AIR FORCE SHARK Issues surrounding the well-being of recruits going through armed forces selection have been brought up on numerous occasions in recent years, especially following the deaths of three reservists during an SAS training exercise in the Brecon Beacons. Until recently, it has been the responsibility of instructors to regularly check trainees at regular intervals to ensure their well-being, however, instructors are not medical professionals. That is all about to change though with the U.S. Air Force recently introducing the Survival Health Awareness Responders Kit, or SHARK. With the Survival Health Awareness Responders Kit, sensors are embedded into shirts to transmit key metrics including heart rate and estimated core temperature from smartphones to a server. As students undergo physical endurance tests during extended periods of

isolation, the system allows instructors to monitor the data in real-time and issues alerts for heart rate spikes and significant increases in temperature. Since the device identifies the user’s location, medical personnel can quickly respond to those in need of care.

The Survival Health Awareness Responders Kit project began following Cedarwood University’s long-standing connection with the Air Force Research Laboratory’s 711th Human Performance Wing, where Loren Caleb Baum’s senior computer science design team began work on a platform that could effectively monitor trainees undergoing physically demanding Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape training. During training, the recruit may face a sudden heatstroke or other medical emergencies on the field. Such medical conditions could hinder the recruits radioing instructors for help.

Baum, a 2019 graduate of Cedarville University’s computer science program, worked on the health sensor that helps keep airmen in training safe from potential medical crises for his capstone senior project. Following his work on SHARK, Caleb was offered a job at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and has since been working on refining the system, with the Air Force recently announcing that SHARK 2.0 was complete and had been delivered to instructors at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis in Texas.

SHARK 2.0 has seen a number of changes following Baum’s employment by the Air Force, with Baum moving SHARK from the realms of mobile applications to a cloud-based server to make the system more reliable, as well as improving the usability, with SHARK now deployable in a wider range of scenarios. With the new approach, instructors simply log into a website from any computer to monitor the health status of trainees instead of launching an application which required installation and constant updates.

Furthermore, the team simplified the startup process with Quick Response codes that automatically input students’ information when scanned. This measure reduced the total setup time from one hour to five minutes and makes it easier for students and instructors to begin a new session.

Prior to the introduction of SHARK, Tech.

Sgt. John Garcia noted that in extreme cases, numerous students would have to be administered ice baths to students with elevated body temperatures in a last-ditch effort to treat trainees. However, since the introduction of SHARK, instructors have been able to pin-point students reaching a zone known as “the danger zone”. This has allowed instructors to act pro-actively, pulling trainees out of training before the effects caused major health issues.

As such, no ice baths have been administered, showing the effectiveness of the system.

Maj. Toby Andrews, 66th Training Squadron, Detachment 3 commander, said he appreciates that SHARK “gives (instructors) real-time alerts on the health and well-being of students.” The system “truly eases my mind as a commander,” he said since it “allows us to provide preventative care (in cases) that could otherwise lead to serious medical situations.”

In the future, Baum expects the SHARK technology will be applied in other fields, including for many first-responders. Baum believes the SHARK system will better protect the health of firefighters who are in the midst of battling a blaze. The technology can track health conditions and provide preventative countermeasures to reduce the danger of heatstroke and other medical issues.

Working with the top thermoplastic engineers and designers in the US, IcePlate went from concept to prototype to reality in only six months’ time, and is now deployed across all branches of the US military as well as in the kit of body armour users worldwide.

ICEPLATE CARRIER EXOSKELETON Inspired by the tried-and-tested emergency responder protocols, Qore Performance’s co-founder Justin Li initially thought to combine first aid science with athletic base layers while on duty as a sworn law enforcement officer in the California desert. Faced with difficult terrain, a formidable adversary, heavy protective gear, and high altitude, Justin was looking to improve his odds in the field. Unwilling to add more weight to his kit, he realized that efficiently offloading heat to stay hydrated was the best way to boost his endurance, strength, focus and recovery.

Following a number of innovations, Qore Performance began work on providing a solution to cooling soldiers down in hot environments following a call from the United States Army. Qore identified that while a number of innovative cooling systems were on the market, many of them simply were not applicable to use on the battlefield due to weight restrictions.

They did however realise that soldiers were already carrying one of the most effective cooling sources available – water. With this in mind, Qore Performance began work on the IcePlate. The IcePlate was designed to minimise weight and maximise cooling duration and body contact.

Using a unique and incredibly strong laser-cut, ultra-high molecular weight laminate that is 14 times stronger than steel, ICE weighs approximately one pound. This makes it one of the lightest plate carriers available today. It is also hydrophobic, cut-resistant and abrasion resistant. The Iceplate Carrier Exoskeleton incorporates MAPs (MOLLE Attachment Points) and loop on both the inside and the outside of each sleeve as well as an open-bottom architecture, ICE is configured for maximum ventilation, modularity and drainage. ICE will not retain water, even under the most intense circumstances.

ICE fits medium ESAPI plates. This design synchronizes with the soon-to-be-released ESAPI-contoured IcePlate 3 to create the thinnest, flattest, toughest and coldest (or hottest) system ever. Ronin Tactics was originally founded as a school of instructors, all of which are Special Operations veterans that are exceptionally qualified in Marksmanship, Direct Action, Personnel Recovery, Security, Executive Protection, Reconnaissance, Trauma Medicine and other Special Operations capabilities. The company is somewhat unique in the sense that it’s training arm not only provides knowledgeable instructors, but also provides their customers with a range of high-quality equipment to train with.

