From Your Life Group pastor Pass the Baton I love people! My wife and I have five kids, seven (soon to be eight) grandkids, and a huge extended family. Some of the closest relationships I’ve made are with people I’ve met in Life Groups. Through the years, they’ve been known as small groups, cell groups, and home groups, and I’ve been blessed to be part of them for a long time. I’ve made friends who will pray with and for me, and I’ve been able to spend personal time getting to know people outside of a church setting. I’ve made both lifelong friends and friends who were sent for a specific season in my life. They are priceless relationships I might have missed had I not been part of a Life Group. When Pastor Dan asked me to help launch a new Life Group program a couple of years ago, I was excited, because I knew God had great plans in store for everyone. I’ve been thrilled to see some of you step out of your comfort zone to lead a group when you didn’t think you could, while others of you have opened your homes to host groups for leaders who didn’t have a place to meet. There are the stories of breakthrough when God used one of you to meet the needs of the other; of incredible prayer times as a group when you finally opened up to someone else; of laughed-till-you-cried game nights where you felt like you really belonged. This is what it means to do life together, and I’ve been blessed to share this with you. If you’ve been at East Coast for any length of time, you know that an integral part of our leadership structure is to duplicate ourselves. We are constantly training up those around us and developing the God-given gifts and talents in our team members. After much prayer and consideration, the time has now come to hand the reins over to another leader on our staff. I am pleased and honored to introduce Jonathan Walling as our new Life Group Director. I will be Jon’s supervisor in his new capacity and will work closely with him. This young man has served at East Coast for a long time and has been faithful in every task assigned, whether it was behind the scenes or on the stage. Most of you know him as the worship pastor at the Avenue Worship Center and Mezzanine Young Adult Church, but he is stepping into other areas of responsibility and doing a fantastic job. He has been working on Life Groups with us for several months, and is excited to be working now with all of you. Thank you for the privilege of allowing me to serve as your Life Group Director. I know that Jon will take us to the next level as we continue, together, building a life-giving church that lasts.

MAN UP!
man up | Featured Groups
What makes the measure of a man? Some say genetic make up. Society claims the measure of a man is found in his wealth, job status, or personal connections. As a Christ-follower, a man should know his true identity. God does not see the money, but how faithful a man is with his wealth. He sees the heart of a man and what makes it beat. What He values is integrity, love, and family. The measure of a man is found not in the world’s view, but instead within his morals, values, and his relationship with God. my life
Recently, Life Group Director Jonathan Walling sat down to chat with the Morris family and get their take on life at East Coast. Tim, Laurie, Lauren, and Bradley have been part of ECCC since early 2009, and quickly discovered that Life Groups helped them feel at home in their new church. Amidst packets of soy sauce and plates of fried rice, this family of four shared how they’ve grown, individually and together, through the relationships they’ve built over just one year of Life Groups.
Which Life Groups do you currently attend? Tim - Laurie and I attend Pastor Ray Goolsby’s Getting Started group and it is awesome! Lauren - I co-lead a co-ed Bible study called G3, along with Russ Wood and Drew Cordes. On Saturday mornings, Amanda Johnson and I co-lead Mosaic, a Bible study for young women. Bradley – I attend Cassie Filardo’s TNT life group, Take Root.
What is the purpose of each of your groups? Tim – Pastor Ray intended for his group to be for fairly new believers, but it’s become more of an open forum. He hits on things like gifts of the Spirit and increasing your faith, which give you a good foundation. Lauren – At G3, we learn about God by taking a chapter of the Bible and studying it during the week. It’s brought me out of my box to where I’m more comfortable talking in front of people. Mosaic is for girls to get together and share life. We talk about issues we are dealing with and find answers in God’s Word. Bradley – The purpose of Take Root is pretty much to just hang out and to talk about what’s on your heart. Usually, Cassie will start off sharing and that will get others talking about their week.
How has being part of a Life Group affected the way co-workers and people you come in contact with on a daily basis?

Tim – Well, I have a lot of Christian co-workers right now but, interestingly enough, each one of them comes from a different denomination. It seems like the questions that arise in our Life Group will be the same ones that will come up at work. I try to be sensitive to differences between me and my co-workers, but it’s neat when somebody is going through hard times and not finding answers from their church and I’m able to say, “Hey, I learned about that this week, and maybe it will help you.” That’s happened quite a bit. Laurie – I have applied a lot of Pastor Ray’s teaching to my family life. I’ve learned a lot more scripture and, over the past year, I’ve tried to read my Bible all the way through. It’s encouraged me to dig deeper into the scriptures, to know why I believe what I believe about the Holy Spirit, and being baptized in the Holy Spirit. It’s really lit a fire in my life. Lauren – When I see people in trouble and they need advice, I’m able to share a scripture that we studied in our group or give an encouraging word that I learned there.

