Before reading through this paragraph we would like to send out a message: even though Völkl has already been awarded with some environmental decorations, we don’t want to suggest we are a “green company” or an “eco brand”. Despite a lot of commitment in this area we know that there is still a long way to go to become really “green”. But we can walk this path faster if you, as a shop or you as a snowboarder, join us. What we can promise you is that our environmental ly-acceptable products often perform better than conventional boards!

Besides the Cashew and Yavana we’ve now added the Vice SQD to our ecological, sustainable production! Instead of a plastic topsheet the boards are equipped with a tear-proof hemp/linen surface and instead of traditional ABS plastic the sidewalls are made of flexible wood (Yavana & Cashew) – this saves 400 grams of plastic! Additionally, we try to reduce the use of resin and other toxic materials to the minimum. And even though the black base might look inconspicuous, it’s pretty shrewd as a good portion of it is made of recycled material, as are the steel edges. Our commitment to the environment brought us the EuroSIMA Ecological Innovation Award in 2010 – a signal that we are on the right path, but at the same time a motivation to develop more eco-friendly alternatives. > Cashew / Yavana / Vice SQD

For support we added a specific hardwood veneer that is not only more eco-friendly than fiberglass, but also provides you with extra pop. When facing bombed out powder landings in the backcountry, the Pin-Tail Shape with its Convex Powder Base does a great job: the shorter contact length with elevated sidewalls offers the board a playful feel, while maximum float helps you stomp almost every trick! For smooth riding as well as great edge hold we perfectly adjusted the sidecut to the rocker and flex of the board. But the Cashew is also a real contender on another chal lenging “terrain” – minimal amounts of resin, a topsheet featuring a hemp/canvas surface as well as a base mainly made of recycled materials strive towards a better environment!

The Dice is specifically designed for riders who like it big. Of course, we didn’t just take a normal board and simply add some extra width; we worked meticulously to achieve the perfect blend. In powder, the re-worked Easy Rocker Shape gives you epic float, while at the same time provid ing you with a playful and forgiving board on the slopes and in the park. Next we had to find the right amount of pop, which we did thanks to the established Völkl Premium Carbon Weave, and in case of icy landings, the Shock Absorber drops in. This is a board that is a little less hard work, but responsive at the same time. Perfect for runs in the backcountry and tricks on the medium line!

We know that a single snowboard can’t save the world, but, as the saying goes, from small acorns do mighty oaks grow. TECHNICAL DATA EFFECTIVE EDGE LENGTH

The length of the edge that is effectively in contact with the snow when the board is turning (widest point of the nose to widest point of the tail).

SETBACK

The entire board’s shape, waist and binding insert positions have been shifted from the centre towards the rear of the board. Freestyle boards have minimal setback or none at all (e.g. Squad Line: 0 mm). When the binding position is centered, the nose and tail are of the same length and flex. Freeride boards feature a greater setback (e.g. Selecta 175: 50 mm). More setback enhances board control and powers edge grip at maximum speed. A longer nose also enables more flotation in powder.

STANCE

By having different binding insert positions, the rider may fine-tune the board’s riding characteristics. Freestylers usually prefer a flatter stance angle of +15° to +21° on the front foot and -3° to -18° on the back foot. SIDECUTS Our boards feature different sidecuts depending on the terrain they are designed for. The special thing is that contrary to a radial sidecut, a Völkl sidecut consists of several different blended sidecuts (therefore the indicated radial sidecut is just a reference value!) Benefits compared to a simple radial sidecut are: > Edge pressure is perfectly distributed along the entire edge length in carving turns. > It is easy to actively determine the turning radius by minimal shifting of weight (a conventional radial sidecut determines the radius of the turn). > The nose is easy to control and does not dig into the snow. PIN-TAIL SHAPE

ROCKER SHAPE CONCEPT / REVERSE CAMBER “Rocker” is a well-established term among surfers, snow boarders and wakeboarders. It describes a board shape that incorporates a negative / reverse camber. Boards with a “conventional” camber feature two contact points when the board is lying flat on the ground, one in the nose and the other one in the tail. Due to the Rocker Shape’s negative camber the board touches the ground at one point, which is in the middle of the board. The nose and tail are floating in the air. The length of this flat section between the bindings of freestyle and freeride boards varies according to the shape profile and intended use. As early as the 80s the ski and snowboard industry were experimenting with the first construction attempts of such a shape. Völkl Snowboards deliver an entire concept behind the current trend; a concept that is based on state-of-theart laboratory tests and years of experience and know-how. In theory, a Rocker or “Reverse Camber” Shape provides better float in powder and is generally easy to turn and playful. However, if you just try to re-bend a conventional board shape, the board loses its dampening properties and edge hold. This is why all other parameters have to be re-adjusted, too. 3-SECTION-FLEX

The flex has been adjusted in three different sections, making the board a bit stiffer along the nose, medium stiff in the middle and stiff along the tail. There is no need for the board to flex a lot in the nose section – the Rocker Shape is enough, it enhances the board’s gliding characteristics in powder. This special construction prevents the board from “over-flexing”. It’ll excel anywhere, even in difficult snow conditions, providing precise control. The flex pattern and distribution of flex intensity is tuned individually for every board with Rocker Shape.