However, with said expertise comes the knowledge of what excels on the battlefield, and what doesn’t. That knowledge led to the launch of Ronin Tactics’ manufacturing arm, which has led to a range of products including plate carriers, knives and belts. Ronin Tactics’ Task Force (TF) belt is a tactical gun belt that has been designed and developed on the battlefield by Special Operations soldiers, for Special Operations soldiers. Due to Ronin Tactics’ being founded by members of the Special Operations community, the Task Force belt finds itself in a position that more and more companies are making use of, a position in which it has been forged from the experiences of a real-world operator.

The Task Force belt is a lightweight and comfortable tactical two-layer system that is adaptable to a wide range of holsters and accessory pouches. Manufactured from a military-grade nylon weave material, the Task Force belt is incredibly durable, and boasts a tensile strength of 7,000lbs (5,000lbs for the MultiCam variant). This two-layer combination ensures a secure shooting platform by combining a comfortable inner Hook-and-Loop Fastener webbing belt with a tactical load-carrying belt. The tactical load outer layer allows for 2 rows of 1/2” webbing enabling the shooter to add an assortment of MOLLE attachments. The belt features a newly designed 2” Cobra Buckle with an attached “D-Ring”, which ensures more MOLLE space for the shooter.

■ ABOUT THE OWNER

While we usually steer away from highlighting the owners of companies within Gear Up, we feel that Tu Lam’s story is an interesting one worth highlighting. Ret. MSG Tu Lam served within the United States’ Army for 22 years, earning the coveted Green Beret in the process. Tu was born in Vietnam in 1974, shortly after the fall of Saigon, and has known a life of war since. In ’76, members of his family were the victims of Communist rule. Shortly after this, he was smuggled out of the country and eventually landed in the United States after his Aunt married a Green Beret.

Following this, Tu found himself at Ft. Bragg, and at the age of eight he was indoctrinated in the ways of a Special Forces soldier.

Tu heavily believes in the Bushido Code, a Japanese term for the many codes of honour and ideals that dictated the Samurai way of life, or in short, the Samurai Code. When Tu retired, he labelled himself ‘Ronin’, a term used to indicate a masterless warrior.

The role of the Ronin is simple, to take his life’s teachings and give back to the good of this world. This led to him forming Ronin Tactics, giving Tu the ability to pass his knowledge onto those who needed it the most.

The company name is symbolic of Tu’s own life. While the Ronin symbol is the “O”, which represents zen, Tu combined this with the stripe above the “O”, the Ronin symbol for war. Through war, Tu found his own zen.

ASTM PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS The Massif Advanced ¼ Zip Combat Shirt offers the end-user a combat shirt that adheres to a number of regulations. All fabrics used within the manufacture of the Advanced ¼ Zip Combat Shirt pass ASTM’s D6413 and F2302 performance specifications.

■ ASTM D6413 ASTM D6413/D6413M is the defining test method for compliance with OSHA 1910.269 and one of the most commonly used tests on flame resistant fabrics in the United States. Adopted from Federal Test Standard No. 191A, method 5903.1, the vertical flame test has been used for many years. The purpose of the test is to determine whether a fabric will continue to burn after the source of ignition is removed.

■ ASTM F2302 This specification provides minimum requirements for labelling protective clothing offering heat, flame, and melting resistance for applications where the potential exists for incidental exposure to open flame, radiant heat sources, or hot surfaces which could melt or ignite materials. Core Survival entered the market following a chance conversation at a United States Air Force base in the early 2000s, in which the need for a special helmet light for Pararescue Jumpers surfaced, with the options available at the time being either bulky strobe lights or chem sticks.

Following said conversation, the company begun working on prototypes; working with a helmet manufacturer and active duty users to create the first helmet mounted light that offered the end-user a low profile, snag-free, break-away lighting solution for High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) parachute helmets.

THE HEL-STAR EXO 5 The HEL-STAR 5 EXO® is Core Survival’s most impressive product within their range in our opinion, sporting a plethora of features that cement it as one of the best – if not the best – examples of ingenuity within the tactical gear market. HAIX’s exponential growth has seen them expand massively. It features a bi-directional USB-C port for both charging a USB-C device and also recharging the unit itself via USB-C, a 12V DC output for charging larger devices such as SLR cameras, heavy duty torches, and tablets plus a 5V USB output for smaller devices including smartphones, GoPros, smartwatches, and GPS systems.

The tactical extreme has been developed in a coyote brown colour, specifically designed for the tactical and military markets when camouflage and blending in is vital. The rugged, clam-shell design solar panel offers 5 Watt max output, allowing full recharge of the extreme battery unit within 18-22 hours in optimum light conditions, plus you can use the solar panel to charge 5V devices directly if desired.

PARAMED BACKPACK RANGE The PARAMED range from Elite Bags Military is a re-design of their already hugely popular PARAMED range found in their non-military line. Although designed for medical professionals, the Paramed, like all of Elite Bags’ creations is extremely versatile making it the ideal medium sized soft bag for any professional who needs to organise and transport critical equipment. The fully padded backpacks can be fully opened to display six removable pouches and an equipment board. All the removable pouches feature transparent windows to help view contents at a glance and hook-and-loop tape to attach them to the bag.

The range includes a number of different options, however we have chose to focus on the MB10.003 and the MB10.135. Both backpacks are made from a 1000D polyamide material, and offer the end-user a water-resistant internal section which is perfect for holding medical supplies. When opened, the end-user will find a central flap with multiple transparent pockets capable of storing a range of medical supplies. Furthermore, there are a number of pull-out containers which are attached to the backpack.
