Speaking of quality tournaments, anyone who managed to watch the recent Ricoh Women’s British Open were treated to a fabulous showcase of the growing strength and depth of talent in ladies professional golf. This has been recognised by the Andalucia Tourism Board, whose close links to the Ladies European Tour have also brought about the opportunity for Eat Golf! to be involved with an LET Pro-Am set to take place in 2009. There is a lot to be organised, but as long time supporters of the Ladies European Tour and golf in Andalucia, we will do our utmost to ensure that this is a spectacular and memorable event. We’ll give out more information as things develop - in the meantime let us know if you are interested in participating either as a player or a sponsor. Back to the present, and we’ve got all the usual mix of features for your reading pleasure - from Ian Poulter’s bright and colourful summer fashion line to an in-depth interview with Morgan Pressel. MORGAN PRESSEL 025
Morgan, what are your first impressions of Ireland? The weather was a lot better yesterday. It’s beautiful. I had a lot of fun on the golf course and spent some time in Dublin last night and spent too much money so it’s been a good trip. You’ve played one Solheim Cup, in Sweden. What are your first impressions of Killeen Castle? It looks beautiful. It looks like a really first class spot. I think it will be a great host to the 2011 Solheim Cup. When we played in Sweden we had a lot of fun and even though it’s overseas we still had a great time. Hopefully we can come back overseas and win again. What is the strength of the team? We all get along really well. We had a great team last year and it’s a week where you get to know all the people you play with every week on tour. You get to bond and it’s a different experience to any other week that we play. Are you pleased to be here in Ireland? Yes. It’s my first trip to Ireland and I’m definitely pleased to be playing in this event. I hope it’s a good week. It should be a lot of fun. I think it’s a great golf course. It’s a links and I’ve only played a few like that, I think Royal Lytham and St Andrews are the only two like that I’ve played. It seems pretty straight forward. There aren’t as many tricks to it. You’ve got to hit good shots and play the wind properly. It is a links course… how do you prepare for this? I’m excited to be here playing in the ladies’ Irish Open and it’s a different style of golf to what I’ve been used to at home. I’m ready for the challenge, especially with the weather like this today. How are you with playing under the wind? We will see! I guess I will learn. Are you working on any particular shots? It’s just you have to make more of an effort to control the ball, hold more shots against the wind or play them with the wind, hit some punches and things like that. Just a little bit different in that sense. The golf course didn’t
seem to be that firm whereas last year at St Andrews was really firm. The greens were holding pretty well and you can putt from just about anywhere from off those greens. The fairway is very similar to the greens in that they are a similar grass and it’s very thin as most links courses are. It’s a pretty straight forward golf course; there are not too many tricks to it which is why I like the golf course. I thought St Andrews had a few too many tricks. You relied on so many lucky bounces. It doesn’t seem to be quite that much here. How has your form been over the season? It’s been up and down. I played okay last week. I was in there and gave myself enough opportunities, just didn’t hit it quite close enough and make enough putts. That’s what it usually comes down to: who can make the most putts. Hopefully this week I can make them all. I’ve had tournaments this year where I’ve putted well. I’ve gone three and a half tournaments now without a three-putt. I worked really hard on my putting this off season and it’s come around and been a lot better. I had a rough stretch where I didn’t putt well so it’s been a lot better. How difficult was it to be such an achiever at such a young age? I didn’t really think about it like that when I was young. I think that what really gave me an opportunity to look back was looking at Alexis Thompson who qualified for the women’s open last year at 12. She broke my record by a few months or by however much it was. I thought “That was me!” I was that age. Not that I’m any old veteran now but I definitely had plenty of experience. Do you value that now? For me, it was never a question. It wasn’t so much a dream that it was a reality that I would some day play on the LPGA Tour. Just from having my uncle coming from a tennis back ground. He was a professional tennis player so seeing a professional athlete who was sixth in the world at one point, that close, I said: “It’s not that far-fetched,” whereas a lot of kids watch professional athletes on TV and that’s all they see. They don’t see how to become one and what to do. It was so close to me that it was: “Of course I can be on the LPGA Tour.” I knew that I just had to work really hard.
026 FEATURES
You could have been a tennis star… I could have been. Now the girls are so big. They’re tall. I’m still a tennis fan and I have some friends out there. How did it affect you? I was so young that I didn’t pay any attention to it. I seem to be doing okay. How happy are you with your first two seasons as a pro? I’ve had two decent years. I had one spectacular event last year. I had a second this year and a second last year. I’ve had some great events and I’m just waiting for another. On Tour the girls are so good that you really have to be on your game for two or three rounds and you’ve got to have a lot of luck too. There is luck involved. How do you start thinking about a target, in terms of x number of majors? I only have one so I’m waiting for number two and after number two we can talk about number three.I think that you do even whether consciously or subconsciously build your game around the majors. When you build your schedule you do look at the stretch of tournaments around the majors. You don’t want the major to be on the end of a six week stretch. You want the major to be in the middle. You want to play into the major and peak away from the major. Some players will even take weeks off after majors because they are so grinding. With the way that our season is set up, this last week was the first week I’ve played after a major I think since I’ve been a pro. We don’t usually play the week after a major. But when you’re playing well you might as well continue to play. You try to play around the majors, definitely. You play around the biggest events on the schedule, whether they are Evian or the British. They are some of the biggest tournaments on tour that players want to be well prepared for. What is your schedule now? I’m here until the British. I don’t like being a tourist. I hate being a tourist but I’m going to go to London, play a couple of days in Sunningdale and probably shop. Grandma wants to do all the tourist things but I’ll probably see the castle from a distance. She’ll probably drag me but I hate being in the middle of the touristy areas. I like pretending I belong even though I have no clue what I’m doing.

On The 2011 Solheim Cup venue… From what I’ve seen in terms of the clubhouse and a little bit of the golf course. There is a lot that goes into a Solheim Cup, with the players, the sponsors and PING and Solheim, and all of their corporate sponsors, then we have our families and all of our support team, this place is going to be able to host all that. It looks like the golf course is great which is probably number one most important thing. You’ve always got to worry about the amenities. The clubhouse is beautiful and there is plenty of space for all of that. I’m sure building the hotel will give us even more space in terms of ballroom space and things like that for events that they have. You had a great start to your Solheim Cup career. It’s fun. It’s the best. I love The Solheim Cup. Regardless of what happened it was a fantastic week and when you think about it, I think of the week and the time that we spent in the team room, the putts that I made that were important. When I mention it to anybody else they say the weather was so bad, and it was but I don’t even
remember that because it was such a great event. There are so many things that overshadow the horrible weather that we didn’t care that it was the worst weather that we have ever played in. It was so bad; one morning they had to postpone it because of the wind; it was so windy and rainy. One morning I woke up and it sounded like there was a hurricane outside: just howling wind. One of the caddies went out the glass doors of the common room and we couldn’t get the doors back open. This is a good time to be a young American golfer, isn’t it? Well Paula and I are good friends. We all get along very well and a lot of that is from Solheim. They are the type of events where you really can bond with your team and you get to find a lot out about the people you compete with. Is there any pressure? I don’t want to lose any matches. The biggest thing that they told us last time, they had Joanne Carner and Judy Rankin and Nancy Lopez and Joanne Carner told us to put Chap Stick on our teeth because our mouth was going to be so dry. Granted Natalie hit the first
MORGAN PRESSEL 029
shot and I didn’t hit it, but even on Sunday I just wasn’t as nervous as everybody told me I was going to be. Juli and I talked about that later and she said when we used to play years ago we would talk about how nervous we were going to be on the first tee and you young guys are like: “Get me to the first tee and let’s go play.” It’s like horses out of the gate. I had so much energy on Monday that Betsy was like: “You have to calm down.” I was so excited. Representing your country is just awesome. We are all just playing now and trying to make the team.
I hope that they can play well. We are going to give it our best and I’m sure they will put up a good fight.
What do the Europeans need to do to beat the US next time? I think a big part of it will depend on Annika. I think that what will happen there, I am assuming that she will not play as she is moving on from competitive play, I won’t say retiring because she doesn’t like that word. I was talking about that with Suzann and she said Annika won’t play next year. I am sure there are plenty of young European women who wish more than anything else to be on that team. We will see some changes in terms of the players on the European team in the next few years.
Who is your coach? Martin Hall. He is English. We have been working together for 11 years.
How many tournaments do you play in a year? About 25. I am on the road for seven weeks. This is my fourth of seven - I go home for one day and then I’m on the road again. I’ve got all my appointments booked. I’m going to get my facial, my nails, my hair cut. Normally when I am home I am busier then when I’m on the road. I do all the stuff that I don’t do on the road.
Do you have a psychologist? No, we’re working on it. A lot is probably from my grandfather who raised my uncle in professional tennis and from my mother who was very competitive. For more information about the Ladies European Tour visit: www.ladieseuropeantour.com

