hello, future
Some helpful advice for those seniors that are stressing about college and what the future holds for college freshmen Story/ A. Folkerts & E. Rothmayer
Enough of the tears as you remember your time here at East High School. Stop dwelling on the past, and start getting excited for the future, seniors. Whether you are going to college, or not, you have some amazing encounters ahead of you. Yes, high school has been an eye-opening experience for you, but think of the adventures that you are about to go on as you enter your first year of college. You are just in luck, because colleges are going to help you out at this time in your life. Academic advisers, along with a few students, from a variety of colleges across the state of Iowa, have given some helpful advice to help you along with this stressful time in your life. Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, Drake, and DMACC are the colleges that have responded.
Q & A: With College Advisers/Students Question 1: If you could give one piece of advice to the college freshmen, what would you advise?
Question 2: Are there any programs you think a new student should check out or enroll in? Ali Harms- Drake
Lyndsey Feikes- Drake
“One piece of advice I would give to incoming freshman would be get overly involved. Once you’re involved in clubs and organizations, you can always pull back if it turns out to be too big of a commitment or you don’t have time. Also, if you’re living in the dorms, keep your door open. You don’t have to keep it open all the time, but for a couple hours a day, so people can stop in and say hi.”
Question 3: Any welcome message you would like the students of East High School to receive?
“It’s important to study an area for which you are passionate about, or at least interested. There’s no right or wrong- it’s whatever makes you the happiest.”
Question 4: Any other information/advice you would like to add?
Jeremy Austin- DMACC
Alma Marquez- ISU
“Whether you are looking to cut cost by first attending DMACC prior to transfer or to learn a skilled trade, DMACC has coursework to help anyone for employment and in life.”
“Don’t ever feel like you are alone in the struggle. I assure you that there is someone else in that same auditorium or recitation class that is just as lost and frustrated as you. You just need to speak up, ask questions, and lean on one another for help. Together you will succeed.”
Dear, Freshmen...Sincerely, Upperclassmen Alma Marquez- ISU
Kristen Bramhall- Drake
“When I came to Drake, I didn’t think I “The best piece of advice was going to make any friends. Anonymous @guideme_ 36m What should juniors have done before their senior year?
Dear Echo, @DearEcho 34m As a junior, you should take as many AP classes as you can. This will get you FREE college credit and better prepared for college classes. Get to know your counselor and stay informed about scholarship opportunities. Apply for scholarships as a junior, but be 100 percent sure of where you’re applying before you do!
East High School’s advice column
Anonymous @FreakedOuttt_ 44m How do I make sure I don’t have a freaky roommate?
Dear Echo, @DearEcho 41m There isn’t much to do to prevent that unless you request to have a specific person to be your roommate beforehand. You could also fill out a dorm room questionnaire (survey on your lifestyle/interests) in the process of signing up for college to have a better chance of rooming with someone tolerable. If anything, try to get to know your roommate, communicate each other’s differences. If they are super freaky and uncomfortable and you two cannot come to terms with a single thing, file a complaint to your residence hall advisor and ask for a reassigned room. If all else fails, try becoming the freaky roommate.
@DearEcho
Anonymous @BlankyOrNahh_ 53m What should I take with me to college?
Dear Echo, @DearEcho 50m You should pack the necessities, perhaps with travel kits to stay organizedclothes, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brush, soap, bandaids, umbrella, condoms… Anything that fits the environment of your campus. Of course you should bring a few things to decorate your side of the dorm room, to give people a jist of what you enjoy, or are interested in. If you bring something of value, make sure to keep it locked up somewhere safe when unattended. Thievery is not uncommon. Water bottles are good to have as well as non perishable, long lasting/travel sized foods such as granola bars, easy mac, and peanut butter.
Anonymous @movinon_ 57m How do I tell my girlfriend I don’t want to be with her when I leave for college?
Dear Echo, @DearEcho 54m If you truly believe there isn’t a future with this person and that it isn’t worth the effort, then you shouldn’t continue it any longer. It is best to do this in person and depending on how long you two have been together, you should prepare yourself for any reaction. You need to be sincere, but not rude. Let them know exactly how you feel, reassure her/him that there is a future ahead for both of you but that you two will find the right paths for yourselves. College is a place for self discovery, just remember that.

