But new research shows that maybe the fires have been set intentionally. The Australian police have charged at least 24 people for intentionally starting the fires in the state of New South Wales, and another dozen are under investigation. ou walk into the Walker building after school, ready to begin your time at the new East High Boys & Girls Club. You put your backpack into a locker and scan your membership card at the door, where you are happily greeted by a Boys & Girls Club employee. You sit down with your friends and relax until 4 p.m. when the first session starts, and you are given four choices. After you finish the first session at 5:10, you get to eat the dinner provided at the café where you can relax and wait for the next session at 5:50. Which could include anything from a cooking class to a money management session. After an eventful day at the Boys & Girls club, you feel a
sense of ownership and community as you head home at 7 p.m. “I want them (students) to know that it is their club,” unit director Chris Noth said. The East High School Boys and Girls Club opened on Feb. 3 at the Walker Building on the East campus. This club is the first teen-only Boys and Girls Club to open in Iowa, by offering a lot of opportunities for club members. It includes a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lab, ESports stations, DJ booth, homework help, tutoring, and more. “A lot of our time is going to be focused on each kid and what they want and need after they graduate high school,” Program Specialist Ariel DuPey said. Many of the programs are meant to help students see a future out of high school, no matter what it will be. “We want everyone to graduate high school with a solid plan for what to do next, whether it is college or a career,” Noth said. According to bgcci.org, the purpose of the Boys & Girls Club is to “inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens,”. “It helped me so much having a different community that I could go to when I was in middle school, being able to have those mentors really helped me a lot,” East High Freshman Mackenzie Speck said. This club benefits students who may be having problems outside of the classroom or don’t feel safe going home. It gives students a lot of opportunities like belonging to a community at school and having a safe place to go after school instead of going out and getting in trouble. “I think that it will give a good opportunity for students to get help from someone who isn’t a teacher,” Teacher Kortny Williamson said. Students also benefit in the classroom, academic wise. Tutoring is going to be a regular session at the club because they know that students are in need of additional academic support. Students will also benefit from being shown that school and learning can be interesting through the S.T.E.A.M. lab. “Boys and Girls club is such an amazing time and I feel like having it in the high school is going to mean a lot to the kids,” Speck said. The Boys & Girls Club’s grand opening party was on Feb. 3rd from 3-7 p.m. All students who attend East were invited.

Cornavirus Spread with Racism Story/F.Centeno
It has been all over the internet, bringing a panic across social media platforms such as Facebook, Tik Tok, and Twitter. It’s been guided by false information and conspiracy theories causing hoaxes that leap from person to person like a virus itself. In the beginning of the year, the discovery of a new coronavirus caught the attention of many individuals not only fearing for their health but also making racist and insensitive jokes towards Asians. “In this society if there are problems, we’re not even coping with them. As a society we should cope and figure out to battle it together as one but no we just want to make fun of it. We want to joke and jab about real oppressive matters,” senior Sunya Hardi said. Coronavirus was discovered in the Photos/F.Centeno

1960’s, it’s a family of viruses that cause deadly diseases in mammals and birds. The most dangerous kinds are SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome). Coronaviruses are zoonotic which means they are transmitted between animals and humans. SARS are transmitted from cats to humans and MERS are transmitted from camels to humans. These two kinds can cause death to humans. 2019-nCoV or 2019 Novel Coronavirus, is a virus that causes inflation in your nose, sinuses or upper throat. It was first detected in Wuhan, China and early on, an outbreak of patients reportedly had a link to a seafood and animal market. It was suggesting an animal-to-person spread, especially to those that either worked or shopped in a Huanan market. This virus causes pneumonia. Those who are affected can experience fever, coughs, and breathing failure. In severe cases, it can cause organ failure as well. “The common flu is more dangerous than the coronavirus, you should not be scared,” Hardi said. According to cnn.com, novel coronavirus has killed more than 630 people, the ma-

jority in China but globally it has infected over 31,400 people across 25 countries and territories. On Jan.30, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization announced that the outbreak is a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). On Jan 31, the Health and Human Services claimed public health emergency to aid the United States’ healthcare community. According to cdc.gov, the President of the United States signed a presidential Proclamation on Suspicion of Entry as Immigrants and Non immigrants of Persons who Pose a Risk of Transmitting 2019 Novel Coronavirus. “I have an international friend who is from China and I know it affects him, he will not be able to travel back home anytime soon, maybe not even during summer break,” East Alumni Nawal Rai said. According to cdc.gov, Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington and Wisconsin have confirmed 2019-nCoV cases. Americans that are coming from China to the United States are being medically checked for symptoms. “Many people have the misconception that all Asians are Chinese. They believe that anyone who looked Asian has the coronavirus, therefore people are having a fear of catching the disease from us even if we don’t have it,” junior William Chhim said. Two individuals in Iowa are being tested for novel coronavirus. Both have returned from China. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are currently waiting for the results whether Iowa tests positive for coronavirus. According to kcci. com, State Medical Director and epidemiologist Dr. Caitilan Pedati said that Iowa has a low risk of the spread of coronavirus. Even though Iowa is seen as a low risk, there still has been a problem with racist jokes and comments towards the Asian community for entertainment purposes. Many comments have been made such as ‘Don’t buy anything from China because you might get the virus’, to even ‘China needs to stop eating everything that moves’. These comments are not just a harmless joke
The Coronavirus causes misconceptions of the Asian community but there are people who actually believe them and have committed hate crimes towards Asians. “The memes that are made because of coronavirus (are) not acceptable because it is affecting people in a negative way. It’s not funny to laugh at something that is taking people’s lives. Being racist does not make anyone great,” Rai said. One example, is how in New York during early February a woman wearing a face mask covering her mouth, was attacked at a Chinatown subway station after being called a ‘diseased b****’. A video was released on Twitter of her being kicked and punched while witnesses stood and watched. Another example that has happened, is on Jan. 28, a Chinese man who suffered a heart attack in Sydney was left to die because bystanders were too scared to give him CPR, worrying if he had coronavirus. “Our country was founded through destroying others and it’s really sad people these days still think it’s okay to treat a human like that. It proves that racism and discrimination towards minorities will never end in this country and we as a new generation and young people need to stand up against it instead of making insensitive memes and laughing at it,” Rai said. One student even from East High School has faced this discrimination. She was with a group of friends at Target, all three are Asian, and two Caucasian adults saw them and immediately pulled up their shirts over their mouths when they passed them. “Legitimate hate crimes against not only people of Chinese descent but Asian people because non-Asians don’t care about ethnicity division within the Asian diaspora,” Hardi said. This is not the first time that society has made jokes about a serious deadly virus. In 2014, people were making many jokes about the spread of Ebola. “People are being xenophobic towards Asian communities now like they were being xenophobic towards African Americans back then. It’s how we are and there isn’t much we can do to change it, “ Chhim said.
Although some argue that these types of jokes are a form of dark humor, however it is not right for people to be laughing and making memes about a situation that has killed hundreds of lives. “ I think people are going to make memes and jokes about serious topics no matter what because that is the society we live in today,” Chhim said . Authorities recommend avoiding the disease by regularly washing your hands and covering your mouth and nose while sneezing and coughing. Also, to thoroughly cook your meat, eggs and to avoid close contact with anyone showing a respiratory illness. The bottom line is that not all Asians or specifically Chinese people have the disease. Making memes to most people are both fun and entertaining but by making fun of a serious deadly disease that has killed many people can be seen as disrespectful and disgraceful. “This world has lost empathy for other people. We don’t have empathy towards people that don’t look like us and that don’t live in the same place as us,” Hardi said.

