Tribute to Terry Robinson

1948-2013

Terry L. Robinson, long time livestock field director for Farm & Ranch Guide, died suddenly Friday, May 17, in a mowing accident at his home north of Bismarck, N.D. Terry was a main person responsible for the Supreme Row. Robinson began his career with Farm & Ranch Guide in 1981, serving as advertising manager. He later became livestock field director and for the past several years has also been director of Livestock Services for Lee AgriMedia, a stable of agricultural publications in the upper Midwest that includes Farm & Ranch Guide, Minnesota Farm Guide and The Prairie Star in Montana, along with publications in South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. “We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Terry Robinson this past weekend,” said Pat Sitter, general manager for Farm & Ranch Guide/Minnesota Farm Guide. “He was dedicated to the livestock industry which was evident by the job he did for us at Farm & Ranch Guide along with the level of service he gave to our customers. “Terry will be missed by the lives he touched throughout his career, especially his family, co-workers, friends and constituents of the National Guard,” Sitter continued. “Terry was very proud of his family, and enjoyed showing pictures of his grandchildren with us at work. “It is with a heavy heart, we say good-by to our friend and member of the Farm & Ranch Guide family.” Robinson also spent 35 years in uniform, starting with his enlistment into the U.S. Navy in 1970. He received his officer commission from the North Dakota National Guard Officer Candidate School in 1973 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve and the North Dakota National Guard, retiring from the military as a brigadier general in 2003. He served in several capacities during emergency operations throughout North Dakota. He was the Task Force Commander in Grand Forks during the flood of 1997. He also commanded two Task Force operations working with the Spirit Lake Tribe near Fort Totten, N.D., constructing housing units on their reservation.

In 2009, then North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven called again on Robinson to help lead the state’s recovery efforts after devastating floods in Valley City and elsewhere. He worked with FEMA and other federal agencies, along with cities, counties and townships to coordinate flood recovery efforts. “It is critical that we have someone in charge to coordinate federal, state and local assistance for our people and businesses as we work to recover from severe flooding this season,” Hoeven said at that time. “General Robinson’s experience in managing emergency situations and crisis response will provide vital support for the citizens of North Dakota throughout the course of the recovery effort.” Robinson also worked with Homeland Security and the state of North Dakota conducting training exercise in conjunction with the ND Association of Counties. The exercises were designed to help train first responders and local community support personnel in response to terrorist activities that may occur within North Dakota at high value targets identified by Homeland Security officials at both the state and federal levels. Robinson, 64, graduated from Mandan High School, Mandan, in 1966 and went on to graduate from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor Degree in 1970, majoring in psychology and a minor in sociology. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.

He is survived by Joyce, his wife of more than 43 years; a son Cade (April), Bismarck, ND, and a daughter Kree (Troy) Nelson, Bismarck; and six grandchildren.
