Following Elmira’s thrilling 3-2 win over Nazareth College, the Soaring Eagles are riding high on a three game win streak. Elmira has outscored their opponents 14-5 during their three game tear. The last time Elmira won three games in a row dates back to last season when the Purple and Gold defeated Morrisville State in back-to-back games, followed by a win over Nazareth.
Going for number Four
The Purple and Gold will be in search for their fourth straight win when they take on Buffalo State in the opening round of the Skidmore Invitational. The last time Elmira won four or more games in a row dates back to the 2011-12 season when EC put together a fourgame win streak and a five game win-streak.
Second Period Scorers
Despite what happens in the first and third periods, you can count on one thing from the Soaring Eagles’ offense, and that is second period scoring. Of Elmira’s 32 goals this season, 14 have been scored in the second period, the most in any period by EC. The second period success has become more evident in their last three games as eight of their 14 goals were scored in the second periods.
Déjà Vu
On January 17, 2013, the Elmira men went down 2-1 after the first intermission to Nazareth. Then, EC had a five goal outburst in the second period which all but sealed their 9-5 victory. This outcome was very similar to last Friday’s matchup against Nazareth, when the Soaring Eagles carried a 1-0 deficit into the first intermission before scoring five goals in the second period to eventually win 6-3.

Dating back to the 2003-04 season, the Elmira men have fared well when playing for their fourth straight win. In those games, Elmira has gone 10-3-2, outscoring their opponents 53-33. Their most recent result when going for their fourth straight was a 6-4 loss to Utica College last season.
Alexander the Great
Alexander Taulien ’17 registered his first career goals as a Soaring Eagle in Elmira’s two wins over Nazareth. The rookie forward netted an unassisted goal, sparking a 5-0 scoring run for the Soaring Eagles which eventually led to a 6-3 win. Then the following night, Taulien gave Elmira their first lead of the game in the second period against Nazareth, which proved to be a huge goal for the Soaring Eagles, who, narrowly pulled out a 3-2 win in the closing seconds.

Back-to-Back Game Winners
Michael Collins ’16 scored what is possibly the biggest goal of his young career in Elmira’s 3-2 win over Nazareth. Collins wristed a shot that found its way to the back of the net with just 0.7 seconds remaining in the third period, sealing Elmira’s third straight win. Both Jesper Strale ’14 and Collins have scored consecutive game winners for Elmira this season. Collins’ game winners came on back-to-back nights for the Soaring Eagles while Strales’ came in Elmira’s second and third wins of the season.
On Back-to-Back Nights
Not since the 2010-11 season has an EC player scored a pair of game winners on back-to-back nights. The last player to do so is current Elmira 2013-14 ECAC WEST STANDINGS forward, Jesper Strale ’14, who punched home the game-winning goals in LEAGUE OVERALL consecutive nights against ECAC West rival Hobart College on February College Pts W-L-T Pct. Elmira’s Josh Burnell ’15 sits in a three-way tie for first place in the country in power play goals. He has punched home five power play scores this season with his fifth one coming in Elmira’s 3-2 win over Nazareth.
Tied for Fourth in the Country
Collins and Strale have scored two game-winners apiece this year, good enough to be tied for fourth place in the nation in game-winning goals.

When EC Scores First...
Elmira is a perfect 3-0 this season when they have scored first. Over the last three seasons, Elmira has gone 19-9-2 when scoring first.
All-Time vs. Buffalo State
Elmira owns a perfect 6-0-0 record against the Bengals. Their first matchup dates back to the 1995-96 season and their most current meeting dates back to the 2007-08 season, a year in which Elmira defeated Buffalo State, 3-0.
All-Time vs. Fitchburg State
Elmira and Fitchburg are even in the all-time series with a 0-0-1 series record. The only game played between the two teams happened during the 2011-12 season when the game resulted in a 1-1 OT tie.
All-Time vs. Skidmore
The Soaring Eagles own a slight edge in the all-time series against the Thoroughbreds, leading Skidmore 2-1-0. However, Skidmore has the most recent win over Elmira as they were victorious three seasons ago in this very same tournament, defeating EC 4-2.
Not in 40 years
Last season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.
A Sign of Things to Come?
Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