he Iowa Caucus is the first primary to happen in the nation. It is the first time the candidates know where they are in their campaign and where they will end up in the rest of the polls. Many people participated in the Iowa Caucus, such as seniors who are 18 or will be 18 by November had the chance to go to their first caucus. With it being the first caucus they got to be involved with, the seniors who went were very excited, and they knew how important it is. “I think it is very important to vote in every election if you are able to vote. There are so many people who can’t vote for one reason or another and by not caucusing or voting you are throwing away an opportunity that not everyone has and that’s on privilege,” senior Caroly Coronado said. Caucusing is more important than what most people think. The Iowa Caucus is the first and maybe only time you can vote for the candidate you want. Many people recommend you prepare before you go to the caucuses. Government classes at East were doing mock caucuses to help students before they went to the real thing. “I definitely went in prepared because of all the mock caucuses that we did in government class. So I was ready for all the steps that went into caucusing,” senior Kade Dolphin said. Going with a parent who is involved in politices will help you feel more comfortable while at your first caucus.

“I was prepared for the caucuses. I feel like it’s mostly because I went with my mom in the last election so I knew kind of how things go. Also, I knew how everything goes, also I knew who I was going for so I was prepared,” senior Kaytlyn Andrews said. Going into the caucus knowing who you are going for will make your experience stress free. “At first the experience was a little weird, but after about 15 minutes, the excitement in the air really made it fun,” Dolphin said. Many seniors loved the Iowa Caucus and are very happy they went. “Even though it was a long night it was very important and I’m very happy I experienced it,” senior Jaidyn Chasar said. Being around a group of people who care about your views and have the same views that you do will make you feel more comfortable at your caucus site. “I saw a community that cared about each other,” Coronado said. This won’t be the last caucus they will be going to. They all plan on going to other caucuses in the future. “It allows me to see how other people in my community think while giving me the chance to voice my own opinion,” Dolphin said. This years Caucus had many issues but after a couple days the winner was annouced. It was a close call but Pete Buttigieg beat Bernie Sanders by two votes.

Most of these fires have taken place on the East coast of Australia causing it to spread around the country and at the moment has spread to the nation’s capital, Canberra. Tori Clarke is an Australian YouTuber who witnessed the fire firsthand and happened to record the fire and upload her experience for the internet to see the reality of how bad the fire really is. “The atmosphere was so strange that morning, I’ve never felt anything like it before. In hindsight it was very much the calm before the storm. When I woke up that morning, there was a slight breeze which smelled like smoke, it was a very hot morning. Ash and burned leaves were falling from the sky. It
was also very quiet; I don’t recall hearing many birds that morning,” Clarke said. The fire has forced several thousand Australians to evacuate their homes, taking only their necessities, and hoping their homes would make it through the blaze. “The hardest part of that day was finding the physical strength to leave the house; it makes me tear up just thinking back at that moment! We stood in the house, the smoke alarm by the front door wouldn’t stop beeping, the hot wind was ferocious outside, it was raining fire and spot fires had started on our own front lawn,” Clarke said. Humans aren’t the only ones who are left without a home. Several species of wildlife have had their homes destroyed by the fires with nowhere to go. Wildlife shelters are crowded with wounded and homeless animals. The fire has taken the lives of many animals that were found only in Australia or that were threatened or close to extinction. Firefighters, along with saving people, are also helping to save animals as well. A student worried about the wildlife is Trang Luong, a senior at East. “I am very worried about the animals. A lot of animals have or are going extinct within the last 50 years or so. Along with that, it must be scary for the animals knowing they’re in danger and can’t do much about it,” Luong said. It is important to help Australia in this moment and the best way to do that is to learn about the fire and donate. A place you can donate to is Australia’s Red Cross which have helped people evacuate and has recovery centers for them. Another place you can donate to if you want to help the wildlife is to WIRES, they’re a wildlife rescue nonprofit organization that is helping to rescue and to care for thousands of sick and injured animals. “We need to have area to protect them, sanctuary’s spots and zoo’s,” Long said. Also you can donate to the Rural Fire Brigades Association, that help support firefighters in Queensland, Australia. It’s important to help Australia in this time of need as this fire has been going on for months and seems like it will continue for a few more rough months.

