Nirvana concept is portrayed through the openness of the space, the color of white, light blue and grey. Open space office is chosen to give an airy and light feeling of the office. A vertical partition is used to gives a separation between each working space. This partition will also help each individual to build their own nest that will help them to calm and motivated at the same time.
sustainability is an important part of this project, not only it helps to portrayed the branding of our client that is certified as a green company, but it also help to reduce budget renovation and reduce waste. To achieve sustainability in this project, I proposed to recycle the wood beams from all the demolished wall and use it as the main material to build the partition panel. I re-use some of the furniture with a new paint to make it look like new table. The beautiful existing oak flooring is kept to show the originality of the space.
ELEVATION - D
Partition is arranged vertically, it gives flexibility and moveable to be rearranged if in the future they have more people joining their office. Each partition is equipped with different type of 3 types of container that is attached to the partition. Each person can personalized their own workspace and put their own stationary on this vertical panel, therefore they can save space and keep their desk clean. A sustainable 12ft LED suspended pendant light by Stickbulb is chosen to gives a general lighting in the office space, completed by individual table lamp on each workstation.
Acoustic panel with gingko biloba shaped by Stone Designs is another solution to gives a comfort for the space user by reducing the noise level. The color that is chosen is white, light blue and light grey to interpret the concept of Nirvana and disguised themselves as a cloud. This particular selection of acoustic panel is also selected because of the fan shaped that Fireclay has the same shaped for their tile collection, which called “ogre drop. This wall will give an accent to the space, beauty, and comfort at the same time.

The office is an open space layout to give an easy access for each individual to communicate through their work. High level of noise pollution might be an issue, therefore this space is completed with series of soft material that will help to reduce the noise level, such as acoustical ceiling, and acoustical wall panel. The CEO main desk is located in the middle of the open space to give an easy access for the CEO to monitor his employees. Two partitions on both sides of CEO desk will give privacy yet it will still give an open space feeling. The panel on the back is inspired by the logo of the client’s branding. It is an acoustical panel that will help to reduce the noise level in the open space office.

Project Description U R B A N O K I T C H E N is a retail project located in the heart of San Francisco. The project was done in a month with my partner Cherlenita Fnu, we are faced with a new challenge to solve this project as a team. We are provided an existing floorplan to work with and the program was to create a market, cafĂŠ, and dining area. As a client, Tony Riviera has a certain requirement for this project. As a designer, we come up with design and solution to fulfill his requirement. U R B A N O K I T C H E N appears in the middle of the community as a brand that offers the highest quality natural products to the customers while disguising ourselves in an upscale yet approachable packaging. The camouflage of the urban lifestyle that resembles the modern society becomes our main concept in bringing the most essential ingredients from nature to our valued customers. In our design execution, the overall principle of sustainability and organic will be concealed by the classy and luxurious look of the material choices and design elements.
Client Profile Tony Riviera is the CEO and chairman of Primo Hospitality Group. As a successful restaurateur and businessman who owns several restaurants across the country, Riviera desires to open a new upscale specialty food market & cafe that specializes in organic, local and sustainable products of the highest quality. Riviera aims his new hospitality project to be classic and classy that offers very high quality products is also affordable to the customers. His main target customers will be young, foodie, hipster crowd that live within the community who have a high disposable income and support the healthy lifestyle.

History
Accessibility
Changes in the economy in the late 20th century, made a big change to Mission bay area, it was created in 1998 by the Board of Supervisors as redevelopment project. It used to be high crime neighborhood since it is side by side with Hunters Point area which it holds a high crime rate. A master plan to revive the area and convert over 300 acres into a planned community was produced in the late 1990s. Known as the Mission Bay Project, it is the largest urban development initiated by San Francisco since the construction of Golden Gate Park.
The location is considered as a prime location where it is highly accessible. There are Caltrain stations that can connect people from bay area to San Francisco. Muni line: KT, F, T-Owl, S, 91 located few blocks away from the location. 3rd St, one of the biggest street in San Francisco is passing by this neighborhood. Freeway Line 280 is located 2 minutes away from apartment. Embarcadero is located 15 minutes away.
Upon completion, Mission Bay will become home to a mixture of residential and commercial properties. Apartments, condominiums, retail stores, restaurants, corporate and science businesses will all be anchored by the already completed AT&T Ballpark and a new research campus for UCSF. Within these developments will be 49 acres of open space for parks and recreational facilities. Mission Creek Park is first of many parks planned for Mission Bay.
This area has a pretty diverse environment, but mostly it is dominated by young people. As we can spot on the map, this neighborhood is surrounded by schools, for example, AAU and UCSF. There are a lot of restaurant that range from low to high-end restaurants. Software and design offices are located nearby, which clearly state the target audience for this project which is young people or hipster. The area is still in the transition from industrial area to more upscale and youngster area.