Work hard, play hard, school hard Preparing for the bigger picture... college Story/ J.May Feeling prepared while being a student athlete is a big challenge. “I do not know where I am going yet. I’ve filled out two applications to Buena Vista and Lindenwood. Also ISU but I never turned it in,” Courtney Fudge said. “Courtney Fudge is a good girl, she works hard and does all the right things,” softball coach Thana Heller said. All of those words are used to describe Fudge th estudent athlete making her way to
college. Because she likes to stay busy Fudge has played softball for the past 10 years of her life, rugby for the past two years and took up tennis this year because she wanted to something else to do. Friends. Friends are the key along the way. They can put you in a better mood, and give you a good laugh. “Courtney is so bubbly. She usually puts everyone in a good mood. She doesn’t
like conflict. She is competitive and a go with the flow type,” senior Sidney Biondi said.
Memories can make or break your high school years. “Fudge is the type of person you can rely on but sometimes she makes plans and then falls asleep and misses those plans. So if that happens you tease her the next time you have plans so she doesn’t miss them,” senior Darouth Douch said. Support is a big factor when looking for potential colleges, because college can be one of the biggest steps in your

life that can either affect you for better or worse. “My mom and my close friends have been a good support team, they have always wanted me to succeed in whatever I’m doing,” Fudge said. Looking back on all the years Fudge will remember these few things. “I had tons of s’mores and lots of stuff to do. All in all it was pretty good, but I would have joined tennis earlier and gave swimming a try,” Fudge said.
“She is obsessed with anything that tastes like s’mores,” sophomore Laurie Custard said. page / 9 Featrue
College Course Oddities
Story/ E. Rothmayer
End of the year, it’s just around the corner whether it’s your first or last year at East High School everyone’s year is coming to a close. For the final curtain call, a list of weird or unusual college courses has been compiled just for you.
“The Science Of Harry Potter” “Can genetic engineering explain Fluffy the three-headed dog? Could antigravity research produce a flying broomstick? A class at Frostburg State University in Maryland tries to answer these questions and more. In the Science of Harry Potter course, students analyze magic by applying concepts of physics, biology, chemistry and engineering, and they take a look at everything from the latest teleportation research (“apparating”) to Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans and the science of taste. Physics professor George R. Plitnik says the class isn’t all fun and games; however, he has been known to dress up as Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.” (Frostburg State University-MD)
“Biology Of Jurassic Park” “From the syllabus: “Even though they are extinct, dinosaurs can serve as models to understand many biological principles, including patterns of biodiversity, evolution, extinction, community ecology, homeostasis and behavior. To understand these principles, we will answer questions such as: How many species of dinosaurs were there? Are birds really dinosaurs? Did dinosaurs show parental care?”The real question, I think, is whether velociraptor can be brought back to life and exhibited in an amusement park “(Hood College-MD)
“Disney Feature; Then And Now” “Evaluation of why Disney’s animated features have dominated until recently and ramifications of this dominance on animation and society.” Do you suppose it includes field trips to nearby Disneyland or Disney Studios? I’m guessing not.” (UCLA-CA) Sources: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/college/, http://www.cnn.com/, http://www.fastweb.com/, http://www.mnn.com/, http://mentalfloss.com/
Page Editor/ E. Rothmayer
“Tattoos in American Popular Culture” “If you’re a fan of unique ink, look no further. This course examines American tattoo culture and its roots, exploring how the popular culture of cool ink has developed into a sub-culture over the years and how it relates to race, class, gender and sexuality” (Pitzer CollegeCA)
“The American Vacation” “Sounds like a breezy look at the Hamptons, Disneyland and Route 66, doesn’t it? Not quite. Students will focus on “Social history of vacations; cultural significance of contemporary patterns; [and] how experiences and meanings are shaped by race, class, gender.” (University Of Iowa-IA)
“Oh, Look, a Chicken” “Embracing Distraction as a Way of Knowing:
Not only does it have an amazing name, “Oh, Look, a Chicken!” Has the best course description I’ve ever read: “Oh, look, a Chicken”....This course will pursue ways of knowing through embracing [little ants, carrying a morsel of food across the table] what it means to be a distracted [I could sure enjoy a peanut butter sandwich right now] learner as well as [OMG--I get to go to the beach this summer] developing an awareness [I need to trim my fingernails] of one’s senses. The instructor teaches in the school of music, [do I hear water dripping?] So there will be an element related to that woven [spiders are amazing] into the course. [Oh, it’s the fish tank behind me] Those registering for this section may even learn to juggle [I’ll be right down, I just have to finish this...What was I working on?]”. (Belmont University-TN)

What song should I play ...
Story / G. Gutierrez We’ve all had that awkward moment. You know, that one moment where everything that could go wrong, goes wrong. Yeah, that one. All those moments have happened already and there’s nothing we can really do about them. But there is one thing. We can look at possible awkward situations and add music to those scenarios to make them less awkward.