How to do a basic make up look Story/ E.Gonzalez Page Editor/E.Gonzalez
Learn some basic tips on a quick makeup look
First things first, you have to start by finding what best fits your skin! You have to find the right products for your skin since everyone has different types of skin, some people have oily skin and some have really dry skin. There are many different types of foundations like matte and liquid foundations, that are specifically made for your skin type. Makeup can be easier than you think. Watching Youtube makeup tutorials can really be helpful.
1.
Get your face ready First step is to wash your face, then you have to moisturize your face and apply primer so that the face won’t look too cakey! “The most important step in a makeup routine is skin care before and after the makeup. Your makeup won’t look as nice if you don’t take care of your skin”, Senior Caroly Coronado said.
2.
The brows With the brows you want to start by brushing them. An angled brush works best when filling them in. When filling the brows in you want to start with small strokes and not too harsh. The best way to start is with the middle of your eyebrow and work yourself down. First you want to draw a line where your natural hair grows and fill in the back of it. After, with the product left over on the brush or a lighter shade, fill in the front of the eyebrow. Remember not to over shade the front or make them look squared. After you have shaded your eyebrows you can clean and conceal the brows by getting concealer and a flat brush. Clean them underneath and above the brow with the concealer and blend it out. (This step is optional)
Photos/A.Solis-Palos
3.
Find the right products for your skin You have to find the foundation and concealer that fits your skin tone best. To find the right foundation color you have to find the color that fits your neck. (Concealer should not be more than two shades lighter). Apply the foundation all over your face and blend it out. Then, you apply the concealer under your eyes to cover any dark areas and blend it out.
4. Contouring vs. bronzing Contouring is to show the structure of your face and show shadows to make the face look slimmer. For a more natural look you want to bronze. Bronzing is for a more glowy look and adds warmth to the face. You bronze on the outer sides of your forehead along the hairline and cheekbones. Then you can add blush on your cheeks.
5.
Set your face So what does it mean to set your face? Setting your face is when you apply powder to your face with a small brush so your makeup stays in place and you don't get any cracks throughout the day. There is another similar thing called baking. Baking is when you use a larger amount of setting powder to the face.
The Eyes
Before applying any eyeshadow you want to prime the eyes. Priming the eyes is when you add eyeshadow primer as a base and to help the eyeshadow stay on longer. You can also prime the eyes with concealer and blend it out with a beauty blender or brush. For a simple look you don't always have to do your eyeshadow. For beginners you might want to start with soft and natural colors and not bright colors. “To get the best results, start with little product and build your way to the color that you want. Starting with too much color can be a mess.”, Senior Sky Archer said. For a more simple look you can just set the concealer with setting powder and add a bit of highlighter in the inner corner of your eye and add some mascara and lashes of your choice.
Finally, mostly everyone’s favorite part, highlighter! You can add highlighter to create the illusion of brightness to your face. A liquid highlighter is best for dry skin and power highlighter works better for oily skin. For a more glow, wet your brush with setting spray before applying highlighter. “A step I can’t skip is doing my eyebrows and highlighter”, Coronado said. The last step of any makeup look should be adding setting or finishing spray. So your makeup can stay on and still look fresh throughout your day.

P OW E R IN THE PAC K The growing issue of women
Story/ M. Ochoa Page Editor/ M. Ochoa
criticzing other women As a female in high school, it is hard to feel like you belong in a group. There are a variety of stores to shop for the latest fashion, and so many trends to keep up with. Baylee Brafford is one of the females at East High. One day, she decides to go to school, even though she is not feeling the best. She dresses in sweatpants and a sweatshirt hoping to have an easy, comfy school day. Fortunately, all goes well. The next day, however, she decides to dress up and look good, for herself and no one else. Unfortunately, a friend, who is also a female, makes the comment, “Wow, Baylee, you actually look good today.” “It made me feel really bad about myself, especially because it was someone I trusted and other girls bringing other girls down isn’t okay, but especially not your friend bringing you down,” Brafford said. Women are often put down by ignorant and hateful comments. These comments can range anywhere from the way their bodies look, the clothes they are wearing, their actions, and even whether they wear makeup or prefer to have a natural face. Haters will do anything to bring a woman’s confidence level down. Unfortunately, men are not the only ones at fault. A continuous problem among women is the cruel way they treat each other. “I don’t understand why women always hate other women by their appearances instead of just lifting them up,” Brafford said. Women go through many battles that men do not experience, ranging from the aches and pain of periods, to giving birth, to the unpredictable emotional roller coasters that come with them. Over the years, drama among women has become more normalized by society. Not only face to face, but through social media

he clock ticks. A room of high school students in complete silence, practically a new universe. Pencils scratch on test booklets on plastic tables arranged in endless rows. For some students the time is going as fast as it is slow. The test drags on, while they struggle to find focus. Their eyes dart around the room, looking for something to draw them in, and hold their minds captive for awhile. This is a reality of standardized testing for students who struggle with ADHD. “I get really antsy during long tests. I’ll fiddle with pencils. I’ll chew the pencil knub. I’ll start shaking my legs so hard my entire body vibrates.Usually it’s just movement, but there are times I just can’t focus. The words start swimming, and I need to do something else,” junior Jeremiah Wheeler said. ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is often characterized by untamable energy, difficulty following directions, constant figeting, or general forgetfulness. Other lesser known effects can be increased risk of additional mood disorders and executive dysfuntion. “For a lot of students with ADHD and other learning disabilities, I think the fact that they have to remember on their own can make testing so much more stressful, so they only remember the stress and not the actual things they were suppose to remember,” Wheeler said.

The brains of people with ADHD develop at a different rate and in different ways than a normal brain does. This results in impaired activity of four areas in the brain, with the largest effects being shorter attention span, executive dyfunction, and organization. “ADHD shows symptoms related to attention, and obviously this could affect somebody, especially if they are doing a timed test, so they might want to find something we call a power test where they can do all the problems right it just takes them a little longer, versus having only x minutes to do the test,” psychology teacher Brian Koch said. People have many different ways of coping with ADHD. Some have learned how to control the effects. Others work to hide their symptoms and try to avoid the stereotypes of a struggling student. During testing this could include looking at the clock, getting a drink, or reviewing past questions to regain focus. “I’ve gotten good with both working with the things that I do to help fix it and working through it in general. Usually my hyperactivity is down to a minimum during school time and I can focus myself and pay attention, but as soon as I get home there’s so many things to distract me and there’s a lack of executive control. I’ll be sitting in my chair and I’ll

think to myself ‘I need to do homework.’ ‘I want to do homework.’ There is a desire to do my homework and I cannot,” Wheeler said. With ADHD, stigma has decreased as more information about it has become available. Now, there are prescriptions to help people control their symptoms, and adults have found ways to better support students who struggle with it. Some students are very open about their struggles, like Wheeler. “I think when my parents were in school, there would have been stigma. With me being better able to conceal it and people just being more knowledgable in general, most people understand what ADHD is and they know if I’m fidgeting around, it’s just me,” Wheeler said. When it comes to testing, it can
D H be hard to admit struggles. Students who struggle with ADHD might not want to admit that they feel limited by their diagnosis. These students should know that they can ask for help. ADHD might not want to admit that they feel limited by their diagnosis. These students should know that they can ask for help. “Maybe students don’t know extra support is available to them. There could be some pride, like, they’re high schoolers. You know the teenage mantra of ‘I don’t need support’ feeling, but I think usually it just comes from a lack of knwing what supports could be there and how to ask for them appropriately. Just to clarify, just because a student asks, doesn’t mean they’re going to get it. There has to be data that supports that they need it,”
Vice Principal Jill Versteeg said. Other learning disabilities may be harder for people to understand or talk about. Dyslexia can make it hard to read and interpret the letters being seen. Dysgraphia affects motor skills, most obviously seen in poor handwriting. Auditory processing disorder affects a student’s ability to distinguish between different sounds and block out background noise. When it comes to standardized testing, students who want extra help can request to receive accommodations. “Students who have identified disabilities are able to submit a request [for accommodation] through the counselor, and then ACT, because it’s a separate entity from the school, makes the decision if it will happen. The majority of the time I would say they provide the accommodation to the student and it could be extended time, frequent breaks, a smaller setting, like taking a test in a conference room or something. The same things applies with AP testing. We submit those tests to the College Board, and they tell us if they accept or deny it,” Versteeg said. In recent years, more standardized testing has moved to online. Soon, ACT will offer retakes for single sections, rather than sitting down for all four sections at once. It is becoming more evident that standardized test scores are not an efficient way to measure a student’s intelligence, and it is difficult for testing circumstances to be made equal for everyone.