How life groups changed my life | The Morris Family Bradley – Going to a Life Group has challenged me in learning how to connect with people, how to be led by the Spirit when talking to or counseling people, and how to be an encourager.
Since you’ve been attending Life Groups, have you made any new friendships? Tim – Life Groups give you opportunities to make friendships because you start to hear people’s needs. You’re aware, and all of a sudden something will come across your path where you can help them. Usually, just walking into the auditorium, you don’t hear someone’s individual prayer request or know what he or she needs. Lauren – Brad and I used to just go to Mezzanine and TNT and we were just the new people. Since we started going to Life Groups, we’ve gotten to know people on a different level. We’ve started developing strong relationships, not just seeing people in passing. Bradley – I’ve made some of the best friendships ever at Life Groups. As a matter of fact, I met my girlfriend at Life Group! I’ve also gotten to actually hang out with worship band members and people I go to church with, and have a deeper relationship with them outside of church rather than just in the services.
Has the way you view God, or your beliefs in who God is, changed since joining a Life Group? Tim – Oh, definitely. Pastor Ray has taught us so much about the Holy Spirit and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I actually received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in our Life Group. That was important to me, because I doubted my salvation at times and could not understand why things were going awry. Laurie – I have seen the power of God’s love through scripture taught at Pastor Ray’s Life Group. I have seen that He loves us unbelievably, so much that it makes me want to cry. It’s because we get so deep into the Word that God’s love just comes out. If there are any questions, Pastor Ray is so knowledgeable that he can clear up any misinterpretation. Lauren – My knowledge of God has grown since being part of Life Groups. Now that I’m co-leading two groups, I’ve learned a lot by setting aside time to read my Bible and study. As a person who was just going to a group and now is leading, Life Groups have changed my thoughts about witnessing to others. I just want to dive into the Word more and share with others. Bradley – I probably have been challenged the most in my faith, my knowledge of Christ, and my passion for seeing others have a passion for Him.
What are some specific ways your life has changed since joining a Life Group? Tim – Coming from a background other than what we believe at East Coast, I had never heard a lot of the things I’ve learned in Life Groups. Pastor Ray had said to listen to the Holy Spirit and I took it literally; I just listened. I had a lung problem from breathing some fumes at work, and they wanted to operate. Pastor Ray and Pastor Dan had been heavy on believing and having the faith not to just run to a doctor to have surgery. One night after Life Group, Pastor Ray was really burdened about my lung issue and was talking to me about it. Pastor Matt joined our conversation and said, point blank, “I got a word from God, and you are not to get operated on.” Laurie and I had already been to a second doctor and thought that removing a lung lobe was the way to go. Pastor Matt shared a personal testimony about his family believing God for something and doing it a different way than was recommended, and they received their healing. I took that literally, so that night I went home and prayed and God said, “No, don’t do that.” The next morning, I called my health care provider and said, “You know, as crazy as this is, I want a third opinion.” So they sent me to a doctor in Titusville, way out of our heath coverage area, who looked at me and said, “This is so simple; I
would never operate for something like this.” He gave me medication that he said should clear it up and, in three or four days, it was cleared up. If I had not gotten a word from Pastor Matt, which came up in Life Group, I would have gone into surgery – a surgery that wouldn’t have necessarily meant I was healed, just that I would have had a big incision. Laurie – I came from a background of death and destruction. When I started coming to a Life Group, what was brought out to me through scripture was that I am righteous and whole; I am loved and perfect in God’s eyes. I never viewed myself as that. I always viewed myself as scarred, sinful, filled with iniquity, and I don’t feel that way anymore. I am looking at life through God’s eyes now, instead of through the eyes of condemnation. I am fully righteous and acceptable and will always be. Lauren – A year ago, I did not know the people I know now. I have made a lot of lasting friendships, and I am excited to do the rest of my life knowing that I have met some of my lifelong friends through Life Groups. Bradley – Life Groups have propelled me to be more passionate about Christ. In my Life Group, there are a lot of us who are overflowing with joy and passion for God, and who are excited about ministry and knowing God. Seeing others live that way challenges me to want that desire for Christ.
Would you encourage other people to join a Life Group, and why? Tim – As the leader of this family, I would say that our advancement to having a healed, productive, and more Godly environment in our home is a 99 on a scale from 1 – 100. There has been massive improvement in our family this year. Laurie – Definitely go to a Life Group! You build friendships, you get to interact with leaders and ask questions in a way that you don’t get to in a church service. You get a lot more insight from other people. You get more relationships within the church as you get close to people. You’re able to minister to them if they have needs, and you can be ministered to, as well.
Lauren – I would encourage people to go – not just people who go to East Coast but also people who go to other churches or maybe don’t go to church at all. Come to Life Groups, because that’s where you connect. I believe we should be reaching out to our community and making sure that people off the street know they are welcome. It’s not just for church people. It can impact your life and change you and it’s fun! Bradley – You learn a lot in a different environment and a different style than you may be used to. You have Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday where you can go to church; you can come and commune with the Lord. Then you get an extra day out of your week to learn, fellowship, and worship. I would definitely encourage people to go to Life Groups.
I always viewed myself as scarred, sinful, filled with iniquity, and I don’t feel that way anymore.
- Laurie Morris

