As 2008 draws to a close, so too will our Eat Golf! tradition of highlighting the greatest sporting event on the Costa del Sol. Sadly this will be the last ever Volvo Masters before the The Race to Dubai takes over for the 2009 European Tour Season. Our final edition of the year also coincides with the end of Annika Sorrenstam’s magnificent professional career, and Bethan Cutler of the Ladies European Tour caught up with her for some final thoughts.

But as some doors close, new opportunities arise. Our working relationship with The PGAs of Europe is of great importance to us, and Dennis Shaw continues to write fascinating and informative articles based on the valuable work they are doing to develop and support golf throughout the world. In this issue Dennis explores the value of golf in growing and transforming an areas economy, a topic which will no doubt be covered in depth at their Annual Congress in Murcia later this year.

Fresh beginnings are also afoot at Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Casares, Spain. Recently opening their truly magnificent new hotel, the final pieces are now in place to welcome the Volvo World Match Play Championship to the club in 2009.

For Starters The Volvo Ocean Race, the Everest of the sport of sailing, a 37,000nm round-the-world marathon of skill and endurance gets underway in the Spanish port of Alicante.

Served with more than a splash of water and a dash of drama, the world’s premier offshore yacht race sees eight professional crews racing the fastest monohulls there are around the world, 11 iconic ports in 10 different countries, nine months of intense ocean racing ranging from the subzero cold and the perils of the mountainous seas in the Southern Ocean to the scorching monotony of the infamous Doldrums.

The Volvo Ocean Race got underway in Alicante, Spain with an Americas Cup-style in-port prologue race on Saturday 4th October, with the starting gun fired for the toughest, roughest race on earth in the same Spanish city one week later.

Valderrama UPDATING A MASTERPIECE

Felipe Ortiz-Pati単o, President of Valderrama Golf Club contacted Eat Golf! to tell us about some recent changes made to the course, and how they will impact players at the Volvo Masters.

Over the last year, as part of a three year plan, Valderrama has been undergoing some alterations in order to improve and restore the course to the vision intended by the original architect, Robert Trent Jones Snr. The changes are being made under the guidance of American golf course designer Kyle Phillips, and pictured here are sketches produced by him.

Deciphering the plans, you can see that the 16th tee has been repositioned significantly further to the left - making a fairer hole by preventing so many tee shots hitting the camber of the fairway and running into the rough on the left. With this change, it is quite possible you will see more of the pros using a driver from the tee at this year’s Volvo Masters.

Moving the professional tee further back on the 13th hole now means that players cannot cut the corner of the dogleg with a 3 wood, and should again mean that a driver is used more often from the tee. The fairway has been widened in the landing area to accommodate this change.

Next issue we will go into more detail about the ongoing plans and further changes due to take place in the near future.

One of golf’s elder statesmen, someone who knows a thing or three, from hands-on experience, about the topic under discussion, once remarked to me that wherever golf takes a hold as a new pursuit, affluence soon follows.

Quite a claim, that.

Bear in mind that you can’t say the same for football, cricket, rugby, tennis, cycling or any other of the world’s most popular sports. Yet golf, when introduced as a new culture, does accumulate wealth in the community provided that there are enough courses to attract a new category of tourist and resident.

One doesn’t need to ponder long and hard to find confirmation of the far-reaching statement: Spain’s Costa del Sol, parts of Portugal, Southern Turkey and many other regions around the world, for example.

One such region in the process of providing further proof is Murcia, north-east of the Costa del Sol, with a similar enviable climate, an attractive coastline, hundreds of square miles of open countryside, two airports, a modern roads network, several golf courses in place, several under construction and many planning applications in the pipeline.

All of which makes the core topic of The PGAs of Europe’s Annual Congress in Murcia from November 25-28, just about as appropriate as it is possible to be.

The overall subject of a special day of debate is ‘The Benefits of Golf to Society’ and there will

be several specialist speakers on the programme, more qualified than yours truly, to outline these benefits in some detail.

The Congress takes place during the Association’s yearly week of activities including the International Team Championship at Roda Golf and Beach Resort, the President v Chairman Golf Challenge and finally the Awards Dinner that brings the programme to a close.

The traditional Spanish concept of Sea, Sand and Sangria has long since ceased to be enough in itself to complete the ideal holiday destination. Many tourists are looking for more to do than lie by the pool or on the beach by day, and eat and drink by night, pleasant though that may be.

Although the congress is mainly at the 525 Hotel, a short distance from Roda, the Benefits of Golf day is at the Hotel Nelva, in Murcia town, while the President’s challenge match is at Lo Romero and the awards dinner at the Restaurant Aquario.