Misconceptions of therapy
Everyone’s heard it. ‘She’s crazy.’ ‘Learn to deal with your own problems.’ ‘He’s weak.’ These are some misconceptions about people who go to therapy. People go to therapy for many reasons, validation, professional advice, personal growth, and even just space to feel and process. Many high school students struggle with mental health but are hesitant to reach out for help due to distrust, fear, and embarrassment for being perceived as not normal. It is important for mental health professionals to know the signs of someone who may need help. “Isolation or withdrawing from friends or activities that they used to care about. Lack of motivation to get up and do things they used to enjoy. Starting to act out of character. These can be a tell-tale sign that they may need to talk,” East High therapist Taylor Ash said. As a school therapist, Ash is well rehearsed in finding those students who are struggling with issues inside but don’t have the resources to express them. Another reason that one may not want to reach out is trust issues. They may not be sure that what they are saying will not be shared with outside sources. But, doctor-patient confidentiality is always at work. “I think that having a patient-therapist relationship is the most important thing. There is confidentiality behind therapy and what is said in here, stays in here, unless it is a safety concern or is under mandatory reporting laws,” Ash said. It is important for those going to therapy to understand that their therapist is there to listen and help work through problems, not to gossip. Doctor-patient confidentiality means that what is shared between a doctor and patient cannot be shared with anyone else without consent from the patient. The only time a doctor may share information is if someone is going to be harmed.

“I don’t think I can tell when a student is struggling with mental health necessarily,” East High teacher Lauren Barry said. Being a high schooler and struggling with mental health can be dangerous. Many students feel that they may be outcasted if they see a therapist. It’s important to know that not all high school students think this way. “Stereotypes I’ve heard is that they’re crazy and that they need a lot of help,” senior Ashley Luvan said. Many students believe these stereotypes and cast out those who are brave enough to ask for help. As a student, Luvan hears these misconceptions almost daily from fellow classmates. But she knows that there are valid reasons someone may go to therapy. “I think people go to therapy to change their mindset and their mentality to a better state. I think that it (therapy) is beneficial for a lot of people,” Luvan said. There is a variety of reasons one may want to talk and get professional advice. Many therapists like Ash know that when they are speaking to a student, their job is to help them realize, accept, and process. “I see a variety of symptoms. Anything from a trauma background, physical or sexual abuse, neglect, parents or guardians with substance abuse issues. And then there’s also depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, suicidal idealization,” Ash said. Many educators wish they had all the resources to help their students live easier and happier lives. Unfortunately, they cannot hold all the answers. But those struggling should know that teachers, parents, classmates, and friends want to help and are there for support. No matter the reason.

Dear America: Papers or not, I am human Undocumented students and teachers at East High speak on their experiences in america
Photo Illustration/J.Martinez-Aviles Page editor/J.Martinez-Aviles Story / J.Martinez-Aviles 11.1 million people are undocumented immigrants living in the United States. 4.4 million of those undocumented immigrants are students, all under the age of 25. To understand what undocumented students and teachers are going through, you must put yourself in their shoes. The majority of undocumented students and teachers in the U.S. struggle to thrive in today’s society. A difference in opportunities include not being able to get a work or driver’s permit, buy a house, or even get scholarships to help pay for college. Being an undocumented student in the U.S. can be very stressful. They face barriers for being ‘illegal’, whereas their peers who were born in the U.S. have unlimited opportunity. “They expect us to be really good kids, because if we are not, they assume that we are taking advantage of the opportunity that our parents gave us. I wanted to get my driver’s license, I couldn’t. I wanted to get my worker’s permit, I couldn’t. I wanted to get certain programs and scholarships, I couldn’t. I feel like an outcast,” an anonymous undocumented student said. Students who are in the U.S. ‘illegally’ struggle with the constant back lash of people who feel negatively about undocumented people in the United States. However, statistics show that undocumented students are usually higher achieving and more successful than the average student. According to the University of California’s Center for Labor and Education Research, many undocumented students are high performers. While being undocumented, students still manage to be athletes, honor students and leaders in their schools and communities. “I would love to become a pediatrician or a lawyer. It angers me how so many students don’t take advantage of the opportunities that they have. While I am over here working my butt off as an A student, I could end up at the same level as a student with all Cs. Luckily, I have a refuge, and that’s God, who helps me understand everything is in control,” an anonymous undocumented student said. Students who have an undocumented status go through the worries of not knowing what to do in the future. With no help on where to go or what to do, students are left in a hole, not knowing how to climb up. Educational Talent Search, or ETS for short, is a federally funded program that helps high school students in their search for post-secondary education. ETS, Science Bound, Upward Bound and excursions to different states for internship experiences are denied to undocumented students due to students not having a passport or a Social Security number. This can make the student feel sad, mad, and even unhopeful. Even if the student is a hard worker, they cannot make a living in this country if they do not have legal documents, proving that they can legally work. According to the Department of Education, less than 10 percent of undocumented students that graduate high school pursue a higher education. “I have tried to enter into many programs and activities, but not having papers or a Social Security has been an obstacle. For a while, I always thought that I could never go to college or go out of state...But I found out that if I do not get married and obtain papers through my wife, I cannot legally be paid to work in this country, even though I have the degree...All of my hard work would be for nothing,” an anonymous undocumented student said. While being an undocumented student in America is difficult, being an immigrant teacher trying to make a living for themselves and their family comes with its difficulties and trials as well. According to an article written by the National Immigration Forum, 9,000 teachers across the United States are protected by DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This organization protects immigrants who came to America at an early age and helps them obtain citizenship. However, it does not only help children and teenagers. Adults are supported as well. “It can be an obstacle as far as advancing in my career. There are certain jobs that require you to be a citizen in order to qualify. Even though you have the skills needed and experience, the fact that you are not a citizen just stops you,” an immigrant DMPS educator said. This East High staff member goes on to explain the lack of compassion for undocumented people in today’s American society. “I don’t think people understand what it means to be undocumented. Weather they are students, teachers, or any other person, we can’t just go and apply and get a Social Security number. I have gotten

