elcome back Scarlets! A new year means different rules, new policies, and new staff. Principal Steve Johns, decided to change block 9 to something that would be more rewarding to the students who worked hard and had a proficient reading

How do you feel about the new cell phone policy at East? Mrs.Fenstermann
“I love it because I was tired of arguing with students because I want them to pay attention to what I am saying. They could get hurt if they aren’t paying attention if they are “loling” and “haha” when I am giving safety instructions. I miss the juicy notes, they were good notes!”
Kayla Goff, 9 “I think we should be able to use our cell phones during our free time. I also think we should be allowed to use them for calculators and to look up things for work if needed.”
Drake Cam, 10
Mirce Rodriguez, 10
“It’s stupid because when people get their work done they should be able to listen to music.”
“I like it because you can still use it outside of classrooms.”

or 15 years the East baseball team had been absent from the state tournament. As the 2013 season rolled around, it quickly became apparent that the Scarlet baseball club was going to be something special. Over the summer, the group of 18 boys shattered school records, boasting 38 wins and only five losses. Snatching the CIML Metro Conference with ease was only a minor goal for the club. This team had their eyes set on a much bigger prize; getting back to the state tournament. The Scarlets would square off with Valley
for a trip to state, the same team who had ended the past two seasons for the Scarlets. The sticks came out hot in the big game, as East went on to defeat Valley 4-2 in the sub-state finals. The victory earned a trip to the state tournament at Principal Park. The Scarlets opened the tournament with a thriller against Davenport North. It took nine innings but a victory was earned 7-6 over the Wildcats. The win set a match up in the state semifinals with Johnston. Though the game seemed to be in the hands of the Scarlets, the Dragons stole the game

late, ending East’s run just short of a state title. The young team of stars was led by four All-State selections. Senior Robert Hansen was named to 2nd team honors, while Senior Malique Ziegler and Junior Chino Alcala were named to first team. Senior Colby Carmichael led the pack as one of the state’s top pitchers and claimed a spot on Iowa’s Elite All-State team. Though the title was not claimed this season, the Scarlets will return 15 of the 18 players to next year’s team, giving the school and even the state something to keep an eye out for.

yle Fedders has been working in schools for the last nine years. He is originally from Sheldon, Iowa but has been at East for the last three years. In his last few years he has been both a social studies teacher and a School Improvement Leader. Now to kick off the 2013-2014 school year he has taken on a role as the new Activities Director. Q: How does it feel to be the new Activities Director? A: It’s very exciting. there is never a dull day. Things never go according to plan, on an average day you could be dealing with five to ten different things at a time. Q: What made you want to become AD? A: I’ve always wanted to be an activities director. I’ve been involved in sports my whole life so I like that I still get to work with them. Q: What qualities do you have that you think will make you a successful athletic director? A: I think my three most helpful qualities would be my communication skills, I’m a straight shooter, and I have a sense of humor.
Q: Did you receive any inspirational words or advice from Rick Powell before he left? A: One thing he said that really stuck with me was “Don’t forget about you and your family.” Sometimes this job can be a handful so it’s important not to forget the things that matter. Q: What challenges do you face in this position? A: I’m experiencing a sharp learning curve. It can be a bit overwhelming at times so it’s nice to have a secretary (Ms. Smith) who’s been around for a while. Q: How do you deal with the pressures of this job? A: Prioritizing is helpful, you want everything to be important and you never
want to feel like you’re playing favorites. It also helps to have Kim Smith, because we work well together and in this position it is important to work like a well-oiled machine. Q: What are you hoping to improve? A: I have three main goals for the year. They are to decrease deficit in the budget, increase participants in all activities, and make our school spirit more thriving. Q: Any final comments? A: I would like to encourage everyone students and staff to show their scarlet pride by wearing black and red on Fridays.