Pro-am Confessions of a Putterless Hooker By Dennis Shaw l PGAs of Europe
PGAs of EUROPE
Whenever our chief executive, Ian Randell, informs me about a pro-am event that the PGAs of Europe is to organise, or endorse, I find it difficult not to picture in advance those comparatively inexperienced golfers who will be involved for the first time.
Among the 120 amateurs who play in, say, a tournament, comprising 40 teams of one PGA professional and three handicap players each, there will be the odd one or two who are scheduled to play alongside a professional for the first time.
Flashback some 25-odd years to the Midland PGA Patrons’ Pro-am at Glen Gorse, in Leicestershire. As their Press Office at the time, yours truly was invited to play in a team with a very good pro, from Walsall GC at that time, named James Annable.
By now a light fall of rain had transformed itself into a monsoon and, some four shots later, when I arrived on the green, I reached for my putter...into an empty space. “I was practising at home last night...” I explained weakly. “We’d had this new carpet fitted, and...”
The mix is, inevitably, usually about the same.
“The feeling of gross inadequacy which the week-end golfer gets when cajoled, coerced or chainganged into a pro-am is impossible to describe,” I wrote as a then 24-handicapper, who had just been cut to 23. “ However, I will try...
With an air of resignation, James said kindly: “No worries. We’ll be near the pro-shop at the next hole. They’ll stretch the rules and lend you one.”
Very low handicap players of all ages who have been there, done it, are confident of their game and have the collection of prizes to prove it. Mid-handicappers who, likewise, are experienced in such affairs and simply relish the occasion in the full knowledge that they might just get lucky by drawing one of the better PGA professionals who is almost guaranteed to shoot a sub-par round along with two other steady scorers. Long suffering high handicappers who have made mugs of themselves often enough to no longer care very much. And the others... In this latter category, I can sympathise absolutely with the lonely few newcomers, because on this occasion I happen to have ‘been there, done it’ and, to prove it, still have the embarrassing memories to involuntarily flood to mind whenever the term ‘pro-am’ arises.
“Picture yourself as a motorway navvy with two left feet, both clad in wellies, being asked to compete in the final of Come Dancing...” The sad tale then unfolded... We started at the 17th and, after the shotgun had sounded, one of our group was half-way through his back swing when there was this loud beep-beep-beep... the wake-up call on my watch was going off at the wrong time. The player duffed his drive and I can still recall his steely stare as I strove to convey that ‘nothing to do with me, mate’ attitude.
Needless to see, now screwed up, with embarrassment trebled, my golf was awful. Yet, some holes into the round, I can’t remember which one, I fired a magnificent second shot with a five wood, over a high edge, onto a grassy hump at the edge of the green after almost hooking my drive out of bounds. At last, music to my ears, my companions shouted; “ Good SHOT, Dennis...” Accepted at last, and settling down, I then played a lovely little chip to a yard or so from the hole.” Par nett birdie coming up. Strolling across the green, all suave, as
“The feeling of gross inadequacy which the weekend golfer gets when cajoled, coerced or chainganged into a pro-am is impossible to describe.”

though this were commonplace I spotted, and picked up, a rusty, bent pitch repairer just lying there. “One of the group in front must have dropped this,” I remarked, all chatty, to James. “You had better put it back where you found it...,” he said, smiling with his mouth only. “It’s my ball marker...” Later, as we walked off at the end, and as an attempt at humour to conceal that feeling of inadequacy I wrote about earlier, I remarked: “Trouble is I don’t think I can play off my new handicap...” That, equally, went down like a lead balloon. Such a gruesome series of ‘misfortunes’ was, of course almost too bad to be true, though it did happen, and the story probably enlivened many a 19th hole ‘inquest’ in the ensuing months, or maybe years. Well, I mean, 25 years on I’m still telling it myself. It’s not all bad for newcomers on the pro-am front, however, as mercifully I can also report.
Not long after that, in the Midland Open Championship Pro-am, again run by the Midland PGA, I was paired in the Press team with another good pro, John King of Worksop, (who shared in the early development of Lee Westwood and many more excellent golfers), Derek Lawrenson of the Daily Mail and a local magazine publisher, Mike Shanley. At the first hole, at The Vale, near Evesham, Worcestershire, I scored a par nett birdie, repeated the dose via a long putt at the last, with several similar contributions in between, and we went on stage to receive the winners’ prizes. When that happens in a proam the high handicapper can feel like a ‘proper’ golfer, if only for a short time. Currently the PGAs of Europe endorses annually, the Avea Kempinski Pro-am and Beko Classic, in Turkey, and the Aegean Airlines Pro-am on the Greek island of Crete while others
are always likely to be staged in the association’s team and individual championships. There is no better way to promote golf in regions seeking to raise their profile. Nor are there many other sports, if any, where professionals and amateurs can perform together side by side in the same team in so thoroughly enjoyable, though sometimes embarrassing, a manner. Though I do have some tips to offer the amateurs: switch off your watch alarm, (and, nowadays, leave your mobile phone in the car), count your clubs before you start, and don’t pick up anything on the green except your ball. Just imagine picking up a stray euro. And it proved to be Monty’s ball marker...

draw & fade By Anna Rawson l LET & LPGA Tour Player
It is very important for me to be able to work the ball. No shot is ever a straight shot, so I like to be able to have options with working the ball both ways. This is especially true on Sundays, when the pins are tucked in on both the left and right corners.
In order to draw the ball (right to left), I aim a little right at setup and swing the club inside the line. On the follow-through, I then continue to swing inside out and finish with the club lower to the ground. When fading the ball (left to right), I aim a little left at setup and swing outside the line. On the followthrough, I try to stay on top of the ball and finish with my hands high. Depending on how severe the fade or draw, I may even change my grip. It’s best to experiment different degrees of draws and fades on the range. Then you will have confidence on the course.

A lot of golfers address the ball incorrectly with the driver.
drive SET-UP To
By Sam Pleshette l PGA Professional
Whenever I see golfers who refuse to carry a driver, always hitting irons and fairway woods from the tee, I can’t help but feel they are missing out on one of the biggest joys of playing golf crushing long, straight drives!
If more golfers paid attention to the setup necessary for hitting the driver, they would get a lot more satisfaction out of their game, and even lower their handicap. Why wouldn’t you want at least 20 more yards from the tee? Pictured here I am demonstrating how a lot of golfers tend to address the ball incorrectly with the driver. Although the ball is positioned towards my left heel, my stance is too narrow. My weight is favouring the left foot, causing my chest (your swings low point) and head to align over the ball, and the shoulders to become too level. All this creates a descending angle of attack which results in a disastrous mix of skied, low launching or sliced drives.
✘
SET-UP TO DRIVE 045
✔
1) Tee-up with at least half the ball above the clubhead to allow space for it to ascend into the ball. Position the ball forward in the stance.
Good driving starts with a good set-up...
5
The key to hitting the driver successfully is to strike the ball with a slightly ascending clubhead through impact. Sounds easy - but to achieve this the body has to be in the correct position at setup.
2) Make a wide stance to create a shallow angle of attack. 3) Ensure your weight favours the right side.
4
So follow these tips and start reaching for the driver out on the golf course. Get yourself into a better position at address - stay behind the ball at impact - and enjoy longer walks from the tee box!
4) Keep your chest (the point where the swing bottoms out) and head behind the ball. 5) Your shoulders should be pointing to the sky. I call this the “launch” position - and it is very much the position that all great drivers of the ball get into.