those comments before, but the reality is that there is a waiting list of 15, 20 years or so. It is just a lack of understanding,” an immigrant DMPS educator said. There is a rhetoric that implies that immigrants are stealing jobs from American workers. The reality is that most of these jobs were never performed by Americans in the first place. Blue collar jobs are those of construction and craft, usually given to people that must get their hands dirty. According to The Brookings Institution, immigrants have boosted economic growth in the U.S. by having occupations such as farming to janitorial services. “I feel like so many people assume that since we are here, we are stealing jobs...Even facts and statistics show that immigrants gain employment on jobs that are not usually taken by citizens. People get jealous because we are making a living, but this also shows them that we can make a living in this country as well,” an immigrant DMPS educator said. Being undocumented can motivate one to reach for the stars as if there are no borders. While there are people who pity themselves due to not having documentation, there are those who do not let their status stop them from achieving greatness and making their parents, friends and family proud. “You learn to surf the waves. The fact that you don’t have a piece of paper with a nine-digit number doesn’t mean that don’t have goals, ambitions or dreams. We are still individuals that want to be successful and do great things. But it is very frustrating to see that you want to do great things, y tienes ganas, but there is just this thing, stopping you from doing that,” an immigrant DMPS educator said.
Most find it very comforting to know that undocumented individuals have each other’s back. The majority agree that whatever happens in the future will not determine nor destroy Latino heritage. “Don’t give up. There is going to be a lot of negativity around you. There are going to be times that you want to give up, but just because it is harder for us, doesn’t mean that it is impossible. It will just take us a little longer, but it all talks about how persistent we are. Tenemos mucha perseverancia, y tenemos muchas ganas. Creo que una persona que logra sus metas, al pesar de tener tantas dificultades va disfrutar el doble cuando llege a su destino,” an immigrant DMPS educator said. This immigrant DMPS educator gives a message and piece of advice to other teachers and staff who deal with and associate with undocumented students. “They are human, just like you. Stay informed. Know how to talk to someone who is in a difficult situation. If you don’t know anything, and all you want to do is support your students, the best you can do is educate yourself. Ask in your network, ask professionals about how to help your students. For example, if you don’t know whether a student can attend college if they don’t have a Social Security, then go ask, so you can talk to your kids. Guide them and try to give them the help and support they need. Be there and listen to them,” an immigrant DMPS educator said. Most undocumented students came to America at an early age, with no decision to stay or go from their home country. They eventually learned fluent English, achieved amazing grades, but have gotten shot down because of their roots. They had no choice as an unaware child. They struggle to see fault in making a path in the world they were put in “I would invite anyone whoever reads, to try and be respectful of other’s opinions and try to learn from others. Free from darkness A look into the grieving process.
Story/A.Makier
Page editor/A.Makier
When a loved one dies, those left to mourn, or survivors, often find themselves entangled in a complex web of emotions and reactions. The death of a loved one can be an overwhelming, frightening and painful experience. Many people can change physically, mentally, and socially as a result of losing someone. Dealing with death, particularly the loss of someone close to you, is one of the most stressful and painful experiences we can go through. Your loss may have been sudden or after many months of illness, but whatever the circumstances are, it will take time to regain your strength. There may be times when you find it difficult to believe, you feel a sense of devastation, numbness of your body, mind and soul may feel exhausted in a need for a break and some rest. In this difficulty, it is important to understand your emotions, take care of yourself, open and seek support from family, friends and professionals. While it is important to understand, everyone grieves differently and it does take time there are healthy steps, we can take in order to regain our strength in the process of our healing. Aftermath of losing someone “It affected me very emotionally, some days I don’t want to get out of bed because I felt that there wasn’t a point,” sophomore Remmi Dyer said. but the best words are shock and disbelief, “counselor Mike Freund said. According to Psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, there are five stages of grief. Denial and isolation: Feeling like ‘this can’t be happening’ or numbness, is often an initial reaction and defense mechanism to help us deal, survive, and cope with the immediate shock of the loss. Anger: We can feel anger towards the person who died for leaving us, the treating doctors for not being able to save or cure them, family, friends, and even God. Also, in our society, anger is often shunned, and we strive to suppress it, or we feel guilty about it.
“You aren’t the only one going through it.” Bargaining: In some instances, this may begin before the loss of a loved one. Bargaining is often with a higher power and filled with ‘what if I…?’ in exchange for either healing a dying person, bringing the loved one back from death, or easing our grief. Depression: Intense feelings of sadness and emptiness set in when we begin to un-

derstand the loss. It is a natural response and a necessary step to healing. Acceptance: We are accepting the reality that our loved one is physically gone. Many mistakes this as being ‘cured,’ ‘OK,’ or ‘alright’ with the loss. Instead, we have learned to live in a world where our loved one is missing. Positive ways to cope There are many steps in a grieving process but, acknowledging your pain is the first. Accept that grief can trigger many different and unexpected emotions, understand that your grieving process will be unique to you. Seek out face to face support with people who care about you. Lastly support yourself emotionally by taking care of yourself physically. “I got together with mutual friends of my friend, we told good stories about him and it made us laugh,” Freund said. Being around people will help you. “I spent a lot of time with family and friends,” Dyer said. Time with family helps. “When I was alone, I listened to music a lot and did a lot of physical activity, it took the negative energy out,” Freund said. The grieving process takes time, healing happens gradually. Some people start to feel better in weeks or months, while for others it takes years. Whatever your grief experience is, it’s important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold.

IIMF & NAACP
TWO ORGANIZATIONS TWO OPPURTUNITIES ONE GOAL
Story/ N.Gully Page editor/ N. Gully Photos/ N.Gully
African American boys and girls are turning down the life they so desperately wanted after high school, because they can’t afford the outrageous costs of college. They need support from teachers and peers to help them on the road to success. There are many youth groups outside of school who focus on helping young black students prepare for college and strengthen their minds. Here are two local youth groups that provide the support that students of color need to succeed in high school and beyond.
IIMF: Investing In My Future The Investing in My Future organization is based in Des Moines and is also known as IIMF Inc. Their main focus is preparing young African American youth in high school for a successful college career. It is the perfect opportunity for high school students of color to become a part of something that will prepare them for a better future. IIMF not only prepares high school students for college, but they also prepare middle schoolers for high school. IIMF uses their weekly workshops as a way to prep the high school students. Many of these workshops consist of ACT prep, resume writing, essay writing, and STEAM workshops. “All students should be exposed to IIMF because it allows them to educate themselves on the college process especially if they’re a firstgeneration college student. It also allows them the opportunity to get the real college experience,” college student Cassandra Bragg said. IIMF does more than just workshops. They also take the students who are part of the organization on local college tours every few months and every spring break. They go to a different state and visit surrounding Historically Black Colleges and Universities. “We visited many colleges in Iowa, but I think my favorites were the ones we visited out of state like Xavier University, Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina Central University and Tuskegee University,” Bragg said.
NAACP: National Association for
the Adavancement of Colored People
While IIMF focuses on getting the students prepared for a successful college career, the Des Moines branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also known as the NAACP Youth Council, focuses on educating colored youth about their five game changers. The game changers they focus on is Health, Economic Sustainability, Criminal Justice, Education, and Civic Engagement. They want youth to be more educated about people of color and the issues that affect them. “I believe young African Americans can learn most importantly history of their history that isn’t taught in school. That there were other great leaders in the civil rights movement besides Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. It will also want to make some of our students of color want to dive deeper into their history,” Youth Council State Representative Kenyada Coney said. IIMF and the NAACP Youth Council both focus on different aspects when preparing people of color for life outside of high school, but they both want the same thing. They both want to see more people of color represented in college and in the workforce. They want more colored faces in schools, in office, as lawyers, and as doctors and nurses. They want black people to rise.

