What makes the Dressage Mastery system unique is the use of two training scales. You may have heard of the German Training Scale. If you don’t know what the German Training Scale is, it is a very famous system used by European riders to train dressage horses. What I have done is intertwine this scale with the Rider’s Success Scale that I have developed. The Rider’s Success Scale is based on what I believe riders need to learn, develop and master to be the riders they need to be to train their horse in the German Training Scale.
Dressage Mastery Academy is a revolutionary online training program that takes you step by step from basics The Ebony Park Friesian Magazine | March 2015 2 to Grand Prix in a fun and easy way!!

Summer is over and it’s Autumn! We are getting ready this month to start weaning the oldest of our foals - they have grown so much over the last 6 months, you forget how little they were when they were born! If you would like to have your own Friesian foal, get those progress photos as it grows, and experience your horse from the very first day it enters the world, then perhaps you might like the silent auction we are running this month on two of our mares - 1/2 Friesian mare Anika and purebred Friesian mare Intrigue - both of who are in foal!! So you get two horses for the price of one - and you get to choose the price! I would like to say with much excitement a huge congratulations on behalf of the team at Ebony Park to Natasha and Phil on the announcement of Natasha’s second pregnancy!! We are eagerly waiting for September to see baby number two :) In this month’s mag, Tash talks about getting into a rut, we give you some information about dwarfism in Friesians (fairly rare and unheard of in Australia, but still something that crops up from time to time), I talk about horse chestnuts and what they are... and we give you progress photos of the new indoor arena finally being built at Ebony Park!! :) Have a fabulous month - and make sure you keep on sending through photos of you and your horse for the Best Friend Picture Board!! :)

Dwarfism in Friesians Dwarfism, which is certainly not a common occurrence in the Friesian breed (it is more common in miniatures) is somewhat present in larger breeds including Friesians. It would be hard to imagine the heartbreak you would feel after not only the eleven months of your mares pregnancy, the time spent beforehand getting the mare in foal, to be finally presented with an abnormal animal. There are two types of d w a r f i s m : achondrodystrophic, which is generally a normally proportioned body with extremely short legs and ears; and brachiocephalic, which is more visually extreme, commonly with disproportionate heads, and disfigured legs, spines and jaws. Both types of dwarfism are debilitating, though the severity may range depending upon the individual. From some reports made in the early 20th century from the KFPS studbook and a veterinary report in Holland, certain similarities can be seen with the Friesians new start nearly a century ago and the past two decades in Australia with regard to
c l o s e relationship breeding. Around World War I when Friesian numbers were greatly depleted leaving only t h r e e studbook stallions, the future of the breed was grim. Since the Friesian horses first arrival in Australia in the late A dwarf and normal Friesian foal, both the 1970's, there same age. has been a euthanase. Dwarfism in Friesians suggested that "Every stallion, even if only sired one dwarf foal, is a heterozygote and can therefore with a heterozygote mare produce a dwarf foal". This is probably where some could go into panic, as many of the breeding horses in Australia carry these lines! From this same report the veterinarians point out that "There are several stallions, that delivered dwarf foals, then there are many that served many mares that never sired a dwarf foal. The latter do not have the dwarfism factor, indeed had
they had this factor, they would have - after serving a heterozygote mare, who certainly occurred within the served material sometimes sired a dwarf foal. As long as a stallion has not sired a dwarf foal, we have no proof that he possesses the factor". Several AWFA Inc breeders have tested out this theory by breeding their stallions to the known dwarf producing lines as well as close relationship breeding, with thankfully only positive results, so it must be pointed out that not every horse within the same
bloodline will produce dwarf foals! From the family trees of foals one can conclude that they are the product of brothers or sisters, in nearly all pedigrees of almost all generations one frequently finds the same horse. So inbreeding, in some form or another, seems to be a rule. It has now become apparent that in Friesland now and then dwarf foals are born, always from a mare and stallion of the Friesian breed. These dwarf foals are in color build and conformation like the Friesian but are much smaller. They are black, with a nice sheen, have strongly developed mane and tail, a noble head, a high neck, quite a lot of temperament, but the legs - and mainly the hind legs - are very weak in the joints, so that some slightly bend a n d g i v e w a y. T h i s makes the foals' gait is uneven - this causing many breeders to have them put down.

