This single-family spec house project was commisioned by a design-forward developer based in Los Angeles, with the intent of creating a sleek, luxurious estate overlooking the city basin. Conceived as a bold sculptural residence nestled among the trees, it is strategically anchored on a dramatically sloping plot. A slew of material studies were executed, with the initial concept being that of an angular architecture clad in burnt-and-brushed Shou-Sugi Ban. Further development and study for which I was primarily responsible led to a lighter grey stucco volume with moments of blonde wood and lightly figured stone interspersed. My role in the arc of the project began mid-way through the construction documents phase, resolving material detailing, drainage and edge condition details, a custom elevator system, and a spa and steam room in section.

What more fruitful of a typology in an ever-densifiying Los Angeles than multifamily housing? Charged to translate the consistently poetic sculpturalism of XTEN’s single-family architecture to a condo context, I assisted in conceiving and preparing the schematic design for 528 Flores for presentation to the urban design board of the City of West Hollywood. This involved facade material studies, space planning, drawing, rendering, and understanding and navigating a multitude of considerations and challenges regarding parking.

Devlin Drive represents an eloquent manifestation of the legacy of modern home design. My contribution to the realization of this project was drawing and solving the tapered roof edges and walls that frame the entry and major aperatures. This involved coordination with structural steel shop drawings, establishing a normalized taper angle based off the sliding glass door system, minimizing the visibility of the balast roof, and solving the detail for a clean, water-stain-free edge.

1478 Carla Ridge Drive is an existing house that XTEN was charged to expand and fully complete, as well as deliver a more spatially-organized architecture. My role consisted of drawing and assembling a permit set for this renovation, coordinating with a pool contractor to complete the raised-tile system over the previously-poured concrete pool deck, and occasionally consulting with a structural engineer to assure the viability of reorganized walls and sliding glass.

Rehab. Institute of Chicago Built Chicago, Illinois
Clive Wilkinson Architects 100,000 Sq. Ft. 2015
My inaugural project as a designer at Clive Wilkinson Architects was a highly inventive, novel design exercise for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, a world-renowned physical rehabilitation center counting royalty and headsof-state among its clientele. CWa was charged with designing and curating the patient experience, molding the narrative of rehabilitation from the entry threshold to the active floors where physical rehabilitation occurs. The centerpieces of the project are RIC’s trademark AbilityLabs, pioneering spaces in which therapy, research, and clinical activity all happen in concert, with the aim of increasing the speed-to-market of breakthrough treatments. With a desire on the part of the client for a flexible, boundless architecture with unique and strong character to support the organization’s innovative aims and branded identity, CWa set out to design a bold framework in which a custom-designed furniture kit-of-parts could orbit, flex, and adapt to fluid demands. As lead designer on all custom furniture pieces, I sought to imbue each piece with functionality attuned to the unique demands of this user group, while lending a character able to represent and be owned by RIC going forward.

Washington State, USA
3,000,000 Sq. Ft. 2015
In 2015, Clive Wilkinson Architects was approached by one of the world’s largest tech companies to execute a visionary conceptual masterplan for a built-out exisiting campus on the outskirts of Seattle. The current campus consists of a patchwork of disparate parts built over the course of 20-odd years, making legible the steady and sizable progress of this particular company over an extended period. The client charged CWa with creating a unifying architectural solution for the sprawling site, one that was fiercely idealistic, forward-looking, and unafraid to raze existing structures where deemed appropriate. This solution would stitch together the current slate of architectural archipelagos through massive addition and thoughtful removal. The document delivered to the client formed a urban design guideline and framework, one that was steeped in pedestrianism and human-scaled development, with an elevated and programmed walkway at its heart; the proposal additionally demonstrated architectural possibilities and placeholders, bringing to bear the potentials of charismatic architecture.

ARCH 554 Housing Studio Critic: Claudi Aguilo & Sergi Serrat
Barcelona Program UIC SOA Spring 2013
This studio focused intensely around the context of the city of Barcelona and, more specifically, its unique L’Eixample chamfered block typology. We were given the problem of reinvigorating four of these blocks, based off urban deficiencies we uncovered through a study of the site conditions, program, and social activites. Once the four blocks were selected, we devised a set of strategies to add housing square footage while simultaneously improving quality of life for all existing and future dwellers. My proposal makes the block more accessible for users by coupling existing automobile entrances with pedestrian ways, and creates housing with a light footprint that occupies the existing block courtyard. Thus, each household is allotted private patio space, as well as larger, collective mixing outdoor space. Housing units themselves are based on a configurable grid system that is optimized for views and unit-to-unit relationships.

As well, units placed in the site would need to be in close proximity to one another in order to facilitate the necessary volume of housing. Accordingly, the qualities of transparency and lightness need to be embodied within the proposal in order to address these constraints.

3. Low-rise and Compact footprint
4. Resident privacy
Individual
An aim of the project is to implement both larger, collective spaces for all the residents of the courtyard (also accessible to existing residents of the block), but also individual patio spaces for each house, to maintain a sense of one’s own space in this intimate site.
The project seeks to create an architecture which is lower in height and touches the ground minimally. This maintains unobstructed views out of and around the courtyard for the existing residents. As well, the minimal building footprint maximizes the possibility for outdoor and interstitial collective spaces in the small courtyard site.
Privacy and exclusivity for the residents of the courtyard and the block is of primary concern. The intimate space of the project site calls for close interactions between residents. These relationships are encouraged and develop the most when the space remains exclusive. The users of the block currently lack a larger collective space for full-grown residents, and making this space private improves the quality for residents.

1. Only one tower; should be positioned on North-west edge for optimal views and unobstruction of existing buildings
Units
2. The lower quarter should remain clear, except for low 4 unit abutting south-east wall. This allows open, continous space between block entrances 3. North-east interior facade should only be abutted by cantilevered building, optimally with a 4 meter setback
4. Maintain line-of-site views for second building stories

ARCH 567 Research Studio Critic: Paul Andersen
University of Illinois at Chicago Spring 2014
The aim of this Research Studio was to delve deeply into the Design Guide book for Stapleton, a prototypical contemporary New Urbanist suburb outside Denver, CO, mine it for its latent intelligences in the prescription of built patterns, and productively misread and pervert its meanings to script a new set of suburban tenets that could become the catalyst for a design project. The territory for exploitation became the relationship between individual and collective identity, the dialogue between the front and back of a dwelling, and the potentially operative nature of curvilinear geometry. This triparte scheme played out as an urban plan deploying intensified similarity in housing and amplified difference in garages, a flattened relationship in the meaning of main and rear entry, and achieved strategic modulations in built density and program through concave and convex plan geometries.

The use of curvilinear geometry in post-war surburban developments is primarily used to create a picturesque, pastoral quality. Abundantly flowing, curved streets also slow traffic and dissuade drivers from traversing neighborhood developments in order to reach their final destination.

neighborhood plan / organization Stapleton largely deploys a generic Gridiron system to organize its neighborhood scheme. This system is valued for its efficiency and clear resolution, and is also the de-facto choice of proponents of New Urbanism for its inherent walkability and reference to past inner-ring suburban developments.