CLUB FITTING 047
Summary of Fitting 1: If you missed Part 1, you can read the full article in the features section on www.eat-golf.com Nick went to David to find out if changing his clubs could improve his consistency. David pointed out that with his present clubs, Nick was being forced into a bad posture position, causing him to take away the club on the inside with the club crossing over the line at the top of the backswing. This was causing Nick to hit a two way miss - either a hook left, or a block to the right. David’s solution was to build Nick a set of irons which would be shorter than he presently had, giving him an improved posture and take away. The aim was to give Nick a more consistent shot pattern, leading to a more reliable game.
The hook had come from the club being too long for him, which resulted in an upright lie angle, and the block shot was his reaction to that. When Nick arrived for his second fitting I had 4 possible club heads for him to try, all with the same specification. Nick quickly eliminated two of the club heads because the shape or cosmetics were not pleasing to his eye. It is important that when viewing the club from above you like how it looks (pictured top).
With the club being much shorter, we had now corrected his posture which allowed the club to swing up on the correct plane. After a couple of shots with the flatter club (1.25 inches shorter makes the club play flatter) he realised there was no danger of the hook - so he started swinging correctly on the way through.
Nick then started to hit with the two clubs he had selected. I asked him to give me some feedback on headweight and overall weight whilst he was hitting.
Nick had a two way miss in the first fitting - a hook (spinning left) or a block (straight right). The hook had come from the club being too long for him, which resulted in an upright lie angle, and the block shot was his reaction to that.
In the first fitting Nick had seen how a better posture had changed his swing positions. Now we were going to change his shot pattern, and how he pictured his shots.
Now Nick was hitting shots without a hook I was able to make him swing the club through impact and

I was able to make him swing the club through impact and back to the inside with the shaft working around his body. back to the inside with the shaft working around his body (Nick was afraid of this movement before). The result was a ball starting just to the left of the target and fading slightly back. His bad shot had become a ball fading a little too much instead of a 30m block or hook with a 6 iron as before. Nick was starting to favour one club, but he was unsure if he could feel the head enough (swingweight). I therefore increased the head weight and he did prefer the feel. Swingweight is always an issue when building clubs as short as Nick needed, and the extra head weight had given the club a more
acceptable balance. As Nick was no longer hitting the hook spin or the odd thin shot, I could see that the lie angle had flattened sufficiently. The sole of the club was returning flush with the floor, which gave Nick the confidence to stay in posture through impact and strike down. We had reached the point where Nick understood how he and his new club should work together - making practice worthwhile. All that needed to be decided was the Set Make Up and the building process could begin. Next issue I will take Nick through the various aspects of selecting the best clubs to make up his set, as well as explaining some of the club building processes.
Nick’s comments: Of the four clubs that David presented to me, I felt that two of the heads were oversized and unappealing to my eye. I also preferred the narrower top line of the smaller heads, which was less distracting. Having hit shots with both clubs, the Nakashima stood out for me as having a much more solid feel at impact than the others, and I chose to progress the fitting with them. With David monitoring my swing plane and swing movements, along with some tinkering of the weight and lie angle I was now hitting a consistent fade, and this was all the evidence I needed to be convinced we should build a full set with these specifications.

GOLF FITNESS
Water does the Trick! By Juan Barberis l Titleist速 Certified Golf Fitness Teacher
Are you an avid swimmer or comfortable in the water apart from being a golfer? If so, I have excellent news for you! Exercising in a swimming pool - both in the shallow end as well as in the deep end - have been proven to be an excellent means of attaining golf fitness and improving your overall health. The key is simply to understand the muscles that you need to strengthen and balance. As discussed in my article last issue, the Titleist速 Performance Institute has deemed that the most important muscles in golf are the glutes, or butt muscles. The second most important set of muscles are the abdominals. Complementing these two sets of muscles and providing you stability in your core are your quads, hamstrings, obliques, lats, and pects. These are the muscles that must be strong and balanced both side-to-side and front-to-back, to provide you with a platform for consistency in your golf game. Since working-out on machines properly is time consuming, many clients opt for complementing their fitness facility workouts with exercising in a swimming pool.
If you are open to venturing in this direction, then I recommend that you follow the sequence below in order to make your workout both efficient and effective: 1) Find a swimming pool that has both a shallow end, less than one metre in depth, as well as a deep end, greater than 2.5 metres, that is not crowded and where you can perform your exercises without being disturbed or disturbing others. 2) Start and remain in the shallow end by taking forty to fifty large strides or lunges from one side of the pool to the other while stretching and strengthening your glutes, hamstrings, and quads. Following this sequence, take about forty to fifty strides in the shallow end swinging your fully-extended arms with open palms forward and backwards. This sequence will strengthen and stretch your shoulders, back, and chest - which must be stable and have the proper range of motion to play golf. 3) Now that you have completed the warm-up exercises, you are ready for deep water treading. If you are in good physical shape
Exercising in a swimming pool has been proven to be an excellent means of attaining golf fitness and improving your overall health.
and are proficient in deep water then you can perform the following exercises without a floating device. Otherwise, I strongly recommend that you use a floatation device around your waist or wear a life jacket. The floatation device should barely hold you up - so that a little bit of leg and arm action is necessary to keep you afloat. Start with a three minute sequence focused on your lower body. The first minute move your legs in a scissors-like manner; the second minute pretend that you are riding a bicycle, and the third minute conduct straight leg clamps towards your midsection. Be sure that you are maintaining tension in your lower body muscles throughout the movement. As you become more proficient treading water, use less and less floatation, incorporate arm movements in various directions, and work your way up to treading water for at least a half-hour. Water exercises are often overlooked in most training programs, even though they are an excellent way to incorporate natural movements of your legs and arms. By conducting the above sequence once per week or three times per month you will improve your stability, balance, and mobility. Your health will improve and so will your golf game. Remember, water does the trick! Yours in health.