DIARY DATES 26-28th March DRESSAGE WITH THE STARS IS AT THE END OF MARCH!!
28-29th March WE ARE ALSO TAKING SOME HORSES TO THE KEURING ON THE SAME WEEKEND!! If you would like to volunteer to help us out, please email us!
Note from Tash Hello Friesian Lovers!!!!! Can you believe it is March already!!!!! :) I am super excited as this month we have Dressage with the Stars where Abe will be competing in the Grand Prix and Gretchen in the 4 year old class. Then on the same weekend we are rushing Loes, Helena and Helena’s foal Ulysses to the Keuring on Saturday and Dante and Jorrit to be presented on the Sunday. It will be a really busy time but we are all looking forward to the adventure!!!! I am also currently 14 weeks pregnant so will be 17.5 weeks pregnant for the weekend so I am praying I can suck my ever expanding stomach into the white breaches and tails for the event!!!! Another very cool goal we have ticked off in Feb is launching the very popular Dressage Mastery Academy. If you ride dressage but feel confused or lost in how to train and move forward through the levels, check DMA out - right now you can try the first month (1.5hrs video and 35 go manual) for just $1.00! Go to www.dressagemastery.com for more information! Antonia will also be leaving us on the 1st April and I am looking for two very special working riders to take her place. If you think you have what it takes to get to Grand Prix and work in a stable where you are pushed to be better every day, check out our ad on the next page (page 7). Dante is going super well with a PB in the Medium of 65.513% at his last competition. Both he and Milo will be ridden by me over Winter and worked in all the Medium and Advanced work so they are ready to rock when I return to the competition arena in October. As many of you may know we are also working on a indoor arena performance stable complex to be built. We have waited three years for council approval and are now very excitedly up to the excavation stage!!! We look forward to bringing you the updates every month with completion date at this stage looking to be 1st August 2015. I trust you are all moving forward with your goals and dreams! Remember if you need anything please get in touch!! To your success,
Natasha

Who is ready for the opportunity of a lifetime? Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, club... anyone who might find its content useful.
Ebony Park is changing and evolving!!!! Our brand new dressage complex including 25 stables and mirrored indoor arena will be ready in July and we need to be ready to serve our superstar clients!!!! Ebony Park is a Friesian and Warmblood horse stud with over 50 horses. We breed, train and ride Friesians and Warmbloods to Grand Prix level. This means an exciting opportunity exists for two energetic, motivated, driven dressage riders who want a riding career with horses, including riding at Grand Prix level. If you are a dedicated, committed dressage rider with a goal of riding Grand Prix and beyond then we are looking for you! Currently we have a purebred Friesian stallion ready to compete Medium and another talented purebred mare ready to compete Preliminary. There is also a young purebred Friesian stallion and two crossbred friesians due to be broken in at the end of the year. We are looking for someone very hard working, committed and dedicated to doing what it takes to improve daily, and become the best version of them that they can be. You will be pushed in your role and in your riding to give your best every single day. You must also be capable to give lessons up to novice/ elementary standard on our two schoolmasters. You will be trained in your riding, training and in management to step up and increase your skills on the job. You must be friendly, like people, like working as a team as well as alone, and committed to making Ebony Park the best working environment and best business that it can possibly be. We are not looking for people to ‘try’ and see if horses are what they want to do. We want people who have proven they understand that they know what it takes to get results with horses, and are dedicated to improving themselves and their riding. This is not a short-term position – we are looking for someone who is dedicated to taking our horses to Grand Prix, and as such we are looking for a 5 year commitment. We believe the skills are important but can be taught. The biggest thing we are looking for is a person with a dream to ride Grand Prix, and a complete desire, resolution and determination to seeing that dream come true. If that’s you as well as being willing to work hard, add value and be a part of a special team where as you make your dreams come true, you also help our dreams and our clients dreams come true, then we would love to hear from you. Email your CV and a YouTube link of your riding with a cover letter answering the following questions to info@ebonyparkstud.com.au. We will be in touch to organise an interview which will include a test ride. The Ebony Park Friesian Magazine | March 2015

