Today’s matchup is the home opener for the defending national champions. Historically, the Soaring Eagles have been superb in home opening games as they have an 11-1 record in the 12-year history of the program and have outscored opponents by an astonishing 71-8 margin. The last time the Purple and Gold opened at the Murray Athletic Center against Utica was in the 2011-12 season where EC came away with a 2-1 victory.

White Out

Saturday is a big day for ice hockey at Elmira College with both men’s and women’s ice hockey teams hosting ECAC West opponents. Fans are encouraged to wear white to “White Out” the Murray Athletic Center. The first 500 fans with an EC student ID will receive an EC Super Fan t-shirt, courtesy of the Elmira College Finance Board. All shirts will be handed out in the main lobby of the MAC.

All-Tournament Team

Despite not coming away with a victory, the Soaring Eagles were represented on the East-West Classic All-Tournament Team as Cassidy Delainey ’15 earned one of the six spots. Delainey scored both goals against #9 Manhattanville and assisted on the first goal against #5 Norwich, giving her three points on the young year.

ECAC West Recognition

Cassidy Delainey ’15 had a strong start to the 2013-14 campaign as she recorded three points in two games at the East-West Classic and being named to the East-West Classic All-Tournament team. For her efforts over the first weekend of the year, the ECAC West honored Delainey with a spot on the ECAC West Weekly Honor Roll.

After a challenging weekend at the East-West Classic in Northfield, VT, the Elmira College women’s ice hockey team will jump into conference play with a pair of games against Utica College. The Soaring Eagles will host the Pioneers on Saturday, November 9th before closing their weekend with a game at Utica the following afternoon. EC finished second in the ECAC West Conference in 2012-13 with a 14-2-0 record, with their only losses coming at the hands of Plattsburgh State. The Soaring Eagles also finished as the runner-up in the ECAC West Championship game, falling to Plattsburgh 4-2.

When Delainey Scores

Power Play Struggles

The Soaring Eagles had a tremendous number of power play opportunities against two of the top teams in the country, but were only able to capitalize once in their 16 attempts. Cassidy Delainey ’15 was able to punch home a power play goal on EC’s seventh opportunity of the afternoon against #9 Manhattanville, but the Purple and Gold were not so fortunate against #5 Norwich, failing to get anything in their nine power play attempts.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

All-Time vs. Utica

EC holds a 26-4-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Pioneers, a matchup that dates back to the 2001-02 season.

Coach Jackson vs. Utica

Coach Jackson’s Soaring Eagles went up against Utica three times last season, two regular season and one postseason matchup. The Purple and Gold swept all three meetings between the two teams, outscoring the Pioneers 16-1.

Utica’s Season Opener

Saturday’s game is the season opener for the Utica College Pioneers. Utica is coming off a 16-9-2 season which ended with a 5-0 loss to Elmira in the ECAC Conference Semifinals in March. The Pioneers have a 10-2 record in season openers since the 2001-02 season, including winning their last three. When they open their season away from home, the Pioneers have a 4-2 mark. The Pioneers return eight of their top 10 scorers from a season ago, including ECAC West First Team recipient, Megan Myers ’14. Myers led the Pioneers in scoring with 31 points on 17 goals and 14 assists. Utica also returns the second and third leading scorers from the 2012-13 season in Nicole Schwartz ’15 and Louise Steele-Norton ’15. Schwartz recorded 17 points while Steele-Norton, a standout field hockey player for the Pioneers, chipped in 16 points after joining the ice hockey team six games into the season.

One Last Go Around

The Pioneers return their primary starting goaltender from a season ago as Jennifer Hamel ’14 is back for her final year of collegiate competition. Hamel started 17 games in 2012-13, compiling an 8-6-1 record while holding a goal against average of 1.98. She recorded 344 saves and held a .915 save percentage on the year.

New USCHO Poll

The EC women’s ice hockey team still finds its name in the top-five of the latest USCHO poll, coming in behind the team they lost to last weekend, Norwich University. This weekend’s opponent, Utica College, just missed being ranked this week as the Pioneers found themselves in the “others receiving votes” category.