Golf & Meditation By Jayne Storey I Chi-Power GOLF™
Scientists study it. Doctors recommend it. Olympic athletes practice it. It is being offered in schools, prisons, hospitals, law firms and corporate offices. Millions of ordinary people do it every day to reduce stress, increase energy, make better use of time and solve problems. So, what is meditation? Why does it work? And how can you use it to improve your golf?
CHI-POWER GOLF 053
What Is Meditation? Commonly known as Zen, this is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese ch’an - derived originally from the Sanskrit dhyana - which may be translated as meditation or contemplation. Very simply, meditation is the art of sitting quietly, doing nothing but focusing on your breathing. Of course, this requires a certain amount of discipline, but just by setting aside 5 to 10 minutes each day to stop your internal chatter, you will gain untold benefits in the way of health, relaxation, increased energy and the ability to focus your mind on the task in front of you i.e. - playing your best golf. Why Does It Work? The brain undergoes subtle changes during meditation. Research shows that meditation can actually train the mind and reshape the brain. Tests using the most sophisticated imaging techniques suggest that meditation can actually reset the brain, changing the point at which a traffic jam, for instance, sets the blood boiling. What the scientists discovered through these studies is that with enough practice, the neurons in the brain will re-shape themselves, and many parts of the brain responsible for taking in information, actually slow down or go off-line altogether during meditation, enabling the practitioner to have a more positive experience of themselves and detach from negative feelings and situations.
Contentment and a real sense of inner peace are the natural result. Studies on meditation moved into the 21st Century when, in March 2000, the Dalai Lama met with Western-trained psychologists and neuroscientists to organise studies of accomplished meditation masters (Buddhist monks) ...and guess what? It seems that regular practice of meditation results in a pronounced change in brainwave patterns, shifting from the beta waves of aroused, conscious thought to the alpha and theta waves that dominate the brain during periods of deep relaxation. How Will Golfers Benefit? It is well known that athletes performing at the very peak of their abilities can also experience an increased level of this type of brain wave activity, which means that the monks and elite athletes have something in common - that is, a state of mind which any experienced golfer can re-create, simply by practising meditation. The experience of peak performance is sometimes known as “the sporting zone” or flowstate, a state of consciousness where athletes describe their actions as automatic, instinctive and intuitive - yet they often don’t know how they created the phenomena (it typically, ‘just happens’) and they also don’t know how to re-create the experience. However, studies confirm that regular practice of meditation can help to unlock that elusive doorway
in the mind by creating the right internal conditions necessary for the zone to manifest. The Zone Research shows there are 3 core components needed, for an athlete to enter the zone. These are: SKILL + PASSION + IMMERSION. You may also be familiar with the ‘Inner Game’ model, which states that peak performance is a natural result of talent minus interference. The zone is a natural state available to any golfer who is passionate about their game, who has the necessary technical skills to play the game and who is able to become totally immersed in the game, one shot at a time, one hole at a time. However, in order to become immersed in the game, the conscious mind needs to be anchored in a natural process - like focusing on the breath. That way, the skills, strategy and techniques you have learned in training, can be allowed to manifest without desire, doubt or anxiety creeping in to wreck your game-plan. Put another way, the zone is a state in which your conscious mind/superego stops telling you why you can’t do something and lets the rest of your mind/body get on with it! Stages Of Meditation It is important to find which of the following stages work best for you, but it is equally important to give each stage a proper chance and not to move on purely through
054 YOUR GAME
boredom or lack of discipline. As a general guide, try to practice each stage for around four to six weeks. For each stage, breathe in and out thorough the nose, making each breath long, smooth and silent. Stage One: Watching Sit quietly for five or ten minutes and simply be aware of yourself breathing in and breathing out. Stage Two: Counting On the first breath, count one silently as you exhale, count two on the second exhalation, count three on the third exhalation and so on up to a count of ten following ten separate breaths and exhalations. When you reach ten, start counting from one again. Stage Three: Silent mantra As you inhale, silently say to yourself “I am breathing in” and as you exhale, silently say to yourself “I am breathing out”. If you prefer, you can shorten this silent mantra to either of the following - “breathing in / breathing out” or simply “in / out” Stage Four: Empty and Full When you have inhaled simply pause for a moment and be aware of the feeling of fullness – when you finish exhaling simply pause for a moment and be aware of the feeling of emptiness. Continue breathing in and out and maintain your awareness of the spaces between each in and out breath. Stage Five: T’an tien Breathe in through the nose and when you exhale concentrate on pushing some of the breath down into the T’an tien (located approximately 2” below the navel). Of course, the breath does not actually move to the lower abdomen, but concentration on the T’an tien will help you to produce a very composed and concentrated state of mind and experience more physical stability.
www.chipowersports.com
What To Expect Over time, you will gradually find your breathing becomes deeper and slower. You may also feel heat in the lower abdomen. If at any time during your practice, you feel dizzy or light-headed, simply stop training and rest quietly for a while. Continue the next day. Over time you will find yourself getting physically and mentally stronger and feeling more relaxed. Home Programme A good time to practice meditation is first thing in the morning before breakfast. This helps to energise you and set you on the right track for the rest of the day. It can then be practiced at various times during the day for 5 or 10 minutes or for a ‘short burst’ of a minute or two or even a breath or two. Do not look for the ‘perfect’ place, which you may never find; sitting on the edge of the bath is fine, if that’s the only quiet place in the house!
It may be particularly useful to use stage five T’an tien breathing, which will help to centre you physically and emotionally and produce a strong feeling of stability in your lower body. Some athletes have even reported that this stage of meditation makes them feel more powerful. When you have finished your shot and are walking to the ball again, stay focused on your breathing. You may even like to match the rhythm of your breathing to your foot-steps. Introducing Distractions Once you can meditate peacefully without distractions, try to introduce some background irritations. For instance, you can try meditating while the kids are getting ready for bed or while the radio is on or with a clock ticking in the room or with your partner tapping away at the computer in the background.
In Training & Competition Use short bursts as you drive and then walk to the club house or changing area, and while lacing up your golf shoes and putting on your glove. The night before a competition it is usually quite difficult to sleep. Instead of lying there worrying, get out of bed and practice meditation for 5 or 10 minutes and restore a calm state of mind. In the morning, practice meditation for 5 or 10 minutes immediately upon getting out of bed. From then on do short bursts of meditation to help maintain calmness and focus until the competition. As the competition approaches, the ‘bursts’ of meditation should be more frequent. Any panic or negative thoughts can be controlled in this way.
Also, try meditating while you are physically uncomfortable, for instance while you are feeling cold, hungry or while kneeling on the floor. This way you are introducing mild annoyances, which you can learn to ignore, while you continue to pay attention to your breathing.

maximum impact, and to write the letters as large as he could, he abbreviated the names of the balls. Dunlops were shortened to ‘Duns’, Penfolds became ‘Pens’ and Titleists became... well, let’s just say the lady captain was less than impressed. In those days, the golf business mirrored the sport itself - clubby and amateurish, but also fun. Fast-forward 30 years to the early years of the new millennium and, in my opinion (I was business editor of Golf Weekly), the golf industry, especially in the UK, still lagged behind in many areas. Odd, really, when you consider the vast amount of sponsorship money spent by big businesses and brands from outside of golf, trying to tap the typically affluent consumer associated with golf. However, a change is now taking place. In the world of golf retail, club management, golf course marketing and golf development, there are signs that the golf industry is finally shaking off its amateurish past and getting down to business in a professional manner, albeit slowly. Take golf retail, for example. Although the PGA has transformed itself and provides excellent training and continuous professional development for its members, there is still a significant proportion of on-course retailers who probably wouldn’t survive in business if they were on the high street. The smart retailers, however, are joining buying groups such as TGI Golf that not only negotiate the best buying terms from leading brands, but provide on-site professional retail development support to help proprietors manage and run their businesses to the highest standards. As Parnell Reilly,
captain of the PGA and a member of TGI Golf once told me, ‘the day you think you know it all is the day you start going backwards.’ The Club Managers Association of Europe (the title of ‘club secretary’ is rapidly going out of fashion, such is its resonance with the old, amateurish way) is now offering experienced club managers the opportunity to gain a qualification which has long been seen by American club managers as the ultimate badge of professionalism - Certified Club Manager (CCM). Accountants, lawyers and other professionals all have their qualifications - why shouldn’t a golf club manager aspire to the highest standards and achieve a benchmark that will increase their currency and progress their career? The idea of finding the best man or woman for the club manager’s job has been - and still is, for many clubs - an alien concept. The club committee always knew best. But as costs rise, membership dwindles and green fees fall short of targets, does that manager have the experience and professionalism to successfully make the business work? Many golf courses are discovering the answer to this question right now. At the recent KPMG Golf Business Forum in Ireland, I met Stewart McNair, a highly successful search and selection expert whose business has been retained by the likes of HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and Citigroup to recruit high-profile CEOs and chairmen all over the world. Now, as co-founder of Colt Mackenzie McNair, he is bringing those same skills to the golf business, recruiting executives for golf businesses, including new resorts and developments all over Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Amazingly, no other
executive search and selection practice is working in golf in this way - and there are not enough skilled professionals in golf to fill the jobs, so CMM is bringing in new people from outside golf. It’s a sign just how far behind golf has been. And then there’s KPMG, the globally respected provider of audit, tax and advisory services. Just a few years ago, KPMG’s Budapest practice, which had started to provide economic planning for new golf developments in the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe, realised that no one was doing what it was doing in golf, so it expanded to work on projects across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMA). First it launched the Golf Business Forum, bringing together the most influential businesses and individuals in the golf business and then, in 2006, it published the first Golf Benchmark Survey, aimed at showing golf courses in the EMA region, how their business performance compared to that of their competitors. As Ken Schofield, former Executive Director of the European Tour, has said, the Golf Benchmark Survey is, ‘taking the guesswork out of the golf business.’ The 2008 GBS is currently being compiled and will be published later this year. (Visit www.golfbenchmark.com) So, the golf business is slowly becoming more professional - but it is an evolution rather than a revolution, and there is a way to go yet. As for my Dad, he doesn’t do posters any more - he’s built himself a professional looking website. And no, there are no pictures of Titleists on it.

With this year’s Volvo Masters the 21st and final event in golf’s longest running sponsorship, Spain remains assured of its place at golf’s top table as the revamped Volvo World Match Play Championship moves from Wentworth to Finca Cortesin at Casares from 2009 onwards.
Golf in Andalucia is certain of retaining a leading role on a global stage with the news that the World Match Play Championship is to be re-launched under Volvo’s award-winning sponsorship, moving to Finca Cortesin at Casares near Estepona after 44-years at the Wentworth Club close to London, an initial threeyear contract signed between Volvo, IMG and Finca Cortesin with a two-year option thereafter.
Els, seven times the champion in his own Wentworth back yard, the new Volvo World Match Play Championship signals a major coup for golf in the region.
This year’s 21st Volvo Masters will be the final event in a series dating back to 1988 and there had been fears of a major golfing championship being lost to Spain.
From 2009, the ‘Race to Dubai’ replaces the Volvo Masters as the end-of-season showpiece, money talks with €6.3 million tournament prize money plus a further €6.3 million order of merit bonus pool effectively ‘game, set and match’ to the Emiratesbased end-of-season event.
However, with a Roll of Honour including legends like Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, four-time champion Severiano Ballesteros, Spain’s sole winner and more recently the personal property of Ernie

Opposite page, left to right: Paul Casey won the 2006 WMPC. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Sergio Garcia would clearly love to end the Volvo Masters series with a ‘home’ win.
Having lost some of its sparkle, the former Wentworth based event moves to Finca Cortesin with not only a new home but also a new format, 16 global golfers in an initial ‘champions league’ style round robin, the four group winners qualifying for the more traditional 36-hole head-to-head matchplay format for the Saturday semis and Sunday final with a million dollars going to the winner. Even the
players propping-up the four league tables win a tasty €120,000. And, having been previously criticised for its lack on clarity in its qualification process, the new entry criteria could not be clearer. Using the globally-recognised Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) as the benchmark, the defending champion (given that there will be no World Match Play Championship in 2008, that will be Ernie Els, 2007 champion) and the highest-ranked player in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and the USA will qualify along
with the highest-ranked players not otherwise qualified on the OWGR and the Race to Dubai with the Volvo China Open champion effectively a sponsors’ invite. Says Volvo’s new golf supremo Ericsson, who recently took over the reins from Mel Pyatt, “Volvo is honoured to have been the driving force in the enormous strides taken by European golf over a generation and the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship will be our 113th title sponsorship in men’s professional golf and the 69th European Tour event under Volvo’s highly-respected stewardship.”