Sisters for Success(S4S) is a club that was formed 21 years ago by Ruth Ann Gaines, a former East High School teacher, and along with other African American women. According to McCombs Middle School, the club supports students from diverse cultural backgrounds who are willing to strive for positive self-development and leadership in their communities. The girls join the club in middle school, which supports them through high school, up until they graduate. It also helps the girls prepare for college and makes sure they have a path for their careers. Why S4S should be offered at all DMPS S4S is sponsored by DMPS. Students need this club provided to them throughout junior high until they graduate. “I think it’s very important that it’s incorporated in middle and high school. We should be taught the things we learn in S4S at a younger age because we have more time to allow it to shape and mature us before we really start to settle into who we are as people,” sophomore Lyric Sellers said. Every club at East should be paid attention to especially clubs that represents such a large majority of students. “Although I’m graduating this year, I hope to see it back in the future. I’m not surprised because it wasn’t taken seriously and I’m not saying by students but by staff and the school. It should be advertised and encouraged. I feel like clubs should be advertised just as big as sports are,” senior Damaris Nelson. East is lucky to have S4S as a club for their students but what about the other schools? All girls of color that attend DMPS schools should have the opportunity to join the club because it provides them a foundation and creates positivity for the girls to look up to. “We live in a world that speaks negatively about women all the time so having a group of girls who you can lean on is necessary for a healthy self-esteem. All women should treat each other like sisters and S4S lays out the foundations for healthy friendships,” Hiatt Student Engagement Coordinator Kayla O'Connor said. Importance of S4S for girls of color “It was a way for the African American kids to all come together and discuss about programs to sign up for. We also toured colleges, wrote essays and talked about scholarship
Sisters for success is a club at East High School that provides many opportunities for girls of color
opportunities,” sophomore Shukri Abdirahman said. The club not only helps with supporting the students with college, but it also gives young women a voice to make an impact on the world. “As students grow older, they need to learn new things about how to excel in these areas of their life. It is also a good way for students to build a positive sisterhood to build each other up and be more connected with other strong women in their school,” East high school coordinator Antonia Valadez said. Working well and communicating with people is a big way of how our society works, so it’s important to have those life skills set. “In middle school I was voted president of Sisters 4 Success after being the new girl at only my second meeting. From there on out, I carried that leadership role and ambiance into every room I walk into. I am not the spokesperson for black women. No one is, nor can be. But I am confident that I do my part each and every day, to make people realize how dope black women really are,” Sellers said. The students who join the club have a sort of pride because they are with people just like them and they can all work together to help their communities. How does not having a club like S4S at their school impact students of color? It does not only affect students at East High School, but also young women of color at all DMPS schools are affected. According to Youth Mentor, there are 16 million students who are growing up without a mentor. That’s one out of every three young people who, outside of their home do not have a trusted adult or someone to give them guidance. For a while East didn’t have the club at their school, and it made students confused. “I was sad it wasn’t at East anymore. I'm sad because it is such a wonderful organization and what better place than East, where we have hundreds of colored girls,” Nelson said. East is known as second most diverse school in the DMPS district, which is a better place to keep the club. “I think it is weird that we don’t have it at East, but some other schools had it. I don’t really see those girls anymore and this club was a way for us to meet and discuss,” Abdirahman said. This club has much to offer from education and to helping the girls in the real world. It is a foundation and opportunity that young women of color should have the choice to join. Clubs like sisters for success are always booming and growing and it gives the girls essential tool which are need when you are a colored women growing up in America.

“Sewing is a ‘hook’. Sometimes students were not successful in core classes but were very successful in sewing. Often, when a student is successful in one class, their other classes will improve too,” Hebert said. Students and teachers want sewing back at East. Sewing is at risk for becoming extinct and future generations will have no idea sewing was a class.

took sewing felt the same way. “I was a part of sewing last year when I lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was really fun, and I got to meet a lot of new people,” senior Ashley Khaoon-Guerra Mrs. Huss-Steils was the former sewing teacher who also taught sewing in Texas. The school she taught at took the sewing program out. So, when the position for a new sewing teacher came up, she was excited to move to Iowa and work at East. It had been nine years and she was ready to teach again and see students discover their creativity. She was affected by this change the most. Sewing was one of her favorite classes she taught. She knew once it left it would be hard to get back. “Like everything else in this world, when things start dying out, you don’t get them to come back. I hated to see sewing leave because I know it would be hard to bring it back,” Huss-Steils said. Students agreed sewing was an easy class. They were surprised that they could create cool pieces, that they never thought they could until they tried. Unlike English, science, history, and math, you don’t have to memorize specific skills to pass. You learn how to do it, then you create it how you want it to be. That’s what many students enjoyed. “I think the strongest skill that sewing teaches is creativity. No matter what project students make, they must plan and design. This is a skill that is very valuable, no matter what students choose as a career choice,” Hebert said. Teachers noticed that some student’s other grades were improving as well because they were successful in sewing class.

