The Elmira College women’s ice hockey team picked up their fifth win in a row by defeating Williams College 5-1 Saturday afternoon. Ashley Ryan ’15 and Tanis Lamoureux ’14 had three points apiece while Lisa Marshall ’14 made 31 saves between the pipes.

Sharing the Wealth

Five different women notched goals and eight others tallied points against Williams as the Soaring Eagles continue to share the puck on the ice. That was the highest number of players recording a point in a game since eight players got on the scoresheet in EC’s 5-0 win over Utica College in the ECAC West Semifinals last season.

Long Time No See

The Soaring Eagles will take on #2 Middlebury College in the opening game of the Cardinal-Panther Classic in a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship, which EC won 1-0.

Wilgosh Amongst National Leaders

Brooke Wilgosh ’15 has put together an extremely productive season for the Purple and Gold from the blue line, tying for third on the team with eight points, but it is where she ranks nationally that stands out. The third-year talent is sixth in all of NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey in points per game for defenders (1.14) and seventh in the nation in power play goals scored (3).

Ninth in the Nation

With three points in Saturday’s win over Williams, Ashley Ryan’15 bumped her points per game average up to 1.71, good enough for ninth in all of NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey.

Man Down? No Worries!

There was a stretch of nearly eight-straight minutes in the game against Williams where EC had a woman in the penalty box, but that did not stop the Soaring Eagles from pushing their lead to four over the Ephs as Ashley Ryan ’15 netted the third shorthanded goal of her career and EC’s second shorthanded goal of the season.

The Swedish Connection

Olivia Nyström ’16 and Johanna Eidensten ’17, two of Elmira’s three players from Sweden, may have more than just teammate chemistry on the ice as the two Swedes have hooked up for two goals in the past two weeks. Nyström was the beneficiary of an Eidensten pass against SUNY Potsdam and then returned the favor by setting up Eidensten’s first collegiate goal on Saturday against Williams.

Balanced Attack

Through the first seven games of 2013-14, 13 players have accumulated at least one point on the season with Ashley Ryan ’15 leading the way with 12. EC has focused on being well-rounded in recent years, as evidenced by the 20 different players who recorded points in 2012-13, and that philosophy has shown in their play yet again this season.

Coach Jackson vs. Middlebury

The Soaring Eagles lost their first two games against the Panthers in Coach Jackson’s inaugural season, but the women came up big when it mattered most as EC earned the program’s third national title with a 1-0 victory in the NCAA Division III Championship Game.

Familiar Face in Net

The Panthers will most likely start Annabelle Jones between the pipes on Saturday’s game as the junior has logged over 75 percent of the minutes this season. Jones, who is 3-0-0 this season with a .955 save percentage and a 0.99 goal against average, is the same goaltender the Soaring Eagles defeated in last season’s championship game.

All-Time vs. Amherst

EC holds a slight advantage in the all-time series, leading Amherst 6-5-0 entering this weekend. The Soaring Eagles have won the last two meetings in a matchup that dates back to the 2004 season.

Amherst this Season

Amherst enters this weekend of play with a 3-0-1 record after earning a win and a tie against fellow NESCAC opponent Wesleyan University last weekend. After scoring at least three goals in each game this season, the Lord Jeffs were shut out in a 0-0 tie on November 23rd by Wesleyan.

Amherst Scoring Leaders

Through the early stages of the 2013-14 season, the Lord Jeffs’ feature a three-headed attack offensively. Erin Martin leads the team with six points on one goal and a team-leading five assists while Tori Salmon and Courtney Baranek come in right behind Martin with five points apiece. Salmon has notched three goals to lead Amherst in that category.

Amherst Netminder

Amherst has used two goaltenders this season, but the Soaring Eagles can count on seeing Kerri Stuart in net when the two teams square off on Sunday. Stuart has played three games so far this season, compiling a 3-0-0 record with a .906 save percentage and a 1.67 goal against average. Stuart allowed six goals in last season’s 6-1 EC victory.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

New USCHO Poll

For the third consecutive week, the EC women’s ice hockey team held down the number four ranking in the USCHO National Poll. EC’s two opponents this weekend, Middlebury College and Amherst College, find themselves in the poll as well, checking in at number two and in the “others receiving votes” category respectively.