“Innovation is a watchword with Volvo and we are also very excited with the creative evolution of the Volvo World Match Play Championship in general and in particular the manner in which the event now embraces each and every continent on the planet, including two firsts, ensuring that Asia, where Volvo and golf go hand in glove, will be involved and secondly taking this fine championship to Spain where the Volvo Masters has garnered such a huge following,” he adds.

Eyebrows may be raised that the venue for the re-launched
event is to be the five-star Finca Cortesin, but the unveiling of its on-site luxury 67-suite hotel later this year along with wider commercial considerations appear to have swung things in favour of the Cabell Robinson designed, 7,400-yard Par-72 course. Speaking on behalf of Finca Cortesin, Vicente Rubio says, “We are delighted to be selected as the host venue for the forthcoming Volvo World Match Play Championship and to join with Volvo and IMG in bringing this great championship to Spain, indeed to Andalucia for the first time ever.”

And Malaga based golfer Carlos Rodiles, runner-up in the 2003 Volvo Masters at Valderrama is backing the choice of new venue, opened in 2006, saying, “I have played Finca Cortesin and it is a fantastic golf course, very testing, a true ‘risk-and-reward’ track and ideally suited to match play. The players, spectators and TV viewers are in for a real treat.”
“I take great pleasure each year in following the World Match Play event. It was yet another of Mark McCormack’s fantastic ideas, and I remember being thrilled to win the inaugural event in 1964. It has been fascinating to see how the event has evolved over the years. I am delighted that this great Match Play Championship continues to hold it's own on the international stage.” Arnold Palmer, winner of the inaugural World Match Play Championship at Wentworth in 1964 and who regained the title in 1967.
Meanwhile, the 21st and final Volvo Masters rounds-off the 2008 European Tour season and its own record-breaking run at Valderrama from 30th October - 2nd November this year, Per Ericsson’s first event in charge of Volvo’s global golf portfolio and he is in no doubt where the immediate priority lies. “There will be all-out focus on the 21st and final Volvo Masters and we are sure that is going to be an enormous success and an emotional send-off to a great championship,” he says as the world of golf says ‘farewell’ to an old friend. International Golf Federation Creates Olympic Golf Committee to Enhance Drive for 2016 Text courtesy of the International Golf Federation
The International Golf Federation (IGF), recognised as the representative body for golf by the International Olympic Committee, recently announced the creation of an Olympic Golf Committee to drive its effort for the sport’s inclusion in the 2016 Games. Organisations that will be represented on the committee are The R&A, PGA European Tour, USGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA and Augusta National Golf Club.
Olympic Golf Committee 067
During a press conference at The Open Championship, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, the IGF also introduced PGA TOUR executive Ty Votaw as the person who will coordinate the Olympic golf movement on behalf of the IGF’s Olympic Golf Committee and other golf organisations around the world. Votaw will serve in a newly created position as Executive Director, IGF Olympic Golf Committee and will work closely with the organisations involved. Votaw, who will continue as PGA TOUR Executive Vice President of Communications and International Affairs, will lead the Olympic effort until October 2009, when the International Olympic Committee votes on which, if any, sports to add.
Golf is one of seven sports under consideration, along with baseball, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and squash. The IOC will vote in October 2009 on whether to add no more than two of these sports. Golf is bidding to become an Olympic sport for the first time since 1904, when it was contested in St. Louis, USA. At that time, men’s individual and team titles were contested among 77 golfers representing just two nations - 74 from the United States and three from Canada. Today, 20 countries are represented among the 100 top male players in the world, based on the Official World Golf Ranking, while 16 countries are represented among the top 100 women, according to the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
“...the time is right to champion golf as an Olympic sport. It’s wonderful that this has become such a united effort among golf’s leading organisations.” “Considering his vast experience in dealing with international golf organisations and issues as a member of the PGA TOUR executive staff and as a former commissioner of the LPGA, Ty is uniquely qualified to lead this effort on behalf of the International Golf Federation,” said Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A. “Having someone of Ty’s reputation and expertise serve in this capacity certainly enhances our efforts to add golf as an Olympic sport.” “There is a significant amount of work to be done between now and next October, when the IOC makes its decision,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem said. “As the PGA TOUR considers this a very important initiative on behalf of the international golf community, we are pleased to provide Ty and the majority of his time to coordinate this effort.”
“Without question, golf’s international popularity has grown significantly over the past couple of decades and the sport continues to expand and develop in new countries,” Votaw said. “So the time is right to champion golf as an Olympic sport. It’s wonderful that this has become such a united effort among golf’s leading organisations. I’m excited about this opportunity and very much look forward to the challenge and, hopefully, reward of bringing golf back to the Olympics.” The IGF was founded in 1958 as the World Amateur Golf Council to encourage the international development of the game. It took its current name in 2003 and today includes the national governing bodies of golf from more than 110 countries. For more information visit: ➲ www.internationalgolffederation.org
The host city for the 2016 Games will be determined at the 121st IOC session, scheduled for October 2, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The four finalists are Chicago, USA; Madrid, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Tokyo, Japan. Pictured above is the official logo of the Madrid 2016 Olympic Bid, a design that represents all Madrilenians and Spaniards. A bright and colourful open hand that, in the words of its author, represents “unity among the different cultures, people, and nationalities that coexist in Madrid.” As well as “a friendly greeting where one appreciates the freshness of Madrid and its people.” This logo will be used throughout the process of the bid. Ireland is undisputedly a magnificent destination for lovers of golf. With over 400 golf courses, including one third of the world’s links courses - all accessible to the visiting golfer this is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave! Many are world renowned, having hosted internationally famous golf competitions including The Ryder Cup (2006), The Walker Cup (2007) and The Solheim Cup scheduled for 2011. Naturally enough, it is the vibrant city of Dublin, with its restaurants, pubs, clubs and nightlife which provides a strong magnet for any visitor. For the golfer, there are over 60 golf courses in County Dublin alone, while some 100 others lie within easy reach. Southwards, in County Wicklow, there are many whose fame has not yet spread, but which provide affordable seaside and parkland venues at which to play in this golfing paradise.
‘The Garden of Ireland’ is a region which encompasses Ireland’s largest Natural Park, afforested land and mountain areas, highest waterfall and biggest man made lake - the source of Dublin’s own River Liffey. The place is a golfer’s heaven, offering the challenge of some of the world’s best links courses as well as a glittering array of scenic parkland courses. With stunning lakes and rivers, hills, mountains or seascapes at every turn, some of the most beautiful are still waiting to be discovered - some are well established, some newly opened. In early summer and autumn the countryside is vibrant with the luminescent yellow of gorse bushes in bloom, while the purple, heather-covered slopes of Maulin mountain stretch like a magic carpet as far as the eye can see. It’s hard to know where to start, but in consideration there is no better place in which to sit back, relax and
enjoy the ‘craic’ with locals than the Irish 19th hole. Talking of which, County Wicklow’s Delgany Golf Club celebrates its Centenary year in 2008. Albeit that not everyone will have the opportunity to join with the members, their friends and local media representatives in the comprehensive programme of social and golfing events. Some of us, however, were lucky enough to do so! The Club was established in 1908 by six members of nearby Greystones Golf Club, who were then not allowed to play golf on their own course on Sundays! Those were heady days, when a golfer could enjoy a round of golf, lunch and dinner for less than the equivalent of a euro! Delgany is a notable example of the blend of the old and new in Ireland’s golfing history. The original parkland - at times hilly course was re-designed by Harry Vardon. More recently, in 2002,
COUNTY WICKLOW 075
Druids Glen
almost completely remodelled, it is designed in its present layout by well-known Irish course architect Patrick Merrigan. It has lost none of its original charm - newly constructed areas blend perfectly with the old features, noticeably improving year round playability.
In 2007, well in time for its 100th birthday celebrations, the opening of a magnificently redeveloped Clubhouse with fine balconies and spectacular views of the course, surrounding hills, sea and village, completed the overall upgrading programme.
Essentially however, Delgany’s history and tradition remain unique, having strong connections with four Ryder Cup players: Harry Bradshaw (1953,1955,1957), Jimmy Martin (1965), John O’Leary (1975), and Eamonn Darcy (1975, 1977, 1981, 1987). Just a few kilometres away and still only 25 minutes south of Dublin, Druids Glen and Druids Heath occupy land which was formerly the domain of the 400 year old Woodstock Estate. Beautiful country, even by County Wicklow standards! The former is widely described as the ‘Augusta of Europe’ - and while architects Tom Craddock and Pat Ruddy designed a course which simply embellishes what nature had already provided - renowned landscape gardener Jack O’Connor was commissioned to ‘add background’ colour, and went brilliantly over the top. At any time the course is a riot of colour: in spring and summer it is veritably kaleidoscopic!

