FANATIC SINCE 81
Success Through Passion
what we are
2
Rider: Marcilio Browne
This year we celebrate more than 30-yrs in the business. A milestone that’s unrivalled in the sport. Fanatic was founded in 1981 by Udo Schütz on foundations of focus and passion – values that have stood firm ever since - key principles that continue to achieve success. In 2010, the Fanatic team won 2 of the 3 Men’s World Cup Titles, with Victor Fernandez triumphant in waveriding and Gollito Estredo notching an unequalled 4th Freestyle Championship. Yoli de Brendt placed 2nd in Women´s Freestyle, Pierre Mortefon was voted most-talented new Slalom Racer, plus Klaas Voget, Marcilio Browne and Peter Volwater continuously achieved top results in PWA World Tour events. This victory spree doesn’t come by fluke. For years our whole team has trained and competed only on in-house protos and production boards – so that our expertise is kept exclusive to just you and Fanatic. Customers benefit the most from this valuable experience that is backedup by countless winning test-results which prove the value of our CAD database and CNC shaping system. At Fanatic we are as proud of the winning magazine reviews on our walls as we are of the PWA trophies won since investing in the CAD system back in 2004. Last year, a sweeping revamp of the range enhanced by epic new graphic effects amazed the windsurfing world. And this season our production test-winners Shark, Hawk, Ray and Viper remain as do Victors’ World-Cup-winning boards the NewWave and NewWave Twin. A massive focus went into a second generation, faster, more reactive Quad Wave thanks to an intense team effort. And all eyes are now on a 5th Freestyle World Title after Gollito’s favorite board – the Skate got a total makeover. Details, relentless testing, measuring and feeding the database are driven everyday by that famous focus and passion. The next success story you’ll see will be the legendary Falcon due in 2012.
An all-new shape and superlight paint-free finish are promised along with supersonic speed. The SUP range has seen equal effort. Sebastian Wenzel and team have spent hours on the water and in the development center. The results are inspiring. Fanatic provides a compact range covering the total spectrum of use and conditions. This year four technologies are available for every taste and budget, and vast detail has gone into specific fin and paddle specifications. This true ‘Total Boardriding’ program is completed with our modern and innovative surfboards. Aussie Star-Shaper Bruce McKee brings decades of experience, particularly with modern Quad-Fin innovations in Surf-design. His high-class shapes boast super-stiff, strong and light bamboo epoxy layups with carbon rails, in a mix of boards and constructions for beginners to big wave merchants. Last but not least are the Surfskates and the surfing sensation we’ve put on the streets, perfect for carving-it-up and feeling the rush of the ocean and mountains in an urban setting. Precision trucks and premium decks allow you to push your style to the limit. Thanks for riding with us for another year. Here’s to another 30!

30 YEARS 1981 – 2011 FANATIC
WHERE WE COME FROM Success Through Passion
1982 1981 Fanatic was founded by Udo Schütz.

Fanatic produced the first production Pintail shapes.
1986 1985 The bestseller boards Bat and Viper are launched together with the Cat, the most successful Raceboard in the history. Introduction of fibre composite construction with thermo moulded ASA foil combined.
Our long-lasting recipes for success are shapes that can be ridden by everyone and at the same time be World Cup contenders. Passion and performance, our watchwords from the past, are still lived and breathed 100% at Fanatic. A key factor in such long-lasting, consistent success is that we never chased trends for the sake of it. New fashions were always analyzed and checked first for tangible benefits and to this day a Fanatic board only comes onto the market if the whole team is convinced of measured progress. Take the iconic Viper as an example. An all time bestseller in the school and learner category. At the time of its release wide and short Beginnerboards were in vogue. Only after intense discussions with instructors, magazines and our team was the concept for the Viper put together with good handling characteristics in light winds for early steps, but longer and a bit narrower with a longer waterline to give value and help users onto the intermediate stage. As we’ve seen time and time again it was the customers’ experience that the new fad forgot about first.
Fanatic rider Cesare Cantagalli jumps the first ever Killer Loop, Andrea Hoepper wins production board WC in France (overall and course racing).
Close collaboration between the teamriders and shaper was and still is a key factor at Fanatic. In 2001 a new era of production Waveboards began with the launch of the Goya line. For the first time ever massproduced Waveboards stood proud at the highest levels of competition. World titles are one thing, but our customer’s smiles are more important. Take the Skate Freestyleboard: A classic decorated with 4 Freestyle World Cup titles but still enjoyed by thousands for Freeride fun and a top-performer in dozens of magazine tests. The Bee 289 also set a benchmark in its time. In fact it was the first easy-to-sail performance Freerideboard of its kind. From first-time jiber to seasoned racer it had a place in everyone’s hearts. The biggest innovation was and still is the switch to CAD design and CNC production in 2004. A totally new dawn with endless possibilities of analysis, comparison and production had begun. And the beauty was that we could virtually guarantee never going backwards with such a massive database of figures collected – loads even from my notes and numbers from the ‘old days’. The killer blow comes in our
1988 Viper and Bat beat all sales records. Fanatic moves up to one of the worldwide leading brands. Fanatic enters the Snowboard business.