The Truth behind Human Trafficking Unspoken truth
$150 billion in annual profits, 40.3 million people are trapped and 300,000 more are at risk. One and seven runaways were likely sex trafficked. Human trafficking is modern day slavery. Victims include children, teenagers, men and women. The average trafficking victim age is between ages 11-14, but that does not mean they won't take you if you are younger or older. Everyone is seen as a target. Human trafficking is happening everywhere, including Iowa. Many people believe that human trafficking is when someone goes missing or disappears, but it's not exactly like that. Some talk about what you wear can affect being taken. “I hear a lot that what you wear is why people take you and use you for trafficking,” Sophomore Christa Hall said. There are more factors that contribute to human trafficking and how and why people are trafficked. With all the different ways of being trafficked for sex and labor, it's not only kids and women being trafficked; men can also be. With many different ways of trafficking there are some used more than others. “Sex trafficking primarily utilize hotel and motels. We also see a lot of sex trafficking in illicit massage businesses. Labor trafficking often takes place in meat packaging plants, restaurants, and in agriculture,” YSS Founder George Belitsos said. Traffickers are not only in it to sell humans for money they also are in it for the drugs they can get out of it. People who are prescribed medication for mental illnesses are very vulnerable due to how they can sell them and their drugs. Getting into trafficking starts with the pimps, which are the people that sell victims. They bribe victims by giving them basic needs and because most victims are homeless, they have a better advantage of trapping them. “I’m young and anything could happen no matter how safe you are because they find people anywhere and take them,” Hall said. Iowa is a top state for the proportion of homeless youth who are runaways. Proven by teen human trafficking, one in three young kids that have run away will be approached for sex
in exchange for something of value in just two days. “We estimated that there are 250-300 victims being trafficked in Iowa at any one time,” Belitsos said. For the people that do escape human trafficking, it’s still a struggle every day to do things as they would before being trafficked. When getting out, many go into the system as well as their kids due to unstable homes. “The client I worked with was overly cautious or paranoid about her surroundings and who she let in her life. She was not trusting of anyone and found it hard to believe someone could actually love her for who she was,” Kim Sotter, in home counselor said. Not only do they have to face the fear of going out, but they also have to deal with the mental illnesses that now comes with the trauma. “Mental illness is extremely high because of what they have been through,” Sotter said. When getting out of trafficking, it is likely for some to go back due to how they can get resources from it. With many victims being homeless it is very likely that when they are helped to get out, they go back due to not having housing or necessities. “Because it’s all they know and they have no other support. No family or friends to run to or get help,” Sotter said. In human trafficking, there are many signs to look for. When seeing young youth, it is important to look for any type of abuse like burn marks, bruises, cuts, etc. People in human trafficking tend to be very discrete and keep to themselves. It is very important to keep an eye out for your surroundings due to the different ways people will recruit you. “Avoid traveling alone, especially late at night or in dark places. If you think you're being followed find people and tell someone a description of the person. Report anyone suspicious to the police. Be careful who you meet with strangers without letting someone know who you're meeting and where you're going. Safest way is just to avoid online interactions and dating,.” Sotter said.
“anything could happen no matter how safe you are because they find people anywhere.”

A hump in your life What is it like to live in pain? What is it like to have Schuermann’s Kphosis?
Contributed/E. Cosner
89 degree: Before surgery

64 degree: After surgery
If you live in a consistent amount of pain, reach out. There is a solution for everyone, including you. Story/ E. Cosner Page editor/ E. Cosner
Did you know that .3 percent of people have Scheuermann's kyphosis, and nearly one third of people with Kyphosis develop Scoliosis? You may look at a person with Scheuermann’s Kyphosis and automatically think, wow, he/she looks like a hunchback. But little do you know, it’s a condition called Scheuermann's Kyphosis. Scheuermann’s Kyphosis is the curvature of the spine. You may see videos on TikTok or other social media platforms that make jokes about Scoliosis while they’re all hunched over. However, they are incorrect about what condition hunching over is. Kyphosis is the shape of your vertebrae. A normal vertebra should be in the shape of a regular square block, however, when you have Kyphosis, your vertebrae is in a wedge shape. Pretend you’re stacking threeringed binders on top of one another. All the rings are on one side. The binders would stack as a curve instead of straight up, like it would be if you’re stacking books on top of each other. Such as the binders begin to curve, so does your spine. If you have Schuermann's Kyphosis, you may be thinking how do I take action? If your Scoliosis or Kyphosis is caught at a young age, you may be able to get a back brace to correct your spine as it is continuing to grow. Another option for more severe cases, is a spinal correction surgery. Although it’s rare to find a surgeon to do the surgery, finding one may be worth it to you. “It changed my child’s life emotionally and mentally, as she no longer felt she was a normal person,” parent Wendy Cosner said. Cosner begins to talk about the way it affected her life as a parent. It caused her worry, hoping her child wouldn’t be one of the unlucky ones that suffer heart failure through her back destroying her heart by pushing against it. During the diagnosis, she began to feel overwhelmed and inquisitive. “It takes doctor appointment after doctor appointment. It almost feels like it never ends. I felt I needed to keep taking her because I was afraid if I didn’t, something new would happen and it would be too late,” Cosner said. When you have Scheuermann's Kyphosis, your physical capabilities can vary depending on how bad your case is. It may be harder to bend down, exercise, do sports, or just regular old everyday things. Pain may be a huge factor in your ability to do things. Bending, twisting, or just chilling out can make the pain rise. “I used to love playing soccer, but after
a while, I could no longer do it because of the pain my back brought me. Until I got my surgery, I didn’t really enjoy doing any physical activity,” former kyphosis survivor Jada Sorrei said. If you’re thinking about having the surgery, you need to be aware of the preparation and the aftermath of it. It takes a series of doctor appointments to clear you for surgery. After you’re cleared, the doctor will give you an MRI and get labs done. However, the recovery from surgery is the worst part. Depending on how long it takes for you to get your body to begin healing, you can stay in the hospital for up to two weeks. During your hospital stay, they will help you sit up, stand and begin to walk. They will do arm exercises with you to help repair those muscles that had just been cut through. “The few weeks after my surgery was one of the worst pains I have ever felt,” Sorrei said. After surgery is where the real work begins. You have to begin readjusting your life. You must relearn to move and do things normally again. For the first six weeks, you can’t pick up anything heavier than a gallon of milk. You can’t sleep on your stomach, which is difficult if you’re a big stomach sleeper. It also gets very difficult if you get uncomfortable and need to readjust yourself. You may need some help when doing so.
“The list of frustrations in recovery can probably take up forty pages, but the recovery is always worth the end result,” Sorrei said.
Ariana Chale, a freshman at North High School watched her friend go through years of pain because of her back issues. “The surgery seemed awful for her, but you could tell how happy she was after she had it. She looked like she was confident again instead of having a big bump on her back,” Chale said. Although Chale didn’t understand at the time how painful her friends back was, she began to understand how much it meant for her to have the surgery and not be in so much pain anymore, even if that meant carrying a pillow around her school after she came back. “I don’t know how she did it and went through something like that. I'm not sure I could do that and still keep a smile on my face,” Chale said.