Camouflage
CONCEPT STATEMENT Urbano Kitchen appears in the middle of the community as a brand that offers the highest quality natural products to the customers while disguising ourselves in an upscale yet approachable packaging. The camouflage of the urban lifestyle that resembles the modern society becomes our main concept in bringing the most essential ingredients from the nature to our valued customers. In our design execution, the overall principle of sustainable and organic will be concealed by the classy and luxurious look of the material choices and design elements.
Commercial Design
urbano kitchen
development Our first approach of camouflage is to use different levels of wooden tube to expose some shape. We came up with an idea to have a different size and height of wooden tube on the ceiling and floor and some other places in each area of the floorplan. Marble and wooden tube are our main material that we used to cover the space. Furniture that we chose has an organic shape to blend in with the space. However, we realized that this is not the best way to approach the concept. Along the process, we changed our design and simplify the whole design and come up with new style that has been developed from the same concept.

Dining room We are trying to interpret tree and branches using the wooden tube like what you can see on this image on the left. The “sculpture made from little wooden tube is going to be the focal point of the space. The wooden tube will flow to the fire place area and create an arch as a way finding.

wine cellar
In the wine cellar image below, we are doing the same concept with the same material, however instead of doing nature with the wooden tube, we are mimicking “the city” landscape with the same material. Wooden tube on the wall is used as the wine rack that will easily displayed the brand of the wine.

FINAL APPROACH After our reviews and critiques from our lecturer and classmates. My partner and I as a team decided to go back and re-think about our concept and try to come up with a new solution to interpret our design concept. We take a risk and re-do the whole design to achieve the best solution of our design in a very limited time before the final presentation.

The word “Kitchen” is placed in the middle, as the camouflage to replaces the horizontal strokes that are removed from the word “Urbano”.

coffee shop elevation In the restaurant area, their eyes will be drawn to the column that is disguised as a lighting sculpture made from reclaimed wood that is painted with low VOC paint. White paint is chosen as the best choice to cast the shadow of the sculpture on the day time . The design of this column is a representation of the complexity of urban lifestyle on San Francisco and how they share different lifestyle in a different neighborhood yet they are still located in the same city. This central piece of column is intended to be a strong accent of Urbano Kitchen and at the same time it will attract customer from outside. There will be 3 different types of seating provided in restaurant area, they area banquette seating on the left side, 2 top tables by the column, 4 top tables, and lounge area by the fireplace. The warmth of wood is introduce to balance the whole temperature of the space between the cold of marble and the darkness of the ceiling. The city landscape camouflage can be seen on the fireplace and will be repeated along the space. We can see the same pattern on the coffee shop as another way of way finding throughout the space.

FOODIE KITCHEN AND MARKET Cove light above the prepared food area is used as a way finding that will lead the customer to the market area. “Foodie Kitchen”, “Ready To Go?”, and “Foodie Market” are the names that we chose to fit the target audience which mostly are young hipster San Franciscan. Each checkout counter will have 2 pendant lights that will help to identify the cashier register. The door to the kitchen is being hidden by the wood plank as a camouflage. The center piece of the horizontal wood stacked is another type of repetition of the light sculpture from the restaurant area. In the Foodie Market section, we can see the same pattern that is repeated from the coffee shop. The contrast between black and white of the color will remind the customer of the exterior elevation of Urbano Kitchen.