1990 Andrea Hoepper wins production board WC in Norway (overall and course racing). Fanatic takes over the board brand Alpha.

policy to never let riders use other shapers. We share our secrets only within the team or paying customers who are buying from a b rand with a massive head start on the CAD adventure. In 1981 yachtsmen Udo Schütz, owner of the America’s Cup Yacht “Container” and one of the largest plastics-producer in the world, founded the Fanatisc brand and manufactured the first production pintail ever. Shapers Peter Thommen, Phillip Pudenz and Marco Copello were all involved in famous creations that older windsurfers will remember – the Rabbit, Cat, Boa, Mamba and Viper – benchmarks of their time. Many of the most successful windsurfers in the 80s and 90s rode at the peak of their careers Fanatic boards. Maui Meyer, Nik Baker, Robby Seeger, Robert Territehau and Francisco Goya celebrated their biggest victories on and with Fanatic. Along with technological advancements Fanatic riders were pushing the envelope too. In 1986 Cesare Cantagalli completed the first forward loop rotation. “The Killer-Loop is here”, headlined Germany’s surf magazine. The Fanatic
team also dominated at national regattas where Andrea Höpper, Heiko Trebesch, Heiko Grelle, Knut Budig and stacks of various national-level team riders won pretty much everything that there was to win. And this was all pre-1994 and the new CAD era where Fanatic’s long-lasting collaboration with shaper Sebastian Wenzel – himself a formerly successful competitor with the understanding of the highest levels of competition intensity. The results are innumerable test winners and PWA-trophies and not least PWA World Cup titles, the best possible result for riders and material. Gollito Estredo won an unsurpassed 4th PWA Freestyle world cup title in 2010 - a glorious season where Victor Fernandez was also PWA Wave World Champion. The passion runs from the podium to the warehouse where all employees feel the drive and focus it takes to both win and bring smiles to people’s faces.

Klaas Voget (Fanatic World Cup Rider & R&D Manager)
Cesare Cantagalli (Former World Cup Star)
“I grew up in a small city in the north of Germany. By coincidence my neighbor at the time was Heiko Trebesch – Fanatic team rider and member of the development team. I experienced my first planing sensations and learned to jibe on a Fanatic Ultra Rat borrowed from Heiko. I achieved my best results in 2008 and 2009 on NewWave production boards with a 3rd and 2nd place at the World Cup in Sylt. Nowadays I’m the R&D manager and work closer than ever with Brand Manager Craig Gertenbach and Shaper Sebastian Wenzel.”
“I like to remember myself at the times at Fanatic. It was November 1986; I was 17 years old and showed-up at the Aloha Classic and stunned the Hawaiians with the most radical move ever. It was like an Italian cook trying to teach a Japanese chef how to roll Sushi!”
Nik Baker (Former World Cup Star & Fanatic UK Agent) “Fanatic was my first real sponsor at an age of 15. I was sponsored for nine years from Fanatic during my 20-year career. Among others I won all my six indoor world cup titles on Fanatic. It’s the only brand that I used only production boards at competition from – this says pretty much everything you need to know!”
1992 1991 Fanatic produces as the first manufacturer windsurf boards with the high-tech material NOMEX-HONEYCOMB, which is normally used only in the air and aerospace industry.
Andrea Hoeppner wins the production board European Cup in Denmark.
1995 Introduction of the first mass production in Semi Custom Technology.
1994 Fanatic takes over the brand Copello and founded a big development center in France. The collaboration with shaper Sebastian Wenzel started here.