It is not my brief here to anticipate what the speakers will say at the Hotel Nelva on the subject in hand, but it is glaringly obvious that a golfing culture inevitably brings with it a whole list of social, economic and environmental benefits.

Golfers, by and large, have spare euros in their pocket to spend on flights, car hire, taxis, hotel beds, the satisfying of excessive thirsts, green fees, buggy hire,

purchases in the pro shop and whatever else takes their fancy.

All this, very often remember, in what was previously open countryside used only by wildlife and the occasional group of picnickers. Even the environmental, ‘save our planet’ lobby’s potential objection is assuaged by the realisation that golf course architects are, themselves, as green as well-watered grass.

An integral part of a designers blueprint nowadays can be such necessities as protected areas for threatened species, bird sanctuaries, tempting lakes and ditches for pond life along with well-concealed little highways and byways for creatures who need them to keep them safely out of the way of inconsiderate humans or other predators!.

Around these courses, almost inevitably now, are housing estates for permanent residences and / or holiday homes, an enormous source of business opportunities... so there we have ‘economical and environmental benefits’ well covered for a start, since golf courses could never be deemed to be an eyesore.

As for social and health benefits, well golfers can and do, socialise as robustly as any other group and, crucially, due to the etiquette of the game and the sense of fair play that it engenders, they tend to be pretty decent human beings.

With golf as an interest that can border on the obsessive, they have a ready-made means of occupying their leisure time either by playing the game, practising it, reading about it, watching it on the telly or boring the daylights out of non-golfers by introducing it to any conversation.

That also kind of covers the health aspect, too, because even if it is, as some sceptics deems it to be, ‘a good walk spoiled’, it is still a good walk for those who don’t succumb to the temptations of a buggy ride... and even those who do, are still far more active than the couch potatoes we could all easily become.

amount of ‘new money’ being generated by the industry that has grown up around the sport.

In a previous article here I outlined how golf is bigger than Hollywood now in the economy of the United States and is only outstripped by domestic appliances and the like. That’s how important golf has become.

Therefore, the relevant authorities of Murcia are to be complimented for recognising this some years ago (when they had La Manga and not a lot else) and deciding to invest untold time, energy and resources into going for it themselves.

And go for it they have, with a whole new infrastructure still being put in place, and the lessons learned by the pioneering Costa del Sol to take on board in terms of what NOT to do as well as what to do.

So, as I observed earlier, there could be no better or more appropriate location than Murcia for The PGAs of Europe’s 19th Annual Congress and its concentration on the diverse subject of what golf can do for society at large.

Bethan Cutler caught up with Annika during her last ever European tournament in Denmark to find out how she was feeling, and what the future might hold.

How does it feel to be playing in your last European tournament?

It’s kind of mixed feelings. It’s nice to be here. I’ve never played in Denmark as a professional so it was nice to do it in my last year, rather than on a holiday. I try to stay focused and play good golf.

What do you think your legacy will be? That’s a good question.

Some of the things I want to be remembered for are my golf, sportsmanship and somebody who enjoyed the challenge and wasn’t afraid to push and push and get better.

What are your greatest memories of playing in Europe? I’ve been lucky because I have a lot of wonderful memories from over the years. I would say my career is a lot better than I ever thought it could be. I am walking away with a lot of experience and a lot of memories. It has been great.

What is the thing that you can pin point as a high? It is tough to pin point one, which is a good thing I guess. Shooting 59, being the first woman to do that, Hall of Fame encompasses everything, all the wins and playing with the men.

Those are the three big things and the highlights of my career.

Have you any regrets? For example, you were never a member of a winning Solheim Cup team in the States. I guess there is always something but I have been a part of many Solheim Cup teams and had the win in Sweden, which was huge. I wouldn’t say that would put a dampner on my career at all.

The memories that you have with your team-mates is something you can’t create anywhere else and I am lucky to have done that seven or eight times.

Tell us about your Academy, that is a big thing for you, isn’t it? It is.

The Academy is a big dream of mine. Working with my coaches, my swing coach and my fitness coach, they helped me to get to where I am today, to reach my potential. I wish to be involved and will be through my Academy.

I will be teaching kids, really just sharing my commitment and passion to golf with anyone that wants to get better. We have created the Academy which is an

up-scale one of a kind experience.

We will be going there and having a really good time.

Do you think the Ladies European Tour is in a healthy state? I think so.

What is neat about it is that you have so many different types of players out here. Everybody has their own personalities and their own games. I have always been a supporter of the European Tour, not just for being a Swede but for

growing the game of golf. This is where I started even though the last 13, 14 years I have been playing mostly in the States. I always wants to play where the very top were playing but when I did get a chance to play over here, I did. Having said that, look at the teams for The Solheim Cup. We have some great players here. I am very positive on the future.

