The Soaring Eagles opened their 2014-15 campaign with a pair of wins at the East-West Classic. EC defeated then-No. 2 Norwich University, 3-2, in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Quarterfinal game, then followed that up with a 6-0 drubbing of Manhattanville College. This is the first time since the 2009-10 season that an Elmira team has started the season with consecutive wins.

Home Opener

Saturday’s contest marks the first home game of the 2014-15 season for the Soaring Eagles. EC has historically excelled in their first game at the Murray Athletic Center, posting a 12-1 record in 13 home openers and outscoring opponents 75-9. Elmira has opened at home against SUNY Cortland three times in its history, winning all three matchups by a combined score of 22-0.

High-Flying Attack

The Purple and Gold have implemented a new, aggressive tempo on both ends of the ice for the 2014-15 season and it paid immediate dividends at the East-West Classic as EC scored nine goals in the two games at Kreitzberg Arena. The 4.50 goals per game average currently ranks the Soaring Eagles as the fourth best scoring offense in the country.

A Bit of Déjà vu?

Ashley Ryan ’15 enters this afternoon’s contest with 99 career points, just one shy of becoming EC’s ninth 100-point scorer. The last 100-point scorer, Ryan’s former teammate Tanis Lamoureux ’14, recorded her 100th point against SUNY Cortland during Elmira’s twogame set at Cortland last February.

Phoebe Piku ’16 was a major contributor during EC’s 6-0 win over Manhattanville in the final day of the East-West Classic, pacing the Purple and Gold skaters with three points. Her three points, which came on one goal and two assists, were a career-high for the junior defender, as were the two assists she recorded against the Valiants.

Delainey on the Power Play

Cassidy Delainey ’15 had a strong start to her senior campaign scoring two goals, both on the power play, and assisting on another throughout the course of the weekend at the East-West Classic. She has already matched her previous single-season high with two power play goals and has six man-up goals in her career.

Leading the Nation

Phoebe Piku ’16 recorded three points on one goal and two assists during the East-West Classic, finishing the weekend tied for second on the Purple and Gold for total points scored. Piku’s performance also put her in elite company as she is tied atop the NCAA leaderboard for defensemen scoring per game at 1.50 points per game.

Not Missing a Beat

With Lisa Marshall ’14 no longer assuming her position between the pipes, EC’s goaltending situation includes a pair of fresh, new faces in Kierra Pietramala ’17 and Kelcey Crawford ’18. Each goaltender recorded wins at the East-West Classic, Pietramala taking down Norwich and Crawford shutting-out Manhattanville, combining for 35 saves on 37 shots.

Newcomers Making a Mark

Although much of EC’s scoring at the East-West Classic was produced by its veterans, two of Elmira’s eight newcomers, Louisa Lippiatt Durnell ’18 and Arianna Smith ’18, got into the mix. Lippiatt Durnell scored her first career goal in the second period against former No. 2 Norwich while Smith was one of six skaters to find the back of the net against Manhattanville.

All-Time vs. SUNY Cortland

EC has dominated the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland throughout the course of the programs’ 13-year series history. Elmira and Cortland have met 28 times with the Soaring Eagles winning all 28 matchups. In ad Instagram dition, the Purple and Gold have outscored the Red Dragons 184-21 in www.instagram.com/ECSoaringEagles those 28 games, equating to a winning margin of 5.82 goals per game. 2 YouTube www.youtube.com/ECSportsInfo
