “My biggest regret is not taking things seriously. Thinking it was all games and fun.” Advice for freshman “Stay focused on school. You really don’t need friends to survive high school.”

- Of Eating Disorders -
Story/A.Solis
Emotions are complex and people have many ways to cope with them, using food to cope is a very common and unhealthy way of coping. To many, eating seems like such a mundane and simple task. Your body lets you know when it’s time to eat, often using hunger pains and your growling stomach to alert you it’s time to eat and so you do. For others it’s not that simple, eating can seem like a task, something to dread. When you suffer with an eating disorder, your relationship with food is toxic and so is your relationship with your body. There are many things that can trigger an eating disorder from a distorted body image or using food as an escape from complicated feelings. A distorted body image, being surrounded by the constant diet culture in society, and the rude remarks people say about your body can manifest into something that can make you feel like your body isn’t good enough. These problems can follow you throughout life, Natalia Rose Olives was only 13 when she started struggling with food and her body and it followed her throughout her adulthood nine years later. “I fit the criteria for Anorexia. My day consisted of two eggs for breakfast and a coke for lunch, and maybe a few bites of dinner, which wasn’t too hard to hide because my family rarely ate together since they were all so busy.” Olives said. There are several different types of eating disorders, but the most well-known one is Anorexia. It’s where the person would knowingly starve themselves and restrain from eating. There’s also Bulimia, it’s where the person would throw up whatever food they’ve eaten in order to get rid of it. Or they even use laxatives to get rid of it. Binge eating disorder where the person would eat a large amount of food even when they’re full. For those who don’t fit the criteria of just one there’s the title of Eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) where the persons pattern of eating falls under more than one category. For example,
if someone shows symptoms of anorexia but also bulimia and they sometimes have periods where they binge eat, so identifying what eating disorder they have is less clear so EDNOS is the best fit for people in those circumstances. Although eating disorders revolve around food, it also revolves around the body. People with eating disorders can also fall into the habit of obsessively exercising. “I worked myself to the bone in the gym, especially since I was constantly on treadmills in the Cardio room,” Olives said Over exercising while being malnourished can cause injuries, people tend to pass out or become dehydrated from how hard they end up pushing their bodies. Many are unaware of the consequences that eating disorders can cause physically. For females, if they push their body too much, they can miss periods and just stop having them all together, which may sound like a blessing to some, but is actually very serious as it stunts growth and development for young girls. The range of problems that eating disorders can cause on the body can go from mundane things like ending up having anemia from lack of iron and minerals from not eating, to having a full-on heart attack because of the strain put on your heart. “I was anemic, and my period had stopped, eating hurts now. Anything more than a basket of fries feels like my stomachs going to burst,” Olives said. It’s a bit different for those with bulimia, throwing up meals can lead to your teeth rotting from the stomach acid. When you throw up, the stomach acid can rip up your throat lining and stomach lining over time. To those who resort to laxatives aren’t safe either as excessive use of laxatives can lead to severe dehydration, weakness and fainting to more severe thing like kidney damage. “I purposely drink coffee on an empty stomach because I know it’ll act as a laxative, and I drink tons of water to keep myself feeling full,” Olives