The European Club
Home to the Irish Open in 1996, 97, 98 & 99, to the Seve Trophy in 2002 and voted by IAGTO European Golf Resort of the Year in 2005, Druids Glen almost inevitably nudges Druids Heath into the shade. The course, however, deserves much more, for it is truly yet another example of ‘nature’s gift to golf’, with views to the country all around the mountains and the sea. Designed by Pat Ruddy, the layout is testament to many of the hallmarks of his philosophy on golf. Yawning bunkers to catch any ill-conceived shot; testing par-3’s ranging from 171 to 250 yards; and a wicked use of natural water hazards at the 2nd, 12th and 13th. Travel back to the coast, south, and by stark contrast nestling among the wild and windy dunes at Brittas Bay, you come to The European Club. By Ireland’s standards, this is a mere babe-in-arms, crafted out of linksland on an area of coastline identified in the early 1980’s by owner/designer
Pat Ruddy as he was flying over the region searching for a place on which to create a links of his very own. The perfect gift, the course opened for play at Christmas 1992. True links can only happen where sandy deposits link the beach to inland soils land which, effectively, has little alternative use, being too saline even for grazing. This is land where the ball runs fast all year round and where the bunkers are too deep to prevent the sand being blown out of them. In golfing terms they will test any players nerve as they struggle against the primary elements when land, sea and air come tumultuously together. Consider for a moment the thousands of golf courses on the planet. Of these, only 150 are true linksland. It is a sobering thought that while with the passage of time inland courses may well proliferate - links courses will not simply because there are no more genuine dunesland systems available.
Pat Ruddy is a larger than life character, whose sense of humour shines through his very being and is joyfully reflected in his course designs. As designer, owner, and operator (with the help of his family) of the acclaimed European Club, there is much evidence of that sense of humour in the golf course layout - 20 holes and the longest green in the world at the par-4 12th, at 127 yards.

Your game at The European Club takes you through high dunes, spectacular marshlands, along a wild, exposed beach, up onto the cliffs of Mizen Head, and deep into the valley at the seventeenth.
to return and take revenge! The shot-maker and thinking person should thrive on the challenges of such a layout: the less adept should enjoy flashes of brilliance and the sheer beauty of the surroundings.
Two particular factors may strike you on the way round. First, the links consists of two ten-hole loops - Mr. Ruddy’s philosophy being that, if you’re here to play golf and there’s room for twenty holes, why stop at 18? Second, the green at the twelfth has been extended to measure 127 yards in depth, setting the scene for the art of the great three-putt, by sharp contrast to the disappointing version of the same!
Inland, Macreddin Village is just some 50 minutes from south Dublin, set in 160 acres of the stunning Macreddin valley - a designated area of outstanding natural beauty.
The bunkers are lined (as was not uncommon on links in the 19th century) with railway sleepers - in this instance arranged vertically - adding yet a further awesome feature to the layout. Whether exhilarated or drained by the course you’ll certainly be haunted by the experience and filled with a desire
With rolling terrain, meandering brooks and statuesque pines, Macreddin Golf course is the first foray into golf course design by one of Ireland’s favourite golfing sons, Paul McGinley. Macreddin is the only Irish member of the PGA European Tour Courses - a name synonymous with the highest quality golf course, professional services and outstanding facilities. Intrinsically, everything for this layout has been provided by Nature herself, with a little help from the
Macreddin Golf Club is the first course designed by Ryder Cup star Paul McGinley, and has been produced in conjunction with Roger Jones, of Roger Jones Golf design. Set in a valley designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and featuring holes lined by mature birch and spruce trees, the 7,173-yard, par-72 course is one of the most natural and visually appealing new layouts in Europe.

designer and construction Team! Paul’s adage: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” is certainly evident. The course offers panoramic views, and decision-making is an essential golfing requisite here. Mature trees line the fairways regimented by towering pines, leading to protected greens and a free-flowing brook weaves its way throughout. The signature hole at Macreddin is undoubtedly the twelfth, which epitomizes the style and splendour of the layout. From an elevated tee, the drive is out over Ballycreek Brook, leaving a long iron shot between the imposing pines to the green... most of us would be delighted with a par here! At The Village, you will find every amenity. A luxury, 4* Country House Hotel with Spa, Ireland’s only certified organic Restaurant, a Café, Brewery and Pub, bakery
Once again, it’s time to leave the Emerald Isle... but not, I guarantee, without one last, long, lingering look back. Dublin City still lies between you and the Airport, and beckons. There is, of course, a solution! That’s to add on a couple of nights and play one last round, or two, for now.
adjacent to a long crescent of white, sandy beach. A Bernard Langer design, the layout will challenge even the most adept golfer. Langer makes full use of the surrounding dunes and natural terrain with gently undulating fairways leading to generous, slick greens. Only precision driving and a sharp short game will safely circumnavigate the 98 strategically placed bunkers and thick clumps of wild grasses and gorse bushes while characteristic, Irish sea ‘breezes’ guarantee their own particular challenge each time the course is played.
The Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links are just 15 minutes from the Airport and offer competitive short-stay golf packages. While County Dublin is not the main focus of this article, it is worth mentioning that it provides a very pleasant and convenient beginning or end of break stop-over. The Championship course lies

Algarve
Pine Cliffs Resort
One of Europe’s top golfing destinations, the Algarve has firmly consolidated its reputation of providing quality resorts for golf enthusiasts. In this special play & stay feature we have highlighted a handful of golf course and accommodation options worthy of consideration when travelling to the area.
Golf: Set against breathtaking backdrops, many of the Algarve’s golf courses provide scenarios of such outstanding beauty that they are well worth visiting for that reason alone. Closely integrated into the natural surroundings and with every consideration being paid to environmental sustainability, golf courses in the region have been designed in keeping with the highest professional standards in terms of architecture, landscaping and environmental engineering. All of these conditions combine with the exceptional sea-facing Algarve landscape to ensure that this region is home to some of the finest golf courses to be found anywhere in the world. History: From traces of Roman presence to evidence of the long legacy of Muslim times, from
the Christian reconquest to the epic period of the Portuguese discoveries, there are many reasons for discovering the signs of a quite distinctive historical past. Perhaps the greatest single influence has been that of the Moors who, after 500 years in the region, ensured their legacy would live on in the Algarve’s culture, place names and architecture, as well as in many of its economic and social aspects. Architecture: With characteristics that set it distinctly apart from the rest of the country, the traditional Algarve architecture reveals the strong Arabian influence left by the Moors who inhabited these parts throughout many centuries. In addition to their striking attractiveness and picturesque style, details such as the lacepatterned chimneys, brightly-
coloured fascias, cool roof terraces and white limewashed walls, all have their origins in the daily habits and requirements of distant times. Cuisine: Discovering the extent of the Algarve’s culinary range is a pleasure for anyone visiting the region. In a land of fishermen residing on the fringes of the Atlantic, fish and shellfish have always played a leading role in the kitchen. In many cases, the best recipes are those of fishermen who, over the centuries, have perfected the best means of sealing in all the natural flavour ever so slow charcoal grilling. The inland region has also contributed to the Algarve cuisine with some wonderful recipes based on the local agriculture, wild herbs and plants, and the meats culled from the hillside pastureland.