Terry, your caddie, has been with you through thick and thin. What can you tell us about Terry? Terry and I have a great partnership. It’s been over nine years now, eight majors and 40-something wins. First of all he is just a great guy. He works very, very hard. He is competitive in his own right. He knows what to say and when to say it. It is easy to caddie for somebody when you are playing well but when you are not playing well, that is when you really test a caddie. Also when you get some rain or bad conditions, those are two tests of a good caddie

and he passes both of them.

He has become a very good friend of the family, he and his kids and his wife, we spend a lot of time together outside of the course.

Even though I’m stepping away, he might continue to caddie. He hasn’t really decided but we’ll keep our friendship and who knows if in a few years I get the urge I might give him a call and say: “Hey, let’s go back on tour and try it again.”

Do you think you might come back?

You never know. I do love the game; I love the competition.

I’ve spoilt myself so much the

last few years with great results, it’s been tremendous. It’s very hard sometimes to wake up in the morning and try to either surpass my expectations or even break more records. That takes a toll on you. You have to push very, very hard to do it every day.

Sometimes it’s nice to wake up and not feel you have to shoot under par for it to be a great day.

Heather forever I’ve previously mentioned in this column the collection of old black and white photographs I have of British golf courses from the 1930s and 1940s. It is a fascinating snapshot of how golf was, complete with tweeded golfers, hickory clubs, and rough, ragged courses hewn from the surrounding landscape.

Although I have many pictures of links courses whose dramatic undulations and big skies contrast starkly in black and white, I’m particularly drawn to the images of old heathland courses, many of which I have had the pleasure of playing. Sunningdale, The Berkshire and St George’s Hill are among the classic heathland layouts in my collection.

Historically, heathland was a natural inland alternative to coastal linksland – indeed, the first heathland courses became known as inland links. Like seaside dunes,

the sandy soils of these courses were too poor for agriculture, but made excellent golfing terrain with ridges, hills and hollows on which to site tees and greens, not to mention heathery swards to define the fairways and rough.

In the case of the many courses that were established on the abundant heathland covering vast tracts of Surrey and Berkshire, south west of London, from the mid 1890s onwards, the expansion of the railways to the growing suburbs played a pivotal role. City gentlemen, who clubbed together

While the development of the game in the UK led to numerous heathland courses being constructed, effectively conserving the habitat, vast amounts of natural heathland have been lost to development and urban sprawl.

In Surrey alone more than 80 per cent has disappeared since the 18th century. And the threat now is not more development, but the lack of management as heathland is vulnerable to invasive plants and trees, such as the silver birch, which is now actively controlled.

Much heathland is now protected, not just in the UK, but where it occurs in Europe, from the north coast of Spain, up through Brittany and Normandy in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, northern Germany, Denmark and the southern regions of Norway and Sweden.

One of the richest heathland areas is Jutland in Denmark. On a recent flight I took to Scandinavia, clear skies revealed this wild finger of land poking provocatively into the North Sea. Great sandy beaches give way to the tumbling links and heathery plains that were the evocative setting for one of my favourite films, Babette’s Feast.

Looking down from above, the golfer in me could see a golf course here, a course there. But as much as golf has helped to conserve heathland in the UK, it is legislation that will best preserve Jutland’s wilderness.

That’s not to say golf can’t enhance an environment. It can. And, in the case of one extraordinary project I visited in Turkey in September, it is actually helping to generate new heathland.

Turkey? Heathland? Surprisingly so. Not known as a golfing hot spot, perhaps, Turkey is an upand-coming golf destination.

Down on the Mediterranean coast, an hour’s flight south from Istanbul, lies the city of Antalya and the Belek Tourism Centre, a strip of hotels and 14 golf courses stretched out along the sandy coastline. Colin Montgomerie’s latest course has just opened here, a Nick Faldo design is already open for play, but the final course to open, in November 2008, Carya Golf Club, is the one that interested me most.

Designed by Thomson Perrett & Lobb, the course architecture practice of five-times Open Champion Peter Thomson, Carya is set on a superb site set back from the beach with sandy soils, pine forest and a sand ridge running through it. On site, the design team found native heather, and although you couldn’t say this was heathland in the northern European sense, the similarities were enough to make them think Carya could be heathland inspired, with heather forming a feature on the backs of bunkers and framing the drives and fairways, just as it does on the courses close to the company’s Surrey office. Not in an unnatural way, however, as the heather is indigenous, after all.

The trouble was, there wasn’t enough heather to go around.

The ingenious solution was to construct a heather nursery on site and propagate cuttings taken from the naturally occurring heather. To date, around one million heather plants have been propagated in the greenhouses and planted around the course.