said . You can’t really get over an eating disorder. You can’t just make an anorexic person just eat a burger or tell a person with binge eating disorder to stop eating. It’s a long process, with enough therapy and support it is possible to change. An eating disorder can be very tricky to deal with as there are many things that can trigger it. “Since I could remember, my family’s been on diets and constantly talking about weight. My dad would always grab my love handles and pointed out every roll, every time I gained weight, every extra portion I’d take, it really goes to your head when you’re just a kid,” Olivia said. Eating disorders are a pattern of eating and just like patterns, they’re hard to break. To change a toxic mindset is possible, and it all starts with asking for help. It takes time but it’s a journey towards self-love. Being able to be comfortable with your body and being able to eat without criticizing yourself for it. Surrounding yourself around positive people is very important. Negative people can feed that negative mindset. “When I get bad, my friends notice, and they constantly check up on me, my best friends keeps tabs on me asking if I’ve had breakfast and inviting me over for dinner almost every night, having a support system helps, but it’s also just as easy to say no to dinner, I guess it’s all up to me whether I want to get better,” Olives said The signs that show that someone is struggling from an eating disorder aren’t always clear. Not only that, but most people with eating disorders are in denial. They believe what they’re doing isn’t hurting them. People with eating disorders aren’t always open about they’re eating struggles. The warning signs aren’t always clear so having help from a professional is very helpful. Taylor Ash is a certified therapist who helps people with mental health problems and eating disorders. Being able to see the warning signs as soon as possible is very important “Some of the signs that someone is struggling with an eating disorder are dramatic change in weight, either gain or loss that cannot be explained by another medical condition, change in clothing to either hide or show changes in body, excusing self around or during meal times, excessive interest in calories or exercise regimens, changes in bodily regulations (such as menstrual cycle), withdrawing, hiding food or avoiding it all together,” Ash said Anything is progress, if someone with an eating disorder manages to eat something be proud. If they managed to stop themselves from binge eating be proud and even if they couldn’t, don’t beat them over the head about it, because they’re probably already beating themselves up about it already. Allow them to forgive themselves because only they can change themselves. If they managed to keep a meal down today be proud, be supportive, because eating disorders are tough and so are the people who suffer from them. There are many ways to help someone struggling with an eating disorder
“Asking for help, talking about feelings, and exploring the reasons behind the disordered eating are all great places to start. There are several online resources in addition to seeking out professional help as well. Encourage them to talk to someone about their struggles. Invite them to do things even if it involves food, ask if there are things they need help with, suggest light activity such as walks or things to do outside. Most importantly encourage them to get professional help or a trusted adult to talk too.” Ash said. Coping skills are very important for those struggling from eating disorders. The eating disorder itself is already a form of coping, a very dangerous and unhealthy way of coping. “Eating disorders are often a form of coping skills themselves. People will utilize food or the control of food to manage or deal with feelings/difficult situations. Coping skills would be things to replace the urge or need to engage in the disordered eating behaviors (bingeing, purging, restricting). Things to do would be to distract yourself (go for walks, listen to music, call a friend/ family member), find ways to express the emotions rather than engaging in the disordered eating patterns (sports, music, art,

deep breathing), and talking to someone or asking a trusted friend/adult for support or expressing your feelings,” Ash said. Bringing light to such a taboo subject is important, it’s important to understand what eating disorders are and how to help. Eating disorders have a higher death rate than any other mental illness, knowing that, making sure to get help is a must. Those suffering with one can get better, and it all starts with bringing awareness and resources to the light and letting them know that they aren’t alone.

How to recover from and handle unfortunate life events Story / V Chavez
At one point, we all encounter painful moments. It’s life what are you going to do? But when moments like these occur, what do you do in order to help yourself ? Recently I have gone through something that has changed my life completely. I will admit it’s hard and will always take time to heal any wound, but with family, friends and my own strength I slowly started overcoming this moment in my life. It wasn’t an easy process and I did have to adjust some things but with time I realized to see change I’d have to make changes. Whether it’s a small problem or big problem it matters, and never should it be pushed away, acknowledge it and begin the process of healing. “Recently I got a new dog and I consider him my friend, whenever we go on walks together, he surprisingly helps me calm down,” freshman Emily Henderson said. In times like these its best to try and keep your mind off things and just live your best life with friends and family. You could do simple things like go to the park with a group of friends or just one and have a picnic, grab or make some food and get yourself a blanket and take a trip to the park and enjoy nature. If you like being outside then other options could be camping, fishing, hiking, watching the sunset, swimming and much more. Scientist have shown that taking walks in the park or woods reduces anxiety, stress and even depression. But if you’re not much of an outdoor person, never worry, there’s also options out there for you. You could go to the movies and watch anything that interest you. Another fun indoor place would be sky zone, sweat some calories off while still having fun. Others could be bowling, eating out, parties, shopping at the mall, go to the gym etc. All these places will help you keep your mind off any stressors and keeps you occupied with friends. By also having time with your friends, it’ll give you time to talk about your problems and just let everything all out, communication Is key. They could give you suggestions on what to do and will overall just push you onto a better path. After all, that’s what friends are for, to improve your mood and make you feel happy. “On my worst days I always feel down, tired and with no energy, so I like washing my face to get a refreshed clean feeling” sophomore Erick Rodriguez said. I’ve noticed that pampering myself always makes me feel better, just the feeling of being refreshed and clean makes me feel more satisfied with myself and that could turn out to be the same for you. That could be something as simple as finding a skin care routine. Finding different products that clear your face and just simply wash away the stress is great. Different brand names that have worked for me are Cetaphil, Clean & Clear, Shea Moisture, Neutrogena, Biore and many others. These are all