Make the Connection Hundreds of men were interviewing for only two positions at the Colorado Division of Highways back in the ‘70’s. I got one. How? I had connections. My wife’s uncle, some of her cousins, and several family friends worked for that agency, and their influence made the difference between being just another name on the list and being the one chosen for the job. I decided to research the idea of connections. I found that Dictionary.com lists nearly twenty different meanings! When you read through the list, it is amazing how multifaceted this concept is, how many different meanings there are for just one word. Here are just a few: con.nec.tion: . the act or state of connecting . anything that connects; connecting part; link; bond: electrical connection . association; relationship . a circle of friends or associates . association with or development of something observed, imagined, discussed . a specific vehicle, airplane, ship, etc. boarded in making connections . a relative, esp. by marriage or distant blood relationship . slang. a person who sells drugs to addicts . a source of supply for goods, material, etc., that is scarce, difficult, or illegal to obtain . a group of persons connected by political or religious ties . associates, relations, acquaintances, or friends, esp. having some influence or power . a channel of communication: a bad telephone connection.
Connections can be casual, and connections can be lifesaving. I remember when I was in the hospital fighting for the life of my wife and unborn infant – a very intense situation. Right there beside me, praying, believing, and celebrating when deliverance came, was my friend Chuck Lortie. Chuck was someone with whom I had really connected at church. I remember miraculously getting on a connecting flight in India to get a very ill team member home. What a connection that was! How many times have we tried to get a car or mower started, and someone showed up with jumper cables and made the connection that enabled us to get started and keep going? Connections are a vital part of life and they are a vital part of the church. Jesus had the big connections, teaching thousands on hillsides and thousands in the temple. Crowds followed Him wherever He went. It seems, though, that His more intimate connections held the greatest value. Think of just the twelve disciples in boats

on a stormy lake; Peter, James and John alone with Him on the Mount of Transfiguration; Mary discovering Him by the garden tomb after He had risen. When I think back to the job with the Colorado Division of Highways, I see connections that set the course of my life. I not only got the job, but also met the man who led me in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I met the family who started City on the Hill Ministries where I was ordained and am still ordained today. City on the Hill is where I started in ministry - first as a children’s pastor, then a youth pastor, followed by associate pastor and then senior pastor! These were incredible connections that God had arranged, going far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. That Division of Highways job ended up providing me with a ministry education: I was mainly a driver and could listen to teaching tapes and pray for most the day, and I did. What kind of connections is God trying to start in your life? Where is He trying to take you? What power is He trying to release? What communication is He trying to make with you? What bad connections is He trying to remove? A Life Group is the place to make God-based connections that could lead to more than you could ever ask or think. C’mon – get connected!

What is a Life Group? Life Groups are the very life source of
East Coast Christian Center. People get together to enjoy a hobby or sport, have a Bible study, or make new friends. Life Groups give both individuals and families an opportunity to meet others that call ECCC their church and build long-lasting relationships.
How do I get connected to a Life Group? We offer a wide
range of groups that get together to play cards and board games, scrapbook, meet with other married couples, study the Bible, or even talk about Pastor Dan’s weekend message. There really is something for everyone. All you have to do is look over this issue of the Life Group magazine, pick out a group or two that peak your interest, fill out your sign-up card, and turn it in either in the offering, the curved counter in either the Parkway or Avenue Worship Centers, or you can bring it by the church office. You can expect someone to contact you within 24-48 hours. It’s that easy.
What’s new in Life Groups this year? This launch is unlike any launch we have had thus far because we are launching over 50 different Life Groups. We have something for everyone!
How many of us made New Year’s Resolutions for 2010? Have you made a resolution to strengthen your marriage? Then we have a group for you: “21st Century Marriage.” Have you made a resolution to get in shape? Then one of our three new activity groups – “C25K,” “Bike ‘n Roll,” and “F.I.T” – may be just what you’re looking for. Want to grow in the Word this year? Sign up for a Teaching & Discussion Group like “Freedom Dwellers,” “Getting Started,” or “Wild at Heart.” This year, we also have three Life Groups that will be discussing Pastor Dan’s weekend messages: “Deeper Still,” “Weekend Message Replay,” and “Beachside Rewind.” There’s also scrapbooking, cooking, surfing, and so many more. Some groups fill up fast, so don’t wait! Sign up today! Visit www.eastcoastlifegroup.com for more info.
