Black History Month abandoned? story/S. Burton

In 1926 Black History Week was created in the United States. It was celebrated during the second week of February because of many reasons. Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Association for the Study of African American Life and History launched Black History Week as a plan to bring attention to the offerings of black people throughout time. The very next year, Black History Week expanded into Black History Month, which is still being celebrated today. Unfortunately, it isn’t as popular as it used to be. Day by day, month by month, and year by year, Black History Month becomes less of a celebration. There isn’t quite a remembrance of it because people seem to not know much about the true history and meaning of it. But can you blame today’s society if it’s barely being taught? “It makes me mad

“This being Black History Month, I would like to ask people to celebrate the similarities and not focus on the differences between people of color and not of color. “ - Lynn Swann that Black History Month isn’t celebrated as much anymore because I feel like a lot of history is hidden from us already,” sophomore Madison Garcia said. Lots of people may have a different opinion about Black History Month but many believe it’s important. “I feel like it’s a necessity. Instead of learning about the history of African Americans, we are taking cooking classes,” sophomore Elhondra Brazzle said. As time goes by, things change and become different. The same goes with teaching ethics and techniques. “I usually don’t do something specific for Black History Month but I do believe it’s good to include the importance of the past because black history wasn’t talked about a lot in Iowa. Luckily, the newer textbooks give better perspectives and aspects of a variety of people,”

US History teacher, Mrs. Hoff said. Others may consider degrading ones background and history to one month is a bad thing for multiple reasons. One month may not be enough time or having a specific month for one race isn’t fair to the different minorities in the United States. “I think it’s great that we celebrate African American history in our country but we should celebrate all the cultures in our country too. It’s good for our society to remind us of what Black people went through because it is easy to forget but separating Black history from American history doesn’t help. It’s only labeling,” Gracia said. Although the past is the past, African American history doesn’t seem to be getting the respect or acknowledgement it deserves.

Job or Nah: Part Two The second edition of the topic hundreds of students decide upon each day

Helpful tips for a job promotion: 1. Show up to work on time

2. Be respectful

to your manager and co-workers

photo/ Excel Templates Pictured above, is a basic job application form. Remember that there may be more or less information you will have to supply, depending on the job you are applying for.

story/ A. Folkerts Jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Getting a job in high school seems to be a growing trend among students here at East High School. The best part of working is when you receive that paycheck at the end of the week, and when you finally have enough money to buy that one electronic device that you have been wanting to get for weeks. Many dif-

ferent businesses hire high schoolers (14-18 years of age). Some of those businesses include Panera Bread, HyVee, Target, Subway, and Starbucks. Remember that there are countless other businesses in Iowa that hire high school students. A lot of students expect to make to make “bank” when they start their first job. Rule number one: don’t expect

to make tons of money when you receive your first paycheck. There are ways to earn promotions to get a better job, and to earn a higher salary. For example, treating your manager with respect is one good way to get on your manager’s good side. Being on your manager’s good side is crucial to earning promotions and making your way up the pay ladder,

3. Have a good

attitude while working and do because at the end more than what is of the day, they are expected of you the ones that give you your paycheck. Another thing to keep in mind is that it may take a little time before getting a promotion. If promotions were given to anyone, employees wouldn’t work as hard at their occupation. Promotions aren’t given to just anyone, they are given to hardworking individuals that deserve them.

4. Follow the rules and the dress code

5. Have confi-

dence in yourself and learn from your mistakes

6. Turn off your

phone while working so you aren’t tempted to look at it

Two year community college for free

2014 East High School students wear what college they are going to after their high school years. Story/ B. Hail

What do you think about free community college?

Students here at East High School have had some troubling times while getting ready for college and they need to apply for colleges and get ready for their next school year. And they need to figure out how to pay for it. Community college students may be get-

ting some relief. President Barack Obama had addressed to the State Of The Union in January about free two year community college. President Obama's initiative would reduce community- college tuition cost to zero. To maintain this pro-

gram for the full two years, you have to maintain a 2.5 GPA or roughly a C+ average. Almost 90 percent of graduating high school seniors have applied for its new universal community- college program in many different states of the U.S.