Kind Kate’s Knowledge | Horse Chestnuts Kate Langdon has always had a passion for horses. Through a roundabout route including a desire to study veterinary science, but ending up with a Bachelor of Science (Zoology) and a Bachelor of Equine Studies, as well as studying at CSU in Colorado in reproduction, AI and foaling, she has now been at Ebony Park Performance Friesians as a breeding and nutrition specialist and stud manager for 5 years.
Over the last few months I have had a couple of people ask me what exactly a chestnut on a horse is... No, it’s not a horse colour, it’s that weird thing found on the inner side of the leg above the knee on the foreleg, and often also below the hock on the inner side of the hind leg. Chestnuts are made up of very soft, hoof-like material and grow slowly. Generally the growth flakes off naturally, but not always.
The chestnut is also known as a night eye, and varies in size and shape, sometimes compared to the fingerprints of humans. For purposes of identification, some breed registries require photographs of them among some of the other individual characteristics. However, because chestnuts grow over time and horse grooms or farriers often peel or trim off the outer layers for neatness, their appearance is subject to change. So why are they there, and what exactly are they for? The evolution of the horse involved a reduction in the number of toes to one, along with other changes to the ancestral equid foot. The chestnut is thought to correspond to the wrist pad of dogs and cats, or to be a vestigial scent gland similar to those found in some deer and other animals. Scientists believe that about 50 million years ago the first known ancestor of the horse, Eohippus (which was about the size of a fox),
had four padded toes on the front legs, and three padded toes on the back legs. As the horse evolved, it got bigger, longer, and began to lose toes, until eventually they only had one per leg. This made the horse able to run faster - away from potential predators. The modern horse essentially runs on its middle finger with the hoof wall being the fingernail. This is a very simplified version of the events that changed the Eohippus into the modern horse, but there are still remnants other than the Chestnut to support this theory. For example, the splint bones are parallel to the cannon bone, but don’t run the entire length of the cannon, so have no actual structural purpose... they actually correspond to the second and fourth metacarpal and metatarsal bones in the human hand and foot (the bones in the palm of your hand and in your foot). The third metacarpal/ metatarsal is the cannon bone on which the horse runs! The domestic horse is almost alone among current equines

Kind Kate’s Knowledge | Horse Chestnuts in having chestnuts on the hind legs. Chestnuts are absent from the hind legs of asses and zebras! The majority of domestic horses have chestnuts on all four legs, as does the Przewalski's horse, but a few horse breeds are reported to lack chestnuts on the hind legs. These include: • Banker horse (most individuals) • Caspian pony (some individuals) What kind of care or grooming do they need, if any? Chestnuts grow over time, protruding from the surface of the leg. Grooming for horse showing may include peeling or trimming the outer layers to give a neater appearance to the
leg; they may peel more easily if softened first with baby oil or moisturizer.
inner side of your horses legs called chestnuts!! :)
If left alone, most of the time the chestnut eventually peels naturally. There is no real reason to trim them, but just makes the horses leg look neater. If they are too hard, you or your farrier can trim them with a knife or other sharp tool. Don’t try to remove them entirely - don’t go any deeper than skin level.
If you have any questions about horse chestnuts, or if you would like to ask a question that I can answer in a future article, make sure you email me at info@ebonyparkstud.com.a u
I hope this has satisfied your curiosity about those strange growths on the