Le Méridien PENINA Golf & Resort
What better place to start than at the beginning? Penina, now known as the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, is believed to have been the first golf course built in the Algarve, and is located between the traditional fishing port of Portimão and the historic town of Lagos. The large and attractive hotel sits at the entrance to the resort, and its slightly elevated position overlooks some 360 acres (145 hectares) of grounds that house the 18 hole Championship Course, and two 9 hole courses - The Academy Course and The Resort Course. Recent renovations to the hotel have brought the rooms up to the standards expected of the more modern and discerning customer, whilst retaining their character of what would best be described as colonial in feel. Well equipped,
comfortable, and with a view to the manicured gardens and golf course beyond - they provide a perfect base to relax between rounds or for exploring the local area. Five restaurants provide a multitude of dining options within the resort, from light snacks to Portuguese, Italian and international cuisine. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course is an absolute gem, and a must visit whether you’re staying at the resort or not. This is a classic parkland layout in its most traditional sense - where tall, well established
trees define wide fairways. A mix of long and short, straight away and twisting dog-leg holes are enhanced by lakes, streams, ditches and carefully positioned sand traps. Perfectly flat terrain makes the layout an enjoyable walk, yet it can create its own inevitable difficulties with club selection. The course is characterised by an unusual grouping of par 5’s, with four of the five arranged together in pairs at the beginning and end of the back nine producing a par of 38 as opposed to 35 for the front nine.
090 THE GUIDE
Quinta do Lago North & South Course
Quinta do Lago is one of the Algarve’s largest golf destinations. Driving in through the clean, manicured entrance creates a sense of great anticipation, and the courses certainly deliver on this initial promise. The resort has hosted several Portuguese Opens and continues to be the venue for national and international tournaments. All courses have first class driving ranges, golf academy, putting greens and clubhouses with large and informal terraces. The Quinta do Lago North course is the result of complementary work undertaken by the architects William Mitchell, Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore and includes some magnificent par 5 holes that call for great power and accuracy, as well as some par 4 doglegs that require very precise tee shots.
Also designed by William Mitchell is the Quinta do Lago South course. Surrounded by an extensive pine forest, the course carves its way through the trees which define each hole as its own unique and individual challenge. Each hole is perfectly presented to the player from the tee, with bunkers and water hazards almost always in view. Although both anti-clockwise loops, the front nine tends to favour those who can play good draw shots, featuring some sharp bends, while the back nine requires a number of fade shots to be played. The task, as with any great course, is to plot your way around within your own abilities, and doing this will almost certainly bring rewards. Perhaps one of the course´s most famous holes is number 15, a par 3 which when played off the championship tee calls for a 200 m shot over a lake and onto the green surrounded by trees. But don’t worry, as playing from the forward tees makes this a more achievable 160 m from the yellows, or 125 m from the reds.
This is a course that can provide a challenge to, and can genuinely be enjoyed by golfers of all levels. Laranjal, designed by architect Jorge Santana da Silva will be Quinta do Lago’s third 18 hole golf course, and is now just months away from its official opening. The fairways are lined by mature trees and shrubs, fragrant fruit and pine trees. Combined with a large number of Augusta National style bunkers, it will provide a very different backdrop and landscape for the golfer.

Just three minutes walk away is the Vale do Lobo Plaza - a centre that combines shops, cafés, restaurants and an immensely long sandy beach. Guests needs are provided for with 5 Star service and facilities, which include a variety of sports, a heated outdoor pool and three restaurants. Most bedrooms have spacious terraces, and all have air-conditioning, safes, mini-bar, satellite TV and internet connection. Only five minutes by the Hotel’s courtesy transfer service is the San Lorenzo Golf Course. Designed in 1988 by American golf architect, Joseph Lee and his partner, W. Roquemore, it is
located in the Quinta do Lago estate that forms part of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. Its rare and multifaceted beauty, combined with impeccable upkeep, make this one of the best amongst Portuguese courses, and it is continually rated as one of the best golf courses in Europe. The 6,238 metres, par 72 layout consists of 18 beautifully created and scenic holes that wind their way through the natural settings of lakes, pine trees and beaches on the Algarve coastline.
After the typical Algarve terrain of the first four holes, wonderful views of the Atlantic emerge on the fifth green. At the eighth hole, the course turns back inland towards the larger of its two lakes before heading seawards again, finishing with a par 4 where the green is surrounded by the second of the two lakes. With a great variety of wild life, including 67 different species of birds, San Lorenzo Golf Course has all the requirements for a fascinating and enjoyable days golf.

Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort
Located in Vilamoura, within an estate of some 150 hectares of stunning natural scenery and a vast array of fauna, plant and animal life, Vila Sol offers luxury accommodation and a fabulous 27 hole golf course designed by the famous architect Donald Steel. Stretching along a wide natural valley, the course is divided into three loops with three different levels of difficulty. The Prime loop, comprising holes 1-9, is the most difficult of Vila Sol Golf, and is considered an attractive challenge. The first four holes are known as “the most difficult start” on the Algarve, with long and narrow fairways. The Challenge loop is better known as the back nine of Vila Sol, and comprises holes 10-18.
Prestige completes the 27 hole course at Vila Sol. Accuracy and not length is by far the deciding factor on this shorter but narrower loop.
Suites, 3 are Master Suites and one is a Presidential Suite, which guarantees privacy in exceptional surroundings. There is also the option of an exclusive villa, or the comfort and elegance of a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment which boast large green areas with three swimming pools (one of which is heated), a pool bar, cleaning service and baby-sitting à la carte.
The 5 star Vila Sol Hotel is located just 50 metres from Vila Sol Golf. The 189 rooms include 49 suites, of which 45 are Garden
The Vila Sol SPA offers a range of treatments where weekly, daily or weekend programmes are available in a welcoming environment.
The challenge of this loop is that its greens are more hilly than either Prime or Prestige because of the natural terrain, and means that players need to be more accurate when approaching the greens.

Modern architecture with distinctive Moorish accents is complemented by enormous pools and cascading waterways. There is also the opportunity for both indoor and alfresco dining. Enjoy a Hilton Breakfast by the pool at Moscada; Portuguese and Latin American cuisine at Cilantro; Mediterranean barbecues at Aquarela; or savour a selection of malt whiskies in the elegant Rubi Bar.
Oceânico is a major player in the golf tourism market in Portugal with a portfolio of 8 championship courses, including Vilamoura’s ‘famous five’ in the Algarve... The Old Course (pictured) is often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pinetrees - the principal hazard - over gently undulating natural terrain. Designed by Frank Pennink, this parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region. The Pinhal Course was the second
golf course built in Vilamoura. Inaugurated in 1976, it is typified by rolling parkland terrain covered with umbrella and Atlantic pines that line the fairways. Many of the holes at the Laguna Course convey a links atmosphere, with numerous water hazards and few trees. The Millennium Course is thought to be one of the most beautiful courses ever designed in Portugal, whilst the Victoria Course designed by Arnold Palmer is one of the most exclusive at the resort, and is host venue to the Portugal Masters on the European Tour.