Location This house is located at Lauren Heights neighborhood which is a small, quaint neighborhood located just east of Inner Richmond. Its saturated by Edwardian and Victorian homes in a middle class, suburban neighborhood. Because the neighborhood is bordered on the north (California Street) and south (Geary Boulevard) by stores, cafes, and restaurants, virtually everything one could need is a short walk away. The main shopping strip is between Spruce and Laurel on California Street. Here are two grocers, one high-end the other less so, plus the usual array of boutiques and chains that cater to the area’s middle- and upper-middle class: The Gap, Chico’s, Starbucks, Pasta Pomodoro, Walgreen’s, Standard 5&10 Ace Hardware. It’s also calm and somewhat secluded neighborhood with relatively safe streets.
Transportation
Demographic
The two main shopping streets are also transportation corridors, with Muni buses Nos. 1 and running along California to the Financial District, and the Nos. 31 and 38 running along Geary, again toward downtown and Union Square. The No. 33 runs north and south along Arguello, while the No. 43 travels on Masonic before heading to the Presidio and points east. Though parking is generally not difficult away from California Street’s shops and the hospital, the city’s Department of Parking and Traffic does issue “F” and “L” residential parking permits to allow those who live in the neighborhood to ignore the posted two-hour limits on most streets.
Many families live in the area, mostly of white or asian ethnicity. It is of relative middle to upper class neighborhood bliss. Crime here is infrequent and characterized mostly by noise nuisances and a few thefts in a recent three-month period, according to San Francisco Police Department statistics. Car theft and auto break-ins are increasingly common, particularly in the neighborhood’s eastern sector and along Geary and California, with these corridors experiencing the same rise in these crimes as elsewhere in the city. The occasional assault takes place along Geary (where bars and other night-time business may explain the altercations). 73

The level will be occupied by a single man who is an art admirer., he is an interior design and a teacher. He does not watch TV and does not want any. He does a minimal cook and rarely invite guests to his house. A couple of meeting with his clients will require him to have a separate office and meeting room. Client prefer open space, but still provide a privacy. He is a wine collector and desire a wine cellar in his house.
design approach A wall full of painting is displayed by the fireplace instead of a TV. This way, the living room will look like a private gallery instead of a standard living room. A hidden kitchen will be provided to clean up the view, yet it is still there if he need it in the future, even if he only use it for light cooking. There is no door to the master bedroom, walk-in closet and bathroom. It is arranged in a way to create a privacy for each area without any door requires. A piece of stainless steel dining table balanced with a warm tone of red fabric as well as the brown carpet to give more comfort to dining area. The ceiling pattern is inspired by the futuristic concept of outer space where it is a mysterious place where human cannot reach. An LED strip light with blueish ambience is used to portrayed the coldness of the galaxy. The light follow the geometric shape of glass cut that has a different level and gives a 3D look to the space. It is a challenge to the designer to put a futuristic design element to residential place and still make it cozy and welcoming for the client to live here.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Egalite Cinema is inspired by the slavery that African people had been suffered, yet they survived and still stand strong until present days. Despite their grim past, they are not trying to hide from the light. People in Africa are not afraid to show their beauty, they don’t hide themselves under the darkness. In fact, they bring the most of their skin tone through colorful fabrics that wrap around them. Not only it emphasize their dark skin tone, but it also bring joy to those who wears it. The objective of this project is to show the beauty of Africa through their natural elements and fabrics. Africa’s fabric pattern is distinguished as a one of a kind with colorful choices and pattern. The shape of this project is inspired by turban, which is a piece of fabrics of that wrap around their head as a symbol of honor to their God.

To appreciate those skills, we will use most of our fabric selection through local artists. It will be displayed where it will be exposed to visitor. By doing this, we can help to connect the visitors who might be a tourist or a collector with the artist and it can help to increase the economy issue among the local. During construction, we will ask local people to participate as well by donating their unused rattan basket that we will turn into a light fixture for the waiting space and the cafe area. Bamboo is chosen as the main structure for this project, due to its sustainability, strength and easy construction. The roof is constructed from straw roof that can be easily found in the local area. The floor is using the original material that is provided in the location, this can cut the production cost. The overall space will be open and some will covered with fabric to gives a better ventilation due to dry climate. Fabric and layers of straw roof can become an acoustical material as well to lower the noise level in the space. The bench called Tikikaka designed by Naoto Fukusawa for B&B Italia. The fabric, that is tied up to the bamboo structure and the straw ceiling will help to reduce the acoustic issue of the cinema. Dark fabric with small pattern is chosen to minimize the maintenance of heavy traffic from the audience. Warm ambience lighting below the stairs is a great way for way finding during the movie. A big space in front of the screen can be used for special performance when there’s no movie playing in the cinema.

watercolor Watercolor is a new media to me and through this class I learned how easy, fast and effective this media is, if we know how to use it properly. The same principal of light and shadow with color pencil is applied in watercolor rendering. The goal of this class is to be able to show what kind of material we are using in our project through our hand skill, and still create a realistic rendering.
