Home Opener

Today’s matchup against Keystone College marks the first game at Speidel Gymnasium for the Purple and Gold. The Soaring Eagles have struggled in home openers dating back to the 2001-02 season, only winning two out of 12 home opening games in that span.

Double-Digit Scoring Streak

Two-time Empire 8 Scoring leader, Jessica Zoltowski ’14, has an impressive streak of double-digit scoring games going right now after recording 10 points against Cortland State on Tuesday. Dating back to last season, the fourth-year standout has eclipsed the double-digit barrier in 10 straight games.

Leading the Way

Not only has Zoltowski recorded double-digit points in each of her last 10 games, the fourth-year standout has led the team in scoring in each of Elmira’s last nine games, dating back to last season. During that span, the forward has averaged a remarkable 18.9 points per game. Also starting a team-leading streak of her own is Liz Forrest ’14 who has led the Soaring Eagles in rebounds in each game to start the 2013-14 season. Through EC’s first three games, Forrest is averaging a team-high 7.7 rebounds.

Ranking High in the Empire 8

The Soaring Eagles have one of the best defenses from behind the arc as EC is ranked second in three-point defense. The Purple and Gold have allowed just seven of the 37 three-point attempts to fall (18.9%). On the individual side of the rankings, Alex Balara ’15 currently ranks third in free-throw percentage as she has made 10 of her 11 free throw attempts thus far, good enough for a 90.9 free throw percentage.

This is the third year in a row and the fifth time in the last 10 years that EC and Keystone have played each other. The overall series record is as even as you can get as each team has won two games entering today, with the Giants pulling out the 65-60 home victory last season.

Keystone this Season

Keystone College comes into today’s non-conference matchup with a 2-0 record after picking up wins over Cazenovia College and Division II Mercy College. The Giants trailed Mercy by as many as 14 points during Tuesday night’s game, but a 22-13 run from Keystone put the Giants out in front for the first time all night. Alyssa Cuomo’15 stepped to the line in a tied game with less than five seconds to play and hit one of her two free throws to give Keystone the 71-70 victory.

Triple-Digit Outburst

The Giants exploded for 104 points in their season opener against Cazenovia. Keystone shot a blistering 53.6 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from distance. The 104 points is the most points the Keystone women have recorded in a game since joining NCAA Division III competition and the most since dropping 98 points on Yeshiva University last season.

Keystone’s Scoring Options

The Giants have four players averaging double-digit points through the first two games of the season, led by newcomer, AAliya Hayes ’17. Hayes Twitter is averaging 24 minutes per game off the bench, but leads the team with www.twitter.com/ECSoaringEagles 22.5 points per game. Coming in behind Hayes is Tuesday’s hero, Alyssa YouTube Cuomo ’15, who is averaging 17.5 points per game while Jazmyn Robin www.youtube.com/ECSportsInfo son ’15 and Ashley Evans ’15 round out the double-digit scorers, averaging 11.5 and 10.5 points respectively. 2