Heather is notoriously fickle and while the young plants are thin and neatly planted apart, it is anticipated that in time they will establish themselves and carpet areas of the course.

Where the heather is most striking is on the backs of bunkers. Instead of the rounded, grass bunkers you see on most resort courses, at Carya the heather dramatically defines the bunkers and casts dark shadows across the mounding and fairways. With pine trees lining the holes and sandy soil underfoot, there are moments when you really think you are back in Surrey or Berkshire.

Peter Thomson himself, who I was once lucky enough to play 18 holes with at Sunningdale, has himself described Carya Golf Club as strongly reminiscent of the famous heathland courses around London which rank among his favourites. He too thinks Carya is an exceptional course.

While Turkey isn’t quite a 30-minute commute from London Waterloo, the trip back to Belek to tee it up at Carya Golf Club this winter is one round of golf I am looking forward to.

Vega Forging Process Vega have used a one piece forging process to produce the JL irons and wedges. This one piece forging process gives the best possible feel. No welding is used to attach the head to the hosel which can reduce feel.

From raw material to finished product is a 10 stage process: 1. S25C mild steel iron billets are cut into section and then heated to 1200*c.

2. The molten billet is then struck with the forging hammer several times at a preset force to create the approximate shape of the head.

3. The head is then struck again with the hammer to refine the shape both front and back.

4. The head is struck a final time to ensure the face is perfectly flat.

The excess metal is then trimmed.

5. The grooves and model numbers are now pressed into the face.

6. The hosel section is then drilled out of the head. Drilling out the hosel from one block head rather than welding a hosel on gives a stronger and more uniform feel.

7. The craftsmen then hand grind and polish the heads to the perfect shape and weight.

8. The heads are then masked and the faces hand sand blasted.

9. The final checks are carried out by highly specialised craftsman, they check loft and lies, weight and for any imperfection that may have occurred. Only the perfect heads are past through this stage.

10. Finally the paint is added to the model numbers.

When I am putting poorly Dave and Ron Stockton always check my weight distribution at set up. Quite often my weight creeps to my back foot, allowing me to come up and out of my strokes. Ideally 60 percent of your weight should be on the forward foot. This provides complete stability during the putting stroke, allowing me to stroke freely without excessive body movement. When my weight is forward, I can stay still and grounded allowing me to stroke the ball online.

By Sam Pleshette l PGA Professional Anna makes a great point about weight distribution whilst putting in the previous pages. Another reason of excessive head and body movement in the putting stroke is the temptation to look up through impact, often from being too keen to know whether the ball is going in the hole or not! This is certainly a noticeable difference between the putting strokes of pros and amateurs. Notice in the picture just after impact how I have resisted the temptation to look up, and kept my eyes down where the ball was. As a result my body has remained in its original posture position, keeping my shoulders, and therefore clubface square to the target line.

Try this and you will notice how keeping your head and body as still as possible during the stroke can really improve your putting.

David Poulton continues the complete club fitting and building process from beginning to end, using Eat Golf! editor Nick Senior as an example client.

With a hybrid club already in play, Nick needed to decide if he wanted to keep using that club and adjust his new set make-up accordingly.

The possible lofts (degrees) for his new wedges were: 52 (8° bounce) 56 (14° bounce) 60 (4° bounce)

The lofts (degrees) for his new set were as follows: (Hybrid in play - 22° or 3 iron - 21°) 4 Iron - 24° 5 Iron - 27° 6 Iron - 31° 7 Iron - 35° 8 Iron - 39° 9 Iron - 43° Pitching Wedge - 47°

Although I did have other lofts available, Nick wanted the wedges matched to the rest of the set (Nakashima). We discussed a 2 or 3 wedge system, either having 52, 56 and 60 (4 degree gaps) or 2 wedges (5 degree gaps). We decided on 2 wedges (52° and 57°) as Nick already had a 62° lob wedge he wanted to keep.

Nick was happy with the results and distance he gained from his hybrid club, so I did not think there was any benefit in starting his set with a 3 iron. The hybrid was a far more versatile club and definitely more forgiving.

I would have to tweak the 56° to 57°. When adding 1 degree of loft the bounce will also increase by 1 degree - which isn’t a problem as it is then more playable from bunkers. Also, as his wedges would be flat in lie angle, they would not appear to have so much bounce.

The 52 degree had 8 degrees of bounce, which would be suitable for approach shots from a variety of turf conditions.

I made it clear to Nick to get his lofts checked twice a year - as irons, especially forged heads with steel shafts, distort in loft - going up to two degrees stronger (less loft) with use. This also affects the bounce, making longer irons harder to hit. With less bounce the strike needs to be more precise.