Ralf Bachschuster (Former World Cup Star)
Philip Pudenz (Former Fanatic Shaper)
“We had the best material of the time and everything worked for me in those years. I was ranked 5th in the PBA World Tour with Fanatic and was able to win the Slalom World Cup on Sylt. These were the best experiences in my career!”
“Fanatic was always near the top of event rankings. Many of the best riders were under contract with Fanatic. Top Pros like Heiko Grelle and Craig Gertenbach both used the product and operated the brand - the results speak for themselves!”
1999

Craig Gertenbach (Fanatic Brand Manager)
Francisco Goya (Former World Cup Star)
“The very first moment I stepped on a Fanatic board in competition I was blown away by the performance, still today we fulfill our promise of maximum performance on our high end products, whilst making some of the most user friendly and comfortable test winners in our allround shapes. I´ve seen it all at Fanatic since 95, as a World Cup pro rider, tester, through to brand manager, it´s never boring and always inspiring to be a part of the Fanatic brand!”
“I remember the brand Fanatic from the 80s when I started windsurfing. At the time I yearned to own a Mosquito or Bee. Later, I worked together and developed my own signature lines with them. I’m super thankful for this time and wish them all the best for the future.”
2005 2001 Fanatic launched the Cross board, a very successful concept of crossover designs.
2004
2002 Fanatic offers as the first manufacturer all board models in Semi Custom Technology and sets a new standard. All other producers follow this path in the following years. Fanatic launched the Falcon 90 – Thunder Tail – the first Formulaboard with really deep and big cutouts. The Falcon dominated the racing scene for many years.

The first Fanatic prototype fully designed on a high end CAD system has been shaped on the CNC machine by Sebastian Wenzel.
The Hawk was the first Fanatic board to be mass produced from CAD design. Every single Fanatic board has been CAD designed since then and is archived in a data base.
Gollito Estredo (4 × PWA Freestyle World Champion)
Victor Fernandez (PWA Wave World Champion 2010)
“Fanatic means everything to me. Since the beginning of my career they’ve supported me and everything I’ve won and achieved has been together with Fanatic.”
“I’ve been connected to Fanatic since the beginning of my professional career in 2001. Since then I’ve won at Guincho, Sylt 4 times at the Pozo PWA World Cup and finally a World Title in waves in 2010 with Fanatic boards under my feet. I grew up with Fanatic and merged into the development team with Marcilio, Klaas, Sebastian and Craig. It’s a great feeling to become World Champion with products that I was part of developing.”
Sebastian Wenzel (Fanatic Shaper)

Sebastian Wenzel / CAD Shaping
HOW WE DO IT
Fanatic Shaper Sebastian Wenzel
CNC: Perfection is Never Enough Over 8 years ago Fanatic’s shaper Sebastian Wenzel kick started our groundbreaking CAD/CNC design and manufacturing program. Since then we’ve built an unbeatable database of precise tuning and tweaking data that will take our competitors years to replicate. Sebastian’s massive archive of proven outlines, rocker lines and rail shapes continues to expand as our knowledge of CAD-tuning develops – all totally for your benefit and pleasure on the water. Sebastian Wenzel: “I’ve always been a data freak. Long before we invested in the CAD technology, I’d meticulously noted and stored vital figures on winning shapes – even right down to what grade of sandpaper I used! Of course feel is vital too but even a master Craftsman will never beat a CNC milling machine that can work within thousandths of millimeters. There’s been a fascinating journey along the way as daily we learn more and more – and an unforgettable feeling of pride as winning test results from magazines globally fly-in to prove the effort was worth-

