EASTTOPICS RESIDENCY BOOKLET SPRING/SUMMER 2019

About Easttopics

Easttopics is a non-profit initiative launched in 2013, led by young art professionals based in Hungary and Serbia and dedicated to the promotion of the Eastern European contemporary art field. Working as a think tank for the Eastern European art communities, Easttopics is a genuinely interdisciplinary cooperative which goal is to draw the Eastern contemporary art field and the international art scene closer to each other. This cross-border project takes form as an expanding on-line website and database focusing on the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. Easttopics aims at mapping and providing more visibility to protagonists of the Eastern European art life, should they be artists, art professionals, institutions, events or publications. It also wishes to act as a dynamic platform fostering connections, exchanges, community building, and cooperations for both practice-based and research-based projects on a local, regional, and international level. We believe that the comprehension of the Eastern European contemporary art scene requires personal contacts and experiences with our field of study. This ongoing project is therefore built on the knowledge we acquire during our self-funded travels and nourished by our identification and understanding of site- and situation-specific questions, topics, issues addressed by the art field in each of these countries.

The gallery was founded in 1980 in the frame of a lifelong learning centre. Operating as a non-profit gallery, it aims at encouraging and developing visual arts in Zagreb or more precisely a municipality of Zagreb called Velika Gorica, which has an increasing number of inhabitants. Situated in the building of the Culture House, itself hosted in a newly-built housing estate together with a cinema and a library, the gallery quickly integrated into the tradition of Zagreb culture centres that dedicated a significant portion of their activities to visual culture. Velika Gorica gained its city status in 1995, and GalĹženica gallery became the only institution of its kind in the city. During its 38 years activity, more than 250 art exhibitions and other events were organised, featuring over 300 national and foreign artists, art critics, curators and designers. During the last twenty years, the gallery worked on building the reputation of new media, and articulating socially and critical sensitive art through strictly curated international exhibitions. Riga Perfomance Festival Riga city

Open Call Deadline: 30 March 2019 Disciplines: artists, art historians, researchers and curators Website: www.rigaperformance.lv Contact: starptelpa@rigaperformance.lv Latvian Centre for Performance Art invites artists, art historians, researchers and curators to participate in the international performance festival Riga Performance Festival: Starptelpa (2019) that will take place in Riga from 10.06- 16.06.2019. The Festival programme will include live and mediatized performances, a conference, public lectures, exhibitions, master classes and workshops. The program focuses on performance art as a sovereign form of art in contemporary context. Performance art is an intermedia form of art with no strict boundaries among the involved media and art disciplines. It is a hybrid phenomenon in the arts discourse allowing several arts to co-exist (visual arts, physical theatre, dance, media art, installation, etc.), creating an ambiguous in-between space or liminal space. In this space paratheatrical, sound and/or art practices can develop new, experimental and previously unprecedented artistic forms. The most crucial media of performance art – the presence of the artist, the body, time and duration, space, relationship with the spectators – may be combined with music, philosophy, poetry, sculpture, dance, cinematography, sculptural objects / installations, as well as non-art, for example, everyday objects, equipment and tools.

The topics include, but are not limited to the following questions: ● What is the meaning of “control” on a personal level; what happens when we are out-of-control or under too much of self-control? ● Are we trying to escape control or can it be a motivating factor? ● What “control” means in creative practice? ● What is our understanding of control in contemporary society and political discourse exercised through surveillance and other disciplinary measures? ● What are the manifestations of control in the private and public space?