To resume, or to miss out Why high school students should make a resume and live by it Story/ J. Hildebrand Page editor/ J. Hildebrand It’s a large, fancy word… but what exactly does it mean? According to the Oxford dictionary, a resume is a document used and created by a person to present their background, skills, and accomplishments. You can use a resume for many different reasons, although it is typically used to secure new employment.
What do you put on a resume?
A resume typically has all of the basics on it, including your previous work experience, life and work skills, accomplishments, references, and even sometimes your GPA. “You should list your experience and past jobs, your GPA, your accomplishments, social skills, and references,” junior Nevaeh Moon said. Your resume is all about you. You need to get straight to the point. “Many times it also gives us a base where they can list specifically what they are seeking, maybe it’s a different type of application than what they applied for, maybe it tells me more about their future plans. Sometimes there are more oopurtunites for details than the questions we’re asking on the application,” Todd Shillington, who works in human resources at Scheel’s, said. Why is a resume so important? It is important to always attach a resume to a job application. Employers want to see a person’s experience in the field or if those with no experience have the skills, they can help develop the qualities they need. “A resume is quite important in the work world, it shows experi-
East High Scroll
ence. Would you rather have a rookie or a vet on your team?” junior Kalyb Quang said. Can a resume help me get a job faster than others? Some employers will not even take a look at somebody’s application if they did not put their resume on it. Other times, employers do not even have a place to attach a resume on their online applications. If the place of employment only accepts paper applications, it can help make a person stand out if they print out their resume and staple it to the application. “I always provide my resume because it makes the employer look at you more often than not and it makes them recognize you more than other applications. I attached my resume onto one of my applications and they called me faster than they did when I applied and did not attach my resume,” Moon said. Can I use the same resume for different job applications? By the time a person is 18, they should have a resume listing their experience and skills. This is so that if they suddenly need to get a job, they can have a resume on hand to attach to their job application. However, every job is different, therefore someone would need to tweak their current resume to fit the job position they are applying for. “I like when they tell me something along the lines of that they are interested in a job here, I’ve gotten resumes where they are applying at Scheel’s but it says their objective is to obtain a position with Principal or Wells Fargo or a totally different company, well that tells me that they’ve applied at other
/28
places, which is okay, but their not specifically putting in the effort that they want to work at Scheel’s,” Shillington said. How have other people benefitted from their resumes? There’s many specific times where a resume has helped lots of people around you. Ask around. You’re just up next. So, how do I make a resume? There are many resources to help you start building your resume. To begin, you need to think about what you’re going to put on it. It’s important to brainstorm about your experience or your qualities. There are many websites like resume-now. com, builder.zety.com, and myperfectresume.com that are free outlets with templates to help perfect your resume. Also, if you are experienced with either Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word, you can make your own resume. Search up ‘resume template’ on google images and use that as a reference while building your own. I made a resume, what now? After you make your resume, which should be fit for the jobs you’ll be applying for, start the applications. You may have some places in mind already. If you don’t, do not hesitate to search for jobs that are hiring, or try to ask around at school. Best wishes to you searching for a job with your new resume.

What comes on it? Two pickles, your choice of mayo or the spicy Cajun sauce, and a crispy chicken breast on a brioche bun.
What comes on it? Chicken breast fried in peanut oil, with two pickles, on a glutenfree bun.
First impression: When I first took a bite, I immediately tasted the flavors and spices in the mayo and chicken. It was so hot my nose was running. The sandwich was very big. It’s almost like you just ate a dul course meal. The sandwich is very fulfilling.
First impression: When I saw the sandwich, I thought to myself big, causing the sandwich to look unstable. I took a bite of it and it tasted kind of dry. It has flavor but I’d prefer the spicy sandwich because it gives the sandwich more flavor. The bread was very soft.
What I wish would have been better: The sandwich could have had a little bit more sauce on it. I also wish there was a combo so you dont have to pay for a full price drink and fries.
What I wish would have been better: I wish their Chick-fil-A sauce was regularly put on the sandwich instead of having to ask for multiple sauces. The sauce makes the sandwich taste way better by making it less dry.
Final thoughts: The Popeyes chicken sandwich is very tasty. The price of the sandwich is affordable and it’s very fulfilling. This chicken sandwich is most definitely now one of my favorite items at popeyes.
Final thoughts: The Chick- fil –A chicken sandwich is very good. Overall I think the Chick- fil -A sauce makes the sandwichgood. Bon Appetit.

Electric vehicles A new kind of car
Story by/ K. Pierce
Anti-Electric
You’re driving on the interstate in your brand-new electric car, minding your own business when suddenly, a truck speeds past you and gets in your lane, and the proceeds to blow black smoke out of their exhaust pipe which is called coal rolling. What would you do? How would you feel? This is what many people experience when driving an electric car Info on electric cars An electric vehicle is a car that has replaced gas with electricity and the cars generally have nice electronics inside. Some electric car selling companies are Tesla (model 3, model X, model S, etc.), Mitsubishi (I-MIEV), BMW (i3), and Chevy (spark EV and bolt EV). As time passes, more car companies are coming out with more electric cars. For example, Ford with the Mustang Mach-E and Jeep making their cars hybrid; with gas and electric. Pros and cons Of course, there are pros and cons of electric vehicles. A few cons are they have limited range, can be higher priced, can take a while to charge, and weather can affect the battery life. Some pros are you can install a charger to charge the car at home, they are fast, quiet, better for the environment, and electricity is less expensive than gasoline. Usually fast cars are loud like the Mustang or Challenger but now there is a car that is fast and quiet. “The battery is supposed to get 250/mi to the charge. I commute 100mi round trip each day. I’ve had to stop and charge it most days. I was told it needed a software update, so they came out and did that, but it didn’t completely fix it. So, then I was told cold weather negatively effects battery life and it just is what it is,” Tesla owner Ryan Holzer said.
There is a rise in popularity of electric vehicles people have not agreed on the topic of electric cars and have acted on the problem. Examples of this happening are, cutting them off on the road, keying or trashing their car, making rude gestures, blocking charging stations and one of the most popular ways is to coal roll. Coal rolling is when a truck increases the amount of fuel entering the engine causing it to blow out black smoke. Sometimes people can be against change especially if they aren’t used to changing , “I’ve gotten no negative reactions per se but a lot of hints that we’re doing it to be hip or for style points,” Tesla owner Kristi Holzer said. “I think people are cruel towards electronic vehicles because they are against the change,” freshman Selena Gonzalez said.

Important for the environment Cars are one of the main sources for greenhouse gasses so, electric cars are a step forward to help lessen the amount of gasses going into the air. Not only that but electricity costs less money than gas, so it saves you money in the long run. Another plus is that the batteries are recyclable, so you know where the batteries will go when a car needs a new battery.