while and the theories proven. No matter what you hear elsewhere, I’m confident nobody else can precisely compare prototypes likefor-like to guarantee significant advances.“ This information’s so valuable to both you and us that we only allow our team riders to use Fanatic production or custom boards and direct their expert knowledge and feedback exclusively to the Fanatic R&D setup. The most inspirational fact of all from the CAD program is that each time a new idea sparks-off a new concept, we’re pretty much guaranteed to only make forward progress. Could your current shaper say the same thing in total confidence?
textreme®
what inspires us
After the success of last season’s FreeWave TeXtreme® 95, we’ve expanded our use of the super-efficient TeXtreme® Spread Tow technology to create a 3-board line in the most popular sizes of this test-winning series, the FreeWave TeXtreme® 85, 95 and 105L models. TeXtreme® boards combine an extremely light layup of PVC, wood and TeXtreme® carbon fabric that not only has a stunning rail and base visual effect, but also a super strong and efficient performance too. The main advantage of TeXtreme® over standard carbon fabric layups is the flat Spread Tow weave structure that uses significantly less
resin to absorb into the yarn while delivering extra strength at the same time. Elsewhere on the FreeWave TeXtreme® models, the deck areas use high quality full Carbon Kevlar material to offer the most efficient weight to impact resistance ratio possible!

how we care

Rider: Marcilio Browne
Every 2012 Fanatic board will proudly display the “Fanatic Ocean Minded” logo as a sign of our pledge towards a cleaner and greener environment. After years of reliance on toxic processes, we’re trying everything we can to offset our sport’s impact on the ecosystem and to reduce our carbon footprint. By promising to always examine and adjust our constructions, packaging and printing procedures, we are leading the way to a cleaner future.
product compared to routed blocks of foam. In addition, at all of our audited production sites we take particular care to extract all dust and gas particles through adequate vacuum and filtration systems. The use of wood also demands some extra creativity. By using resin systems and colour components that are optimized based on their solvent concentration we’ve managed to produce striking graphics to match, with minimal extra consequence.
Many of these initiatives are highly visible - such as our use of Bamboo and Pine Wood constructions and the Basalt technology in many Limited Edition boards, as well as the use of less resins in our stunning Oxeon TeXtreme® program. But others such as newer resins, less toxic paints and EVA pads are less obvious - but just as important.
Finally, we try to minimize the amounts of transportation packaging without compromising the protection of your treasured products, so that they use less fuel to deliver and can be mostly recycled once again. By joining us you’re helping to keep it clean and make our planet a safer place to enjoy the benefits of wind and water.
And for 2012 the list has grown further. We now use a foam blank core blown without generating ozone and greenhouse gases that’s expanded using steam alone. This means a blank with zero waste

Top quality and high-tech specification Biax Carbon has a perfect weight to stiffness ratio as a result of its very fine weave, plus has fantastic dynamic flex. In combination with PVC Sandwich Technology and Glass reinforcements, it provides a perfect stiffness / flex / weight ratio on the Falcon Slalom line. We used the same basic construction for our Freeride Limited Edition boards, except that on the deck we have a full Carbon Kevlar layup which has a better shock absorbing character than pure carbon, for more comfort, whilst offering a very stiff and light performance, which is needed for these high performance Freeride / Freerace boards (Shark LTD / Hawk LTD / Ray LTD). On the bases of the LTD boards we have the new innovative Basalt cloth, a cloth which is not only technically superior to many other standard cloths, but also environment friendlier in both the creation and re-cycling thereof. All of these models are produced with the light finish sanded look, for extra weight savings, whilst the new polished and airbrushed rails and bases are the ultimate optic for 2012!

Rounded Pintail
Our silky 2nd generation Quad line’s leapt to a different level. 5 new rounded pintail shapes built for the 4-fin concept give ultimate, dragless traction from slab surf to slush. Now earlier-planing thanks to wider outlines, smart volume flow and less tail kick, they’re faster too with a flat power section between the straps. All the extra acceleration and speed complements the tight turning ability from higher scoop entry, shorter length, awesome pintail release and extra fin toe grip for cranking it on. Now sporting the lighter, streamlined Slot Box and a broader spectrum of size choice there’s a clean-carving Quad for you. Available in 69, 75, 81, 87 and 94 litre options in no-compromise Carbon Kevlar Light Team Edition (TE) and 75 / 81 /87 in GDS as a lightweight, yet affordable alternative. All with quality Choco fins and weight-saving matt finish bottoms. Victor Fernandez (E-42), PWA Wavesailing World Champion 2010: “These days all wave shapes work in pretty much all conditions but the Quads come with that extra license to push a bit harder - but still let you keep control. That’s pretty important to any level of sailor I think. Their wind range is higher too, so they’ll probably be my first choice board in most of the places on tour.”