Tash’s Training Tip | The Rut in a rut, and a rut is nothing but a grave - with both ends kicked out.” Is this you right now? Feeling like every day is the same - like that movie “Groundhog Day”? Is everything the same and you feel like you are getting nowhere and not progressing? “We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves, otherwise we harden” – Johann von Goethe Hello riding superstars!!!! Hope you are having an amazing November and creating simply HUGE results for yourself! This month I want to talk about the rut! Every day I am so grateful, because every day I get to jump out of bed EXCITED!!! Every day is different, and I wake up with an excited curiosity on what the day will bring... What will my horses be like? What fun will my team and I create today? Who will I meet or get to talk to? Who will I help? What results will I create today? I know for some people though, this isn’t their experience at all. Some people can get stuck in a rut and the challenge with a rut is... a rut is comfortable. A rut is what is familiar. But as Va n c e H a y n e r p u t s s o eloquently “Many people are
Now, I know we like certainty, and routine is important. It helps to set habits - i.e. we brush our teeth after breakfast and before bed without thinking, we get up and go to work, we come home and eat dinner with our family. That is all perfect, and it makes our lives easier to know what to expect. I certainly have a lot of routine and structure to all my days and weeks, and it’s required to make sure I keep on track and achieve what I should be achieving, to get the results I want. But within the habits and routines, there is still plenty of opportunity to play and create unexpected excitement! Remember the goal of life is to experience as much happiness and ecstasy in every given moment. So how can you create more of that in your life and perhaps get out of the rut you may feel you are in? The first thing you have to do is work out why you feel the way you do. If all you want to do is work, eat, watch TV and sleep, it’s fair to say you aren’t
feeling all that much energy for life and excitement in your day. Why is that? Do you feel stuck? Decreased choices? Do you feel like no matter what you do you can’t get the result you want? Whatever it is, it’s time to get real on what it is and what it’s really about. Then you need to determine what is more important to you? You see, there is a cost to pay to get out of the rut. Nothing is for free. And the cost to get out of the rut requires you to step out of your comfort zone. You will probably have to stretch a bit, grow a bit, be challenged a bit, embrace the unfamiliar a bit. This is where most people stop. They perceive the pain of stepping up is more than the pain of staying in the rut. I don’t have the answer for you. We are all creators of our own destiny. Still reading? Cool :) You do want to make a change Congratulations! :) Well then the next step is to embrace change. You are either green and growing or ripe and rotting. For me I want to always be learning, growing and stepping up to a new level and never ‘arrive’. I know for most other people they want to stay the same, but nature doesn’t work like that. Staying the same is going backwards. It’s impossible to stay in inertia. So knowing that change is inevitable and is required for happiness and

Tash’s Training Tip | The Rut progress - LOVE IT!!!! I love it when everything is rocking around and I don’t even know what my own name is!!!! It means something AWESOME is about to - or is happening!!!! :) Passion is also vitally important to happiness in life, and whether or not you stay in a rut. Think of the most passionate person you know are they in a rut? Or are they excited?Passion is such a moving energy! You can use it as your motivation source. Think about what you love most, think about what you are good at, think about what most fulfills you, think about a day when you felt extremely happy and satisfied. What were you doing? ... Then answer are you doing it? If not, then perhaps that is your answer! Rather than forcing yourself to move, find out what moves you and do that!!! :) The answer is following your passion.
So to recap how to get out of a rut: Step 1: Decide you want to get out of the rut, and you are willing to step out of your comfort zone to achieve that. Step 2: Embrace change and follow your passion. Then we get to Step 3: Which is - set some goals and get a plan! You must have clear SMART goals and a concise easy to follow plan of action. No one likes to want something but be confused about how to get there. If you are confused or unsure, you won’t take action, and you won’t get your goals. Whenever I set a goal, I spend a lot of time coming up with a manual of easy, simple, tiny, step by step instructions on how to achieve it. I know if I don’t... I won’t know what to do, and I probably won’t get the result I want. The best way to get the best plan... is to model someone else’s! They know what you should be doing, and what to avoid,
so find someone who has the result you want and start to follow their plan. Step 4: TAKE ACTION and stay committed and persistent You and I both know nothing happens unless you take action. To me action is easy, as long as I have clarity. That is why the plan is so important! Make sure you don’t let anything stand in you way. Life will happen, you will have setbacks - but you must stay committed to your goal and keep taking persistent action. I am often asked what do I believe the biggest determinant of success is? There are so many... but persistent action is definitely up there! I am who I am today not so much because of talent, or luck or hard work, but because I kept showing up, long after everyone else had given up and gone home -I was still there getting back up and saying ‘again!’. I wish you all the most success this month, and look forward to chatting next month! Remember if there is anything you want me to cover in these articles email info@yourridingsuccess.com - I am here to help! To Your Success,