non-expensive brands that work wonders. But if you’re more into and still want that same feeling, a recommendation could be doing your nails. Going out with a friend or just yourself to go get your nails done is a great idea. There are endless designs, endless colors and endless shapes/sizes you could do on nails. Another option could be your hair you could go shorter or maybe dye it a different color. To heal and move on from things you need change and yes, your hair counts! Search around to discover yourself and find a different side it’ll give you a new fresh look. Self-care is a great way to release stress which then prevents chronic stress from affecting your health. Not only that but from just treating yourself in this simple way it reminds you that you’re important and have needs just like others, so by pampering yourself it helps you inside and out. Sometimes having a lot of time on my hands makes me over think and I become anxious so to prevent that you could easily get involved in a sport. Not only will you be helping yourself out on your physical appearance, but you’d be meeting new people as well. You’ll be able to keep your mind off things and feel more confident of yourself by sweating off some calories which will lead you to be more fit. Some great options out there are volleyball, soccer, football, softball, basketball, track and many more. You could contact your counselor from school and find out how to get into these

sports. If your school doesn’t do sports never stress, there could be many teams or clubs that you could be able to join around your area. By being physically active it triggers your brain chemicals that make you feel more relaxed and happier. Like I mentioned this also keeps your mind off any daily stressors that you may have. So then by lowering your stress rate it stimulates production of “Endorphins”. Endorphins trigger positive feelings in your body which for example this could give you a more positive outlook on life. With a better outlook on life and just filling any room with positive vibes you will instantly begin to feel better about any issues going on. Overall surrounding yourself with positive people and positive vibes it lifts your spirit to do better and not be stuck in that place that you’re in currently. Remember that time is everything never try to rush yourself into feeling better or never try to fake things because we all go through times like these, its normal. You don’t need to be ok all the time and that’s ok because life isn’t perfect. But by finding healthy ways to better yourself you’re showing strength because not everybody can push themselves to want to do better. So, you’re already on the right path to bettering yourself by clicking and taking the time to read this. In conclusion remember your worth it and you are strong enough to overcome this.

How to deal with Anxiety story/ E. Butler
Anxiety is an unwanted emotion that takes form of unwanted feelings and fears. There are different types of anxiety including social anxiety. Anxiety is common. Sometimes people try to hide their anxiety, because they feel alone if they don’t know how to deal with it. Anxiety can affect anyone, even if it they don’t notice it. Anxiety could cause a person to be shy or uncomfortable while someone tries to talk to him or her. Q&A with Ms. Madsen, school counselor: Q: How old were you when you became counselor? A: I’ve studied about psychology. I don’t remember how old I was when I became counselor, but I do remember I’ve attended lots of classes. Q: What do you do when it comes to students with anxiety? A: I try my best at helping students with anxiety. I am doing my best I can to help them calm down. I make sure to help the students learn to calm themselves and go to class every time. Q: How do you ask the students properly about their anxiety? A: I always ask the students the right
questions about their anxiety and problems. I ask them if it is class or home life related. So, it would take time for the students to slowly open up about their feelings to me. Q: Do students have social or emotional anxiety? A: Both, but it was usually social anxiety. Students with social anxiety are struggling to go to class without being worried about something too much. If a student has panic or anxiety attack and teacher doesn’t know how to comfort the student. The teacher would send the student to my office or another counselor’s office. If students couldn’t try to calm themselves during class time, I or another counselor would give them a “Break” pass. The students with anxiety would use the “Break” pass to calm themselves for 5 or 10 minutes. Anxiety is more of a deep feeling than simple nervousness. Anxiety would be likely developed in middle and high school because stress or worry about grades could cause students to have anxieties. Students with anxiety would end up shutting their friends or families out of their lives sometimes, because they feel like people won’t understand them.
Facts about anxiety Anxiety can be genetic 50% of people who have anxiety suffer from depression. Bad events or memories can cause anxiety. Anxiety disorders are more common in America. PSTD would be found in soldiers, due to bad flashbacks of war.

Students can talk to trusted friends or counselors. If they aren’t ready to talk in public, they can have a private conversation with a family member. • Finding a new hobby won’t cure some anxieties sometimes, but it can help calm students who have free time. • Most students with anxiety can feel calm in a quiet or safe place. Uncertainty ?
?
story/R. Hayworth

Senior Mara Kinney, like most seniors at East High School, is planning to graduate in May. However, when it comes to the fall of 2020, Kinney doesn’t know what the future holds for her. “Welcome to chaos,” Kinney said. Throughout the first eight years of education, students get little choice over what they want to study. Even in high school, where students have more choice over what they want to do, they are still strongly encouraged or even forced to take English, math, science, and social studies classes. “I kinda know, not really what I wanna do, but I do know I want to go to college. I mean, I think I wanna go to college. If I don’t go to college that could be bad probably,” Kinney said. College is a common, yet expensive choice for graduating high school students, but it may not always be the best one. What if a student spends tens of thousands of dollars getting a degree, just to decide that the path they want to follow does not utilize that degree? Opinions, passions, and ambitions fade as quickly as they come up. This makes it stressful to choose one path, with the impression that you will be on it forever. However difficult it may seem, it is possible to change careers. The decision between being miserable and straying from the path you choose as a young adult is a big one. “The world does revolve around money, unfortunately, but you don’t want to be miserable every day,” English teacher Ms. Williamson said. Coming out of high school, Williamson did not know what she wanted to do. Coming out of college, she had yet to figure it out.