HIGH PERFORMANCE NEWWAVE TE PREPREG FIN
Airbrush Base
A modern compact outline with the classic directional feeling. Our proven double concave, with full soft rails forward, and tucked rails on a fast, thin tail give the greatest single fin sensations with unbelievable grip for tighter turns. From the latest slashing style to drawn out flowing lines, the NewWaves CAD-formed volume distribution works in the wildest range of conditions, and is arguably our greatest jumping shape of all time. All 4 sizes (69, 76, 83 and 91) sport iconic polished rails with airbrushed metallic and visible carbon artwork, and are delivered in mega-stiff and light Carbon Kevlar deck and Carbon bottom Team Edition (TE) construction only.
Key Features _ Modern short, wide Planshape _ Floatation and Flowing Rails front of center _ Proven Double Concave Bottom for full power turns _ Balanced Tail Rocker and Tucked-Under Rails for tight, fast carving _ Smart CAD-engineered volume flow for maximum wind
Klaas Voget (G-4) Fanatic R&D Manager: “The latest board outlines have given single fins a new lease of life. Being wider front of center and shorter than traditional pintail shapes, they give the option of riding in a tighter aggressive way, or in the typical drawn-out high-speed style. The PWA tour has a massive range of wind and wave setups so all of our wave boards have to perform in every single location. I wouldn’t go anywhere without a single fin to turn to for either massive jumps or epic down-the-line rides.”

Shaper Sebastian Wenzel’s perfected a range of smooth-sailing compact styles. The optimum blend of speed and carving, slashing and sliding make these our most versatile shapes. Tucked rails, rounded noses, and an ingenious CAD-created rocker line unlock the secrets of early-planing, control and top end. Starting in 75 litre (US box) and also available in 85, 95, 105 and 115 sizes, with Powerbox as standard, the smaller models excel in waves and high winds, while the larger styles focus more on low-end, freestyle and blasting performance, but are certainly no strangers to the surf.
Fanatic’s CAD Master Shaper Sebastian Wenzel “These are amazingly fast and loose shapes. We’ve won countless tests with my CAD-engineered scoop rocker line and full V combination. The versatility is won with nose kick for riding and carving, through a flat spot between the straps and into an optimised tail curve for the best mix of control in almost any use. With smooth noses, smart volume placement and high-apex tucked rails up front, they cut through the water like knives.”
For 2012 we’re offering three top-notch constructions. Select either the featherweight Team Edition (TE) with Carbon/Kevlar deck and Carbon bottom versions, with specialist metallic airbrush finish over Carbon graphics, the Light Finish Custom Wood Sandwich, or the market-leading Oxeon models in 85, 95 or 105 editions. Oxeon’s TeXtreme® Carbon Weave fabric provides the lightest and densest construction available for striking results in finish, weight, durability and stiffness.

Carbon/Kevlar Deck
4 World Titles and countless won tests prove the pedigree of our Freestyle program. But as bigger moves are busted in the intense PWA Arena, the demands on a blockbuster board are off the scale. 3 allnew shorter outlines with wider round noses and thinner tails supply the vital easy handling needed to win. A reverse length concept sees the bigger sizes shorter than the smallest, with all models boosted by the power V form and ultra-slide bottom shape. For 2012 we’ve CAD-formed a double-curved tail deck design for super grip and arch comfort in both air and sliding maneuvers. The fuller nose rails catch less and smoothly blend air moves into sliding tricks for extra flow and style points. Sebastian and the team also thinned the rails between the feet for mid-stance carving control and sweated over a million minor details in the name of victory. The 99 and 109 models come in either Biax Glass Sandwich Light or ultimate Carbon Kevlar Light Team Edition (TE) and the Skate 89 weapon will be available in TE only.
Gollito Estredo (V-01), 4 times PWA Freestyle World Champion (2006, 2008, 2009 & 2010): “The new Skate is a great progression forwards, I like a fast, early planing board for my aggressive style, the new shorter length and rail shapes are perfect for double moves and new tricks. I´m looking forward to defending my title on these shapes, as well as pushing the limits even further in Freestyle windsurfing!”