I think Nick will be pleased with his completed set make-up, and of course he can add a club to his set if he feels the need. Now the real fun can begin, the building!

RICE for Golf Injuries!

So, after a round of golf your shoulder, elbow or back feels sore and you are in acute pain...

What are the causes of this pain and what should you do?

The pain you are experiencing is most likely to be a musculoskeletal injury involving any of the four tissues of the body - muscle, tendon, ligament, or bone - and require you to apply a proven injury treatment protocol right away. The acronym RICE is the most common method of describing this proven treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. The overall objective of RICE is to minimise the swelling that you experience because of your injury so that your body can begin to heal and you can return to the golf course without major delays.

The guidelines for RICE

Understanding RICE and applying this simple protocol in a timely manner will be invaluable to you - whether you are a conditioned golf athlete or a recreational golfer. Injuries do happen to most golfers and even to great golfers like Tiger Woods or Vijay Singh.

If you know what to do when you feel sore and in pain, you can easily solve your predicament and return in a timely manner to enjoy more fun on the course!

Elevation: Elevate the injured joint to the level of your heart or just above heart level. By having your joint above your heart, the force of gravity will assist in reducing the swelling.

The overall objective of RICE is to minimise the swelling that you experience because of your injury so that your body can begin to heal...

Breathing to Win!

The great Tom Watson once said “When I learned how to breathe, I learned how to win”, and many golfers struggle with this most basic of all mental game skills, which means they are prey to the emotional highs and lows of the game, simply because they don’t know how to stay focused on their breathing and therefore let mental interference ruin their chances of success.

Lao Tse, Tao Te Ching In this article we’re going to take a look at the ancient art and science of Chi Kung - literally translated as breath or energy work - and how it can help improve your game.

Chi Kung is a Taoist practice, fundamental to the martial, spiritual and health arts of ancient China and its principles are now being practiced by golfers and other athletes across the globe to enhance performance. Indeed, Dr Michael Yessis, President of the Sports Training Institute in America, recently said: “Breathing correctly is the key to better fitness, muscle strength, stamina and athletic endurance” Chi Kung’s main concerns are: (i) Helping the practitioner to breathe more efficiently, (ii) Keeping the mind focused on the breath, thus remaining free from mental interference, (iii) Allowing the upper body to soften and “empty”, while creating a strong, centred and stable base in the legs and feet.

CHI-POWER GOLF

Now I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how this would enhance not only your mental game but also your set-up posture, plus your ability to stay rooted yet fluid throughout your swing, so here is a simple Chi Kung exercise you can start to practice right now.

Wuji Chi Kung The Practice of Stillness Stand in a natural posture, your feet shoulder-width wide, your toes pointing out very slightly, your knees soft, your arms hanging loose at your sides and your head as if gently suspended from above. Allow your eyes to gaze gently, one mile into the distance and relax your chest, but without slouching or allowing your shoulders to roll forward.

Now, place your attention in your lower abdomen, just below the navel, at a point called the T’an Tien.

Allow yourself to focus quietly on your breathing, silently repeating “I am breathing in - I am breathing out” while you inhale and exhale.

Gently soften and relax more as you stand with quiet awareness on your breathing and try to maintain a calm and steady focus on your centre-point.

Sounds simple, right?

Well, the challenge is to hold the posture and stay focused on the exercise for at least 20 minutes, or more if you can... and then repeat at least 3 times per week.

What’s this got to do with golf?

Well, I’m sure many of you have read about the benefits of correct breathing and you may even have touched on it at some brain-training seminars, or when reading books about the “inner game”, but the simple truth is, unless you actually practice the discipline on a regular basis, you will never gain the many benefits it can bring to your golf and life.

Yet, if you can incorporate into your weekly schedule, this basic Chi Kung exercise, which is thousands of years old, will help you develop a greater awareness of your mental state at any given moment (fear, anticipation, anger, excitement - all of which are being experienced on golf courses around the world right now!) and what’s more, you’ll be able to take yourself back to a neutral and relaxed state, more conducive to a great drive, putt or chip shot, simple by focusing on your breathing.

How can you incorporate it into your game?

Once you can comfortably stand in the Wuji Chi Kung posture for 20 minutes - and make no mistake, this will take several weeks to master, as at first 3-5 minutes will seem like a lifetime!

- you will start to gain greater awareness of your body and mind and can incorporate the learning into some new swing drills. # 1. Chi Kung Swing (Focusing on your breathing) Swing naturally while focusing only on your breathing. Focus your mind on your T’an Tien - (your body’s natural centre of gravity, located approximately 2” below the navel) and take a few deep breaths.