“I feel that it’s good for people who can’t afford it so now they can further their learning,” Senior Heather Odom said. Odom plan to attend UNI.

Words of Encouragement

For those who are stressing during this time of the year...

“In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity,” – Albert Einstein

“Live and have fun when you’re young. I want people to dream. A lot of young kids don’t have any dreams these days, they give up too easily. I hope they can be excited about what’s going to happen tomorrow, because everything is possible,” – Lee Chaerin

“Most of us, swimming against the tides of trouble the world knows nothing about, need only a bit of praise or encouragement – and we will make the goal,” – Jerome Feishman

Are you thinking about your future too hard? Do you keep on saying to yourself “You can’t do it, just quit.” Are other people telling you what to do in life? Do you want to be happy but, for some reason you don’t even feel happy at all even if you’re doing the right thing? Do you feel as if you’re about to break down and give up on everything? Every day it’s the same sun, same moon. Your day is repetition of control-c’s and control-v’s meaning your day is just copy and pasting itself. You wake up, wash up, attend school, head back home and for some students, go straight to work. Everyone does this. Everyone has a routine they do every single day. Most of us have a planned future but is it really what you want? “Even if you break down, don’t ever run backwards, never,” BTS said in their song “Tomorrow.” Tomorrow is the day after today. Tomorrow is a day that everyone is curious about. Tomorrow becomes today, and today will become yesterday so what’s the use of trying? Tomorrow could be the day that you change everything. Break free from your simple life and do something you want to do for once. Don’t be trapped in the cycle of what they call, “road to success.” Your road to success is different from others. It’s ok to go your own way and go after your dreams. We all change but that doesn’t change the fact that we are all human beings. We are not something that could be trained or programmed to be perfect. “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind,” Theodor Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss said. Sit up straight in class and remember that everyone is capable of doing whatever they want to do in the future. Once you get pass this obstacle, you will be one step closer to your goal. Always give yourself compliments and take in hate as tips to help you in the future. Go after your dream. You’ll know it’s your dream when you feel like shouting “YES! This is totally me!” You can do it. Nothing will stop you. There are many great days ahead of you. Keep your head up!

“Never regret something that once made you smile.” – Amber Deckers

“Get going. Move forward. Aim high. Plan a takeoff. Don’t just sit on the runway and hope someone will come along and push the airplane. It simply won’t happen. Change your attitude and gain some altitude,” – Donald Trump

“It’s time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever - the one who recognizes the challenges and does something about it,” – Vince Lombardi

Dear Echo, @DearEcho 34m

East High School’s advice column

Life is a strange thing, isn’t it? It’s filled with madness and beauty. Sometimes you have to pick and choose your battles. It really hits you once you’re thrown out into the world alone and all of sudden have to pay your own bills and buy your own groceries.. But it can also be exciting. Life is what you make it, remember that. Find your passion and embrace it, don’t be afraid. It’s your life and your experience. It does not have to be measured by anyone else’s expectations. Learn to love and enjoy life’s simplicities!

Anonymous @needBalance_ 44m It’s hard to balance a social life and school and extracurricular activities.

Dear Echo, @DearEcho 41m It’s all about priorities. You know what needs to be done and what can wait, but that doesn’t mean you should take your friends/family for granted and not join any clubs because of homework. You can estimate out time you need for homework and get that done after/before your other activities and then you can figure out when you’re able to chill with friends. Maybe find a friend group within your activities, but don’t ever hesitate to branch out and get others involved.

@DearEcho

Anonymous @BackStabbed_ 53m This girl who is supposed to be my friend continues to have a “thing” with this guy she knows I really like, what do I do?

Dear Echo, @DearEcho 50m If you sit back and ask yourself if the guy is worth losing this friend over, then you have your answer. But if this girl doesn’t value the way you feel at all, then she isn’t your friend. It’s the ugly truth and I’ve had the same experience. If you’ve already told her how you felt before and after she chose to pursue something with this guy but she still continues, then she must not think your feelings are that important. I would avoid talking/venting to this person if you’re still having the same issues.

Anonymous @iCare_ 57m How do you ignore ignorance?