Ebony Park Rockstar of the Month EP Arnie and Lauren Imagine my excitement when I had the chance to visit the stud at Garfield and was able to meet all the Gorgeous playful foals. Suddenly my dream could become a reality. Kate told me which horses were available and outlined their payment plan option which covered insurance too, which was a massive bonus.
I fell in love with the friesian horse over ten years ago when I watched a performance at Rod Laver Arena. I told my mum that's the horse I would love to own and ride one day. I have been to Werribee to watch Natasha ride and my eyes are still drawn to the majestic Friesian...
It was time to make a decision and a beautiful 6 month old 3/4 Friesian Gelding named 'EP Arnie' caught my attention and I knew he was the one. I wanted to leave Arnie at Ebony Park to grow, socialise and learns manners from the herd until he was a yearling. Ebony park were supportive in our decision and we were able to visit and spend time with him when we wanted. Arnie turned one in November 2014 and we brought him home in December... I was so excited! He travelled like a pro on the truck, loading and unloading with ease.

Tash's Training Tip: Whatever level you want to ride at, the good news is someone out there has already achieved it! This tells you that it can be achieved, and all you need to find out now is how. Keep asking questions. Be curious about how other people do it. The only thing separating you from someone who already is experiencing the kind of success you want to have with your riding is they had a plan and then acted. What is your plan? How will you get the results you desire? What right now is standing in your way of what you want?Get really conscious about what you ‘say’ you want and what you actually want. I truly believe everyone has the life they want - it might not be the life they desire however! If you say you want to win a State Championship and in the same breath you say you are not riding in the rain. I can tell you know you don’t really want the State Championship! You really want to be dry and comfortable! If you wanted the State Championship you would get it, simple as that. Something to think about!

Sabine trained and performed 15 years at the training center of Gunther Frohlich, who founded the FPS (Friesian Horse Society) in Germany in 1979. He also was the first importer of Friesians to Germany, and the first to promote, with Sabine's help, the Friesian as a competitive dressage horse. Natasha was lucky enough to go over to the USA and work in Sabine’s stable Proud Meadows Farm - in 2005, and learnt a lot from this amazing horse woman’s experience - especially in regards to Friesians! According to Schut-Kery, her longstanding relationship with Friesians began more by chance than by design. As a young girl in Krefeld, Germany, she was a member of the local Pony Club, which was located at the same facility where Gunther Frohlich (founder of the Friesian Horse Society and the first breeder to import Friesians to Germany) based his training center. "Everyone who got too tall for the ponies, got to ride the Friesians," said Schut-Kery. "From there, it developed into a passion." Sabine is the consummate professional. She has been instrumental in the development of equestrian exhibitions and a successful traveling horse theater in Germany, in which she performed. Her successes in competitions and exhibitions have exhilarated crowds wherever she was performing. She won the Dressage Cup for Baroque Horses at the prestigious Equitana Europe in 1993, 1995 and 1997. In 1995, she won with the unprecedented score of 10, being judged by Gyula Dallos, a Hungarian Olympic rider and trainer. Again in 1997, she won with the score of 10 being judged by Christoph Hess, from the German Equestrian Center in Warendorf, Germany. Her accomplishments do not stop with her riding abilities, as she has been awarded the German Bronze and Silver Coachmen’s badges. She has trained and competed baroque horses since 1983. In addition to her work with baroque breeds, Sabine has been quite successful with a variety of other breeds as well. Not only does Sabine possess the ability to develop competition horses from training level through Grand Prix, but she is also quite skilled in alternative movements for exhibitions, such as Spanish walk, bowing, the lay down, the sit position and rearing on command. Sabine uniquely earned the USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold medals exclusively riding Friesians. Her greatest accomplishments have been in open dressage competition. Sabine competes three to four stallions at different levels per event. She was honored to have been the one to have trained and ridden Tinus to Second Level Horse of the Year in 1999, to Third Level Horse of the Year in 2000, and to Fourth Level and Prix St. George Horse of theYear awards in 2001. Also in 2000, Sabine trained and rode Jorrit (not our Jorrit!) to First Place in Prix St. George. These were the first Friesian stallions to successfully compete at Grand Prix levels.