Keep your shoulders down, keep your chest empty and relax your jaw. Set-up to the ball, breathe in while you move to the top of your back-swing, and then exhale all the way through to your finish position. Focus entirely on your breathing and trust your swing. # 2. Wuji Swing (Holding your posture during the swing) Find a ‘problem’ area with your swing; something you are striving to perfect. It could be making sure your hands are ahead of the club-head on your down-swing or keeping your right elbow down at the top of your back-swing.

Get into the correct position and freeze-frame for at least 30

seconds, holding the position and memorising the feeling with your mind and body. Remember to relax and breathe into your T’an Tien while holding the position.

When you’ve repeated this drill 3 or 4 times, swing naturally from the held position, all the way through to the finish. #3. T’ai Chi Swing (The slow motion swing) Set-up to the ball and take a few deep breaths into your T’an Tien.

Swing as slowly as possible and stay relaxed throughout the swing, breathing normally. Take at least one minute to complete your swing, without resisting the slowness or anticipating the finish. Take your time and fully engage with all aspects of the swing, from shifting your weight, raising and lowering your arms, to turning your waist. When you can comfortably take one minute to perform your swing, try it with your eyes closed! This will really test your balance and control.

Try these drills “empty-handed” (without holding a club) and then try with your favourite club and/or driver. Note your feedback on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 = poor, 10 = excellent.

Score in the following way for each drill: #1. How focused were you on your breathing, did you manage to empty your mind of all other swing thoughts? #2. How stable and relaxed did you feel while holding the posture? #3. Did you really swing slowly?

I mean, T’ai Chi slow? One minute is an incredibly long time in which to perform your swing, but mastering this drill will take your awareness to another level.

Carlos Beautell Carlos Beautell Largo is the new Operations Manager at Finca Cortesin, a course which has set exceedingly high standards since opening in Casares on the south coast of Spain in 2006. Eat Golf! met with Carlos to discover more about the club and what sets them apart from their competitors.

How long have you been Operations Manager at Finca Cortesin and what is the balance so far? I have been working at Finca Cortesin for two months now and I could not be more satisfied with the course and the staff. I think the concept of Golf Club that Javier Reviriego (General Manager) has established in Finca Cortesin will set the standard of how quality courses should be managed in Spain in the future. We have a firm compromise to give our clients the best service and the highest quality installations possible. The staff have understood this concept correctly and my goal is to keep and improve the level of client satisfaction that we have at the moment.

Tell us what makes Finca Cortesin a special course? The golf course has been designed by World famous golf course architect Mr. Cabell Robinson, who worked many years for the Robert Trent Jones Group. The course layout is simply spectacular and the main features are the length of the course (6,808m), the 110 perfectly manicured marble bunkers, which are the signature of the architect, and the variety of tee platforms (more than 5 per hole), which gives us the possibility to set up the course as a very challenging championship course or an enjoyable country club course for any type of player.

Another great feature of the course is the great variety of its natural vegetation which includes olive trees and corks. Some of the trees are over 100 years old and the setting is spectacular.

Would you say that it is a very difficult course? Well, it is a Championship course, and has recently been elected to host the Volvo Match Play Championship for the next three years, so it has to be challenging. But as I mentioned before, every player has many tee options and there is always one that suits every type of player.

The course is very fair and if you hit good shots you get the reward

for it. We held a Peugeot Loewe Professional Tour tournament in September and there was only one player under par at the end of the week (-6). He also holds the new course record with 67 shots which is a fantastic round with the strong wind we had that week. This shows that if you play well you can also score well even in difficult conditions.

What other installations does the club offer? Our club has a fantastic Driving Range with wonderful views. It is located next to the clubhouse and has two levels for training: one with natural grass and the other with artificial grass

mats (20 bays). The range has four greens situated at different distances to practice all kinds of shots simulating a real hole. The orientation of the practice area is south-west to avoid hitting into the sun at anytime of the day.

The Finca Cortesin Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy opens in October, which is a master-franchise for the teaching system designed by the best player of all time. We are of course very proud to be associated with the Jack Nicklaus name and we think it will definitely raise the level of teaching facilities in the Costa del Sol. The coaching studio will be equipped with the latest technology which includes monitored swing analysis, weight distribution sensors and super-slow motion cameras.

Is Finca Cortesin a Member’s course?

The goal at Finca Cortesin is to become only a Member’s course. We have set a maximum of 750 members that can buy a membership, in the format of “right to play” for 50 years. At the moment we have 114 members and we hope to increase that number in the following years - especially after being elected to host the Volvo Match Play Championship for the next three years.

How much does it cost to be a member at Finca Cortesin? Right now the price of a membership is 50.000€ + IVA. This price will increase next year and the following years after the celebration of the Volvo Match play. I always say that right now is the time to become a member

Since winning ‘Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year’ in the 2005 International Association of Golf Tour Operators’ Awards, Austria is rapidly gaining in popularity as one of Europe’s golfing hotspots.