Dear Echo, @DearEcho 54m Well for starters, if you sense ignorance, don’t ignore it. You should enlighten people. Teach them the right way of going about life. Although there are many different styles of life, there should be a common ground of knowledge. In some cases it is stubborness that ceases a person’s ability to grow. If someone just argues and refuses to come to an understanding about something, then leave them to figure it out. You can’t force someone to learn or open their mind if they don’t want to. Be patient and remember that you can make all the difference in someone’s life without even realizing it, so lead by example.

HOW To Get a Bae 101

story / B. White and A. Khanthaphengxay

ward but don’t be too loud either. Any guy wouldn’t like a female that’s loud and likes to start trouble. A guy would love a strong independent women who knows her books, goes to class and keeps her negative comments to herself. Also a guy would love a girl who isn’t shy. As in expressing her emotions the right way. Be confident!

Hair: It’s cool and all to have nice

clothes with the new Jordan 11’s, but if your hair isn’t looking good, then you just messed up your whole game. How are you going to go up to future bae with your hair looking like Stevie Wonder cut your hair for free? It’s always okay to pick up a brush.

Dressing: Don’t dress like you’re going out to the club on a school day. For example, don’t dress like the females from Love and Hiphop Atlanta. Cover up ladies! You may feel fierce dressing the way you do but guys don’t like it when you’re showing off your junk when you’re with bae.

Odor: It’s nice to have cologne on, but

you don’t need to spray the whole bottle on yourself when you know you didn’t take a shower last night! Make sure you put deodorant on every morning and night, if not, I think you have some problems. You will get nowhere with future bae smelling like East’s wrestling room.

Clean Clothes: Now why would

you go up to future bae with jelly stain on your shirt? Actually wear a belt. No big clothes. Wear clothes that actually fit, not too tight now.

How you approach future bae: Go up to her real smooth. Look at

her in her eye, tell future bae how you feel about her at that point. I’m not saying go out there and pour your heart out to her because she’ll think you’re a creep right off the bat. I’m talking about something simple. Calling her beautiful, maybe sit with her when she all alone at the lunch table, something real nice and simple. You have to make future bae comfortable with you. rassing when you smile at bae and left over spinach is still lingering in between your teeth.

Don’t send a friend: Future bae would want to see that you’re not scared to say what’s on your mind, and I mean that in a good way.

Exo Zombies

How long can you survive? story/A. Mota verything around you is in fiery ruins. You and three other people are the only survivors. Everyone else turned into flesh eating zombies, and lucky you, you have to kill them. Zombies are back with a new name “Exo Zombies”, look and a new addition: the exo skeleton. This game is just like previous call of duty zombies, you start off with a pistol and 500 points and kill zombies until you get enough to unlock doors, get perks or weapons to get to farther rounds. The zombies themselves are different. They’re stronger, faster, and smarter. There are new “special” zombies other than the regular ones. They have the EMP (electro magnetic pulse) zombie that has blue energy radiating

E

from its body that once it hits you it will shut down your exo suit. There is also the infected zombie that comes out every five or so rounds and if you get hit by it you will have a minute to get to the decontamination chamber and spend points to disinfect yourself. Exploders do as they are called, they explode which can get annoying if you’re low on health and they blow up but you can also use them to your advantages as they will blow up and damage zombies around them. The last of them are the hellhounds which is a combination of the listed above except the infected. The main objective of this game is to survive as many rounds as you can while opening all the doors, getting good guns and getting

every perk to help you survive. Perks give you an edge in surviving, for example exo health gives you more health therefore it takes longer for you to down while exo reload lets you reload your weapon faster just in case you get into a tight spot. This game has gotten a lot of different criticism, both good and bad but for me it was an awesome game. It has some of the same features of traditional zombies but also it has its own unique mix which makes it a must get. I cannot wait to see what new maps will be added. It’s a good game and its worth getting. You can currently get it as an add on to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare for any console and PC.

Perks

Exo Medic- if playing alone, it revives you, if playing online or with friends it helps you revive people faster. Exo Health- gives you extra health so you wont go down easily. Exo Soldier- lets you shoot while exo sliding and you can hip fire better, also lets you switch guns faster. Exo Reload- lets you reload faster. Exo Slam- allows you to jump up and slam down onto zombies killing them.
