Last Friday’s 3-1 victory over No. 4 Norwich University marked the first win over a nationally ranked opponent for EC this season. Overall, the Soaring Eagles have faced five ranked opponents in 2013-14 and hold a 1-3-1 record in those games.

Revenge Achieved

Elmira’s win over Norwich last Friday avenges one of EC’s three losses this season. The Cadets defeated the Soaring Eagles, 3-2, at the season-opening East-West Classic in November.

Make it 11 Straight

EC picked up their 11th straight win over Hamilton College with their 2-1 victory on Saturday. The Soaring Eagles now hold an 11-0-0 record against the Continentals in a matchup that dates back to the 2002-03 season.

ECAC West Honors

Lisa Marshall ’14 had a tremendous weekend between the pipes, recording 47 saves while allowing just two goals in the two games. Marshall’s play in net earned her ECAC West Goaltender of the Week honors, the second time she has received this accolade this season.

Wilgosh is No. 3

Brooke Wilgosh ’15 continues her stellar play from the blue line as she is EC’s fourth leading scorer. The junior recorded two points against Hamilton College last Saturday, including scoring the game-winning goal, giving her 16 points on five goals and 11 assists. Wilgosh is averaging 1.14 points per game, placing her third in the country in defensemen scoring.

Lamoureux Inching Closer

After a two point weekend, Tanis Lamoureux ’14 now has 19 points on the season and 87 points in her career. Another 13 points will make Lamoureux the eighth player in EC history to reach the 100-point plateau and the first player since former standout Jenna McCall ’10.

With the current scoring pace that Ashley Ryan ’15 is on, there is an outside possibility that Ryan will join Lamoureux in the 100-point club this season. Ryan also produced a two-point weekend last week, giving the junior 24 points on the season and 78 in her career. On the season, Ryan is averaging 1.71 points per game and with 11 regular season games remaining and the ECAC West postseason likely for EC, she is on pace to hit 100 career points this season. Lamoureux continues to accumulate points for the Soaring Eagles, tallying at least one point in her last eight games. The eight-game stretch is the longest point streak of her career, eclipsing the seven-game streak she put together in her inaugural season (2010-11).

Go-Go Jo-Jo

It took a handful of games to get going, but Johanna Eidensten ’17 has really come on strong over the last five games, recording six of her eight points on the season. The newcomer scored a momentum-shifting goal against Norwich last weekend as her score with 0.7 left on the clock gave the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

Marshall Steps Up

Lisa Marshall ’14 allowed just two goals in 120 minutes between the pipes last weekend, dropping her goals against average to 1.39. With the standout performances, Marshall moved up three spots, from ninth to sixth, in the national rankings for goals against average.

Top-10 on Offense and Defense

The Soaring Eagles continue to boast one of the best offenses in the nation, ranking sixth behind 3.93 goals per game, but they also hold one of the best scoring defenses in the country as they rank seventh, allowing 1.64 goals per game. EC is one of four institutions in the nation to rank in the top 10 in both categories.

Stevenson This Season

Stevenson University enters Saturday’s matchup with a 5-10-1 overall record in just their second year as a Division III program. The Mustangs started the 2013-14 campaign with a 3-1-1 record, but after a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart University, Stevenson lost their next nine contests. Their nine-game losing streak came to an end last weekend after the Mustangs picked up a pair of wins over New England College.

Mustangs to Watch

McKenzie Taggart leads the young Mustangs in scoring this season with 17 points on 11 goals and six assists. Her 0.73 goals per game average places her in a three-way tie for 14th in the country in goals per game while her six power play goals places her in a four-way tie for second in the nation. Behind Taggart is fellow sophomore, Molly O’Neil who has 16 points on seven goals and a team-leading nine assists. Morgan Alexander and Brooke Webber round out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 10 respectively.

Opportunities Lie Ahead

Stevenson leads the country in penalty minutes, averaging 19.8 penalty minutes per game, which could lead to a number of power play opportunities for the Soaring Eagles. EC ranks 17th in the nation in power play efficiency, scoring on 19.7 percent of their man-up opportunities, but they have been better of late, successfully scoring on 27.3 percent of their power play opportunities over their last five games.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

New USCHO Poll

The Soaring Eagles maintained their number three ranking in the most recent USCHO poll after picking two wins last weekend. EC will have the opportunity to play against No. 1 Plattsburgh State in a couple weeks.