...when I know I’m in trouble and I have to go home and my parents are waiting on me?
...when I serve myself a big bowl of Fruit Loops but then I realize there’s no milk? Cher Lloyd - I Want U Back
...when I’m trying to get a summer body but I keep eating Fong’s Pizza, Doritos, tacos, Bdubs, and Burger King? Demi Lovato - LaLaLand Why that song ? Because in the song, there is literally the line, “I’m not a supermodel, I still eat McDonals”. I connect with that on a spirtiual level. It’s like, “I could get into shape, but why would in the world would I do that? I mean. Food”
...when I want to tell my friends, “let’s not turn up tonight, lets stay in and study instead”? Lupe Fiasco Adoption of Magic Why that song ?
Eminem - When I’m Gone Why that song ? In the song, he (Eminem) is talking about how people should feel after he’s gone. He says he doesn’t want people to be sad which is my message to the people after my parents ground me.
Why that song ? Cher Lloyd’s song “I Want You Back” explains the whole scenario except replace boy with milk and you’ll understand.

It’s good for friends to not go out and party and drink and who knows what. It’s good to stay home and play a song that explains the wonders and beauty of life.

Last but not least.. Final words from the people that have been there for the long run Story / M. Buchacker
I
t happens every year, it gets hot outside and the days get longer. Seniors are looking forward to their last day of school. As the visions of graduation appear closer, the seniors get that itch to be out of high school. They have done their time and they are ready to move on in life whether that
is to attend college, join the military or maybe just spending some time living life. But when the seniors needed help or advice they turned to teachers, the ones that were always there to help them out. So here is some advice on the future from the ones that have always been there for you. Whether you take this advice or not it will be useful.

Q: How long have you been together? A: 2 years and counting
Q: How are you going to continue your relationship in college? A: We’re going to visit each other on the weekends. She’ll be coming up to NIACC to watch the baseball games. We’re going to continue to text and talk on the phone.
Q: How are you going to continue your relationship in college? A: We’re just going to go with the flow, really no special plans.
Q: Advice for incoming seniors about getting ready for college with a relationship? A: Don’t pick a college that they’re going to just because they’re going there. Pick a college to go to because its the best fit for you. If it happens to be the same college then that’s a bonus and if you like each other enough it’ll work.

Q: What advice do you have for other couples going into college? A: Just trust each other. Let them live their life. Don’t let your relationship hold back dreams you’ve had your whole life. Q: Jason, what’s your favorite memory from your senior year with Laurie? A: When she would bring me food and drinks to my tennis meets.

The Champions League one of soccer’s greatest tournaments
Riveting Stats Story/ A.Mota
Y
ou run out onto the field where there are thousands of people cheering and chanting, awaiting the start of the match. Not to mention the millions of other people watching the game at home from their television. The soccer game is about to start and all that’s on your mind is if you win you have a chance to become the champion of Europe. The Champions League is a soccer tournament held every year to see which team is the best in Europe and also which league, that consists of qualifying, group stages, round of 16, quarter finals, semifinals and then the final. Every league gets teams that have to play other teams to get qualified into the group stages. They get a home and away game and whichever club scores the most goals advances to the group stages. The group stages
have eight groups with four teams in each. In this stage the teams play each other twice, home and away. The top two teams in each group advance to the round of 16. From there the remaining teams draw to see who they get as their opponents. They play a home and away game and the score is aggregated. Aggregate means that the result from the first game is carried over to the second game: for example Real Madrid beat Schalke 04 2-0 which means in the second game Schalke needs to score 3 goals to win and make the final score 3-2 to get the win. Next stage is quarter finals which is the elimination stage. Once you lose you’re out. Four teams will be left which is the semifinals that get a home and away game. Winners will get a ticket to go to Berlin where this year’s final will be held at.

Aron Mota Favorite Animal: Goat Played soccer for East High for Four Years Favorite Pokemon: Charmander Favorite color: Blue Self-proclaimed best Pokemon trainer in the 515, Aron Mota is moving toward his future as he graduates this year. Though he hasn’t decided where he would like to go to college he knows he wants to have a stable job and eventually get married. Mota isn’t too worried about his future though, his favorite quote (of unknown origin) says this: “If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it, then how bad of a decision can it really be?” Mota enjoyed high school, for him being a Scarlet meant being involved with his school, attending events, and being part of a sport. His favorite memory from high school is his very first varsity soccer game at East. “The feeling of being on the field was unexplainable,” Mota said.

But East High isn’t something he says’s he’s leaving behind, James believes that you’re a Scarlet for life. He says the most important thing he learned in high school is “not everything goes your way. People won’t always agree with you and like you, but you have to learn to ignore the negativity”.