If you are not already familiar with Austria and whether you go there specifically for a golfing holiday or simply decide to play a round or two interspersed between more erudite activities, you’re in for some great surprises. This is a place which offers a generosity of spirit and hospitality typical of a country which is not quite like any other.

Here, where walking is a tradition, golf takes on the mantle of a real sport. Often located in idyllic natural surroundings, courses have an almost picture postcard appearance: they range, inevitably, from parkland, to hilly, to nigh on mountainous!

Quite apart from their sheer diversity, exceptionally high standards of upkeep are always worthy of comment.

As elsewhere in Europe, the game was initially slow to kick off its mantel as an elitist activity, with few courses open to visitors.

Over the past 10 years, however, a number of golf courses have quickly sprung up as an adjunct to fabulous winter alpine resorts.

There are now some 156, ranging from clubs which offer just 9-holes to those with 36. Tour operators have become keen to promote combined ‘Golf and Wellbeing’ packages, linked in to a stay at any one of the numerous excellent spa and wellness hotels - an enviable sporting combination during late spring, summer and early autumn An active marketing policy, through organizations like ‘Golf in Austria’, (which has been operating for some 18 years now) seeks viably

to link golf with winter sports. This is an enviable, cooperative venture between family run four and five star Guest house properties, spa and gourmet Hotels and a variety of different courses, all working together to improve the quality of the business which is golf.

Fly to Munich and you are just a short drive away from the Austrian border; alternatively, fly direct to Salzburg. The former provides the opportunity to plan a two-centre break and see a little of the magnificent surrounding countryside. The latter, ample time to wander around the enchanting baroque city where Mozart was born, which is famous for its summer music festival and which straddles both banks of the river Salzach, from which it takes its name... Centuries ago, an active trade in salt brought with it great wealth. When it took on the mantle of an Archbishopric at the end of the 8th century, (the Archbishops ranking second only to the Pope),

the diocese acquired supreme powers which brought with them mining rights for salt, gold, copper and iron and for coinage and duty...

Suffice to say that while a day (at the very least) in Salzburg should form part of your holiday itinerary, it’s a round of golf at one of the 13 courses in that region that’s on this agenda. On that note, let’s take a look at two contrasting golf courses, not far from Salzburg, which give a tempting fore-taste of just what golf in Austria is all about...

The Enns Valley stretches from Radstadt to Shladming and on to Dachstein. While this is one of Austria’s best known and most popular skiing areas, more and more people are visiting in the summer, attracted by golfing, walking, riding, cycling, mountain biking, cultural and natural attractions which will keep you occupied for months. With over 300 mountain lakes, 100 large (and

small!) waterfalls, unique flora and fauna, canyons of bare marble with highly beneficial springs, there’s no time to be bored.

Golfclub Radstadt is virtually within walking distance of the town from which it takes its name.

It nestles between the craggy peaks of the Radstäter Tauern on the one side, and the snowcapped Dachstein on the other.

The first nine holes of this unusual course mainly wind their way along the valley, designed to complement the space they occupy. From the 11th onwards, the course takes a more Alpine turn, with the 12th accessed by the ‘Birdie-Jet’ golf cable car, which carries golfers and their equipment in two separate cars.

From the tee, the shot is away down to the valley below. The 13th tee is 996 metres above sea level, also with spectacular views out over the course. All in all a memorable experience.

Lessons are available at the Club’s teaching academy, which together with a short nine hole course provides an opportunity to practice one’s short game and is ideal for groups of beginners as a testing ground for play. Practice facilities also include practice bays, chipping, pitching and putting areas.

Golfclub Radstadt is a participating member of the ‘Golf Alpin’ initiative, which allows golfing guests to pay three or five green fees, then play any of the 30+ participating courses in Salzburg and in Tyrol.

If your ideal is to fall out of bed on to the course, stay at the, literally, on-site four star, Zum Jungen Römer hotel, which also houses the Clubhouse, Pro Shop and Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant. The hotel personifies the warmth of welcome offered throughout Austria, proudly and ably run by the Steigler family who own it. The hotel has a

fitness & well-being area, with indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam-bath, whirlpool, solarium, tepidarium, loconium, beauty and massage rooms. It serves excellent food, accompanied (naturally!) by good, local wines.

Just a few minutes away, the, superior four star Hotel Gut Weissenhof, provides further, family-run accommodation, with excellent cuisine The hotel has been recently refurbished and expanded with the addition of Residenz Gut Weissenhof, which offers generously proportioned suites and including rooms for allergy sufferers.