She worked a desk job she hated, and began to look around for a new calling. Teaching sparked her interest by chance, but to do so she had to go back to school for a teaching certificate. “I was frustrated with myself because I was seeing my friends come out of college with jobs and careers that they actually wanted to do. I didn’t have that, and I wanted to be that person who could make those decisions,” Williamson said. Making sure you know what to expect in a career is important to deciding if it is a good fit for you. If it doesn’t interest you, it isn’t likely to be a good fit. If you do find yourself on the wrong path, you can always find another one. “For students trying to figure out what they want to do, life is long. Even if you choose one thing, there is always time to change your mind,” Spanish teacher Mrs. Macdonald said. Macdonald changed her mind several times while still in college, from genetic engineering, to economics and international relations, and finally, teaching. It is okay to change your mind or be unsure while you are in high school, college, or even a first career that isn’t working out. “If you don’t know what you want to do, expand your horizons because you might find something out there, but that’s also privileged advice, because saying ‘go to college and take five classes in five different things that aren’t gonna count for anything’ is expensive” Macdonald said. Expanding your horizons does not always have to be in college. It could be something as simple as joining a new group, or volunteering, or making new friends. Trying new

things, whether that be in the form of expensive college classes or a new hobby, is expanding your horizons. There are some college options for expanding your horizons that cost less than others. Taking classes you’re interested in will cost less at a community college like DMACC, than they would at a private university like Drake. “East focuses on you getting what you need to graduate, not so much about after graduation,” Kinney said. With a graduation rate of hovering around 80% for the last ten years, it is encouraging that East works hard to give more students a diploma and a better chance for their future. However, significantly less go to college. While East High as a school may not have the resources to help students make plans for their futures, there are amazing teachers within the building who want to support students when it comes to college decisions. “I think it’s really cool asking people what their dream job is, because I get really in-

spired by hearing people be passionate about something. Hearing people’s stories on what burns their fires, it’s not even the question of what job do I wanna do, it’s the question of what’s gonna make me feel that passionate,” teacher Ms. Lee said. For her entire childhood, Lee was told by her parents that she was going to be a doctor. As a first generation American with immigrant parents, it was very important to her to make her parents happy, but the idea of being a doctor never felt right. On the first day of college she changed her major. Her parents did not find out until her junior year. “They were mad. It was bad. The whole extended family found out, and the whole time my parents had been bragging about how I was going to be a doctor. They said some hurtful things like ‘what a waste of potential’ or ‘you’re gonna be so hungry when you grow up because you’re not gonna make any money’ and ‘we can’t believe that you would waste all of this energy and time that’s not gonna help you build a career’” Lee said. Her parents’ disappointment about her career stemmed from wanting her to be
able to build a life for herself, and after she showed that she could do that, their relationship improved. Chances are, the people in your life don’t care what you do, as long as you’re happy and healthy. “Follow your heart, because where else are you gonna start. I have kids tell me all the time, ‘I have zero idea what I wanna do’ and my follow up question to that is always ‘what is your dream job?’ You gotta start there, because if that’s what your passionate about you gotta go for it,” Lee said. Ultimately, it comes down to you. You need to choose a path that will make you feel happy and fulfilled, and that might not be easy. Change is scary, but sometimes it is necessary. Is it worth following a path you are not passionate about to fulfill expectations placed on you by your family or society? Probably not. Do something you love, and find people who will support you doing it. Uncertainty can only rule your life if you let it.

the audience joins in or even calls out cheers. “I feel like the role of a cheerleader is to hype up the crowd and keep all the energy and spirit up,” Faith said. One thing cheerleaders do to help hype up the crowd is stunting. Stunting is where the cheerleaders get into groups of at least four with three bases and one flyer. In the base are two sides, one main and the secondary, and the back base. The bases work together to lift the flyer to a pyramid position. There are two ways Easts cheerleaders use to return their flyers to a standing position. To start is the pop-down which is where the bases basically do the same movements but in reverse. The other one is a cradle which the bases push the feet up and catch like a cradle. “We want to impress the crowd and get them pumped up,” junior, varsity cheerleader Aalyah Freeman said. Cheer is something that has been there for years and many join and love it. For some it is an escape to a world of smiles and support. “Do cheer it’s an amazing sport you will grow and love it more the longer you do it,” Faith said. story/C.Hexamer and A.Forget