ROCKER-SPECIFIC SIDECUTS

Depending on the range of use, the specific adaptation of sidecuts emphasizes the board’s individual riding characteristics. Nose & tail become a bit wider and the sidecuts in these areas are equipped with smaller radii. Therefore Völkl boards with Rocker offer amazing edge pressure and the same grip as boards with conventional camber on icy slopes.

The core of all Rocker boards has been worked on in com bination with the 3-Section-Flex. The thickness of the wood core has been reduced a bit in between the bindings to give perfectly smooth flex characteristics. Below the bindings, towards the nose and the tail, the core has been thickened a bit compared to last year, which makes the flex a bit stiffer in those areas. The result? No “over-flexing”, but more pop and perfect response when landing on the tail.

LOW TIP SHAPE

The stronger the Rocker, the flatter the nose. In order to avoid the nose of the board catching into deep snow, our powder masterpieces don’t need a nose with a strong concave radius – the Rocker Shape is enough to prevent the board from digging in the snow. The Selecta and Cashew’s flat concave radius of the nose makes for con siderably less snow resistance but a lot more speed in the powder. Freestyle weapons like the Squad, Jibster SQD and Impress SQD also benefit from the new Rocker Shape for powder landings.

CAMBER-SPECIFIC SIDECUTS

“Camber” describes a board shape that incorporates a classic / positive camber. These boards feature two contact points when the board is lying flat on the ground: one in the nose and the other one in the tail. In between those contact points, the board is bowed providing the board with a certain snap that helps cope with the forces un leashed during a ride. A strong camber provides more edgehold on icy slopes; a smoother camber makes the board more responsive. Camber boards offer very direct power transmission and great rides when it’s all about speed.

Pro Camber

These boards have a very strong camber and are best for advanced riders who aim for aggressive riding and perfect edge-hold (Coal). But they are also easy to control and offer direct response as well as amazing pop on huge booters (Squad Prime). > Coal Race / Coal XT / Squad Prime

Freestyle Camber

This shape combines a medium camber with early rise nose & tail. The short contact length makes the board forgiving and allows its easy-to-turn characteristics, which can be of great advantage in the park. Easy Camber

A smooth camber with early rise nose & tail. The appar ently shorter contact length makes learning turns as easy as 1-2-3, but on icy slopes you get first class edge-hold and direct riding characteristics. This is the perfect alternative to a Rocker Shape: not too direct, but also not too playful. > Melody / Dash

FLEX Multiple components determine a board’s flex: initial tension, adjustment and sidecut of the core, torsion (depending on materials used in the upper and lower belt), setback and stance. Building hard, stiff boards is not a real challenge for a snowboard manufacturer. Stiff boards do not automatically make for a smoother ride and better control! In reality, stiff boards are unforgiving and need to be ridden very aggressively. This becomes most evident on challenging terrain and in the park. In our boards the know-how is reflected in a softer flex pattern, which guarantees optimal torsional rigidity and ultimate stability. All of these put together make for more playful boards offering agile riding performance and maximum response power. In addition, we have reduced the wood core’s thickness and reinforced it with ultralight materials, such as carbon, aramid or titanium.

The fiberglass weave leaves its mark on the board’s flex and torsion properties. The choice of weave (direction of individual fibers in relation to one another) and its thickness is selected individually for each length of board. Another decisive factor in the degree of flex and torsion is the distance between the upper and lower layer (degree and variation of thickness throughout the board). The thicker the board and the more layers it has, the stiffer the flex.

V-FLEX FIBERGLASS WEAVE INLAY

The V-Flex weave is a triaxial fiberglass weave with increased fiber density. The special V-form reinforces the area around the bindings, producing improved flex and torsion properties. P-Tex 20188 is a sintered, ultra-high-molecular, lowpressure polyethylene with a unique grain structure and a high carbon percentage. Its high rate of electrical- and thermal conductivity was specially developed for racing.