Vale do Lobo, Algarve, Portugal
Vale do Lobo The Royal & the Ocean
Vale do Lobo Algarve boasts two 18 hole courses - the Royal and the Ocean - both providing an enjoyable and challenging game for golfers of all standards. The Royal Golf Course is a par 72, measuring 6,102 metres. Inaugurated in 1997, it was designed by top American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, based on the original drawings of Sir Henry Cotton. Recognised as one of Portugal’s most prestigious golf courses, it’s features include the almost island green of the 9th and the famous 16th, one of the most photographed holes in Europe with clifftop carryover. The Ocean Golf Course - a par 73, measuring 6,265 metres - is composed of the two original 9-hole golf courses designed
by Sir Henry Cotton, featuring gently undulating fairways which run alongside a nature reserve before leading down to the shores of the Atlantic. It’s emblematic holes are two challenging and spectacular par 4’s, the 11th and the 14th, and the par 3, 15th which runs alongside the beach. The Vale do Lobo Golf Club is located in Parque do Golfe, which offers a full complement of services including a golf shop and a fully equipped fitness centre with a physiotherapist specialising in golf

injuries. Club and buggy rental and changing facilities are also available. The clubhouse restaurant and bar, whose terrace overlooks the putting green, provides a relaxed environment that both golfers and non-golfers can enjoy. The Golf Academy incorporates short practice areas where professional coaching is available. Pine Cliffs Sheraton Algarve Hotel
Surrounded by pine trees, the Sheraton Algarve Hotel, part of the Luxury Collection, offers magnificent views of impressive ochre-coloured cliffs joined by a memorable backdrop of fine sandy beaches, washed by the Atlantic’s crystal clear blue waters. The building’s architectural design is typically Portuguese, with Arab influences spectacularly materialised in courtyards and interior terraces, creating intimate spaces open to the natural light. Sophisticatedly decorated, the hotel rooms provide an unforgettable experience for guests: luxurious amenities, turndown service, in-room movies, and 24-hour room service. You can also enjoy stunning views from the privacy of your room.
Opened in 1990, the charming nine hole golf course sits amongst the pines at the edge of some spectacular cliffs which overlook the beach. The course is not very long, with only two holes running to more than 360 metres, but it presents an interesting challenge for golfers of all levels. After a steady start, the difficulty increases from the 3rd, but perhaps the most challenging hole is the ninth - nicknamed ‘Devil’s Parlour’ - a par 3 which crosses the chasm below the cliffs and
offers sumptuous views over the Atlantic Ocean. Designed by Martin Hawtree, he has paid careful consideration to the surrounding land which mostly remains as it was before the course was built. There is also an excellent golf academy with practice area. After golf, the resort offers numerous dining options, from simple snacks next to the swimming pool and gardens or beach, to gourmet meals such as sushi, grilled fish or Moroccan dishes accompanied by a fine wine.

Quinta da Ria RIA & CIMA Golf COURSES
Designed by Rocky Roquemore, the Ria Course in the Ria Formosa Natural Park spreads along an almost flat surface of 660,000 square metres down to the Ria Formosa itself. More than 300 trees were transplanted in order to maintain the ancient border of the course and the typical features of the regional landscape. Mountains and sea views can be appreciated from almost anywhere on the course, but first impressions on arrival are of it’s immaculate presentation, with beautifully manicured fairways and greens. The 18 hole, par 72 layout is very traditional in style, with each nine hole loop containing two par 5’s, five par 4’s and two par 3’s. Usually providing plenty of space to get your tee shot away, trouble can be found in the form of some
well placed bunkers, and five strategically placed lakes which come into play, specifically near greens 5, 10, 14 and 17. There’s also the tricky par 5, 16th, where any tee shot that’s long and slightly off line is certain to find water, left or right. Elsewhere the course offers a great deal of variety, and the superb greens make for an extremely satisfying putting surface.
should be credit enough for the quality of the layout, which features numerous doglegs with greens well protected by bunkers and lakes, particularly on holes 16, 17 and 18.
The Cima Course sits close by on a 620,000 metre square plot, and the fact it was chosen to host the 2008 Ladies Open de Portugal
Soon to open is the 279 bedroom Robinson Club, which will provide convenient on site accommodation, restaurants and sports facilities.
With no real estate to consider on either course, Quinta da Ria is an unspoilt gem that is worthy of any golfers attention, no matter what level they play.

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses, ‘Monte Rei North’ is a par 72 Championship course measuring 6,567m from the tournament tees, and is a truly unique design. With water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, the course features an enjoyable series of eight par 4’s, five par 3’s and five par 5’s in a challenging and distinctive layout. The course presentation is highly individual, each hole a design gem blending effortlessly into the natural canvas of the landscape, from its ingenious shape and sculptured
bunkers to the impressive presentation and attention to detail which make every hole as remarkable as the next. Fairways and greens are bordered by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees which add drama and provide the player with unforgettable moments to cherish in this unique and tranquil golf environment. The hub of this elaborate project was the creation of a golfing masterpiece, where the art and enjoyment of playing the game
would be raised to new standards - and Monte Rei no doubt delivers on its promise of unsurpassed levels of service and quality both on and off the golf course. The ‘Vistas Restaurant’ led by Jaime Pérez, former leading Chef at El Bulli and protégé of Ferran Adriá is now open. Featuring Mediterranean cuisine with Iberian influences, it offers a complete experience that combines the ultimate in gastronomic delights with a unique ambiance that makes for an unforgettable visit.
098 THE GUIDE
Quinta do Vale Golf Resort
“A challenging layout, in a unique natural environment”, says Severiano Ballesteros, world famous player and designer of this 18 hole Championship layout which includes 6 par 5’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s. Marvellously integrated into the landscape, covering an area of 75 hectares and with a luxurious view over the Guadiana River, the course sits in a natural valley which is always overlooked by the Clubhouse. Players will notice Seve’s creativity as well as his promise to ‘please everyone no matter what their handicap is’. This is without doubt one of his best designs to date, featuring numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles which enhance the quality of the course
and its breath-taking surroundings. Around half of the holes run through the flat of the valley, whilst the remainder rise and fall as they navigate their way around the gently undulating terrain - always maintaining interest and creating a real mixture of challenges. Given the location, it is only natural that water hazards are an ever present feature - especially at the par 3, 5th and par 5, 7th holes whose peninsula greens extend outwards into the large lake which is central the majority of the front 9.
There is also a good deal of variety in the size of greens, often sensibly related to the challenge of the hole. Once aboard, the putting surfaces are excellent, with plenty of devilish pin positions available amongst the contours and steps. The social hub of Quinta do Vale is the Clubhouse. Ideally located in the centre of the resort - it offers all the facilities a golfer might need before or after a round of golf - including spacious changing rooms, a gym, private members rooms, bar and restaurant.

THE GUIDE
Islantilla Golf & Beach Resort HUELVA, SPAIN
For those seeking a base on the Spanish side of the border, Islantilla’s location also provides easy access to Portugal. As well as being an excellent sporting facility in its own right, it is close to a large selection of quality golf courses. Here you will find a resort which caters extremely well for large groups of golfers and families, reflected in rooms that are both practical and extremely spacious. Comprising three sets of nine holes, the courses at Islantilla make an interesting layout where each hole demands the players attention due to a large variety of individual and sometimes intricate challenges. It is often said that the best way to learn how to play a hole is to walk backwards from the green to the tee - and this approach would be of great benefit
on the holes that follow the rolling contours as they wind their way between the tree lined fairways. Accurate positioning of the tee shot is often essential to gain a good view of the approach to the green, whilst knowledge of the greenside hazards make this a course to plot your way around one shot at a time. With 27 holes to choose from between the ‘Blue’, ‘Green’ and ‘Yellow’ courses, there is a great deal of variety on offer. All routings meander their way though the resort, and begin and end close to a large, attractive clubhouse which has a well stocked pro shop and restaurant with friendly, helpful staff. The terrace which overlooks the first hole is a delightful place to sit and contemplate the round ahead, or to relax and review the shots you may have already played.
PLAY & STAY
Some holes are worthy of particular mention, such the par 4, 7th on the Yellow course. After hopefully hitting a drive into the fairway, the hole turns left and downwards to leave the player faced with a mid to short iron over water in order to find the green. Trying to hit the tee shot too far left could leave you blocked out by the trees, whilst too far right leaves a longer and more intimidating approach.
proof of that is the fact a European Tour event was played here in 1995, which was won by Alex Cejka with a score of 6 under par, three clear of second place.
The front of the green sits close to the waters edge, and is guaranteed to cause much excitement, anticipation and possible anguish as players watch their ball midflight wondering if they hit enough club to make the carry. Too much spin and you’re back in the water, but getting it right is extremely satisfying! This style of design is used on more than one occasion at Islantilla, and it is both commendable and refreshing to see hazards used in this way.
Too much spin and you’re back in the water, but getting it right is extremely satisfying!
Good use is also made of the back tees, which transforms a resort course into a demanding challenge only recommended for the low handicap player. Indeed,
With golf out of the way, the 5,000 m2 private beach club (connected with the hotel via a mini train) allows guests to enjoy a swimming pool, terrace, bar and restaurant,
as well as a wide range of sea sports including a sailing school. Meanwhile the Beauty Farm provides a covered swimming pool and jacuzzi, Turkish baths, hydromassage showers and a gym. Taking all into consideration then, for value and facilities Islantilla would make an excellent choice for golfers and non-golfers alike.
