While the cattle industry is the reason for our gathering here at the ranch, it is the people and friendships we have formed over the years that are at its heart. We would personally like to thank all of our past customers for their belief in our program, as well as thanking our guest breeder, VAB Farms, for joining us for another year but also like to give a warm welcome to David Vest and his family as not only a guest breeder but also as the newest member of Shoal Creek.

This year is a very special and dear mile marker as our owners, Ed and Kathi Rule, as they celebrate not only forty years in the cattle business but also in the restaurant business with their beloved restaurant, Corner Cafe. They have shared genetics and recipes over the decades that have gained relationships in our area but also across the country. Shoal Creek has been a huge success in the Simmental business as well as supporters of our Simmental juniors and we can’t wait to see where else they will take us in the future.

Year after year, we pick out the genetics and cattle that will appeal to our past and future customers before the calves even hit the ground. Whether you are looking for your next breeding piece, next herd sire, elite frozen genetics or your next show prospect, we truly believe that you can find your opportunity here at Shoal Creek. We have been working hard to present a unique but outstanding set of sale cattle. This year we, along with Purdue University, are offering a unique opportunity, as we are offering our senior herd sire, Ruby NFF Up The Ante. This is a chance to own a bull with power, stability, mass and incredible genetics. For the first time here at the ranch, we are offering offspring out of our new donor HILB Bliss G749E, owned with Hilbrands Cattle Co. This beautiful redhead donor has amazed us with what she brings to the table and we are ecstatic for all of our customers to share in the excitement as well. You will also see another set of calves and yearlings from our home raised donors, SC Daisy Duke C1 and SC Robins Kiss D27.

In the previous years, we have offered fall bred heifers and herd sire prospects out of our Red Angus herd but this year, we are delighted to be able to offer a selection of some of our best Red Angus cows but also a set of Red Angus fall open prospects. This set of attractive, open females goes back to our first Red Angus donor, Harmony’s Windsong 0269, that has done nothing but grace our herd with quality and performance in her offspring. A select few of these fall opens are sired by the great Red Six Mile Parabellum 675G and they are not ones you want to miss out on.

Ed and Kathi Rule have been champions in the support of our youth and have once again selected an outstanding female right out of the heart of the fall show dolls to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Missouri Junior Association to assist with the American Junior Simmental Regional events. The AJSA regionals is an event that not only highlights our Juniors in the showring but host a number of educational events to give our youth the tools to succeed in their careers in the future. EXPLANATION OF HOW TO UTILIZE API AND TI INDEXES

First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described to the left, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more information, visit www.simmental.org.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning wt. due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