After golf, there is the opportunity for horse-back riding, both in the indoor equestrian centre or surrounding countryside. A huge Spa area offers massage and beauty treatments; an indoor tennis court, fitness gym with qualified trainer, heated outdoor swimming pool, complete the picture.

By somewhat of a contrast, Dachstein Tauern Golf & Country Club, at nearby Schladming (also popular with skiers) is home to a leading, Bernhard Langer designed course. You are now in Styria - the most densely forested province in Austria. Styria also operates a 3 or 5 round golf card discount scheme - the Steiermark Golf Card - in conjunction with 23 courses in this ‘The Green Heart of Austria’.

The course at Dachstein Tauern opened in the early 1990’s and is styled the ‘Pebble Beach of the Alps’. Laid out at an altitude of 2,475 feet, in a setting surrounded by mountains which remain snow capped throughout most of the year, the design is typically American and unique in its Florida style flair.

The high standard of green-keeping maintenance is quite remarkable and the course enjoys a long season, playable from early spring to late autumn. While not overly long at 5,895 metres (par-71) off the championship tees, Dachstein provides a great golfing challenge.

In the thinner, clear, mountain air, the ball travels further and club

selection becomes paramount on the back nine, where small lakes and water hazards come into play.

The Clubhouse is an eyecatching, modern building at the heart of the course: it has the usual facilities, coupled with an excellent restaurant.

Of the nearby hotels, Hotel Pichlmayrgut is closest, at 8 km.

In addition to accommodation and golf packages, the hotel also offers ‘Spring Wellness’ packages - something for everyone at the ‘Alpen Spa’, earth panorama sauna, steam bath, cosmetic studio, vitamin bar - the list goes on... tennis, squash, a skittle alley and indoor golf facility. The gourmet kitchen uses produce from the hotel’s own bio-agriculture facility; dishes may be accompanied by wines from a cellar offering a selection of over 1,000, both national and international wines.

Golf in Austria is typified by its tranquil surroundings. Chances are the only sounds you will hear - apart from the cuckoo in early spring and birdsong in general - are the peals of bells from the towers of nearby, distinctive church towers. Prices are eminently affordable and the courses tranquil and un-crowded.

La Reserva is a traditional par 72 private members club which opened in August 2003. Situated next door to Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande, San Roque and Almenara may give an idea as to the prestigiousness of its location and the surrounding area.

The valleys of Sotogrande seem as though they were put there to build golf courses through, with the rolling hills, abundance of trees and closeness to the sea ensuring the backdrop of any hole is as picturesque as can be.

At 355 metres in length, the first hole starts things off with a relatively straight drive, and should not pose too many problems. It is on the second hole that you enter the first of La Reserva’s shallow valleys, and you begin to realise

that this course has something special to offer. A slightly blind tee shot with plenty of fairway to aim at sets up a view to the green.

With water to the left, bunkers to the right and a tree line backdrop, this hole perfectly demonstrates the classic challenges that Cabell Robinson set out to achieve here.

Built to USGA guidelines, the course also houses a magnificent 6,000 m2 club house with adjacent driving range, putting and chipping facilities. The quality of the course layout and exceptionally high level

of maintenance have already been recognised throughout the world of golf, making La Reserva a must play for any visitor to the region.

Twenty seven holes designed by architect Dave Thomas await golfers who choose to play at Almenara. El Higueral BENAHAVĂ?S Perfect for golfers of all levels, El Higueral is an exquisitely designed 9-hole par-36 layout, that takes the player on a journey as it winds around the hillside with spectacular views and genuine surprises at every turn.

The 4th is perhaps the signature hole of the course, and features one of the most picturesque green settings on the Costa del Sol. A par 5 downhill dogleg right, the sweeping contours of the fairway turn to reveal a peninsula green nestled by the lakeside, and an accurate drive is required if the player is to successfully reach in two shots. Played to reach in regulation, good judgement of distance with a short iron could equally set up a birdie opportunity, though water is a factor if the pin is placed back right.

Santa Clara GOLF MARBELLA

Making customers feel happy about handing over their hard earned euros is one of the most difficult achievements to attain in business, but is something that Santa Clara manages on a daily basis.

The secret is a well maintained, playable and enjoyable golf course combined with an exceptionally high level of service. From check-in to the first tee, somebody is there to offer helpful advice with a smile.

The opening hole sits alongside the ninth, tenth and eighteenth, all of which lead towards or away from the magnificent clubhouse and one of the best practice facilities on the Costa del Sol. The course offers a great deal of variety, with a mixture of different length par 4’s which give the

opportunity to strategize from the tee. Driver is not always the best club for the task at hand, though often there can be reward if the risk is taken.