Comfort’s critical to speed, and our mega-fast Freerace shape makes the most of the race team’s rocker line. With added Power V bottom and double concave nose section for smoothly cutting through chop, the Ray’s compact outlines, with streamlined pintail, and thin round rail sections between the feet make high speed jibes a dream - with plenty of low down power for early planing. Fanatic’s CAD database has groomed 4 slinky models, all easy on your legs, in either eco-friendly visible wood sandwich construction for unbeatable valuefor-money, or LTD Edition with Carbon Kevlar deck (Carbon Kevlar/ Basalt Sandwich Light) and awesome polished carbon rail and bottom optics. All models come with exclusive G10 CNC foiled Choco Fins.
_ PWA Race Team Scoop Rocker Line and Power V bottom for top-end control _ Double Concave Nose Section for early planing and easy handling in chop _ 75° Pintail for drag reduction and jibing _ Thin Rail Section between stance for high speed carves _ Ultimate balance between comfort and performance
Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (ARG-3): “Switching between Formula and PWA racing shapes means I’m always demanding acceleration and low-end power on production Slalom models. And with races in messy water, especially over longer reaches, there’s no question that comfort is king. Combining the Falcon’s rocker line with an easy power V bottom on the new Ray, gives you total concentration over your rivals. That and the thin rounded rails for stressfree jibes prove that easy-to-sail shapes can often be faster.”

New LTD Straps & Pad
5-all new PWA production shapes are unleashed after a total tune-up of every single feature with one single aim in mind – speed. Our fresh Compact Design Concept (CDC) made the 140, 125, and 113 lighter wind models shorter for minimum drag and max lift, and the 89 and 99 lower volume, higher-wind styles longer for security blasting down the strip. Extra width and fuller Comfort Heel Rails around the front feet flow to boxier edges in the straightened-out tails for extra grip, push, comfort, and control in any wind strength. Shaper Sebastian Wenzel’s CAD- analysis produced a unique Scoop Rockerline with a higher entry and shorter Flat Section combined with increased Tail Kick for ultimate no-limits release and a silky easy-to-sail feel. Added Nose-toMid-section V and subtle Double Concaves cut through any sea state more efficiently and on-deck the successful mast recess is lowered further and tweaked to blend smoothly into the volume flow. Produced in Biax Carbon Sandwich Light only for ultimate élite and national level racing weight and stiffness performance.

Two supersonic speed shapes round-off the Falcon range. The all-new 51 and 45 wide rockets sit beside the smallest Falcon 89 Slalom Race board that doubles as a marginal wind option for fast runs at gusty spots. Unlike Slalom boards that hardly sail smooth water, and demand glide and float for maneuvers, the dedicated 45 and 51 have specific bottom shapes and volume distribution for max control for either flat or choppy conditions. The 51’s minimal wetted area can handle a 7.5 on a speed course and its extra tucked rails, recessed deck, and straight outline, slice chop and keep rig flow steady for momentum over longer runs. The 45 is for the days you dream of. Straight planshape, smart ‘Rail Grab’ foot contours and double concave bottom deliver ultimate release and power control so your focus goes to pushing the limits.
_ Extra deep Deck Recess for rig stability _ S-Shape Volume Flow _ All new Feet Grab Rail Shape for max. foot comfort _ 70° Pintail for clean water release and reduced drag area _ V into Double Concave Speed Control Bottom _ Slight Tail Rocker for max. free speed experience _ CAD designed speed curves _ Straight Outlines
Fanatic Team and Top GPS Rider Peter De Wit: “Bearing-off for a top-speed run on the 2012 Falcon feels like a predator’s final swoop for its prey. The Deck Recess are amazingly comfortable. It’s like wearing a sprint shoe with perfectly balanced stance. And thanks to the deck contours the rig stays so static and resistance free. This means full control so your concentration’s only on the run ahead. There’s nothing more addictive than that moment!”
